Finebaum waves white flag on ESPN after leading Alabama parade: ‘Count me out’
Paul Finebaum is done stumping for Alabama.
A day after the Crimson Tide lost to Michigan 19-13 in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, the SEC Network analyst “surrendered” on Wednesday’s “Get Up.”
“I led the Alabama parade to get them into the playoffs,” Finebaum said. “You know that I stood on every building, especially on this show, and, on the first day of the new year, I’m surrendering. I am waving the white flag.
“Forget Alabama. Count me out.”
Last month, when the CFP selected SMU or the 12-team playoff over Alabama, Finebaum said the committee took the easy way out.
“They did not want to be responsible for killing conference championship games just yet,” Finebaum said at the time.
“I’m gravitating back toward Alabama because I know they are capable of beating good teams,” he added. “I’d rather put in a flawed team that can beat a good team like Georgia, than just put someone in because they have a win over the No. 23 team in the country.”
Penn State toyed with mistake-prone SMU in a 38-10 victory in the opening round of the College Football Playoff last week.
However, the Tide hardly looked the part Tuesday of a CFP contender, falling flat against the Wolverines.

Paul Finebaum, the outspoken ESPN personality and self-proclaimed Alabama superfan, has finally admitted defeat. After years of staunchly supporting the Crimson Tide and leading the parade of Alabama fans on ESPN, Finebaum has officially waved the white flag.In a shocking turn of events, Finebaum announced on his show that he can no longer continue to blindly support Alabama after their recent loss. “I’ve been a diehard Alabama fan for as long as I can remember, but enough is enough,” Finebaum said. “I can’t keep defending this team when they can’t even pull off a win in the big games.”
Finebaum’s change of heart comes after Alabama’s recent loss to their rival team, leaving them out of the championship race. Despite his initial reluctance to accept defeat, Finebaum finally realized that he could no longer ignore the writing on the wall.
“Count me out,” Finebaum declared. “I can’t keep pretending that everything is okay with Alabama when it’s clearly not. It’s time for me to admit that maybe, just maybe, they’re not the unbeatable powerhouse I thought they were.”
While Finebaum’s decision may come as a shock to many, it is a refreshing display of honesty and humility. Perhaps this defeat will serve as a wake-up call for the diehard Alabama fans who have blindly followed their team through thick and thin.
As Finebaum hangs up his Alabama hat, it remains to be seen who he will throw his support behind next. One thing is for certain, however – the days of Finebaum leading the Alabama parade are officially over.

Mayor Will Travel Rose Parade Route in Vintage Bus with Family, Special Guests – Pasadena Now
[City of Pasadena photo] When the 136th Rose Parade winds its way through Pasadena on New Year’s Day, Mayor Victor M. Gordo will share his ride along the route in a piece of American history with his family and some very special guests: Pasadena residents Terry and Rebecca Crews, and iconic Dodgers broadcaster Jaime Jarrín, accompanied by Jaime’s son Jorge and daughter-in-law Maggie.
The Mayor and his guests will travel the parade route in a restored 1925 White Motor Co. bus, known as #176, that once shuttled tourists through Yellowstone National Park. The vehicle, which served the park until the late 1930s, has had several owners, including casino magnate Bill Harrah, before being acquired by its current owner, Page Whyte, in 2004. Despite accumulating several inches of dust, it only needed a thorough cleaning, new tires, and a new battery. After adding fresh gasoline, it started right up.
Terry Crews, currently the host of NBC’s top rated alternative series “America’s Got Talent,” which is in its seventeenth season, is an author, action-movie hero, sitcom star, children’s book illustrator, advertising pitchman, playable video game character, talent show host, high-end furniture designer, and human rights activist. A three-time People Magazine Sexiest Man Alive actor, he has starred as a series regular in three consecutive TV series surpassing 100 episodes: NBC’s Golden Globe Award-winning series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Are We There Yet?” and “Everybody Hates Chris.” Crews is set to star in “Tales of the Walking Dead” and hosts “America’s Got Talent” spinoffs “AGT Champions” and “AGT Extreme.”
Iconic Dodgers broadcaster Jaime Jarrín [LA Digers via X] After several years in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles, where he painted portraits of teammates to supplement his income, Crews turned to performing arts. He will be starring in and executive producing a CBS comedy pilot based on the long-running comic strip JumpStart.
In October 2024, Rebecca Crews opened her flagship store in the Old Pasadena shopping district, following her December 2021 launch of a clothing, cosmetics, and accessories line at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Her brand is a mix of classic and contemporary, suited for powerful and feminine women everywhere who want to look and feel their best.
The Crews are active philanthropists, supporting organizations including RISE US, Stand Up to Cancer, and The Worldwide Salvation Army. Rebecca is a regular contributor to various charities and organizations worldwide that feed the poor, serve women and children, and support families in need. They are particularly involved in advocacy against sex trafficking and sexual assault, having spoken at many events supporting victims of sex trafficking, sexual assault, so as to change the narrative around the issue, holding perpetrators accountable through legislation and awareness. The couple has five children and one grandchild.
“Rebecca and I are beyond excited to be a part of the 2025 Rose Parade!” said Terry Crews. “As longtime Pasadena residents, this iconic celebration holds a special place in our hearts. It’s an honor to be included in such a cherished tradition that brings creativity, joy, and community spirit to life. We can’t wait to celebrate alongside our neighbors and share the magic of Pasadena with millions around the world. Let’s make this year’s parade unforgettable!”
Jarrín, who served as the Dodgers’ Spanish-language broadcaster for 64 years, will be joined by his son Jorge, a former LA radio personality and Dodger broadcaster, and Jorge’s wife of 43 years, Maggie.
The Jarrín family has deep roots in the area, having lived in Pasadena, Altadena, and San Marino since 1962.
Rebecca and Terry Crews [Courtesy photo] “We are thrilled to be joining Mayor Victor Gordo, along with his family to ring in 2025. Mayor Gordo is a friend and has been an outstanding Mayor and we are proud to make the ride down Colorado Boulevard with him,” states Jorge.
Though retired from broadcasting, the elder Jarrín maintains his position as the longest-serving Dodgers employee, having joined the organization in 1959. Jorge now leads the family’s nonprofit, the Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation, which has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships to economically challenged youth.
Mayor Gordo said plans for the ride have been brewing for some time.
“For a couple of years now, Terry, Rebecca and I have talked about riding down Colorado Blvd. together and we will finally have that opportunity. Terry and Rebecca: here we go!” said Mayor Gordo. “Jaime Jarrín is a kind and humble friend and it will be an honor to have him, Jorge and Maggie ride with us. As a Spanish-speaking immigrant, I recall, vividly, listening to his eloquent and poetic call of Dodger games and beaming with pride. It is an honor to have these good friends join Kelly, Emma, Michael and me as we welcome 2025 in Pasadena on the Best Day Ever!”
The Rose Parade travels 5.5 miles down Colorado Boulevard and features four types of entries: floral-decorated floats entered by a participating corporation, nonprofit organization or municipality; equestrian units; bands; and Tournament entries.
The Mayor of Pasadena, California will be taking a unique approach to experiencing the iconic Rose Parade this year. Instead of watching from the sidelines, Mayor Will and his family will be traveling the parade route in a vintage bus, accompanied by special guests. This exciting announcement has created a buzz in the community, as residents look forward to seeing the mayor and his entourage make their way down Colorado Boulevard in style. The vintage bus, adorned with festive decorations, is sure to turn heads and capture the spirit of the annual New Year’s Day tradition.
The mayor’s decision to travel the parade route in this fashion is a nod to the city’s rich history and commitment to preserving its heritage. By embracing this nostalgic mode of transportation, Mayor Will is not only honoring Pasadena’s past, but also creating lasting memories for himself, his family, and the community.
Stay tuned for updates and photos of Mayor Will’s vintage bus ride along the Rose Parade route – this is one New Year’s Day celebration you won’t want to miss!

JSU’s Sonic Boom and State of MS to participate in Rose Parade
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – All eyes will be glued to the 2025 Tournament of Roses Parade on Wednesday, with Mississippians entertaining crowds along the parade route.
Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South and Mississippi’s musical legacy appear on the national stage, showing why we’re the birthplace of American music.
“Here on the biggest of stages is an incredible opportunity for us,” said Governor Tate Reeves.
He and the First Family are in Pasadena, California, and will be atop the state float during the 136th Rose Parade.
Adorned with 13,000 yellow roses, it pays homage to Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Jimmy Rogers, and Bobby Rush.
It is a reminder to the world that Mississippi is the birthplace of American music, and bringing live sounds of southern music is Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South.
“I don’t know who all is gonna be in the parade, but I do know who is gonna take the show,” added Reeves.
“It’s an opportunity for us to share with the world what we’ve always known, which is that we have the greatest band in the land, that Mississippi is home, it is the birthplace of music, and that we are maintaining that tradition,” said Dr. Lisa Beckley-Roberts, Chair of Jackson State University’s Department of Music.
Visit Jackson sees this as a chance to showcase the city and state.
“This is a place that we’ve belonged for a long time, but we’re finally taking our place,” said Visit Jackson spokesperson Yolanda Clay-Moore. “We have such a rich culture and tapestry a musical footprint.”
It’s been quite a year for JSU, performing at the Super Bowl in February and now starting the New Year in the Rose Parade.
“A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students and now to cap off this year and to be in California and to be performing at the Rose Parade, we’re all just overwhelmed with gratitude,” added Beckley-Roberts.
The Rose Parade airs Wednesday at 10 a.m. on NBC.

Who are Kiesza and Aloe Blacc? The 2025 Rose Parade opening performers, explained – Pasadena Star News
On Wednesday morning, Jan. 1, singers Kiesza and Aloe Blacc will kick off the 2025 Rose Parade with musical performances atop the float by Honda, where they’ll be accompanied by a synchronized light show, pyrotechnics and dancers galore.
The Tournament of Roses announced the pair on Dec. 11 as the newest musical talents to begin the parade, a slot held by David Archuleta, Cassadee Pope, Michelle Williams and Rush Davis during last year’s parade.
If it’s the first you’re hearing of the performers — or you need a refresher — here’s who they are, what they’re known for and what they’re up to now:
Kiesza
The Canadian-born, 35-year-old singer and instrumentalist is best known for her 2014 hit “Hideaway,” which dominated global charts at the time of its release and holds over 347,000,000 streams on Spotify.
That happens to be the song she’s slated to perform during the parade, where she’ll be joined by 20 dancers in shimmering reflective costumes during a reprised version of the song with “renewed energy for the global audience,” organizers said. She’ll also perform a glimpse of her Billboard No. 1 hit, “I Go Dance,” while in the backdrop, extreme acrobats on jumping stilts will perform.
Once a folk singer, Kiesza primarily produces up-tempo dance music, which is the genre of both her released albums; 2014’s “Sound of a Woman” and 2020’s “Crave.” In 2018, she was featured on Dreamworks’ “Home” soundtrack with her song “Cannonball.“
Most recently, Kiesza released her 2024 EP “Dancing and Crying: Vol. 1” and has been sharing her journey to the Rose Parade stage on her Instagram.
Aloe Blacc
After Kiesza, it’s Aloe Blacc’s turn to take the float stage. He will perform his “Wake Me Up”— a global mega-hit by the late Avicii, in which Blacc was the co-writer and vocalist.
Born in Orange County, the 45-year-old singer and rapper got his start in indie rap group Emanon, comprised of himself and hip hop producer Exile in 1995.
Blacc launched his solo career in 2003 and hit his first major success with the 2010 song, “I Need a Dollar,” which has since grossed nearly 285,000,000 streams on Spotify. Other hits include 2013’s “The Man” and, more recently, a country version of “Wake Me Up,” which Blacc released with country-singer Cooper Alan in November of 2024.
Today, Blacc boasts over 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify and recently announced his upcoming residency at New York City venue Blue Note.

The B-2 Spirit Will (Probably) Be Back at the Rose Bowl Parade
The United States Strategic Command has yet to make it official, but the organizers of the 136th Tournament of Roses Parade, which is held in advance of the annual Rose Bowl college football match-up on New Year’s Day, have included a flyover of a U.S. Air Force Northrop B-2 Spirit bomber in the upcoming program.
It isn’t a holiday surprise, however.
The flying wing aircraft, which are operated by the U.S. Air Force’s 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base (AFB), Missouri, have been a staple at the annual parade since 2005—with only a break in 2023 due to a safety stop following a crash weeks earlier. That resulted in a pair of Rockwell B-1B Lancer bombers from Dyess AFB, Texas, filling in before the B-2s returned this past January.
It would seem unlikely—barring another unfortunate incident—that the Air Force’s B-2s would sit out what has become a fan-favorite tradition. It provides a rare opportunity for many to see the famed bomber in the skies overhead.
“We have enjoyed a long relationship with the city of Pasadena and are honored to bring the B-2 back to demonstrate Team Whiteman’s commitment to the American people,” Col. Keith J. Butler, 509th Bomb Wing commander at Whiteman Air Force Base, said in a statement last year when announcing the Spirit’s return to the famed parade.
Not a New Tradition
Today, it is common at large sporting events for U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine, and U.S. Navy aircraft to take part in a flyover. It is now expected—along with the National Anthem—at such events as the Rose Bowl, the Super Bowl, NASCAR races, and Major League Baseball’s World Series.
Flyovers are not a new tradition.
It was more than ninety years before the B-2 began making its appearance at the parade that the first flyover at a sporting event occurred. According to Blue Sky News, it took place on September 15, 1918, during World War I—while the country was also dealing with the global influenza pandemic.
“60 military aircraft flew over Game 1 of the World Series at Comiskey Park in Chicago,” Blue Sky News explained. “Nearly 20,000 fans looked in awe at the plane-filled sky, then watched with considerably less pleasure as the legendary Babe Ruth, pitching for the Boston Red Sox against the Chicago Cubs, threw a complete game shutout en route to Boston’s fourth World Series win in six years.”
No doubt the sight of so many aircraft fewer than twenty years after the first manned flight might have been even more memorable for many in the stands than seeing Ruth at the mound! In the century to come, the U.S. military has only served to offer even more impressive flyovers.
As Simple Flying reported, the impressive displays “represent the culmination of months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated individuals.”
Planning takes months and involves coordination with the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and local authorities. But it can result in something truly special.
Such was the case in January 2021’s Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida, which featured all three bombers that are currently in service: the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, B-1B Lancer, and B-2 Spirit. It was the first such flyover of all three aircraft in such an event. The aircraft, from three different bases, rarely operate together but for the big game flew just 250 feet apart at 280 mph!
A year later, it wasn’t bombers—but to mark the Air Force’s 75th anniversary in 2022, Super Bowl LVI saw a P-51D Mustang, A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor, and F-35 Lightning II conduct an impressive flyover!
Such displays—which require military precision that only the military can deliver—don’t come cheap, but the Defense Department has a workaround.
“Since DODI 5410.19 also prohibits military aircraft from being hired or paid for an aerial display, most flyover hours come from the supporting unit’s annual flight training budget. Their approval requires a healthy balance between the cost of operating the aircraft, the benefit of community engagement, and the training value associated with the event,” Simple Flying explained.
Thus, while it can cost more than $100,000 per flight hour for the B-2 Spirit to take part in the Rose Parade and do a flyover of the stadium, the result is a truly priceless moment.

The B-2 Spirit Will (Probably) Be Back at the Rose Bowl ParadeFans of the iconic B-2 Spirit bomber will be thrilled to hear that there are discussions underway to bring back the stealth aircraft for the annual Rose Bowl Parade. While nothing is set in stone yet, sources close to the planning committee have hinted that the B-2 may make a triumphant return to the parade after a several-year hiatus.
The B-2 Spirit, known for its sleek design and cutting-edge technology, has made appearances at the Rose Bowl Parade in the past, wowing spectators with its impressive flyovers. The aircraft’s presence adds an air of prestige and patriotism to the event, making it a fan favorite year after year.
If the B-2 does indeed make a comeback at the Rose Bowl Parade, it is sure to be a highlight of the event and a must-see for aviation enthusiasts. Stay tuned for more updates as plans unfold for the potential return of the B-2 Spirit to the parade route.

Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Watch live on 1 January as London’s New Year’s Day Parade takes place across the capital.
The start of the event was delayed by 30 minutes due to high winds being forecast, and inflatable cartoon characters are no longer going to be used, event spokesman Dan Kirkby said.
The route this year sees the parade start at Piccadilly outside The Ritz. It then heads east to Piccadilly Circus before going down Regent Street St James’s.
The procession will then turn left down Pall Mall and past Trafalgar Square. The parade will then finish at 3.30pm at Whitehall.
Singer Peter Andre will headline the parade this year.
Other acts performing include the motorcycle display team Moto-Stunts International and the London Chinatown Chinese Association.

When the Parade is over, it may take you longer to get home than it took to get to the Parade!
By Rena Kurlander
You can head to Floatfest, the ‘Rose Parade Showcase of Floats’ (Washington & Sierra Madre Blvd) to view the floats up close. You can head to the Rose Bowl area and enjoy pre-game activities. Or you can linger a bit in town and check out the taste and flavor of our city.
Here’s our advice on how to avoid the “After the Parade” traffic.
Right after the Parade!
As Pasadena streets will be fully packed, many businesses in the city will be open for a ‘bite and wait for traffic to die down’. Here’s a sample of what you might find:
This area (Catalina Ave. & Green St.) offers a feel of New York away from New York.
This area (in and around El Molino & Colorado Blvd) boasts Landmark Pasadena, Great selections at Monopole Wine, Blaze Pizza, Arcade Lane, and Urth Cafe (Madison Ave & Colorado Blvd). Drive a bit beyond Lake Ave. and you’ll get to Hummus Labs at 950 E Colorado Blvd, Site 104 (mention our newspaper and get a 10% discount on your order).
This area (in and around Del Mar & South Lake Ave.) has the British inspired Burlington Arcade and The Commons.
This district has shopping, dining, bars and much more. You ask for it, we got it at Old Pasadena (some may still refer to it as “old town”). With many shops and bars we are confident that you will find something to occupy your time and have fun.
Here's a partial list of what will be open on New Year's Eve and Parade Day: - Dollar Skewers By Jumak 45 N Raymond Ave. Open until 2:00 am on New Year's Eve and then after the Parade. - Union street French Café 109 Union St. Open New Year's Eve and after the parade. - Commune Records 12 Holly St. Open early on New Year's Day
- North Lake Ave toward Altadena
Go up on North Lake Avenue for more shops and make sure to check the Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena in the evening. (Christmas Tree Lane Model Railroad Society is open on New Year’s Day only).
If you’ve taken our advice and you parked on side streets, an alternative close-by city is South Pasadena. Their Mission Street is a friendly-pedestrian street (between Diamond Ave. and Meridian Ave).
When will traffic subside?
Usually traffic flow takes three to four hours to become normal again, so enjoy your stay and have fun. Life is too short to be spent stuck in traffic!
You’re advised to leave before the Rose Bowl game ends and traffic becomes crazy again.
Enjoy Pasadena!
