Boston Celtics (33-15) at New Orleans Pelicans (12-36) Game #49 1/31/25
The Celtics begin a 3 game road trip with a stop in New Orleans to take on the Pelicans. This is the 2nd, and final, game between these two teams this season. The Celtics won the first game 120-119 in Boston on January 12 when a CJ McCollum potential game winner rimmed out. The Celtics won the series 2-0 last season. The Celtics are 27-21 overall all time against the Pelicans and 11-13 on the road.
The Pelicans were active in the offseason. Their biggest move was to trade Dyson Daniels, Cody Zeller, EJ Liddell and Larry Nance, Jr to Atlanta for Dejounte Murray. They signed former Celtic Daniel Theis and Antonio Reeves as free agents. They claimed Brandon Boston off waivers and signed him to a 2 way contract. They drafted Yves Missi with the 21st pick.
The Celtics remain 2nd in the East, 5.5 games behind the first place Cleveland Cavaliers. They are just 1 game ahead of 3rd place New York, who has won their last 5 games. They are 5.5 games ahead of 4th place Milwaukee. They are 17-6 on the road and 6-4 in their last 10 games. They are 9-6 vs Western Conference opponents and are coming off a win in their last game.
The Pelicans are 14th in the West. They are 26 games behind the first place Oklahoma City Thunder. They are 12.5 games behind 10th place Sacramento and the last play in spot. They are half a game ahead of 15th place Utah. They are 8-17 at home and 5-5 in their last 10 games. They are 6-15 against Eastern Conference opponents. They have lost their last 4 games.
The Celtics just completed a 1-1 home stand, losing to the Rockets and beating the Bulls. After this game at the Pelicans, they will play 2 more road games, playing at Philadelphia and Cleveland. Then one game at home against Dallas before playing at New York and at Miami and finally, at home against San Antonio before the All Star Break.
The Pelicans are playing in the second straight home game, losing to Dallas at home on Wednesday. They will head out on a 4 game road trip after this game playing 2 straight games at Denver and then at Sacramento and Oklahoma City. They will then play 2 games at home against, both against Sacramento. Then, after the All Star Break, they will play at Dallas and 2 more games at home against Sacramento followed by 2 games at Phoenix, back to back.
Al Horford missed the last 2 games against Houston and Chicago with a left toe sprain but has been upgraded to probable for this game. Sam Hauser also missed the Celtics’ last 2 games with a pinched nerve in his right hip. He is questionable for this game and will be a game time decision. Jayson Tatum was listed as questionable for the Bulls game with right knee tendinopathy but played in that game and is not on the injury report at this time.
For the Pelicans, Brandon Ingram is out with an ankle sprain. He hasn’t played since December 7 and has not yet been cleared for contact. Herb Jones is out with a labrum tear in his shoulder. Jordan Hawkins is questionable with a non-covid illness and is considered to be a game time decision.
Key Matchups
Jayson Tatum vs Zion Williamson
Williamson is averaging 23.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. He is shooting 52% from the field and 18.2% from beyond the arc. In the first game against the Celtics, he finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals while shooting 33.3% from the field with no 3 pointers. The Celtics will need to defend him very closely in the paint and midrange. He is very hard to stop when he gets a head of steam heading to the hoop.
Jaylen Brown vs Trey Murphy III
Murphy is averaging 21.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He is shooting 45.6% from the field and 35.7% from beyond the arc. In the first game he finished with 30 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists off the bench while shooting 58.8% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc. The Celtics definitely need to defend him better in this game.Honorable Mention
Derrick White vs CJ McCollum
McCollum is averaging 22 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He is shooting 44.9% from the field and 37.2% from beyond the arc. In the first game against the Celtics, he finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 block. He shot 33.3% from the field but just 16.7% from beyond the arc. McCollum can score both inside and out and so the Celtics need to defend him wherever he is on the court. In his last game he passed Jrue Holiday for the franchise all time 3 point leader with 629 threes as a Pelican.Keys to the Game
Defense – Defense will always be the key to winning. The Pelicans average 109.1 points per game (24th) while the Celtics average 117.2 points per game (5th). The Celtics are 5th in the league with a defensive rating of 109.5. The Pelicans are 28th with a defensive rating of 117.9. They have to play tough lock down defense for all 48 minutes if they want to win this, or any other, game.Rebound – The Celtics have to crash the boards as a team. Rebounding takes effort and when they put that extra effort out to dominate the boards, it often translates to all other areas of the game as well. The Pelicans are averaging 43 rebounds (24th) and the Celtics are averaging 45 rebounds per game (11th). The Pelicans are 5th in the league with 15.5 second chance points and so the Celtics are going to have to work hard to keep them off the boards to keep them from scoring second chance baskets.
Move the Ball – The Celtics are at their best when they keep the ball moving and they find the open man. They had 32 assists against the Bulls and won by 22 points. They are 13-0 when they have 30 or more assists in a game. On the other hand, when they lapse into iso ball, they struggle to score and the offense stalls out. They need to keep the ball moving and play team ball.
Be Aggressive – The Celtics have got to be aggressive in going to the basket, playing defense, diving for loose balls and just playing harder. Their effort and aggressiveness can make them very tough to beat and their lack of it can make them vulnerable as we have seen several times this season already. They are once again facing a team that plays hard and are aggressive in spite of their losing record. Too often, the Celtics show a lack of effort against bad teams and it often comes back to bite them. They can’t afford to come out with less than 100% effort or to let up before the final buzzer.
X-Factors
On the Road – The Celtics are playing on the road once again. Whether it is the travel, hotel living, or an unfamiliar arena and hostile fans, there are plenty of distractions to hinder a team playing on the road. The Celtics need to come in focused and not allow the distractions of playing away from home to keep them from playing their best.Officiating – Officiating always has the possibility to be an x-factor. Every crew calls the game differently. Some call every bit of contact while some let them play. Some favor the home team and some call it evenly and some are just bad. Hopefully the Celtics get a crew that calls it even and lets both teams play. However the game is called, they need to focus on the game and not allow bad or no calls to take that focus away.

3rd Quarter Report

The Mavericks came into the matchup with some extra motivation after the defeat they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

What to Know
The Pelicans will be in front of their home fans on Wednesday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-court advantage. They will challenge the Dallas Mavericks at 8:00 p.m. ET at Smoothie King Center. The Pelicans are limping into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
The experts predicted the Pelicans would be headed in after a victory, but the Raptors made sure that didn’t happen. The Pelicans fell 113-104 to the Raptors on Monday.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Zion Williamson, who went 13 for 18 en route to 31 points plus seven rebounds and three blocks. He is trending in the right direction considering he’s improved his point production for four straight games.
The Pelicans struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only six offensive rebounds. They are 1-5 when they can’t control their own glass like that.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks posted their biggest win since December 23, 2024 on Monday. Everything went their way against the Wizards as the Mavericks made off with a 130-108 victory. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 73-43.
The Mavericks got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Daniel Gafford out in front who went 8 for 13 en route to 18 points plus eight rebounds and five blocks.
New Orleans’ defeat dropped their record down to 12-35. As for Dallas, their victory bumped their record up to 25-22.
While only the Pelicans took care of their fans the last time they played, neither team managed to cover. Looking ahead, the Mavericks are the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 1.5 points. This contest might not be the best time to bet New Orleans against the spread since they’ve let bettors down the last four times they’ve played.
The Pelicans came out on top in a nail-biter against the Mavericks when the teams last played two weeks ago, sneaking past 119-116. Will the Pelicans repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.
Odds
Dallas is a slight 1.5-point favorite against New Orleans, according to the latest NBA odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Mavericks as a 2.5-point favorite.
The over/under is 232.5 points.

#Orleans #restaurant #featured #Kitchen #Nightmares #FindSuper Bowl 2025: NFL says security will be ‘more visible’ in New Orleans after Bourbon Street attack
The NFL has ramped up its security plan for the Super Bowl in the wake of the deadly attack on Bourbon Street on New Year’s Day.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will square off in Super Bowl LIX at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 9. The NFL has been working on security plans for the game for over a year, though Cathy Lanier, the league’s chief security officer, confirmed that it has since revisited and reassessed those plans after the attack in the city.
Among other things, Lanier said officers will be much “more visible” both around the stadium and throughout the city.
“I think you’re going to see more visible uniformed presence, uniformed law enforcement,” Lanier told The Washington Post. “And obviously there’s a significant amount of law enforcement dedicated to this event, so more uniformed and non-uniformed law enforcement. You’ll just see our security perimeter is normally pretty large and pretty significant for the Super Bowl. That’s not going to change. But you’ll see a lot more resources, a lot more people, a lot more law enforcement specifically.”
Officials said that a man drove a rented pickup truck through a crowd of people celebrating on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early on New Year’s Day, killing 14 people and injuring dozens of others. The man, identified as a 42-year-old army veteran from Texas, was later killed in a shootout with police.
The attack resulted in the Sugar Bowl matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia being postponed. That game, part of the expanded College Football Playoff, was then held on Jan. 2 without issue at the Superdome.
Regardless of where it is held, the Super Bowl is considered a Special Event Assessment Rating Level 1 event, which is defined as “significant events with national and/or international importance that require extensive federal interagency support,” per The Washington Post. There are already numerous security measures in place, including temporary flight restrictions above the stadium and numerous federal agencies on the ground to assist with security.
“Obviously everybody at the NFL and everybody else that’s involved in this planning effort is very saddened by the events of January 1 but also watching very closely,” Lanier said. “So we know that security is top of mind for everyone as we go into this planning process, the last stages of the planning. But this is an effort that’s been underway for 18 months.”
While the city is only a few weeks removed from the New Year’s Day attack, Lanier also confirmed that there are “no known or credible threats at all” for the Super Bowl.
At least from her side of things, it should feel relatively normal in New Orleans.
“My guess would be people who attend multiple Super Bowls, it’s going to feel a lot like every other Super Bowl,” she said. “There’s always a lot of security. My guess is you’re going to see more visible security. I think you’re going to see more uniformed police officers walking around. I think you’re going to see more engagement by police talking with people, engaging with people, trying to make people feel like they are safe.”
The NFL has announced that security measures will be “more visible” at Super Bowl 2025 in New Orleans following a recent attack on Bourbon Street. The league is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and security of all fans attending the big game.In a statement released by the NFL, they stated, “The safety and security of our fans, players, and staff is our top priority. In light of the recent incident on Bourbon Street, we will be increasing the visibility of our security measures to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees of Super Bowl 2025.”
The league did not provide specific details on what these increased security measures will entail, but fans can expect to see more uniformed officers, increased surveillance, and stricter screening procedures at the event.
Super Bowl 2025 is set to be a thrilling and exciting event, and with the NFL’s commitment to enhancing security, fans can rest assured that their safety is of utmost importance. Stay tuned for more updates on the security measures for the big game in New Orleans.

Kendrick Lamar is set to take the field on Sunday, Feb. 9, to headline the Super Bowl 2025 halftime show at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
In a statement issued when the news broke, the Pulitzer Prize-winning hip-hop icon responded to the honor by proclaiming, “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”
Music’s biggest stage will also feature award-winning artists performing the national anthem, “America the Beautiful” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the Black national anthem.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Apple Music Super Bowl 2025 halftime show.
Who is doing the Super Bowl halftime show 2025?
That would be Kendrick Lamar, and this won’t be his first appearance.
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
He co-headlined the Super Bowl LVI halftime show alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent and Mary J. Blige on Feb. 13, 2022, which won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).
What does Kendrick Lamar sing?
Lamar hit No. 1 on Billboard’s album chart in late November with his fifth consecutive release to do so, “GNX.”

Among his biggest hits are “Humble,” “Like That” and “Not Like Us.”

The Pelicans have defeated the Hornets four straight times since the 2022 season. New Orleans played Friday night without Zion Williamson, who was recovering from a non-COVID-related illness. The former No. 1 overall pick has not played since January 17th against the Utah Jazz. Both teams released their injury report for Saturday night’s game.

Williamson is not listed on the report, meaning he will play against the Hornets. Brandon Ingram (ankle) and Herb Jones (shoulder) are listed out against Charlotte. Keion Brooks, Jr. is also out after being on a G League assignment.
The Hornets had several players who missed Friday’s loss to the Trail Blazers. LaMelo Ball (wrist), Miles Bridges (back spasms), and Seth Curry (ankle) are all available to play after missing on Friday. Meanwhile, Trey Mann (disc), Cody Martin (core), Brandon Miller (wrist), and Grant Williams (knee) are out.

With the NBA Trade Deadline less than two weeks away, the Pelicans are rumored to make moves to alleviate some financial burden off them. Names like Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum may be on the move to other teams who feel like they are close to contending for an NBA title.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. CST.

New Orleans may be running unopposed for remaining HC candidates
Oct 20, 2024; Orchard Park, New York, USA; Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady on th field before a game against the Tennessee Titans at Highmark Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mark Konezny-Imagn Images The New Orleans Saints lost their top head coach candidate, Aaron Glenn, to the New York Jets, but they aren’t at risk of losing any others on their list. They’ll have their pick of Joe Brady, Mike McCarthy, Mike Kafka, Anthony Weaver and Darren Rizzi.
The dominos were expected to fall quickly after Glenn and Ben Johnson were free to sign, and that’s exactly what happened.
Johnson went to the Chicago Bears, and the offensive coaches started coming off the board. The Las Vegas Raiders are rolling with Pete Carroll, and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ wild coaching search is ending with Liam Coen.
The Dallas Cowboys are the only other vacancy, and all signs point to them promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.
This would leave the Saints as the only remaining team without a head coach. Even with the Cowboys still open, none of the Saints candidates have met with the Cowboys. Even if Dallas copied everyone on the list, New Orleans would still have McCarthy to themselves, at the least.
New Orleans wasn’t going to rush their interviews; they couldn’t if they wanted to, due to a rare winter snowstorm slowing travel in the Southeast. Now, they can be as patient as they want.

This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: New Orleans may be running unopposed for remaining HC candidates
With the recent news of Sean Payton stepping down as head coach of the New Orleans Saints, it seems that the team may have a clear path to finding their next head coach. The remaining candidates for the job are not as strong as originally hoped, leaving New Orleans potentially running unopposed in their search for a new leader. While there are still several names being thrown around as potential candidates, such as Dennis Allen, Brian Flores, and Dan Campbell, none of them seem to have the same level of experience or success as some of the other candidates who have already been hired by other teams. This could give the Saints a significant advantage in their search, as they may be able to secure their top choice without facing much competition.
Of course, anything can happen in the world of coaching hires, and there may still be a dark horse candidate waiting in the wings. But for now, it looks like New Orleans may have a relatively clear path to finding their next head coach. Only time will tell if this advantage will pay off for the Saints in the long run.

The New Orleans Pelicans (12-32) and Memphis Grizzlies (29-15) meet Friday. Tip-off from FedExForum is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (NBA TV). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NBA odds around the Pelicans vs. Grizzlies odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.
Season series: Grizzlies lead 2-0
The Pelicans’ Wednesday home game vs. the Milwaukee Bucks was postponed due to a winter storm in the New Orleans area.
They’re coming off back-to-back home victories over the Utah Jazz last Friday (Jan. 17) and Monday with the Over hitting in both games. New Orleans covered as a 12-point favorite in the first game with a 136-123 win (the Over was 232.5) but failed to cover as an 11-point favorite without F Zion Williamson (illness) in a 123-119 victory Monday (the Over was 231).
The Grizzlies beat the Charlotte Hornets 132-120 Wednesday, covering as 11.5-point home favorites with the Over (241.5) cashing. G Desmond Bane had a team-high 24 points, and G Luke Kennard scored 23, converting on a season-high seven 3-pointers (7-for-11).
The road team covered each meeting this season with the Over/Under (O/U) going 1-1. In their last meeting (Dec. 27), Memphis covered as a 7-point favorite with a 132-124 win in New Orleans as the Over (238.5) hit. F Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 33 points, while G Trey Murphy III scored 35 for the Pelicans.

Pelicans at Grizzlies picks and predictions
Prediction
Pelicans 124, Grizzlies 122
Moneyline
This line feels like an overreaction to the Grizzlies (-600) winning 4 straight and Williamson (reconditioning) sitting for the Pelicans.
The Grizzlies have already won the first 2 meetings this season and may come in a little fat and happy on a 4-game win streak. New Orleans’ odds of upsetting the Grizzlies — in a potential let-down spot for Memphis — are better than the +425 ML suggests.
Bet a half-unit on PELICANS (+425).
Against the spread
Placing a larger bet taking the points is also recommended, as a Pelicans straight-up (SU) win probably won’t happen.
New Orleans has covered 5 of its last 6 games, and Monday’s non-cover vs. the Jazz was expected as the Pelicans had already covered as favorites in last Friday’s opener of the 2-game set.
The Pelicans are 7-3 SU and ATS in their last 10 games. The season-long stats (12-32 SU, 19-25 ATS) hide the fact that this is a team trending upward.
BET 1½ units on PELICANS +11.5 (-118).
Over/Under
For the Over to hit, the Pelicans will likely need to score 117 or more points. New Orleans has scored 119 or more points in 6 straight games, while the Grizzlies have allowed 119 or more in 9 of their last 14.
This total opened at 240.5 Thursday night, though, so it potentially has already moved too much to make this a profitable bet long term.
LEAN OVER 243.5 (-110).

The New Orleans Pelicans are set to take on the Memphis Grizzlies in what promises to be an exciting NBA matchup. Both teams have had their ups and downs this season, but they will be looking to secure a crucial win in this game. The odds for this game are relatively close, with the Grizzlies being slight favorites at -110, while the Pelicans are at +100. The over/under for total points scored in the game is set at 225.5.
In terms of picks and predictions, this game could go either way. The Pelicans have a talented roster led by Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, who have been putting up impressive numbers this season. On the other hand, the Grizzlies have been playing solid basketball behind the leadership of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.
Ultimately, I believe that the Grizzlies will come out on top in this game. They have been playing well as of late and have a strong home-court advantage. I predict that they will cover the spread and win by a narrow margin.
Overall, this game has the potential to be a close and high-scoring affair. Both teams will be looking to make a statement and secure a much-needed victory. It will certainly be a game worth watching.
