  • SRH Opener Lit Up Wankhede With Stunning Fifty Vs England In 5th T20I

IND Vs ENG, 5th T20I: Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma etches his name in the history books by scoring a record-breaking fifty against England in the 5th T20I at the Wankhede Stadium.

The stylish left-handed batsman has accomplished an astonishing feat by smashing India’s 2nd fastest T20I fifty, with him taking just 17 balls to reac the mark.

    Watch the highlights here:

The Indian batter has truly made his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, proud today, as the latter holds the record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian. The legendary all-rounder achieved the feat against the same opposition at the T20 World Cup 2007 back in September 2007, where he smashed Stuart Broad for those iconic 6 sixes off an over, and scored his fifty in just 12 balls.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener, Jason Roy, lit up the Wankhede Stadium with a stunning fifty in the 5th T20I against England. Roy’s explosive innings set the tone for the rest of the match, as he smashed boundaries all around the ground and showcased his immense talent with the bat.

The English opener’s fifty came off just 30 balls, as he dismantled the England bowlers with ease. His aggressive approach put the opposition on the back foot from the very beginning, and he continued to pile on the runs with his aggressive stroke play.

Roy’s innings was a display of pure class and power, as he effortlessly found the gaps and sent the ball flying to all parts of the ground. His ability to accelerate the run rate and keep the scoreboard ticking over was crucial for SRH, as they posted a competitive total for England to chase.

Overall, it was a masterful display of batting from Jason Roy, and his fifty was a testament to his skill and talent as a top-order batsman. SRH will be hoping that he can continue his good form in the upcoming matches and lead them to victory in the T20I series.

  • Chargers fall to Michigan Tech 5-2 in season opener

A young Hillsdale College men’s tennis team hung with visiting Michigan Tech on its season opener on Saturday, but couldn’t pull out a victory in a 5-2 home loss.

Freshman Alex Cordero Lopez led the Chargers with an undefeated showing on the day against the Huskies, pulling out a hard-fought three-set victory over Michigan Tech’s Laurent Teysseire 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and also teaming with fellow freshman Ryan Paapzov for a well-earned 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles as well for the Chargers.

Sophomore Henry Hammond also showed grit for Hillsdale, rallying from a 3-6 first-set defeat at No. 5 singles against Michigan Tech’s Sarth Bansode with a 6-3 second set win to force a tiebreak, then gutting out a 10-7 victory to secure the match and the point for the Chargers.

Although Hillsdale was competitive in other flights, sealing the deal proved difficult against the more experienced Huskies. Freshman Rintaro Goda came the closest at No. 6 singles, pushing Michigan Tech’s Ian Pinnoo to a second-set tiebreak before falling 2-6, 6-7 (3).

Hillsdale (0-1) will learn from its opener and look to pick up a victory with two more home matches next weekend, starting with a Saturday match against Lake Superior State.

    France v Wales preview

Four years have passed since Wales lifted the Six Nations trophy, and they come into the 2025 tournament as a shadow of their former selves. It’s been quite the fall from grace, with a downturn in results spiralling into downfall and outright crisis. Last year, Wales finished rock-bottom, losing all five of their matches, including to the habitual wooden-spoon holders Italy.

They have not won a competitive fixture since, with their winless streak now standing at 12 games. To put that into context, 1937 was the last time they went through a calendar year without a win.

In the most recent 2024 Autumn Internationals they were beaten at home by Fiji before being humbled by Australia and South Africa. As such, pressure on head coach Warren Gatland, who oversaw such a successful and feel-good period for Welsh rugby, intensified at the end of the year. The Welsh Rugby Union has stood by Gatland for the Six Nations, but the federation itself has come under fire for its management of the sport in Wales and the development of a new generation to replace what’s starting to seem like a golden one.

Of the squad that won Wales’ last game, in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, only 15 players remain to take a place in the 34-man squad for the Six Nations. Stalwarts like Leigh Halfpenny, Dan Biggar, and Alun Wyn Jones retired after that World Cup, leaving a youthful squad scrambling to establish itself.

France, in complete contrast, are flying high. They missed out on the Six Nations trophy last year but they ooze confidence right now, not least after beating the All Blacks in the Autumn Internationals.

Antoine Dupont is the mega-star at the heart of the French side, and he’ll lead the team into battle as the captain. He’ll link up with the likes of Romain Ntamack and Thomas Ramos, and when you put together those sorts of players from Toulouse, the dominant force in club rugby right now, you already have a massively dangerous side.

France expect to be challenging for the title in a few weeks’ time, and nothing less than a win will realistically be good enough. For a team with this quality and this confidence, with a feverish home crowd under the lights on the opening night of the Six Nations… Wales start to seem a bit like lambs to the slaughter.

  • Six Nations: Williams, Adams and Jenkins return for Wales’ opener

British and Irish Lions duo Josh Adams and Liam Williams return for Wales’ Six Nations opener against France in Paris on Friday.

Wing Adams has not featured for Wales since the 2024 Six Nations, while full-back Williams’ most recent international appearance was on last summer’s tour of Australia.

With more than 150 caps combined, they bring a wealth of experience for what promises to be a stern test in Paris.

Dafydd Jenkins, Wales’ captain in the 2024 Six Nations, is also back in the side at lock.

Williams was absent for last year’s tournament as a result of his stint in Japanese rugby, but returns after rejoining Saracens in November.

Evan Lloyd and Henry Thomas are given their first Wales starts in the front row alongside Gareth Thomas, while lock Will Rowlands partners Jenkins in the second row.

Wales captain Jac Morgan starts at flanker with James Botham on the other side of the scrum while Aaron Wainwright has proved his fitness to start at number eight.

Taulupe Faletau misses out, with Wales head coach Warren Gatland saying he was not quite ready after suffering a knee injury earlier this month.

Ben Thomas is given the nod ahead of Dan Edwards at fly-half, with the latter set to win his first cap from the bench.

Tomos Williams will partner Thomas at half-back, while Owen Watkin and Nick Tompkins form an experienced midfield.

Tom Rogers and Adams are named on the wings, with Williams starting at full-back.

Wales will kick off their Six Nations campaign with a strong lineup as three key players return for their opener against Ireland. Liam Williams, Josh Adams, and Alun Wyn Jones have all been named in the starting XV, providing a major boost for the Welsh side.

Williams, who plays for Scarlets, will bring his attacking prowess and experience to the backline, while Adams, who currently plays for Cardiff Blues, will add pace and finishing ability on the wing. Jones, the veteran lock who captains the team, will provide leadership and physicality in the pack.

With these key players back in the mix, Wales will be looking to start their Six Nations campaign on a high note and build momentum for the rest of the tournament. Fans will be eagerly anticipating seeing these star players back in action and hoping for a strong performance from the Welsh team.

  • France v Wales: Six Nations 2025 opener – live | Six Nations 2025

    Key events

A minute applause for former France Under-18 international Medhi Narjissi, who was swept away to his death off a South African beach back in August.

Then the anthems, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau” followed by “La Marseillaise”.

The French, illuminated in a field otherwise covered in darkness, belt out their nation’s battle cry acapella. Wow. Good luck Wales. Those boys in blue are ready to run through walls. If Wales pull this off it’d be one of the biggest upsets in rugby history. No question.

It’s starting to rain in Paris.

Gatland says that might help his team and “even things up and make it more difficult to play.”

He says he’s already fostered a “siege mentality” and has encouraged the players to “enjoy the occasion”.

There are a bunch of new laws in place for this year’s Six Nations:

    • Conversions must take place within 60 seconds.

    • Lineouts to be formed within 30 seconds (same as scrums)

    • No stoppage for lineouts that aren’t straight if the defending team doesn’t contest.

    • 9s (or players at the base of a ruck, maul or scrum) have more protection from defenders (effectively given more space).

    • 20 minute red card – players can still get sent off, but after 20 minutes they can be replaced by a teammate, which means we can hopefully stop talking about red cards ruining games.

I was listening to the BBC’s Rugby Union Daily this week. Chris Jones and Ugo Monye asked every coach and captain which opposition player they’d want in their own squad. No surprise, just about every person said Antoine Dupont.

My fellow South Africans might be rolling their eyes reading this, but the more I think about it the more I think he’s the best player of all time, or at least on his way to becoming the best player of all time.

Rob singled him out in yesterday’s preview piece. Now that we’ve all gassed up the little genius, he better deliver!

Bill Preston has written in and has that loving feeling:

It’s one of my favourites sporting days of the year: the opening game.

The first set of matches is such a opportunity for teams to set their stall out and get a stomp on towards victory. The breathless momentum that can carry a team through the tournament can be propped up by the thrilling heroics we have come to expect to see on the pitch.

    I love it all.

Here’s looking forward to another great year,

    Hear hear Bill.

Just four Welsh players in tonight’s 23 played against South Africa in November, so it’s somewhat of a restart for Gatland tonight.

Club form has been rewarded and Cardiff’s Ben Thomas starts at 10. The Blues have carried the flag this season in the URC and are fifth in the table. Last season no Welsh clubs finished in the top half of the 16-team competition, so there are signs of improvement.

Wales are out to restore pride back in the badge.

So says Daffyd Jenkins, who spoke with Rob Kitson.

The lock, who became the youngest captain in Six Nations history last year, returns after an injury lay-off.

Wales have lost 12 in a row and, to be honest, it’ll probably be 13 by the end of the night. But that doesn’t mean they can’t achieve the goal Jenkins has set for the group.

More from Andy who says that French rugby “needs some Dupont magic”.

It hasn’t been the most harmonious of build ups for the side I’m going to pick now as 2025 grand slam winners (might as well pin your colours to the flag).

Some high profile players have been positively mutinous and the returning skipper’s dazzle could brush away those scandals.

Tonight marks the official start of the 25 years in the Six Nations. It was 2000 when Italy joined the party and shocked defending champions Scotland on the opening night.

Take a look at some of the best photos taken all those years ago:

    Wales team news

Jac Morgan finally gets to captain his country at the Six Nations, fullback Liam Williams and centre Josh Adams bring experience in the backline, Dafydd Jenkins returns. It’s not the All Blacks of 2015 but Warren Gatland has a better group than he had last year. Maybe they’ll click?

What that means remains to be seen. There’s a debutant at hooker, a debutant fly-half on the bench and Henry Thomas, who once played for England, plays for Wales for the first time tonight.

“They’ve been outstanding,” Gatland said of his team. “There’s been a good buzz around the group. They’ve been excellent. The next couple of days, it’s about coaches taking a step back and allowing the players to lead.”

Wales: 15 Liam Williams (Saracens); 14 Tom Rogers (Scarlets), 13 Nick Tompkins (Saracens), 12 Owen Watkin (Ospreys), 11 Josh Adams (Cardiff); 10 Ben Thomas (Cardiff), 9 Tomos Williams (Gloucester); 1 Gareth Thomas (Ospreys), 2 Evan Lloyd (Cardiff), 3 Henry Thomas (Scarlets), 4 Will Rowlands (Racing 92), 5 Dafydd Jenkins (Exeter), 6 James Botham (Cardiff), 7 Jac Morgan (Ospreys, captain), 8 Aaron Wainwright (Dragons).

Replacements: Elliot Dee (Dragons), Nicky Smith (Leicester), Keiron Assiratti (Cardiff), Freddie Thomas (Gloucester), Tommy Reffell (Leicester), Rhodri Williams (Dragons), Dan Edwards (Ospreys), Blair Murray (Scarlets).

    France team news

Dumack returns after 18 months. I normally hate portmanteaus but the half-back pair of the two Toulouse generals deserves one. Romain Ntamack missed the 2023 World Cup with a knee injury and then 2024 with a twanged calf. He’s back at 10 to reprise his double act with Antoine Dupont.

Bordeaux’s try-machine Damian Penaud is absent, joining centre Gaël Fickou, lock Thibaud Flament and the loose forward Charles Ollivon on the injury list. But it’s still a team stacked with quality and heft.

Pierre-Louis Barassi wins his fourth cap after a four year hiatus while former skipper Grégory Alldritt starts in the back row. Big hitters on a 6-2 bench lie in wait.

France: 15 Thomas Ramos (Toulouse); 14 Théo Attissogbé (Pau), 13 Pierre-Louis Barassi (Toulouse), 12 Yoram Moefana (Bordeaux Bègles), Louis Bielle-Biarrey (Bordeaux Bègles); 10 Romain Ntamack (Toulouse), 9 Antoine Dupont (Toulouse, capt); 1 Jean-Baptiste Gros (Toulon), 2 Peato Mauvaka (Toulouse), 3 Uini Atonio (La Rochelle), 4 Alexandre Roumat (Toulouse), 5 Emmanuel Meafou (Toulouse), 6 François Cros (Toulouse), 7 Paul Boudehent (La Rochelle), 8 Grégory Alldritt (La Rochelle)

Replacements: Julien Marchand (Toulouse), Cyril Baille (Toulouse), Georges-Henri Colombe (La Rochelle), Hugo Auradou (Pau), Mickaël Guillard (Lyon), Oscar Jégou (La Rochelle), Nolann Le Garrec (Racing 92), Émilien Gailleton (Pau).

    Preamble

    Daniel Gallan

    Daniel Gallan

The day has arrived. As Andy Bull said,

“Every Six Nations marks a transition, it begins in the winter and finishes in the spring. One of the reasons it is loved so much is that it fills the bleakest weekends of the year and we know that once it is over the sun will be coming along soon enough.”

This 25th edition feels a little special already. Maybe it’s the the fact that every side has something to prove. Maybe it’s the looming Lions tour. Maybe it’s that at least half the sides will fancy themselves. Maybe it’s the return of the world’s best player.

Is Antoine Dupont the best of all time? It’s a question that’ll run til March, which gives him plenty of time to answer it as he takes aim at a grand slam.

Kicking off in Paris under lights against Wales is possibly the best draw on the table. Which is why Warren Gatland’s troops, despite their dismal run, should feel absolutely no pressure.

Of course they’re playing for a nation’s pride and their own self respect, but no one’s given them a prayer. If they step into that arena and fly into contact, box smart and back themselves, they could leave with heads held high no matter the result.

A great game of any sort will be a fitting launch for a tournament renowned for lifting moods. There’s a ton of negative news in this sport. Having this competition back feels like a treat.

Kick off in Paris 21:15 local time, 20:15 BST.

Team news, updates and more to come.

  • Gracie Abrams’s Fans Genuinely Launched A Petition To Replace Her Tour Opener, And The Whole Thing Is So Incredibly Awkward

    Generate Key Takeaways

Gracie Abrams has responded after her fans launched a petition to change the opening act for her European tour dates because they hadn’t heard of the announced artist.

Arturo Holmes / Getty Images for iHeartRadio

Last week, Gracie — who was recently one of Taylor Swift’s support acts on the Eras Tour — took to her Instagram story to excitedly share that US singer Dora Jar will be supporting her The Secret of Us tour.

For reference, the tour began in Oregon back in September, with Role Model being the opener for Gracie’s 2024 US dates.

Dora herself couldn’t hide her excitement after the news broke, taking to her X account to share her appreciation for Gracie for giving her this opportunity. She wrote: “This has been the light at the end of a tunnel in my life. So grateful and I CANT WAIT!!!! I love Gracie, I love music, and I love you.”

However, not everybody shared her enthusiasm, with some of Gracie’s fans insisting that Dora is too unknown to be Gracie’s support act.

In fact, one was left so disappointed that, on the very same day as the announcement, they launched a change.org petition called “Replace Dora Jar as the Opening Act for The Secret of Us Europe Tour.”

Summary of petition to replace Dora Jar as the opening act for The Secret of Us Tour, citing the need for more engaging performances

In this petition, they insisted that it’d be “virtually impossible” for concertgoers to “familiarize” themselves with Dora’s music before the European leg of the tour kicks off in Madrid, Spain, on February 8.

“Many fans, including myself, are baffled by the recent announcement that Dora Jar will be the opening act for The Secret of Us Tour’s Europe shows,” the petition began. “We are perplexed as we do not recognize her, and with less than two weeks till the tour, it’s virtually impossible to familiarize ourselves with her slow-paced songs.”

The fan went on to claim that Dora’s music is not appropriate for a concert opener, writing: “For a memorable concert experience, an opening act should set the mood and get the crowd excited, but Dora’s slow tempo songs may not achieve this goal.”

“It’s not just a personal concern,” they added. “According to Billboard, upbeat opening acts are essential to the overall concert experience as they set the tone for the headlining act in keeping the audience’s energy up throughout the show (Billboard, 2019). Keeping this in consideration, it seems only fair that a more well-known, energetic artist or band should replace Dora Jar as the opening act.”

“Please show your support for a more enjoyable concert experience by signing this petition,” the fan then concluded.

    change.org

While the petition has since been deleted, it created enough of a stir on social media for both Dora and Gracie to respond.

Dora’s initial response was to thank Gracie’s fans who had defended her amid the backlash, writing on her X account: “Hate comes with the job, the truth is this is the biggest outpouring of love I’ve ever received from a fanbase who is still unfamiliar with me. Gracie has beautiful open hearted fans and I am so excited for this.”

However, she went on to try and lighten the mood as she shared a Spotify playlist of her setlist for the tour and joked: “signed the petition but rehearsing these songs just in case I remain the opener!”

Dora then directly name-checked the fan who created the petition, writing: “Love u Dexter.”

But Gracie was a little more direct as she called out the “wildly uncool” reaction from this group of fans in a comment on an Instagram post about the petition.

Comment expressing excitement about performing with a talented artist named Dora, encouraging streaming of her work

“Just hearing about this absolute ridiculousness,” she wrote. “So wildly uncool and bizarre and also just does not remotely add up.”

“I’ve only seen everyone’s total excitement and couldn’t be luckier or prouder to share a stage with this talented wonder,” Gracie went on.

“Stream everything she’s ever made whether or not you’re coming to the show,” she concluded. “Dora forever and ever.”

Needless to say, the whole situation has left onlookers with a severe case of secondhand embarrassment, with many pointing out that a huge aspect of booking a tour opener is to platform lesser-known artists.

“it’s very embarrassing for gracie abrams fans to be making a petition to get rid of the opener. the point of an opening act is to give a small artist a chance to get new fans and for those fans to find new music. you don’t have to know all the songs just be respectful,” one person tweeted.

“wdym u made a petition bc u don’t like an opener….? go outside fr,” another popular post reads.

“why r gracie abrams fans acting like openers are supposed to be as big as the headliner,” somebody else asked. “like that’s literally the whole point of being an opener – growing ur audience??”

While a viral post about Gracie’s response simply concluded: “wow it’s so embarrassing that she saw it.”

  • Fans petition to have Dora Jar removed as an opener for Gracie Abrams: ohnotheydidnt — LiveJournal

Fans of Gracie Abrams have started a petition to remove Dora Jar as an opener for her Europe/UK tour. They state that her music is too slow tempo and 2 weeks isn’t enough time to remember her songs. They even go as far as citing Billboard.

    image host

Gracie has yet to respond but Dora Jar is not bothered.

This is a new level of fan entitlement. It is weird to me that they’re complaining about her music being too slow tempo when Gracie’s music is so slow (coming from a Gracie fan). Also I had no clue that people came prepared to remember the songs for openers they’ve never heard lolll.

    SOURCE

Fans of singer Gracie Abrams are petitioning to have Dora Jar removed as an opener for her upcoming tour. The petition, which has already garnered thousands of signatures, cites concerns about Dora Jar’s controversial behavior and problematic past.

Many fans feel that Dora Jar’s presence on the tour could overshadow Gracie Abrams’ talent and distract from the overall concert experience. Some have also expressed discomfort with supporting an artist who has faced allegations of misconduct and offensive behavior.

In response to the petition, Gracie Abrams’ team has stated that they are aware of the concerns and are evaluating the situation. They have not yet made a decision on whether or not to remove Dora Jar from the lineup.

Fans are urging others to sign the petition and make their voices heard in support of a more positive and inclusive concert experience. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • 1/25 Preview – Laferriere Returns, 12/6 Tonight + Road Trip Opener, Latest on Doughty, Big Sami Stat

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (26-14-5) @ Columbus Blue Jackets (23-19-7)
    WHAT: 2024-25 Regular-Season Game
WHEN: Saturday, January 25 @ 4:00 PM Pacific
WHERE: Nationwide Arena – Columbus, OH
HOW TO FOLLOW: VIDEO: FanDuel Sports Network – AUDIO – ESPN LA App – TWITTER: @dooleylak & @lakings

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Kings begin a five-game roadtrip this evening, their longest remaining stint of games away from home, as they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The Kings won the first game of the season against Columbus, a 5-2 victory at Crypto.com Arena back in November.

Forward Warren Foegele had a goal and an assist in the victory, while forwards Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe each collected a pair of assists and defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov scored for the first time against his former team. In total, Gavrikov has three points (1-2-3) and a +5 rating in four games versus the Blue Jackets since he was acquired via trade in 2023.

KINGS VITALS: Today featured an optional skate for the visitors, as expected following yesterday’s full-team practice day.

With two days in between games here, Darcy Kuemper is expected to get the start between the pipes tonight to begin the five-game trip. Kuemper has a lifetime record of 4-4-1 against the Blue Jackets, with a .939 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average, his second-best career SV% against any one opponent.

Based on how the Kings lined up yesterday, he’s a lineup projection for tonight against Columbus –

    Turcotte – Kopitar – Kempe
    Foegele – Byfield – Moore
    Fiala – Danault – Laferriere
    Jeannot – Helenius – Lewis
    Thomas

    Anderson – Gavrikov
    Edmundson – Spence
    Moverare – Clarke
    Englund – Burroughs
    Doughty

    Kuemper
    Rittich

The Kings went with 12 forwards and six defensemen last time out, their first 12/6 alignment since November, and will do so once again tonight.

Forward Alex Laferriere is confirmed to return to action tonight, while defenseman Drew Doughty likely will not play. Based on today’s morning skate, looks like Laferriere could come in for Akil Thomas up front, with the latter on late after today’s skate for extra work. More on both 14 and 8 below.

BLUE JACKETS VITALS: Columbus is playing its best hockey of the season, winning 11 of its last 17 games, despite a 7-4 defeat in Carolina on Thursday evening.

Per Jeff Svoboda of the Columbus team website, here’s how the visitors lined up last time out –

Entering tonight’s game, Columbus forward Kirill Marchenko leads the NHL with a +28 rating.

Marchenko leads the Blue Jackets this season with 18 goals and has already set career highs in assists (33) and points (51). The Russian winger has three goals against the Kings throughout his NHL career.

Storyline Of The Day – In The Grind
I’d say this is the most grinding time of the season for the LA Kings.

In many ways, it feels like a 12-game roadtrip. The Kings were home for two of those games, sure, but following five games and ten days on the road, the Kings were back in California for one day off, one practice and two games. Then it was immediately back on the road. Of a 24-day span, the Kings were on the road for 20 of them.

“We’re a little over halfway through the season now and everyone’s starting to feel it a little bit more, so it’s just how much can you dig in and want it more than the next guy,” forward Tanner Jeannot said. “That’s what it’s all about. I think we have a really good character group in there that can really dig in and get the job done when called upon.”

So, what’s driving the team through this five-game trip?

The character Jeannot talked about is important, for sure. Regardless of the situation, that’s important at this time of the year.

Currently, it’s a gauntlet of a schedule. Columbus and Detroit are among the hottest teams in the NHL, both playing their best hockey of the season. Then, it’s a rematch against Florida, the defending champions, after the 2-1 Kings win over the Panthers on Wednesday at home. Following that are two firm playoff teams in Tampa Bay and Carolina, the latter now substantially stronger than when the Kings left home on Thursday after acquiring forward Mikko Rantanen yesterday evening.

“You’ve got to have that mindset of when your number is called, just go out there and do your job,” Jeannot added. “We know that these guys are really hot right now and that they’re a really good team over there. We’ve got to be ready and go out and start the roadtrip off right.”

In many ways, being on the road feels like being at home for this team.

Jim Hiller felt that on the most recent trip, the Kings did a better job of playing the same way on the road as they did at home. Wasn’t that way earlier in the season, but last trip was better. This trip presents another challenge and, frankly, a greater one.

The routine of being on the road is different but structured. Not to mention the Kings are as experienced as any team in the NHL. Tonight will be the 27th road game the Kings will play this season, tying them for the most in the NHL. By the end of this trip, the Kings will be at 31 away games played of the 41 scheduled for this season. Nothing longer than a three-game trip the rest of the way home.

“We love the road, we have a great time together as a team,” defenseman Joel Edmundson said. “Obviously, we love being at home, playing in front of our fans, but I think the team bonding goes a long ways, just being on the road together, 24/7. Another road trip and we’re looking forward to it.”

    All starts tonight against Columbus.

    3 To Watch For –
    – Welcome Back, Laf!

While the Kings are still awaiting Drew Doughty’s lineup return, look for forward Alex Laferriere to make his own return to action tonight in Columbus.

Laferriere, like Doughty, was in a full contact jersey yesterday. He worked with the fourth line during line drills yesterday. He was slightly behind Doughty in terms of his return in terms of moving into the full-contact capacity but his recovery timeline was way shorter. Hiller noted that he’s only been out for a handful of days, so the team isn’t concerned with his readiness once he is healthy.

“After four days he was on the ice already, trying to get himself back,” Hiller said. “He’s fully conditioned, he’s ready to go. He’s probably been ready to go for a couple days, but we wanted to make sure that he was healthy.”

For Laferriere, he noted that typically with an injury, it’s the legs and the conditioning that is the hardest to find. He hasn’t lost those things, being on the ice since the team was in Seattle. He expressed an excitement to get back in tonight, calling it tough to watch from the sidelines, even if just for a few games.

    A welcomed return this evening.

    – So……Drew Doughty.

“We’re optimistic it won’t be too much longer, but you just never know,” Hiller said of Doughty this morning. “It’s been a long time. We’re going to make sure that when he does come back, that everybody feels comfortable. Coaching staff, trainers, Drew himself, everybody’s comfortable.”

    Here’s what we know.

Doughty has now been in a full-contact jersey for three consecutive skates, including yesterday’s practice which was higher paced and designed to challenge Doughty in uncomfortable situations. He was in the full-contact jersey today once again and was among the players who took the ice for today’s optional skate.

So, while tonight might not be the night, Doughty continues to work towards an eventual return. I think tonight was, at one point, an option but it’s got to be 100 percent. Could be Monday in Detroit, could be later in the trip. I would call it a true game-to-game decision and still sounds like all signs are pointing to a return on this trip.

    – Lastly, a random stat from LA Kings PR this morning. Just found it fun.

Measuring at 6’6, Samuel Helenius is tied with Brian Boyle as the second-tallest player to score a goal for the Kings, trailing only Steve McKenna (6’8).

Forward Samuel Helenius scored his first career goal in Wednesday’s win over Florida. Massive goal for the Kings. Helenius scored midway through the third period with his team trailing 1-0. Probably weren’t a ton more shifts coming the way of his line with that gameflow, with the Kings in search of the game-tying goal. Couldn’t have asked for a bigger moment and the big man delivered.

While a longer-term development project, defenseman Jack Sparkes is in the system for the Kings standing at 6-8. The only man taller, I believe, than Helenius. So, should he reach the NHL and score a goal, he’s presently the only threat to Steve McKenna’s mark within the organization. Sparkes is in his first season of collegiate hockey at Clarkson University, so he’s a ways down the road for sure. Big day to be a big man.

Kings and Blue Jackets. 4 PM Pacific puck drop to begin the final five-game trip of the season!
