  • Aston Villa’s moment of opportunity: Monaco is the biggest game of their season (so far)

Away trips tend to mobilise unity within a fanbase.

Your supporters are outnumbered and can feel a long way from home. Travel can be expensive and the sacrifices made are all for the same common cause. Matches abroad inspire this sense of union more than anything else. Especially for a club such as Aston Villa, involved this season in their first Champions League campaign and only second crack at European competition of any sort under manager Unai Emery.

Villa are the new boys, and every game in Europe still feels novel and exciting, be it the places they get to go, or the opponents they face. Tuesday’s match away to Monaco, for instance, will be the first time the teams have met.

Experience any of these excursions and it will not take long to spot one Villa supporter, one often not knowing the other previously, striking up a conversation with another. They can seemingly be heard on every continent-bound Eurostar train in the days leading up to a game — the Midlands accent is detected easily — and on every plane. One told a story of how they travel from Ireland to Birmingham for every home match.

Villa fans gather in the main squares of those destination cities. Before Lille away in the Conference League quarter-finals last season, they took over the beer tents on the cobbled streets in northern France and draped every barrier or wall with flags. They arranged kick-arounds next to roads, with locals joining in.

Some without a ticket had watching briefs in the nearby bars before Villa’s match with Olympiacos in Athens and encompassed the Acropolis. Even within Berlin’s crowded and complicated multi-platform rail station, en route to the RB Leipzig game this season, a Villa fan could be seen or heard.

A lot of them travel in their football shirts, even if the trip out is happening days before the game. While there remain issues off the pitch and tension endures, Villa’s footballing operations — a separate strand to the club — has provided even the most sceptical fan with the belief that Emery’s squad can win any match, compete in any tournament you care to place them in. Journeys to away matches, in England or across seas, are especially anticipated.

For all the delight over new adventures, Villa never intended to make it to the Champions League and simply take part, nor make up the numbers. From the outset, Emery made it clear to his squad that he did not consider this season to be a one-off, but a broader step in establishing Villa as Champions League regulars.

The Premier League will always be the priority, yet Emery views this competition as his managerial hinterland. “We tried to get Champions League last year and now it’s been a dream,” the Spaniard said in December. Among the managers with 10 or more wins in the Champions League in the competition’s history (he’s on 26), Emery has the highest average margin of victory at 2.9 goals.

Tactical strategies for Villa’s European opponents have been sharp and invariably carried slight deviations from domestic setups. He analysed ways to break Bologna’s man-for-man press, for example, to play through, and isolate Bayern Munich’s central defenders and to pull RB Leipzig’s narrow system apart by changing Villa to a wing-back shape.

Premier League form is showing gradual improvement but, though well-positioned, they have not matched there they’ve reached in Europe. The 1-0 home win against Bayern in October rubber-stamped Emery’s tenure and illustrated how far Villa had come in such a short period since his appointment two years earlier.

“Consistency” is Emery’s watchword. This is not necessarily related to performance, but emotion instead — he insists on players never reaching euphoric levels after wins or plunging to depths of despair following losses.

It was critical that beating Bayern was not Villa’s standalone moment in the Champions League. In his mind, and those of his coaches, it was just three points — the same value as a win against Bologna or Celtic would provide.

Pleasingly, they have built on that night. Barring November’s aberration in Bruges — where Emery immediately made his anger known to players — Villa followed the theme of consistency which has led them to this point and, conceivably, the biggest night of their season.

Champions League matchday seven: Who can qualify for the knockout phase? Who could be eliminated?

Victory in Monaco tonight in their penultimate league-phase fixture may not mathematically confirm Villa’s automatic qualification for the round of 16 in March, but would be significant. For a team just arriving on the grander scene, finishing in the top eight — and, in turn, bypassing next month’s 16-team play-off stage — would represent extraordinary progress.

Villa are fifth in the standings with 13 points, which is more than several European giants — Bayern, Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester City, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain.

Emery and his analysts have revelled in researching European opponents and detecting the often subtle stylistic distinctions from those in the Premier League. Some, such as Bologna and now Monaco, do offer divergence from the increasingly identikit football systems.

Monaco are fourth in France’s Ligue 1 and more than competent. While replicating the talent bank of years gone by — Kylian Mbappe, Thomas Lemar, Fabinho, Joao Moutinho and Youri Tielemans, pertinently, were all part of the same title-winning squad in 2016-17 — is a thankless task, they have a good blend and balance.

Adi Hutter’s team can be separated into three categories: the players once perpetually linked with the Premier League and who became familiar through international tournaments (Breel Embolo and Aleksandr Golovin), those who did move to England but have since levelled out back on the continent (Mohammed Salisu, Takumi Minamino and Denis Zakaria) and, crucially, the youngsters who will allow Monaco to make an eventual profit on them.

Eliesse Ben Seghir and Maghnes Akliouche occupy the flanks, with six of the XI who started Monaco’s most recent match, against Montpellier on Friday, under the age of 23.

Three of that side’s front four were 21 or under, and with the third youngest squad in Ligue 1, they have registered the second-highest expected goals (xG) rate behind serial champions PSG. They are well-equipped and youthful, with a 21-year-old midfield pairing of Lamine Camara and Soungoutou Magassa who are indicative of the intensity Hutter sets.

Monaco’s out-of-possession traits are highly effective, making the most tackles, ball recoveries and second-most interceptions of any team in the French top flight. They are 16th in the Champions League, so also on track to reach the knockout rounds with their league-phase finale next week being away to Inter at San Siro.

All of this is to say they will not be easy. And, in truth, Emery would not want it any other way.

The Monaco-Monte Carlo train station will change colour this morning, with a swarm of claret and blue shirts travelling along the Mediterranean coast from Nice before strolling around the city in the afternoon. They will gather in Casino Square and sing Emery’s name.

Thanks to Emery and his players, Villa have the opportunity for this not to be those fans’ last Champions League trip this season.

  • Brian Gutiérrez Seizes Opportunity with the USMNT

Brian Gutiérrez is no stranger to accolades. After a standout career in the Chicago Fire Academy, the midfielder became the 16th Homegrown signing in Chicago Fire FC history in 2020. Only 16 years old at the time, he was already a familiar face within the United States Youth National Teams, where he featured since 2017. Gutiérrez was named to the 2024 MLS 22 Under 22 class for the second consecutive year, after becoming the second Homegrown Player in Club history to appear in 100 or more matches.

Despite the success, one thing had eluded the Chicago-native: a call-up to the senior U.S. Men’s National Team. This changed on January 6, when Gutiérrez was announced as one of 24 players called into the USMNT’s January camp by head coach Mauricio Pochettino, and one of seven earning their first call-up with the senior team. He readily shared his enthusiasm with media members in a press conference held at the camp.

“I was really excited, really happy,” said Gutiérrez. “It’s been a great camp so far. The intensity of the group and of the coaching staff is always there.”

The significance of this call-up is not lost on Gutiérrez or Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. The January training camp has traditionally featured breakout stars getting a taste of the senior team. As a former head coach and player for the Stars and Stripes, Berhalter is well aware of what this could mean for the Homegrown’s future.

“This is an opportunity to really put his mark on the program,” said Berhalter. “I was involved in a lot of January camps and know exactly what it’s like. I also know that players come out of January camp and stick to the roster.”

Upon hearing about the call-up, Berhalter emphasized to Gutiérrez enjoying the time spent in camp. The midfielder has taken the advice to heart, in addition to connecting with – and learning from – an experienced coach like Pochettino.

“It’s been great so far,” said Gutiérrez. “I think he’s really intense with everybody, but at the same time, he’s always there for you, and always gives you that [pat] in the back.

“I think he’s making us better every day, and he’s showing us that we need to be bringing that intensity, and that’s what we’re doing right now.”

As a bilingual Chicago native, Gutiérrez relishes being able to communicate in both English and Spanish with the Argentine coach, adding that it helps make him and other teammates more comfortable without language barriers. But above all, it’s the chance to make his mark with the national team that matters to him the most.

“I think it’s more of a ‘seize your opportunity’ in the national team,” said Gutiérrez. “When you’re at camp, showing your best ability and obviously you’re performing with your club, that’s the most important thing. That’s how you get looked at. I think that from there, you can move on and you could talk about stuff like [earning more call-ups].”

The USMNT will open its 2025 schedule against 2024 Copa America quarterfinalists Venezuela on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Chase Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale. Kickoff for the USA’s first match of the year is set for 2 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast live on TNT, Telemundo, Universo, Max and Peacock, with Spanish-language audio available on Fútbol de Primera radio.

The team will then head to Orlando and complete the two-match Florida swing with a friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Inter&Co Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT. TNT, truTV, Universo, Max and Peacock will show the match live, with Spanish-language audio provided by Fútbol de Primera radio.

  • Uncovering Jessica Chastain’s Lost Opportunity in Twilight

Uncovering Jessica Chastain’s Lost Opportunity in Twilight

Jessica Chastain is a talented and versatile actress who has starred in numerous critically acclaimed films, such as Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar, and Molly’s Game. However, many fans may not know that Chastain was actually in talks to star in the blockbuster Twilight franchise before ultimately losing out on the role to Kristen Stewart.

In a recent interview, Chastain revealed that she was approached to play the role of Bella Swan in the Twilight series, but ultimately turned it down due to scheduling conflicts. The role ultimately went to Stewart, who went on to become a household name and the face of the franchise.

While Chastain has had a successful career in Hollywood, it’s hard not to wonder what could have been if she had accepted the role in Twilight. The franchise was a massive success, earning millions at the box office and launching the careers of its young stars.

Chastain’s talent and versatility as an actress could have brought a different dynamic to the character of Bella Swan, who is known for her quiet and brooding nature. Chastain’s ability to portray complex and nuanced characters could have added a new layer of depth to the role, potentially changing the trajectory of the franchise.

Despite missing out on the opportunity to star in Twilight, Chastain has continued to impress audiences with her performances in a wide range of films. From intense dramas to action-packed thrillers, Chastain has proven time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood.

While it’s always interesting to think about what could have been, it’s clear that Jessica Chastain’s career has been anything but lacking in success. Whether she’s starring in blockbuster films or indie darlings, Chastain continues to captivate audiences with her talent and dedication to her craft. Twilight may have been a lost opportunity for Chastain, but it’s clear that she has more than made up for it with her impressive body of work.

  • Miami Heat’s Kel’el Ware making most of rookie opportunity

Miami Heat’s Kel’el Ware making most of rookie opportunity

MIAMI — Sometimes it can be as simple as clearing a path. In that regard, Thursday night’s game against the Indiana Pacers stands as a reminder of the lengths the Miami Heat already have gone to get the length of rookie Kel’el Ware into the rotation.

With the Heat hosting games on consecutive nights as their schedule grows busier, it meant a quick transition from Wednesday night’s 119-108 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans to Thursday night’s game against the Pacers at Kaseya Center, as in the Pacers who now feature former Heat center Thomas Bryant as their backup big man.

In recent weeks, the Heat not only passed along Bryant to Indiana, but also have bypassed Kevin Love as their backup center to Bam Adebayo. That has opened a runway for consistent minutes for Ware, the 7-footer out of  Indiana.

The victory over the Pelicans was the latest example of how the size and length of last June’s No. 15 pick can add a unique element to the Heat mix, with Ware closing with 10 points, five rebounds and a blocked shot in his 16:42.

The growth, teammates note, has been tangible.

“I mean, me and Kel’el we hang out off the court almost every day. That’s my man right there,” guard Tyler Herro said after scoring 32 against the Pelicans. “So, yeah, I’m excited to just keep growing with him. He listens and soaks everything up.

“So every time he comes out of the game, he’s learned something from his little stint, four or five minutes, he learned something every time he comes out. He’s only going to get better. I’m just really excited to see him grow.”

While Ware playing time wasn’t the sole reason for the Bryant trade at the nominal return of a potential second-round pick swap, it meant one fewer veteran to vault.

Miami Heat’s rookie center, Kel’el Ware, is making the most of his opportunity in his debut season with the team. The 7-foot-1 prospect has been impressing fans and coaches alike with his size, athleticism, and skills on the court.

Ware, who was selected with the 55th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has quickly become a key contributor off the bench for the Heat. In his limited playing time, he has shown flashes of his potential as a dominant force in the paint, blocking shots, grabbing rebounds, and finishing around the rim with authority.

Despite his raw talent and inexperience at the NBA level, Ware has been a quick learner and has shown a willingness to work hard and improve his game. He has been putting in extra hours in the gym, working on his shooting, footwork, and conditioning to become a more well-rounded player.

With his size, length, and agility, Ware has the potential to be a game-changer for the Heat in the future. His development and progress throughout the season will be crucial for the team’s success, and fans are excited to see what he can achieve in the years to come.

As Ware continues to make the most of his rookie opportunity, he is proving that he belongs in the NBA and has a bright future ahead of him. Keep an eye on this young talent as he continues to grow and make a name for himself in the league.

  • Georgia freshman punter Drew Miller ‘excited’ ahead of Sugar Bowl opportunity

Georgia freshman punter Drew Miller ‘excited’ ahead of Sugar Bowl opportunity

NEW ORLEANS — Freshman punter Drew Miller admitted that he was caught off guard during his first practice at Georgia when Kirby Smart‘s voice came blaring in over the speakers. Miller has come a long way since those early practices, and his work has him set to play a significant role in Wednesday’s Sugar Bowl.

Miller is viewed as the presumptive starting punter for the Bulldogs’ game against Notre Dame following Brett Thorson’s season-ending knee injury. While Miller acknowledges that he is stepping into a challenging situation with a spot in the CFP semifinals on the line, the true freshman is looking forward to the opportunity and has hopes of helping his team get the win.

“I’ve been preparing, I guess, the whole season,” Miller said. “I haven’t done anything different the last three weeks. Just repping with the team, I guess. Repping with Beau [Gardner], the starting long snapper, getting comfortable with him. Just repetitions, and it’s just gotten better and better.

“I’m excited. It’s going to be fun.”

Like quarterback Gunner Stockton, Miller will be making his first career start in Wednesday’s CFP quarterfinals game. Like Stockton, Miller may lack experience going into the game but certainly does not lack talent.

Miller hasn’t played at all since arriving at Georgia, but he proved himself as a talented punter back in high school.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Miller was the No. 1 punter in the 2024 cycle and closed out his high school career on a high note. He averaged 47.3 yards per punt on 30 punts in 2023 and had 17 punts land inside the 20-yard line and 12 land inside the 10. Returns were few and far between against Miller, as he allowed all of 5 return yards as a senior.

Miller also played quarterback for his Mediapolis High School team and helped those Bulldogs win eight games and reach the IHSAA Class 2A quarterfinals.

Miller’s junior season at Mediapolis saw him average 48 yards per punt and deliver touchbacks on 51 of his 55 kickoffs. His play in 2022 earned him MaxPreps Junior All-American status.

“[Drew] would be our punter, and we think he’s really talented,” Smart said earlier this month. “He does a great job. He’s worked really hard to get the opportunity, and he punts every day in practice and does a tremendous job. He’s a very highly-recruited kid who we’ve got a lot of confidence in.”

Miller has big shoes to fill with Thorson out for the season. Thorson was a Ray Guy finalist this season after punting 42 times for 1,998 yards — an average of 47.6 yards — with 15 punts of over 50 yards and 22 punts that landed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Miller explained that Thorson has been a fantastic teammate and that the veteran punter seems to always be cracking jokes. On a more serious note, Miller credited Thorson with teaching him how to handle certain in-game situations as well as little tricks of the trade that should prove handy for the freshman.

“[He’s taught me] just a little bit of everything. Like, just different types of points and those things he knows I do,” Miller said. “I’ve been learning those from him, just little different techniques.”

Miller said he doesn’t have any particular goals going into a game, and he explained he takes it one punt at a time because every situation is different. He harped on his consistency as something he felt he has improved over his freshman year, which will certainly be important given how tight Wednesday’s game promises to be.

Miller waited in the wings behind Thorson this season and did his best to improve his game in the meantime. Thorson’s injury has opened the door for Miller, and the freshman is determined to make the most of it.

Georgia freshman punter Drew Miller is gearing up for the biggest game of his young career as the Bulldogs prepare to take on the Baylor Bears in the Sugar Bowl. Despite being a newcomer to the team, Miller is not letting his lack of experience hold him back. In fact, he is feeling nothing but excitement as he looks ahead to the opportunity to showcase his skills on a national stage.

“I am so pumped for this game,” Miller said. “It’s such a great opportunity for me to prove myself and contribute to the team’s success. I’ve been putting in the work in practice and I am ready to go out there and give it my all.”

The Twilight Casting Controversy: Jessica Chastain’s Missed Opportunity

In the world of Hollywood, casting controversies are not uncommon. From whitewashing to lack of diversity, the film industry has faced its fair share of backlash when it comes to casting decisions. One such controversy that has recently resurfaced is the casting of Jessica Chastain in the popular Twilight franchise.

Back in 2008, when the first Twilight film was in production, Jessica Chastain was reportedly in talks to play the role of vampire Alice Cullen. However, for reasons that are still unclear, Chastain ultimately did not land the role, which eventually went to actress Ashley Greene.

Many fans and critics have since pointed out that Chastain would have been a perfect fit for the role of Alice Cullen. Known for her versatility and acting prowess, Chastain has proven time and again that she can tackle a wide range of characters with ease. Her ethereal beauty and natural charm would have undoubtedly brought a new level of depth to the character of Alice.

Furthermore, Chastain’s star power has only continued to rise in the years since the Twilight casting debacle. She has received critical acclaim for her performances in films such as Zero Dark Thirty, The Help, and Molly’s Game, earning multiple Academy Award nominations along the way. It’s not hard to imagine the impact that her presence could have had on the Twilight franchise, both in terms of box office success and critical reception.

But beyond the missed opportunity for Chastain herself, the casting controversy also highlights a larger issue within the film industry. The fact that a talented actress like Chastain was passed over for a role in a major franchise raises questions about the casting process and the lack of diversity in Hollywood.

In recent years, there has been a growing push for more diverse representation in film and television, both in front of and behind the camera. While progress has certainly been made, there is still much work to be done to ensure that actors of all backgrounds are given equal opportunities in the industry.

As for Jessica Chastain, she has since moved on from the Twilight casting controversy and continued to build an impressive career for herself. But one can’t help but wonder what could have been if she had been given the chance to sink her teeth into the role of Alice Cullen.

In the end, the Twilight casting controversy serves as a reminder that casting decisions can have a lasting impact on a film and its legacy. It also underscores the importance of diversity and representation in Hollywood, and the need for casting directors to consider all actors, regardless of their background, when making decisions about who to cast in a project.

BOZICH | ACC opportunity abounds as Louisville awaits North Carolina visit | Louisville Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Southeastern Conference has five basketball teams ranked in the top 10. The Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams projected to make the 2025 NCAA Tournament field.

I’m not here to take another shot at the league that Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski made famous. I’m here to remind you that opportunity awaits Pat Kelsey’s University of Louisville men’s basketball team when the Cardinals play the first of 18 consecutive ACC games at 6 p.m. Wednesday against North Carolina at the KFC Yum! Center.

The ACC is not a ferocious league this season.

That does not mean the games will not be close, competitive and difficult to navigate. They will be. They are in every conference.

But it does mean the only ACC team that has separated itself from the pack is Duke. The Blue Devils are the only ACC team ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. The Blue Devils and Pitt are the only ACC teams ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA’s NET computer formula.

The Blue Devils are projected to win the ACC with an 18-2 record by Ken Pomeroy’s computer formula, which has Duke four games ahead of Pitt, SMU and Clemson.

Joe Lunardi posted his latest NCAA Tournament forecast at ESPN.com on Tuesday morning. His five tournament teams are Duke (a No. 1 seed), Pitt (6-seed), Clemson (8-seed), North Carolina (10-seed) and SMU (11-seed).

Lunardi ranks Louisville’s the next-best ACC squad, eight spots away from making the NCAA field.

Translation: Carolina is a 10-seed. Louisville is within sniffing distance of an 11-seed. A victory over the Tar Heels on Wednesday would be meaningful for the Cardinals.

    Quite meaningful.

The Cards have lost five straight to UNC by an average of 19 points. Their last win over the Tar Heels was Feb. 22, 2020, season two of Chris Mack.

Like U of L, North Carolina has lost five games this season. Like U of L, North Carolina has lost all of those games to teams ranked in the top 40 in Pomeroy’s computer formula.

In fact, all of UNC’s losses have been to teams in Pomeroy’s top 20: Kansas (No. 9); Auburn (No. 1); Michigan State (No. 20); Alabama (No. 8) and Florida (No. 6).

“Very, very, very good,” Kelsey said of the Tar Heels.

“Like us, they played one of the toughest schedules in the country, at least when I go back and look at strength of schedule and stuff like that.

“But you know, each one of their losses was very close, and against very, very, very good teams. Listen, they’re one of the most talented teams in the country.

“They’re led by one of the most decorated college players in the last several decades. Hubert Davis is a phenomenal coach. Obviously, the history of North Carolina basketball speaks for itself … we’ve got to be on our best to beat them.”

The metrics suggest a Louisville victory would not be a Shock the World moment. At KenPom, the forecast is UNC, 82-81. At Bart Torvik, it is UNC, 84-81. At Erik Haslam’s website it is UNC, 82-78. A one- or two-possession game.

    Most viewed sports stories

The Cards do not have to make a return trip to Chapel Hill. This is a grand opportunity to score points for Selection Sunday.

The ACC road hardly looks overwhelming. Ten of the 18 ACC programs have five or more losses. Three have already scheduled themselves to losing records.

Kelsey does not agree. He worked as an assistant at Wake Forest and also coached in the footprint of the league at Winthrop and Charleston.

“It’s one of the best (leagues) in the history of college basketball, if not the best,” Kelsey said

“I have the utmost respect for the coaches and the teams in this league. Rankings and things like that are for you guys. I don’t pay much attention to them. I just focus on the next task at hand, the next team we’re prepared for. And obviously we play an extremely dangerous, talented North Carolina team.”

A deeper look shows this: ACC teams have already lost four games to teams with computer power ratings of 200 or worse — and five more to teams ranked 100 or worse.

ACC teams have lost to Dartmouth (Boston College); Cornell (California); Charleston Southern (Miami); Cal Poly (Stanford), Jacksonville (Virginia Tech) and Elon (Notre Dame).

    Ugh.

Tony Bennett walked out on Virginia days before the season. Jim Larranaga quit Miami last week. Boston College, Florida State and Virginia Tech will likely be looking for new coaches.

Opportunity abounds for Louisville, starting with the visit from North Carolina Wednesday night.

Picked to finish ninth prior the season, the Cards should be able to exceed that.

“I don’t know what we were picked to start,” Kelsey said.

“You said we were ninth … not sure I even really knew that. I knew we weren’t picked first. That’s for sure. I don’t pay attention to standings. I pay attention to where our team is today.”

Where the Cards are today is in position to take a major step.
