  • Live updates: Washington Capitals vs Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre

The end of the Washington Capitals’ season-long road trip is night. Tonight, the Capitals will take on the Ottawa Senators north of the border, looking to win four of five during their difficult stretch away from home.

The last time the Capitals played Ottawa, two weeks ago, Alex Ovechkin scored the only goal in overtime to give the Capitals a thrilling 1-0 win. Tonight, the goalies that sat out that night, Charlie Lindgren and Antom Forsberg, will suit up and oppose each other.

The Capitals-Senators game is airing on Monumental Sports Network 2. Joe Beninati and Alan May will have the call. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm. Craig Laughlin is out due to a medical leave of absence. #LockerStrong.

    1st Period

    Puck is dropped.

Capitals take a bench minor at 2:12 for too many men. Alex Ovechkin is serving the penalty.

Capitals take another bench minor at 3:50 for too many men. Yikes.

Aliaksei Protas stopped on a breakaway shorthanded.

Caps kill both early power plays for the Senators.

The Senators have 9 of the first 11 shots on goal in the first half of the period.

Caps third line authors the team’s best shift of the night. Lars Eller flings a shot on net and then Ethen Frank and Taylor Raddysh nearly deposit the puck past Forsberg from just outside the crease.

At intermission: These two teams just are struggling to score on each other at five-on-five. That’s the fourth consecutive 20-minute period neither team has been able to score a goal on each other. The Senators are outshooting the Capitals 11 to 7. The two teams are tied 10 to 10 at five-on-five.

    2nd Period

    Puck is dropped.

David Perron to the box for hooking at 0:39 of the period. The Caps get their first power play of the game.

Connor McMichael attempts to score on a wraparound or “power spin” as Alan May described it, but couldn’t stuff the puck past Forsberg.

Taylor Raddysh to the box for high-sticking at 3:45 of the period.

    1-0 Ottawa Senators. OTT PPG: Ridley Greig (8). Assists: D. Perron (1), T. Chabot (19). Time: 04:08.

Perron sends a centering pass across the crease that goes off Greig’s skates and in.

Greig now goes to the box at 5:35 for hooking Tom Wilson on an odd-man break.

    1-1 tie. WSH Goal: Connor McMichael (18). Assists: P. Dubois (30), M. Roy (10). Time: 07:43

McMichael’s goalless streak ends at 11 games. After a Caps PP ends, the Senators stopped covering him down low and he beats Forsberg to the top corner.

Matthew Highmore to the box for tripping Jakob Chychrun along the corner boards at 12:53.

    2-1 Ottawa Senators. OTT Goal: Brady Tkacuk (20). Assists: T. Hamonic (4), T. Kleven (3). Time: 14:53.

Tkachuk buries a rebound after a Hamonic point shot. The Capitals are challenging for goaltender interference. Drake Batherson appeared to make some minimal contact with Lindgren as he made the save on Hamonic’s point shot.

NO GOAL. The call on the ice is overturned.

Travis Hamonic hooks Aliaksei Protas at 17:24.

Josh Norris awarded a penalty shot after John Carlson wipes him out on a breakaway.

2-1 Ottawa Senators. OTT SHG (Penalty Shot): Josh Norris (18). Unassisted. Time: 17:37.

    3-1 Ottawa Senators. OTT SHG: Shane Pinto (10). Assists: J. Norris (11), J. Sanderson (26). Time: 18:15.

At intermission: Two shorties in 38 seconds have Ottawa up 3-1. Ottawa is outshooting Washington 25 to 20, but the Capitals are out-attempting them 26 to 24 at five-on-five.

    3rd Period

    Waiting for puck drop.

  • Caps Finish Trip in Ottawa

Jan. 30 vs. Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Center

    Time: 7:00 p.m.

    TV: MNMT

Radio: 106.7 THE FAN, Caps Radio 24/7

The Capitals reach the end of their five-game road trip and the conclusion of their 14-game January slate on Thursday night in Ottawa when they face the Senators for the second of three times this season. The first meeting between the two nation’s capital cities occurred here in Ottawa two weeks ago when Washington eked out a 1-0 overtime victory on the strength of a second consecutive Logan Thompson shutout (24 saves) and Alex Ovechkin’s game-winning overtime goal, the 27th of his NHL career.

As they return to the Eastern Time Zone for the first time in over a week for Thursday’s trip finale, the Caps carry a 3-1-0 record for the trip to date. Their lone misstep on the journey was a 2-1 setback to the Canucks in Vancouver on Saturday night, a loss that ended a six-game winning streak, the team’s longest of the season. Washington is 9-1-3 in January, and its total of 21 points this month matches the output of its best previous month of the season to date; the Caps also rolled up 21 points in November (10-4-1).

Most recently, the Caps earned a 3-1 victory over the Flames in Calgary on Tuesday. Thompson won his 11th consecutive start in that game, winning in his hometown of Calgary with a 32-save outing that lifted his record to 23-2-3 on the season. Thompson has permitted two or fewer goals against in 19 of his last 23 starts, dating back to Nov. 2.

Tuesday’s win over the Flames in Calgary was also satisfying for Washington winger Andrew Mangiapane, who played the first seven seasons and 417 games of his NHL in a Flames uniform.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Mangiapane after the victory. “Obviously, I know a lot of guys on that team and I think half of them were maybe at my wedding, so there are good relationships there. It’s definitely nice to get the two points, and I’m really impressed by the way our team battled tonight and really dug deep; the power play, the [penalty kill], everything was huge for us, and it’s a really great feeling to come away with two points.”

Calgary made the night special with a stirring video tribute of Mangiapane’s many exploits in a Calgary sweater, shown on the Scotiabank Saddledome video board at the first television timeout of the first period.

“It was awesome, it was a great video tribute,” says Mangiapane. “It was great to watch all those plays, goals and everything like that. I had a lot of great memories here, scored a lot of big goals and just watching a great fan base and crowd that always had my back here, and every time I stepped out on the ice, they wanted nothing but the best for me.

“I’m happy to be back, and happy to be coming away with two points. But it was a good video tribute that I’ll remember forever.”

For just the sixth time in their history, Washington has strung together eight straight games in which it has surrendered two or fewer goals against. The franchise record is nine consecutive games, achieved just once, and the achievement was ongoing at this time 27 years ago.

From Jan. 9-31, 1998 – the month after they moved from suburban Landover, Md. to downtown DC – the Caps went nine straight games without permitting as many as three goals against in any of them. They went 6-1-2 in those nine games in 1997-98. This year’s model is 7-1-0 through eight games.

The Caps are the NHL’s stingiest defensive squad, allowing an average of 2.34 goals against per game. Washington has permitted just 11 goals against in its last 10 games, and it has yielded only five goals against at 5-on-5 in its last eight contests.

“You can see the system is working,” says Caps captain Alex Ovechkin. “Obviously our goaltending has played very solid. We are blocking the shots, and we play smart in our [defensive] zone.”

When Washington last visited here two weeks ago, the Senators entered the game just a point shy of eighth place and the final Stanley Cup playoff berth in the Eastern Conference standings. Including their overtime loss to the Capitals that night, the Sens are 4-2-1 since, and that has been enough to lift them from ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings to sixth.

Ottawa has also moved ahead of both Tampa Bay and Boston and into third place in the Atlantic Division standings as it seeks its first postseason berth since 2017, when it fell to Pittsburgh in double overtime of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final series. The Sens’ current points percentage of .560 is the team’s highest in any season since that last playoff appearance following the 2016-17 season, in which the Sens finished with 98 points, a .598 points percentage.

The Sens have been parked in idle since last Sunday when they earned a 3-1 victory over the visiting Utah Hockey Club here. Ottawa is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games, and it is 4-0-1 in its last five home games, with the overtime loss to Washington on Jan. 16 the lone blemish on their home record over that span.

The Sens have won each of the first two games of their four-game homestand that concludes on Saturday when Minnesota pays a visit.

The Washington Capitals wrapped up their road trip with a 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators. The Caps showed their dominance on both ends of the ice, with strong performances from goaltender Ilya Samsonov and goals from key players like Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie.

The win in Ottawa caps off a successful road trip for the Capitals, who have now won four of their last five games. The team looks poised for a strong finish to the regular season and a deep playoff run.

Stay tuned for more updates and highlights as the Capitals continue their quest for the Stanley Cup! #ALLCAPS

  • Jeremy Swayman sits out against Ottawa with upper body injury

Michael DiPietro served as Korpisalo’s backup. DiPietro was summoned from AHL Providence in the afternoon and was in Boston Black and Gold for the first time since joining the franchise.

DiPietro, 25, originally a Canucks draft pick (third round, No. 64 overall in 2017), was swapped here in October 2022 when the Bruins sent highly-touted prospect Jack Studnicka to the Canucks.

A stocky 6-feet and 211 pounds, DiPietro this season in Providence has played his way into the franchise’s No. 3 netminder spot, ahead of Brandon Bussi.

Prior to getting called up on Thursday, DiPietro was 14-5-3 with the WannaBs, with a 1.95 goals-against average and .930 save percentage. His GAA ranked second in the league and his save percentage fourth.

Studnicka, a forward who some thought one day could emerge as a Bruins team captain, was flipped to San Jose just over a year after his arrival in Vancouver. He signed as a free agent with the Kings this past summer and has spent the season at AHL Ontario (Calif.), some 40 miles east of the devastating fires around Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Trent Frederic was back in the Bruins lineup after missing back-to-back games due to illness.

The rest of the walking wounded remained hors de combat, including top defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm, and winger Cole Koepke. Sacco said he was unable to offer a timeline as to when any of them would return.

    Power-play struggles resurface

The long-comatose Bruins power play, slightly shaken from its slumber of late, was blanked again (0-for-3) in Wednesday’s thumping against the Devils.

The bagel was made all the worse by the fact the Devils potted three goals (on seven chances) with their man-advantage. It was the seventh time this season the Bruins surrendered three power-play goals to the opposition.

Prior to the stop at the Rock, the Bruins had scored four times on the advantage in their previous four games. That fairly humble haul stood as the best they have performed over a four-game stretch all season.

In their 100-plus years of chasing rubber around a rink, the Bruins only twice have been burned more than seven times for three power-play goals (or more) in a single season.

In 2006-07, opponents connected for three or more in eight games, totaling 27 PPGs in those games. It also happened in eight games in 1985-86, with the Bruins surrendering 26 PPGs.

Scoring the first goal of the game typically has been a harbinger of good things for the Bruins (and for most NHL teams). Entering Wednesday night’s game in Newark, they were a robust 15-4-3 (.750) this season when scoring the 1-0 goal, which made Morgan Geekie’s one-timer for the lead in the first period against the Devils look encouraging.

All the good, good, good vibrations disappeared when the Devils pounded Swayman with 17 shots in the second and rolled up a 4-1 lead.

It was the second time this season that Geekie scored the game’s opening goal, tying him with Elias Lindholm, Brad Marchand, and Charlie Coyle with a pair of 1-0 party-starters.

Topping the list of game-opening goals: Justin Brazeau (5) and Koepke (3).

Avs’ Makar as steady as ever

Cale Makar, the stellar former UMass Amherst backliner, will make his only visit to the Garden Saturday with the Avs in town for a 1 p.m. matinee.

Makar played two seasons with the Minutemen (2017-19) before transitioning seamlessly into the NHL, winning the Calder Trophy (Rookie of the Year) in 2020 and then both the Norris (top defenseman) and Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) in ‘22.

In his four-plus NHL seasons on the Colorado backline, Makar, 26, has been the league’s most prolific defenseman, with a career line of 102-287-389 as of Thursday morning. Next in line: Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes (381 points) and Nashville’s Roman Josi (372).

Makar again this season tops all defensemen in point production (16-37–53 prior to Thursday night’s games).

Following the visit by the Avs, the Bruins won’t play again until their stop in Buffalo Tuesday night. The Jets make their only visit this year to the Garden on Thursday prior to the revitalized Rangers coming to town for a Saturday matinee.

Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman will be sidelined for the team’s upcoming game against the Ottawa Senators due to an upper body injury. Swayman, who has been a standout performer for the Bruins this season, will be replaced by backup goalie Linus Ullmark in the starting lineup.

Swayman has been a key player for the Bruins this season, posting a 16-7-3 record with a 2.11 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. His absence will be felt by the team, but Ullmark has proven to be a reliable option in net as well.

The Bruins will look to secure a win against the Senators without Swayman in the lineup, as they continue to push for a playoff spot in the competitive Eastern Conference. Fans will be eagerly awaiting Swayman’s return to the ice and hoping for a speedy recovery from his injury.

  • Ottawa Senators at Boston Bruins odds, picks and predictions

The Ottawa Senators (24-19-4) visit the Boston Bruins (23-20-6) Thursday. Puck drop from TD Garden is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Senators vs. Bruins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

    Season series: Senators lead 2-0

The Senators snapped a 2-game win streak Tuesday with a 5-0 loss at the New York Rangers, failing to cover as +110 underdogs with the Under (5.5) cashing. It marks the fourth time in the last 10 games that Ottawa has been shut out.

Boston has dropped 2 of its last 3 after falling 5-1 at New Jersey Wednesday. The Bruins, who were outshot 35-23, were +190 underdogs as the Over (5.5) hit midway in the third period. C Morgan Geekie scored the first goal of the game — in the opening frame — but New Jersey scored 4 times in the second and once in the third to run away with it.

    • Moneyline (ML): Senators -160 (bet $160 to win $100) | Bruins +135 (bet $100 to win $135)
    • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Senators -1.5 (+154) | Bruins +1.5 (-190)
    • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

    Senators at Bruins projected goalies

    Leevi Merilainen (6-3-1, 2.32 GAA, .914 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Jeremy Swayman (15-16-4, 3.00 GAA, .896 SV%, 2 SO)

Merilainen has been in net 6 of the Senators’ last 7 games with usual starter Linus Ulmark dealing with a back injury. Merilainen is 4-2 with a 2.17 GAA and a .920 SV% (160 saves against 174 shots) in that span. The Finn rookie will be looking to rebound from Tuesday’s 5-0 loss at MSG. He did allow 5 goals to the Bruins against 28 shots Saturday but managed to stop all 3 shootout attempts in a Senators 6-5 victory — Ottawa was a -136 home favorite and the Over (5.5) hit early in the second period.

There is a question on who will start in goal for the Bruins. Starter Jeremy Swayman was pulled after the second period in Wednesday’s loss after allowing 4 goals  — 2 on power plays — on 28 shots. “He was dealing with something minor, so we thought it be best the way the game was going was to get him out (of) there after the second period,” coach Joe Sacco said postgame. If the Anchorage native doesn’t start, look for backup Joonas Korpisalo (8-4-2, 2.88 GAA, .891 SV%, 2 SO) to tend the pipes.

  • Gamethread 01/19/2025: New Jersey Devils vs. Ottawa Senators

Today concludes a rare weekend back-to-back set where both games are afternoon affairs. Also, welcome Ottawa to the Rock for the first time this season.

    The Time: 1:00 PM ET

The Broadcast: TV: MSGSN, NHL Network; Audio: Devils Hockey Radio

The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils vs. the Ottawa Senators

The Song of the Evening: Josh Scogin has continued his musical work with ‘68. The garage-ish chaotic rock continues to, well, rock. The evidence for that is evident in songs like “Removed Their Hooks,” which comes from the album Yes, and…

The Rules: The rules remain as they are even with the Devils hosting Ottawa in the second straight afternoon game of the weekend. Please keep your language clean (this means no swearing, don’t mask it, it’s not enough, no I don’t care what Tom Fitzgerald said), respect your fellow Devils fan with no personal attacks (play nice or you will not play here), no illegal streams (this means no asking, no hints, no nothing about it), and please keep your comments relevant to this game. Go Devils!

Welcome to tonight’s Gamethread between the New Jersey Devils and the Ottawa Senators! Both teams are looking to secure a crucial win as they battle it out on the ice.

The Devils are coming off a tough loss in their last game and will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance tonight. With key players like Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier leading the way, they have the talent to come out on top.

On the other side, the Senators are hungry for a win after a string of losses. With young stars like Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk leading the charge, they will be looking to make a statement on home ice.

It’s sure to be an exciting matchup between these two teams, so grab your snacks, settle in, and join the conversation as we cheer on our favorite players. Let’s go Devils/Senators! #NJDvsOTT #NHL #HockeyTwitter

  • Ottawa Senators vs New Jersey Devils Prediction, Odds and Picks

The Ottawa Senators posted a surprising 6-5 victory in a shootout on Saturday, as rookie Leevi Merilainen finally showed some signs of being a rookie on Saturday. For Sunday’s game, they’ll turn to veteran Anton Forsberg. The Over cashed in Saturday’s shootout, snapping a seven-game run to the Under. The total has also gone low at a rather impressive 15-2-4 clip across the past 21 outings. The Senators offense has struggled to score goals on a regular basis, going for 2.9 goals per game to rank 21st in the NHL, although the power play does cash in at a 23.6 percent clip, good for 10th. The defense is so-so, allowing goals at a 2.8 GPG clip, good for 12th in the league.

For the Devils, they were tripped up 3-1 at home against the Philadelphia Flyers, as they took care of backup Jake Allen. He wasn’t bad, as he allowed just two goals, but received next to no offensive support. All the Devils could muster was an early goal from Dougie Hamilton. The good news is that Jacob Markstrom will be back between the pipes on Sunday. The total has gone low in six of the past seven starts for Markstrom, while going 18-3 across the past 21 games for the Devils dating all the way back to Dec. 2. While the Over is 4-1 in the past five meetings, the Under hit in the only battle this season. New Jersey won 3-1 on Oct. 17 in Canada’s capital city. Let’s go low, and feel confident in doing so.

Senators vs Devils prediction: Under 5.5 (+100) at time of publishing. Playable to -115.

The Ottawa Senators will face off against the New Jersey Devils in an exciting matchup on Thursday night. Both teams are looking to secure a much-needed win, but who will come out on top?

The Ottawa Senators have struggled this season, currently sitting near the bottom of the standings. However, they have shown flashes of potential with some impressive wins against top teams. With standout players like Brady Tkachuk and Thomas Chabot leading the way, the Senators have the ability to compete with any team in the league.

On the other hand, the New Jersey Devils have had a mediocre season so far, but they have the talent to turn things around. Players like Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier have been playing well and could be the difference-makers in this matchup.

In terms of odds, the Senators are slight underdogs in this game, but they have shown they can compete with any team on any given night. The Devils are favored to win, but the Senators could easily pull off an upset.

My prediction for this game is that it will be a close one, with both teams putting up a good fight. However, I believe the Ottawa Senators will come out on top in a hard-fought battle. My pick is the Senators to win this game.

What are your thoughts on this matchup? Do you agree with my prediction, or do you think the New Jersey Devils will secure the victory? Let me know in the comments below!

  • No downplaying it: Bruins facing a huge game in Ottawa

BOSTON — It’s been a long time since the Bruins and Senators have played a big game, but Saturday’s 3 p.m. game in Ottawa undoubtedly fits that description.

A year ago, the Red Wings and Capitals each finished the regular season with 91 points. Washington went to the playoffs and Detroit went home because the Capitals had more regular-season wins.

In 2022-23, the Panthers finished with one more point than the Penguins and Sabres to earn the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Florida, of course, then upset the top-seeded Bruins and advanced all the way to the Stanley Cup final.

Simply, in a tight playoff race, a game and or even a point, can be the difference between getting into the playoffs and not getting in for teams around the cut line.

That hasn’t been a problem for the Bruins in recent years because they’ve been closer to the Presidents’ Trophy than the lottery. But this year has been much different.

Before play began around the NHL on Friday night, the Bruins were 22-19-5 for 49 points in 46 games which put them in the second Wild Card or last playoff spot.

But that’s misleading. Boston is just a point ahead of both Ottawa and Montreal, who have 48 points in two fewer games (44 games each).

The Bruins need to beat the Senators, not only to improve their situation but to prevent Ottawa from improving.

“For us, it’s zeroing in on the games in front of us and just trying to play our game,” interim coach Joe Sacco said. “If we stick to our process, hopefully, the end result will take care of itself. … We’re in a position that we put ourselves in and it’s our job, our responsibility to keep forging ahead and make sure we’re playing and executing at a high level so we give ourselves a chance. It’s too much to look ahead.”

Bruins captain Brad Marchand said the players always know where they are in the standings, good or bad. The key is keeping them in perspective. He acknowledged that two potentially critical points were on the line on Saturday.

“They’re big points for both teams. It’s another opportunity to try to build our game. We’ve had a couple of big wins lately. There are definitely areas we can continue to improve upon. This is another opportunity to do that,” he said. “We watch standings all year. You try not to get too caught up in them. Things change daily. But we’re aware of it. … You can never forget it’s extremely hard to win in this league. You can’t get caught up thinking your place in the standings is the be-all, end-all. At the end of the day, any team in the playoffs can win, you just have to get in there.”

But be acknowledged that getting in isn’t something they can take for granted.

“But if you’re at the bottom, teams can catch you and push you out. That’s what you’re kind of worried about,” Marchand said. “Other than that it doesn’t matter what place, you just need to get to the dance. But it’s something we need to be aware of. There’s a lot of teams pushing.”

Sacco said he’s leaning toward starting Jeremy Swayman, who played one of his best two-game stretches of the season last week in wins over Florida and Tampa. It won’t be Swayman vs. Ullmark Part Deux. Ullmark is currently on injured reserve.

    Puck is dropped.

A huge save by Logan Thompson on the first shift of the game, denying Nick Cousins from just outside the crease.

Ovechkin muffs a shot on a two-on-one. He had room short side.

Tons of incredible high-danger saves by Thompson in this period.

Tom Wilson with a huge late hit on Jake Sanderson about a second after the buzzer sounds. Wilson is then tackled to the ice by the Ridly Greig. Wilson and Greig both get matching minors for roughing, but Wilson got an extra minor for unsportsmanlike conduct, which will give Ottawa a power play to start the second.

At intermission: It’s 0-0/ This is an incredible back and forth game. The Senators are playing great hockey funneling to the net. Senators have an 8 to 6 lead in shots and and 5v5 shot attempts 20 to 11. Once again, Thompson is saving the Caps’ bacon.

    2nd Period

Spencer Carbery is talking to officials after realizing Wilson got an extra minor.

Puck is dropped. The Senators’ power play begins.

Senators don’t score on the man advantage but nearly connect several times.

Nic Dowd to the box for tripping Shane Pinto at 5:20.

Thirteen minutes into the second period, the Capitals have 1 shot.

Dylan Strome to the box for running over the goalie. Senators back to the power play at 17:50.

At intermission: The game remains scoreless. The Capitals had five shots that period – one fewer than the first. Ottawa leads in shots 17 to 11 and in 5v5 shot attempts 32 to 18.

    3rd Period

    Puck is dropped.

After a scrum in the corner, Tom Wilson (drops his gloves) and Brady Tkachuk (keeps his gloves on) as they approach the bench. They both get two minutes for roughing as they just wrestled. Both teams to four-on-four.

Claude Giroux slashes Martin Fehervary at 4:19. Caps finally get their first power play.

Mangiapane robbed on the far side of the net by Merilainen on the power play.

Tkachuk screaming in frustration after Thompson robs him on a chance from the left circle.

At the end of regulation: The Senators are outshooting the Capitals 25 to 24 and in 5v5 attempts 44 to 36. Now we got to OVER. TIME.

    3rd Period

Strome, Protas, and Carlson start it off for the Caps.

    Senators win the opening faceoff.

  • Caps Visit Ottawa | Washington Capitals

Jan. 16 vs. Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre

    Time: 7:00 p.m.

    TV: MNMT

Radio: 106.7 THE FAN, Caps Radio 24/7

    Washington Capitals (29-10-5)

    Ottawa Senators (22-18-3)

The Caps make the first of two visits to Ottawa this month on Thursday night when they take on the Senators for the first of three meetings this season. Ottawa is the last Eastern Conference team the Caps are facing for the first time in 2024-25.

Washington hits the road on the heels of a 3-0 shutout win over Anaheim on Tuesday in DC. Logan Thompson stopped all 19 shots he faced in that game to earn his first shutout as a Capital and the team’s first shutout since Charlie Lindgren blanked Boston in DC on April 15 of last year, in the team’s penultimate game of the 2023-24 regular season.

Since being recalled from AHL Hershey this past Friday, right wing Ethen Frank has picked up points in each of his first three NHL games (two goals, one assist), and he has given the Caps’ lineup a nice mid-season injection of speed and energy.

In his debut against Montreal on Friday, Frank used his blazing speed to negate a certain icing call on the Caps and quickly making a play to Lars Eller for the tying goal in front, a goal that is ultimately responsible for Washington collecting a point from that contest. A night later in Nashville, Frank’s wheels and shot were on display when he scored his first NHL goal – and the eventual game-winner – to snap a 1-1 tie midway through the third period.

“You could make a strong argument that [Frank’s line] earns us points against Montreal, and then the following night in Nashville,” says Caps coach Spencer Carbery. “The only reason thatn we get three out of four points there is because of that line, and the plays that they make in that game.”

And on Tuesday against the Ducks, Frank scored a big insurance goal in the final minute of what had been a somewhat wobbly second period for the Caps. Playing on a line with Taylor Raddysh and Lars Eller, the 26-year-old native of Papillon, Neb. has made his mark in less than a week in the League.

“Big time,” says Carbery. “And you’ve just seen it on display, so I’m just really excited and almost having to curb myself a little bit [because] it’s only three games. But you start to think about what he can do over a longer stretch with his speed.

“I’ve just been really, really impressed with Ethen Frank, I’ll be honest. He’s just been so impressive in every single way. From reads – and I talked to him today – using his speed, making small, little plays. He is really, really smart with his puck decisions, and strong on the walls.

“He has a play by our bench – and I loved it; I showed it to the group this morning – where he is getting hammered, he is trying to get a puck and he dives for a loose puck and he pokes it to Brandon Duhaime. It’s just a small, little play, but it’s the extra effort, and doing everything he can to make sure the puck advances.

“I can’t say enough good things about what he is doing, and now the challenge becomes doing it consistently, and being an everyday NHLer, you’ve got to try to do it for a week, two weeks, a month, month and a half. Hopefully, I’m optimistic that he is going to be able to do that, and he’ll continue to be in the lineup if he does.”

After playing a little over 10 minutes in each of his first two games, Frank logged 12:20 worth of ice time on Tuesday against Anaheim. His linemates also saw a bump in their minutes in the Anaheim game, which is understandable because the three of them were possession beasts against the Ducks.

“I think Lars has started to play a little bit better,” says Carbery. “I’ve liked his game the last few, so that’s been nice. And Raddy was really good [Tuesday] night. [Andrew Mangiapane], we’ve found that spot on the fourth line for him, and I think that can help his game. He’s had some strong outings, scored in Nashville, and they were one of our better lines there.

“So yeah, I do think Frank being there and Lars playing a little better and Raddy there, I think that combination has been solid, and they’ve earned more opportunity. They’re playing more 5-on-5 minutes, I’m able to deploy them defensively or offensively without any hesitation, and it will probably look like that [Thursday] night [in Ottawa]. You’re not worried about them against [Brady] Tkachuk or [Tim] Stützle or whoever. They can handle those minutes with Rad and Lars playing the way they are, and Frankie as well, playing at the level he’s playing at.”

Tuesday’s win over the Ducks extended Washington’s home point streak to 11 straight games (8-0-3) and pushed its overall points streak to eight (5-0-3). The Caps are second in the NHL in goals per game (3.61), they’re fifth in goals against per game (2.52), third in penalty killing (83.6 percent) and 11th in power play efficiency.

The Caps are catching the Sens in the potential early stages of a heater. Ottawa has won three straight games, winning three games in four nights while traveling for each. The Sens have sandwiched road shutouts over Pittsburgh (5-0 on Saturday) and the Islanders (2-0 on Tuesday) around Sunday’s 3-2 win over Dallas in Ottawa.

Ottawa’s nascent hot spell followed a 1-5-1 stretch, which was preceded by a six game-winning streak that included a pair of shutouts, but also featured a trio of overtime wins. The Sens have been streaky this season, but they’re in the hunt for an Eastern Conference playoff berth. Going into Wednesday night’s typically light slate of NHL activity, Ottawa stood ninth in the Eastern Conference standings, just a single point behind Columbus for the eighth and final Stanley Cup playoff berth from the Conference.

Thursday marks Washington’s first trip to Ottawa in over a year, since suffering a 6-1 setback at the hands of the Sens here on Oct. 18, 2023, in the third game of the 2023-24 regular season and the first road game of Carbery’s tenure as the team’s head coach.

The Washington Capitals are heading to Ottawa to take on the Senators in an exciting matchup. The Caps are looking to continue their winning streak and solidify their spot in the standings. SENATORS (19-15-2) at STARS (22-13-1)

Thursday, 8 p.m. ET, American Airlines Center in Dallas.

    TV: TSN5 Radio: TSN 1200

    Odds: Ottawa +173 Dallas -217

    THE GOALIE SITUATION

Still without Linus Ullmark, whose back tightened up in a game against Edmonton on Dec. 22, the Senators had three netminders — Anton Forsberg, Mads Sogaard and Leevi Merilainen — on the ice at Wednesday’s practice in Dallas.

    Article content

Sogaard was sent back to Belleville Thursday.

Forsberg, who was injured in a pre-game warmup in mid-December, is scheduled to play Friday in St. Louis. Merilainen, who was very good in a 3-1 win in Minnesota on Dec. 29, will start against Dallas.

“It’s good to have Forsy back out on the ice, he’s getting closer,” Senators head coach Travis Green told TSN 1200’s Gord Wilson on Wednesday. “He’s been (practising) for a couple of days. You have to have depth in the goaltending position.”

    GOOD FIT FOR TKACHUK

The shift to playing alongside Ridly Greig and centre Shane Pinto has been a good one, according to Senators captain Brady Tkachuk.

Tkachuk had been with Tim Stutzle and Claude Giroux for a 4-2 loss in Winnipeg on Dec. 28, but Green decided to mix it up before the game in Minnesota. (Greig scored a goal.)

“There are so many great players on our team,” Tkachuk said. “I’ve played with Pints and Rids in the past. Two great guys, two great players. It’s been a lot of fun. We had a test last game and we passed with flying colours. We’re looking to build on that more. It says a lot about our team makeup and the group we have that anybody can play with anybody on any given night.”

    JAKE AND BAKE

The Stars were really good through the 2024 calendar year, with a record of 52-25-6 (110 points). There are lots of good players on the roster, but goaltender Jake Oettinger is a big reason for the success.

A giant of a goalie, at 6-6 and 224 pounds, the 26-year-old Oettinger had 41 wins in 2024, second only to the 43 by Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck.

So far this season, Oettinger, a first-round draft pick of the Stars in 2017, is 17-9-1 with a 2.38 goals-against average.

The Stars have allowed a league-best 91 goals, with backup goalie Casey DeSmith (2.37 goals-against average) also making a big contribution.
