NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The suspect in the New Orleans truck crash that killed 10 people and injured 30 revelers in New Orleans on New Year’s Day was killed after a firefight with police, law enforcement officials told the AP.
The officials were not authorized to discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
The suspect rammed a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians in New Orleans’ bustling French Quarter district at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday along Bourbon Street, known worldwide as one of the largest destinations for New Year’s Eve parties, and with crowds in the city ballooning in anticipation for the Sugar Bowl college football playoff game at the nearby Superdome later in the day.

At a news conference, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the killings as a “terrorist attack” and the city’s police chief said the act was clearly intentional. But an assistant FBI agent in charge declared that is was “not a terrorist event.” The news conference ended before authorities could reconcile the two characterizations.
Alethea Duncan, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, said officials were investigating the discovery of at least one suspected improvised explosive device at the scene.
Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick said police officers would work to ensure safety at the Sugar Bowl, indicating that the game would go on as scheduled.
“He was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did,” Kirkpatrick said. “It was very intentional behavior. This man was trying to run over as many people as he could.”
Two police officers who were shot after the driver emerged from the truck are in stable condition, she said.
Officials did not immediately provide an update on the status of the driver, whether there was an ongoing threat to the public or offer a suspected motive in the fatal incident.

New Orleans – and specifically the French Quarter, the city’s vibrant historic center where Bourbon Street is located – was still in the throes of New Year’s celebrations when the vehicle ran into a crowd early Wednesday.
Crowds had gathered to attend an open-air concert and New Year’s countdown, with restaurants offering special deals and performances, according to the city’s official website. LGBTQ parties featuring dancing and drag cabaret were taking place elsewhere on Bourbon Street, the heart of the city’s gay community – just blocks from where the incident took place.
Many celebrations had been aimed at college football fans descending on the city for the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which is scheduled to take place Wednesday — including a parade that had taken place Tuesday.
On Monday, the New Orleans Police Department had said it would be staffed “at 100 percent” during the festivities, adding it had 300 additional officers assisting from partner law enforcement agencies.
It would also work with local, state and federal partners to provide security coverage citywide, the police statement said, adding that they would deploy “a strong presence of marked and unmarked police vehicles, as well as officers on foot, bike, and horseback.”
And on Tuesday, police said they would deploy drones around the 8th District, where the French Quarter is, throughout the New Year’s Eve festivities and Sugar Bowl events.
The city of New Orleans is in shock after a horrific incident on Bourbon Street left at least 10 people dead and many more injured. According to witnesses, a driver plowed into a crowd of pedestrians on the popular street, causing chaos and devastation.
Authorities are currently on the scene investigating the incident and trying to determine the motive behind the driver’s actions. The area has been cordoned off, and emergency services are working to treat the injured and secure the area.

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick says the city is heading in the right direction — a safe direction.
NEW ORLEANS — Despite the recent wave of violence, New Orleans ends the year with reductions in crime.
Murders are down 35% compared to last year with an even bigger improvement over a two-year period.
New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick says the city is heading in the right direction — a safe direction. According to data from NOPD, crime overall in the city is down 26% compared to last year as of Dec. 28. In a mid-December press conference, Kirkpatrick said she’s proud of the work the department is doing.
“We are getting safer. I’m proud of this city,” Kirkpatrick said.
Most violent crimes have decreased except for rape. Murder is one of the best improvements — with a 35% decrease from last year. Data shows that as of Dec. 28. There were 124 murders; at the same time last year, the city was at 192 murders. The improvement from two years ago, according to Kirkpatrick, is staggering.
“We’ve done an incredible job of lowering our murder rate in the city,” Kirkpatrick said. “Even if you looked at two years ago this day, two years ago we are over 50 percent reduction.”
The rates of most property crimes have also decreased.
Aggravated burglary is down 44% compared to last year. Theft is one of the few that have increased, with a 6% increase. Even so, leaders say they’re still pleased with the department’s work, especially considering the department is still working with a low number of officers.
“It wasn’t because we doubled the number of police,” Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams said. “They’ve just been doubling down day in and day out staying on top of these gains making sure we don’t backslide,” he said.
There was a recent wave of violent crime, starting with two separate shootings at the Nine Times second line. Kirkpatrick says she understands how that can impact how the community sees crime, but says she wants the community to know they’re still making improvements.
“I also know what the community has seen on the news, day in day out I’m like you,” she said. “I’m a member of the community and you see a spade of shootings you think wow are we safe and I’m here to tell you, yes you are.”
But the department adds there’s still work to do.
In a statement on Tuesday to WWL Louisiana Kirkpatrick said “The progress we’re seeing today is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the men and women of NOPD. Our commitment to intentional strategies and a holistic approach to crime reduction has been instrumental. With the support of our local, state, federal, and community partners, we’ve made strides in creating a safer city. People are safer today than they were yesterday, but we know our work isn’t done. It’s not just about the numbers – it’s about ensuring every resident feels that sense of safety in their neighborhood.”

In a promising turn of events, the city of New Orleans has seen a 26% decrease in overall crime and a 35% drop in the murder rate in the year 2024. This significant decline in criminal activity is a positive development for the city and its residents.
The decrease in crime can be attributed to a combination of factors, including increased police presence, community engagement initiatives, and targeted enforcement efforts. Law enforcement agencies have worked tirelessly to address crime hotspots and target violent offenders, leading to a safer environment for all.
While there is still work to be done to further reduce crime and ensure the safety of all residents, this decrease in criminal activity is a step in the right direction. The city of New Orleans is committed to continuing its efforts to combat crime and create a safer community for all.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – After years of spiraling crime, 2024 brought significant reductions across multiple crime categories in New Orleans, including a 35% drop in homicides.
Fatal shootings fell from 220 in 2023 to 143 in 2024, marking the second consecutive year of declines in homicides.
Non-fatal shootings decreased by 42%, carjackings by 40%, and armed robberies by 30%, according to data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission (MCC).
Officials and experts credit proactive policing, embracing technology, and enhanced offender monitoring for these trends.
“It is helping that the DA’s office has been prosecuting cases more frequently, juveniles are starting to be held accountable, and we’re doing a better job overall,” said Michael Glasser, president of the Police Association of New Orleans.
“If these trends continue maybe we have something going on in New Orleans that others can implement,” said Dr. Ashraf Esmail, a Dillard University criminologist.
CRIME TRACKER
The New Orleans Police Department continues to operate with staffing levels below 900 officers, well under the department’s recommended strength of 1,500-1,600 officers.
“You never want to be operating at a deficit and we are. Just think what we could do if we had the 15 -1,600 officers we should have,” said Glasser. “If we want to get better and it can be we’re going to need more personnel to do that.”
Experts also highlight the role of youth intervention programs and enhanced electronic monitoring.
A new law set to take effect on Jan. 1 aims to hold electronic monitoring companies accountable for better supervision of offenders out on bond.
“From now on, offenders aren’t running around on ankle monitors unhinged and not being supervised,” said Jill Dennis, vice president of the Association of Supervised Ankle Monitoring Providers.
Anti-crime activists hope that the eventual lifting of the consent decree will help lead to further crime reductions.
“We’re extremely excited about the year coming up and if we get into that sustainment period, it will free up the administrative burden and give us more time for crime-fighting,” said Glasser.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick issued a statement crediting the department’s officers and community partners for their role in the crime reduction.
“The progress we’re seeing today is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the men and women of NOPD. Our commitment to intentional strategies and a holistic approach to crime reduction has been instrumental. With the support of our local, state, federal, and community partners, we’ve made strides in creating a safer city. People are safer today than they were yesterday, but we know our work isn’t done. In recent news, it has been reported that New Orleans has seen a second consecutive year of reduction in violent crime. This positive trend is a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement officials, community leaders, and residents who have come together to make their city safer.
According to statistics released by the New Orleans Police Department, violent crime in the city has decreased by 10% compared to the previous year. This includes decreases in homicides, robberies, and aggravated assaults. This is a significant achievement considering the challenges that the city has faced in recent years.
The efforts to reduce violent crime in New Orleans have included increased police presence in high-crime areas, community outreach programs, and partnerships with local organizations. These strategies have proven to be effective in addressing the root causes of crime and improving public safety.
While this news is certainly encouraging, there is still work to be done to further reduce crime in New Orleans. It is important for all members of the community to continue working together to create a safe and thriving city for all residents.
Overall, this achievement is a step in the right direction for New Orleans and serves as a reminder that with dedication and collaboration, positive change is possible. Let’s continue to build on this momentum and make our city a safer place for everyone.
What caused the building to crumble is still under investigation, but it’s just the latest in a string of building emergencies.
Back in September, a blighted building on Oretha Castle Haley collapsed. In October, the building next door to the guitar shop went up in flames. Then two weeks ago, a partial building collapse in the CBD cut of pedestrian access on O’Keefe avenue for days.
Now City Council President Helena Moreno and State Senator Royce Duplessis says they’re trying to find a way to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
“What I’m interested in is what we can do in the future to prevent situations like this,” City Council President Helena Moreno said. “and whether we need to take a look at some of our older buildings and do a structural analysis to figure out the condition of our buildings,” Moreno said.
The City released a statement saying they’re “Working to collaborate with the New Orleans City Council to develop legislation on regular inspections for vacant historical structures and businesses.”
The owner of the building told WWL Louisiana he just bought the building a few months ago and had plans to renovate it. Now, instead of hiring renovation crews, he’s hiring demolition crews.

Fog possible to round our 2024 in your New Orleans weather forecast
Fog could affect both mornings on Monday and New Year’s Eve

AT LEAST WE’VE ALL STILL GOT ROSY DISPOSITIONS. WDSU FIRST WARNING WEATHER IMPACT DAY AGAIN KICKING IN BECAUSE WE’VE GOT FOG POTENTIAL. NOT A LOT OF IT SHOWN HERE, BUT I WILL SHOW YOU WHERE THE FOG IS ALREADY GOING TO BE A CONCERN. THERE’S THE DENSE FOG ADVISORY IN THE NORTH SHORE. IT’S ALREADY IN PLACE, BUT I’VE ALSO SEEN SOME AREAS OF REDUCED VISIBILITY THAT ARE TO THE SOUTH SHORE, SPECIFICALLY THE ATCHAFALAYA BAYOU PARISHES AND HAMMOND IN HOUMA. MORE. IT’S HOUMA AT ONE MILE PER HOUR. VISIBILITY. HAMMOND IS DOWN TO TWO AND A HALF. WE’RE STARTING TO FIND THE FOG FORMING HERE IN THE NORTH SHORE, BUT I THINK ADDITIONS WILL BE MADE TO THE SOUTH SHORE HERE TO JUST WHETHER IT’S GOING TO BE TO THE BAYOU PARISHES OR WHETHER ALL THE SOUTH SHORE. BUT EVERYBODY SHOULD GIVE IT SOME EXTRA TIME TOMORROW MORNING IF YOU GOT TO BE OUT AND GOING, IF YOU HAVEN’T TAKEN OFF THE WEEK AND THROUGH THE NEW YEAR. TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW WE’RE INTO THE 40S. WE’RE IN SOME 50S WHERE THE DEW POINT STAND WHEN THOSE TEMPERATURES MEET. WELL, THAT MEANS WE TAKE THAT INVISIBLE WATER OUT OF THERE. WE MAKE A CLOUD, AND THAT’S A CLOUD ON THE GROUND. THAT’S THE FOG POTENTIAL. SO THAT’S WHAT WE’RE DOING TONIGHT. CLEAR SKIES, ALLOWING THOSE TEMPERATURES TO COOL TO THE DEW POINT. AND THAT’S WHAT WE CALL OUR RADIATION FOG. IT’S JUST GETTING RID OF THE RADIATION OF THE HEAT IS WHAT THAT MEANS. WE’RE IN A KIND OF PRETTY NICE DAY TOMORROW. ON MONDAY, A WEAK FRONT. NEW YEAR’S EVE ON TUESDAY, MAYBE A SPRINKLE, BUT NEW YEAR’S EVE TO NEW YEAR’S DAY, WE’RE GOING TO DROP ANOTHER ROUND OF CHILL. AND THAT’S THE SUGAR BOWL FORECAST. AND I’VE GOT IT FOR YOU BEFORE WE GET THERE. STILL, THIS FORECAST DATA FOR THE VISIBILITY REALLY SHOWS A MORE WIDESPREAD CHANCE FOR DENSE FOG. THAT’S WHY I DO THINK ADDITIONS COULD BE MADE TO THIS LATER ON TONIGHT. SO DON’T BE SURPRISED IF THAT’S THE DEAL. METEOROLOGIST RAVEN RICHARDS HERE TOMORROW MORNING. I DO BELIEVE HERE IN THE DENSE FOG ADVISORY JUST FOR THE NORTH SHORE. BUT IT COULD CHANGE HERE. LATE NIGHT HOURS. TEMPERATURES CHILLY TO GET UP IF YOU GOT TO BE UP THAT KIND OF SUNRISE TIME PERIOD THAT WE MAY NOT SEE MUCH OF. LIGHT BREEZE TEMPERATURES 40S TO AROUND 50. DID YOU SEE THAT CLOUD CAST? RIGHT? THERE WERE SOME BITS THAT LOOKED LIKE RAIN. THAT’S A SIGNAL FOR SOME FOG. I THINK WE GET RID OF THE FOG. IF IT’S THERE TOMORROW MORNING, WE GET PLENTY OF SUN AND IT’S PRETTY NICE. WE ARE WELL ABOVE A TYPICAL TEMP OF 63 FOR THE TIME OF THE YEAR. WE’RE ABOUT TEN DEGREES ABOVE IT, SO I STILL CALL THAT A MILD DAY. NEW YEAR’S EVE MORNING MAY BE THE WEAK FRONT AND A SLIM CHANCE OF A SPRINKLE RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR. CLEAR SKIES IN DIFFERENT FROM THE DAY WHERE IT’S STILL AROUND 70 FOR THE HIGH, BUT QUICKLY AFTER SUNSET, TEMPERATURES WILL START TO DROP, SO RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, YOU’RE GOING TO NEED SOME JACKETS TO KEEP YOU WARM. SOME SWEATERS FOR SURE. 50 DEGREE TEMPERATURES DROPPING OFF 54 AT MIDNIGHT. WE GO INTO NEW YEAR’S DAY. PLENTY OF SUN, BUT IT’S BREEZY AND A TOP TEMP OF ONLY 60, SO THAT’S GOING TO BE A CHILLY DAY. MEANS MOST OF IT’S SPENT IN THE 50S. SO 42 WAKE UP IN THE MORNING, 50S THROUGHOUT THE DAY YOU ADD IN A BREEZE IF YOU’RE IN THE IF YOU’RE IN THAT SHADE, IT’S GOING TO BE A BIT OF A CHILL SUGAR BOWL HERE. NOTRE DAME, GEORGIA 50S TO TAILGATE, BREEZY AND CHILLY WITH KICKOFF. THAT’S PRETTY LATE. AND THEN A COLD NIGHT COMING OUT OF THE GAME. IF YOU’VE GOT THOSE PLANS OR IF YOU’RE TAKING PLACE WITH IT TO LATER IN THE WEEK HERE THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY, THERE’S A SLIM CHANCE MAYBE WE GET A SPRINKLE OUT OF A WEAK SYSTEM HERE. THAT FRONT DOESN’T MAKE ITS WAY THROUGH, BUT THE FORECAST DATA COMING IN A MORE SHOWING. THE WEEKEND HAS A LIKELIER CHANCE OF SOME SHOWERS. THEN AFTER THE WEEKEND, THE LIKELIEST CHANCE OF STORMS WITH THAT FRONT THAT COMES THROUGH. THIS IS A TYPICAL FOG SETUP FOR THE TIME OF YEAR. WHAT WE’VE JUST KIND OF GONE THROUGH. SO I HAVE ADDED IN FOG TO THE FORECAST FOR NEXT SUNDAY AT LEAST. BUT THEN THE LIKELIER CHANCE OF STORMS, AND I DON’T THINK THIS IS GOING TO BE A ROUND OF STRONG, POTENTIALLY SEVERE STORMS. THAT SYSTEM GOES FAR ENOUGH NORTH. THE ENERGY AND ANYTHING WE NEED TO LOOK AT THERE DON’T THINK WE’VE GOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. SO THAT’S GOOD NEWS. BUT THE WDSU FIRST WARNING WEATHER SEVEN DAY DOES HAVE THE IMPACT FOR THE FOG POTENTIAL. TOMORROW. MORE OF THAT POSSIBLE NEW YEAR’S EVE MORNING. SO LOOK OUT THERE. TOO CHILLY AS WE RING IN T
