  • When Auschwitz Becomes a Theme Park

Holocaust and tourism are a strange pairing: a road trip to hell. At Auschwitz, I saw a man check his Tinder, and I watched a tour descend into a gas chamber with obvious excitement. But as survivors die—we’re coming up, this month, on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz—and as antisemitic theories doubting the Holocaust spread again, these places survive as the last connection to the truth.

Why we tour these sites of human depravity is a subject I’ve written about before, and it’s the theme of the new movie A Real Pain. Written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, the film is about Jewish American cousins Benji, played by Kieran Culkin, and David, played by Eisenberg, visiting Poland on a guided trip alongside a lonely divorcée, a married couple, and a Rwandan genocide survivor who has converted to Judaism. Benji and David see the sites and visit their late grandmother’s childhood home. She escaped the Holocaust, and bequeathed them the money for the trip because she wanted them to understand themselves better. It’s a tender, touching film about how trauma cascades down generations, and it’s interesting to see what is, essentially, a Holocaust film set many years after the fact.

Benji is warm and wild, while David is conventional and shy. Both are flailing. In Lublin’s Old Jewish Cemetery, Benji scolds the tour guide for using too many facts when discussing the Jews who died there. “These are real people,” he rants. “This is making the whole thing feel really cold.”

But that’s Poland. When I went in 2021, and again in 2023, I found there was an ambivalence toward Jews and, as Benji also notices in the film, an awful emotional deadness.

Auschwitz, the infamous Nazi concentration camp where over a million people were systematically murdered during the Holocaust, is a place of unimaginable tragedy and horror. It is a solemn reminder of the darkest chapter in human history, a place where the atrocities committed by the Nazis must never be forgotten or trivialized.

However, in recent years, there has been a disturbing trend of Auschwitz being treated as a tourist attraction or a theme park. Visitors flock to the site, taking selfies and posing for photos in front of the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign, seemingly more interested in ticking off a box on their travel itinerary than paying their respects to the victims of the Holocaust.

The commercialization of Auschwitz is a deeply troubling development, turning a place of profound sorrow and remembrance into a place of entertainment and consumerism. Tours are marketed as “educational experiences” or “historical adventures,” with little regard for the dignity and solemnity that should be afforded to such a sacred site.

When Auschwitz becomes a theme park, it diminishes the memory of the millions of people who perished there. It cheapens their suffering and devalues the importance of remembering the Holocaust. It is a stark reminder of the dangers of commodifying tragedy and turning it into a spectacle for profit.

We must remember Auschwitz not as a theme park, but as a place of profound sadness and reflection. We must honor the memory of the victims and ensure that their stories are never forgotten. Auschwitz should never be reduced to a mere tourist attraction – it is a somber reminder of the ultimate consequences of hatred and intolerance, and must be treated with the respect and reverence it deserves.

  • New resort next to Zion National Park sparks concern over potential impact on local wildlife

Conservationists have raised fears over plans to build a luxury resort near the boundary of Zion National Park.

A historic ranch in the Canaan Mountain Wilderness area, which borders the south west of the national park, will be turned into a 350-guest complex following approval by local lawmakers.

The recent announcement of a new resort being built next to Zion National Park has sparked concerns among environmentalists and wildlife advocates over the potential impact on local wildlife.

The resort, which is set to include a luxury hotel, spa, and golf course, is raising fears that increased human activity and development in the area could disrupt the natural habitat of animals such as bighorn sheep, deer, and various bird species.

Critics worry that the construction of the resort could lead to habitat destruction, increased pollution, and disturbance of wildlife migration patterns. They also express concerns about potential conflicts between visitors and wildlife, as well as the long-term effects of increased human presence on the delicate ecosystem of the park.

While developers claim that the resort will be built in an environmentally responsible manner and will provide economic benefits to the local community, many are calling for a thorough environmental impact assessment and for measures to be put in place to protect the wildlife and natural beauty of the area.

As the debate over the new resort continues, it remains to be seen how the project will ultimately impact the local wildlife and the iconic landscape of Zion National Park.

  • Brush fire breaks out in Griffith Park amid severe wind warning

    Generate Key Takeaways

Los Angeles firefighters were battling a small brush fire that broke out in Griffith Park on Monday afternoon.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire was reported around 1 p.m. and had burned half an acre. Firefighters were responding to the scene south of the Griffith Observatory. Smoke could be seen from Hollywood.

Helicopters made water drops, which appeared to slow the fire considerable.

A “particularly dangerous situation” wind warning is in effect from noon Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday for swaths of Los Angeles County and most of Ventura County — an unprecedented fifth time the National Weather Service has sounded the alarm this season for acute fire conditions.

Peak gusts of 50 mph to 70 mph are possible along the coast and valleys, while sustained winds are expected to be between 25 mph to 40 mph. Isolated gusts of up to 100 mph are possible in the mountains and foothills, while sustained winds there are expected to be between 30 mph to 50 mph, said Rose Schoenfeld, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Oxnard.

Brush fire breaks out in Griffith Park amid severe wind warning

A brush fire has broken out in Griffith Park, sending plumes of smoke into the air and prompting evacuations of nearby areas. The fire, which started in the early hours of the morning, has quickly spread due to strong winds in the area.

Authorities have issued a severe wind warning for the region, with gusts of up to 50 miles per hour expected throughout the day. This has made it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze, which has already consumed several acres of land.

Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods have been urged to evacuate as a precaution, and a temporary shelter has been set up for those affected by the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials suspect that it may have been sparked by dry conditions and high winds.

As the fire continues to spread, officials are urging residents to stay vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. The safety of residents and firefighters is the top priority, and every effort is being made to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.

Stay tuned for updates on the Griffith Park brush fire as the situation develops.

Rumors are swirling that Kamala Harris, who officially leaves her job as vice president today, might be eyeing a home on the Upper West Side, as first reported by the New York Post’s Page Six.

Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, was spotted earlier in January touring a $20,000-a-month three-bedroom apartment in the Park Loggia building on West 61st Street between Broadway and Columbus, according to the Post.

The new Upper West Side luxury building has 24/7 doorman service, security, a rooftop and outdoor terrace with Central Park views, a fitness center, golf simulator, music practice rooms, and more.

According to the Post, citing an unnamed source, “the soon-to-be-former VEEP and Second Gentleman intend for Los Angeles to continue to be their base when they leave Number One Observatory Circle [in Washington, D.C.] this week.” But the same source “conceded that Emhoff has indeed been casting his eye over some homes in the Big Apple on the couple’s behalf.”

Emhoff’s daughter also lives in Brooklyn.

You can read more — HERE.

Actor Mark Ruffalo visited City Hall this month in an effort to help preserve the West-Park Presbyterian Church on the Upper West Side.

Ruffalo met with First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and City Councilmember Gale Brewer to discuss the ongoing dispute between preservationists and a developer over the fate of the church at the corner of West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, sources told the New York Post. The church congregation says it can’t afford needed repairs and has asked to sell the property to a developer who would build condos in the space.

Brewer, who has sided with those who want to preserve the church, said it “is not falling apart,” according to the  Post. “I was there two nights ago. Beautiful, not falling apart,” said Brewer. “It does need money for the roof, which we have, and then we can take the scaffolding off.”

The last update in the long-running West-Park Presbyterian Church saga was that the church was withdrawing its request to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission to grant a “hardship application” that would have cleared the way for the 133-year-old church to sell the property and have it demolished.

The congregation issued a statement at the time saying that it would resubmit the hardship application, when the ongoing litigation around the building was resolved. That litigation is still ongoing.

On Saturday, a mist rolled into Central Park with the warmer weather and rain.

Kamala Harris Might be Moving to the UWS; Mark Ruffalo Visits City Hall To Discuss UWS Church; Central Park in the Mist

Exciting news is swirling around the Upper West Side as rumors of Vice President Kamala Harris potentially moving to the neighborhood have been circulating. The UWS is known for its beautiful brownstones, charming cafes, and proximity to Central Park, making it a popular choice for many New Yorkers.

In other UWS news, actor Mark Ruffalo was spotted visiting City Hall to discuss the future of a historic church in the neighborhood. Ruffalo, known for his activism and environmental advocacy, has been vocal about preserving the church’s architectural integrity while also finding a way to repurpose the space for community use.

And speaking of the UWS, Central Park was shrouded in a mysterious mist earlier this week, creating a magical and ethereal atmosphere for park-goers. The mist added an extra layer of beauty to the already picturesque park, making for a truly enchanting experience.
