Where to watch the 10 Oscar-nominated movies for best picture

As luck would have it, this year’s crop of best picture Oscar nominees – ten movies, to be exact – are largely available for viewing from the comfort of your own home.
So, while the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chases down the required “paperwork” to determine which producers should actually be nominated for trophies for many of the films, behold a list of where and how you can enjoy each title, below:
This film from “Florida Project” director Sean Baker feels like the “Pretty Woman” for this century – and it even includes a bold mention of Cinderella, like that film does. “Anora” is nominated for six Academy Awards in total, and is now playing in theaters. Alternatively, it can be purchased for streaming on Prime Video or Apple TV.
A three-and-a-half hour opus, “The Brutalist” stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones as Hungarian refugees who come to the US after WWII – and also involves architecture. “The Brutalist” is playing in theaters, with an intermission, and is not yet available to stream online.
Covering Bob Dylan’s influential decision to “go electric” at a popular music festival in 1965, “A Complete Unknown” features show-stopping (and Oscar-nominated) performances from Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro. The movie is playing in select theaters. You can catch Chalamet at home this weekend, however, when he hosts “Saturday Night Live.”
Going behind closed doors to reveal the process of electing a new pope, this quietly intense film earned eight Oscar nominations, including best actor for Ralph Fiennes and best supporting actress for Isabella Rossellini. “Conclave” is available to stream on Peacock.
Denis Villeneuve’s continuation of his epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s landmark science fiction novel, “Dune” was recognized by the Academy with nominations for best picture, production design, visual effects and cinematography. It is now available to stream on Netflix and Max, as well as Hulu and Prime Video.
This hybrid musical/crime drama may be the one to beat this year, as it earned a whopping 13 nominations on Thursday. The movie, about a drug lord seeking gender reassignment surgery, stars Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña – both nominated for their roles – along with Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz. “Emilia Pérez” is available to stream on Netflix.
Based on a true story, “I’m Still Here” follows a mother of five who is forced to reinvent herself amid escalating violence under Brazilian dictatorship in the 1970s. The film is also nominated for best international feature, and best lead actress for Fernanda Torres. “I’m Still Here” is playing in select theaters. It will later be available to stream on Apple TV+.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, the film chronicles the harrowing journey of two young Black men as they navigate a tough reform school together in Florida. “Nickel Boys” is playing in theaters now.
Marking a major accomplishment for genre films getting recognized in the best picture category, Coralie Fargeat’s engrossing body horror fable ruminates on aging and features an incredible (and Oscar-nominated) turn from star Demi Moore. “The Substance” is streaming on Prime Video with a premium subscription. It is also available for purchase on Apple TV.
Pulling in an impressive 10 Oscar nods this week, “Wicked” has become a movie phenomenon to match the hype of the Broadway smash upon which it’s based. “Wicked” is still playing in some theaters and is available to purchase on Prime Video and Apple TV.

Karla Sofia Gascon is the first Oscar-nominated trans actress
Karla Sofía Gascón just made history.
On Thursday, the breakthrough star earned an Academy Award nomination for best actress for the Spanish-language movie musical “Emilia Pérez,” becoming the first openly trans actress to receive an Oscar nod. She was nominated in the category alongside Demi Moore (‘The Substance”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) and Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”).
Over the last half century, many cisgender actors have been nominated at the Oscars for portraying trans characters, including Jared Leto (“The Dallas Buyers Club”), Jaye Davidson (“The Crying Game”), John Lithgow (“The World According to Garp”), Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”) and Felicity Huffman (“Transamerica”). Elliot Page, too, was nominated for best actress for the 2007 pregnancy comedy “Juno,” before announcing he is transgender in 2020.

But Gascón, 52, is the first instance of an openly trans actor earning Oscar recognition for a character who is also trans. In “Emilia Pérez,” she plays a Mexican drug kingpin who undergoes gender-affirming surgery and starts a new life as a social worker. The film co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz, all of whom shared the best actress prize at Cannes Film Festival in France last spring.

Who is Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón?
Born in Madrid, Gascón moved from Spain to Mexico in 2009, where she appeared in telenovelas such as “Hasta el fin del mundo” and “Llena de amor.” With the support of her wife and now-teenage daughter, she began her transition in 2018, and was cast in “Emilia Pérez” in 2022.
The movie has been heavily scrutinized by critics and social media users, drawing comparisons to everything from “Mrs. Doubtfire” to the much-maligned Oscar best picture winner “Crash.” Gascón has also encountered ignorance on the awards campaign trail these last few months.
“The other day, this woman came up to me and was telling me how wonderful my work was,” she told USA TODAY in November. “Then she asked me, ‘If you get nominated, will you be nominated for best actress or best actor?’ And I told her, ‘Ma’am, I am an actress! If I played a monster or an old dog, I would still be nominated as an actress!’ ”
But with her visibility throughout awards season, the outspoken actress hopes to educate people about what it means to be trans.
“All I can do is focus on planting the seed by doing my work and showing that I am no different than anybody else,” Gascón says. “I just want to live my life without anybody bothering me – everyone deserves to be themselves.”
How many Oscar nominations did ‘Emilia Pérez’ receive?
“Emilia” led the 2025 Oscar nominations with 13, including best picture, best director (Jacques Audiard), best supporting actress (Saldaña) and best adapted screenplay. Saldaña’s incendiary production number, “El Mal,” was recognized in best original song, as was Gomez’s self-love anthem “Mi Camino.” Gomez, notably, was snubbed for best supporting actress, despite earning nominations from the Golden Globes and British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

“Emilia” led the winners at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, taking home four prizes for best supporting actress (Saldaña), best original song (“El Mal”), best non-English language motion picture, and best comedy/musical. Accepting the latter, Gascón gave an emotional speech on behalf of the film’s cast and crew.
“I chose these colors tonight – the Buddhist colors – because I have a message I have for you,” said Gascón, wearing an orange-yellow gown and tearing up. “The light always wins over darkness. You can put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul or our resistance or our identity. I want to say to you, raise your voice and say that I won, I am who I am, not who you want.”
Why is ‘Emilia Pérez’ controversial?
With its continued awards acclaim, “Emilia” is widely considered a best picture front-runner going into the Oscar ceremony on March 2. But the film has been criticized for its lack of Mexican representation in the leading cast and crew: Audiard is French; the movie was shot entirely in Paris on a soundstage; and of the film’s four main actresses, Paz is the only one born in Mexico.
The movie has also received backlash for its sanitized depiction of the Mexican drug war, as well as its trans representation. Amelia Hansford, a trans critic for LGBTQ+ news site PinkNews, called the film “satirical,” “disingenuous” and “harmful.”
“It tries to use the idea of transitioning to convey that through her transition, Emilia is trying to repent for the sins she committed in her time as cartel boss,” Hansford wrote in her review. “The issue with this is that transition isn’t a moral decision, and the act of transitioning alone doesn’t somehow absolve you of your past self.”

Charles Shyer, Oscar-Nominated Classic Comedy Director, Dies At Age 83
After a historic career that led to numerous box office successes and an Oscar nomination, Private Benjamin‘s director and writer Charles Shyer has reportedly passed away. The creator worked on over a dozen films throughout his decades-long career. He achieved prominence with Private Benjamin, where he helped to turn Nancy Meyers into a box office star in her debut film. The two often worked together on Shyer’s other renowned projects, including The Parent Trap (1998), Father of the Bride (1991), and Irreconcilable Differences (1984).
According to a report by Deadline, Shyer has passed away at 83 years old on Friday, December 27. The cause of death has not been released, and it is not expected that it will be made public. It is not known if the acclaimed director was working on any projects. If so, none have have been announced. He is survived by four children, who have shared their pain and grief. His family offered a solemn quote after his passing:
It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father, Charles Shyer’s passing. His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind. The Director And Writer Created Many Classic Hits
Shyer’s career was defined by classic comedies that relied on strong writing, talented actors, and compelling romances. Romantic comedies quickly became his defining genre. After all, Baby Boom (1987), Father of the Bride (1991), and The Parent Trap (1998) all leaned on believable relationships as their connecting tissues. Shyer always had a strong understanding of how to balance the heavier moments in a relationship with the humor that made the movies stand out. Even Shyer’s The Noel Diary (2022), his last movie as a director, proved that he was more than capable of directing modern romantic comedies.
Shyer earned a nomination for Academy Award for Best Writing for Private Benjamin.
Still, he did not always work on romance. The Affair of the Necklace (2001), Once Upon a Crime (1992), and his debut work, Smokey and the Bandit (1977), all proved that he was more than capable of diving into other genres. Action, drama, and mystery were never beyond him. While he earned his Oscar nomination for Private Benjamin, even that focused far more heavily on Judy Benjamin’s independence, rather than just her ever-shifting romantic prospects.

A Hollywood legacy is not always a guarantee for a writer or director. Many produce only a single movie and are not especially remembered for their contributions. Shyer, however, made his name in the comedy niche. He left his mark on Hollywood and helped to create a lasting project that became a serious success in the Father of the Bride franchise. Tragically, if Father of the Bride 3 is ever produced, Shyer won’t be able to take part in the production. Still, Charles Shyer left his mark on Hollywood and will remain remembered for his immense talent and work.

Charles Shyer Dead: Oscar-Nominated Writer-Director Was 83
Oscar-nominated screenwriter, director and producer Charles Shyer, whose films include Private Benjamin, Baby Boom and the 1991 remake of Father of the Bride and its 1995 sequel, died Friday. No cause of death was given. He was 83.
The Meyers-Shyer family shared this statement with Deadline: “It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father, Charles Shyer’s passing. His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind. We honor the extraordinary life he led and know there will never be another quite like him.”

Shyer’s Oscar nomination, as well as a WGA Award win, came for the original screenplay for 1980’s comedy hit Private Benjamin starring Goldie Hawn, which he co-wrote with Nancy Meyers and Harvey Miller. His next few projects would see him teamed with Meyers, not only professionally but also personally as they married in 1990 and would go on to co-write Irreconcilable Differences starring Ryan O’Neal, Shelley Long and Drew Barrymore; Baby Boom starring Diane Keaton; Father of the Bride I and II with Steve Martin and Keaton; and 1994’s I Love Trouble starring Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts.
All of those latter films were directed by Shyer as the couple would become one of the most prolific teamings for comedy in the business until their divorce in 1999, shortly after writing and producing the 1998 remake of Disney’s The Parent Trap, which featured a young Lindsay Lohan in the role of twins trying to bring their parents back together. Meyers took the directing reins on that one.

After their divorce in 1999, Shyer would set off on his own, directing and producing the 2001 period piece The Affair of the Necklace starring Hilary Swank, and the 2004 remake of Alfie with Jude Law in the title role of the film, written, directed and produced by Shyer. His most recent credits include writing and directing the 2022 Netflix film The Noel Diary and serving as co-writer and producer of the 2023 holiday film Best Christmas Ever!
Earlier writing credits include 1977’s Smokey And The Bandit, 1978’s House Calls (which earned him a Best Original Screenplay WGA nomination) and Goin’ South, which starred Jack Nicholson. He also shared story by credit with Meyers and Miller on the 1984 Hawn vehicle Protocol, which had a screenplay credited to Buck Henry.
A Los Angeles native, Shyer was practically born into the business as the son of Lois Delaney and Melville Shyer, a production executive and film director who worked with D.W. Griffith and was one of the founders of the Directors Guild of America. After going to UCLA, Shyer won a DGA apprenticeship but soon segued into writing after becoming an assistant to Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson, who were producing the TV series The Odd Couple, later becoming head writer and associate producer.
Survivors are four children including filmmaker Hallie Meyers-Shyer.
