  • Examining league hot seats, current openings with two weeks left in 2024 regular season

Examining league hot seats, current openings with two weeks left in 2024 regular season

    Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys find themselves in an unusual situation, though not one unprecedented in Dallas: Head coach Mike McCarthy and most of his assistants all have contracts that expire after the season.

After the 2014 season, Jason Garrett’s contract expired before the Cowboys signed him to a new five-year deal, as well as retaining his coordinators. Five years later, Garrett’s contract expired again, and after several days in limbo, the team announced it would not retain him.

The big difference between McCarthy and Garrett is that McCarthy — a Super Bowl champion in Green Bay who has a .612 career winning percentage, including a 49-33 mark in Dallas — may well have other head coaching opportunities upon hitting free agency, with teams that have interviewed him before (Jets) and previous employers (Saints) already having vacancies. If another team calls, McCarthy would be free to consider his options, regardless of whether Jones wants him to return.

There have been no substantive talks yet about an extension for McCarthy in Dallas. But owner Jerry Jones has been increasingly effusive in his praise of McCarthy amidst of a rash of injuries, saying after the team beat the Bucs and improved to 7-8 last week: “I can’t tell you how proud I am of the way the coaching staff, led by Mike McCarthy, the way that the leadership on this team, and really proud of these young players. They just are growing mentally and physically by leaps and bounds, makes me think we’ve got and outstanding future ahead of us.”

Coordinators Brian Schottenheimer, Mike Zimmer and John Fassel also have expiring contracts, sources say. One more reason for Jones to act decisively upon the conclusion of the season next weekend with a head coach he clearly holds in high regard.

As the 2024 regular season winds down, the pressure is mounting for several head coaches in the league who find themselves on the hot seat. With just two weeks left in the season, teams are already starting to make decisions about the future of their coaching staff. Let’s take a closer look at some of the current openings and potential changes that could be coming in the offseason.

    1. New York Giants: The Giants have had a disappointing season and head coach Mike McCarthy is feeling the heat. With a record of 5-9, it’s likely that the Giants will be looking for a new head coach in the offseason.

    2. Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins have struggled under head coach Brian Flores, and with a record of 4-10, it’s looking more and more likely that Flores will be on his way out at the end of the season.

    3. Chicago Bears: Matt Nagy has been on the hot seat for most of the season, and with a record of 6-8, it’s unclear if he will be able to hang on to his job for another year.

    4. Houston Texans: The Texans have had a rough season under head coach David Culley, and with a record of 3-11, it’s likely that Culley will be looking for a new job in the offseason.

As the regular season comes to a close, it’s clear that there will be plenty of coaching changes in the league. Keep an eye on these teams and others as they make decisions about the future of their coaching staff.

  • Ranking NFL head coach openings for 2025: Best, worst jobs

Ranking NFL head coach openings for 2025: Best, worst jobs

It’s a good time to be Ben Johnson. The Lions’ offensive coordinator has the Detroit offense thriving as Jared Goff & Co. push toward a Super Bowl. In between drawing up leak variations in which Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs pretend to slip to fool defenders, Johnson might be giving some thought to the variety of head coaching jobs likely to be thrown his way this offseason.

Of course, Johnson can take only one job. With three teams having already fired their coaches and more presumably expected after Week 18, not every franchise can land its preferred candidate (and some teams might prefer somebody else to the Detroit wunderkind). Which job should Johnson and his peers prefer? Which jobs would be most desirable? Least desirable?

    Subscribe: ‘The Bill Barnwell Show’

Let’s take a look at that very topic and run through the various actual and potential coaching openings across the NFL. Though there’s usually a surprise opening that pops up — like the Titans after 2022 and the Seahawks after last season — I’ve tried to focus on opportunities with teams that have been rumored to be considering a coaching change.

Keep in mind, though, this isn’t an argument in favor of any of these particular coaches being fired. There are teams such as the Dolphins and Titans, where I’d argue it would be foolish or premature to move on from the existing option. These rankings are taking the extremely aggressive assumption that these nine jobs will all come open over the next couple of weeks.

I’ll start with the least appealing job and finish with the most appealing one and describe what might be exciting or underwhelming about each:

    Jump to a team:
    Bears | Dolphins | Giants
    Jaguars | Jets | Patriots
    Raiders | Saints | Titans

    Pros: Ownership, division
    Cons: Roster, salary cap

The Saints are roughly where the Raiders were in 2011, when they were holding on for dear life with the league’s worst cap situation in the hopes of being competitive. That team had an excuse: They were attempting to win another Super Bowl for Al Davis while the legendary owner was still alive, which was made more difficult by some of the key decisions Davis was making, including hiring Hue Jackson to be the new coach.

The Saints don’t have that excuse or really any reason to operate the way they have over the past few years now that Drew Brees and Sean Payton have both left town. This season has continued the slide down the drain for New Orleans, which followed the firing of longtime Payton assistant Pete Carmichael during the offseason by dismissing coach Dennis Allen in midyear. Darren Rizzi has gone 3-3 as the interim coach, but this organization desperately needs to accept that the glory days aren’t coming back until it gets a fresh start.

As the 2025 NFL head coach carousel begins to spin, it’s time to take a closer look at the best and worst coaching openings in the league. From talented rosters to dysfunctional front offices, there are a variety of factors that can make a coaching job desirable or undesirable. Let’s rank the top head coach openings for 2025:

    Best Jobs:

    1. Kansas City Chiefs – Coaching Patrick Mahomes and a high-powered offense is a dream scenario for any head coach. The Chiefs have a strong roster and a stable front office, making this one of the most coveted jobs in the league.

    2. Los Angeles Rams – With a star quarterback in Matthew Stafford and a dominant defense, the Rams are poised for success. Plus, the bright lights of LA make this an attractive destination for many coaches.

    3. Green Bay Packers – Despite the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Rodgers, the Packers have a talented roster and a history of success. Coaching in Green Bay is a prestigious opportunity for any coach.

    Worst Jobs:

    1. Jacksonville Jaguars – The Jaguars have been a perennial bottom-dweller in the league, and their constant turnover at head coach doesn’t inspire confidence. With a young roster and an unstable front office, this job is a tough sell for many coaches.

    2. Washington Football Team – Dysfunction seems to be the norm in Washington, with a tumultuous front office and a lackluster roster. Coaching in this environment would be a challenging task for any coach.

    3. Detroit Lions – The Lions have a history of futility and a long list of coaching failures. With a rebuilding roster and a tough division, this job is a tough sell for any coach looking for immediate success.

As the coaching search heats up, it will be interesting to see which teams are able to attract top coaching talent and which teams struggle to find a suitable candidate. The competition for the best coaching jobs in the league is fierce, but the rewards of success can be immense.
