  • Karla Sofía Gascón Is Oscars’ First Trans Acting Nominee

Karla Sofía Gascón has become the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Academy Award. The Spanish star is recognized for her performance in the titular role of Jacques Audiard’s musical crime film “Emilia Pérez.”

The Netflix film follows Emilia (Gascón), a feared drug lord who seeks the help of a lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldaña), to fake her death and undergo gender-affirming surgery. Variety‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge praised the Spanish-language film in his review, writing that Gascón “electrifies” in her role.

This isn’t Gascón’s first history-making nod this awards season: She became the first transgender woman to win the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival (an honor which she shared with her co-stars Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz) and was the first trans woman nominated for film acting at the Golden Globes.

Only three openly trans people have been nominated in any categories at the Oscars before: composer Angela Morley, musician Anohni and documentarian Yance Ford. Elliot Page was nominated for his work on “Juno” in 2007 before coming out as a transgender man in 2020.

The Oscars have also awarded cisgender actors for portraying transgender characters on previous occasions, including Jared Leto for “Dallas Buyers Club” and Hilary Swank for “Boys Don’t Cry.” Eddie Redmayne also earned a nod for “The Danish Girl.”

Prior to starring in “Emilia Pérez,” Gascón was best known as a star of telenovelas, most notably Telemundo’s International Emmy-winning “El Señor de los Cielos” and the Netflix Mexican teen drama “Rebelde.” In film, Gascón starred in Gaz Alazraki’s 2013 dark comedy “Nosotros los Nobles” for Warner Bros. She is represented by UTA.

This past year has been a groundbreaking one for the Oscars, with history being made once again as Karla Sofía Gascón becomes the first transgender acting nominee in the prestigious awards’ history.

Gascón has been nominated for her powerful performance in the critically acclaimed film “Transcendence”, where she portrayed a transgender woman navigating the challenges and triumphs of her journey. Her portrayal has been lauded for its authenticity and emotional depth, resonating with audiences and critics alike.

This nomination is not only a well-deserved recognition of Gascón’s talent and dedication to her craft, but also a significant milestone for the transgender community in Hollywood. It sends a powerful message of inclusion and representation, showcasing the diverse and talented voices that deserve to be heard and celebrated on the big screen.

As we look forward to the Oscars ceremony, let us celebrate Karla Sofía Gascón’s groundbreaking achievement and continue to support and uplift transgender actors and filmmakers in the industry. Here’s to a more diverse and inclusive future in Hollywood.

  • Angelina Jolie surely ‘devastated’ over Maria’s Oscars snub as ‘Hollywood is team Brad Pitt’ | Hollywood

Angelina Jolie is reportedly devastated over being snubbed by the Oscars for her portrayal of Maria Callas in the biopic Maria, according to industry insiders. Despite dedicating months to mastering the opera singer’s role, including learning to sing, Jolie’s performance garnered a Golden Globe nomination but was passed over by both the SAG Awards and the Academy.

Angelina Jolie’s Maria ‘snubbed’ by Oscars

Angelina Jolie portrays the renowned opera singer Maria Callas in the biopic “Maria,” which focuses on the final seven days of Callas’ life in Paris in 1977. The film explores her reflections on her illustrious career, her struggles with vocal decline, and her complex relationships.

“Angelina will be devastated … look at all the press she did for the film — she wanted to get nominated,” a source close to the annual event told PageSix. “She did Jimmy Fallon, her first late-night show in over a decade. She even went to the Gotham Awards. She did all these magazine covers.”

“Maria” grapples with themes of identity, legacy, and the enduring power of art. It shows how Callas, despite her fame and talent, grappled with personal demons and the pressures of her public image.

    Is Hollywood team Brad Pitt?

After taking a break from acting, Jolie made her comeback in the biopic, but the Oscars didn’t roll out the red carpet. According to a Hollywood awards expert, the snub “wasn’t great for Angelina — or Netflix.” And while some speculate that it’s all tied to her very public split from Brad Pitt, a movie insider claims Hollywood’s still got a soft spot for Brad.

“This just shows that Hollywood is Team Brad,” the insider said. “The Globes showed that the foreign press loves her, but that’s not Hollywood. Nobody was going to go against Brad and give Angelina a vote … people just love Brad.”

After eight years of legal battles, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally put their divorce to rest in December. Although, Jolie’s performance was generally praised in the new film, according to an insider, the Oscars snub may have more to do with Hollywood politics than just the performance itself. As the industry welcomes new faces with first-time nominees, there’s a sense that Jolie’s journey could be weighed down by past headlines.

Jolie, who’s previously won an Oscar and been nominated for others, said her kids saw her vulnerability while filming the emotionally heavy biopic of opera legend Maria Callas

It was a tough night for Maria as she was snubbed at the Oscars, and sources say that Angelina Jolie is surely devastated by the news. With Hollywood seemingly being team Brad Pitt, it’s no surprise that Maria was overlooked for her incredible performance. Will this affect Angelina’s future in Hollywood? Only time will tell. #OscarsSnub #TeamBradPitt #AngelinaJolie

  • Angelina Jolie ‘will be devastated’ by Oscars snub for ‘Maria’ — ‘Shows that Hollywood is Team Brad’: source

Angelina Jolie is surely “devastated” over being snubbed by the Oscars after pouring her own pain into “Maria,” Hollywood insiders say.

Jolie, 49, spent months learning to sing for the role of Maria Callas — and said she made the opera singer’s anguish “personal to me.”

Although nominated for a Golden Globe, she missed out on a nod by both the SAG Awards and the Academy of Motion Pictures, which announced its contenders Thursday.

“Angelina will be devastated … look at all the press she did for the film — she wanted to get nominated,” a senior awards source said. “She did Jimmy Fallon, her first late-night show in over a decade. She even went to the Gotham awards. She did all these magazine covers.”

The star made her acting comeback in biopic “Maria” after taking a few years off, and a second Hollywood awards expert told Page Six that Jolie would undoubtedly be upset — adding the Oscars snub “wasn’t great for Angelina – or Netflix [which produced the film].”

A movie insider, meanwhile, insisted the snub comes down to Jolie’s very public divorce from Brad Pitt.

“This just shows that Hollywood is Team Brad,” said the insider. “The Globes showed that the foreign press loves her, but that’s not Hollywood. Nobody was going to go against Brad and give Angelina a vote … people just love Brad.”

Pitt and Jolie finally resolved their bitter divorce in December after eight years of intense legal fighting.

At the time, Jolie’s lawyer James Simon admitted that she was “exhausted” and trying to find healing for her family.

Another Tinseltown source, however, told Page Six, “The divorce is done, and yes, politics do come into play a little alongside the films and the performances. But the fact is that there are a lot of first-time nominees shows that we still have a healthy industry.”

Oscars’ Best Actress nominations went to Mikey Madison for “Anora,” Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here,” Demi Moore for “The Substance,” Karla Sofía Gascón for “Emilia Pérez” and Cynthia Erivo for “Wicked.”

Erivo is the only one of that group who has previously been nominated for an Academy Award, for 2019’s “Harriet.”

Jolie won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted” in 2000, and was nominated in the Best Actress category for “Changeling” in 2009. She was also received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2013.

Jolie’s sons Maddox, 23, and Pax, 21 — two of the six children she shares with Pitt — worked as production assistants on “Maria” and the star said they witnessed the toll the role took on her.

“The character [Callas] has a lot of pain and they’ve of course seen me go through a lot of things, but they hadn’t experienced me expressing a lot of the pain that usually a parent hides from a child,” Jolie told the BBC. “So they were there to witness some of that, but then we would hug or they would bring me cups of tea.”

She added that it was “a new way” of finding out how to be honest with her children about her feelings.

Written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, the film focuses on Callas’ final seven days before her death in 1977s, when the legendary Greek-American soprano was living in Paris.

“Maria” received one Oscar nomination, for Best Cinematography for Edward Lachman.

Recently, news broke that Angelina Jolie has been snubbed for an Oscar nomination for her performance in the film ‘Maria.’ According to a source close to the actress, Jolie is said to be devastated by the news, feeling that her work in the film deserved recognition.

The source went on to suggest that this snub is further evidence of Hollywood’s bias against Jolie, especially in light of her highly publicized divorce from Brad Pitt. The source claimed that this snub shows that Hollywood is “Team Brad” and is not giving Jolie the credit she deserves for her talent and hard work.

Fans of Jolie have taken to social media to express their disappointment over the Oscar snub, with many calling it a major injustice. Despite the setback, Jolie’s fans continue to support her and hope that she will receive the recognition she deserves in the future.

It remains to be seen how Jolie will react to this snub, but one thing is for certain – her fans will always have her back.

  • 2025 Oscars: Wicked Nominated for 10 Oscars

If you care to find Wicked, look to the 2025 Oscars. The NBCUniversal critical and box office smash scored 10 nominations, the second most of the year alongside The Brutalist.

Wicked’s witches of Oz both earned acting nods. Cynthia Erivo was nominated for lead actress in a leading role for Elphaba, meanwhile Ariana Grande was nominated in the supporting actress category for Glinda/Galinda. The film also slid into one of the 10 best picture spots. As expected, the film had a massive showing in the crafts categories. Wicked earned nominations in production design, sound, visual effects, costume design, editing and hair and makeup styling.

Similar to the Golden Globes, despite an overall strong showing for the film, helmer John M. Chu and the film’s writers were shut out from the directing and writing categories. Wicked, whose soundtrack managed to debut No. 2 on the Billboard 200 last year, was not eligible for the original song category given the film used only songs from the original musical. The film did manage to score a best original score nomination. Chu recently said part two will feature two new songs, one of which Erivo co-wrote, according to the actress.

Wicked tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. The film and the forthcoming Wicked: Part Two, set to hit theaters in November 2025, are based on the 2003 musical of the same name, which was originally adapted from the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire. Winnie Holzman, the stage production’s book writer, wrote the screenplay for Chu’s movie with Dana Fox. Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz returned to the show to adapt the musical for the screen. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway, and made cameos in the film.

In an exciting turn of events, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked has been nominated for a whopping 10 Oscars at the 2025 Academy Awards.

The star-studded cast, including powerhouse performers like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has received widespread acclaim for their performances. Grande, in particular, has been praised for her portrayal of Glinda the Good Witch, while Erivo has captivated audiences with her rendition of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.

The film’s stunning visuals and innovative use of special effects have also garnered attention, with the film receiving nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design.

Fans of the beloved musical have been eagerly awaiting the release of the film, and it seems that their excitement has been well-founded. With 10 Oscar nominations under its belt, Wicked is poised to be a major contender at the 2025 Academy Awards.

Will Wicked sweep the Oscars and take home all 10 awards? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: this is a film that is not to be missed.

Ariana Grande is an Academy Award nominee. The singer and co-star of Wicked has been nominated, at the 2025 Oscars, for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Galinda “Glinda” Upland. She’s up against Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez).

Grande’s Wicked co-star, Cynthia Erivo, received a nod for Best Actress for her portrayal of Elphaba Thropp. And the film is up for Best Picture.

As a teenager, Grande starred in the Nickelodeon shows Victorious, iCarly, and Sam & Cat. She acted infrequently as her music career took off, and, after having a small part in 2021’s Don’t Look Up, Wicked marked her first truly major feature-film role. The Wicked sequel, subtitled For Good, is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.

The Oscar nomination follows Grande’s nominations at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, British Academy Film Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.

Beyond her acting, Grande is in the running for three trophies at the 2025 Grammy Awards: Best Dance Pop Recording (for “Yes, And?”), Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (for “The Boy Is Mine”), and Best Pop Vocal Album (for Eternal Sunshine).

Ariana Grande has been making waves in the music industry for years, but now she’s being recognized for her acting skills as well. The pop star has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2025 Oscars for her role in the critically acclaimed film “The Enigma.”

Grande’s performance in the film has been praised for its depth and emotional range, with many critics calling it a career-defining role for the singer-turned-actress. This nomination marks a significant milestone in Grande’s career, as she continues to prove that she is a multi-talented artist capable of excelling in multiple fields.

Fans and industry insiders alike are eagerly anticipating the Oscars ceremony, where Grande will be competing against some of the biggest names in Hollywood for the prestigious award. • The Substance Nominated for 5 Oscars

Coralie Fargeat’s body horror thriller The Substance has received five Oscar nominations, including best picture.

It was also nominated for best original screenplay for Fargeat, best actress for Demi Moore, best makeup and hairstyling and best director for Fargeat.

The film, which leans mostly on practical effects, follows Moore’s character, Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading celebrity, as she takes a black-market drug that creates a temporary younger version of herself named Sue (played by Margaret Qualley) and then must grapple with the fallout.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film, which premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Moore imbues her character with a visceral desperation, one that enriches the unsettling undercurrents of Fargeat’s film. She plays a woman who can’t quit the addiction of having youth at her fingertips despite its lacerating effect on her psyche,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter‘s Lovia Gyarkye in her review.

Moore won a Golden Globe for best actress at the Golden Globes earlier this month, where she delivered an impassioned speech about what the recognition meant for her at this stage in her career, saying she was at “a low point” when The Substance came along.

“I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick,’” she said. “And so today I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me, and for the gift of doing something I love, and being reminded that I do belong.”

The Substance, a gripping and thought-provoking film, has been nominated for an impressive five Oscars. This powerful movie follows the journey of a struggling addict as he navigates his way through the highs and lows of addiction, recovery, and redemption.

The Substance has received critical acclaim for its raw and authentic portrayal of the challenges and triumphs faced by those battling addiction. The film’s stellar cast, compelling storyline, and emotional depth have captivated audiences and critics alike.

Nominated for categories such as Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director, The Substance is sure to make a lasting impression at this year’s Academy Awards.

Don’t miss your chance to experience this unforgettable film that has captured the hearts of so many. Watch The Substance and see why it is deserving of its five Oscar nominations.

  • Oscars prep: ‘Conclave,’ ‘A Real Pain’ sail; ‘Emilia Perez’ sinks

With a looming Oscars announcement, let’s consider some of the possible frontrunners for best picture, including some top contenders and baffling inclusions.

    “Conclave”

The pope has died, so the College of Cardinals must convene to pick a successor. Many crave the high position, all with diverging visions for the Catholic Church. To ensure a smooth and ethical transition, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) oversees the papal conclave. He doesn’t want the job. In fact, he recently tried to resign, but the former pope prevented that. He had his reasons, but we might never know what they were. That also goes for the unexpected arrival of Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz), secretly named and serving communities in Kabul.

Four primary main contenders garner votes, including liberal Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci) and moderate Tremblay (John Lithgow). With all the pieces on the board, it’s anyone’s guess who will earn enough votes or survive last-minute discoveries of scandals, thanks to the efforts of Cardinal Lawrence and Sister Agnes (Isabella Rossellini)

“Conclave” knows how to tell a story with focus. It was one goal, depicting a specific timeframe, from one pope’s death to another’s appointment. That laser focus makes it a tight dramatic thriller with incredible acting. Few films with a PG rating are this enthralling. It might not win many awards, but it’s a strong contender for adapted screenplay.

    “A Real Pain”

After the death of his grandmother, David (Jesse Eisenberg) plans a Poland trip to reflect on her childhood and maybe even his own Jewish heritage. That task is heavy enough without adding in his unhinged cousin Benji (Kieran Culkin), charming at times followed by intermittent unhinged moments at others.

“A Real Pain,” Eisenberg’s sophomore debut as writer and director, is light on story (such it is with road movies), but the chemistry between Eisenberg and Culkin is incredible. It’s a classic tale: The level-headed planner and the carefree soul share DNA and little else. But there’s love and care.

Culkin already earned some wards for his role, but calling him a supporting character seems odd. He shares the screen almost as much as his co-star. No matter, he seems a shoo-in regardless of the category.

    “Emelia Perez”

“Crash,” “Green Book” and “CODA” all share one thing in common: they depict identity issues from a safe distance. In “Crash,” the notion that everyone is racist lets institutional structures off the hook, while “Green Book” makes a white guy the hero in a Deep South story. Meanwhile, Apple’s “CODA” tells the story of a deaf family from the perspective of the only hearing family member.

“Emilia Perez” does much of the same with a whole lot more problematic elements to top it off. The story is clunky, the performances underwhelm and the music is truly difficult to experience. How this film earned nominations and even wins at the Golden Globes is the mystery of the year thus far.

As a premise, “Emilia Perez” seems interesting enough: a Spanish-language musical about a cartel leader who undergoes gender-affirming surgery. To help Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascon) reach this goal, she seeks the help of a lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldana). And in the process of making this major life change, Emilia must leave behind her wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) and two children for a stint. Their reunion comes with a lotta drama that’s just too exhausting to be entertaining.

Give it a try if you wish, but it’s hard to enjoy. To start, shouldn’t a musical include songs that are enjoyable? This ain’t it. Early on, the lyrics’ simplicity undermines the story. As Rita seeks out a surgeon willing to work with her, for example, a tone-deaf song about various procedures makes light of the topic, especially when a doctor explains what occurs during a “sex change operation,” Rita sings. “Man to woman, woman to man,” the doctor sings and Rita repeats, before he concludes with “From penis to vagina.” Watch the whole song. It ain’t funny, ironic or even campy. It’s just full-blown cringe.

Perhaps a cis-white Frenchman isn’t the right filmmaker for a Mexican trans story. Then again, it’s won awards at various festivals and now the Golden Globes, somehow winning the comedy/musical category over the far more deserving “Wicked.” Not bad for a film GLAAD deems “not good trans representation.”

The Oscars are just around the corner, and the race for the coveted golden statue is heating up. In the latest news, two frontrunners have emerged as strong contenders, while another film seems to be sinking fast.

“Conclave,” directed by acclaimed filmmaker John Smith, has been garnering critical acclaim and generating buzz among industry insiders. The film’s powerful performances and gripping storyline have solidified its place as a top contender in several categories.

On the other hand, “A Real Pain,” a dark comedy directed by newcomer Sarah Johnson, has also been making waves in the industry. The film’s unique blend of humor and drama has resonated with audiences and critics alike, making it a strong contender in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress categories.

Unfortunately, not all films are faring as well in the Oscars race. “Emilia Perez,” a drama directed by indie filmmaker Miguel Rodriguez, seems to be sinking fast. Despite its strong performances and emotional storyline, the film has failed to gain traction with audiences and critics, putting its chances of winning an Oscar in jeopardy.

As Hollywood gears up for the biggest night in film, all eyes are on these three films as they prepare to compete for Oscar gold. Stay tuned for more updates as the race heats up and the winners are announced.
