  • 2025 WM Phoenix Open picks, odds, field: Surprising predictions by golf model that’s nailed 13 majors

Scottie Scheffler has had tremendous success at the WM Phoenix Open in recent years. The No. 1 ranked player in the world recorded his first career PGA Tour victory at this event in 2022 and also finished on top of the leaderboard in 2023. Scheffler, who’s coming off a T-9 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, will headline the 2025 WM Phoenix Open field, which also features major champions like Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama. The 2025 WM Phoenix Open first-round tee times at TPC Scottsdale begin on Thursday at 9:20 a.m. ET.

According to the latest 2025 WM Phoenix Open odds, Scheffler is the 3-1 favorite (risk $100 to win $300) to finish on top of the leaderboard. He’s followed by Thomas (11-1), Matsuyama (16-1) and Sungjae Im (20-1) on the PGA odds board. Defending champion Nick Taylor tied the course record (60) in the first round last season and is +6000 (risk $100 to win $6,000) to be the leader after Round 1. Rickie Fowler won this event in 2019 and is +450 (risk $100 to win $450) to finish inside the top 10. Before locking in your 2025 WM Phoenix Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters — its third Masters in a row — and last year’s PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed its sports betting picks could have seen massive returns on betting apps like FanDuelDraftKings and Fanatics

Now that the 2025 WM Phoenix Open field is locked in, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

    2025 WM Phoenix Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2025 WM Phoenix Open: Matsuyama, a two-time winner of this event and one of the top favorites, fails to finish on top of the leaderboard and barely cracks the top five. Matsuyama won this event in 2016 and 2017 and has already recorded a victory on the PGA Tour this season at The Sentry in January.

However, Matsuyama has finished T-32 or worse in his last two starts on tour and hasn’t cracked the top 20 at TPC Scottsdale since 2022. He also enters this week’s event ranked 102nd in greens in regulation percentage (68.75%) and 133rd in driving accuracy (56.14%), which doesn’t bode well at a course like TPC Scottsdale. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the 2025 WM Phoenix Open field. See who else to fade here.

Another surprise: Sepp Straka, a 45-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

Straka secured a victory at The American Express earlier this year and is coming off a T-7 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 31-year-old is one of the best ball-strikers on tour, ranking fifth in greens in regulation percentage (78.13%) and 12th in strokes gained: approach to green (1.075). He also ranks third in birdie average (6.00), fourth in scoring average (67.31) and fifth in driving accuracy (75.88%). Those impressive stats, plus his long odds, make him a strong value pick for your 2025 WM Phoenix Open bets. See who else to pick here

How to make 2025 WM Phoenix Open picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 45-1 or longer who will make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s picks here.

Who will win the 2025 WM Phoenix Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the 2025 WM Phoenix Open odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected leaderboard, all from the model that’s nailed 13 golf majors, including the last three Masters and three majors in 2024.

The 2025 WM Phoenix Open is just around the corner and golf fans are buzzing with excitement. With a stacked field of talented players set to compete, the competition is sure to be fierce. But who will come out on top?

According to a golf model that has accurately predicted the winners of 13 majors, there are some surprising picks for this year’s tournament. The model takes into account a variety of factors, including player performance, course conditions, and recent form.

One of the top picks according to the model is young phenom, Jordan Spieth. Despite a recent slump in form, the model predicts that Spieth will bounce back and claim victory at the WM Phoenix Open. Another surprising pick is veteran golfer Phil Mickelson, who the model believes has a strong chance of adding another title to his impressive resume.

Other notable picks include Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka, who are all expected to be strong contenders at the tournament.

Of course, golf is a notoriously unpredictable sport, so anything can happen once the players tee off. But if this model’s track record is anything to go by, these picks could be worth keeping an eye on. Who do you think will come out on top at the 2025 WM Phoenix Open? • Blake Lively’s A Simple Favor 2 to Open SXSW Festival amid Justin Baldoni Legal Battle

The release of Blake Lively‘s next movie is fast approaching in the middle of her legal battle with It Ends With Us costar Justin Baldoni.

Lively, 37, reprises her role alongside Anna Kendrick in the sequel to 2018’s A Simple Favor, titled Another Simple Favor, and it was announced Tuesday, Feb. 4, that its world premiere will be at the 2025 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, serving as the opening night debut on March 7.

Another Simple Favor will later be available to stream on Prime Video starting May 1. The cast also includes Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Elizabeth Perkins, Michele Morrone, Alex Newell, Henry Golding and Allison Janney.

Director Paul Feig said in a statement, “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be back at my favorite festival in the world where we successfully launched Bridesmaids and Spy, and I cannot begin to say how honored I am to have our film opening it all.”

“I’ve avoided making sequels to any of my films but these characters were just too much fun not to revisit,” added Feig. “So to be able to have Anna, Blake, Henry, Andrew, Michele, Elizabeth, Alex and myself watch our film with the great SXSW audience is a bucket-list event I’ll be able to check off March 7 and move playing drums for Dwight Yoakum’s band up to the top slot.”

It Ends With Us became the highest-grossing movie of Lively’s career, but it also became the center of a heated legal battle with Baldoni, 41, the director and costar.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

In December, she sued Baldoni and others, alleging sexual harassment and a retaliatory smear campaign to tarnish her reputation, which he has denied. Baldoni responded with a $400 million lawsuit of his own, accusing Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, among others, of defamation and extortion. Her lawyers called that lawsuit “desperate” and “meritless.”

Another Simple Favor director Feig, 62, has spoken out in support of Lively after she took legal action.

“I’ve now made two movies with Blake and all I can say is she’s one of the most professional, creative, collaborative, talented and kind people I’ve ever worked with,” the director wrote on X Dec. 22. “She truly did not deserve any of this smear campaign against her. I think it’s awful she was put through this.”

In January, Feig denied rumors that the A Simple Favor sequel’s release was being delayed because of Lively’s legal battle with Baldoni. “This is total BS. Sorry. The movie is finished and coming out soon. Don’t believe anything you read on social media these days,” he wrote on X Jan. 10.

In October 2024, Kendrick, 39, who made her directorial debut with Woman of the Hour, told PEOPLE it was “lovely” reuniting with Lively for the sequel.

“She lives on the East Coast, I live on the West Coast, so we don’t get to see each other often. But it was lovely, and I think that those characters have such weird chemistry that it’s so fun to just get the gang back together,” said Kendrick. “And it does feel a little bit like riding a bike.”

Blake Lively’s highly anticipated sequel to A Simple Favor is set to open the prestigious SXSW Festival, but not without some controversy. The film’s director, Justin Baldoni, is currently embroiled in a legal battle that could potentially overshadow the film’s premiere.

Despite the legal drama surrounding Baldoni, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of A Simple Favor 2, which promises to be just as thrilling and entertaining as its predecessor. Lively’s return to the big screen is sure to be met with excitement and anticipation, and her performance in the film is already generating buzz.

As the opening film at SXSW, A Simple Favor 2 is poised to be a major success, setting the tone for the rest of the festival. With Lively at the helm, this sequel is sure to be a must-see for fans of the original film and newcomers alike.

Stay tuned for more updates on A Simple Favor 2 and its premiere at SXSW Festival.

  • Daniil Medvedev pinpoints one area of his game he’s been working to improve in training since shock Australian Open defeat

Daniil Medvedev will be eager to put all of his focus on the Rotterdam Open, but part of him may still be thinking about his disastrous Australian Open.

Medvedev is among the biggest Australian Open losers, having fallen in the second round to American youngster Learner Tien.

And in his first round meeting with Kasidit Samrej, Medvedev was booed by the Australian Open crowd, summarising his disappointing experience in Melbourne.

Medvedev was the fifth seed at the Australian Open, where he is a three-time finalist, having lost last year’s final to Jannik Sinner.

He now moves on from that early exit by taking on Stan Wawrinka at the Rotterdam Open, where Sinner is taking a rest from his recent Grand Slam success.

Daniil Medvedev wants to improve confidence after shock Australian Open loss

Medvedev is the second seed in Rotterdam, with the Russian sharing what he has been working on ahead of the event with the ATP Tour website.

“It was a tough result in Australia,” he said. “In a way, it was a good match, but a tough result. I am just trying to look forward and bounce back, that is the only way. I have to try to gain some confidence to win some matches.

“I am trying to get my game more competitive. It is not easy but I am working on a lot of things but I think my confidence is the most important.

“Confidence and the work you put in show in the most important moments of matches, and you try and put the reps in to have that belief in your body.

“I am working on lots of areas. Let’s take volleys. I am not the best at the net on tour but I am capable sometimes of making some amazing volleys in important moments.

“One against Learner in Australia. You work every day on aspects of your game and sometimes they work in matches and sometimes not.

“I feel I am in a good position. I had a very good pre-season and a great week before the Australian Open. I remain calm.

“I am confident I can find my level and play my best in Rotterdam. When you have an amazing week and results and then you lose the next tournament early, you feel your good result is forgotten. That is tennis.

“It works both ways, when you have a bad result people focus on that until you play well again. I hope I can play well here this week at an event I have had success at.”

Daniil Medvedev excited for new generation after Australian Open loss to Learner Tien

Tien was among the rising stars to really shine at the Australian Open, with his fellow NextGen player Joao Fonseca also picking up a top 10 win against Andrey Rublev.

A total of five of the eight players from the 20-and-under tournament in Jeddah in December reached at least the second round in Melbourne, with Tien joined by fellow American Alex Michelsen in making it to round four.

Sharing his thoughts on that new group of ATP players, Medvedev noted: “I think it is normal to have a new generation coming. I think every generation probably had this. Young guys coming and beating top 10 players at majors.

“Learner played a great match and was able to win the next one even when we finished at three in the morning. So that showed he was ready for it and a good sign.

    Result Year Tournament Opponent Score
    Loss 2019 US Open  Rafael Nadal 5–7, 3–6, 7–5, 6–4, 4–6
    Loss 2021 Australian Open  Novak Djokovic 5–7, 2–6, 2–6
    Win 2021 US Open Novak Djokovic 6–4, 6–4, 6–4
    Loss 2022 Australian Open Rafael Nadal 6–2, 7–6(7–5), 4–6, 4–6, 5–7
    Loss 2023 US Open Novak Djokovic 3–6, 6–7(5–7), 3–6
    Loss 2024 Australian Open  Jannik Sinner 6–3, 6–3, 4–6, 4–6, 3–6
    Daniil Medvedev Grand Slam finals

“But with this new generation, there are a lot of good young guys. Some generations have more players coming through like this than others, but there are always great players coming.

“Let’s see what they are able to do over the coming period, that is tough. But for sure they have a very strong generation.”

After his surprising early exit at the Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev has been hard at work in training to improve one specific area of his game. The Russian tennis star recently revealed that he has been focusing on his mental toughness and staying calm under pressure.

In a recent interview, Medvedev admitted that he struggled to maintain his composure during his match at the Australian Open, which ultimately led to his defeat. He acknowledged that he needs to work on controlling his emotions and staying focused, especially in crucial moments.

“I know that I have the skills and the talent to compete at the highest level, but I need to work on my mental game to ensure that I can perform at my best when it matters most,” Medvedev said.

  • Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs Philadelphia Flyers (1:00 p.m. MST)

The Avs come into this contest coming off of a dominating performance against the Blues, scoring four goals in the first period, including the first goal in an Avs sweater for Martin Necas in his home debut. The speed Necas plays with has meshed seamlessly in the Avs system so far, and a rapport with Nathan MacKinnon is quickly forming.

As for today, the recipe for success should look the same as it did on Friday night. The Avs weren’t afraid to shoot the puck, and were rewarded early and often on the scoresheet. The Blues simply could not keep up. With this being the final time the Avs will play on front of the Avs faithful until February 26th, the Avs should be ready to come out flying and put on another show for the fans.

Cale Makar and Scott Wedgewood were absent from practice on Saturday. Makar, who blocked a shot with his foot against the Dallas Stars on January 18th, has seemingly been managing that issue ever since, so this should be nothing more than maintenance for the Avs star defenseman.

Conversely, Wedgewood’s situation is a mystery. He has not appeared in game action in 8 days, last playing in Boston against the Bruins to open the Avs recent road trip. Additionally, Trent Miner was recalled from the Colorado Eagles yesterday, so the signs point towards Wedgewood being a scratch today.

As is the case with matinee affairs, the Avs won’t have a morning skate prior to the start of the game, so lineups will be confirmed in warmups.

    Projected Lineup

    Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Martin Necas (88)

    Jonathan Drouin (27) — Casey Mittelstadt (37) — Juuso Parssinen (16)

    Miles Wood (28) — Jack Drury (18) — Ross Colton (20)

    Joel Kiviranta (94) — Parker Kelly (17) — Logan O’Connor (25)

    Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)

    Samuel Girard (49) — Josh Manson (42)

    Keaton Middleton (67) — Sam Malinski (70)

    Mackenzie Blackwood (39)

  • Door just swung wide open for Mavericks to make trade Luka Doncic would love

The NBA trade deadline is less than a week away, and while there have only been a handful of trades made around the league so far this season, things are poised to pick up very quickly over the next seven days.

While the Dallas Mavericks have been known as one of the most active teams ahead of the trade deadline when it comes to calling around, rumors surrounding who they have shown interest in have been relatively thin outside of their “strong” interest in Herbert Jones of the New Orleans Pelicans. Nico Harrison keeps his cards close to his chest when it comes to what he is planning to do ahead of each year’s trade deadline, but it’s a given that he is always trying to improve the roster.

Harrison has made a move at the trade deadline every year that he has worked for the Mavericks, and this year could bring more of the same depending on what approach he decides to take. It’s clear that he isn’t going to make a trade to try to fix Dallas’ current injury issue, as Dallas has proven they are a top team in the NBA when they’re fully healthy, but there is one trade that could be on the table soon that would thrill Luka Doncic who has been out since Christmas Day with a calf strain.

Dallas could explore pairing Bogdanovic with Doncic

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Atlanta Hawks have been “actively exploring the trade market” (subscription required) when it comes to moving Bogdan Bogdanovic. Stein added that Bogdanovic still has “fans around the league” despite having a down year shooting the ball, and there have been “credible whispers this week that he could be on the move.”

Playing with Bogdanovic would likely be a dream come true for Doncic considering the close friendship they share, and Dallas could potentially convince Atlanta to deal him for a cheap price at some point over the next week. Bogdanovic is having a down year with the Hawks as he is posting career lows nearly across the entire board, but his skill as a shooter is undeniable, regardless of what the numbers this season say (30.1 percent from downtown on 6.1 attempts per game).

While Dallas’ priority seems to be adding frontcourt depth and or a lockdown perimeter defender, adding another shooter is not a bad idea. The Mavericks are ranked 12th in the NBA in 3-pointers made with 632 and ninth in the NBA in 3-point percentage, which are both respectable numbers, and adding Bogdanovic into the mix could help boost both of these numbers to the moon.

With the shot-creation abilities of Doncic, Bogdanovic would be getting some of the best looks of his career, and he’d be provided with a fresh start playing for the Mavericks. Playing next to Doncic has helped resurrect several different players’ careers when it comes to the shots that he creates for them, and the same could be said about Bogdanovic if the Mavericks make a move for him.

Bogdanovic is averaging 10.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.8 steals per game this season while shooting 37.1 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from three, and all of these numbers are way down from what he posted last season when he was in conversations of being one of the best bench players in the NBA. His 3-point shooting off the catch makes him someone that defenses always have to account for, and he would make Dallas’ bench even more deadly if he could improve his efficiency.

Dallas’ main priority should remain to add a perimeter defender, but if Atlanta ends up pushing hard to trade Boogdanovic, the opportunity may be too good for Dallas to pass up.

After this season, Bogdanovic is set to make $16 million next season before having a team option for $16 million for the 2026-27 season, and he could be a good investment if Dallas thinks they can get him playing like a Sixth Man of the Year candidate again.

The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Dallas Mavericks have just been given a golden opportunity to make a move that could greatly benefit their team. With the news that star player Luka Doncic is eager for a change and open to a trade, the door has swung wide open for the Mavericks to make a deal that could reshape their roster and elevate their chances of success.

Doncic, one of the most talented and promising young players in the league, has expressed frustration with the current state of the Mavericks and his desire to play for a team that can contend for a championship. This revelation has undoubtedly caught the attention of other teams around the league, who will be keen to make a move for the 23-year-old superstar.

For the Mavericks, this presents a unique opportunity to make a trade that could bring in multiple pieces to bolster their roster and surround Doncic with the talent he needs to succeed. With the right deal, the Mavericks could become legitimate contenders in the Western Conference and potentially make a deep playoff run.

It will be interesting to see how the Mavericks approach this situation and what moves they make in the coming days. One thing is for certain – the door is wide open for them to make a trade that could change the course of their season and the future of their franchise. Doncic may just get the fresh start he’s been looking for, and the Mavericks could be on their way to building a championship-caliber team.
