  • Philadelphia plane crash today updates: Crew members, passengers killed in medical jet crash identified

PHILADELPHIA — We have now learned the names of all six people aboard a medical jet who perished when the plane crashed into a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood on Friday evening.

Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales and Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez have been identified as the pilot and co-pilot of the flight.

Paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla and Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo were also aboard the plane.

Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla and Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo have been identified as those on board the medical jet.

Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla and Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo have been identified as those on board the medical jet.

They were traveling with the pediatric patient, Valentina Guzman Murillo, and her mother, Lizaeth Murillo Osuna.

Valentina Guzman Murillo was in Philadelphia to receive care from Shriners Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

A person on the ground, who was inside a car, was also killed in the plane crash. That person’s name has not been released.

In an update Sunday, Mayor Cherelle Parker said that 22 people were injured. Of those, five people remain hospitalized, with three of them in critical condition.

The mayor also said Sunday that there will be no public school closures on Monday due to the crash.

The jet took off at 6:06 p.m. Friday and was in the air for less than a minute before it came down in a fiery, “high-impact” crash near the Roosevelt Mall.

A fireball that erupted into the sky after a plane crash on Friday night in Northeast Philadelphia was caught on video.

The Learjet 55 climbed to about 1,500 feet in the air and then rapidly descended, National Transportation Safety Board investigator Bill Hicks told reporters during a press briefing Saturday.

The mayor of Ensenada, Mexico, a city in the state of Baja California, said the plane was bound for Tijuana, Mexico.

There was no indication of a problem radioed from the flight deck of the jet back to Air Traffic Control before the crash, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told reporters. “In fact, in the recording that we have, there is an attempt by air traffic controllers to get a response from the flight crew that they didn’t receive,” she said.

The NTSB has classified the crash as an accident.

The “high-impact” crash left debris scattered across four to five city blocks, Homendy said. Investigators have yet to recover the jet’s black box, which she said may have been damaged or destroyed.

“It could be intact,” she said. “But likely it is damaged. It may be fragmented.”

Video from inside a diner show people ducking for cover as debris flies from the plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia.

Philadelphia residents or business owners who find debris should email the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov, Homendy said.

Earlier, the mayor said residents could also call 911 if they come across airplane debris.

Investigators will spend several days and, possibly, weeks collecting debris from the scene, the NTSB chair said.

At least five homes caught fire in the aftermath of the crash, Philadelphia officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

The crash of the medical jet came just two days after an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with a regional American Airlines jet near Reagan National Airport just outside Washington, D.C., killing 67 people.

Homendy said her agency is able to carry out both investigations simultaneously.

“We are a highly skilled agency,” she said, adding that it’s not unusual for the board to investigate two incidents.

In a message posted on social media platform X, U.S. Transportation Sean Duffy called the back-to-back disasters a “heart-wrenching week.”

Regarding the Philadelphia crash, Duffy said, “We’re not going to have answers right away. It’s going to take time. But as I get those answers, I’m going to share it with all of you.”

  • Spirit Airlines not allowing passengers with inappropriate clothing, tattoos to fly

Spirit Airlines has updated its policy to include a stricter dress code for passengers.

The update, which became effective on Jan. 22, says a passenger can be denied boarding or removed from a flight because of their clothing or offensive tattoos.

The additions to the contract now specify that passengers who are inadequately clothed, such as wearing see-through clothing that exposes breasts, buttocks, or other private parts, are subject to being grounded.

The contract also makes clear that passengers may not be barefoot, which is a policy on other airlines as well. Another addition to Spirit’s policy, the appearance of offensive tattoos, is not a common cause for removal.

The new policy comes after clothing infractions have reportedly caused issues for some Spirit passengers.

In October of last year, two women were removed for wearing crop tops on the airline. Last week, a man from Texas was removed from a Spirit flight for wearing what was deemed an offensive hoodie. The passenger eventually removed the article of clothing but was still escorted from the plane.

Fox Business has reached out to Spirit for comment.

Attention all passengers: Spirit Airlines has implemented a new policy regarding appropriate clothing and tattoos for those looking to fly with us.

In an effort to maintain a family-friendly and respectful environment for all travelers, Spirit Airlines will not allow passengers with inappropriate clothing or offensive tattoos to board our flights. This includes clothing that is excessively revealing, offensive language or imagery, and tattoos that may be considered offensive or inappropriate.

We believe that all passengers deserve to feel comfortable and safe while flying with us, and this policy is in place to ensure that everyone’s experience is enjoyable and respectful.

Please be mindful of your attire and tattoos when flying with Spirit Airlines, and thank you for your cooperation in helping us create a positive and welcoming flying experience for all.

Cathay Pacific’s carried passengers jumps 30% YoY in 2024

Cathay Pacific, one of the leading airlines in Asia, has reported a significant increase in the number of passengers carried in 2024. According to the latest data, the airline saw a 30% year-on-year jump in the number of passengers flying with them.

This impressive growth can be attributed to several factors, including the easing of travel restrictions, increased demand for air travel, and the airline’s commitment to providing exceptional service to its passengers. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, Cathay Pacific has managed to attract more passengers and maintain its position as a preferred choice for travelers.

The airline’s strong performance in 2024 is a testament to its resilience and ability to adapt to changing market conditions. With a focus on safety, comfort, and customer satisfaction, Cathay Pacific continues to be a top choice for travelers looking for a reliable and convenient flying experience.

As travel restrictions continue to ease and demand for air travel rebounds, Cathay Pacific is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing opportunities in the aviation industry. London Heathrow airport has welcomed a Home Office U-turn on transit passengers needing online ETA permits simply to change planes.

Since earlier this month, all non-Europeans intending to travel to Britain without a visa have needed to apply in advance online and pay £10 for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA).

Unlike almost all hub airports worldwide, the permit was deemed necessary even for passengers who were changing planes at Heathrow with no intention of going through passport control.

Airport and airline bosses predicted the demand would send thousands of passengers each day to rivals in continental Europe, where no such rules exist for connecting travellers. Heathrow warned it could lose 4 million passengers each year.

Labour had continued with the policy of Rishi Sunak’s government, with ministers claiming airside transit without an ETA would increase the risk of illegal migration.

But the Home Office has now caved to pressure from Heathrow and airlines.

In a statement, it said: “Following feedback from the aviation industry, the government has agreed a temporary exemption for passengers who transit airside, and therefore do not pass through UK border control.”

While the Home Office insists “the exemption will be kept under review,” few in the aviation industry believe that the demand for an online permit for connecting travellers will ever be brought back.

Heathrow’s chief executive, Thomas Woldbye, said: “The removal of airside transit passengers from the ETA scheme is the right decision and we welcome it.

“This is a critical move to ensure Heathrow and the aviation industry as a whole can continue to deliver for everyone who depends on our world-leading connectivity.

“It shows that the government is listening to industry concerns and is willing to make the necessary changes to strengthen the UK’s competitiveness and drive economic growth.”

Heathrow handles the vast majority of passengers changing planes in the UK. Manchester airport also has a transit facility, but with far fewer users.

The Home Office also announced a potential increase in the price of an ETA from £10 to £16. It is not known when a rise might take effect.

Starting on 2 April 2025, all arrivals in the UK apart from British and Irish citizens, holders of UK visas and those remaining in “airside” transit will need an ETA.

It has been confirmed that the government has made the decision to reverse the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) rule for transit passengers at Heathrow Airport. This rule, which was initially set to come into effect on January 1st, required all passengers transiting through the airport to obtain an ETA before their arrival.

The decision to reverse this rule comes after widespread backlash and concerns raised by both airlines and passengers about the potential impact on travel plans and the overall passenger experience. Many feared that the additional step of obtaining an ETA would cause delays and confusion for those in transit.

With this reversal, transit passengers at Heathrow Airport will not be required to obtain an ETA before their arrival. This news has been welcomed by many travelers and industry stakeholders, who are relieved that the process will now remain as seamless as before.

Overall, this decision demonstrates the government’s willingness to listen to feedback and make adjustments to policies that may have unintended consequences. It is a positive development for those traveling through Heathrow Airport and will hopefully lead to a smoother and more efficient transit experience for all passengers.

  • Passengers Threatened And Harassed In Driverless Taxis Feel ‘Powerless’ To Protect Themselves

Passengers Threatened And Harassed In Driverless Taxis Feel ‘Powerless’ To Protect Themselves

Driverless taxi services are a mouth-watering prospect for any business. There’s a 24/7 torrent of revenue without the need to pay wages for drives. The lack of a potential threat behind the wheel is also a welcome aspect. Unfortunately there’s a flip side to autonomous vehicles; the absence of a driver has emboldened harassment and threats towards passengers traveling alone in Waymo’s vehicles.

Waymo is going to painstaking lengths to ensure that its autonomous vehicles can navigate streets and highways without violating the law. While there’s nothing wrong with the development direction, the road is an unpredictable place and humans often break the law to get themselves out of dangerous situations. For example, you might briefly drive into the oncoming lane on a two-lane road to get around a stopped car or pedestrian. A driverless car would likely wait until the obstacle moves.

The Washington Post interviewed four Waymo passengers, three women, about the dangerous situations that the driverless taxis put them in. One woman recounted how a man was able to disable the Waymo vehicle by stepping in front of it:

In September, Amina V. was on her way to a hair appointment when a man stepped in front of her robotaxi and the car stalled in the middle of the street. She already had been recording herself in the Waymo, so she turned the camera to capture the man hitting on her while her car stood frozen in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood.

She later posted the video on Instagram and X, where Waymo acknowledged the incident.

Amina said in an interview this month that she felt “annoyed” and “powerless” because the car wouldn’t move while pedestrians — first one, then two — were blocking the robotaxi’s path. She called Waymo’s support line, and the operator said they had seen the situation through their cameras.

Jalopnik reached out to Waymo over these recent incidents. A company spokesperson emphasized what courses of action passengers could take through its app in similar situations:

We take these events very seriously and understand how upsetting they can be.

If a rider feels their personal security is threatened while riding, they can reach out to 911 via the Waymo One App, which will also send an urgent notification to Rider Support. Additionally, riders can speak with Rider Support at any time using the in-car screen button, and request 911 be called. Waymo has a close working relationship with emergency responders where we operate, and our team has trained more than 15,000 first responders around the U.S.

Riders can also change their destination or add stops at any time in the app, which would alter the Driver’s course. A ‘pull over’ option is also available to riders at any point during their trip.

Nearly all the tools at the passengers’ disposal are indirect. They can easily feel helpless. Waymo can’t give command control to passengers to possibly direct their vehicle, because they could give an order to do something illegal. Also, emergency dispatchers can’t send police to a moving vehicle. With Tesla aiming to launch its own service and Waymo testing for expansion into cold-weather markets, this could be a nationwide problem soon.

With the rise of driverless taxis becoming more common, reports of passengers being threatened and harassed while using these services have been on the rise. Many passengers have reported feeling “powerless” to protect themselves in these situations, as there is no human driver present to intervene.

Numerous incidents have been reported of passengers being verbally abused, sexually harassed, and even physically assaulted while riding in driverless taxis. Without a human driver present, passengers are left to fend for themselves and often have no way of contacting emergency services in these situations.

This lack of accountability and oversight in driverless taxis has left many passengers feeling vulnerable and unsafe. The companies behind these services must take responsibility for ensuring the safety and well-being of their passengers, whether that means implementing better security measures or providing a way for passengers to easily contact emergency services.

In a world where technology is advancing rapidly, it is crucial that the safety and security of passengers remain a top priority. Passengers should not have to feel “powerless” when using driverless taxis, and it is up to companies to address these issues and provide a safe and secure experience for all passengers.

  • Dallas Love Field moving rideshare area closer after passengers’ backlash

Dallas Love Field moving rideshare area closer after passengers’ backlash

Dallas Love Field travelers won’t have to journey as far to catch an Uber or Lyft at the airport starting Friday.

Airport officials say they’re moving the rideshare pickup area closer to the terminal, which is expected to cut the walk from baggage claim roughly in half. The move, first announced in the fall, comes after the airport received backlash from travelers when rideshare pickup was relocated from the curb outside of baggage claim to one of the parking garages in September 2023, forcing passengers to walk about 10 minutes to meet their drivers.

Rideshare pick-ups will now be next to the valet pavilion on the terminal’s southeast side. Taxis, limos and other on-demand pickups will be nearby in Level 1 of Garage C. Passengers with disabilities will still be able to be picked up curbside at the terminal’s lower level.

A little more than a year ago, officials at the city-owned airport announced plans to move rideshare and other pick-ups further from the terminal to decrease curbside congestion. But plans to revise that move were announced in October after Love Field passenger complaints and officials admitting to using old metrics to estimate the amount of space and demand needed for the pickups.

“During this time, feedback has continuously indicated extreme dissatisfaction despite valiant customer service efforts and way-finding resources implemented by (Dallas’ Department of Aviation),” assistant city manager Dev Rastogi told the Dallas City Council in an Oct. 4 memo. She said the relocation to Garage B was based on demand capacity analysis done before the 2020 pandemic.

Airport officials say the new pickup spot has retrofitted curbs, new road striping, more signs and other improvements hoped to improve people’s experience.

Dallas Love Field Airport has announced that it will be moving its rideshare pickup area closer to the terminal following backlash from passengers.

The current rideshare pickup location, which is located at the far end of the airport parking garage, has been a source of frustration for travelers who have to walk long distances with their luggage to reach their ride.

Starting next month, the rideshare pickup area will be relocated to a more convenient spot closer to the terminal. This move is in response to feedback from passengers who have voiced their concerns about the current setup.

Airport officials have stated that the new location will offer easier access for passengers and will help improve the overall customer experience at Love Field.

Passengers can expect to see signage and directions to the new rideshare pickup area in the coming weeks. The airport is also working on implementing other improvements to make the rideshare experience more efficient and user-friendly.

Overall, this change is a positive step towards addressing passenger concerns and making Dallas Love Field a more passenger-friendly airport.

UK weather latest: Passengers told to brace for rail disruption as UK weather warnings take hold

‘The big enemy is the wind’ – London New Year’s Eve fireworks bosspublished at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time

Darryl Fleming close up cuts off below the shoulders. He's wearing a red hi-vis vest as he stands next to the river on the embankment. A small boat is visible behind him to the right, a red and white brick bridge is also partially visible in the background

Let’s hear from Darryl Fleming, the man in charge of London’s New Year’s
    Eve fireworks display.

Tens of thousands of people are due to attend the event, which will see
dazzling pyrotechnics fired from barges on the Thames, and millions more will
    tune in on TV.

While displays in Edinburgh and Blackpool have been cancelled, Darryl is
    confident London will go ahead.

“The big enemy is the wind, so we have to plan for that in the design
stage,” he says. “We don’t have massive big shells that have a high chance of being
    taken out of a show.

“By having that in the planning stage, in the design process, then it
minimises the amount of containment we have to do.”

Darryl’s team have been monitoring the weather for the past seven days.

“The wind direction is in the right direction, and if we need to
curtail parts of the show, we can do that, we have all those plans in place,”
    he says.

“From a broadcast point of view nobody is really going to see the
difference and everybody will still enjoy the show, but we know we will be delivering it as safely as possible.”

The UK is set to experience disruption in rail services as severe weather warnings take hold across the country. Passengers are being advised to brace for delays and cancellations as the adverse weather conditions are expected to impact travel.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for rain and wind in various parts of the UK, with strong gusts and heavy downpours forecasted. This is likely to cause problems on the rail network, with potential flooding, fallen trees, and debris on the tracks.

Train operators have urged passengers to check their journey before setting off and to allow extra time for travel. Delays and cancellations are expected, so it is important for commuters to stay informed and plan accordingly.

It is recommended for passengers to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and travel advice to minimize any inconvenience caused by the disruption. Stay safe and be prepared for any challenges that may arise during your journey.

Norwegian Cruise ship ‘man overboard’ sparks frantic search as horrified passengers watch chaos unfold

A search for a Norwegian Cruise Line passenger who went overboard while en route to the Bahamas has been abandoned.

The 51-year-old man fell overboard at approximately 3pm on Thursday as the Norwegian Epic was sailing northbound from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, toward Great Stirrup Cay.

‘The authorities were immediately notified, and a search and rescue operation under the guidance and oversight of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center went underway,’ a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told DailyMail.com.

The search was ultimately deemed unsuccessful, after which the ship was ‘released by the authorities to continue its voyage’.

The man who went overboard was traveling with a large group, including his family.

His family members are being ‘attended to and supported during this very challenging situation,’ the spokesperson added.

The ship departed Port Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday and is currently on a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage.

The vessel is now being diverted to Nassau.

Passengers on board posted videos to social media filming the water in the immediate aftermath where they shared the little information they had.

The boat was seen circling the area where flares were shot to mark the position of the ship when a man overboard was first reported

One passenger onboard the ship told DailyMail.com the captain had advised guests that the individual was not found before letting them know the boat was being diverted.

In one video, a passenger could be heard incorrectly saying the missing individual was a child.

Another passenger who shared a video of the ship circling around as it conducted a search said ‘a guy jumped off the boat’.

The Holland America Line happened to be nearby and steamed toward the location to try to help in the rescue. Crew members reportedly shot a flare in the water to mark the ship’s position when the ‘man overboard’ was reported.

The identity of the person who went overboard hasn’t been revealed.

Cruise Hive reported that onboard announcements told passengers that the individual who went overboard was wearing a blue shirt at the time of their fall.

The outlet added that Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam was the ship seen racing toward the Norwegian ship in one of the videos.

The Zuiderdam’s home port is Port Everglades and is in the midst of a 7-night Caribbean itinerary as well, with Thursday being a day at sea.

Sunset in the Bahamas Thursday was at 5:18pm, which would have left rescuers only a few hours of sunlight to get to the victim.

In the first video, which was posted to X at 3:35pm, a woman behind the camera showed the ship circling around a red patch of water said to be the deployed flare.

‘They put a flare, they’re circulating. We did an entire circle looking for the guy that jumped off the boat. He jumped, he fell and bounced off of one of these [lifeboats] and fell in the water,’ she said.

In the other video, posted to TikTok around 5pm, the woman filming zoomed in to show what presumably was the Zuiderdam rushing to the Norwegian ship.

She panned up to a woman standing on a higher balcony who she said was screaming about the person who went overboard. She added that the woman didn’t want to answer more questions.

‘Some people have binoculars and are trying to look out in the water,’ she said. ‘Poor baby. I hope there’s a miracle. I hope there’s a miracle and they’re able to find him.’

This latest tragedy comes just days after another person fell off a Caribbean cruise.

DailyMail.com reported that Elizabeth McElmurray, 48, died on the Sky Princess on December 21 as it returned to Florida from the Caribbean.

While the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, Princess Cruises says she fell while trying to ‘jump’ into the water, inadvertently landing on one of the cruise ship decks 10 stories below.

On December 15, McElmurray shared a photograph of herself smiling alongside her mother as they boarded the ship in Fort Lauderdale.

They were setting sail to scatter the ashes of her mother’s husband on his favorite beach in Jamaica.

‘I never expected to lose my daughter. I want to also publicly thank the crew for their kindness and compassion during this ordeal,’ her devastated mother, Ellen Downie Mathews, said in an online tribute.

McElmurray’s younger brother paid tribute in another post.

‘She was an amazing woman that loved her family,’ he said.

‘Her nurturing nature for animals was a wonderful quality we shared together I want to thank everyone who tried to help her and everyone’s kind words.

‘This is a loss that is so very heavy. Remember to tell your family and friends you love them, make them smile and laugh even when life is hard. Find beauty when ever you can and strength will follow.’

McElmurray was a manager at retailer Circle K, according to social media profiles. She was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, and lived in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Passengers on board told DailyMail.com the captain gave the devastating announcement that McElmurray had died over the speakers on Saturday.

They told DailyMail.com she had tried to jump into the water from one of the top decks, but hit a lifeboat deck around 10 floors below instead. Police were seen combing the cruise ship later that day.

The ship had been making its way back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida from an eight-day voyage to Cozumel, Mexico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and the cruise line’s private Bahamian resort, Princess Cays, at the time.

On Tuesday evening, a Norwegian Cruise ship sailing in the Caribbean was rocked by a terrifying incident when a passenger went overboard, sparking a frantic search operation as horrified passengers watched the chaos unfold.

The cruise ship, which was en route to its next destination, immediately launched rescue boats and called for assistance from nearby vessels in the area. Passengers onboard were in a state of shock and disbelief as they witnessed the dramatic scene play out before their eyes.

As the search continued into the night, tensions ran high among passengers and crew members, with many fearing the worst for the missing individual. The cruise ship’s captain reassured everyone that every effort was being made to locate the passenger and bring them to safety.

In the midst of the chaos, the cruise ship’s crew worked tirelessly to coordinate the search efforts and provide support to passengers who were understandably shaken by the traumatic experience. Despite the challenging circumstances, the crew remained dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone onboard.

As the search operation continued, hope began to fade as hours passed without any sign of the missing passenger. The heartbreaking situation served as a stark reminder of the dangers of traveling at sea, and left a somber mood hanging over the once lively cruise ship.

Ultimately, the search efforts were unsuccessful in locating the missing individual, leaving passengers and crew members devastated by the tragic turn of events. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures while at sea.

As the Norwegian Cruise ship continued on its journey, the memory of the man overboard incident lingered in the minds of all onboard, serving as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable and sometimes perilous nature of life at sea.

Airline praises pilots in crash-landing where both died but nearly half the passengers survived

    • An Azerbaijan Airlines flight crashed in Kazakhstan, killing 38, including both pilots.

    • Remarkably, nearly half the passengers — 29 people — survived.

    • The airline’s president praised the “heroism” of the pilots and crew while speaking to reporters.

The president of Azerbaijan Airlines praised the pilots of flight J2-8243 after the plane, carrying 67 people, crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

Although both pilots were among the 38 fatalities reported by Kazakh authorities, nearly half the passengers— 29 people —survived.

Samir Rzayev, who heads up the airline, also known as AZAL, told reporters on Wednesday that the two pilot’s “heroism will never be forgotten.”

“While this tragic accident brought a significant loss to our nation, the crew’s valiant dedication to their duties until the last moment and their prioritization of human life have immortalized their names in history,” Rzayev said, according to the Azerbaijani news agency Report.

Rzayev said the pilots collectively had over 15,000 flight hours and that the plane had recently passed a technical inspection.

“Despite these measures, the causes of the incident are still under investigation,” Rzayev added.

The Associated Press posted a video of the crash showing some passengers being pulled from the aft section of the aircraft, an area which is traditionally safer in a crash.

Per a 2015 analysis by Time Magazine of US federal data from 1985 to 2000, the seats in the back of the plane had a fatality rate of 32%, compared to 39% in the middle and 38% in the front. The back middle seats had the lowest fatality rate, at 28%.

Still, the circumstances of the crash play a bigger role, like how a jet lands and the actions of its pilots.

The Embraer 190 jet had departed from Baku, Azerbaijan, early Wednesday, bound for Grozny, Russia.

Adverse weather conditions led to a diversion, the airline told BBC News. The flight-tracking website Flightradar24 shows that the plane made a crash-landing at about 06:28 local time near Aktau, Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan’s Senate Chairman Ashimbayev Maulen told Reuters on Thursday that the cause of the crash remains unknown.

Preliminary information from Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, suggested that the plane diverted after a bird strike caused an onboard emergency, according to AP.

And Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov cautioned against speculating on the cause of the crash before the completion of an investigation, per the Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti.

However, Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, put the blame on Russia. On Wednesday evening, he claimed in an X post that the commercial airline was “shot down by a Russian air defense system.”

In the post, he said there is video footage from inside the plane, showing “punctured life vests and other damage.”

Others have also suggested Russian involvement.

Osprey Flight Solutions, an aviation security firm, told The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that the plane may have been damaged by a Russian anti-missile system. The firm cited footage of the crash, the apparent damage to the aircraft, and recent military activity in the area.

“Incidents of civilian airliners being misidentified and shot down by air-defence systems are not unprecedented in the region,” a critical alert issued by Osprey and provided to Business Insider said.

Oliver Alexander, an OSINT analyst, said in a message to BI that “at this point, I don’t think there is enough available evidence to conclusively say what exactly happened (type of missile etc).”

But he added that “all the evidence I have seen points to the aircraft being hit by shrapnel from an air defense missile which severely damaged the elevator and rudder controls.”

Ukrainian drones have targeted Grozny in recent weeks, and the governor of the Russian region of North Ossetia said in a Telegram post on Wednesday that there were Ukrainian drone attacks carried out in a number of regions of the North Caucasus Federal District that day.

The district includes Grozny and the surrounding area.

The post specifically mentioned a drone being taken down in Vladikavkas, about 70 miles west of Grozny.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in a statement: “There are videos of the plane crash available in the media and on social networks, and everyone can watch them. However, the reasons for the crash are not yet known to us.”

This wouldn’t be the first time Russia was blamed for the shooting down of a passenger aircraft.

In 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was hit by a Russian-made surface-to-air missile over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people onboard. Investigators said the missile system used originated in Russia and was launched from a part of Ukraine controlled by Russian-backed forces.

Russia has denied involvement in the MH17 crash.

Azerbaijan Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Rzayev, the airline’s president, told reporters that the plane’s black box had been recovered and that “its analysis is being conducted in line with international aviation standards.”

Embraer, which built the aircraft that crashed Wednesday, said in a statement that it was “deeply saddened” by the crash and was working closely with relevant authorities to support the investigation.
