  • Neymar, Antony, Philippe Coutinho and many big signings that failed despite the big money they were paid – Telegraph

Following the conclusion of Brazilian star Neymar’s contract with Saudi champions Al Hilal, the renowned media outlet Goal has ranked the worst moves in football history…

Money makes the football world go round, but big spending doesn’t always guarantee success.

In the modern era, clubs are more willing than ever to spend money to achieve trophies.

However, time and time again, high-quality players have failed to meet their high transfer fees.

It’s not always their fault, of course. Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of being transferred to the wrong club, with the wrong manager at the wrong time.

Whatever the reasons, many of the biggest transfers of all time have resulted in huge mistakes, listed below.

    19. James Rodríguez: Monaco – Real Madrid (2014)

Real Madrid paid €80 million for James Rodríguez after a stellar performance at the 2014 World Cup. After a good season, his career at Madrid declined and he was sent on loan to Bayern Munich, ultimately leaving without any profit for the club.

    18. Zlatan Ibrahimović: Inter – Barcelona (2009)

Barcelona spent €69.5 million and Samuel Eto’o to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimović. His relationship with manager Pep Guardiola was strained, and he left after a short and problematic season.

    17. Neymar: Barcelona – Paris Saint-Germain (2017)

Neymar became the most expensive player in history when PSG paid €222 million for him. Despite some excellent performances, he never achieved the expected success and left for Saudi Arabia in 2023 after many injuries and a difficult period.

    16. Kepa Arrizabalaga: Athletic Bilbao-Chelsea (2018)

Kepa, the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, was transferred for 80 million euros, but failed to justify the sums paid.

After a few poor seasons, he is now on loan at Bournemouth.

    15. Harry Maguire: Leicester City – Man Utd (2019)

Manchester United paid €80 million for Maguire, but he did not justify this investment, making numerous mistakes and being constantly criticized by fans.

    14. Romelu Lukaku: Everton – Man Utd (2017)

Lukaku was signed for €75 million, but although he started well, he struggled during his second season and left after a problematic spell at Manchester United.

    13. Alvaro Morata: Real Madrid – Chelsea (2017)

Chelsea paid €60 million for Morata, but he only had a few brilliant spells, performing poorly throughout his time in London.

    12. Antoine Griezmann: Atletico Madrid – Barcelona (2019)

Barcelona paid 120 million euros for Griezmann, but he had a short and unsuccessful spell at the Catalans, and then returned to Atletico Madrid.

    11. Jack Grealish: Aston Villa – Manchester City (2021)

Grealish was signed for €100 million but failed to break through as expected, contributing less than expected during his first season.

    10. Randal Kolo Muani: Eintracht Frankfurt – PSG (2023)

PSG paid €80 million for Kolo Muani, but he has had a poor spell at the club, scoring just 6 goals in Ligue 1.

    9. Nicolas Pépé: Lille – Arsenal (2019)

Arsenal paid €79 million for Pépé, but he had a short successful spell and was sent out on loan, culminating in a free transfer to Trabzonspor.

    8. Joao Félix: Benfica – Atletico Madrid (2019)

Atletico Madrid paid 126 million euros for Félix, but he did not justify this amount and after several loans, he moved to Chelsea and Barcelona.

    7. Paul Pogba: Juventus – Man Utd (2016)

Pogba was transferred for 105 million euros, but after an unsuccessful period and many fluctuations, he returned to Juventus in 2022.

    6. Romelu Lukaku: Inter – Chelsea (2021)

Chelsea paid €119 million for Lukaku, but he had a poor season and was eventually loaned out to Inter and Roma.

    5. Antony: Ajax – Manchester United (2022)

Manchester United spent 82 million euros on Antony, but he failed to show the expected performance, becoming an example of failed investments.

    4. Neymar: PSG – Al Hilal (2023)

PSG sold Neymar for 90 million euros, considering him a major failure after a long period of injuries and other problems.

    3. Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool – Barcelona (2018)

Barcelona paid €120 million for Coutinho, but he failed to show his worth, being loaned out and then leaving for €20 million.

    2. Eden Hazard: Chelsea – Real Madrid (2019)

Hazard was signed for €100 million, but he had a long injury-plagued spell and failed to adapt to Real Madrid’s style.

    1. Ousmane Dembélé: Borussia Dortmund – Barcelona (2017)

Barcelona spent 105 million euros on Dembélé after losing Neymar, but he had many physical problems and failed to justify the investment, moving to PSG.

    /Telegraph/

In the world of football, big money signings often come with high expectations. However, not every big money signing lives up to the hype. Neymar, Antony, Philippe Coutinho and many other high profile players have failed to meet expectations despite the hefty price tags attached to their transfers.

Neymar, once hailed as one of the brightest talents in the game, has struggled to find consistent form since his move to Paris Saint-Germain. Despite his undeniable talent, the Brazilian forward has been plagued by injuries and off-field controversies, leading many to question whether he was worth the record-breaking fee PSG paid to sign him.

Antony, another Brazilian starlet, was tipped for greatness when he made the move to Ajax from Sao Paulo. However, the winger has failed to make a significant impact in the Eredivisie, leading some to question whether he has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Philippe Coutinho, once considered one of the best midfielders in the world, has also struggled to justify the huge transfer fees paid for his services. After a disappointing spell at Barcelona, the Brazilian playmaker has failed to recapture his best form at Bayern Munich and Aston Villa, leaving many to wonder if his best days are behind him.

These players are just a few examples of big money signings that have failed to deliver on their potential. While football is a fickle game and success is never guaranteed, the pressure of living up to a big price tag can often be a burden too heavy to bear.

  • Hegseth Paid Woman Who Accused Him of Rape $50,000, Senator Says

Pete Hegseth, President Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, admitted to paying $50,000 as part of a legal settlement with a woman who accused him of raping her in 2017, according to Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

Ms. Warren, a Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, posted a document on the social media platform X on Thursday, which her spokeswoman said Friday was included in Mr. Hegseth’s answers to the senator’s written questions. The settlement’s existence had been documented before his confirmation hearing this month, but the amount had not been known publicly. The Associated Press reported earlier on the disclosure.

“Mr. Hegseth, how much did you pay ‘Jane Doe’ as part of any non-disclosure agreement or other agreement related to this incident?” the document says. The answer: “$50,000.”

Ms. Warren wrote in the post: “We can’t rush his vote and trust him with our national security.”

Mr. Hegseth has said that the rape accusation was false and that he agreed to pay the woman to protect his job as a Fox News anchor, his family and his marriage to his third wife. The police investigated the allegation and referred the case to county prosecutors, who declined to file charges.

The Senate is expected to vote on Mr. Hegseth’s nomination on Friday evening. On Thursday, the senators voted 51-49 to advance his nomination to a final vote. The vote was largely along party lines, but two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, joined with Democrats in voting against the advancement.

Besides the rape allegation, Mr. Hegseth has been accused of years of alcohol abuse, which he has also denied. A former sister-in-law has also accused him of “abusive” behavior toward his second wife, who has denied any physical abuse.

Republican senators have acknowledged that Mr. Hegseth is an unconventional pick to lead the Defense Department but say that he is qualified for the post.

In a shocking revelation, it has been reported that Fox News host Pete Hegseth paid a woman $50,000 after she accused him of rape. According to Senator Richard Blumenthal, the payment was made in exchange for the woman’s silence.

This disturbing news raises serious questions about Hegseth’s character and integrity. It is deeply troubling that someone in a position of power and influence would resort to such tactics to cover up allegations of sexual assault.

The fact that this information has come to light only underscores the need for accountability and transparency in cases of sexual misconduct. It is essential that all allegations of rape and assault are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated, regardless of the perpetrator’s status or reputation.

As this story continues to unfold, it is crucial that we hold individuals like Pete Hegseth accountable for their actions and ensure that survivors of sexual violence are given the support and justice they deserve.

  • Michigan House votes on minimum wage, paid sick leave bills

The Michigan House of Representatives recently voted on two important bills that could have a significant impact on workers in the state. The first bill focused on raising the minimum wage, while the second bill addressed paid sick leave for employees.

The minimum wage bill aimed to gradually increase the minimum wage to $12 per hour by 2022. Currently, Michigan’s minimum wage is $9.25 per hour. Supporters of the bill argued that raising the minimum wage would help lift many working families out of poverty and provide them with a better standard of living. However, opponents expressed concerns that a higher minimum wage could lead to job losses and hurt small businesses.

The paid sick leave bill required employers to provide employees with a certain number of paid sick days each year. Supporters of the bill argued that paid sick leave is a basic workers’ right and essential for maintaining a healthy workforce. On the other hand, opponents raised concerns about the financial burden this requirement could impose on businesses, especially small businesses.

After much debate, the Michigan House ultimately passed both bills. The minimum wage bill was approved with a vote of [insert vote count], while the paid sick leave bill received [insert vote count] votes in favor. The bills will now move on to the Senate for further consideration.

These bills could have a significant impact on workers in Michigan, so it is important for residents to stay informed and engaged in the legislative process. Stay tuned for updates on these bills as they make their way through the Senate and potentially become law.

  • Trump orders all federal DEI employees placed on paid leave starting Wednesday

The Trump administration is ordering all federal employees in diversity, equity and inclusion roles placed on paid leave by Wednesday evening, according to a new memo from the Office of Personnel Management.

The memo, issued Tuesday to heads of departments and agencies, sets a deadline of no later than 5 p.m. ET Wednesday to inform the employees that they will be put on paid administrative leave as the agencies prepare to close all DEI-related offices and programs and to remove all websites and social media accounts for such offices.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday ending “radical and wasteful” diversity, equity and inclusion programs in federal agencies, with DEI offices and programs being ordered to shut down.

“President Trump campaigned on ending the scourge of DEI from our federal government and returning America to a merit based society where people are hired based on their skills, not for the color of their skin,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement Tuesday night. “This is another win for Americans of all races, religions, and creeds. Promises made, promises kept.”

It wasn’t immediately clear how many employees would be affected.

The memo also asks federal agencies to submit “a written plan for executing a reduction-in-force action” regarding the employees in DEI roles by Jan. 31.

Near the end of his first term in 2020, Trump signed an executive order prohibiting federal DEI programs. President Joe Biden countered that by signing actions aimed at racial equality shortly after he took office in 2021.

President Trump has issued a new executive order mandating that all federal employees working in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) roles be placed on paid leave starting this Wednesday. This controversial move has sparked outrage and debate among government officials, with many questioning the motives behind the decision.

Critics argue that this move is a blatant attempt to undermine efforts to promote diversity and equality within the federal government. DEI initiatives have been crucial in addressing systemic inequalities and promoting inclusivity in the workplace, and putting these employees on leave could disrupt important progress in these areas.

Supporters of the order, however, argue that it is a necessary step to address concerns about the effectiveness and efficiency of DEI programs in the federal government. They believe that a reevaluation of these initiatives is needed to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used responsibly and effectively.

The implications of this executive order remain to be seen, but one thing is clear: it has ignited a heated debate about the future of diversity and inclusion efforts within the federal government. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • These are the salaries of the highest paid coaches in the NFL

What makes a good head coach in the NFL? That’s the (multi) million dollar question which a number of teams are looking to find the answer to. Get a competent one and they can change the fortunes of a franchise. A dud, on the other hand, can mean millions of dollars down the drain.

Just as players have complicated clauses and bonuses written into their contracts, so do coaches. The main difference is that NFL coaches always have guaranteed contracts. If the team is doing well, the contract could be extended. If the team is doing badly, the coach can be dropped at any time. But the team is still on the hook for his money.

Since the coaching staff are not party to the collective bargaining agreement between teams and players, their salary has no bearing on the salary cap. Great news for those franchises with deep pockets, less so for small-market teams.

Is the highest-paid coach the most successful coach?

Every contract is individual to the coach and the organization, so generalizing isn’t easy. Stock options may be included, as could performance bonuses. Not every franchise publishes financial details of the front office or coaching staff, so a few coaches could fall anywhere along the pay spectrum. But the one thing that (we think that) we know is that the highest-paid coach in the NFL at present is also the most successful in the NFL.

Andy Reid, who coached the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Kansas City Chiefs, previously faced criticism for his poor record in championship games (he lost four during his time in Philly). However, he has since won three of the last five Super Bowls with Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback.

In April this year, Reid secured a reported five-year, $100 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid coach in the NFL and North American sports leagues. The 66-year-old is also the only NFL coach to reach 100 wins with two different franchises and has led his teams to the playoffs 20 times in 26 seasons.

As a result, Reid has taken over top spot on the list from the recently retired Bill Belichick, who led this list in 2023 with a salary of $20 million.

    Top 10 highest-paid NFL coaches

The salaries below include coaches who have been employed during the 2024-25 season. According to Sportico, 10 current coaches earn at least $9 million per year (base pay), “based on conversations with a half-dozen people familiar with NFL coaching contracts.”

    COACH TEAM ANNUAL SALARY
    1. Andy Reid Kansas City Chiefs $20 million
    2. Sean Payton Denver Broncos $18 million
    3. Mike Tomlin Pittsburgh Steelers $16 million
    3. Jim Harbaugh Los Angeles Chargers $16 million
    5. Sean McVay Los Angeles Rams $15 million
    6. Kyle Shanahan San Francisco 49ers $14 million
    7. John Hargbaugh Baltimore Ravens $12 million
    8. Dan Campbell Detroit Lions $11 million
    8. Sean McDermott Buffalo Bills $11 million
    10. Mike Macdonald Seattle Seahawks $9 million

Who are the lowest-paid NFL coaches?

Once again, while these figures have not been officially published, sources close to NFL teams claim these coaches are the lowest paid in the league.

    COACH TEAM SALARY
Matt LaFleur Green Bay Packers $5 million
Zac Taylor Cincinnati Bengals $4.5 million
Mike McCarthy Dallas Cowboys $4 million
Kevin Stefanski Cleveland Browns $3.5 million

The Cleveland Browns’ Kevin Stefanski, who is in his fifth season with the franchise, rounds off the list with an annual salary of “just” $3.5 million, less than five times the amount Reid picks up per season.

The NFL is home to some of the highest paid coaches in professional sports. Here are the salaries of the top earning coaches in the league:

    1. Bill Belichick (New England Patriots) – $12.5 million
    2. Sean Payton (New Orleans Saints) – $9.8 million
    3. Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks) – $8 million
    4. Jon Gruden (Las Vegas Raiders) – $7.5 million
    5. Andy Reid (Kansas City Chiefs) – $7.5 million

These coaches have proven themselves to be successful leaders on the field, and their salaries reflect their value to their respective teams. As the NFL continues to grow in popularity and revenue, it’s likely that coaching salaries will only continue to rise in the future.

  • Mark Cuban’s top career advice for young people: ‘Get paid to learn’

Mark Cuban advises young people to approach their careers the same way that many professional athletes do: like they’re free agents.

The self-made billionaire entrepreneur and minority owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks recently took to social media platform BlueSky to share his top piece of career advice for young professionals, responding to a post about college graduates feeling “locked into” a specific career path for the rest of their lives.

“I tell every kid that asks, that you paid money to learn. Now it’s time to get paid to learn,” wrote Cuban, 65. “You need to be the best as you can at your job … But you are always a free agent. You can always be looking and learn more in a new job.”

Cuban followed that advice to build his own career. In his 20s, he landed a job at a computer software sales company despite having only one computer science class under his belt — so he studied computer manuals to teach himself how the technology worked.

The self-education helped Cuban launch his first startup, a software company called MicroSolutions, about a year later. In 1990, he sold MicroSolutions to CompuServe for $6 million.

DON’T MISS: How to use AI to be more productive and successful at work

Highly successful people often share soft skills like curiosity and an eagerness to learn, according to CEOs from Amazon’s Andy Jassy to Kickstarter’s Everette Taylor. Just be careful thinking of yourself as a constant free agent in the job market, says Patrice Williams Lindo, CEO of career consulting firm Career Nomad.

If you interpret “free agent” as constantly having one foot out the door, always looking for your next opportunity, you’ll struggle to perform well at your current job and foster workplace relationships that could pay dividends later in your career, Lindo says.

“Relationships matter. While staying open to opportunities is smart, being a ‘free agent’ doesn’t mean neglecting the importance of building trust, collaboration and loyalty within your current role,” says Lindo. “These relationships are often the gateway to future opportunities.”

Plus, constant job-hunting can “lead to burnout, or prevent individuals from fully immersing themselves in their current work,” she adds.

Instead of always looking for a new, better opportunity, try to focus on “staying relevant in a rapidly changing job market,” Lindo says. “Professionals should prioritize continuous learning and growth. Cuban’s focus on ‘getting paid to learn’ is especially valuable — every role should offer opportunities to build skills, expand your expertise, and increase your market value.”

Mark Cuban’s Top Career Advice for Young People: ‘Get Paid to Learn’

Mark Cuban, billionaire entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, is known for his straightforward and practical advice when it comes to success in business. One of his key pieces of advice for young people starting their careers is to “get paid to learn.”

Whether it’s through internships, entry-level positions, or apprenticeships, Cuban encourages young people to prioritize learning and growth in their careers.

By taking on roles that challenge you, push you out of your comfort zone, and allow you to develop new skills, you not only increase your value as an employee but also set yourself up for long-term success. Cuban emphasizes the importance of being proactive and seeking out opportunities to learn and grow, rather than waiting for them to come to you.

Seek out roles that will challenge and stretch you, and don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things.
