Ranking the best and worst games for Alex Ovechkin to break Wayne Gretzky’s goals record
Alexander Ovechkin is back, and the chase for history has resumed.
Ovechkin returned to the Washington lineup on Friday, needing 27 goals to pass Wayne Gretzky for the all-time crown. He wasted little time in getting the first of those that night, and then added another on Sunday in Detroit, bringing him to 870 on his career heading into last night’s matchup with Boston.
A broken leg ended up costing Ovechkin just 16 games, which is on the low end of what we were told to expect. It’s still a decent chunk of time, and means that catching Gretzky this season is far from a sure thing. Can he still do it? Of course he can, and everyone knows it.
But when? After all, if you’re going to build toward the fall of arguably the greatest individual record in the sport, you’d at least hope that the hockey gods have a sense of drama. And now that he’s back, it’s not too early to look ahead at the Capitals’ schedule and wonder: Which games would be the best ones to see some history?
Luckily for those hockey gods, I’ve gone ahead and done the work for them. Heading into last night, Ovechkin was 25 goals away from the record, and the Caps had 46 games left. If we assume that even the sport’s greatest sniper’s absolute ceiling would be to score at a goal-per-game pace, that takes us to the first week of March and a roughly 20-game window in which the record could realistically fall (although we’ll bend that rule with one exception you’ll see below).
Let’s rank the best and worst games for it to happen.
The 10 best
10. Game 57: Oilers at Capitals (Feb. 23)
This is that one exception we mentioned up above, and it feels like a pipe dream; Ovechkin would have to score at better than a goal-a-game pace for two straight months to get close to the record by late February. Still, seeing him break Gretzky’s record against the team the Great One scored most of those goals for would be an irresistible twist on the storyline. And since it’s a Sunday afternoon game after football season, the NHL could have the entire sports world focused on the drama. I can’t rank this one any higher because it’s so unlikely, but if it ever happened it would be just about ideal.
9. Game 70: Panthers at Capitals (March 22)
This might be my Canadian color showing, but I’ve been trained to think of Saturday nights as hockey’s ideal viewing window. This is the only prime-time Saturday game the Caps have in March, and it just so happens to come against the star-studded defending Cup champions who were also the first team to (try to) draft Ovechkin. Let’s just say it wouldn’t be a hard sell.
8. Game 73: Sabres at Capitals (March 30)
Here’s something I only realized when I sat down to write this piece: Of the Capitals’ last dozen games of the season, only four are at home. That’s… not great. It goes without saying that all four of those games will be on our list, even if having Ovechkin break the record against the Sabres might feel a bit like seeing Hank Aaron park home run number 715 off of a little leaguer. Still, this is a Sunday afternoon game that could get plenty of attention, so it’s a solid option.
Watching Ovechkin break the record on trade deadline day could make for a legendary day of hockey news. (Gregory Shamus / Getty Images)7. Game 63: Red Wings at Capitals (March 7)
I went back and forth on this one. March 7 is trade deadline day, which is always one of the biggest dates of any regular season and means we’d risk splitting fan attention between two major stories. But then you think back to the last few deadlines, where most of the action has come in the days before, and deadline day itself involves a lot of sitting around looking for something to talk about. Combine two of the biggest days of the year into one, and you could have the deadline studio shows lead straight into that night’s record watch in a seamless all-day hockey firehose.
6. Not until next year (but at home)
Sure, it’s not ideal, especially if Ovechkin were to get close to the record and then fall just short. But having him go into next season a few goals shy wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. It would give the NHL an entire offseason to promote the finale to the chase, and put plans in place to nail the moment. More importantly, the league could put its thumb on the scale in terms of the October schedule, starting the Caps off with a long homestand against big-market rivals to maximize the moment’s impact.
5. Game 62: Capitals at Rangers (March 5)
If he can’t break the record at home, having him do it in a big media market like New York might be the next best option from the league’s perspective. If so, it’s far more likely to happen against the Islanders, who host the Caps in games 77 and 81, and those games come late enough in the season that you could absolutely make a case for either of them to crack this list. Instead, I’m going with an admittedly less likely scenario, where Ovechkin stays hot enough to go into Madison Square Garden looking to break the record on TNT in the building Gretzky played his final game in.
4. Game 78: Hurricanes at Capitals (April 10)
This would be late enough in the season to carry plenty of drama, but early enough that the suspense wouldn’t get uncomfortable. The league might even prefer to get the record chase done with in time for the late-season playoff bubble to reclaim the spotlight. And as a bonus, this could be a playoff preview, and there’s enough history with the Hurricanes that they wouldn’t want to be the team that had to watch the celebration. Not a bad option at all.
3. Game 76: Blackhawks at Capitals (April 4)
It’s a Friday night, which isn’t ideal from a TV perspective, but otherwise it’s hard to argue with this pick. You’d have the league’s favorite big market serving as an opponent, with an added dose of Original Six history. You’d have fellow first-overall pick Connor Bedard on the other side to see the record fall, making for a nice torch-passing vibe. And with only two other games on the slate, this is the closest the Caps come to having a night all to themselves down the stretch.
2. Game 82: Capitals at Penguins (April 17)
It’s not home ice, but otherwise this one is just about perfect. Having Ovechkin going into the final night of the season with one last shot at history would be fantastic drama. And having it happen against the team and player that has served as his greatest rival throughout his career? Icing on the cake.
It’d be hard, but not impossible, to top Ovechkin breaking the record against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. (Geoff Burke / Imagn Images)1. Game 80: Blue Jackets at Capitals (April 13)
With a handful of exceptions, most of the games on our list have been home games, for obvious reasons. While Ovechkin figures to get a huge ovation no matter where he breaks the record, the moment will resonate even more if he can do it in front of the fans who have been cheering him on for nearly two decades. This is the Capitals’ last regular-season home game of the year, so if he’s just short of the record at this point, the “final chance” tension will be off the charts. That’s enough to nudge it just ahead of the Penguins game on my list.
The five worst
5. Game 74: Capitals at Bruins (April 1)
At first glance, this would be a game between two playoff teams, even a potential first-round preview, and would see the record fall in an Original Six market. So sure, it seems like a decent option… until you double-check the date. Do you really want to see every two-bit comedian in your social feed dropping hilarious “Ovechkin breaks the record! Just kidding” pranks for three straight hours? You absolutely do not.
4. Game 64: Kraken at Capitals (March 9)
All this history on the line, and then the record finally comes against the league’s newbies? No thanks.
3. Game 71: Capitals at Jets (March 25)
This is the only one of the Capitals’ last 20 games that comes against a Canadian opponent, and it’s in Canada, which means it would be the ideal timing for any Canadian fans who plan to get weirdly patriotic about Gretzky’s record falling to a Russian. Winnipeg fans are cool, and they’re loud enough to give the moment the reaction it deserves. But all the outside noise and over-the-top takes that would go along with this one? No thanks.
2. Game 65: Capitals at Ducks (March 11)
The Caps take their three-game California swing in mid-March, which isn’t great timing considering that this could be right around when the record chase is heating up. Ovechkin is somewhat unlikely to be close to the record at this point, which is good luck for the league, who definitely don’t want to see history happen when eastern sports fans are already asleep. The Sharks game is an afternoon start, and at least if the record fell in Los Angeles you’d have the drama of it coming against one of Gretzky’s former teams. But a game against the lowly Ducks that starts at 10:00 ET on a Tuesday? No thanks.
1. Not until next year (but on the road)
Let’s face it, the most NHL thing ever would be to enter 2025-26 with Ovechkin one goal away and then start the Caps with a meandering road trip through the Pacific Division. You hadn’t even thought of that possibility until just now, but now you’re nodding along and getting angry. Anything but this one, hockey gods.

As Alex Ovechkin continues to climb the all-time goals list in the NHL, the discussion of whether he can surpass Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals has intensified. With that in mind, let’s rank the best and worst games for Ovechkin to break Gretzky’s record:1. Best Game: Stanley Cup Final
There’s no better stage for Ovechkin to break Gretzky’s record than in the Stanley Cup Final. Imagine the dramatics of Ovechkin scoring the record-breaking goal in a pivotal game to help his team win the ultimate prize.2. Best Game: All-Star Game
Breaking the record in the All-Star Game would be a memorable moment for Ovechkin and the league as a whole. It would showcase his talent and solidify his legacy as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time.3. Worst Game: Regular Season Blowout
While breaking the record in any game is an accomplishment, doing so in a blowout game where the outcome is already decided may not have the same impact. The moment may be overshadowed by the lopsided score and lack of significance.4. Worst Game: Against a Non-Playoff Team
Breaking the record against a non-playoff team may feel anticlimactic for Ovechkin and his fans. The milestone would carry more weight if achieved against a top contender or rival team in a meaningful game.Ultimately, the significance of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record will not be determined solely by the game in which it happens, but by the impact Ovechkin has had on the sport of hockey throughout his career. Regardless of when and where it occurs, Ovechkin’s pursuit of this historic milestone is sure to captivate fans and cement his place in hockey history.

Alex Ovechkin breaks NHL record for most calendar years with 40 or more goals
Alex Ovechkin broke another NHL record at year’s end.
Ovechkin’s first goal after his return from a broken fibula, an empty netter against the Toronto Maple Leafs on December 28, was his 40th marker in the 2024 calendar year. The goal pushed the Washington Capitals captain into sole possession of the most calendar years with 40 or more goals (regular season and playoffs) in NHL history.
Ovechkin has hit the mark 14 times during his career, passing Brett Hull (13) for the top spot. The Great Eight added a goal against the Detroit Red Wings a day later to close out 2024 with 41 total tallies.
Only nine players have ever scored 40 or more goals in a calendar year more than 10 times during their career. Ovechkin is the only present-day player on the list, with Hull, Mario Lemieux, and Luc Robitaille, who all retired after the 2005-06 season (Ovechkin’s rookie year), as the next most recent.
All-time 40-goal calendar years
Player Count Alex Ovechkin 14 Brett Hull 13 Wayne Gretzky 12 Mike Gartner 12 Mario Lemieux 10 Phil Esposito 10 Bobby Hull 10 Marcel Dionne 10 Luc Robitaille 10 Mike Gartner joins Ovechkin as the only players on the list to record some of those 40-goal years while with the Capitals. Gartner is one of just five Caps to have a 50-goal season after he potted 50 goals during the 1984-85 campaign.
Ovechkin’s best-ever calendar year came in 2018 when he scored 69 goals (nice) in 104 games en route to winning the Stanley Cup with the Capitals. From a rate standpoint, 2020, impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, was his most prolific year, as he scored 28 goals in just 35 games (0.80 G/GP).
His worst calendar year is a tie between 2023 and 2005. He played in 2005 for just the first few months of his rookie season, scoring 23 goals in 36 games.

His 0.59 goal-per-game rate in 2024 is the 12-best single-year rate of his career.
The big Russian winger also recently set a new NHL record for the most goals scored by a player 36 or older in their first 20 games of a campaign. After Tuesday afternoon’s win over the Boston Bruins, Ovechkin has 17 goals through 21 games this season.
Ovechkin currently has 870 career goals, which is just 24 goals shy of claiming a share of the all-time goals lead with Wayne Gretzky (894).
In a historic moment for the NHL, Alex Ovechkin has officially broken the record for the most calendar years with 40 or more goals in a season. The Washington Capitals’ superstar scored his 40th goal of the season, marking the 15th time in his career that he has reached this milestone.Ovechkin’s incredible feat surpasses the previous record held by Wayne Gretzky and Marcel Dionne, who each achieved 40 or more goals in 14 calendar years. The 36-year-old Russian forward continues to defy age and expectations, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history.
Fans and analysts alike are in awe of Ovechkin’s remarkable consistency and scoring prowess, with many hailing him as a once-in-a-generation talent. As he continues to rewrite the record books, it’s clear that Ovechkin’s impact on the game of hockey will be felt for generations to come.
Congratulations to Alex Ovechkin on this incredible achievement – here’s to many more years of goal-scoring greatness! #Ovechkin #NHLRecord #GoalScoringKing

Alex Ovechkin returns, scores 869th goal in Capitals’ win
Alex Ovechkin scored an empty-net goal in his return to action, and the Washington Capitals upended the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Saturday night.
In posting his 869th career goal, Washington’s captain is now within 25 of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL mark of 894. It was his 16th goal in 19 games this season.
Ovechkin played in his first game since he fractured his left fibula Nov. 18 against the Utah Hockey Club in a collision with forward Jack McBain. He skated with the team often and was around the locker room throughout his recovery.
“It was fun. It was tough,” Ovechkin said of his return in a postgame interview during SportsNet’s “Hockey Night In Canada” broadcast. “Obviously, it was a different rhythm, different speed. But you know, I’ll take it, and we won.”
The 39-year-old — who had never missed more than six games in his career with an ailment — was scheduled to be out four to six weeks following the injury. He resumed skating Dec. 2 and had made steady progress into the NHL’s recent holiday break.
“It was a hard month,” Ovechkin said. “I tried to be in shape as much as I can. … But I’m pretty happy to bounce back and come back to the game.”
In chasing Gretzky — during a season that has seen the resurgent Capitals storm back into playoff contention, no less — Ovechkin has kept it all in perspective.
“Just take it game by game,” Ovechkin said, “shift by shift, and try to do my best.”
Washington went 10-5-1 without Ovechkin, but coach Spencer Carbery is anticipating a significant “boost” for the Capitals as they try to maintain their position atop the Eastern Conference standings.
“He’s our captain; he’s the greatest goal scorer of all time,” Carbery said before the game. “You could feel it, like you were just waiting for the day when he’s going to come back in the lineup. You could feel his presence around, and he’s participated a little bit more, and now the day has come.”
Ovechkin, who played 14 minutes, 58 seconds, and recorded three hits and three shots in addition to his goal, has a quick turnaround. The Capitals visit the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.
Andrew Mangiapane, Jakob Chychrun, Nic Dowd and Tom Wilson also scored for the Capitals in the win. John Tavares and Bobby McMann scored for the Maple Leafs.
Logan Thompson stopped 35 shots for the win, while Matt Murray made 27 saves for Toronto.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
The return of Alex Ovechkin to the Washington Capitals lineup was met with much anticipation and excitement by fans and teammates alike. After missing several games due to injury, Ovechkin wasted no time making his presence felt on the ice.In a thrilling matchup against a tough opponent, Ovechkin wasted no time showing why he is considered one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history. With a blistering shot from the top of the circle, Ovechkin notched his 869th career goal, solidifying his place in the record books.
The goal proved to be the game-winner, as the Capitals went on to secure a hard-fought victory. Ovechkin’s return injected a much-needed spark into the team, and his leadership and scoring prowess were on full display throughout the game.
Fans erupted in cheers as Ovechkin celebrated his milestone goal, and the Capitals faithful were reminded once again of the impact their superstar captain has on the team. With Ovechkin back in the lineup, the Capitals look poised to make a strong push towards the playoffs and beyond.
Ovechkin’s return and historic goal serve as a reminder of his incredible talent and longevity in the league. As he continues to climb the all-time goal scoring list, Ovechkin’s legacy as one of the greatest players in NHL history only continues to grow.

Alex Ovechkin goals tracker: The Great Eight 25 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894
TORONTO, ON – Ovechkin, who has 870 career NHL goals, has 17 goals in 20 games played this season with the Capitals. (Photo by Steve Russell/Toronto Star via Getty Images) A once seemingly unbreakable NHL record could fall as early as the 2024-25 season thanks to the goal-scoring prowess of Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin.
The Great Eight is within striking distance of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record of 894, which Gretzky reached on March 29, 1999, against the New York Islanders. Ovechkin began this season with 853 career goals.
He remains at 870 after failing to score during Washington’s 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins during a New Year’s Eve matinee.
“It’s just a matter of time, whether it’s late this year, early next year, whenever,” Gretzky told NHL.com earlier this season about Ovechkin’s chances of breaking his record. “I mean, he’s a great player. He’s a great goal scorer.”
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in December that he will follow Ovechkin around when he’s within four or five goals of the record with Gretzky accompanying him.
Ovechkin started this season red-hot, with 15 goals in his first 18 games. Unfortunately, a fractured fibula suffered on Nov. 18 caused him to miss 16 games for the Capitals. The “Russian Machine” has been durable for his entire NHL career, having missed only 75 games due to injury since breaking in during the 2005-06 season.
Since returning from injury on Dec. 28, Ovechkin has two goals in three games.
Ovechkin will resume his chase for Gretzky’s record Thursday against the Minnesota Wild.
We will track Ovechkin’s race to 894 goals and beyond all season.

Alex Ovechkin goals tracker: The Great Eight 26 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894
Wayne Gretzky, Alex Ovechkin and Gordie Howe are the only players in NHL history to score at least 800 goals. (Photo by G Fiume/Getty Images) A once seemingly unbreakable NHL record could fall as early as the 2024-25 season thanks to the goal-scoring prowess of Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin.
The Great Eight is within striking distance of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record of 894, which Gretzky reached on March 29, 1999, against the New York Islanders. Ovechkin began this season with 853 career goals.
He’s now at 869, after scoring an empty-netter late in his return from injury on Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Capitals won 5-2.
His golden touch continued since the end of the 2023-24 season when he tallied 13 goals over his last 17 games — making it a stretch of 35 goals in his last 35 games dating back to March of last season.
Unfortunately, a fractured fibula sidelined Ovechkin on Nov. 18, causing him to miss 16 games for the Capitals. The Capitals captain has been durable for his entire NHL career, having missed only 75 games due to injury since breaking in during the 2005-06 season.
We will track Ovechkin’s race to 894 goals and beyond all season.

2024-25 NHL injury tracker: Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin returns vs. Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews remains out
The 2024-25 NHL season continues to move along. With the season in full swing, a few star players are dealing with significant injuries.
One of the players no longer on that list includes Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin, who missed 16 games with a broken fibula. On Saturday, Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said Ovechkin will return to the lineup against the Toronto Maple Leafs, marking his first game since Nov. 18.
Prior to his injury, Ovechkin was red hot and on track to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record by the end of the season. Ovechkin now needs 27 goals in Washington’s final 48 games, which would be an 82-game pace of 46 goals. The good news for fans hoping to see him pass “The Great One” is that he’s hit that mark 11 times throughout his career.
While Ovechkin will be making his return against Toronto, Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews remains out with an upper-body injury that has bothered him all season. Matthews missed almost the entire month of November but was able to return on Nov. 30. He re-aggravated the injury in a game against the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 20, and he hasn’t played since.
The injury has limited Matthews to 11 goals and 12 assists in 24 games, but the Maple Leafs have still managed to take over first place in the Atlantic Division.
Here is a list of many of the marquee players that are currently sidelined due to injury.

Injuries are a common occurrence in the fast-paced world of professional hockey, and keeping track of players’ health is crucial for teams hoping to make a deep playoff run. In this edition of the 2024-25 NHL injury tracker, we have some good news and some bad news for fans of the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Capitals’ star forward Alex Ovechkin made his long-awaited return to the lineup in a game against the Maple Leafs. Ovechkin, who had been sidelined with a lower-body injury for the past few weeks, wasted no time making an impact, scoring a goal in his first game back on the ice. His presence was sorely missed by the Capitals, and his return is a welcome sight for fans and teammates alike.
On the other side of the ice, the Maple Leafs are still without their own superstar forward, Auston Matthews. Matthews has been dealing with an upper-body injury that has kept him out of the lineup for several games now. Despite the team’s best efforts to manage his recovery, Matthews has yet to return to full health. His absence is a significant blow to the Maple Leafs, who rely heavily on his scoring prowess to drive their offense.
As the season progresses, both teams will be hoping for a clean bill of health for their star players. Injuries can be a major factor in determining a team’s success, and having key players sidelined can significantly impact a team’s chances of making a deep playoff run. We will continue to monitor the injury status of players around the league and provide updates as they become available. Stay tuned for more injury news and updates on the 2024-25 NHL injury tracker.

The great chase resumes on Saturday night.
Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is officially set to make his return to chasing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He comes back to action from a fractured fibula injury that kept him sidelines for 16 games.
Ovechkin suffered the injury in a shin-to-shin collision on Nov. 18 with Utah Hockey Club defenseman Jamie McBain. He had notched both goal No. 14 and 15 in the game, which had propelled him to being leading the NHL in scoring at 39-years-old.
WASH coach Spencer Carbery says Alexander Ovechkin returns tonight
— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) December 28, 2024
Ovechkin was well on pace to exceed Gretzky’s 894 career goals this season with an estimated time to be in February before his leg injury.
Now, things get a bit more challenging if Ovechkin plans to make history in 2024-25.
He currently stands at 868 career goals, leaving him with 27 to go in order to slide into claiming the title of hockey’s all-time highest scoring player.
WASHINGTON, DC – NOVEMBER 13: Alex Ovechkin #8 of the Washington Capitals shoots the puck against the Toronto Maple Leafs during the second period at Capital One Arena on November 13, 2024 in Washington, DC.
Ovechkin has scored against every franchise he’s ever faced in the NHL at one point or another. He has 44 career goals against the Maple Leafs, which is tied for the fifth amount against any opponent.
He’s scored the most against the Winnipeg Jets, who were the Atlanta Thrashers up until 2011-12, with 55 goals.
The Capitals have surged back into competitive territory in the wake of their fabled captain’s legendary pursuits. After making the playoffs as the worst statistical team to do so in 33 years last season, Washington is perched in second place of the crowded Metropolitan Division and has even gone 10-5-1 in Ovechkin’s stead.
What will aid Ovechkin’s chase is the improvement in the power play, which he already leads the sport’s history with at 316. The three-time MVP is known for setting up “in his office,” which is where he parks himself at the top of the left circle as droves of fellow Capitals have fed him one-timer shots through his 20-year career.
The Capitals power-play unit has increased by only one percent since last season (including the 16 games Ovechkin has been absent for).
Though the man advantage is Ovechkin’s bread and butter, the Capitals’ progression in the NHL standings is primarily thanks to their stronger five-on-five play this year. Washington is ranked No. 5 overall in expected goals rate at five-on-five, as per Moneypuck.
Ovechkin is the No. 2 player overall in expected goals per 60 minutes in all situations. So whether it be on the power play or not, it’s still in the realm of possibility for Ovechkin to bank another 27 goals this season, especially with the Capitals primed to make the playoffs.

Alexander Ovechkin, the beloved captain of the Washington Capitals, has made his highly anticipated return to the ice after missing several games due to injury. Fans all over the hockey world have been eagerly awaiting his comeback, and he did not disappoint in his first game back.Ovechkin is currently chasing the legendary Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record of 894 goals. With his recent return, the question on everyone’s mind is just how far away is he from breaking Gretzky’s record?
As of now, Ovechkin has scored 741 career goals, leaving him 153 goals shy of Gretzky’s record. While this may seem like a daunting task, Ovechkin has proven time and time again that he is a goal-scoring machine capable of putting up impressive numbers season after season.
At 36 years old, Ovechkin shows no signs of slowing down and continues to be a dominant force on the ice. With his determination and skill, many believe that he has a legitimate shot at surpassing Gretzky’s record and etching his name in the history books as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time.
Only time will tell if Ovechkin can achieve this incredible feat, but one thing is for certain – his return to the Capitals lineup has reignited the excitement and hope of fans everywhere. Let’s continue to cheer on Ovechkin as he continues his pursuit of hockey greatness.

TORONTO — Alex Ovechkin will continue his pursuit of the NHL’s all-time scoring record when he returns to the Washington Capitals lineup Saturday against the Maple Leafs.
The Capitals’ winger has been sidelined since breaking his fibula on Nov. 18 in a collision with Utah Hockey Club forward Jack McBain. Ovechkin was leading the NHL with 15 goals in 18 games at the time — for 868 total goals in his career — and paused his hot pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring mark of 894.
That quest is back on now in a big way. But Ovechkin’s return means more than just that to Washington.
“The obvious thing [Ovechkin brings] is the goal scoring,” said Washington coach Spencer Carbery. “But I even just think the threat of him being able to score, I think it lifts up our entire group. Him being in the lineup, his presence, his infectious personality, demeanor, and him being on the ice…everybody in the building, along with our 19 other players, believe that he can score and that lifts our entire group up.”
Ovechkin said it was a “hard month” sitting on the sidelines with most of his efforts focused on working out in the gym. Getting back on Gretzky’s heels wasn’t at the forefront of his mind until he got the green light to back in.
“At that point, you don’t think about all the stuff happening around [the chase],” he said. “You just focus on your recovery, your injury, and you [try] to get better coming back.”
Many of Ovechkin’s teammates have been invested for years in his title run too, not only because of what it means for Ovechkin individually but their entire group.
“When you’re in the moment, you’re on the edge of your seat when he scores,” said Carbery. “But I honestly don’t think the guys pay that much attention to [the total], other than we’re just waiting for him to help us win another hockey game. I think it’s one of the reasons [Ovechkin] has been so successful; he’s so narrowly focused on helping us win a game tonight.”
The 39-year-old — who had never missed more than six games in his career with an ailment — was scheduled to be out 4-6 weeks following the injury. He resumed skating on Dec. 2 and had made steady progress into the NHL’s recent holiday break.
Ovechkin was back at Friday’s practice in his top-line spot with Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas and on the Capitals’ top power play unit, a strong indication that playing Saturday was the plan.
Washington went 10-5-1 without Ovechkin available and Carbery anticipates a significant “boost” for the Capitals as they try to maintain their position atop the Eastern Conference Standings.
“He’s our captain; he’s the greatest goal scorer of all time,” said Carbery. “You could feel it, like you were just waiting for the day when he’s going to come back in the lineup. You could feel his presence around and he’s participated a little bit more and now the day has come.”
After missing five weeks due to a lower-body injury, star forward Alex Ovechkin is finally back in the Washington Capitals’ lineup. The team and fans alike are thrilled to have their captain back on the ice, as Ovechkin is known for his scoring prowess and leadership on the team.During his absence, the Capitals managed to stay competitive and maintain their position in the standings, but there’s no doubt that Ovechkin’s return will provide a much-needed boost to the team’s offensive production.
Ovechkin’s presence on the ice is sure to make a big impact on the team’s performance moving forward, and fans can’t wait to see him back in action. Welcome back, Ovi! #LetsGoCaps
