OpenAI Unveils New Agent Tool ‘Operator’
Two years ago, OpenAI launched the chatbot craze with the release of ChatGPT. Now it hopes to spark interest in a new wave of A.I. technology.
On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled a tool called Operator that can go out onto the internet and perform tasks autonomously, like shopping for groceries or booking a restaurant reservation.
“It can navigate websites and take actions on websites, much like you and I do,” said OpenAI product and engineering lead Yash Kumar in an interview.
Artificial intelligence researchers call this kind of technology an A.I. agent. While chatbots can answer questions, write poems and generate images, agents can use other software on the internet.
During a briefing with The New York Times, Mr. Kumar showed how the system could book a San Francisco restaurant reservation through the OpenTable website and buy a list of groceries through Instacart. Operator looks and behaves much like ChatGPT and other chatbots. The user types a request into a small window. Then the system responds as best it can.
The user can watch as the tool opens a web browser and visits particular sites. Operator may make mistakes. But in some cases, it can correct these mistakes. During the demonstration for The Times, the system mistakenly assumed that Mr. Kumar was in Iowa, before correctly finding a restaurant in San Francisco.
Operator is not entirely autonomous. At times, a user needs to correct its mistakes and provide additional requests and suggestions. For sites like OpenTable and Instacart, users must provide their private usernames and passwords. But OpenAI said that it does not store this private information.
However, the company does capture data showing the way the system interacts with users and accesses sites on their behalf. It can use this data to train future versions of Operator.
OpenAI said that, beginning on Thursday, Operator will be available to anyone who has subscribed to ChatGPT Pro, a $200-a-month service that provides access to all of the company’s latest tools. It plans to offer the tool via other paid services and eventually roll it into the free version of ChatGPT.
(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, accusing them of copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems. OpenAI and Microsoft have denied those claims.)
In recent months, other leading companies, including Google and Anthropic, have unveiled similar tools. However, many of these tools, are not yet widely available.
Operator is based on the same technology that underpins ChatGPT. This technology is what A.I. researchers call a neural network — a mathematical system that can learn skills by analyzing enormous amounts of data.
Newer versions of this technology learn from a wide range of data, including text, images and sounds. In this case, Operator learned from images showing how people use spreadsheets, shopping sites and other online services. After pinpointing patterns in this data, the new system can use similar services on behalf of computer users.
Mr. Kumar acknowledged that, like ChatGPT and other chatbots, Operator is still an experimental technology. But he said it would continue to improve in the coming months.
“This is not the most robust thing in the world,” he said. “But it is way better than this kind of technology used to be.”
OpenAI Unveils New Agent Tool ‘Operator’OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence research lab, has just unveiled a new tool called ‘Operator’ that aims to revolutionize the way we interact with AI agents. This cutting-edge tool is designed to make it easier for developers and users to communicate and collaborate with AI systems, ultimately improving the overall AI experience.
With Operator, users can easily train, deploy, and manage AI agents with just a few simple commands. The tool streamlines the process of setting up and configuring AI agents, making it more accessible for those without extensive technical expertise. This democratization of AI technology has the potential to accelerate the development of innovative applications across various industries.
Moreover, Operator is equipped with advanced capabilities such as natural language understanding, multitasking, and context awareness, allowing for more sophisticated interactions with AI agents. This means that users can have more natural and intuitive conversations with AI systems, leading to more efficient and effective outcomes.
Overall, the introduction of Operator represents a significant step forward in the field of artificial intelligence, bringing us one step closer to a future where AI technology is seamlessly integrated into our daily lives. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new tool from OpenAI.

OpenAI Operator AI agent can automate tasks like vacation planning

OpenAI is taking its ChatGPT chatbot to the next level, adding a feature to automate tasks like planning vacations, filling out forms, making restaurant reservations and ordering groceries.
The tool, announced on Thursday, is called Operator. OpenAI describes it as “an agent that can go to the web to perform tasks for you” and added that it’s trained to interact with “the buttons, menus, and text fields that people use daily” on the web.
It can also ask follow-up questions to further personalize the tasks it completes, such as login information for other websites. Users can take control of the screen at any time.
“Operator is one of our first agents, which are AIs capable of doing work for you independently,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post on Thursday. “You give it a task and it will execute it.”
For now, Operator is only available to ChatGPT Pro users. It can be accessed at Operator.ChatGPT.com. OpenAI said it eventually plans to expand to Plus, Team and Enterprise users and to integrate Operator into ChatGPT. The company also said it currently has trouble with some tasks, such as managing calendars and creating slideshows.
OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, said users can opt out of some of the company’s training data collection by turning off the “Improve the model for everyone” setting in ChatGPT, meaning data in Operator will not be used to train its models. The company also said users can delete all browsing data and log out of all sites “with one click” in the privacy section.
Operator directly competes with an earlier release from Anthropic, the Amazon-backed AI startup behind the Claude chatbot that was founded by ex-OpenAI research executives.
In October, Anthropic introduced “Computer Use,” a capability that allowed its AI agents to use computers like humans to complete complex tasks. Anthropic said it can interpret what’s on a computer screen, select buttons, enter text, navigate websites and execute tasks through any software and real-time internet browsing.
The tool can “use computers in basically the same way that we do,” Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s chief science officer, told CNBC in an interview at the time. He said it can do tasks with “tens or even hundreds of steps.”
The generative AI market, which includes OpenAI and Anthropic as well as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta, is predicted to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.
Google recently agreed to a new investment of more than $1 billion in Anthropic, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to CNBC this week. Anthropic is in late-stage talks to raise a funding round of $2 billion at a $60 billion valuation led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, CNBC reported earlier this month.
OpenAI’s latest announcement comes as the company pushes toward a potential future of artificial general intelligence. AGI is a vaguely defined benchmark referring to AI that equals or surpasses human intellect on a wide range of tasks. Experts are split on whether it’s attainable and how long it could take.
Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, whose company provides training data to key AI players, said Thursday in an interview with CNBC that he defines AGI as “powerful AI systems that are able to use a computer just like you or I could.” He said it will likely take two to four years to reach that level of the technology.
OpenAI Operator AI agent is revolutionizing the way we handle everyday tasks, including vacation planning. This powerful AI agent can automate the entire process of planning a vacation, from booking flights and accommodations to creating an itinerary of activities and restaurants.Gone are the days of spending hours researching destinations, comparing prices, and trying to coordinate schedules with friends and family. With OpenAI Operator AI agent, all you have to do is input your preferences and budget, and the AI agent will take care of the rest.
Imagine being able to sit back and relax while a sophisticated AI agent handles all the details of planning your dream vacation. No more stress, no more hassle – just a seamless and personalized experience tailored to your needs.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway, an adventurous hiking trip, or a cultural city break, OpenAI Operator AI agent can help you plan the perfect vacation with ease. Say goodbye to the tedious task of planning and hello to a stress-free and enjoyable travel experience with the help of OpenAI Operator AI agent.

Alibaba To Sell Chinese Hypermarket Operator As It Focuses On Core Business
Customers shop inside an RT-Mart hypermarket operated by Sun Art Retail Group.
Giulia Marchi/Bloomberg
Alibaba Group Holding has agreed to sell its controlling stake in Chinese hypermarket operator Sun Art for up to HK$12.3 billion ($1.6 billion), as the e-commerce company continues to dispose non-core assets even though the deal is expected to generate billions of dollars in losses.
The e-commerce behemoth said Chinese private equity firm DCP Capital, led by former KKR Greater China CEO David Liu, has agreed to acquire its more than 70% stake in Hong Kong-listed Sun Art, which operates the RT-Mart chain and the Costco-like M-Club membership stores across China, according to a stock exchange filing Wednesday. Dual-listed in New York and Hong Kong, Alibaba said the asset disposal will lead to 13.2 billion yuan ($1.8 billion) in losses attributable to its shareholders.
Thomas Chong, a Hong Kong-based analyst at investment bank Jefferies, says Alibaba’s disposal had already been expected by the market following an earlier Sun Art announcement, as well as the company’s December announcement of the sale of the Intime department store chain.
“The disposals align with its strategies to focus on core business and return value to shareholders, ” Chong wrote in a Wednesday research note.
The company first invested in Sun Art in 2017, and put in another $3.6 billion in 2020 as it sought to collaborate with the latter on a so-called new retail strategy, which once included omnichannel deliveries and a more tailored shopping experience using customer analysis software. But as the Chinese economy struggled after years of stringent Covid measures and amid a protracted property crisis, the deal failed to live up to its expectations as consumers spend less and less.
Today, Sun Art is suffering from declining sales, leading it to shut underperforming stores and laying off almost 20,000 employees, according to its 2024 interim report—its latest financial results available. Over the past five years, its shares have lost almost 80% of value, giving the hypermarket operator a market cap of about HK$18 billion.
Alibaba itself faces heightened market competition. In recent years it has been ceding market share to rivals including billionaire Colin Huang’s PDD Holdings, which used deep discounts to attract frugal shoppers amid China’s economic downturn. Now led by a new management team including CEO Eddie Wu, Alibaba is trying to reclaim lost ground by promoting more value-for-money products and using AI for targeted marketing.
Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has announced its plans to sell its hypermarket operator as it shifts its focus to its core business. The company is looking to streamline its operations and concentrate on its e-commerce, cloud computing, and digital media businesses. The hypermarket operator, known as Sun Art Retail Group, operates a chain of hypermarkets and supermarkets in China under the Auchan and RT-Mart banners. Alibaba acquired a controlling stake in Sun Art Retail Group in 2017, but has now decided to divest its interest in the company.
Alibaba’s decision to sell the hypermarket operator comes as the company faces increasing competition in the retail sector from rivals such as JD.com and Pinduoduo. By selling Sun Art Retail Group, Alibaba aims to free up resources and focus on strengthening its core businesses.
This move is part of Alibaba’s broader strategy to streamline its operations and optimize its portfolio of businesses. The company has recently made several strategic investments and divestments to position itself for future growth and profitability.
Alibaba’s decision to sell its hypermarket operator underscores the company’s commitment to focusing on its core strengths and driving innovation in the rapidly evolving Chinese retail market. It will be interesting to see how this move impacts Alibaba’s overall business strategy and future growth prospects.

Knicks, Rangers games set to go dark in contract battle between MSG and cable operator
Knicks and Rangers games on Optimum were set to go dark Wednesday as contract talks between the cable operator and MSG remained at an impasse ahead of a deadline before the ball drops.
As of press time Tuesday, neither side seemed willing to budge much over the carriage fees paid by Optimum parent Altice to broadcast MSG Networks, which is run by Knicks and Rangers owner James Dolan.
In the current deal that expires at midnight, Optimum pays MSGN $10 per subscriber, a source close to the situation told The Post.
Neither side seemed willing to budge much over the carriage fees paid by Optimum parent Altice to broadcast MSG Networks, which is run by Knicks and Rangers owner James Dolan. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The cable operator, which has about one-third of the roughly 3 million subscribers in the New York City area, is looking to reduce that fee in the new contract.
On Tuesday, MSGN sweetened an offer it floated weeks ago that would involve allowing Optimum to move it from the basic tier, meaning subscribers would have to pay an additional fee for the channel, the source said.
Optimum did not respond for comment about the latest offer.
“MSG Networks is demanding exorbitant programming fees – which could raise our customers’ cable bills,” the company said in a statement on Monday.
If no deal is reached before midnight, it will force Knicks fans to scramble to find another provider in order to watch the New Year’s Day matchup against Utah.
“Unsurprisingly, Altice continues to confuse its customers so it can get away with charging them more for less,” an MSG spokesperson said in a statement released late Tuesday,
Optimum, which has about one-third of the roughly 3 million subscribers in the New York City area, is looking to reduce that fee in the new contract. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post “They just implemented exorbitant price increases — nearly 50% for current subscribers and 70% for new subscribers (after expiration of promotional offer) for the package that now includes MSG Networks – and now their customers are at risk of losing coverage of their favorite local sports teams on MSG.”
MSG Networks also broadcasts games for the Islanders and the first-place New Jersey Devils, who take the ice Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings.
More than half of Optimum customers are not able to switch to another cable company like Verizon’s Fios, sources said.
If no deal is reached before midnight, it will force Knicks fans to scramble to find another provider in order to watch the New Year’s Day matchup against Utah. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Their only option to watch MSG during the Optimum blackout would be through its Gotham Sports streaming service, which costs $29.99 per month.
The battle between Madison Square Garden (MSG) and cable operator has reached a boiling point, leading to the possibility of Knicks and Rangers games going dark for cable subscribers. This contract dispute has the potential to leave fans without access to their favorite teams’ games, causing frustration and disappointment among viewers. The standoff between MSG and the cable operator has been ongoing, with both parties unable to reach a resolution on a new contract. As a result, the current agreement is set to expire soon, leaving the fate of Knicks and Rangers games uncertain.
Fans are left wondering if they will be able to watch their beloved teams in action, or if they will be left in the dark due to this contract dispute. The tension between MSG and the cable operator is palpable, with both sides digging in their heels and refusing to budge.
As the deadline looms, fans are anxiously waiting to see if a last-minute agreement can be reached to ensure that Knicks and Rangers games will continue to be broadcasted on cable. Until then, the fate of these games remains up in the air, leaving fans on edge and hoping for a resolution before it’s too late.
