    • Strategic $100M partnership with AST SpaceMobile enhances network coverage

    • FCC approval obtained for testing satellite-to-phone connections

    • Network coverage exceeds 99% of populated areas

    • Strong revenue performance of $134.8B in 2024

    • Deployment of 300 satellite-based portable network assets for emergency coverage

    Insights

Verizon’s satellite connectivity strategy marks a pivotal shift in telecommunications infrastructure, presenting significant implications for investors. The $100 million strategic investment in AST SpaceMobile, coupled with FCC approval for beta testing, positions Verizon at the forefront of satellite-to-cellular integration. This advancement addresses a critical market gap in rural and remote coverage.

    The business impact is multifaceted:

    • Enhanced service reliability through 300 satellite-based assets strengthens Verizon’s competitive moat in emergency response and remote coverage
    • Direct-to-cellular capability without specialized hardware reduces implementation costs and accelerates market adoption
    • Rapid deployment potential in remote areas provides first-mover advantage in underserved markets
    • Strategic partnerships with AST SpaceMobile and Skylo diversify technology risk while maintaining control over service delivery

This infrastructure enhancement could drive revenue growth through reduced churn in rural markets and new service offerings. The initiative aligns with Verizon’s 134.8 billion revenue base and reinforces its market leadership position in network coverage and reliability. The technology’s scalability and compatibility with existing devices significantly reduces adoption barriers, potentially accelerating market penetration and return on investment.

The strategic significance of Verizon’s satellite initiative extends beyond mere coverage expansion. This move represents a sophisticated market positioning strategy that addresses multiple business objectives:

    • Market differentiation through unique service offerings in previously unreachable areas
    • Operational efficiency through rapid deployment capabilities compared to traditional infrastructure
    • Risk mitigation by diversifying network delivery methods
    • Competitive advantage in emergency response and mission-critical communications

The investment carries strategic weight beyond the immediate $100 million commitment. By leveraging existing spectrum assets (850 MHz band) and avoiding specialized hardware requirements, Verizon maximizes resource efficiency while creating barriers to competition. The FCC approval for beta testing accelerates the timeline to market, potentially leading to faster revenue realization and market share gains in underserved areas.

FCC authorizes Verizon and AST to test satellite to cell phone voice, full data and video applications

NEW YORK, Jan. 31, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, Verizon is pushing the boundaries of satellite and terrestrial telecommunications convergence. Satellites are no longer reserved for the extraordinary—they are woven into the everyday, and are being used to help connect and power customers’ lives.

A lot has changed since 2014 when Verizon’s famous test man roamed the country asking “Can you hear me now?” Now he’s back, and reaching the limits of space with the help of American icon and astronaut Buzz Aldrin. They’re partnering to show how America’s largest network just got better.

“Fifty-six years ago I was one of the select few that made it into Space and the first team to help America conquer the moon,” said Buzz Aldrin, General USAF, Doctor of Astronautics. “Back then, Space was the great unknown, and now we’ve never been closer to it. I can’t look up in the sky without seeing a satellite fly by. It’s remarkable to see how far the human race – and technology – has come.”

“It’s been 10 years since I last asked America “Can you hear me now?,” said Paul Marcarelli, the Original Verizon Test Man. “Back then dead zones were everywhere and it’s safe to say today they are only in the most remote places like the dark side of the moon. Verizon’s always been on a mission to give its customers the very best experience, anticipate their changing needs and drive innovation. Satellite is for sure the next frontier.”

Freedom to message anywhere with satellite-power.
Verizon engineers are relentlessly focused on providing the most reliable network experience for customers. Verizon’s network covers more than 99% of where people live, work and play, leaving very few places throughout the country where customers can’t connect. With the addition of satellite back-up to Verizon’s already robust network, Verizon is making the largest network even better.

Satellites play a crucial role in making connectivity with Verizon even more reliable, enabling text messaging in the few areas where traditional terrestrial-based cellular networks might not reach. Here’s how:

    • Customers with select devices have access to satellite messaging features to enhance connectivity in areas without cellular coverage, allowing customers to send an emergency SOS message and provide their location.
    • Verizon is collaborating with Skylo to make satellite messaging features and location detection available for customers with select Android devices.
    • And recently, AST SpaceMobile and Verizon announced a strategic partnership with a commitment of $100 million from Verizon, to provide direct-to-cellular AST SpaceMobile service when needed for Verizon customers.  The combination of Verizon’s highly reliable terrestrial mobile network, use of the multi-operator 850 Mhz band and AST’s commercial satellite array in low Earth orbit, is planned to enable cellular consumers to stay connected wherever they are, anywhere in the continental United States.

This week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted AST Special Temporary Authority (STA) authorizing beta service in the United States. This approval enables AST SpaceMobile’s first five commercial BlueBird satellites, operating in low Earth orbit today, to test satellite connections with Verizon smartphones supporting voice, full data and video applications, and other native cellular capabilities, without the need of any specialized software or device support or update.

Satellites provide reliable service in emergency situations.
Verizon utilizes nearly 300 satellite-based portable network assets to ensure connectivity where fiber cables are unavailable or compromised. These assets provide temporary network access for first responders and in areas with limited permanent infrastructure, or for linking cell sites to the broader network when fiber cables are compromised due to power outages or physical damage.

Satellite connections speed up delivery of service to customers in remote areas.
Verizon uses satellite connections as backhaul for cell sites in remote areas (like forests and mountain tops) where traditional wired connections like fiber are not yet available. Satellite connections can be set up quickly compared to laying fiber, particularly in areas with significant geographical or logistical barriers. This rapid deployment is a useful solution while fiber optics is being planned and deployed. This allows cell sites to be operational and provide service while waiting for the installation of a more robust and high-capacity connection.

  • The Evolution of IT Outsourcing: From Cost-Cutting to Strategic Partnership

The Evolution of IT Outsourcing: From Cost-Cutting to Strategic Partnership

In the early days of IT outsourcing, companies primarily turned to third-party service providers as a way to cut costs. By outsourcing routine tasks such as data entry, help desk support, and software development, businesses were able to reduce their operational expenses and focus on their core competencies.

However, as technology has advanced and the role of IT within organizations has become increasingly strategic, the nature of IT outsourcing has also evolved. Today, IT outsourcing is not just about saving money – it has become a strategic partnership that can drive innovation, improve efficiency, and help companies stay competitive in a rapidly changing digital landscape.

One of the key drivers of this shift is the increasing complexity of IT systems and the growing demand for specialized skills. As businesses embrace digital transformation and adopt new technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics, they require expertise that may not be readily available in-house. Outsourcing IT services allows companies to access the skills and resources they need to stay ahead of the curve without having to invest in expensive training or hiring.

Another factor driving the evolution of IT outsourcing is the need for agility and flexibility in today’s fast-paced business environment. Outsourcing allows companies to scale their IT operations up or down quickly in response to changing market conditions, without the long-term commitments associated with hiring full-time employees. This flexibility is essential for organizations looking to adapt to shifting customer demands, regulatory requirements, and technological disruptions.

In addition to cost savings and flexibility, strategic IT outsourcing can also provide companies with access to best practices, industry expertise, and innovative solutions that they may not have access to internally. By partnering with a trusted service provider, businesses can leverage the provider’s knowledge and experience to drive continuous improvement and optimize their IT operations.

Overall, the evolution of IT outsourcing from a cost-cutting measure to a strategic partnership reflects the changing role of IT within organizations and the increasing importance of technology in driving business success. By embracing outsourcing as a strategic tool for innovation, efficiency, and agility, companies can position themselves for long-term growth and competitiveness in the digital age.

Maximizing the Value of Your MSP Partnership: Tips for Effective Collaboration

In today’s fast-paced business world, it’s essential for companies to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. Many organizations are turning to Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to help them manage and optimize their IT infrastructure. But simply hiring an MSP isn’t enough – for maximum success, companies must actively collaborate with their MSP partner to ensure they are getting the most value out of the partnership.

Here are some tips for effective collaboration with your MSP partner:

    1. Clearly define goals and expectations: Before starting any partnership with an MSP, it’s crucial to clearly define your goals and expectations. What specific outcomes are you looking to achieve? What areas of your IT infrastructure do you need assistance with? By establishing a clear roadmap for success, both parties can ensure they are on the same page and working towards a common goal.

    2. Communicate regularly: Communication is key in any successful partnership. Make sure to schedule regular check-ins with your MSP partner to discuss progress, challenges, and any changes in goals or expectations. By maintaining open lines of communication, both parties can address issues quickly and work together to find solutions.

    3. Provide access to key stakeholders: To maximize the value of your MSP partnership, it’s important to provide access to key stakeholders within your organization. This includes executives, IT staff, and any other team members who will be directly involved in the partnership. By involving all relevant parties, you can ensure that everyone is aligned on goals and expectations, and that the partnership is effectively supporting your business objectives.

    4. Foster a collaborative culture: Collaboration is essential for the success of any partnership. Encourage a culture of collaboration within your organization and with your MSP partner. This includes sharing information, ideas, and feedback openly, and working together to solve problems and achieve common goals.

    5. Measure and track performance: To ensure you are getting the most value out of your MSP partnership, it’s important to measure and track performance regularly. Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress and success, and regularly review and analyze data to identify areas for improvement. By monitoring performance, both parties can make data-driven decisions to optimize the partnership and achieve desired outcomes.

By following these tips for effective collaboration with your MSP partner, you can maximize the value of your partnership and ensure that your IT infrastructure is optimized for success. Communication, collaboration, and a clear focus on goals and expectations are essential for building a strong and successful partnership with your MSP.

CM Punk on Triple H: “I think he’s receptive to other people’s ideas, whereas maybe Vince wasn’t. He was, ‘I’m the boss, we’re doing this and this is how we’re doing it.’ That’s great. If you run a company, you need somebody who is the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ man, and the final say.”

On Triple H surrounding himself with genius wrestling minds: Triple H thinks he’s surrounded, and oftentimes is, but a lot of really genius wrestling minds. • University of Minnesota, Essentia Health announce healthcare partnership

The partners describe a “bold vision to write the next chapter of healthcare” for “all Minnesotans.”

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota has found a new healthcare partner in Essentia Health.

In a news release, the two organizations described their new partnership as a “bold vision to write the next chapter of healthcare for, and to best serve the healthcare needs of, all Minnesotans.”

The announcement comes more than a year after the U of M’s current healthcare partner, Fairview Health Services, said it would not renew its healthcare partnership with the university when it expires at the end of 2026.

According to the news release, the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health are looking to create a new non-profit with four key goals:

    • Address the most urgent healthcare needs of the state in new ways — for today and the future,
    • Build on the strengths of the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health to lead and operate this new entity,
    • Serve the needs of current and future patients and help educate the next generation of health professionals,
    • Ensure the future of academic medicine in Minnesota and provide essential financial support to the University of Minnesota Medical School.

The partners said their shared goal is to confront significant healthcare challenges in Minnesota and the U.S. as a whole, including rising costs, declining reimbursement and limited access to care. The announcement notes the organizations hope to deliver healthcare “closer to home,” particularly in rural and Tribal communities where healthcare options have declined in recent years.

The proposal includes a $1 billion strategic investment over five years “to bring this vision to life.”

“Our state’s healthcare providers and leaders, as well as everyday Minnesotans, have said loud and clear that we need a healthcare transformation in Minnesota to increase access to care and keep patients close to home with high-quality care,” said University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham in a statement. “We agree, it is time to forge a new path forward and deliver a solution for all Minnesotans. This bold new path would shift us away from business as usual and position us to join with Minnesotans in the years ahead to address our state’s challenges head-on and deliver real transformational solutions in healthcare.”

The announcement states that current doctor-patient relationships would not change while providing “increased access to cutting-edge diagnostics, advanced treatments, specialized care, and innovative clinical trials taking place every day.”

“This is the beginning of an exciting, ambitious — and critically needed — conversation about the future of care in our state,” said Essentia Health CEO Dr. David Herman in a statement. “Essentia Health has a long and committed partnership with the University of Minnesota. With nearly 70 percent of all Minnesota physicians having been trained at the University, we know that continuing to deliver excellent patient outcomes while building a sustainable healthcare future rests on the foundation of a strong medical school. These are key reasons why Essentia leadership has begun exploring opportunities to build a new framework for healthcare in Minnesota.”

University President Rebecca Cunningham said discussions are underway with current partner Fairview about the U’s new healthcare vision.

“We are at an inflection point in our relationship with Fairview Health Services that requires an urgent and innovative solution,” Cunningham said in a statement. “We envision this model as a new path forward in our relationship, one that builds on the momentum all those at M Health Fairview have built and that continues to put patients first, consistent with our organizations’ shared priorities. We have begun conversations and invite further discussion with Fairview to bring this concept to life for Minnesota.”

University of Minnesota and Essentia Health have officially announced a new partnership that aims to enhance healthcare services for patients in the region. This collaboration will combine the research and academic expertise of the University of Minnesota with the clinical excellence of Essentia Health to improve patient outcomes and advance medical knowledge.

The partnership will focus on a variety of initiatives, including expanding access to specialty care, optimizing care delivery, and advancing medical education and research. By working together, both organizations hope to create a more seamless healthcare experience for patients and improve the overall health of the communities they serve.

This partnership represents a significant step forward in healthcare innovation and collaboration in the region. Both the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health are committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care, and this partnership will further strengthen their ability to achieve this goal.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting partnership and the impact it will have on healthcare in the region.

  • Andy Murray: Novak Djokovic hails Australian Open semi-final spot as ‘huge win’ for new coaching partnership | Tennis News

Novak Djokovic says he feels more connected with new coach Andy Murray with every passing day after the record 24-time Grand Slam champion booked a place in the last four of the Australian Open.

Djokovic, 37, overcame world No 3 Alcaraz in a thrilling quarter-final clash, battling back from a set down to clinch a 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 victory which he celebrated wildly with Murray on Rod Laver Arena.

The former British No 1 and his old Grand Slam rival are teaming up for the first time at a major tournament together, and Djokovic was full of praise for his new coach after confirming a semi-final spot in Melbourne.

The best of the action from the Australian Open quarter-final as Djokovic fought back to beat Alcaraz

“This was a huge win for all of us, including Andy and myself, for the relationship,” Djokovic said. “That’s why I went to him [to celebrate], because I just felt very grateful that he’s there.

“I feel more and more connected with Andy every day. We face challenges… people don’t see that obviously; we try to make the most out of every day and grow together.

“He’s been as committed to my career and this tournament as he can be. So it was kind of a gesture of appreciation, respect for him, and the fact that he’s out there – and he doesn’t need to be.

“He’s giving all his support to me, to the whole team, and trying to make it work.”

Murray joked he is hoping to sabotage Djokovic’s chances of winning another Australian Open after being beaten by the Serb on several occasions in Melbourne

Djokovic admits he is ‘concerned’ over leg injury

A potential concern for Djokovic going forward is a left-leg injury that required treatment during the opening set against Alcaraz, one which saw him admit in his on-court interview that, had he lost the second set, “I don’t know if I would have continued playing”.

After taking on some painkillers towards the end of the first set, Djokovic only improved physically as the match wore on before fading a touch as he served things out in the fourth.

Benefitting from an extra day’s rest before what is a landmark 50th career Grand Slam semi-final for him – up against world No 2 Alexander Zverev – the Serb said he will be ready mentally, provided his body holds up its end of the bargain.

“The extra day with no match comes at a good time,” Djokovic said. “As I said on the court, I have to assess the situation tomorrow when I wake up. I will try to do as much as I possibly can with my recovery team.

Djokovic struggled with an injury during the first set and for early parts of the second before he battled back to beat Alcaraz

“I’m concerned, to be honest, physically. But if I manage somehow to be physically good enough, I think mentally, emotionally I’m as motivated as I can be.

“Almost three and a half, four hours of incredible battle, of high intensity, of course takes its toll. At the same time I think it has more toll on the physical side rather than mental and emotional.

“Actually it feels like you’re feeding off this kind of win. That’s how I feel now.

“I don’t think I’m going to have, mentally or emotionally, any issue to face Zverev or to motivate myself.”

Djokovic on Alcaraz win: I wish it was the final

Finally, Djokovic – who failed to win one of the four Slams in 2024, for only the second time since 2011 (2017) – spoke of his joy at continuing to compete, and beat, some of the game’s rising stars.

Alcaraz is himself a four-time Grand Slam champion aged just 21, with two of those victories coming in Wimbledon finals against the Serb.

    Major milestones for Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is only the second male or female in the Open Era to reach 50 singles semi-finals at Grand Slam events, after Chris Evert (52).

Djokovic has reached a 12th men’s semi-final at the Australian Open, trailing only Roger Federer (15) for the most at the event in the Open Era.

Djokovic has reached an eighth semi-final at a Grand Slam event since turning 35, trailing only Ken Rosewall (10).

Djokovic holds an 8-4 record head-to-head against Alexander Zverev at ATP level, with Djokovic winning their last meeting at Grand Slam level, in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2021.

“It’s just a great win. I’m very proud of it,” Djokovic said. “I’m just pleased with the way I was able to play, against one of the two or three best players in the world in the last three, four years.

“Carlos brings so much energy and intensity on the court. He always demands the best of his opponent in order to have a chance to win against him. I knew that coming into the match.

“Every set was super close. The crowd was into it, so much energy on the court. It was amazing.

“It felt like it was final of a Slam, to be honest I wish it was (smiling).”
