There was an overnight fire at major chicken farm in South Carolina.
Multiple fire departments responded to the blaze at the Amick Farms plant on U.S. 178/Batesburg Highway. That’s near the intersection with Spann Road in the Batesburg-Leesville area of Saluda County.
No injuries were reported in the fire at “one of the most important businesses in Saluda County,” Saluda County EMS said on it’s Facebook page.
There was no word about how long it took to get the fire under control and extinguished, or the extent of the damage caused to the chicken plant.

The Saluda County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the fire. Information about an investigation, and which agency was leading the inquiry, was not immediately available. There was no word if foul play was suspected.
“We appreciate the extraordinary efforts of our local emergency responders, and we are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire,” Amick Farms officials said on social media.
The Batesburg facility has 1,770 employees, according to Zoominfo.
Amick Farms’ products are distributed in more than 40 states in retail, food service and industrial markets. In addition to the facility in Batesburg, Amick Farms has plants that include a feed mill and hatchery in both Hurlock, Maryland and Laurel, Mississippi.

There was no word about how the fire at the Batesburg-Leesville facility might affect Amick Farms’ overall operation, or how long it will take to recover from damage caused by the blaze.
“Our thoughts are with the Amick Farms work force today,” Saluda County EMS said.
Amick Farms officials said work would be disrupted for at least two days. Both Sunday’s sanitation and night shift as well as Monday’s day shift employees were told not to report for their normally scheduled shifts.
“Appropriate measures are being taken to best serve our team members, growers and customers,” Amick Farms officials said. “We appreciate your commitment to your job and being a part of the Amick Team!”
In November 2024, there was a fire at a Maryland farm that had a contract with Amick Farms where about 20,000 chickens died, WBOC reported.

Officials report fire at South Carolina chicken farm
SALUDA COUNTY (WIS) – Saluda County Emergency Management Director Josh Morton says an overnight fire caused extensive damage to a chicken processing facility at Amick Farms in Batesburg.
Crews from multiple counties battled the fire throughout Saturday night and well into Sunday afternoon.
“This has been a collaborative effort amongst a lot of people,” said Josh Morton, Emergency Management Director for Saluda County.
A 19-hour effort is how long it took crews, including those from neighboring counties, to put the fire out. The fire started around 9:30 p.m. Saturday and lasted until nearly 4:30 p.m. Sunday at a processing facility at Amick Farms, one of the largest chicken production plants in South Carolina.
Five fire crews from Saluda County initially responded with the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department. As firefighters battled the fire overnight, they needed to call for backup.
“After we got on scene and began working, we started seeing we were going to need additional manpower,” Morton said. “At that point, we reached out to state fire mobilization through the state fire marshal’s office and they were able to help us get some assistance from some of the surrounding counties.”
Saluda Emergency Management Director Josh Morton says there is extensive damage inside the building. Morton says there were no injuries and the maintenance workers in the building at the time of the fire were able to escape.
“We had a lot of those crews here overnight, and then, this morning around 9 o’clock, we had brought in some additional crews from Lexington County to help relieve some of our folks who had been here since 9 o’clock last night,” Morton said.
Amick Farms said in a statement sent to WIS “We appreciate the extraordinary efforts of our local emergency responders. We are currently assessing the damage and conducting an investigation to determine the cause. Appropriate measures are being taken to best serve our team members, growers, and our customers.”

From the Great Lakes of Iowa to an RV manufacturing hub to a major college town, RAGBRAI 52 will let riders experience the variety and scenic charm of northern Iowa.
The route for the 52nd edition of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, announced Saturday, will extend 406 miles from Orange City to Guttenberg. Along the way riders will stop overnight in Milford, Estherville, Forest City, Iowa Falls, Cedar Falls and Oelwein.
Here is what to know about the beginning, ending and overnight towns on the July 20-26 ride.
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Pass-through town in 1975, 1993, 1996, 2002, 2005 and 2012. Starting town in 2017.
Pella may be famous as the Dutch-est city in Iowa, a state that was a historic destination for immigrants from the Netherlands, but Orange City is no slouch when it comes to windmills and wooden shoes. Just like Pella, it has an annual spring Tulip Festival and Dutch-themed decor. It takes its name from the Royal House of Orange in the Netherlands. And it was founded 1870 by Henry Hospers, a 17-year-old resident of — you guessed it — Pella.
But there is one thing that sets Orange City apart from Pella: its food. Pella has its eponymous bologna and the S-shaped pastries known as Dutch letters. Orange City takes it to a whole different level as the home of Pizza Ranch. The 14-state, 200-plus store chain was founded in 1981 by Adrie Groeneweg in nearby Hull and moved its headquarters to Orange City in 2007.
Sure, pizza isn’t Dutch food. But Pizza Ranch’s style — buffet service with not just pizza but chicken, vegetables, salads and desserts — definitely is, as anyone who’s ever visited one of Amsterdam’s countless buffet restaurants can testify. Iowa’s 68 Pizza Ranch locations are a favorite stop for politicians campaigning in the Iowa caucuses, and also for RAGBRAI riders after a hunger-inducing day on the road.
Of course there’s a Pizza Ranch in Orange City. So load up a plate with pizza, chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy and a sugary slice of dessert pizza and dig in.
Note: This is one of those years when a lot of riders are likely to forego the traditional Missouri River tire dip. Orange City is about 4 ½ miles from neighboring Alton on the Floyd River, a tributary, but it’s 10 times that far from the closest stretch of the Missouri itself in Sioux City.
Milford
Population: 3,321
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Pass-through town in 1982, 1985, 1996, 2005 and 2014.
Iowa isn’t just cornfields. It has its own Great Lakes, and Milford is the southern gateway to this vacationland, welcoming thousands of tourists each summer.
The seven lakes, including East and West Okoboji and Big Spirit, are collectively one of the most popular tourism draws in the state. The shores of the clear-water glacial remnant lakes are lined with vacation homes and boat-up bars and restaurants, plus the famous Arnolds Park amusement park with its vintage roller coaster and Ferris wheel. And for fans of all sorts of two-wheeled vehicles, the neighboring city of Spirit Lake is home of the Indian motorcycle factory, which offers tours.
Milford has served as a RAGBRAI pass-through town five times before, but this will be its first time it’s a full-fledged overnight town.
Estherville
Population: 5,823
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Overnight town in 1982, 1996 and 2005.
Home to Iowa Lakes Community College, Estherville is another town in the Iowa Great Lakes region. It’s also known for what happened on May 10, 1879, when a meteorite exploded along a 7-mile path in the surrounding countryside. The three largest fragments fell 4 miles north of Estherville, weighing 431 pounds, 151 pounds and 106 pounds, respectively, according to the University of Iowa.
Portions of the meteorite are on display in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, among other institutions. A sizable chunk also resides in the Estherville Meteorite Center downtown, and fragments of the big rock are on display in the Estherville Public Library, where a sculpture in Library Square, commissioned in 1980, celebrates the meteorite.
Another monument marks a spot outside town where pieces of the meteorite fell.
Forest City
Population: 4,285
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Overnight town in 1982, 1987, 2002 and 2014.
Straddling Hancock and Winnebago counties, Forest City was the longtime headquarters of recreational vehicle manufacturer Winnebago Industries, which moved its offices to a Minneapolis suburb in 2021. It still is a major production center for the vehicles so synonymous with their segment that some people call all motorhomes Winnebagos. Founded in 1960, Winnebago in 2024 had revenues of almost $3 billion.
The Forest City area also is home to Pilot Knob State Park, one of Iowa’s first state parks. Established in 1923, its most distinctive feature is a 33-foot circular observation tower.
Iowa Falls
Population: 5,002.
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Overnight town in 1978, 1995, 2004 and 2021.
Tucked into the Iowa River Greenbelt in Hardin County, Iowa Falls is surrounded by picturesque valleys and woods. Most scenic of all are the limestone bluffs lining the river where it runs through town. RAGBRAI riders in 2021 enjoyed splashing and floating in the downtown waters, and the swinging pedestrian bridge across the river is a local landmark.
Another landmark, in a corner of the city’s Estes Park, is what is billed as Iowa’s oldest operating popcorn stand. It’s been in operation since 1948, but Iowa Falls has had a popcorn stand since the 1870s.
The Scenic City Empress, a 50-passenger double-decked riverboat, offers public and private cruises on the river from June through mid-October.
Cedar Falls
Population: 40,737.
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Pass-through town in 1985. Overnight town in 1989, 1998, 2007 and 2015.
The largest overnight town on this year’s route, Cedar Falls is home to the University of Northern Iowa. UNI had a fall 2024 enrollment of 9,283, according to the university, and along with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University is one of just three public universities in the state.
As you’d expect from a major college town, the downtown is full of eateries and bars, including a tasting room of the appropriately bike-themed SingleSpeed Brewing, one of Iowa’s largest makers of craft beer.
Cedar Falls takes its name from the Cedar River, a 329-mile-long waterway that starts in southeastern Minnesota and is a tributary of the Iowa River, meeting that stream in southeastern Iowa. Downstream, Cedar Rapids also takes its name from the river.
Cedar Falls sits about 8 miles from downtown Waterloo, which served as a RAGBRAI overnight town in 2021 and is a major manufacturing center for John Deere tractors.
Oelwein
Population: 5,920
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Pass-through town in 2014. Overnight town in 1990 and 2002.
Located in Fayette County, Oelwein was founded in 1872 by the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Minnesota Railroad. The town was named after the Oelwein family, who owned the land where its railroad station was established.
Today Oelwein is an industrial center with employers like Ashley Industrial Molding, Transco Railway Products and Bertch Cabinet Manufacturing. It’s also where RAGBRAI Ride Director Matt Phippen grew up and where he first encountered RAGBRAI when Oelwein hosted the ride in 1990.
The ride’s stop there also will be a homecoming for some of the Iowa state troopers directing traffic for the ride: It’s headquarters for the state patrol’s District 10, covering Iowa’s northeast corner.
Nestled in the southwest corner of the Iowa’s portion of the unglaciated Driftless Area, the countryside around Oelwein is home to a community of Old Order Amish, and the Oelwein Chamber offers motorcoach tours, booked in advance.

Guttenberg
Population: 1,817.
Previous times on RAGBRAI: Ending town in 1980, 1987, 1996, 2005 and 2014.
First visited by French explorers in 1673, the area was originally named Prairie La Porte, meaning “the door to the prairie.” German immigrants incorporated the city in 1850, but when you line up for the Mississippi River tire dip, remember that the locals pronounce the name with a short u, as in “gut,” as opposed to the “goot” of the similarly named German city.
Buildings from the era of German immigration, made with limestone mined from nearby bluffs, line the scenic riverfront. Today the city is known for manufacturing and its recreational opportunities along the river.
