    The family of an OpenAI whistleblower have called for his death to be reinvestigated after it was ruled to be a suicide.

    Suchir Balaji, 26, a former OpenAI engineer who helped train the artificial intelligence systems behind ChatGPT and later said he believed those practices violated copyright law was found dead just days before he was called to be a witness in a case, his family said.

    Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26 in what police said “appeared to be a suicide. No evidence of foul play was found during the initial investigation.”

    The city’s chief medical examiner’s office confirmed the manner of death to be suicide but a congressman has now backed calls for an FBI investigation into the death.

    His parents Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy said they are still seeking answers, describing their son as a “happy, smart and brave young man” who loved to hike and recently returned from a trip with friends.

    In a new interview with KTVU, Ramarao insisted there were things out of place in his “ransacked” apartment where his body was found four days before he was due to be called as a witness to the OpenAI case.

    “The pin drive is missing. His computer was messed up. His desktop was left on for three days. It’s messed up”, she added.

    They claim he was called as a witness for a copyright case against OpenAI four days before his death.

    “You can see how happy he is. We want the world to see his happy mood just before his death,” said Ramarao.

    She added that there was some “sign of struggle in the bathroom and looks like someone hit him in the bathroom based on blood spots.”

    Ramarao says the family will conduct an independent autopsy after attention was drawn to the case by Tesla billionaire Elon Musk who posted an interview with Ms Ramarao labelling the case “extremely concerning”.

    On December 29, Musk posted: “This doesn’t seem like a suicide”.

    Khanna said: “My heart breaks for Suchir Balaji’s family and his mother, Poornima Ramarao, who I spoke to yesterday. It is a tragic loss. I trust that the appropriate federal law enforcement agencies will conduct an investigation.

    “Let them investigate and bring it out, rather than speculating about something. We want the truth to come out and a report from the authorities as to what could be the reason for his death,” said Ms Ramarao.

    Suchir first raised his concerns around OpenAI with The New York Times, which reported them in an October profile of Balaji.

    He later told The Associated Press he would “try to testify” in the strongest copyright infringement cases and considered a lawsuit brought by The New York Times last year to be the “most serious.” Times lawyers named him in a Nov. 18 court filing as someone who might have “unique and relevant documents” supporting allegations of OpenAI’s willful copyright infringement.

    He said gradually grew more disillusioned with OpenAI, especially after the internal turmoil that led its board of directors to fire and then rehire CEO Sam Altman last year.

  • OpenAI to release new artificial intelligence model for free | Technology sector


    OpenAI is releasing a new artificial intelligence model for free, after the company said it would speed up product releases in response to the emergence of a Chinese rival.

    The startup behind ChatGPT is issuing the AI, called o3-mini, after the surprise success of a rival product by China’s DeepSeek. It will be available without charge – albeit with usage limits – to people who use the free version of OpenAI’s chatbot.

    DeepSeek rattled tech investors in the US with the release of R1, a so-called reasoning model that underpinned the company’s eponymous chatbot. News that it had topped Apple’s free app store and claims it had been developed at a fraction of the cost wiped $1tn off the tech-heavy Nasdaq index on Monday.

    OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, reacted to DeepSeek’s challenge by pledging to “deliver much better models” and accelerate product releases. He had first announced plans to release o3-mini – a less powerful version of the full o3 model that has yet to be released publicly – on 23 January, days after DeepSeek unveiled R1.

    “Today’s launch marks the first time we’re bringing reasoning capabilities to our free users, an important step towards broadening accessibility to advanced AI in service of our mission,” said OpenAI.

    R1, the underlying technology for DeepSeek’s chatbot, not only rivalled its OpenAI equivalent in performance but was also developed with fewer resources, according to DeepSeek. This has made investors ask whether US tech firms will continue their dominance of the AI market and generate a return on the multibillion-dollar sums they have invested in AI infrastructure and products.

    OpenAI said the o3-mini model matched its predecessor, o1, in maths, coding, and science but at a significantly lower cost and with faster responses. Users on ChatGPT’s Pro package, which costs $200 a month, will get unlimited access to o3-mini, while users on the cheaper Plus tariff will have higher usage limits than free users.

    The power of the full o3 model was flagged in the International AI Safety Report published on Tuesday. The study’s lead author, Yoshua Bengio, said its capabilities “could have profound implications for AI risks”. He said o3’s performance in a key abstract reasoning test represented a breakthrough that had stunned experts, including himself. In some tests, o3 outperformed many human experts, he said.

    Two years ago, OpenAI launched the chatbot craze with the release of ChatGPT. Now it hopes to spark interest in a new wave of A.I. technology.

    On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled a tool called Operator that can go out onto the internet and perform tasks autonomously, like shopping for groceries or booking a restaurant reservation.

    “It can navigate websites and take actions on websites, much like you and I do,” said OpenAI product and engineering lead Yash Kumar in an interview.

    Artificial intelligence researchers call this kind of technology an A.I. agent. While chatbots can answer questions, write poems and generate images, agents can use other software on the internet.

    During a briefing with The New York Times, Mr. Kumar showed how the system could book a San Francisco restaurant reservation through the OpenTable website and buy a list of groceries through Instacart. Operator looks and behaves much like ChatGPT and other chatbots. The user types a request into a small window. Then the system responds as best it can.

    The user can watch as the tool opens a web browser and visits particular sites. Operator may make mistakes. But in some cases, it can correct these mistakes. During the demonstration for The Times, the system mistakenly assumed that Mr. Kumar was in Iowa, before correctly finding a restaurant in San Francisco.

    Operator is not entirely autonomous. At times, a user needs to correct its mistakes and provide additional requests and suggestions. For sites like OpenTable and Instacart, users must provide their private usernames and passwords. But OpenAI said that it does not store this private information.

    However, the company does capture data showing the way the system interacts with users and accesses sites on their behalf. It can use this data to train future versions of Operator.

    OpenAI said that, beginning on Thursday, Operator will be available to anyone who has subscribed to ChatGPT Pro, a $200-a-month service that provides access to all of the company’s latest tools. It plans to offer the tool via other paid services and eventually roll it into the free version of ChatGPT.

    (The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, accusing them of copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems. OpenAI and Microsoft have denied those claims.)

    In recent months, other leading companies, including Google and Anthropic, have unveiled similar tools. However, many of these tools, are not yet widely available.

    Operator is based on the same technology that underpins ChatGPT. This technology is what A.I. researchers call a neural network — a mathematical system that can learn skills by analyzing enormous amounts of data.

    Newer versions of this technology learn from a wide range of data, including text, images and sounds. In this case, Operator learned from images showing how people use spreadsheets, shopping sites and other online services. After pinpointing patterns in this data, the new system can use similar services on behalf of computer users.

    Mr. Kumar acknowledged that, like ChatGPT and other chatbots, Operator is still an experimental technology. But he said it would continue to improve in the coming months.

    “This is not the most robust thing in the world,” he said. “But it is way better than this kind of technology used to be.”

  • OpenAI to Launch AI Agent


    OpenAI has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered agent that can use a web browser and do tasks, just like a human user.

    Called “Operator,” the AI agent is set to be released this week, according to The Information. Operator will provide users with suggested prompts, such as finding a flight from Los Angeles to New York that leaves in the morning. Operator will not complete these tasks autonomously; the user still needs to approve any transaction. Bloomberg first reported on Operator last November, noting a January release date.

    OpenAI’s move follows in the footsteps of its competitors. Last October, Anthropic announced a similar capability for Claude 3.5 Sonnet, an AI model that is part of its flagship LLM family. The OpenAI competitor called the capability “computer use.”

    “Developers can direct Claude to use computers the way people do — by looking at a screen, moving a cursor, clicking buttons and typing text,” Anthropic said in the news release announcing the AI agent. However, Anthropic warned that the experimental features are “at times cumbersome and error-prone.”

    In December, Google announced its own web-browsing AI agent, called “Project Mariner.”

    Built with Gemini 2.0, Google’s latest version of its flagship multimodal models, Project Mariner can “understand and reason across information in your browser screen, including pixels and web elements like text, code, images and forms.” It then uses that information to complete tasks for the user by navigating the web browser. Like Anthropic, Google warns that it is “not always accurate and slow to complete tasks.”

    Microsoft Loses Cloud Exclusivity for OpenAI

    Microsoft will no longer be OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider for its AI models, the software giant disclosed in a Tuesday (Jan. 21) blog post.

    Instead, Microsoft will have the right of first refusal to host OpenAI’s AI workloads in Azure. This is a change from their 2019 agreement, when Microsoft became OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider after investing $1 billion in OpenAI. The investment was also three years before ChatGPT and generative AI took the world by storm. Since then, Microsoft reportedly has invested a total of nearly $14 billion in OpenAI.

    However, Microsoft will retain the exclusive rights to OpenAI’s application programming interface (API). The API is a set of rules, protocols and tools that let software applications communicate with each other. OpenAI’s API is how most companies access and integrate the startup’s AI models into their own applications, products or services.

    The change in terms come OpenAI on Tuesday named Microsoft as a technology partner in its new AI infrastructure project called Stargate, which aims to spend from $100 billion to $500 billion to build physical and virtual AI infrastructure. This includes the building of 500,000-square-foot data centers for AI processing. Ten data centers are under construction in Texas and will expand to 20. The first one is being built in Abilene, Texas.

    Microsoft’s AI Tool Creates New Materials

    OpenAI is taking its ChatGPT chatbot to the next level, adding a feature to automate tasks like planning vacations, filling out forms, making restaurant reservations and ordering groceries.

    The tool, announced on Thursday, is called Operator. OpenAI describes it as “an agent that can go to the web to perform tasks for you” and added that it’s trained to interact with “the buttons, menus, and text fields that people use daily” on the web.

    It can also ask follow-up questions to further personalize the tasks it completes, such as login information for other websites. Users can take control of the screen at any time.

    “Operator is one of our first agents, which are AIs capable of doing work for you independently,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post on Thursday. “You give it a task and it will execute it.”

    For now, Operator is only available to ChatGPT Pro users. It can be accessed at Operator.ChatGPT.com. OpenAI said it eventually plans to expand to Plus, Team and Enterprise users and to integrate Operator into ChatGPT. The company also said it currently has trouble with some tasks, such as managing calendars and creating slideshows.

    OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, said users can opt out of some of the company’s training data collection by turning off the “Improve the model for everyone” setting in ChatGPT, meaning data in Operator will not be used to train its models. The company also said users can delete all browsing data and log out of all sites “with one click” in the privacy section.

    Operator directly competes with an earlier release from Anthropic, the Amazon-backed AI startup behind the Claude chatbot that was founded by ex-OpenAI research executives.

    In October, Anthropic introduced “Computer Use,” a capability that allowed its AI agents to use computers like humans to complete complex tasks. Anthropic said it can interpret what’s on a computer screen, select buttons, enter text, navigate websites and execute tasks through any software and real-time internet browsing.

    The tool can “use computers in basically the same way that we do,” Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s chief science officer, told CNBC in an interview at the time. He said it can do tasks with “tens or even hundreds of steps.”

    The generative AI market, which includes OpenAI and Anthropic as well as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta, is predicted to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.

    Google recently agreed to a new investment of more than $1 billion in Anthropic, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to CNBC this week. Anthropic is in late-stage talks to raise a funding round of $2 billion at a $60 billion valuation led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, CNBC reported earlier this month.

    OpenAI’s latest announcement comes as the company pushes toward a potential future of artificial general intelligence. AGI is a vaguely defined benchmark referring to AI that equals or surpasses human intellect on a wide range of tasks. Experts are split on whether it’s attainable and how long it could take.

    Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, whose company provides training data to key AI players, said Thursday in an interview with CNBC that he defines AGI as “powerful AI systems that are able to use a computer just like you or I could.” He said it will likely take two to four years to reach that level of the technology.
