Houston restaurants collecting money for New Orleans terror attack victims

    Here’s how you can help.

HOUSTON — The world continues to mourn the 14 lives lost in Wednesday’s devastating Bourbon Street terror attack.

Several Houstonians have close ties to New Orleans. Maybe nowhere is it more evident than in the restaurant business.

Several business owners are working around the clock to connect with those who need financial assistance because for some this fight is personal.

Cooking oysters is one of Jackquel Johnson and Royal Bellock’s favorite places to be.

“I really been cooking, man, my whole life, man,” Bellock said.

The co-owners of Oyster King Tiger 2 Dozen make sure every recipe is a love letter to family.

The northwest Houston staple is serving up a taste of the couple’s hometown, New Orleans. The oysters they’re making this week hold a little more meaning to them.

Through Sunday a percentage of oyster sales will benefit the victims of the Bourbon Street tragedy.

“Something to be able to give back, you know, to the city, you know, we, we’ve been in New Orleans our whole life, we love New Orleans,” Johnson said.

This is one of several restaurants stepping up to help the New Orleans community.

“When we had seen that atrocious terrorist activity that happened in New Orleans they just stepped up to the plate,” community activist Dr. Candice Matthews said.

Dr. Matthews has worked with several local restaurants on a number of fundraisers. This one is personal.

“It’s very tied, Texas and Louisiana,” Dr. Mathews said.

At Quotes on the north side, owner Kevin McCraw said he sees those ties daily, which is why he will be matching donations collected at his restaurant this week.

“We get a lot of people here that are from New Orleans. A lot of our customers are from New Orleans. A lot of our guests drive here from New Orleans,” McCraw said.

McCraw’s guests have turned into family and he will do anything for them, especially in the face of tragedy.

“This terrorist individual, he’s not Houston. He doesn’t represent Houston. We represent Houston. Let’s show them what Houston is about,” McCraw said.

There is a way for you to help from home.

This show of solidarity and support is a testament to the strong bond between the two cities, and the compassion and generosity of the Houston community. The funds raised will go towards providing assistance to the victims and their families during this difficult time.

If you would like to contribute to the relief efforts, please consider dining at one of the participating restaurants or making a donation directly to the cause. Every little bit helps, and together we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this tragedy.

New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson is supporting his community in the wake of tragedy. Williamson is donating $100,000 to the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Tragedy Fund, according to ESPN’s Malika Andrews.

The city is still reeling from a terror attack that took place in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day when the driver of a pickup truck rammed into a crowd of people celebrating New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street. At least 14 people were killed while roughly 35 more were injured.

With so many victims and their families enduring an unimaginable horror, Williamson wanted to help the community start to heal.

“As a father, son and someone who loves the community, this hit me hard,” Williamson told Andrews. “This isn’t just about money — but standing together and making sure no one feels alone.”

Williamson has been part of the New Orleans community since he was drafted by the Pelicans with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. Since then, Williamson has become a two-time All-Star while averaging 24.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 190 carer games.

Williamson has spent all six years of his NBA career in the city, and he is giving back in its time of need.

Among those killed in the New Orleans attack was Tiger Bech, a 28-year-old former Princeton football player. Bech was an All-Ivy League return man, and his brother Jack was a standout receiver for TCU in 2024.

Following the attack, the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal between Notre Dame and Georgia was pushed from Wednesday night to Thursday night. The Fighting Irish won, 23-10, to advance to the semifinal.

New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson has once again shown his generosity by donating $100,000 to the victims of the recent terror attack in New Orleans. The attack, which rocked the city and left many families devastated, prompted Williamson to step up and help those in need.

In a statement, Williamson expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families, and emphasized the importance of coming together as a community during difficult times. He stated, “My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence. I hope that my donation can provide some relief to those who are suffering and help them rebuild their lives.”

The young basketball phenom has been known for his philanthropic efforts, consistently giving back to the community and supporting causes that are important to him. This latest donation is just another example of his commitment to making a positive impact on those around him.

As the city of New Orleans continues to heal and recover from this tragedy, Williamson’s generous contribution will undoubtedly make a difference in the lives of those affected. His actions serve as a reminder of the power of kindness and compassion in times of adversity.

    What to Know

The Wizards have enjoyed a four-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the New Orleans Pelicans at 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday at Smoothie King Center. The Wizards pulled off an upset win in their last outing, and are hoping to pull that off once more against the 6.5-point favorite Pelicans.

The Wizards are headed into the match after thoroughly thrashing the Bulls: they outscored them in every quarter. The Wizards took down the Bulls 125-107 on Wednesday. The contest marked Washington’s most dominant victory of the season so far.

The Wizards were working as a unit and finished the game with 36 assists. That’s the most assists they’ve posted since back in December of 2023.

Meanwhile, the Pelicans’ recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their 11th straight defeat. They took a 119-108 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Heat.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Trey Murphy III, who scored 34 points. Dejounte Murray, on the other hand, was considerably less helpful: he went 0-5 from downtown.

Washington’s win bumped their record up to 6-25. As for New Orleans, their loss dropped their record down to 5-29.

The Wizards came up short against the Pelicans in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, falling 133-126. Can the Wizards avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

New Orleans is a solid 6.5-point favorite against Washington, according to the latest NBA odds.

The line has drifted a bit towards the Pelicans, as the game opened with the Pelicans as a 4.5-point favorite.

New Orleans cuisine restaurant in Houston hosting fundraiser for victims of New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street

HOUSTON – A New Orleans native who owns an oyster restaurant on the southwest side is holding a fundraiser, intended to support families of the victims of the New Year’s Day terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.

14 people were killed and dozens others injured after a man identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove a truck through the crowd.

The fundraising effort is happening at the Tiger 2 Step Oyster King restaurant on Richmond Avenue and Fountainview.

Owner, Royal Bellock, just got back from New Orleans Thursday and showed Deven Clarke how he and his staff are now using their native cuisine to inspire Houstonians to lend a helping hand.

“Even though we not there right now, we back and forth and we still in Houston, but we still from New Orleans and that’s where our heart at,” Bellock said. “We had just made it home (to New Orleans) from Houston, it was on the news.”

“Man that took all the air out me, it’s sad to bring the new year in like that, you know what I’m saying?” said Chef Derris Helton. “All them innocent people out there, know what I’m saying, just a terrible situation man.”

“A lot of us people that live in Houston have family members in New Orleans so we know what tragedy feels like,” said activist Candice Matthews. “We know what it means to bind together when it comes to a time of need.”

“We want to be real supportive,” said co-owner Jackquel Johnson. “Until Sunday, January 5th at 7 p.m., each oyster sale, we’re going to take a percentage of that and donate that to the GoFundMe that we have open for them.”

The main idea for the fundraiser is to raise money for the victims families, but also to raise awareness about the tragic incident that happened and the spirit of New Orleans. One that natives say is resilient and can never be defeated.

“We done been through Katrina, we done been through Gustav, we done been through everything man. Like they can’t beat us down man we gonna keep going no matter what,” Bellock said.

  • Gayle Benson’s donation to Greater New Orleans Foundation’s disaster relief fund will provide vital assistance to those affected by terrorist attack

Gayle Benson’s donation to Greater New Orleans Foundation’s disaster relief fund will provide vital assistance to those affected by terrorist attack

After a hurricane unleashed its damage on Louisiana in early July 2024, proactive thought was that inevitably, disaster again would strike New Orleans and the metro area, and that those affected would require speedy assistance.

That largely explains why New Orleans Saints owner/New Orleans Pelicans governor Gayle Benson made a $1.25 million donation to the Greater New Orleans Foundation in mid-July 2024, which became the Gayle and Tom Benson Disaster Relief Fund.

The horrifying jolt that the first disaster requiring assistance afterward would be a terrorist attack on Bourbon Street, during the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2025, amplified the fact that almost immediately the GNOF was prepared to assist those who were most affected by the attack.

“In the wake of the tragic events on Bourbon Street this New Year’s, we are fully committed to supporting the victims and their families,” Gayle Benson said. “Through the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s disaster relief fund, we will provide vital assistance to those affected, ensuring they have the resources they need during this challenging time.

“It is our collective responsibility to support our community in times of hardship, and I will continue to stand with New Orleans as we heal together.”

Fourteen people were killed and dozens more injured as the driver, Shamsud Din Jabbar, ran them down in a truck before being killed after exchanging gunfire with police.

“Because of Mrs. Benson’s gift, we will not have to scramble so much to get started when disaster strikes,” Andy Kopplin, the president and CEO of the GNOF, said during the donation announcement in July. The GNOF serves the 13-parish region of metro New Orleans.

“We will be ready to make those first grants to get our response and recovery going, and to get the additional fund-raising started,” Kopplin said.

Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, has made a generous donation to the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s disaster relief fund to support those affected by the recent terrorist attack in the city.

Her donation will provide vital assistance to those who have been impacted by this tragic event, helping them rebuild their lives and communities in the wake of this senseless act of violence.

We applaud Gayle Benson for her commitment to helping those in need during this difficult time and thank her for her generosity in supporting the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s relief efforts. Together, we can stand strong and support one another in the face of adversity. #NewOrleansStrong #SupportOurCommunity.

  • New Orleans victims’ families seek answers in deadly New Years attack

New Orleans victims’ families seek answers in deadly New Years attack

New Orleans victim’s brother says family will have to deal with his death ‘every day’

Just hours before the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, Jack Bech got on a phone call with his older brother Martin – an avid outdoorsman and former football star mostly known to friends and teammates as “Tiger”.

Jack, 22, was in Dallas visiting family members, while Tiger, a 28-year-old former Princeton alumnus who lived in New York, was in New Orleans, getting ready to celebrate the New Year.

“We just thought it was going to be another conversation,” he told the BBC. “I was showing him what we were eating, and he was showing us what he was eating.”

The two brothers would never speak again.

“I hung up the phone, and that was the last time I ever spoke with him,” Jack recalled.

Tiger was among the 14 people killed when a man ploughed through a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

The attacker, 42-year-old army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed in a gunfight with police after he drove a pick-up truck into the crowds, according to authorities. Though he posted videos online proclaiming allegiance to the Islamic State group before the attack, FBI officials said they believe he was acting alone.

While the identities of all the victims have not been made public yet, a picture is slowly emerging of a group of mostly young people, many of whom – like Tiger – were Louisiana locals.

Jack – who remembers his brother as his best friend, role model and inspiration – says that the close-knit Bech family will never be the same.

Most of the family is in the town of Lafayette, about 136 miles (218km) away from New Orleans.

“This is something we’re going to have to deal with. Every time we wake up, and every time we go to sleep, it’s going to be something,” he added. “Every holiday, there’s going to be an empty seat at the table.”

But Jack said that his brother “wouldn’t want us to grieve and mourn”. Instead, he has encouraged his family to remember him as “a fighter”.

“He’d want us to keep attacking life… he’d want us to go and be there for each other,” he said.

“I told my family that instead of seeing him a couple of times a year, he’ll be with us every moment,” Jack added. “Whenever we’re waking up and we’re going to sleep and we’re walking, when we’re at work, doing whatever, he’ll be with us.”

Among the other victims of the attack in the early morning hours of 1 January was Matthew Tenedorio, an audio-visual technician at New Orleans’ Caesars’ Superdome.

Tenedorio, who just turned 25 in October, had spent the earlier part of his evening at his brother’s home in the town of Slidell, about 35 minutes away from New Orleans.

With him were his father and mother – who just recently recovered from cancer.

His cousin, Christina Bounds, told the BBC that his family begged him not to go into New Orleans, fearful of the large crowd and potential dangers.

Despite their pleas, he went, along with two friends. When the news broke, his mother eventually got hold of one of them.

“They said they were walking down Bourbon, and saw a body fall,” she said, noting that they now believe it was a body thrown into the air by the attacker’s truck.

Amid screams and gunshots, Tenedorio was separated from his friends.

His family says he was shot, and believe he was killed during the exchange of gunfire between the attacker and police officers on Bourbon Street.

The BBC is unable to independently verify this claim.

According to Ms Bounds, the family’s tragedy has been made more painful by the slow, nearly non-existent trickle of communications they’ve had with local authorities.

“We couldn’t get any information when my aunt [Tenedorio’s mother, Cathy] showed up at the hospital,” she said. “There has been no information from doctors, hospitals, or cops. Nobody.”

“They have zero information… We don’t even know what happened,” Ms Bounds added. “Was he carried out by the EMS? Was he in an ambulance? Did he die instantly?”

These answers, she added, would “help people accept” what happened.

“But now it’s like total shock,” she added. “It’s not registering.”

The family has started a GoFundMe page to gather funds for Tenedorio’s funeral expenses – which Ms Bounds said have been made difficult by his mother’s significant medical bills during her cancer diagnosis.

Another cousin of Tenedorio’s, Zach Colgan, remembers him as a “goofball” who was quick to make a joke, cared deeply about animals and was an avid storyteller.

“He cared. He was definitely a people person. A happy-go-lucky guy,” Mr Colgan told the BBC. “It’s sad that a terrorist attack took him… no family should ever have to bury their son, especially for something so senseless.”

Mr Colgan, who has experience working with law enforcement in Louisiana, says he believes officers have done the best they can in an extremely hectic casualty situation.

“I know it’s chaotic. But part of closure is getting answers. I know my aunt and uncle weren’t able to get much besides ‘yes – Matthew was killed’,” he said.

“It’d be nice to know a little bit more,” Mr Colgan added. “If it was my kid, I’d want to know.”

Even as his family continues to search for answers, Mr Colgan says he hopes that the government and public’s focus continues to be on the victims, rather than on law enforcement’s response or what else could have been done to prevent the attack.

“I want every single one of them to be remembered,” he said. “They didn’t deserve this. No-one deserves this.”

The families of the victims of the deadly New Years attack in New Orleans are seeking answers and justice as they mourn the loss of their loved ones. On January 1st, a shooting occurred on Bourbon Street that left several people dead and many others injured.

The community is reeling from this senseless act of violence, and the families of the victims are desperate for answers. They want to know why this happened, who was responsible, and what can be done to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the investigation into the attack continues, the families are pleading for anyone with information to come forward and help bring those responsible to justice. They are also calling for increased safety measures in the city to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

The New Orleans community is coming together to support the victims’ families during this difficult time, but they know that true healing can only come with answers and accountability. As they wait for justice to be served, they will continue to honor the memory of their loved ones and work towards a safer and more peaceful future for all.

Heavy security planned for Orange Bowl pep rally, game amid New Orleans attack

MIAMI BEACH – South Florida police departments are preparing for the Orange Bowl next week in light of the attack in New Orleans  where 14 people died when a pickup rammed into a crowd of revelers.

On Wednesday, the Orange Bowl will bring more than 72,000 people to the game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens and the pep rally before it in Miami Beach.

With permanent barriers in place, Lincoln Road is one of South Florida’s most popular hangouts. The Capital One Orange Bowl Pep Rally will take place, starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police met Thursday to go over their operational plan in light of the tragedy.

“You will see a robust police staffing during that pep rally, not only inside of the perimeter, but there will be an outer perimeter as well to ensure that no one can really get through the barriers,” Miami Beach Police spokesman Christopher Bess said.

Police are not giving specifics, but told CBS News Miami they do not plan to put up the barricades to close Ocean Drive to cars. They will send out more police in uniform and undercover, monitor about 1,000 surveillance cameras and utilize technology.

“We have about 12 drone operators that will be available if needed. We’ll have SWAT personnel, and we have other tactical units to ensure that all resources are activated,” Bess said.

Police said there are no credible threats.

“Our intelligence analysts and detectives do social media sweeps. As we speak, they’ve been working diligently to assess social media,” Bess said.

The attack in New Orleans is weighing on the minds of some people visiting South Beach.

“What is happening right now, it’s shocking,” Martha Lukasik said while showing family around South Beach.

Walking on Lincoln Road, Serena Johnson and Ruth Monique were keeping their eyes open, while enjoying their visit.

“I am going to continue to be cautious. I’m going to continue to be aware of my surroundings, but I am still going to enjoy and live my life, because tomorrow isn’t promised,” Serena Johnson said.

Monique’s plan is to enjoy the moment.

“I’m very aware. I have a sense of peace, but it’s not going to stop me from living my life,” Monique said.

In the wake of the recent tragedy in New Orleans, where a shooting occurred during a football game viewing party, authorities are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of fans attending the upcoming Orange Bowl pep rally and game.

Heavy security measures have been put in place, including increased police presence, metal detectors, and bag checks. Additionally, there will be heightened surveillance and monitoring of the area to detect any potential threats.

The safety and security of all attendees is of the utmost importance, and officials are urging everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Despite the increased security measures, the spirit and excitement of the Orange Bowl festivities will not be dampened. Fans are encouraged to come out and support their teams, but to also stay aware of their surroundings and follow any instructions from security personnel.

Let’s come together as a community to show that we will not be intimidated by senseless acts of violence, and that we will continue to celebrate the joy of sports in a safe and secure environment. #OrangeBowl #SafetyFirst #NewOrleansStrong

Billy DiMaio, an Account Executive at Audacy, was among the victims killed in New Orleans during the early morning hours of New Year’s Day when a truck plowed into crowds along Bourbon Street. He was 25.

“Billy began his journey with the company two years ago as a New York-based Account Manager and was recently promoted to Account Executive on the National Enterprise and Direct Response team. He was much loved, respected, and appreciated,” Audacy CEO David Field wrote in a memo to staff.  “Beyond his professional achievements, Billy will be fondly remembered for his unwavering work ethic, positive attitude, and kindness. He was a true asset to the Audacy team, and his contributions and presence will be deeply missed. It was clear to all that Billy had the talent and character to ensure a very bright future, and his sudden passing has left a profound void in the hearts of all who knew and worked with him. Our thoughts are with Billy’s family and friends during this exceedingly difficult time. We extend our deepest sympathies to them and every member of the Audacy family who had the privilege of working with him.”

The city of New Orleans was left reeling after a devastating terrorist attack that took place last night. Among the victims was the popular music streaming platform Audacy AE, which had a large office located in the heart of the city.

The attack, which has been attributed to a radical extremist group, targeted several prominent businesses and landmarks in the city. The Audacy AE office was one of the buildings that was hit, resulting in the loss of several employees and significant damage to the company’s infrastructure.

Audacy AE had long been a beloved platform for music lovers, offering a wide range of genres and artists for users to enjoy. The loss of the company is not only a blow to its employees and stakeholders, but also to the countless users who relied on the platform for their music needs.

As the city mourns the loss of life and tries to come to terms with the senseless violence that occurred, our thoughts are with the employees of Audacy AE and all of the other victims of this tragic event. We stand in solidarity with the people of New Orleans as they begin the long process of healing and rebuilding in the wake of this heinous act.
