  • Phillies blockbuster trade idea would land Padres $46 million bullpen All-Star

The Philadelphia Phillies were disappointed by winning just one playoff game against the New York Mets this past season. But it’s not clear if they’ve done enough to improve their chances of a deeper run in 2025.

The Phillies will return with veteran stars like Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler and Trea Turner leading the team. Their most significant offseason moves to date include the addition of oft-injured pitchers Jordan Romano and Jesús Luzardo, while setup man Jeff Hoffman has departed for a new deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.

As a result, there could be more work to be done with the pitching staff a particular area of need. And the Phillies might turn to a National League rival for a star addition, according to FanSided’s Michael Fisher.

“But after losing key pieces Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez to free agency, the Phillies’ current late-inning options have some question marks,” Fisher wrote. “That’s where the San Diego Padres and closer Robert Suarez come in.”

With an ongoing lawsuit over control of the club looming over them, the Padres could be looking to cut payroll for 2025 or at least free themselves of large financial commitments moving forward. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand has identified Suarez as a “logical” trade chip, given the team’s other closer options and the two-year, $16 million club option he has ahead after signing a five-year, $46 million deal in 2022.

Suarez should intrigue plenty of teams, as he’s coming off of a 2.77 ERA, 36-save All-Star campaign with the Padres in 2024.

All of this together makes Suarez an intriguing trade fit for the Phillies this winter.

“The Phillies like high velocity coming out of the bullpen, and with Suarez relying on his 99.1 mph four-seamer 71 percent of the time, he’d fit right in,” Fisher added. “Suarez will turn 34 before Opening Day, but his contract structure, with the two-year, $16 million option after the 2025 season, would give the Phillies some flexibility. They could cut bait after the season or extend the 2024 All-Star through his age-36 season, for a rather affordable $8 million per year.”

Perhaps the main sticking point in a potential deal to acquire Suarez would be what president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski will be willing to give up for him. Top prospects like Andrew Painter and Aiden Miller would certainly be off limits. But if the two teams can agree on some lesser prospective pieces and the Phillies feel like they can carve out the payroll room for Suarez, a trade would make sense.

More MLB: Blue Jays four-time All-Star expected to reject $400 million offer to stay

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly exploring a blockbuster trade that would bring Padres $46 million bullpen All-Star, Kirby Yates, to the City of Brotherly Love. This move would surely bolster the Phillies’ bullpen and make them instant contenders in the competitive NL East.

Yates, who has been lights out for the Padres over the past few seasons, would provide much-needed stability and experience to the Phillies’ relief corps. With a career ERA of 2.59 and an impressive 11.7 K/9 rate, Yates would give the Phillies a reliable closer to shut down games in the late innings.

In return, the Padres would likely receive a package of top prospects and/or major league talent to help bolster their roster for the future. While it may be a tough decision to part ways with such a valuable asset, the Padres could benefit from adding young, controllable talent to their roster.

Overall, this potential trade would be a win-win for both teams, as the Phillies would significantly improve their bullpen and the Padres would add valuable pieces for the future. Keep an eye on this developing story as the trade deadline approaches.

  • Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade

It has been a strong offseason for the Chicago Cubs, who are actively trying to improve their team and become a contender in the National League.

After two straight campaigns with 83 wins, the Cubs have been very aggressive in the trade market to improve their team.

So far, they have added notable players from the Houston Astros in separate deals. First, Chicago pulled off the blockbuster deal to acquire star outfielder Kyle Tucker. Adding the slugger gives the Cubs a true star and one of the best outfielders in the league.

Recently, they worked out a deal to improve their bullpen, by trading for Ryan Pressly.

Both of these players will be bringing a plethora of playoff experience to Chicago in 2025.

Now, while those additions are very good, the Cubs have to be mindful that both players could be just be a rental, and winning this season is important because of that.

While the roster has certainly improved, being able to beat a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers in a playoff series might be challenging.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade that would send San Diego Padres ace Michael King to the Cubs in exchange for Kevin Alcántara and Javier Assad.

“The prize for San Diego in this deal would be Alcántara. The 22-year-old’s hit tool is suspect, but he checks boxes for power, speed, and defensive ability. He’s also ready to play in the majors.”

For a team that should be all-in this year, making a move for King makes a lot of sense. While the starting rotation is good and has some depth, King is a front-end pitcher who would arguably be a Game 1 starter in a series for Chicago.

Pairing him at the top of the rotation with Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele would give the Cubs a trio that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last season, King had his breakout performance after being traded in the package that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. The right-hander totaled a 13-9 record, 2.95 ERA, and 4.2 WAR.

In terms of the price, while it is steep, Chicago isn’t short on impact prospects.

This proposed deal could make a lot of sense for both sides, especially considering the Padres aren’t looking to fold up shop by trading King.

Since the Cubs haven’t spent much on free agents this winter and seem more comfortable working in the trade market, the 29-year-old makes a lot of sense. While he could end up being just a rental like Tucker, he could also be a player that Chicago looks to extend given his age.

Breaking News: Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade

In a shocking turn of events, the Chicago Cubs have reportedly acquired San Diego Padres star pitcher in a proposed blockbuster trade. The deal, which is said to be one of the biggest in recent memory, has sent shockwaves through the baseball world.

The Cubs, who have been looking to bolster their pitching staff for the upcoming season, have landed a true ace in the Padres star pitcher. Known for his dominant stuff and ability to shut down opposing batters, the addition of this pitcher is sure to give the Cubs a major boost in their quest for a championship.

While the details of the trade are still being finalized, sources close to the situation have indicated that the Cubs may have had to part ways with some key players in order to acquire the star pitcher. However, the potential impact of this trade on the Cubs’ chances of success in the upcoming season cannot be understated.

Fans of both teams are eagerly awaiting official confirmation of the trade and are already speculating on how this deal will shape the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Mets in talks with Padres about Dylan Cease trade

The Mets showed they don’t like long-term deals for pitchers when they didn’t pursue Max Fried or Corbin Burnes, but they’ve been trying for Padres rental ace Dylan Cease (and presumably would also consider rotation mate Michael King).

The Cubs also are involved. But while their prospect list is ranked higher, with highly regarded 3B prospect Matt Shaw understandably off limits in rental deals, the Padres may prefer the Mets’ list, including Brandon Sproat, Jett Williams and Luisangel Acuña.

The Padres will listen on just about all (except Manny Machado or Fernando Tatis Jr.), so that likely does include King, also free after 2025.

If the Padres trade either starter, they will consider Nick Pivetta or Jack Flaherty.

Flaherty is a surprise in his continuing availability since he’s only 29, has no qualifying offer attached, was 13-7 with a 3.18 ERA in 2024 and had big postseason starts against the Mets and Yankees.

Pivetta, despite the QO, has interest from 10 teams, including the Jays, who’re focusing on pitching (while also trying to extend superstar Vladimir Guerrero). Flaherty’s former Tigers team is interested in him, while the Giants may sign more pitching.

Max Scherzer told the Jays he’d happily consider them if they look like a pennant contender following their 74-win campaign, and after they signed Anthony Santander, Scherzer was good to his word, agreeing at $15.5M for 2025.

The Mets offered old favorite Mark Canha a non-guaranteed deal. It’s been a slow market for position players over 32, but Canha, a versatile guy with power who’s posted an above-average OPS-plus seven years running, could help many.

J.D. Martinez, a big influence in the Mets’ winning clubhouse, is aiming to play in 2025.

The Mets haven’t yet strongly pursued Jose Iglesias, who belongs in Queens. OMG, does he ever!

According to sources, the New York Mets are currently in talks with the San Diego Padres about a potential trade involving pitcher Dylan Cease. The 25-year-old right-hander has shown promise in his young career, with a fastball that can reach the upper 90s and a solid repertoire of off-speed pitches.

The Mets, who are looking to bolster their pitching staff for a playoff push, see Cease as a potential valuable addition to their rotation. Meanwhile, the Padres are looking to add depth to their lineup and may be interested in some of the Mets’ prospects in return.

While nothing is set in stone yet, this potential trade could shake up both teams’ rosters and provide a boost for each team as they look to make a push for the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Padres turmoil could create perfect trade opportunity for Detroit

While the Detroit Tigers’ reliance on bullpen games was a fun anecdote in their Cinderella run to the ALDS in 2024, the starting rotation is something they need to address going into 2025.

Right now, the Tigers’ starting rotation for 2025 consists of Tarik Skubal, Alex Cobb, Reese Olson and Jackson Jobe. While that group certainly has potential, it hardly sounds like a rotation capable of making an exceptionally deep postseason run, which, presumably, is the Tigers’ goal in 2025. Skubal is Skubal, and Olson has No. 2 starter potential as long as his shoulder injury from last season hasn’t diminished his effectiveness in the long term. But Cobb has to miraculously stay healthy at the age of 37 after injuries limited him to just three appearances last season. Jobe still has to earn a rotation spot this spring.

As it stands now, the fifth starter would likely be Casey Mize or Keider Montero. Mize is capable of filling the role, but Detroit’s choice to decline his club option for 2025 doesn’t exactly scream confidence in his ability to bounce back this season. Montero is talented and had a promising rookie season, but he is still relatively unproven.

All of this is to say that the Tigers could – and should – look to strengthen their pitching staff before Sspring training begins. We know they likely won’t do it via free agency, and their options at this point would be limited if they did. But a trade could still be worth exploring, especially if that trade is for San Diego Padres right-hander Michael King.

Tigers Rumors: Padres turmoil could create perfect trade opportunity for Detroit

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required) reported this week that King is “among the starting pitchers who remain in play” for the Padres as part of ongoing trade talks. King, whom the Padres received from the New York Yankees as part of the Juan Soto trade last offseason, had spent much of his career bouncing between the bullpen and the starting rotation. In San Diego, however, he became a bonafide starter and recorded a 2.95 ERA, a 27.7% strikeout rate and an 8.7% walk rate over 31 appearances (30 starts) last season. He also notched a 3.75 ERA over 12 postseason innings.

While King doesn’t have a lengthy track record of starting experience, he would be a tremendous add to the Tigers’ rotation. He and the Padres failed to reach an agreement before the arbitration deadline, but he filed at $8 million and could therefore be an affordable, short-term option for the Tigers in a trade. And he won’t cost much as a rental. The Tigers have a surplus of assets they can part with, and can maybe even view King as an extension candidate.

Whether anything comes of the trade rumors involving King remains to be seen; but with pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training in just a few weeks, the Tigers are running out of time to shore up their rotation for Opening Day and should be dialed in on the trade market for help on that front.

More Tigers content from Motor City Bengals

The San Diego Padres have been in the headlines recently for all the wrong reasons, with reports of discord and turmoil within the organization. This could potentially create a perfect trade opportunity for the Detroit Tigers.

With key players reportedly unhappy and potential rifts within the team, the Padres may be looking to shake things up and make some changes. This could open the door for the Tigers to swoop in and make a trade that could benefit both teams.

The Tigers have a young, talented roster that could benefit from adding a proven player or two from the Padres. With the Padres potentially looking to offload some players, the Tigers could find themselves in a position to make a trade that could help strengthen their team for the future.

In the midst of the Padres’ turmoil, the Tigers could capitalize on the situation and make a move that could benefit both teams in the long run. Keep an eye on these two teams as the trade deadline approaches, as a deal between them could be in the works.

  • Detroit Tigers Potential Pursuit of Padres Starting Pitcher ‘Seems Doubtful’

It has been a mediocre offseason so far for the Detroit Tigers, who haven’t quite made the splash some had been hoping for coming in.

After an incredible run in 2024, expectations for the Tigers are very different going into 2025. The team was able to snap a lengthy playoff drought last year and was one win shy of making it to the ALCS.

While the team was quite good at times this past campaign, they did have some notable flaws in a couple of areas.

Detroit made some moves that could be considered upgrades by bringing in Gleyber Torres and Alex Cobb, but just how much of a boost those two will provide is yet to be determined.

However, they still seem to be linked to players like Alex Bregman and Jack Flaherty, both of which would be good additions. As seen in the postseason last year, adding another front end starter is likely needed if they are going to truly compete with a team like the New York Yankees in a seven-game series.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently highlighted potential landing spots for San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King. He mentioned the Tigers as a potential spot but spoke about it being doubtful they would trade away prospects for a player who would likely be just a rental.

“But would they pay a hefty price for a rental while they’re still so early in their contention cycle? It seems doubtful. And while they could extend King, the guys who need that sort of attention are [Tarik] Skubal and Riley Greene.”

Due to the Padres looking to shed salary and get under the luxury tax threshold, it seems like pretty much any player is available this offseason.

As an upcoming free agent, trying to move King makes sense for a San Diego team that likely won’t be able to afford the lucrative contract that will be coming his way next year.

For the Tigers, while King would be a massive upgrade and a great pitcher paired with Tarik Skubal, pursuing an impending free agent feels risky for them.

Detroit certainly has the type of prospects to be able to get a deal done with multiple guys in the Top 100, but moving them doesn’t seem to be something they’d be interested in doing.

The elephant in the room for the Tigers is also Skubal’s contract. The reigning American League Cy Young is under team control for two more seasons, making winning with him now quite important. However, despite being a Scott Boras client, signing him to an extension doesn’t seem impossible.

Even though the right-hander would be a great addition, it does seem unlikely at this point. But, depending on how the season is going, King could be a name to watch at the trade deadline if he hasn’t been moved already.

The Detroit Tigers Potential Pursuit of Padres Starting Pitcher ‘Seems Doubtful’

The Detroit Tigers have been rumored to be interested in acquiring a starting pitcher from the San Diego Padres as they look to bolster their rotation for the upcoming season. However, recent reports suggest that a potential pursuit of Padres starting pitcher may not be as likely as initially thought.

According to sources close to the situation, the Padres are not actively shopping their starting pitchers and are more focused on making additions to their lineup. This could make it difficult for the Tigers to strike a deal for a pitcher like Joe Musgrove or Chris Paddack, who have been mentioned as potential targets.

Additionally, the Tigers may not have the necessary assets to entice the Padres into making a trade. With a thin farm system and limited payroll flexibility, Detroit may struggle to put together a package that would be appealing to San Diego.

While the Tigers could still explore other options on the trade market or in free agency, their pursuit of a Padres starting pitcher seems doubtful at this time. Fans will have to wait and see how the offseason unfolds and if Detroit can find a way to improve their rotation in other ways.

  • Padres Lose Ha-Seong Kim to AL Contender as Brutal Offseason Continues

The San Diego Padres have lost another key free agent, as infielder Ha-Seong Kim has signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Kim is signing a $29 million deal with an opt-out after the first season, per Passan.

More news: Padres Sign All-Star Catcher in First Major League Signing of Offseason

Kim is yet another free agent to leave the Padres in a brutal offseason for San Diego. Jurickson Profar signed with the Atlanta Braves despite interest in returning to San Diego. He mentioned the ongoing ownership lawsuit as a reason he’s not back.

“Obviously the Padres have some issue with the ownership and all that,” Profar said in a video call with the Atlanta media. “It was difficult to go back (to San Diego), but [Braves general manager] Alex [Anthopoulous] showed a lot, a lot of interest in me and I loved that. He gave me a lot of confidence to come to a team and to perform. People show confidence like that, it gives you a boost.”

All-Star reliever Tanner Scott left the Padres for the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers, and hasn’t stop talking about how happy he is to be in L.A.

Now, Kim is officially gone from San Diego, even though just two years ago he appeared to be a future cornerstone of the roster.

    This story will be updated…

The San Diego Padres have suffered another blow in what has been a brutal offseason, as they have lost infielder Ha-Seong Kim to an American League contender.

Kim, who signed with the Padres last offseason, was a key part of their infield depth and provided versatility with his ability to play multiple positions. However, it has been reported that he has been traded to an AL contender in exchange for prospects, leaving the Padres with a hole to fill in their infield.

This news comes on the heels of the Padres missing out on several free agent targets and dealing with injuries to key players. Fans are understandably frustrated with the team’s inability to make significant moves to improve their roster, especially as they try to compete in a tough NL West division.

As the Padres continue to struggle this offseason, it remains to be seen if they can turn things around before the start of the season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Elias Díaz, Padres agree on free-agent contract (source)

The Padres and catcher Elias Díaz are in agreement on a one-year deal, a source told MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell on Tuesday. The club has not confirmed the deal, which is pending a physical.

Díaz ended last season with San Diego after being released by the Rockies in August. He batted .190 with a .721 OPS over 21 at-bats and 12 games with the Padres.

The 34-year-old Díaz will be the first player the Padres have brought in on a Major League deal this offseason and gives the club more depth behind the plate, something it needed after Kyle Higashioka signed a two-year contract with the Rangers in December.

A 10-year veteran, Díaz owns a career .251/.304/.388 slash line and an 82 OPS+. However, he did hit 18 home runs for Colorado in 2021. He made his first All-Star team two years later and earned the game’s MVP honors.

Breaking News: Elias Díaz, Padres agree on free-agent contract

The San Diego Padres have made a major move in the offseason, as they have reportedly agreed to a free-agent contract with catcher Elias Díaz. The deal is said to be worth $4 million over one year, according to sources close to the negotiations.

Díaz, 31, is coming off a solid season with the Colorado Rockies, where he hit .222 with 18 home runs and 47 RBIs in 113 games. Known for his strong defensive skills behind the plate, Díaz will provide a valuable addition to the Padres’ lineup.

The signing of Díaz is seen as a key move for the Padres, who are looking to strengthen their roster in order to compete for a playoff spot in the highly competitive National League West division.

  • Padres re-sign Elías Díaz as first free agent of offseason – San Diego Union-Tribune

The Padres on Tuesday made their first free-agent addition of the offseason, agreeing to a reunion with Elías Díaz, the Union-Tribune confirmed.

Miami-based El Extrabase reported on social media that the deal was for $3.5 million for one year.

Díaz also received a mutual option for 2026.

An All-Star Game MVP in 2023, Díaz caught on with the Padres in September after the Rockies released him toward the end of an injury-plagued 2024.

Díaz hit .190/.292/.429   with one homer and three RBIs in 12 games down the stretch. He ultimately replaced Luis Campusano as the No. 2 catcher behind Kyle Higashioka and appeared in one postseason game.

Both Higashioka and Díaz filed for free agency, but Higashioka signed a two-year, $13.5 million deal with the Rangers.

The 34-year-old Díaz is returning to compete with the 26-year-old Campusano — who was optioned to Triple-A El Paso late in the year and left off the postseason roster — for the starting job behind the plate.

Martín Maldonado, 38, was also signed to a minor league deal to add to the catching competition this spring.

Díaz represents the Padres’ first free agent signing this offseason.

In contrast, Jurickson Profar (Braves), Tanner Scott (Dodgers), Donovan Solano (Mariners) and Martín Pérez (White Sox) have followed Higashioka out the door to new teams, while Ha-Seong Kim, David Peralta and Nick Ahmed remain free agents.

The Padres’ only other addition to the 40-man roster this offseason is trading for reliever Ron Marinaccio last week as a depth piece.

Díaz is a .251/.304/.388 hitter across 10 big-league seasons. He hit a career-high 18 home runs in 2021 with the Rockies and paired 14 homers and 72 RBIs with a .267/.316/.409 batting line with the Rockies as an All-Star 2023.

Díaz was hitting .270/.315/.378 with six homers and 39 RBIs in 96 games last year when he was released late in the final year of a three-year, $14.5 million contract as the Rockies committed to giving prospect Drew Romo a look behind the plate.

Staff writer Kevin Acee contributed to this report.

The San Diego Padres wasted no time in making their first move of the offseason, re-signing catcher Elías Díaz to a multi-year contract. The 31-year-old Venezuelan had a solid season in 2021, hitting .238 with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs in 112 games.

Díaz’s strong defensive skills and leadership behind the plate were key factors in the Padres’ decision to bring him back for another season. With his experience and familiarity with the pitching staff, Díaz will continue to be an important asset for the team as they look to make a deep playoff run in 2022.

General Manager A.J. Preller expressed his excitement about re-signing Díaz, stating, “We are thrilled to have Elías back in a Padres uniform. His work ethic, professionalism, and ability to handle our pitching staff were all factors in bringing him back. We believe he will continue to be a valuable contributor to our team moving forward.”

Fans can expect to see Díaz behind the plate once again next season, as the Padres continue to build their roster in pursuit of a World Series championship. Stay tuned for more offseason moves from the Padres as they look to strengthen their team for the 2022 season.

  • Padres Sign All-Star Catcher in First Major League Signing of Offseason: Report

The San Diego Padres have made their first major league signing of the offseason.

On Tuesday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes reported that All-Star catcher Elias Diaz was in agreement on a one-year, $3.5 million deal to return to the Padres.

The deal includes a mutual option for 2026 and is pending a physical.

San Diego has had a slow offseason, but this is certainly a good sign and leading them to the right direction.

After losing Jurickson Profar, Tanner Scott, and Kyle Higashioka this offseason, there were some clear holes for the Friars to fill.

With a few different factors such as an ownership dispute, a need to balance the budget, and constant trade rumors with their rostered players, San Diego hasn’t exactly been a hot spot for free agency.

Until securing a deal with Diaz, which is pending a physical, there have been zero major league signings for the Padres this offseason.

Diaz will likely fill the Higashioka-sized hole on the roster and already has a 12-game headstart doing so.

After being cut by the Colorado Rockies last season, he signed a minor league deal with the Friars and ended the 2024 season in a Padres uniform.

The 2023 All-Star selection’s 12 games behind home plate in San Diego were nothing to write home about, but he fills a much-needed hole for the team. He also signals to the baseball world that the Padres can and will sign free agents, no matter how close it is to being time for spring training.

In his All-Star 2023 season, Diaz made 141 appearances for the Rockies and hit .267/.316./409 with an OPS of .725. He added 14 home runs and 72 RBIs in addition to 130 hits that season.

The Padres are a talented bunch and are still, at their core, a 93-win ball club that came within two runs of knocking out the eventual World Series champions last year.

There is no shortage of interest around the team as they set their third consecutive attendance record in 2024 with 3.3 million fans attending home games at Petco Park.

President of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller not only made a budget-friendly move in adding Diaz, but brought in a familiar face who will instantly make an impact on the team.

At 34 years old, Diaz will look to shine and go back to his All-Star ways from 2023, likely in a backup role to Luis Campusano.

  • MLB rumors: Alex Bregman-Astros reunion not a guarantee, Padres shop top pitcher, Diamondbacks still looking

In mere weeks, spring training camps will open across Arizona and Florida. However, there are still plenty of free agents waiting to sign and trade candidates waiting to move, and as such there will be no shortage of activity between now and the start of camp. Speaking of all that, here now are Monday’s hot stove rumors.

Increasingly, signs point to the possibility of the Houston Astros bringing back free-agent infielder (and Astros lifer) Alex Bregman. The club cleared some payroll space by reportedly agreeing to trade reliever Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs, and Jose Altuve appears willing to move to the outfield to make room for Bregman in an infield that already includes new acquisitions Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker. However, The Athletic’s Chandler Rome is here to pump the brakes just a bit:

This could be a simple case of “expectations management” coming out of the front office, as they don’t want paying customers to assume that a Bregman return to Houston is a fait accompli. While the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and perhaps Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams with interest in Bregman, a return to Houston seems to be the most likely outcome. Speaking of which, here’s this update:

Either way, there appears to be significant momentum on the Bregman front.

Astros also showing interest in Polanco

The Astros appear to have a backup plan in case a deal with Bregman doesn’t come to fruition. The Athletic reports that they are also showing interest in former All-Star infielder Jorge Polanco as “a contingency plan” to Bregman.

As noted above, Altuve is open to moving to left field in order to bring Bregman back. It is unclear if Altuve would change positions to accommodate anyone else, though that can always be worked out later.

The switch-hitting Polanco has only played infield in his career, but he’s heading toward his age-31 season and it’s not uncommon for athletic players to be moved to outfield later in their careers. He had very good seasons in 2019 and 2021, but has declined in the ensuing seasons. Last year in 118 games for the Mariners, Polanco hit .213/.296/.355 (93 OPS+) with 11 doubles, 16 homers, 45 RBI, 43 runs and 1.3 WAR.

The San Diego Padres have been in disinvestment mode ever since the death of former owner Peter Seidler, and more recently an internal power struggle has clouded the club’s outlook. They’ve lost multiple free agents thus far in the offseason, including outfielder Jurickson Profar, who recently signed with the Braves. Elsewhere, the Padres are known to be gauging trade interest in ace Dylan Cease going into his walk year. Now The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres may also be looking to move right-handed starter Michael King, who’s in his third year of arbitration eligibility and, like Cease, going into his final year of team control. Parting with either would greatly harm the Padre cause in 2025, but decision-makers in San Diego appear to have other priorities at the moment.

The 29-year-old King, whom the Padres acquired from the New York Yankees in the Juan Soto blockbuster of late 2023, is coming off a standout season in which he logged a sub-3.00 ERA, struck out more than 200 batters, and finished seventh in the NL Cy Young vote.

    D-backs not done

The Arizona Diamondbacks this winter have inked Corbin Burnes to a contract worth more than $200 million and also replaced free agent Christian Walker with Josh Naylor in a trade with Cleveland. Add those talents to an already strong roster, and you have a contender. Snakes lead decision-maker Mike Hazen, however, may not be done fortifying his club. Here’s this from AZ Central’s Nick Piecoro

“Hazen still wants to add a late-inning option to his bullpen — preferably a closer — and a right-handed bat to his position-player group.”

A reunion with Randal Grichuk, who was highly productive as a lefty masher last year for Arizona, seems like a strong possibility. On the bullpen front, the D-backs are looking to replace closer Paul Sewald, who not long ago signed with the Guardians. High-leverage arms still on the free-agent market include Carlos Estevez, Kenley Jansen, and David Robertson, among others. St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is of course an appealing trade target, but the Cardinals may be inclined to keep him in the fold for now and re-evaluate his market leading up to the trade deadline.

The Baltimore Orioles on Monday announced that they’ve signed outfielder Dylan Carlson to a one-year contract. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman adds that the deal will pay Carlson a guaranteed $975,000 with the opportunity to earn another $25,000 if he reaches 200 plate appearances. Carlson, 26, is a former first-rounder who’s coming off a 2024 season for the Cardinals and Rays in which he hit for a 61 OPS+ in 96 games combined. For his career he has an OPS+ of 94 across parts of five MLB seasons. He’s capable of manning all three outfield positions.

The MLB offseason is in full swing, and with that comes a flurry of rumors surrounding some of the biggest names in the game. One of the most intriguing rumors swirling around is the possibility of an Alex Bregman-Astros reunion.

Bregman, who was a key member of the Houston Astros’ World Series-winning team in 2017, has been linked to a potential return to the team after a disappointing 2021 season. However, according to sources close to the situation, a reunion is not a guarantee, as the Astros are exploring all options to improve their roster for the upcoming season.

In other news, the San Diego Padres are reportedly shopping their top pitcher in an effort to bolster their lineup. The Padres had a disappointing finish to the 2021 season and are looking to make some big moves this offseason to improve their chances of competing in the highly competitive NL West division.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks are still actively looking to make moves this offseason, despite a lackluster 2021 season. The Diamondbacks have been linked to several potential trade targets and free agents as they look to improve their roster and make a push for the postseason in 2022.

As the offseason continues, fans can expect plenty more rumors and speculation surrounding some of the biggest names in baseball. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and developments as teams continue to make moves to improve their rosters for the upcoming season.
