  • Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs Philadelphia Flyers (1:00 p.m. MST)

The Avs come into this contest coming off of a dominating performance against the Blues, scoring four goals in the first period, including the first goal in an Avs sweater for Martin Necas in his home debut. The speed Necas plays with has meshed seamlessly in the Avs system so far, and a rapport with Nathan MacKinnon is quickly forming.

As for today, the recipe for success should look the same as it did on Friday night. The Avs weren’t afraid to shoot the puck, and were rewarded early and often on the scoresheet. The Blues simply could not keep up. With this being the final time the Avs will play on front of the Avs faithful until February 26th, the Avs should be ready to come out flying and put on another show for the fans.

Cale Makar and Scott Wedgewood were absent from practice on Saturday. Makar, who blocked a shot with his foot against the Dallas Stars on January 18th, has seemingly been managing that issue ever since, so this should be nothing more than maintenance for the Avs star defenseman.

Conversely, Wedgewood’s situation is a mystery. He has not appeared in game action in 8 days, last playing in Boston against the Bruins to open the Avs recent road trip. Additionally, Trent Miner was recalled from the Colorado Eagles yesterday, so the signs point towards Wedgewood being a scratch today.

As is the case with matinee affairs, the Avs won’t have a morning skate prior to the start of the game, so lineups will be confirmed in warmups.

    Projected Lineup

    Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Martin Necas (88)

    Jonathan Drouin (27) — Casey Mittelstadt (37) — Juuso Parssinen (16)

    Miles Wood (28) — Jack Drury (18) — Ross Colton (20)

    Joel Kiviranta (94) — Parker Kelly (17) — Logan O’Connor (25)

    Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)

    Samuel Girard (49) — Josh Manson (42)

    Keaton Middleton (67) — Sam Malinski (70)

    Mackenzie Blackwood (39)

  • Sharks (15-32-6) vs Kraken (22-27-3) | 7:30 p.m.

    One: Limit the ‘Free Opportunities’

Kraken coach Dan Bylsma was no fan of Tuesday’s first period against Anaheim, even if Seattle finished the frame leading 3-2.

“We were anticipating a game in which if we gave pucks away or gave [Anaheim] too many free opportunities, they would counter with their skill upfront and also their D-men,” said Bylsma post-game. “I don’t think the first was a comfortable period for us. Too many opportunities for them, with their [offensive] rush skill. We had some answers for it, with goals of our own. But [Kraken giveaways] manifested more in the second period with clear turnovers with the puck.”

Thursday’s opponent, San Jose, has offensive talent of its own, including 2024 No. 1 pick Macklin Celebrini (16 goals, 20 assists for 36 points in 41, missing 12 games due to injury), 2021 first-rounder William Eklund (10 G, 17 A) and 25-year-old Fabian Zetterlund (14 G, 18 A). As for the Kraken in the O-zone, forward Eeli Tolvanen has three goals in the last three games (Jan. 25 to 28, which matches a similar streak he notched Jan. 25 to 28 in 2023). Tolvanen told reporters Tuesday night in the locker room it’s time for “a reset right here, right now” as the Kraken have four more home games (including wild-card spot holder Calgary) and a road trip to face those same Flames before the 4 Nations Faceoff break. Fewer giveaways and more takeaways instead would help would help with the reset and Bylsma’s stated goal to two of every three games in this stretch.

Two: Roster Moves with Grubauer, Stezka, Fleury

The Kraken placed goaltender Philipp Grubauer on waivers Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. He was not claimed and will now report to American Hockey League affiliate Coachella Valley, which plays a pair of games in Tucson this weekend. Dan Bylsma said Thursday morning Grubauer wasn’t likely to get much practice or game starts with the current schedule of basically five games every other day until the 4 Nations Faceoff break.

Firebirds goaltender Ales Stezka and defenseman Cale Fleury were called up Thursday morning. Grubauer has posted a 5-15-1 record this season with a save percentage of .866 over those 21 games. Joey Daccord had started a season-high seven-straight games before Grubauer faced Anaheim Tuesday. Check back on the Kraken app and website on Thursday for updates on Grubauer.

Three: Know the Foe: San Jose 2-8-0 in Last 10 Games

The Sharks beat Pittsburgh, 2-1, Tuesday at home, not a good trip for the Penguins, whose only goal came from Sidney Crosby. San Jose broke a six-game losing streak when the aforementioned Celebrini broke a 1-1 tie in the third period after Crosby had scored earlier in the final 20 minutes. SJS goalie Yaroslav Askarov stopped a penalty shot in the frame and made 32 saves overall in the win. The 22-year-old Russian-born goaltender is 4-5-2 in 12 appearances with a .905 save percentage.

Get ready for an exciting matchup as the San Jose Sharks (15-32-6) take on the Seattle Kraken (22-27-3) tonight at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will be looking to secure a much-needed win in this battle on the ice.

The Sharks have had a tough season so far, but they are determined to turn things around and finish strong. With key players stepping up and showing their skills, they are ready to take on the challenge of facing the Kraken.

On the other hand, the Kraken have been showing some promise in their inaugural season and are looking to continue building momentum. With a mix of experienced veterans and talented rookies, they have the potential to come out on top in this game.

Be sure to tune in at 7:30 p.m. to see which team will come out victorious in this exciting matchup between the Sharks and the Kraken. It’s sure to be a game you won’t want to miss! #NHL #Sharks #Kraken #HockeyNight

  • Kraken (19-23-3) at Jets (30-12-3) | 5:00 p.m.

One: Daccord Back in Midseason Form

WINNIPEG – While the Kraken would prefer not to fall behind in any game, there’s an important and recurring comeback element that Joey Daccord delivered in the 4-2 win at Pittsburgh. Once the game was tied at 1-1, the 28-year-old made several stops on Grade-A scoring chances. He faced nine alone in the first 20 minutes. Over the last two seasons, Daccord has consistently recovered from go-ahead opposing goals to keep the game close. Goalies talk about wiping the mental slate clean after a goal. Daccord backs it up and it’s one reason why he has two wins in his first two starts since returning to the active roster. He’s surrendered four goals in those wins but faced 68 for a .941 save percentage. He appears to be back in stride, shades of November when he put together a personal five-game win streak.

Behind the scenes, Daccord is avid about workouts and full-on-ice prep sessions with goalie coach Steve Briere. Jamie Oleksiak, fellow Tuesday night hero, emphasized Daccord as “such a professional with his day-to-day and how he treats the game, it just makes you want to play that much harder for him.”

In front of the cameras, Daccord makes sure to credit the defensive work in front of him from D-men and forwards: “[Pittsburgh} has a lot of offensive weapons … our guys did a really good job making my life easy. For the most part, [the shots] were kept to the outside. The guys had a lot of good sticks and blocks, which made it easy for me. It’s fun back there when we’re playing that well.”

Two: Hayden Latest Example of NHL Depth at AHL Coachella Valley

The American Hockey League affiliate Firebirds continue their upswing with points in seven of their last eight games, good for second in the Pacific Division (closing in on archrival Calgary) and a top-five record across the league. That’s a credit to a much younger team than the first two CVF seasons, plus the coaching staff led by first-year CVF coach Derek Laxdal. The coaches have been adjusting to call-ups such as NHL-tested veterans Ben Meyers, Gustav Olofsson and Mitchell Stephens (now centering the Kraken fourth line with Yanni Gourde out for at least two more weeks). The latest call-up is seasoned pro John Hayden, who was right wing on the fourth line with Stephens and Brandon Tanev.

Hayden is widely praised as a pro’s pro and role model (prospect Jacob Melanson is Exhibit A) who leads by example – just ask Firebirds strength and conditioning coach Brandon Wickett. Dan Bylsma joined in when asked about Hayden’s Tuesday performance: “He started with a great read to start the game [a shot on goal through bodies that required a touch save]. John brings the physicality and energy; we saw that on a number of shifts tonight: hunting the puck, being physical on the puck and having the puck in the offensive zone. And the shot blocks in the third period … those two were big, big blocks.”

Three: Know the Foe: Winnipeg First in NHL to Reach 30 Wins

The Jets are playing at a winning percentage of exactly .700, or seven of every 10 possible standings points. That’s tops in the Western Conference and second only to the surprising Washington Capitals. The Jets are doing so with both a strong offense and stingy defense (all-world goalie Connor Hellebuyck is a huge factor in the latter), sitting on the top of the NHL with a plus-53 goal differential. The Central Division leader is 17-4-3 at home. The Jets offense is led by Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele, who both have 26 goals. Connor, who has 33 to make it 59 points in 45 games, caught up with Scheifele (26 G, 26 A, 52 points) in goals after a natural hat trick (in six-plus first-period minutes) during a Tuesday 6-1 home romp over Vancouver. It’s clearly a challenging foe in the Kraken mission to return with a winning road trip and momentum for the homestand.

Exciting Matchup Ahead: Kraken (19-23-3) Set to Face Jets (30-12-3) at 5:00 p.m.

Get ready for a thrilling showdown as the Seattle Kraken (19-23-3) take on the Winnipeg Jets (30-12-3) in what promises to be a high-intensity game. The Kraken, looking to improve their record and climb the standings, will have their work cut out for them against the formidable Jets.

With the Jets boasting an impressive 30-12-3 record, they will be a tough opponent for the Kraken. However, anything can happen in hockey, and the Kraken will be looking to pull off an upset and secure a crucial victory.

Tune in at 5:00 p.m. to catch all the action and see which team comes out on top in this exciting matchup between the Kraken and Jets. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be a thrilling game of hockey.

  • Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs Edmonton Oilers (7:30 p.m. MT)

The Colorado Avalanche are back in action tonight to square off against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. After a come from behind victory against the New York Rangers on Tuesday, the Avs had clinched the result they were after but were not happy with how they played – with Head Coach Jared Bednar citing their performance as “unimpressive.”

“Ultimately, we only had half of the team playing. That’s it. Sums up everything,” Bednar said post-game on Tuesday.

The Avs will be in tough tonight if they put together a similar effort, as the Oilers boast some of the deepest offensive talent in the NHL and have been pairing their offensive results with some solid goaltending. The Avs are going to need more from than what they gave on Tuesday to pull this result out.

    Kraken (17-19-2) vs Canucks (17-11-8) | 7:00 p.m.

One: Forward Line Chemistry Times Three

Following the Kraken’s decisive win over Utah Monday, Dan Bylsma evaluated his team’s best forward line to be the trio of Matty Beniers centering wings Jaden Schwartz and new guy Kaapo Kakko. After practice on New Year’s Day, the Seattle head coach reaffirmed the Beniers line has, in fact, been the team’s best over the last three games, including the two wins since returning from the holiday break.

The emerging and pretty much instant chemistry has resulted in six goals and six assists from that line in the three games. Better yet, it solidifies the Kraken line formations with Yanni Gourde reunited with wings Brandon Tanev and Tye Kartye (a trio Bylsma praised as the team’s most consistent/best when together earlier this season). Since his return from a three-game healthy scratch segment, rookie center Shane Wright and linemates Oliver Bjorkstrand and Eeli Tolvanen have similarly been deemed the best line in certain games.

The remaining line combo is center Chandler Stephenson between Jared McCann and Andre Burakovsky (the latter in and out of the lineup, missing one of the wins with an illness).

“I think [the Beniers line] is only going to continue to get better,” said Bylsma Wednesday. “And that means we have four lines that can be effective, shift after shift, night after night. That’s when we are at our best.”

Two: Going to the Defensive: Puck Management, Grubauer in Goal

Bylsma made a point in his post-practice media meetup to note that puck management (getting clean defensive zone exits, no turnovers in the neutral and/or entering the offensive end) is essential to the best defensive play for his squad. Otherwise, the team is playing “transition defense, which is the hardest to defend,” as the opponents are rushing up ice, and all five Kraken skaters have to react quickly rather than control the play. Bylsma said puck management has been better but still needs to be a focus in the important division games against Vancouver on Thursday and Calgary on Saturday.

Bylsma said Joey Daccord is still day-to-day with an upper body injury (a bruise not fully healed to allow him to play his position) and indicated the Kraken goalie would be backing up against Vancouver. Phillip Grubauer will get his third straight start for the first time this season.

“Grubi’s best hockey has been played [since he returned from a week-long injury of his own],” said Bylsma. He’s played a couple of great games where he has kept us in it, made some huge saves, and kept us in it the whole way. It’s great to see us get him some wins because early on the season, he was playing solid in the net and not getting the result.”

Three: Know the Foe: Vancouver Still Missing Hughes, Pettersson

Vancouver will no doubt be motivated to reverse the outcome against Seattle after last Saturday’s dramatic overtime win, a game that feels like a rivalry revved up to new heights with chippy play threading through the drama. The Canucks are 10-4-2 in road games, but it should be noted VAN (first in the Western Conference wild-card race) is missing its top scorer, defenseman Quinn Hughes (10 goals, 32 assists) and first-line forward Elias Pettersson, another top scorer who opponents must game-plan. Thursday’s rematch and the Saturday home contest with Calgary (third in the wild-card standings) are games with a potential four-point swing in the standings each night. “It’s now a race to the bye week [in February],” said Kraken D-man Brandon Montour said after practice. “These are big games coming up.”

Join us tonight at 7:00 p.m. as the Seattle Kraken (17-19-2) take on the Vancouver Canucks (17-11-8) in what is sure to be an exciting matchup! Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. Buffalo Sabres (7:00 p.m.)

It was a busy morning for the Colorado Avalanche with a Gabe Landeskog signifying at morning skate and an extension for depth defenseman Keaton Middleton announced. Still, there is a game to play tonight against the Buffalo Sabres. The Avalanche look to extend their five-game win streak and the Sabres hoping to build on a recent stretch of better play as they avenge the loss in Buffalo against the Avalanche where they let a 4-0 lead slip away.

    Colorado Avalanche

With Val Nichushkin out of the lineup with a day-to-day lower body injury presumably Casey Mittelstadt moves back to the second line from the fourth line to face his former team. The Avalanche recalled Oskar Olausson, who will be the 40th player to dress for the team this season and surely slots in on the fourth line.

    Projected Lineup

Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Mikko Rantanen

Jonathan Drouin – Casey Mittelstadt – Ross Colton

Joel Kiviranta – Parker Kelly – Logan O’Connor

Jere Innala – Juuso Parssinen – Oskar Olausson

    Devon Toews – Cale Makar

    Sam Girard – Josh Manson

    Keaton Middleton – Sam Malinski

    Scott Wedgewood

Both teams have been playing well recently, with the Avalanche sitting near the top of the Western Conference and the Sabres showing improvement under new head coach Don Granato. Will the high-powered offense of the Avalanche be too much for the Sabres to handle, or can Buffalo pull off an upset at home?

The City of Pasadena announced Colorado Boulevard will close to motor vehicles earlier than in prior years for the 2025 Tournament of Roses Parade, with closures beginning at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31.

The changes aim to provide additional time for parade staging and preparation, with the boulevard remaining closed through the conclusion of staging and clean-up following the parade.

The closure will affect Colorado Boulevard through downtown Pasadena until approximately 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1.

Officials have designated several alternate routes to help manage traffic flow during the closure period (See map above)

Motorists can use Walnut Street or the 210 freeway for east-west travel north of Colorado Boulevard, while Del Mar Boulevard or Cordova Street serve as southern alternatives.

The City has established specific crossing points for north-south travel between 10 p.m. on December 31 and 6 a.m. on January 1, with crossing locations noted on the official map.

A New Year’s Eve 5K race at midnight Tuesday will create additional temporary closures from Pasadena Avenue to Hill Street. Eight major intersections along the race route will close to cross traffic at 11 p.m. and reopen at the end of the race: Pasadena Avenue, El Molino Avenue, Fair Oaks Avenue, Marengo Avenue, Los Robles Avenue, El Molino Avenue, Lake Avenue, and Wilson Avenue.

Property owners and merchants along Colorado Boulevard planning to host events, viewing parties, or expecting vendor deliveries must ensure their guests and vendors arrive before the 10 p.m. closure. Those unable to arrive before closure must park in areas without restricted parking and walk to their destinations.

For assistance during the event, residents can call (626) 577-6426 for questions about towed vehicles between 5 p.m. on December 31, 2024, and 6 p.m. on January 1, 2025.

For questions about closures and access, the Visitor Hotline is available at (877) 793-9911.
