  • Anthony Campanile a top candidate for Jaguars coordinator spot; Packers to hire DeMarcus Covington

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers will know soon whether they must replace highly regarded run game coordinator and linebackers coach Anthony Campanile, who has emerged as a leading candidate to become Jacksonville‘s defensive coordinator.

Two sources said Campanile’s chances of landing the job have risen considerably since he interviewed with new head coach Liam Coen on Tuesday. He is one of four candidates known to have interviewed for the job, one of whom — Las Vegas assistant Patrick Graham — has dropped out.

The job isn’t Campanile’s yet, and if offered the job, he would have to decide if it’s a good career move.

Packers linebackers coach and running game coordinator Anthony Campanile works with rookie Edgerrin Cooper during training camp in 2024.

Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and Campanile are good friends, and it’s likely Campanile would be a candidate for the Packers’ defensive coordinator position if Hafley were able to land a head coaching job. Hafley interviewed for the New York Jets job this offseason and should be in heavy demand next year if the Packers’ defense plays like it did the second half of the season.

Campanile was a key hire for Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and Hafley last year and played a big role in helping Hafley turn the culture around on defense. The high-energy Campanile was key in developing rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper into a starter and grooming veteran Quay Walker for a vital role in the defense.

Cooper was twice named NFC Defensive Rookie of the Week and NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month in December/January and Walker improved considerably after a slow start playing a new scheme in his third season. Veteran Eric Wilson also thrived in the middle when Walker was sidelined with an ankle injury and Isaiah McDuffie played multiple positions throughout the year.

Campanile will be a hard assistant to replace, especially given the competition among new head coaches trying to fill out their staffs. However, Hafley brought linebackers coach Sean Duggan with him from Boston College, and after spending a year assisting Campanile, he would be a solid replacement.

DeMarcus Covington will coach the defensive line

A move LaFleur is expected to make with his staff is hiring New England Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington, who would replace fired defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich, a source confirmed. A contract hasn’t been signed and it might be a while before the move is announced, the source said.

Covington served as a coaching assistant (2017-19), outside linebackers (2019) and defensive line coach (2020-’23) under former Patriots coach Bill Belichick and was promoted to defensive coordinator by head coach Jerod Mayo at the start of last season.

ESPN.com was first to report Covington’s impending hiring.

Mayo was fired after just one season and his replacement, Mike Vrabel, did not retain Covington.

The Patriots’ defense was a disappointment last year, allowing 343.4 yards a game, which ranked 22nd in the NFL. Under Belichick the previous year, the defense ranked seventh. The defense dropped from 13th to 22nd in points allowed as well.

The Patriots ranked last in the NFL in sacks per pass attempt and tied for 26th in third-down efficiency.

During Belichick’s years in charge, the Patriots employed multiple fronts and schemes and so it shouldn’t be hard for Covington to adapt to Hafley’s 4-3 zone scheme.

Under Rebrovich, the Packers ranked 10th in sacks per pass attempt, but Hafley had to employ gimmicks to help get pressure on the quarterback. His preference is to rush four so he can deploy seven defenders against the pass.

The Packers’ front four did not provide as many sacks as Hafley hoped. The group accounted for 32½ of the team’s 45 sacks with end Rashan Gary leading the group with 7½. Covington’s charge will be to get more out of the unit’s best pass rushers without sacrificing the solid run defense it provided.

Covington interviewed for the Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator position but lost out to Lou Anarumo.

So far, LaFleur has made only a handful of moves with his staff, most of which have not been announced.

In addition to firing Rebrovich, he extended the contract of special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia and hired Luke Getsy as a senior offensive assistant, sources told the Journal Sentinel on Monday.

One of the sources said that LaFleur was expected to hire offensive assistant Sean Mannion to replace retired quarterbacks coach Tom Clements, but that a deal had not been finalized.

Campanile has a strong track record of success in the NFL, having worked with some of the league’s top defenses. His experience and expertise make him a prime candidate to lead the Jaguars defense to new heights.

Long-time quarterbacks coach Tom Clements is retiring from football following the 2024 season, which opened the position in Green Bay.

Mannion, 32, was added to the Packers coaching staff as a first-time assistant helping in the quarterback room ahead of the 2024 season.

The Bears turned over their coaching staff following the 2024 season, and now Mannion has a promotion to quarterbacks coach in Green Bay.

The Packers also hired former Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington as the new defensive line coach, so the major openings on LaFleur’s staff have now been filled.

The Green Bay Packers have announced that former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion will be promoted to quarterbacks coach for the upcoming season. Mannion, who played for the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams, will bring his expertise and experience to help develop the Packers’ quarterbacks.

The Green Bay Packers are hiring long-time New England Patriots assistant coach DeMarcus Covington as the team’s new defensive line coach, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Matt LaFleur and the Packers moved on from defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich following a disappointing 2024 season from the defensive front.

Covington, who is only 35 years old, was the defensive coordinator for the Patriots in 2024. He arrived in New England as a coaching assistant on Bill Belichick’s staff in 2017, rose to outside linebackers coach in 2019 and transitioned to defensive line coach in 2020. He spent four years (2020-23) in the position before being promoted to defensive coordinator under coach Jerod Mayo.

Overall, Covington spent eight years on the Patriots coaching staff and was a member of the team that won Super Bowl LIII.

Before joining the Patriots, Covington — a collegiate wide receiver at Samford — spent five seasons as a coaching assistant at the college level, including as the defensive line coach at UT-Martin in 2015 and the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Eastern Illinois in 2016.

In Green Bay, Covington will be tasked with getting more disruptive production out of a defensive front featuring Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt and Lukas Van Ness in 2025. It’s certainly possible general manager Brian Gutekunst will be adding more talent to the group via free agency or the draft.

  • Former Patriots DC lands new job with Green Bay Packers

As Mike Vrabel’s staff takes shape, former Patriots assistants are moving on.

According to ESPN, the Green Bay Packers are hiring DeMarcus Covington to be their defensive line coach. Last season was Covington’s first as the Patriots defensive coordinator.

This offseason, Covington interviewed with the Cincinnati Bengals for their defensive coordinator job. Now, he heads to Green Bay to work with Packers defensive play caller Jeff Hafley, who previously was Boston College’s head coach.

Covington was hired by Bill Belichick in 2017 as a coaching assistant. He was discovered while coaching at Eastern Illinois. Covington was promoted to linebackers coach in 2019. The next year, he was moved to coach defensive tackles and held that role from 2020-2023.

Covington’s work as an assistant garnered praise from his players and quickly made him a defensive coordinator candidate. In 2023, he interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers for their vacant defensive playcaller jobs.

Covington has also been routinely on the NFL Network’s list of future NFL head coaches.

“Definitely thankful for that, but for me, it’s really just about being right here. Being planted where my feet are right here,” Covington said. “Trying to help this football team win games, because that’s where it starts. You’ve gotta win games to even be in that position. So win games, do my job here, do it to the best of my ability, then the rest of that will come.

“So I’m not really focused on that at the moment. Excited to be on that list, but really more excited about trying to help this football team win football games. Then the future will take care of itself.”

It wasn’t a surprise when Jerod Mayo hired him to be his defensive coordinator last season. The Patriots defense finished 22nd in the NFL in scoring and total defense.

Vrabel has completely revamped the Patriots defensive staff as no positional assistants will return in 2025. Terrell Williams takes over as the team’s new defensive coordinator.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur expressed his excitement about bringing Patricia on board, stating that he believes Patricia’s experience and knowledge will be invaluable to the team.

With their new defensive assistant in place, the Packers are looking to strengthen their defense and make a run at the Super Bowl next season. Packers fans can look forward to seeing what Patricia brings to the table and how he helps improve the team’s performance on the field.

  • Door swings open for Packers to undo costly Quinyon Mitchell mistake

The Green Bay Packers may not have admitted it, but they desperately needed cornerback help last offseason. The Philadelphia Eagles agreed and made sure to land their top targets ahead of the Packers.

They selected Quinyon Mitchell three selections before Green Bay hit the clock in the first round. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman then traded one spot ahead of the Packers to land Cooper DeJean. We may never know whether the Packers would’ve drafted DeJean, but their decision to immediately trade down was interesting, to say the least.

Mitchell and DeJean made the PFWA All-Rookie Team and are finalists for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

While Mitchell went ahead of Green Bay, there was nothing stopping general manager Brian Gutekunst from trading ahead of Philadelphia in a reverse of what happened a day later. It was no secret that the Eagles needed cornerback help, and they made it their priority to find upgrades.

A year later, the Super Bowl-bound Eagles have an elite secondary, while the Packers’ glaring cornerback issue has become even more urgent. Eric Stokes hits free agency after a disappointing season, while Jaire Alexander faces an uncertain future in Green Bay.

Fortunately, the Packers could fix that problem in this year’s draft.

Packers should pay attention as Senior Bowl star draws Quinyon Mitchell comparisons

It’s Senior Bowl week, and the Packers love drafting players who perform well in Mobile, Alabama. Mitchell began to skyrocket his draft stock by turning heads at the Senior Bowl, and ESPN’s Jordan Reid expects something similar from Florida State cornerback Azareye’h Thomas.

“Thomas will have a Quinyon Mitchell-like week that will result in his draft stock rising into the top-20 range,” predicts Reid. “He has plenty of length at 6-foot-2, 198 pounds, and Thomas’ ability as a true press man corner will shine in one-on-one drills.”

There’s a lot to love about Thomas’ potential. He was a lockdown corner at Florida State — quarterbacks were scared to throw his way. According to Pro Football Focus, he only faced 33 targets in his coverage this year, giving up just 17 completions for 141 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. That’s a passer rating of 50.2.

As Reid notes, Thomas has great length and has experience playing a lot of press coverage. Jeff Hafley used more zone than expected this season, but if the Packers improve their pass rush and add a corner like Thomas, he could start lining up with more press-man looks.

Participating in the Senior Bowl is almost a prerequisite for getting drafted by the Packers.

Last year, they selected six Senior Bowl participants, including several high picks: Jordan Morgan, Javon Bullard, MarShawn Lloyd, Evan Williams, Kitan Oladapo, and Michael Pratt.

It was a similar story in 2023. Luke Musgrave, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Karl Brooks, and Grant Dubose played in front of Packers scouts in Mobile.

Thomas might not become a finalist for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year as Mitchell has. That would place unfair expectations on him. But if he tests well and puts in a strong Senior Bowl performance, he could secure a spot high on the Packers’ draft board.

    More Packers news and analysis

The Green Bay Packers have been given a second chance to rectify their costly mistake in the 2021 NFL Draft. With the recent news that Quinyon Mitchell, the player they selected in the fourth round, has been ruled ineligible to play due to academic issues, the door has swung open for the Packers to make a different move.

This unexpected turn of events has forced the Packers to reassess their draft strategy and potentially make a different selection to fill the void left by Mitchell. With training camp quickly approaching, the team must act swiftly to address this sudden setback.

While losing a draft pick due to off-field issues is never ideal, the Packers now have an opportunity to make a more informed decision and avoid repeating the same mistake. The pressure is on for the team to make the most of this second chance and find a player who can contribute positively to their roster.

As the Packers regroup and move forward, all eyes will be on how they handle this unexpected turn of events and whether they can turn this negative situation into a positive outcome for the team. Only time will tell if the door swinging open for the Packers will lead to a better outcome in the end.

  • Packers Get Two Receivers, Two Corners in PFF Mock Draft

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers’ major personnel concerns at cornerback and receiver were addressed in a new seven-round mock draft by Pro Football Focus.

In a Packers-only mock draft, Josh Liskiewitz hammered two areas of need.

The need at cornerback was apparent at this time last year. General manager Brian Gutekunst failed to address it, though. While the pass defense exceeded expectations, cornerback Jaire Alexander probably won’t return after another injury-plagued season and former 2021 first-round pick Eric Stokes will join Robert Rochell and Corey Ballentine in free agency.

The need at receiver is a surprise based on the expectations from 12 months ago. However, none of Green Bay’s young receivers stepped to the forefront. Making matters worse, Christian Watson will probably miss the first half of the season following a torn ACL and Romeo Doubs suffered two concussions during the second half of the season. Plus, Watson and Doubs will be free agents after the 2025 season.

In the first round, Liskiewitz selected Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison. He had six interceptions to earn Freshman All-American in 2022 and added three more interceptions in 2023. He had zero interceptions in 2024, a season cut short by a hip injury that required surgery.

Morrison allowed a career completion rate of just 45.7 percent.

“Over 499 coverage snaps across the past two seasons, he was targeted 87 times, allowing just 39 receptions while recording four interceptions and forcing 17 incompletions,” Liskiewitz wrote.

His dad played in the NFL.

“My dad was always saying, ‘I’m not your friend. I’m here to push you,’” Morrison said.

It was back to cornerback in the third round with Kansas’ Mello Dotson, who earned some All-American honors in 2024. He had five interceptions including two pick-sixes in 2024 and four interceptions and two pick-sixes in 2023. He had a total of 27 passes defensed during those two seasons.

“Doston brings NFL-caliber size at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, along with impressive ball production during his time at Kansas,” Liskiewitz wrote.

The Packers have made a living over the years with their second-round receivers. In this mock, the Packers used a second-rounder on Utah State’s Jalen Royals.

“Royals presents another value option for Green Bay, as a foot injury ended his 2024 season in Week 8,” Liskiewitz wrote. “Known for his quickness and agility, Royals excels as a precise route-runner and an after-catch threat.”

Royals caught 71 passes for 1,080 yards and led the conference with 15 touchdown catches in 2023. Seven of those touchdowns covered at least 50 yards, most in the nation. In seven games in 2024, he caught 55 passes for 834 yards and six scores. His 119.1 yards per game was just a half-yard from being No. 1 in the nation.

Royals, who hopes to someday swap jerseys with Davante Adams, measured 5-foot-11 3/8 and 210 pounds at the Senior Bowl.

“I want to show (scouts) I can compete at the highest level,” he told The Draft Network’s Justin Melo before the Senior Bowl. “Coming from a G5 [Group of 5] school, I wasn’t playing against the best competition college football has to offer on a weekly basis, especially compared to the SEC or Big Ten. I’m definitely going to Mobile with a chip on my shoulder.”

In the seventh round, the choice was Louisville receiver Ja’Corey Brooks. After catching 57 passes in three seasons at Alabama, Brooks caught 61 passes for 1,013 yards and nine touchdowns during his lone season at Louisville, with five games of 100-plus yards.

Brooks, who measured 6-foot-1 1/2 and 191 pounds at the Shrine Bowl, caught 16-of-23 contested-catch opportunities and broke 10 tackles after the catch but also dropped too many passes (seven; 10.3 percent).

The other Day 3 picks were used on a running back, an Ohio State center and a Miami edge defender. The mock did not include a projected seventh-round compensatory pick for losing Yosh Nijman in free agency last offseason.

In a recent PFF mock draft, the Green Bay Packers addressed key needs by selecting two wide receivers and two cornerbacks.

With their first-round pick, the Packers selected dynamic wide receiver Chris Olave out of Ohio State. Olave is known for his speed, route running, and big-play ability, making him a perfect fit for Green Bay’s offense.

In the second round, the Packers added another weapon for Aaron Rodgers in wide receiver Jahan Dotson from Penn State. Dotson is a versatile playmaker who can contribute both in the slot and on the outside, giving the Packers even more options in the passing game.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Packers addressed their need for cornerback depth by selecting Kaiir Elam out of Florida in the third round. Elam is a physical and instinctive cornerback who has the potential to develop into a starter in the NFL.

In the fourth round, the Packers added another cornerback in Tariq Castro-Fields from Penn State. Castro-Fields has the size and athleticism to excel in man coverage and could provide valuable depth in Green Bay’s secondary.

Overall, the Packers made strategic moves in the draft to bolster their receiving corps and add depth at cornerback, setting themselves up for success in the upcoming season.

How 2 Yoopers made a Packers movie in Door County

Two die-hard Green Bay Packers fans from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, also known as Yoopers, recently took their love for the team to the next level by creating a Packers-themed movie in Door County, Wisconsin.

The duo, who have been friends since childhood, came up with the idea for the film during a visit to Lambeau Field. Inspired by the rich history and traditions of the Packers, they decided to combine their passion for filmmaking with their love of the team.

Despite having no prior experience in movie production, the Yoopers dove headfirst into the project, enlisting the help of friends and family to bring their vision to life. They scouted locations in Door County that would serve as the backdrop for the film, including iconic spots like Cave Point and Sister Bay.

The movie, titled “Cheeseheads: A Packers Tale,” follows the fictional journey of a group of die-hard Packers fans as they embark on a road trip to Lambeau Field for a crucial game against their arch-rivals. Along the way, they encounter hilarious mishaps, heartwarming moments, and a few surprises that test their loyalty to the team.

Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks during production, the Yoopers remained determined to see their project through to completion. After months of hard work, late nights, and countless cups of coffee, they finally premiered the film to a small group of friends and family in Door County.

The movie was met with rave reviews, with many praising the Yoopers for their creativity, dedication, and unwavering love for the Packers. The duo has since submitted the film to several film festivals and are hopeful that it will reach a wider audience in the near future.

For these two Yoopers, creating a Packers movie in Door County was not just a passion project – it was a labor of love that brought together their shared love for the team and their mutual desire to create something truly unique and special. And who knows, maybe one day their film will be screened at Lambeau Field, fulfilling a dream that started with a simple visit to the hallowed grounds of the Green Bay Packers.
