When the 136th Rose Parade winds its way through Pasadena on New Year’s Day, Mayor Victor M. Gordo will share his ride along the route in a piece of American history with his family and some very special guests: Pasadena residents Terry and Rebecca Crews, and iconic Dodgers broadcaster Jaime Jarrín, accompanied by Jaime’s son Jorge and daughter-in-law Maggie.

The Mayor and his guests will travel the parade route in a restored 1925 White Motor Co. bus, known as #176, that once shuttled tourists through Yellowstone National Park. The vehicle, which served the park until the late 1930s, has had several owners, including casino magnate Bill Harrah, before being acquired by its current owner, Page Whyte, in 2004. Despite accumulating several inches of dust, it only needed a thorough cleaning, new tires, and a new battery. After adding fresh gasoline, it started right up.

Terry Crews, currently the host of NBC’s top rated alternative series “America’s Got Talent,” which is in its seventeenth season, is an author, action-movie hero, sitcom star, children’s book illustrator, advertising pitchman, playable video game character, talent show host, high-end furniture designer, and human rights activist. A three-time People Magazine Sexiest Man Alive actor, he has starred as a series regular in three consecutive TV series surpassing 100 episodes: NBC’s Golden Globe Award-winning series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Are We There Yet?” and “Everybody Hates Chris.” Crews is set to star in “Tales of the Walking Dead” and hosts “America’s Got Talent” spinoffs “AGT Champions” and “AGT Extreme.”

After several years in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles, where he painted portraits of teammates to supplement his income, Crews turned to performing arts. He will be starring in and executive producing a CBS comedy pilot based on the long-running comic strip JumpStart.

In October 2024, Rebecca Crews opened her flagship store in the Old Pasadena shopping district, following her December 2021 launch of a clothing, cosmetics, and accessories line at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Her brand is a mix of classic and contemporary, suited for powerful and feminine women everywhere who want to look and feel their best.

The Crews are active philanthropists, supporting organizations including RISE US, Stand Up to Cancer, and The Worldwide Salvation Army. Rebecca is a regular contributor to various charities and organizations worldwide that feed the poor, serve women and children, and support families in need. They are particularly involved in advocacy against sex trafficking and sexual assault, having spoken at many events supporting victims of sex trafficking, sexual assault, so as to change the narrative around the issue, holding perpetrators accountable through legislation and awareness. The couple has five children and one grandchild.

“Rebecca and I are beyond excited to be a part of the 2025 Rose Parade!” said Terry Crews. “As longtime Pasadena residents, this iconic celebration holds a special place in our hearts. It’s an honor to be included in such a cherished tradition that brings creativity, joy, and community spirit to life. We can’t wait to celebrate alongside our neighbors and share the magic of Pasadena with millions around the world. Let’s make this year’s parade unforgettable!”

Jarrín, who served as the Dodgers’ Spanish-language broadcaster for 64 years, will be joined by his son Jorge, a former LA radio personality and Dodger broadcaster, and Jorge’s wife of 43 years, Maggie.

The Jarrín family has deep roots in the area, having lived in Pasadena, Altadena, and San Marino since 1962.

“We are thrilled to be joining Mayor Victor Gordo, along with his family to ring in 2025. Mayor Gordo is a friend and has been an outstanding Mayor and we are proud to make the ride down Colorado Boulevard with him,” states Jorge.

Though retired from broadcasting, the elder Jarrín maintains his position as the longest-serving Dodgers employee, having joined the organization in 1959. Jorge now leads the family’s nonprofit, the Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation, which has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships to economically challenged youth.

Mayor Gordo said plans for the ride have been brewing for some time.

“For a couple of years now, Terry, Rebecca and I have talked about riding down Colorado Blvd. together and we will finally have that opportunity. Terry and Rebecca: here we go!” said Mayor Gordo. “Jaime Jarrín is a kind and humble friend and it will be an honor to have him, Jorge and Maggie ride with us. As a Spanish-speaking immigrant, I recall, vividly, listening to his eloquent and poetic call of Dodger games and beaming with pride. It is an honor to have these good friends join Kelly, Emma, Michael and me as we welcome 2025 in Pasadena on the Best Day Ever!”

The Rose Parade travels 5.5 miles down Colorado Boulevard and features four types of entries: floral-decorated floats entered by a participating corporation, nonprofit organization or municipality; equestrian units; bands; and Tournament entries.

  • Who are Kiesza and Aloe Blacc? The 2025 Rose Parade opening performers, explained – Pasadena Star News

Who are Kiesza and Aloe Blacc? The 2025 Rose Parade opening performers, explained – Pasadena Star News

On Wednesday morning, Jan. 1, singers Kiesza and Aloe Blacc will kick off the 2025 Rose Parade with musical performances atop the float by Honda, where they’ll be accompanied by a synchronized light show, pyrotechnics and dancers galore.

The Tournament of Roses announced the pair on Dec. 11 as the newest musical talents to begin the parade, a slot held by David Archuleta, Cassadee Pope, Michelle Williams and Rush Davis during last year’s parade.

If it’s the first you’re hearing of the performers — or you need a refresher — here’s who they are, what they’re known for and what they’re up to now:

    Kiesza

The Canadian-born, 35-year-old singer and instrumentalist is best known for her 2014 hit “Hideaway,” which dominated global charts at the time of its release and holds over 347,000,000 streams on Spotify.

That happens to be the song she’s slated to perform during the parade, where she’ll be joined by 20 dancers in shimmering reflective costumes during a reprised version of the song with “renewed energy for the global audience,” organizers said. She’ll also perform a glimpse of her Billboard No. 1 hit, “I Go Dance,” while in the backdrop, extreme acrobats on jumping stilts will perform.

Once a folk singer, Kiesza primarily produces up-tempo dance music, which is the genre of both her released albums; 2014’s “Sound of a Woman” and 2020’s “Crave.” In 2018, she was featured on Dreamworks’ “Home” soundtrack with her song “Cannonball.

Most recently, Kiesza released her 2024 EP “Dancing and Crying: Vol. 1” and has been sharing her journey to the Rose Parade stage on her Instagram.

    Aloe Blacc

After Kiesza, it’s Aloe Blacc’s turn to take the float stage. He will perform his “Wake Me Up”— a global mega-hit by the late Avicii, in which Blacc was the co-writer and vocalist.

Born in Orange County, the 45-year-old singer and rapper got his start in indie rap group Emanon, comprised of himself and hip hop producer Exile in 1995.

Blacc launched his solo career in 2003 and hit his first major success with the 2010 song, “I Need a Dollar,” which has since grossed nearly 285,000,000 streams on Spotify. Other hits include 2013’s “The Man” and, more recently, a country version of “Wake Me Up,” which Blacc released with country-singer Cooper Alan in November of 2024.

Today, Blacc boasts over 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify and recently announced his upcoming residency at New York City venue Blue Note.

Kiesza and Aloe Blacc are two talented musicians who will be kicking off the 2025 Rose Parade with a bang. Kiesza, a Canadian singer-songwriter known for her infectious pop hits like “Hideaway” and “Giant in My Heart,” will bring her energetic stage presence and powerhouse vocals to the parade route. Aloe Blacc, on the other hand, is an American singer and rapper best known for his soulful tracks like “I Need a Dollar” and “The Man.” Together, these two artists are sure to get the crowd pumped up and ready for a day of celebration and festivities. Don’t miss their performance at the opening of the Rose Parade – it’s sure to be a show-stopping start to the day!

Inside the Marathon Mission Behind Today’s Stealth Bomber Flyovers – Pasadena Now

A Northrop Grumman B-2 Stealth Bomber flies over Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena heralding the beginning of the 2022 Rose Parade on January 1, 2022. [Shutterstock]

[UPDATED] While millions of spectators, both watching television and in person along Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard, will glimpse the B-2 Spirit bomber for just 30 seconds at the step off of the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day 2025, the dramatic flyover represents the culmination of a complex 15-hour mission involving thousands of military personnel. The aircraft will make two separate appearances – first at the parade at approximately 8:00 a.m., then later at 2 p.m. for the College Football Playoff Rose Bowl game between Oregon and Ohio State.

This year’s flyovers mark the stealth bomber’s second return to the Rose Parade following its temporary grounding in 2023, when B-1B Lancers handled the flyover duties.

Pasadena Now spoke to the pilots, who remained anonymous and went by their radio call signs.

“Imagine the complexity of bringing four airplanes together from different directions, at different heights, all traveling at 6 miles a minute and eventually getting within 12 feet of each other for refueling,” explains one of the pilots, identified by the call sign SHIP, describing the precision required during mid-air refueling operations with KC-135 tankers.

For the three B-2 pilots executing the flyover, the mission carries deep personal significance.

“I’ve been dreaming to perform this flyover since I was a sleepy small boy sitting in my pajamas on the living room floor watching it,” SHIP says. “To now over 20 years later, I’m honored to have the chance to inspire young future pilots who will be watching from their homes.”

The emotional significance extends to family connections – SHIP’s grandfather, a retired Naval Aviator living in Los Angeles, will witness his grandson’s flyover.

The operation begins 24 hours before the flyover at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, home of the 509th Bomb Wing which operates the B-2 fleet.

“The 24 hours prior to the flyover involves thousands at Whiteman AFB preparing the B-2s like a bee hive of activity,” SHIP notes.

For pilot ZEN, himself a former college football player, the Rose Bowl mission holds special meaning.

“Being a former College football player, it is quite surreal for me to be a part of the Rose Bowl and Tournament of Roses tradition… The Rose Bowl in my mind is the absolute highlight of any college football season,” he says.

Planning begins a month in advance, with crews mapping every second of the operation while coordinating with ground crews, parade officials, and refueling aircraft. They must account for variables like Southern California’s winter morning marine layer and prepare for various contingencies.

“We try and look at every variable we can imagine as we plan the mission, so there is nothing that goes unaccounted for,” ZEN explains. “The precise flyovers people will see for the parade and game is a result of days of planning by the crews well before the planes are overhead.”

The B-2 Spirit, a strategic bomber with a 172-foot wingspan capable of flying 6,000 nautical miles unrefueled, represents significant military capabilities. At Whiteman AFB, approximately 5,600 military personnel and 2,000 civilians support its operations.

“Airmen from Team Whiteman, from every unit, job, specialty, background, and walk of life, are proud to take part in this magnificent event and are proud to highlight the incredible capability of the B-2,” says pilot DUKE.

The mission carries additional weight as one of the B-2’s final appearances before its scheduled replacement by the B-21 Raider in the 2030s.

“As with all things the B-2 does, there is no room for error. We stand on the shoulders of giants!” DUKE emphasizes, highlighting the pressure to maintain perfect execution.

For the pilots, the mission represents both the fulfillment of childhood dreams and the continuation of an inspiring tradition.

“I remember watching the B-2 flyover the Tournament of Roses as a kid, so being selected to take part is a dream come true,” DUKE reflects, underscoring how the tradition has inspired multiple generations of aviation professionals.

The U.S. Air Force’s stealth bomber flyovers have become a popular event at major sporting events and ceremonies, captivating audiences with their speed, precision, and stealth technology. But what goes on behind the scenes to make these flyovers possible?

In a recent interview with Pasadena Now, members of the U.S. Air Force revealed the intricate planning and coordination that goes into executing these flyovers. It all starts with the mission planning team, who carefully select the route, timing, and altitude for the flyover to ensure maximum visibility and safety.

The team also works closely with air traffic control, event organizers, and local authorities to secure airspace and ensure that the flyover runs smoothly. Weather conditions are closely monitored, and backup plans are in place in case of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Pilots undergo rigorous training and preparation to execute the flyover with precision and skill. They must navigate through crowded airspace, maintain a precise altitude and speed, and execute complex maneuvers with split-second timing.

The result is a breathtaking display of military prowess and precision, as the stealth bomber streaks across the sky, leaving audiences in awe. The flyovers serve as a powerful reminder of the U.S. Air Force’s capabilities and commitment to protecting the nation.

So next time you witness a stealth bomber flyover, remember the dedication and skill of the men and women behind the scenes who make it all possible. It truly is a marvel of modern military technology and precision.

  • Billie Jean King’s path to grand marshal – Pasadena Star News

Billie Jean King’s path to grand marshal – Pasadena Star News

On Wednesday morning, Jan. 1, Billie Jean King and her wife, Ilana Kloss, will step into a 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III, for a ride like no other.

With 50 million people across the globe tuning in, she’ll take a 5.5-mile slow drive along Colorado Boulevard, waving to thousands in person gathered to watch the 136th Tournament of Roses Parade.

In an era when many yearn for long lost heroes who fought the battles that changed society for the good, on Wednesday in that old classic car, millions have the chance to see one — alive, smiling, happy, still pushing the boundaries for a more fair world: Sports and civil rights trailblazer. Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal.

Of course, for Billie Jean King, millions tuning in to watch her do something special is not a new thing. Think Wimbledon, or her multiple other tennis Grand Slam titles. Think “Battles of the Sexes” in 1973, when in one giant match, she proved a man wrong that the women’s game was somehow inferior to men’s. Think Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

“You have no idea how excited I am, this is like a dream come true,” King has said of the moment, remembering when as a young girl how she and her mother Betty made a big deal of watching the parade.

That was back in Long Beach, long before the accomplishments and the accolades. That’s where then Billie Jean Moffitt was born to a firefighter and a homemaker.

It was 1940s, World War II America, unified by the war, one where you could see early glimpses of change in what remained a society whose power structures were dominated by men. Women found themselves needed in the workplace to replace men who went to the war.

It foreshadowed the larger change — and the forces against that change — that would be the context for King’s trailblazing life.

It was a path forged with a tennis raquet on the public courts in Long Beach. A graduate of Poly High School whose roots in Long Beach run deep, she fell in love with tennis at 11, when she bought her first racket.

“I am going to be No. 1 in the world,” Billie Jean told her mother, Betty.

“My parents raised two highly competitive athletes and yet they never cared whether we won or lost,” she told Southern California News Group columnist Rich Archbold in 2023. “Instead, they encouraged us to do our best always.”

But there was something else. As talented and hardworking as King was, the unequal standards for women, in contrast to men, playing the game did not sit well with King as she attempted to climb the latter of professional sports.

There was the time early on in the 1950s, at a tournament at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, when she was barred from a group picture of junior tennis players. Why? Because she wore the tennis shorts her mom made for her instead of the traditional tennis dress that female players wore.

It was yet another glimpse at things to come on her journey.

Even as a young teen, the injustice fueled her. From Long Beach to her college years at Cal State Los Angeles (1961 to 1964) to Wimbledon, hers became a career of breaking social barriers, even as she won tennis matches.

The career highlights are undeniably stunning.

When she was only 17, she won her first women’s doubles title at Wimbledon. In her career, she won 39 Grand Slam singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles.

Between 1961 and 1979, she won a record 20 Wimbledon titles, 13 U.S. titles (including four singles), four French Open titles (one singles), and two Australian Open titles (one singles).

And what year 1972 was: The U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon – three Grand Slams in a year.

She spent six years as the top-ranked female tennis player in the world.

But all the while, tennis was a stage for something bigger.

She pushed for equal prize money in the men’s and women’s games. He online biography notes that in 1970 she joined the Virginia Slims Tour for women, and in 1971 became the first woman athlete to earn over $100,000 in prize money. Still, when she won the U.S. Open in 1972, King received $15,000 less than the then men’s champion, Ilie Năstase.

She was instrumental in campaigning for equal prize money for female tennis players and pushed for the passage of Title IX, a federal law that provides equal funding for men’s and women’s sports programs prohibits discrimination based on sex or gender in schools and colleges.

Her legendary “Battle of the Sexes” victory in 1973 against Bobby Riggs, a former men’s world No. 1 player, had more than 90 million people watching worldwide.

The result: 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 and a victory on the march toward sporting equity.

At the top of her game that year, she led the formation of the Women’s Tennis Association and became its first president. The inclusive World Team Team Tennis would follow, as well as the Women’s Sports Foundation, with a mission of promoting girls access to sports.

The barriers would keep coming, and King would keep facing them down. By 1981, she was outed as a lesbian, and lost her endorsement deals. But by 1987, she would be elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and in 2006, the USTA National Tennis Center in New York was re-christened as at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

She retired in 1990, a giant on the court and off.

    Fast forward to today.

As she told Archbold in 2023, she still remembers when she decided years ago to make the world a better place.

“I decided that I wanted to help all people,” she said, “all human beings.”

Besides her work in sports and advocacy, King is also a lover of books and her hometown city’s public libraries – making her a perfect namesake for Long Beach’s Billie Jean King Main Library in downtown, which was named in the legend’s honor in 2019.

Aside from extolling her support for public parks (where she first learned to play tennis), and local schools she attended, King said she maintains ties to the City of Angels as part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the women’s professional soccer team, Angel City FC.

King accepted the honor of being the 2025 Rose Parade grand marshal on Oct. 7 from the steps of the Tournament House in Pasadena, where she made a grand entrance to Elton John’s song, “Philadelphia Freedom,” a song John famously wrote in her honor in 1975.

“Being from Long Beach and growing up in Southern California I have fond memories of watching the parade with my family and I am deeply honored to be named Grand Marshal of the 2025 Rose Parade,” King said on Oct. 7. “This parade is a wonderful celebration of joy and community, and it truly represents the ‘Best Day Ever’ for all who attend or watch.”

Superlatives certainly apply to the Hall of Famer, named by Life magazine as one of the “100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century.” She was the first woman athlete to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and became the first individual woman athlete to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award from the U.S. Congress.

Tournament of Roses President Ed Morales picked King as grand marshal.

“Her trailblazing work has elevated women in sports and inspired countless best days ever for athletes and fans around the globe,” he said.

She joins a roster of past grand marshals that include Frank Sinatra, Shirley Temple, Vin Scully, Walt Disney, Jane Goodall and Jackie Robinson. Last year’s honorary parade leader was Broadway star Audra McDonald.

Looking over a list of past grand marshals – including Pasadena’s own Jackie Robinson, said she will do her best to represent the city and its New Year’s Day tradition.

Ultimately, it comes down to some basic stuff, she said, referencing the 2025 Rose Parade theme, “Best Day Ever!”

“I have a whole new saying now,” King said of the theme. “It reminds us of the importance of living in the present every day and making time for the people you love. I cannot wait for Jan. 1, for the best day ever.”

The City of Pasadena announced Colorado Boulevard will close to motor vehicles earlier than in prior years for the 2025 Tournament of Roses Parade, with closures beginning at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31.

The changes aim to provide additional time for parade staging and preparation, with the boulevard remaining closed through the conclusion of staging and clean-up following the parade.

The closure will affect Colorado Boulevard through downtown Pasadena until approximately 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1.

Officials have designated several alternate routes to help manage traffic flow during the closure period (See map above)

Motorists can use Walnut Street or the 210 freeway for east-west travel north of Colorado Boulevard, while Del Mar Boulevard or Cordova Street serve as southern alternatives.

The City has established specific crossing points for north-south travel between 10 p.m. on December 31 and 6 a.m. on January 1, with crossing locations noted on the official map.

A New Year’s Eve 5K race at midnight Tuesday will create additional temporary closures from Pasadena Avenue to Hill Street. Eight major intersections along the race route will close to cross traffic at 11 p.m. and reopen at the end of the race: Pasadena Avenue, El Molino Avenue, Fair Oaks Avenue, Marengo Avenue, Los Robles Avenue, El Molino Avenue, Lake Avenue, and Wilson Avenue.

Property owners and merchants along Colorado Boulevard planning to host events, viewing parties, or expecting vendor deliveries must ensure their guests and vendors arrive before the 10 p.m. closure. Those unable to arrive before closure must park in areas without restricted parking and walk to their destinations.

For assistance during the event, residents can call (626) 577-6426 for questions about towed vehicles between 5 p.m. on December 31, 2024, and 6 p.m. on January 1, 2025.

For questions about closures and access, the Visitor Hotline is available at (877) 793-9911.

Your ultimate guide to watching from home – Pasadena Star News

The streets of Pasadena, Calif., are once again preparing for the annual floral spectacle that is the Rose Parade. On the docket are impressively-decorated floats, new and nostalgic musical performances, beloved traditions and, fittingly, hundreds of thousands of roses on display.

If you’re looking to tune in from home, staff at The Pasadena Star-News compiled a list of everything you need to know as you watch the 136th iteration of the floral extravaganza.

    How to watch

The parade is set to begin at 8 a.m. PST on New Year’s Day. On TV, several channels will be broadcasting the parade, and you can find your Rose Parade viewing options here.

No TV or cable? No problem! For the first time, the staff at the Pasadena Star-News will live-stream the parade on its YouTube channel, beginning at 10 a.m. PST. The stream will be stationed around where the floats fold to make their way under the 210 freeway bridge, making it a unique viewing experience not typically seen on TV.

Also, if you’re on the social platform X, be sure to follow @PasStarNews for live behind-the-scenes posts and answers to your questions.

    The floats

From post-military life to the cinematic sensation Wicked to one accompanied by the first-ever all-electric fleet in parade history, there are plenty of floats on the docket this year that are sure to be talkers.

If you’re hoping to catch a specific float or want details on hand as you watch, check out our guide to every Rose Parade float, band and equestrian unit, in order.

    The musical performances

Kiesza and Aloe Blacc will kick off 2025’s musical performances during the parade’s Opening Spectacular. Kiesza will reprise “Hideaway,” a hit that dominated global charts a decade ago, with renewed energy for the global audience, organizers said. Aloe Blacc will perform his “Wake Me Up”— a global mega-hit with the late Avicii.

On a float stage backdrop of a towering Elvis Presley and B.B. King, the Rose Parade mid-parade performance will be a tribute to a deep musical legacy. Brandon Bennett, bringing a fusion of country and gospel influences, will perform alongside Chapel Hart, an emerging group of performers who mix country, rock and soul.

Performing in the Rose Parade Grand Finale is ’80s teen hitmaker and Broadway sensation Debbie Gibson. Gibson confirmed she will “pack a lot in” to the performance.

“I get to showcase all my skills in a very short amount of time; in a very dramatic and theatrical way.”

Several marching bands will also display their talents during the parade, and you can see the full line-up here. Tip: Watch the creative ways some bands maneuver around the corners on the parade routes.

    The tradition

The 2025 Rose Parade theme is “Best Day Ever!” Every float, band and performance in the coming extravaganza along the 5.5-mile route has been designed with the theme in mind — and you can read about how the parade leaders came to the theme here.

Sports equity icon Billie Jean King is slated as the 2025 Rose Parade grand marshal. The tennis legend, lauded post-retirement for her work promoting gender equality on and off the sports field, will lead off the parade and the following 111th Rose Bowl game, both on Jan. 1.

This year’s Rose Queen is 17-year-old Lindsay Charles, a Pasadena local who is passionate about connecting with her community, sustainability and track and field.

    The big game

Ohio State will face No. 1 Oregon at this year’s Rose Bowl game with kickoff at 2 p.m. PST, Monday, Jan. 1.

  • 2025 Rose Parade to roll through Pasadena on New Year’s Day

2025 Rose Parade to roll through Pasadena on New Year’s Day

It is time, once again, to test the mettle of those petals.

The 136th Rose Parade is set to kick off at 8 a.m. PST on New Year’s Day and roll along 5.5 miles of Pasadena streets before an anticipated crowd of hundreds of thousands.

Celebrating this year’s parade theme of “Best Day Ever,” some 32 floats, 20 marching bands and 16 equestrian groups will traverse Colorado Boulevard, through the heart of Old Pasadena.

“The 2025 theme celebrates life’s best moments — those unexpected times that bring a smile, warm our hearts and fill us with joy…. Together, we celebrate where we’ve been and what we look forward to. It’s about family, friends, and community and what we have to celebrate — and to be thankful for,” Tournament of Roses President Ed Morales said in a statement.

The new year’s parade grand marshal is Billie Jean King, the tennis icon and gender equality activist who won 20 Wimbledon titles, 39 Grand Slam titles, and drew an audience of 90 million people worldwide for the televised 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” match in which she beat onetime national tennis champion Bobby Riggs.

When she was announced as the parade’s grand marshal in October, King, a Long Beach native, said it “is like a dream come true.”

“As a child, the annual Tournament of Roses Parade was a big deal in our home,” said King, 81. “We used to talk about it all year long. … We looked forward to it every single year.”

The Rose Parade started in 1890 as a promotional event by the Valley Hunt Club, a social organization, to show off Pasadena’s famously mild winter weather.

“In New York, people are buried in snow. Here, our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let’s hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise,” Charles F. Holder, one of the parade’s originators, said at one of the club’s meetings as the parade was being planned for the first time, according to the Tournament of Roses.

The earliest “floats” were horse-drawn carriages adorned with flowers.

Today’s massive, motorized floats, which take months to build, must be entirely covered by natural materials such as flower petals, bark, beans, corn husks, seeds and leaves. They travel an average of 2.5 mph, according to the Tournament of Roses.

As for the weather forecast in Pasadena on this New Year’s Day?

“All in all, it should be a pretty perfect day,” said Mike Wofford, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

People camping along Colorado Boulevard should prepare for temperatures to dip into the low- to mid-40s overnight before warming to the mid- to high-50s during the parade, Wofford said.

The 2021 Rose Parade was canceled for the first time since World War II because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It returned to a smaller crowd in 2022, but attendance has been growing in the years since.

Candy Carlson, a spokeswoman for the Tournament of Roses, said in a statement to The Times that about 750,000 people lined the route in 2024, compared with about 700,000 in 2022, indicating a “strong return” to pre-pandemic crowd sizes.

“The consistent growth in attendance underscores the Rose Parade’s enduring appeal and the joy it brings to our community and visitors from around the world,” she said. “We’re confident this year’s parade will continue to draw a vibrant and engaged audience.”

Get ready for a blooming good time as the 2025 Rose Parade makes its way through Pasadena on New Year’s Day! This iconic event, known for its stunning floral floats and marching bands, is sure to dazzle and delight spectators of all ages.

Mark your calendars for January 1, 2025, and stake out your spot along the parade route to catch a glimpse of the spectacular displays and performances. From intricately designed floats adorned with thousands of fresh flowers to the sounds of talented musicians and dancers, the Rose Parade is a feast for the senses.

So grab your friends and family, pack a picnic, and join in the celebration as we ring in the new year with this time-honored tradition. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of the magic of the 2025 Rose Parade in Pasadena!
