  • It’s all first-time nominees for the Best Director Oscar — for the first time in 27 years

All five Academy Award nominees for Best Director on Thursday — Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Sean Baker for Anora, Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance — are first-timers in the category.

The last time the Best Directors list was all first-timers was 1998, when James Cameron (Titanic), Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty), Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting), Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential), Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter), Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line), and Peter Weir (The Truman Show) were honored. That was the year that Cameron went on to personally win three Oscars, for Best Picture and Best Editing in addition to directing as part of Titanic’s massive 11-victory haul.

    More from GoldDerby

Fargeat joined an exclusive club on Thursday, becoming just the ninth woman to be nominated in the Best Director category. The other eight were Lina Wertmüller (Seven Beauties, 1977), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, 2004)), Jane Campion (The Piano, 1993, and The Power of the Dog, 2022), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, 2010), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, 2018), Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, 2021), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman, 2021), and Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall, 2024). Of those, Bigelow, Zhao, and Campion (in ’22) went on to win the Oscar.

Corbet won the Golden Globe for Best Director early this month. He is nominated for both the DGA Award and BAFTA in addition to the Oscar, as are Audiard, Baker, and Berger.

    SEE 2025 Oscars calendar update

The Substance – for which Fargeat received her directorial nomination – is a body horror film starring Demi Moore as a fading movie star named Elisabeth Sparkle who uses a black market drug to create a younger version of herself and become relevant again – with unexpected side effects. Fargeat wrote and produced as well as directed the project, which also features Margaret Qualley as Sue, a younger version of Elisabeth, and Dennis Quaid as Harvey, an uber-masculine TV exec.

Berger, who was snubbed in the directorial category two years ago for All Quiet on the Western Front, was snubbed again this time as well for Conclave. He told Gold Derby in an interview in December, “You never know. You sit on the set and you keep shooting, and constantly you ask yourself, ‘Is this going to be interesting? Are audiences going to respond to this? Am I doing everything right? What am I forgetting? What am I doing wrong? And so there’s no recipe, and you never know how it’ll come out, and how audiences will feel. You make might make the greatest movie, and no one will go see it. It’s such a crap shoot.” Clearly, receiving nominations is a crapshoot as well.

The last 10 winners in the category since 2015 were as follows, in order:

    • Alejandro G. Iñárritu for Birdman

    • Iñárritu for The Revenant

    • Damien Chazelle for La La Land

    • Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water

    • Alfonso Cuarón for Roma

    • Bong Joon-ho for Parasite

    • Chloé Zhao for Nomadland

    • Jane Campion for The Power of the Dog

    • Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere All at Once

    • Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer

Motion Picture Academy members will vote for the winners between Feb. 11 and Feb. 18, and the results will then be tallied by the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers. The winners in all 23 categories will be revealed during a ceremony on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Conan O’Brien will host the Oscars, which will be telecast on ABC, the ABC app, and abc.com, along with several streaming services.

  • Now I Understand Why Kieran Culkin Is The Best Supporting Actor Oscar Frontrunner

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for A Real Pain.

After seeing Culkin’s standout performance in A Real Pain, his current frontrunner status for the 2025 Best Supporting Actor Oscar makes a lot of sense. Despite his supporting role, Culkin leads the cast of A Real Pain alongside Will Sharpe (The White Lotus), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Kurt Egyiawan (The Agency), and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), who also wrote and directed the film. After his win at the 2025 Golden Globes, Kieran Culkin has emerged as the frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actor race at the 2025 Oscars.

Now that A Real Pain is streaming on Hulu, it’s easy to understand for viewers just watching it for the first time why Culkin is the frontrunner for the Supporting Actor Oscar based on his performance. The 2025 Golden Globe results provide a strong indication of how several 2025 Oscars races will shape up, including Culkin’s surprise win over Denzel Washington for Best Supporting Actor. Culkin, who won an Emmy and a previous Golden Globe for his role in the HBO drama series Succession, has never been nominated for an Academy Award at the time of writing.

Kieran Culkin Gives An Incredible Performance In A Real Pain

Culkin offers an unparalleled signature performance as Benji

Benji (Kieran Culkin) smiling in the airport in A Real Pain

While A Real Pain is very much Jesse Eisenberg’s movie as its writer, director, and lead actor, Kieran Culkin steals the show with his emotionally moving performance. Like many other great actors, Culkin has a signature style, which some may even call a shtick, that involves a rapid-fire wit with a fiery sensitivity, which can often inspire explosive reactions and decisions in his characters. His Emmy-winning performance as Roman Roy in Succession carries a similar frantic and unpredictable energy, somehow making blatant dysfunction and bluntness charming.

Golden Globes 2025: 8 Biggest Snubs & Surprises

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 5, 2025, had several major surprises and a few clear snubs.

Just a few weeks ago, the 2025 Best Supporting Actor Oscar was thought to be Denzel Washington’s to lose. While Washington was arguably the highlight of Gladiator II, which also featured an impressive action epic debut from Paul Mescal, Cullkin now has an edge on him after his Golden Globes win. Without Culkin as the sentimental yet problematic Benji there to foil Eisenberg’s strict and neurotic David, the film may not have been so well-received. Culkin was perfectly cast in A Real Pain and for that reason deserves the Oscar.

After Watching A Real Pain, I Agree Kieran Culkin Deserves The Best Supporting Actor Oscar

Culkin is the only one of the projected nominees whose performance feels irreplaceable

Culkin’s performance is so strong and integral to his respective film that he truly deserves the Oscar in 2025. Washington was the standout of Gladiator II and should make it a tight race, while Guy Pearce of The Brutalist could make a push in the coming weeks, as well as Edward Norton for his transformative performance as “America’s tuning fork” Pete Seeger from A Complete Unknown. Dark horses Jeremy Strong of The Apprentice and Yura Borisov of Anora are still well within the conversation. Culkin, however, is arguably the only projected Supporting Actor nominee who feels irreplaceable in his film, which is why he should win for A Real Pain.

After watching Kieran Culkin’s incredible performance in “Succession,” I finally understand why he is the best supporting actor Oscar frontrunner. Culkin’s portrayal of Roman Roy, the arrogant and witty son of media mogul Logan Roy, is nothing short of mesmerizing. From his sharp one-liners to his vulnerable moments, Culkin brings depth and complexity to his character in a way that is truly remarkable.

Culkin’s ability to seamlessly navigate between comedy and drama is a testament to his incredible talent as an actor. He brings a level of nuance and subtlety to his performance that elevates every scene he is in. Whether he is engaging in a power struggle with his siblings or grappling with his own insecurities, Culkin’s performance is always captivating and compelling.

In a show filled with standout performances, Culkin shines as a scene-stealer who consistently delivers memorable moments. His chemistry with the rest of the cast is palpable, and his dynamic with his on-screen family adds another layer of complexity to the show.

As the awards season approaches, it is clear that Culkin is a strong contender for the best supporting actor Oscar. His performance in “Succession” is truly deserving of recognition, and I can’t wait to see him take home the award. Kieran Culkin is undoubtedly a talent to watch, and his portrayal of Roman Roy solidifies his status as a frontrunner in the race for the best supporting actor Oscar.

  • FINAL 2025 Oscar Nomination Predictions: SUPPORTING ACTOR

Kieran Culkin is in 64.88% of A Real Pain.

To put that in context, his co-star and the film’s writer and director Jesse Eisenberg, is in 69.77% of the film yet he is the ‘lead.’ Even then, whenever Culkin is offscreen, the majority of conversation with Eisenberg is about Culkin, so he’s never really gone. While much of the conversation around category fraud and screen time has focused on Zoe Saldaña and Ariana Grande-Butera (see Supporting Actress for more), Culkin’s onscreen percentage is a full 25 points higher, making his the most egregious of the season.

Who doesn’t want to see another Roy brothers showdown between Culkin and Jeremy Strong? The Succession duo went head-to-head for the final season of the HBO show where Culkin triumphed over the eldest boy (Strong won for season one) and it looks like we’re about to have another duel. Granted, this time Culkin is so far out ahead in this race that Strong isn’t even a factor, much less actual competition for him despite playing one of film and television greatest 20th century villains in Roy Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice.

Yura Borisov became the real breakout star of Anora this season, being able to bypass his three male co-stars in Sean Baker’s screwball comedy-romance to become arguably the second strongest Supporting Actor contender of the year, with the same quad of precursors – plus Gotham – that Culkin has. Guy Pearce missed SAG but his run for The Brutalist with other precursors is strong and he’s actually second behind Culkin (albeit a distant second) in terms of critics’ wins.

Triple Oscar nominee Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) has everything save a Gotham nod. He hasn’t been nominated in 10 years (his last was in this category for Birdman) but as the season has played out he looks to be the only likely returning nominee for this category because…

If you had told me at the beginning of the year that two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington, one of the most-nominated actors in Academy history, would not only not be the frontrunner to win for his villainous turn in Gladiator II, I probably would have laughed. I probably did (apologies to anyone I straight up goofed on for doing so). But here we are. Not only is Washington miles away from winning, he’s not even getting in. Now, is there a sliver of a chance he could? Of course. In a category that is an absolute drought for previous nominees (much less previous winners), Washington’s failed to connect with voters outside of the Golden Globes and Critics Choice, namely SAG. BAFTA wasn’t really in earshot as he’s never been nominated there, but since SAG’s inception in 1994, he’s never gotten an Oscar nomination without a SAG nod first. The film itself hasn’t proven itself much of a contender either, probably scraping a few tech nods as Ridley Scott’s Napoleon did last year.

I’m going pretty BAFTA strong here with not only all five of my predicted nominees hitting the British precursor but now that they have six spots, it’s giving us the spare and my sixth spot is also a BAFTA nominee, Sing Sing‘s Clarence Maclin. The back and forth strength and weakness of Sing Sing outside of lead actor Colman Domingo makes predicting his chances exponentially more difficult (missing PGA was tough). That said, I think Maclin is close and barring a big surprise on nomination morning like Stanley Tucci getting in, which would really be a power move for Conclave, he could break into the top five unless Jonathan Bailey’s SAG nomination wasn’t a fluke and he skims the surface. But I say, why invite stress in?

Here are my final 2025 Oscar predictions in Supporting Actor.

  • ‘Emilia Pérez’ Audience Reviews Plummet Ahead Of Oscar Nominations

    Topline

Audience reviews for “Emilia Pérez,” the divisive Spanish-language musical Oscar contender, are tanking on both Rotten Tomatoes and Letterboxd, following weeks of controversy for the film that has drawn scrutiny for its portrayal of Mexico and transgender people—but yet has not stopped its awards season dominance.

    Key Facts

Despite a decent 76% critics score, “Emilia Pérez” has a dismal 34% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which has sharply dropped in recent weeks as the Academy Award nominations approach Thursday.

Just three weeks ago, “Emilia Pérez” had a much higher audience score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Internet Archive screenshots, and an even higher 75% score last month.

Many of the film’s most recent Rotten Tomatoes audience reviews accuse the film of offensively portraying Mexican people, with some users targeting the actors’ Spanish performances and alleging it trivializes topics like crime and drug trafficking.

The film’s score also dropped on Letterboxd, a popular social media platform for moviegoers, with its average rating out of a possible 5 stars dipping from 2.9 to 2.6 between Jan. 6 and Jan. 22, according to Internet Archive screenshots.

Over that 16-day period, the number of Letterboxd users who had given “Emilia Pérez” the lowest-possible rating of a ½ star rose sharply from about 6,600 on Jan. 6 to 27,400 by Jan. 22.

Why Is “emilia Pérez” So Controversial In Mexico?

Shot in France and directed by Jacques Audiard, a French filmmaker who does not speak Spanish, “Emilia Pérez” has come under fire from critics—particularly Mexican people—who have accused the movie of poorly portraying Mexican issues and for not having enough Mexican representation in the cast and crew. Some have said the film, which follows a Mexican drug cartel leader who fakes their death and undergoes a gender transition to become a woman named Emilia Pérez, who then starts a nonprofit to help identify bodies of people killed by drug cartels, trivializes the issue of drug cartel violence. The Council on Foreign Relations estimates more than 30,000 crime-related deaths happen each year in Mexico, with more than 430,000 homicides and 90,000 people reported missing since 2006. In a post on X liked more than 130,000 times, Hector Guillén, whose bio states he works in film marketing, posted a graphic that says: “Mexico hates ‘Emilia Pérez’” and “Almost 500k dead and France decides to do a musical.” Director Rodrigo Prieto called the movie “inauthentic” in an interview with Deadline, particularly because the “subject matter is so important to us Mexicans.” “Why not hire a Mexican production designer, costume designer, or at least some consultants?” Prieto said. Prieto praised Adriana Paz, the only main cast member who is from Mexico. Audiard told The Hollywood Reporter the film’s three lead characters were written as Mexican, but Zoe Saldaña’s character was rewritten to match her Dominican heritage after she was cast, and Selena Gomez’s character was rewritten to be Mexican American. Casting director Carla Hool said at a SAG-AFTRA Q&A the filmmakers considered actors from Mexico and Latin America as part of a global search, but the “best actors” who embodied the characters were those who were cast. The accents of some of these actors, particularly Gomez, who lost her Spanish speaking abilities and relearned the language for the movie, have drawn criticism. Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez slammed Gomez’s accent as “indefensible” in a conversation with podcast host Gaby Meza, who said Gomez’s lack of fluency in the language “can’t give her acting any nuance.” Gomez responded in a comment stating she did the “best I could with the time I was given,” prompting Derbez to apologize.

What Other Controversies Has “emilia Pérez” Faced?

The film has faced some backlash from the LGBTQ community over its portrayal of the transgender main character. Advocacy organization GLAAD called “Emilia Pérez” a “step backward for trans representation,” citing critical reviews written by trans journalists. PinkNews journalist Amelia Hansford criticizes the movie for portraying the titular character’s gender transition as a moral decision to absolve her of her past sins. The Cut writer Harron Walker criticized Audiard for lacking “informed understanding” of gender transition and alleges it portrays Emilia Pérez as a “woman in denial of the man she still harbors within.” The film, as well as “The Brutalist,” also sparked controversy for using artificial intelligence technology to alter certain dialogue, particularly to change the vocal range of actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the titular character.

How Have The Cast And Crew Responded To Controversy?

Audiard apologized to Mexican critics last week. “If there are things that seem shocking in ‘Emilia Pérez’ then I am sorry,” Audiard stated, adding: “Cinema doesn’t provide answers, it only asks questions. But maybe the questions in ‘Emilia Pérez’ are incorrect.” Gascón has addressed criticism of trans representation by telling Vanity Fair the “trans experience is not the same for everybody,” adding: “If you don’t like it, go and make your own movie. Go create the representation you want to see for your community.”

    Do Critics Like “emilia Pérez”?

Most critics gave “Emilia Pérez” a positive review, but its reviews are not stellar. It has a 76% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, which lags far behind many other films thought to be Oscar contenders. “Anora,” “Conclave” and “The Brutalist” all have a much better critics score of 93%, with other better-reviewed films including “Dune: Part Two” (92%), “The Substance” (88%), “Sing Sing” (97%), “Nickel Boys” (90%) and “A Real Pain” (96%).

Is “emilia Pérez” A Serious Awards Contender?

“Emilia Pérez” is considered one of the biggest Oscar contenders. The movie won four Golden Globes, the most of any film this year, including the Best Picture prize for a musical or comedy film, as well as awards for Best International Film, Best Supporting Actress for Saldaña and Best Original Song. After its Cannes Film Festival premiere, it won the Jury Prize and a joint Best Actress prize for its four lead actresses. Several publications have projected “Emilia Pérez” to receive the most Oscar nominations this year, including The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter.

When Are The Oscar Nominations Revealed?

The Academy will announce nominations Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. EST in a live announcement on its social media channels and website. Actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott will read the nominations. The Oscars will air March 2 at 7 p.m. EST on ABC and Hulu, with Conan O’Brien tapped to host.

Film-maker Jacques Audiard apologises after Mexican outrage over Emilia Pérez (The Guardian)

The anticipation for the Oscar nominations is heating up, and one actress whose chances seem to be dwindling is Emilia Pérez. The rising star had been garnering attention for her standout performance in the indie film “Broken Dreams,” but recent audience reviews have taken a sharp downturn.

Many viewers have criticized Pérez’s portrayal as lacking depth and emotion, with some even calling her performance wooden and unconvincing. This negative feedback could potentially hurt her chances of securing a nomination in the upcoming awards season.

Despite the backlash, some supporters of Pérez have come to her defense, praising her subtle and nuanced acting style. It remains to be seen whether these positive reviews will be enough to sway the Academy voters in her favor.

As the countdown to the Oscar nominations continues, all eyes will be on Emilia Pérez to see if she can turn the tide and secure a spot among the nominees. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Demi Moore Caps a Career Comeback With an Oscar Nomination

Moore first made her name with ’80s Brat Pack fare like “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and was nominated for a Globe in 1991, for the blockbuster romance “Ghost.” Hits like “Indecent Proposal” and “Striptease,” which gave her what was then a record $12.5 million paycheck, along with her marriage to fellow star Bruce Willis, made her a Hollywood phenomenon in the ’90s.

But the perception of her as merely a commercial performer, symbolized by the producer’s comment, “corroded me over time,” she said at the Globes. She had thought perhaps she was done with acting, but what she called “the magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script” for “The Substance” pulled her back in.

The brashly bloody “The Substance,” from the French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, was an unlikely Oscar contender; academy voters don’t tend to go for gore. But this year was an exception: The movie is in the running for best picture, while Fargeat also scored nominations for best director and screenplay.

“The Substance” follows Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle, once an A-list star and now the host of a TV fitness show, as the industry summarily rejects her, simply for aging. Enter the mysterious potion of the title, which allows Elisabeth to birth a younger, more nubile version of herself (Margaret Qualley). Grotesqueries abound, both metaphorical and fleshy.

Fargeat aimed for an extreme, almost comical level of gross-out, and a critique of beauty standards. “‘The Substance’ is very much about what, as a woman, we have to conform to and how it impacts our life socially,” she said, before the film won the prize for best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival last year.

And Moore’s performance seemed to nod to her own image, and her past, as an object of lust, both fetishized and scolded for her form. (See especially: the furor over her naked and pregnant 1991 Vanity Fair cover, shot by Annie Leibovitz.)

She wrote in her best-selling 2019 memoir, “Inside Out,” of how twisted her sense of self was, and how for years she suffered from disordered eating, and overexercised. “I was putting all of my value of who I was into how my body was, how it looked, and giving other people’s opinion more power than myself,” she said in an interview last year.

It was one reason that “The Substance” so resonated with her, as she explained from the Globes stage. “In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough, or skinny enough or successful enough, or basically just not enough. I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know, you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’”
