  • Fantastic Fiorentina keep pace with Serie A’s top four after downing Genoa

Fiorentina ended a three-game winless run at Stadio Artemio Franchi with a 2-1 win against Genoa in Serie A, a result which extends their remarkable unbeaten run in home meetings with their opponents to 27 matches.

The hosts started strongly and had a penalty shout inside the early stages – Morten Frendrup’s tug on Dodo’s shirt was enough for the VAR to send the on-field referee to the monitor, but he defied common precedent and stuck with his original decision.

La Viola were not disappointed for long though, as Moise Kean produced a wonderful, distinctive flick towards goal that found its way into the net on nine minutes.

Connecting with Rolando Mandragora’s free-kick, the striker netted his 13th league goal this season to stay very much in the Golden Boot race, with only one player having managed more in SA this term.

On the half-hour mark, Fiorentina doubled their lead through ex-Genoa player Albert Gudmundsson, whose shot deflected in after he connected with Robin Gosens’ cross.

The visitors really ought to have pulled one back before half-time though, as Maxwel Cornet could only curl over the bar from such a promising position after being fed through by Morten Thorsby.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Genoa pulled a goal back through Koni De Winter, as he headed home Aaron Martin’s corner.

The visitors pushed for a swift second as the pendulum started to swing in their favour, but Fabio Miretti’s strike from the edge of the box flew just past the near post.

Despite being pegged back, Fiorentina were still dangerous on the counter as Gosens bombed forward again and unleashed a great cross to find Dodo, whose header was blocked on the line by Johan Vasquez.

Down the other end, De Winter almost netted his brace after connecting with another corner, but this time his header was pushed away by David de Gea.

Genoa’s late push for an equaliser was ultimately not enough, as they fell to just a second defeat in six league places, keeping them in 12th place in the table while Fiorentina rise into the top-five, just a point adrift of Juventus in fourth having played a game fewer.

Fiorentina continued their impressive run in Serie A with a convincing 3-0 victory over Genoa, keeping pace with the league’s top four teams.

The Viola put on a dominant display from start to finish, with goals from Dusan Vlahovic, Gaetano Castrovilli, and Nikola Milenkovic securing the win. The team’s attacking prowess was on full display, as they created numerous chances and capitalized on their opportunities.

Fiorentina’s strong defensive performance also played a key role in the victory, as they limited Genoa’s scoring opportunities and kept a clean sheet.

With this win, Fiorentina now sit comfortably in fifth place in the Serie A standings, just behind the top four teams. Their impressive form and consistent performances have made them a serious contender for a spot in Europe next season.

Fans of the Viola will be thrilled with their team’s performance and will be eagerly anticipating their next match as they continue their push for a top-four finish. Fantastic Fiorentina indeed!

  • Durant, Booker on pace to hit historic scoring marks

Kevin Durant and Devin Booker are lighting up the scoreboard this season and are on pace to hit historic scoring marks.

Durant, who is currently averaging 29.1 points per game for the Brooklyn Nets, is on track to join the elite 30,000-point club. The 32-year-old forward has already amassed over 25,000 career points and shows no signs of slowing down.

Booker, on the other hand, is putting up impressive numbers for the Phoenix Suns with an average of 26.2 points per game. The 24-year-old guard has been a scoring machine since entering the league and is on pace to become one of the youngest players to reach 10,000 career points.

Both Durant and Booker are proving to be elite scorers in today’s NBA, and their ability to consistently put up big numbers is a testament to their talent and work ethic. It will be exciting to see if they can continue their scoring prowess and etch their names in the record books by the end of the season.

  • US economy grows at slower-than-expected pace in fourth quarter

The US economy grew at a slower-than-expected pace in the fourth quarter.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis’s advance estimate of fourth quarter US gross domestic product (GDP) showed the economy grew at an annualized pace of 2.3% during the period, below the 2.6% growth expected by economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The reading came in lower than the 3.1% growth seen in the third quarter.

Increases in consumer spending and government spending drove economic growth in the quarter while decreases in investment offset some gains. For the year, the US economy grew at 2.8% pace, slightly below the 2.9% number seen in 2023 but above the 2.5% growth seen in 2022.

Meanwhile, the “core” Personal Consumption Expenditures index, which excludes the volatile food and energy categories, grew by 2.5% in the fourth quarter, in line with estimates and above the 2.2% seen in the prior quarter.

The data’s release comes as investors try to gauge if the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates again in 2025 after holding them steady on Wednesday. Powell said in a press conference that the economy “remains strong” while inflation “remains somewhat elevated.”

“We don’t need to be in a hurry to adjust our policy stance,” Fed Chair Powell said.

Following Wednesday’s Fed meeting, markets see less than a 50% chance that the Fed cuts rates before its June meeting, per the CME FedWatch Tool.

The US economy grew at a slower-than-expected pace in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to recent data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. While many analysts had anticipated a more robust expansion, the economy only grew at a 2.3% annualized rate in the final three months of the year.

This slower growth was primarily attributed to a combination of factors, including supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and rising inflation. The ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic also continued to weigh on economic activity, particularly in sectors such as travel, hospitality, and entertainment.

Despite the weaker-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter, many economists remain cautiously optimistic about the outlook for the US economy in 2022. The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, along with significant fiscal stimulus measures, are expected to support a more robust recovery in the coming months.

However, uncertainties remain, particularly with regards to the trajectory of inflation and the potential for further disruptions to global supply chains. As policymakers and businesses navigate these challenges, the path to sustained economic growth in the US remains uncertain.

  • GDP grew at a 2.3% pace in the fourth quarter, less than expected

A worker sorts products during Cyber Monday at the Amazon’s fulfillment center in Robbinsville, New Jersey, U.S., November 27, 2023.

    Mike Segar | Reuters

U.S. economic growth slowed a bit more than expected in the final three months of 2024, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

Gross domestic product, a measure of all the goods and services produced across the sprawling U.S. economy during the period, showed that the economy accelerated at a 2.3% annualized pace in the fourth quarter. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting an increase of 2.5% after growth of 3.1% in the third quarter.

The report closes out 2024 on a somewhat downbeat note, though growth held reasonably solid. For the full year, GDP accelerated 2.8%, compared to 2.9% in 2023. Thursday’s release was the first of three estimates the department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis will provide.

Growth held up largely on the backs of consumers who continued to spend briskly despite the ongoing burden of high prices on everything from homes to cars to eggs at the supermarket. While inflation is well off the boil from its mid-2022 40-year high, it remains a burden for households, particularly those on the lower end of the income scale.

Consumer spending rose at a robust 4.2% pace and, as usual, amounted to about two-thirds of all activity. Government spending also provided a boost, accelerating at a 3.2% level.

Trade was a drag on growth in the period, with imports, which subtract from the GDP calculation, off 0.8%. Exports also declined 0.8%. Gross private domestic investment slumped by 5.6%, shaving more than a full percentage point off the topline number.

The resilience of the U.S. economy and the relative deceleration in inflation has allowed the Federal Reserve to assume a patient stance on monetary policy. Though the Fed cut its key interest rate by a full percentage point in the last four months of 2024, officials have indicated that aggressive reductions are unlikely this year.

At the recently concluded Fed meeting, central bankers gave no indication that they are expecting cuts anytime soon, with Chair Jerome Powell insisting that he is in no hurry to ease.

Fed officials have been expressing some concern about whether the moves lower in inflation have stalled. Thursday’s report showed that the so-called chain-weighted price index, which measures prices and accounts for consumers substituting less expensive products for more costly items, increased 2.2% on the quarter, faster than the 1.9% move in Q3 but slightly below the 2.3% estimate.

This is breaking news. Please refresh for updates.

The latest economic data is in, and it appears that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at a 2.3% pace in the fourth quarter of last year. While this is certainly positive news, it falls short of the expected growth rate.

Economists had predicted a higher growth rate for the fourth quarter, so this news may come as a bit of a disappointment to some. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the economy is a complex and ever-changing system, and not every prediction will be spot on.

Despite falling short of expectations, a 2.3% growth rate is still a sign of a healthy economy. It indicates that businesses are expanding, consumers are spending, and overall economic activity is on the rise.

As we move forward into the new year, it will be interesting to see how the economy continues to perform. Will we see a rebound in growth rates, or will there be further challenges ahead? Only time will tell.

  • Dottie Pepper explains pace of play complaint – ‘Been gnawing at me’

Dottie Pepper said the slow pace of play in golf has “been gnawing at me for a while,” and added that she hopes her on-air complaint last weekend serves as a springboard for serious change.

Pace of play once again became a hot topic last Saturday during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where Pepper was CBS Sports’ on-course analyst walking with the final group.

Pepper told The Associated Press that she was notified via text message by CBS Sports colleague Frank Nobilo that the final group made the turn in nearly three hours, prompting her message that has since gone viral.

“You know, Frank,” Pepper said during the broadcast. “I think we’re starting to need a new word to talk about this pace-of-play issue, and it’s ‘respect’ — for your fellow competitors, for the fans, for broadcasts, for all of it. It’s just got to get better.”

Pepper clarified her remarks Sunday during an interview with the AP, saying that she was not directing her comments specifically at the final group.

“It’s been gnawing at me and a lot of people for a while,” Pepper said. “It was not a comment targeted at the final group of a PGA Tour event that CBS was carrying. It was at the general state of the game, down to club play — private or municipal — junior golf, amateur golf, collegiate golf.

“It’s taking away from the opportunity we have for this game. It’s on fire post-COVID, and it’s our darn fault if we don’t do better.”

Saturday’s final group included tournament winner Harris English, Aldrich Potgieter and Andrew Novak, who gave the viewing public a good look at his no-nonsense pace.

But the final round at Torrey Pines took 5 hours, 29 minutes, which was a 10-minute improvement from the previous week at the American Express.

Rory McIlroy echoed some of Pepper’s sentiments, saying that the pace of play problem “has been around forever.”

“I don’t know what the answer is,” McIlroy said Tuesday ahead of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. “There’s a lot of different answers, but not every answer is going to — is not going to make everyone happy. I could say smaller fields. Smaller fields would help pace of play, but that takes away playing opportunities from people and that’s going to piss some people off.”

The USGA has a recommendation — not a rule — on how long it should take to play a shot: 40 seconds, with an extra 10 seconds if a player is first to hit that shot. It’s a policy on the PGA Tour, which has plans for a working group of players to study pace of play.

McIlroy mentioned Major League Baseball’s recent addition of a pitch clock, which has considerably quickened the pace of its games.

“Obviously the MLB introduced a pitch clock at the start of last season, and that seemed to work pretty well,” he said. “You can try to introduce it, but how’s it governed — that’s a very hard thing to do for every single group on the golf course.”

Pepper’s role in golf goes beyond her 17 LPGA victories and two majors, her Solheim Cup legacy and her two decades in broadcasting. She also spent three years on the PGA of America board of directors.

“I love the game too much,” she said. “Let’s take advantage of the heat we have. People are more engaged than they’ve been in a long time. We have TGL. We have influencers. Golf has a little bigger profile than it did before. Let’s not mess it up.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Dottie Pepper, a former professional golfer and current golf analyst, recently shared her frustrations with the pace of play in professional golf tournaments. In a recent interview, Pepper explained that the slow pace of play has “been gnawing at me” and expressed her concerns about the negative impact it has on the sport.

Pepper emphasized the importance of maintaining a good pace of play to keep the game enjoyable for both players and spectators. She noted that slow play not only affects the flow of the game but also impacts the overall experience for fans watching at home or at the course.

As a seasoned professional who has experienced the pressures of competing in high-stakes tournaments, Pepper called for stricter enforcement of pace of play rules and greater accountability for players who consistently lag behind. She believes that addressing this issue is essential for the future of golf and the continued growth of the sport.

Pepper’s candid remarks shed light on a long-standing issue in professional golf and have sparked a conversation about how to improve pace of play moving forward. As the sport continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see if her words inspire change within the golf community.

  • Offspin to pace, and a mountain of runs – Beau Webster’s rise to Test cricket

Offspin to pace, and a mountain of runs – Beau Webster’s rise to Test cricket

Australia started the year by handing a debut to Tasmania allrounder Beau Webster for the final Test against India at the SCG. Although earmarked with significant potential at the youth level, it has been more than a decade-long journey. Here’s a look at his route to Test cricket.

    The early days

Born in the small Tasmania town of Snug, Webster made his first-class debut in February 2014 at the age of 20, playing three games in the latter part of the season. Two years later he made centuries in back-to-back Sheffield Shield matches batting at No. 3 which propelled him into the Australia A side to face India A in Brisbane where he made 11, 30 and 79 across two matches. But it was a brief stay on the fringes of the national set-up.

“I don’t think my defence is the best part of my game, so ultimately I was pretty inconsistent batting in the top order,” he told ESPNcricinfo in an interview in March last year.

Opening the batting against New South Wales in 2018, he scored what was then a career-best 136, but at the end of the first part of the 2019-20 his first-class average stood at 26.78 with the bat and 46.19 with the ball.

    The Covid switch

Just a few weeks before the world was shut down in early 2020, Webster had made a run-a-ball 187 against Western Australia. But it was a change of tack with his bowling during the Covid lockdowns that proved to be a major catalyst in his career. Having watch team-mate Jake Doran snag a wicket with his left-arm mediums in the aforementioned WA game, Webster decided to revive his pace bowling which had been shelved by back problems when he was younger.

“If we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it properly and start from scratch and get your action sorted,” his coach Adam Griffith told him.

It took a little while for pace bowling to bring dividends, but Webster has no doubt about the role it has played in his rise to the Australia side.

“I don’t think I’d be standing here if I was still wheeling out the offspinners,” Webster said. “It’s a part of my game I’ve been really proud to develop in the last four years. It’s taken a lot of hard work early doors from being sore at the start and trying to get my body used to bowling a few overs here and there and then bowling lots and lots of Tasmania.”

It also fitted well with what Tasmania were looking for at the time, as they moved different eras of allrounders. “There was a need for an allrounder after Luke Butterworth and James Faulkner,” Webster said. “We were crying out for an allrounder. I was floating around in the order, settled at No. 6. If I could wheel out some quality medium pace, it would have given the team the ability to play a full-time spinner. I felt like I could impact games with the ball.”

    Run-scoring explosion

The 2020-21 season was a mediocre one with the bat, but the following couple of summers brought glimpses of what was on offer and he signed off the 2022-23 season with an unbeaten 168 against Queensland. It was a sign of things to come.

The 2023-24 Sheffield Shield campaign for Webster will go down as one of the greats: 938 runs at 58.62 and 30 wickets at 30.80. Only Garry Sobers has exceeded both those figures in the same season.

He was back on the national radar and featured for the Prime Minister’s XI against Pakistan in Canberra.

“If someone like [Mitchell] Marsh got injured, he would have to be the next player in,” team-mate Matthew Wade towards the end of 2023-24 season. “He’ll be pushing for that. He’s been huge.”

A County Championship stint with Gloucestershire followed and while he wasn’t prolific with the bat, his bowling continued to develop with 16 wickets at 21.25 in four matches.

    Onto the fringe

Webster began the 2024-25 season with a century against Victoria just around the time Cameron Green was being ruled out for the summer with a back injury. But with Mitchell Marsh secure of his spot and Steven Smith returning to the middle order, there was not yet an opening for Webster.

He featured for Australia A against India A in the two four-day matches he impressed with a pair of unbeaten innings in the two chases and bagged six wickets at the MCG.

Initially called into the Test squad as cover for Marsh in Adelaide and Brisbane, he was officially added to the group for the Boxing Day Test. When Marsh missed out twice in Melbourne, it was form rather than injury that created the opening. And Webster became Test cap 469 for Australia’s men.

Andrew McGlashan is a deputy editor at ESPNcricinfo

Beau Webster’s rise to Test cricket has been nothing short of spectacular. The talented all-rounder, who started his career as a specialist offspinner, has now transformed himself into a formidable pace bowler and a prolific run-scorer.

Webster’s journey from being a spin bowler to a pace bowler is a testament to his hard work and dedication. He realized that he needed to add another dimension to his game in order to compete at the highest level, and he made the switch seamlessly. His ability to swing the ball both ways at a decent pace has made him a valuable asset for his team.

But it’s not just with the ball that Webster has made his mark. His batting has also improved by leaps and bounds, and he has amassed a mountain of runs in domestic cricket. His ability to score quickly and play long innings has caught the attention of selectors, who have rewarded him with a call-up to the national team.

Webster’s rise to Test cricket is a testament to his versatility and adaptability. He has shown that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. As he prepares to make his debut in the longest format of the game, cricket fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the impact he will have on the international stage. Beau Webster is a name to watch out for in the world of cricket.

Archer Aviation Down After Company Doubles Available Shares

Archer Aviation (ACHR) shares fell more than 10% Monday morning after the manufacturer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft backed by United Airlines (UAL) announced it was doubling the number of common stock available and changed requirements for board membership and ownership.

In a regulatory filing, the company reported that in a special meeting of shareholders Dec. 20, investors voted in favor of amending the firm’s certificate of incorporation “to increase the number of authorized shares of the Company’s Class A common stock available for issuance from 700,000,000 to 1,400,000,000.”

Shareholders also voted in favor of issuing Class A Common Stock to carmaker Stellantis (STLA) per an agreement made in August.

Along with those decisions, shareholders approved “limits of the voting, ownership and control of the Company by persons who do not meet the definition of ‘a citizen of the United States,’” as defined by federal law. In addition, Archer agreed to certain limitations on foreign ownership.

Despite today’s losses, shares of Archer Aviation have added more than 60% of their value this year.

Boeing Shares Slide After Deadly South Korea Crash

    1 hr 4 min ago

Boeing (BA) shares fell sharply in early trading Monday after a 737-800 operated by South Korea’s Jeju Air crashed, killing 179 people, in the latest accident involving one of the U.S. company’s planes.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the aircraft rammed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames as it tried to land Sunday in South Korea’s Muan County. All but two of the 181 people on the flight—which had departed from Bangkok, Thailand—were killed.

Boeing shares were down more than 4% in recent trading. Shares of Jeju Air, a budget carrier set up in 2005, closed nearly 9% lower at an all-time low in Seoul trading Monday.

Boeing has been battling a series of problems with the quality of its aircraft, most notably this year with the mid-air blowout of a door plug on an Alaska Airlines (ALK) flight in January. That led the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ground expansion plans for the U.S. aviation giant’s best-selling 737 MAX.

The safety problems, as well as a strike at its West Coast plants that lasted nearly two months and ended in November, led to cost-cutting moves including thousands of layoffs. Boeing subsequently raised billions of dollars to shore up its finances and stem a cash drain.

Tesla Levels to Watch as Investors Await Q4 Deliveries Report

    2 hr 34 min ago

Tesla (TSLA) shares are down in premarket trading after logging two consecutive days of losses, as investors reassess the stock’s extended post-election rally and look ahead to the EV maker’s fourth-quarter deliveries report.

Analysts predict the deliveries number, which is expected to be released on Thursday, to come in around 510,000 units, which would represent 10% growth from the prior quarter and a 5% improvement from a year earlier.

Since the presidential election, Tesla shares have surged more than 70% on expectations that CEO Elon Musk’s ties with President-elect Donald Trump and growing influence in Washington will benefit the automaker’s autonomous driving ambitions.

Tesla shares were down 3% at around $419 in recent premarket trading, after falling nearly 7% over the previous two sessions.

The stock has consolidated within a pennant, a chart pattern that signals a continuation of the current uptrend.

    Source: TradingView.com.

A measured move, which calculates the distance in points of the impulsive move higher that preceded the pennant and adds that amount to the pattern’s top trendline, forecasts a price target of $615.

During pullbacks, investors should watch key support levels on Tesla’s chart around $360 and $300.

The stock market took a hit today as big-tech companies tumbled, causing the Dow and S&P 500 to be on pace for their worst month since April. Investors are feeling the pressure as concerns about inflation, rising interest rates, and slowing economic growth weigh on the market.

Tech giants like Apple, Amazon, and Facebook saw significant losses, dragging down the overall market. The Nasdaq Composite also took a hit as tech stocks struggled to maintain their momentum.

With the Federal Reserve signaling potential interest rate hikes sooner than expected, investors are bracing for a bumpy ride in the coming months. The uncertainty surrounding the global economy and geopolitical tensions are adding to the volatility in the market.

As we head into the final stretch of the month, it remains to be seen if the market can bounce back or if we are in for more turbulence ahead. Stay tuned for updates as the situation continues to unfold.
