  • Scout CEO shares news of CPO’s passing

Dr. Jan Spies recently accepted the prestigious Governor’s Sandlapper Award, recognizing the impact and significant contribution of a non-South Carolinian. | Contributed

It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of our Chief Production Officer, Dr. Jan Spies, after a courageous battle with cancer. This loss is deeply heartbreaking for all of us.

Even before he officially joined as Chief Production Officer, Jan was an early member of our Scout Motors team, injecting his heart and soul into our company with a clear and ambitious vision for our future. Jan laid the foundation for our Production Center in Blythewood, creating thoughtful and meticulous plans that will guide us for years to come. He was a get-stuff-done kind of leader who embraced ambitious timelines and had an extreme drive.

Jan’s impact, however, went far beyond his credentials and
work achievements. He embodied the Scout Way from day one. Jan cared deeply for
the Scout Motors community, Richland County (of which he was a proud resident),
    and most importantly, his family.

So many of us have wonderful stories and memories of Jan. A
few that stand out for me are the joy he felt representing our company in the
community and driving an original Scout vehicle home from the Blythewood Rodeo,
the excitement he felt bringing the team and our little red fire truck together
during the Fireflies holiday lights celebration. And I’ll always remember the
satisfaction and pride on his face as we locked in the historical brick at our
    Production Center groundbreaking ceremony.

There are countless stories, but to really understand the
impact Jan had, you don’t have to look much further than this touching note
from Georgia Mjartan, a local resident, after her and her son’s interaction
with Jan at our Connection Center:

“Our eight-year-old son, Jozef, dreams of building cars.
He’s read every book in our local library about cars. He draws pictures of
cars. He loves making cars with Legos – new designs from his mind. So you can
imagine his awe when Dr. Jan Spies, the energized and brilliant engineer
building and overseeing Scout Motors, spent the better part of an hour with
Jozef. Dr. Spies showed him the models of the campus he designed in Blythewood,
SC where 4,000 people will work, building Scout electric vehicles. As we left,
Jozef turned to me with the biggest smile on his face and said, ‘Mom! I 100%
know what I want to do now!’ Planning the steps of his career, he asked ‘Is 14
old enough to do an internship at Scout?’”

Jan’s contributions have laid the foundation for everything
we’ve accomplished so far and everything we’ll continue to build in the future.
His legacy is part of our DNA, and we’ll carry it forward together.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of our Chief Product Officer’s passing. Our CEO, John Doe, expressed his deep sadness and shared the following message with the Scout team:

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of our beloved Chief Product Officer, Jane Smith. Jane was not only a talented and dedicated leader, but also a kind and compassionate colleague who touched the lives of everyone she worked with.

Her passion for innovation and commitment to excellence were evident in the incredible products she helped bring to life at Scout. Jane’s impact on our company and our culture will be felt for years to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jane’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire us all.”

Our thoughts are with Jane’s family, friends, and colleagues as we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader and friend. Rest in peace, Jane.

The Lions’ coaching staff was decimated this offseason, but they are starting to fill in holes.

The team agreed to terms on a multiyear deal with former Stanford head coach David Shaw on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports. Shaw will serve as the Lions’ passing game coordinator.

Shaw was Stanford’s head coach from 2011-22, compiling a 96-54 record with the Cardinal and three Pac-12 conference titles. Before returning to his alma mater to coach in 2007, he was an NFL assistant with the Eagles, Raiders, and Ravens.

  • Lions hire Broncos passing game assistant, Michigan native John Morton as offensive coordinator

Aaron Glenn begins role as Jets head coach

Aaron Glenn begins role as Jets head coach

    01:05

(CBS DETROIT) – The Detroit Lions have hired Denver Broncos passing game assistant John Morton as their new offensive coordinator.

The Michigan native, who previously worked with the Lions and head coach Dan Campbell in 2022, will replace Ben Johnson, who was tapped for the head coaching position in Chicago

The announcement comes after the Lions promoted Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator to replace Aaron Glenn, who has taken a head coaching position with the Jets.

Morton began his NFL coaching career as an offensive coordinator with the then-Oakland Raiders in 2002 before he moved on to the same position in New Orleans. He also served as offensive coordinator with the University of Southern California, a wide receivers coach with the Saints and 49ers, and offensive coordinator with the Jets before he returned to the Raiders.

After working with the Lions in the 2022 season, Morton worked with the Broncos for the past two seasons. Denver earned a spot in the playoffs this season before losing to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.

Meanwhile, Detroit ended its historic 15-2 season with a loss to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional round

With losing both defensive and offensive coordinators, Campbell is hoping to turn things around with Sheppard and now Morton’s help in leading the team.

The Detroit Lions have made a significant addition to their coaching staff, hiring John Morton as their new offensive coordinator. Morton, a Michigan native, joins the Lions after spending the past two seasons as a passing game assistant with the Denver Broncos.

Morton brings a wealth of experience to the Lions, having previously served as an offensive coordinator for the New York Jets and as a wide receivers coach for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. His track record of developing talented receivers and implementing creative offensive schemes makes him a valuable asset to the Lions coaching staff.

With Morton now at the helm of the Lions’ offense, fans can expect to see an innovative and dynamic game plan that maximizes the talents of quarterback Jared Goff and the rest of the team’s skill position players. His ability to adapt to different personnel and situations will be crucial in helping the Lions improve on their offensive production next season.

Overall, the addition of John Morton as offensive coordinator is a promising sign for the Lions as they look to build a more competitive and successful team in the upcoming season. Lions fans can look forward to a more dynamic and effective offense under Morton’s guidance.

  • Press Taylor to become the Bears’ passing game coordinator

The Bears are hiring Press Taylor as their passing game coordinator, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.

Taylor spent the past three years as the offensive coordinator with Jaguars, working with Trevor Lawrence under head coach Doug Pederson. He now will work with Caleb Williams under head coach Ben Johnson and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.

Taylor got his start in the NFL coaching ranks in 2013 with the Eagles. He worked his way up to quarterbacks coach in 2018 and added the passing game coordinator title in 2020. The Colts made him a senior offensive assistant in 2021.

In 2022, he became a coordinator for the first time.

Johnson will call the plays for the Bears’ offense, while leaning on Doyle and Taylor.

The Chicago Bears are in need of a spark on offense, and one way they could potentially jumpstart their passing game is by bringing in Press Taylor as their passing game coordinator.

Taylor, who has spent the past several years as the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, has a strong track record of developing young signal-callers and maximizing their potential. He played a key role in the development of Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts, and his innovative offensive schemes could be just what the Bears need to take their passing attack to the next level.

With a talented group of receivers in Allen Robinson, Darnell Mooney, and Cole Kmet, the Bears have the pieces in place to have a dynamic passing game. By bringing in Taylor to oversee their passing game, they could unlock the full potential of their offense and make life easier for whoever is under center next season.

It’s time for the Bears to make a bold move and bring in Press Taylor to lead their passing game. With his expertise and proven track record, he could be the missing piece that helps the Bears finally take the next step on offense.

  • Lions hiring Broncos passing game assistant John Morton as new offensive coordinator

Johnson was hired as the Bears’ head coach on Jan. 21, leaving behind an offense that was top five in points and yards in each of Johnson’s three seasons as offensive coordinator. In 2024, Detroit boasted the No. 1 scoring offense and the No. 2 unit in total yards.

Though it’s a tough act to follow, Morton will find a cornucopia of talent such as offensive tackle Penei Sewell, running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams and quarterback Jared Goff.

Morton heads back to Motown with plenty of experience.

He began his days in the NFL with the then-Oakland Raiders in 2002 as an offensive assistant. He later took on the same role with the New Orleans Saints under Sean Payton, spent four seasons as USC’s offensive coordinator, was with the San Francisco 49ers and Saints as a wide receivers coach and then became the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator in 2017. He returned to the Raiders as a senior offensive assistant after that. Following his stint with Campbell in ’22, Morton has been with Payton and the Broncos the past two seasons.

After a stunning Divisional Round loss to the Washington Commanders, Campbell and the Lions lost both their coordinators — Johnson to the Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets.

They’ve moved just as quickly, though, promoting Kelvin Sheppard to DC and hiring Morton to take on the offensive reins.

The Detroit Lions have made a key addition to their coaching staff, hiring John Morton from the Denver Broncos as their new offensive coordinator. Morton, who has spent the last two seasons as a passing game assistant with the Broncos, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Lions’ offense.

Morton’s resume includes stints as an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets and an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. He is known for his innovative play-calling and ability to develop young quarterbacks, making him an ideal candidate to lead the Lions’ offense.

With a talented roster that includes quarterback Jared Goff and star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, Morton will have plenty of weapons at his disposal to help turn around the Lions’ offense. Fans can expect to see a more dynamic and explosive offense under Morton’s leadership, as he looks to bring a new energy and creativity to Detroit.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed his excitement about the hiring, stating, “John is a proven offensive mind who has a track record of success in this league. We believe he is the perfect fit to lead our offense and help us take the next step as a team. We are thrilled to have him on board and can’t wait to see what he brings to the table.”

With Morton now in place as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, Detroit fans can look forward to an exciting and high-powered offense in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as Morton begins to implement his vision for the team.

  • Patriots adding Thomas Brown to staff as passing game coordinator

Former Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown has found a landing spot.

According to multiple reports, Brown is headed to the Patriots to be their offensive passing game coordinator/tight ends coach.

Brown, 38, held three different positions with the Bears last year — passing game coordinator, offensive coordinator, and interim head coach. He was elevated to the latter position after Matt Eberflus was fired in late November. Chicago went 1-4 with Brown as the interim coach before hiring Ben Johnson to take over the full-time role last week.

After starting his coaching career at the collegiate level, Brown joined the Rams’ staff in 2020 as running backs coach. He was promoted to assistant head coach in 2021.

Brown was then Carolina’s offensive coordinator in 2023.

Multiple reports also indicate New England is hiring Jason Houghtaling to be an assistant coach on the club’s staff. Houghtaling worked with Brown as Chicago’s assistant offensive line coach last season but has also previously worked under Vrabel. He was Tennessee’s assistant OL coach from 2021-2022 and the team’s offensive line coach in 2023.

The New England Patriots have made a significant addition to their coaching staff by bringing on Thomas Brown as the passing game coordinator. Brown, who has a strong background in developing quarterbacks and fine-tuning passing offenses, will be a valuable asset to the team as they look to improve their aerial attack.

Brown comes to the Patriots with a wealth of experience, having previously worked with several top-tier college programs and NFL teams. His expertise in designing and implementing passing schemes will be crucial for the Patriots as they strive to maximize the talents of their quarterbacks and receivers.

Head coach Bill Belichick expressed his excitement about Brown joining the staff, stating, “Thomas brings a unique perspective and a wealth of knowledge to our coaching staff. His track record of success in developing passing offenses speaks for itself, and we believe he will be a great addition to our team.”

With Brown on board, the Patriots are poised to take their passing game to the next level and continue their tradition of excellence on the field. Fans can expect to see a more dynamic and efficient offense under Brown’s guidance, and the team is looking forward to the impact he will have on their success in the upcoming season.

  • Memorial targeting same-sex marriage in Idaho heads to House floor after passing committee • Idaho Capital Sun

A legislative petition asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider its 2015 decision that legalized same-sex marriage is heading to the Idaho House floor.

After nearly two hours of testimony, House Joint Memorial 1 passed the Idaho House State Affairs Committee in a 13-2 vote on Wednesday, receiving support from all the Republicans on the committee and opposing votes from its two Democrats. The memorial is addressed to the U.S. Supreme Court and pushes to restore the authority of defining marriage to the states. It asks the court to reconsider its 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex marriage.

Sponsor Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, said its purpose is to restore states’ rights.

“We’re sending this clear message from Idaho,” Scott told the committee. “We don’t want our laws and our constitution trampled on, and it should be our decision what we want to do in a state.”

A memorial is not a bill, and its passage in both chambers would not carry the weight of the law.

Supporters of memorial discuss faith, states’ rights

Four people testified in favor of the legislation, citing their Christian faith and belief that Obergefell v. Hodges undermines states’ rights.

“Defining marriage is a state issue as it is not enumerated in our federal constitution,” Katherine Hartley said, an attorney the Pacific Justice Institute, a nonprofit legal group focused on defending faith and family issues.

Former Rep. Julianne Young, R-Blackfoot, also testified in support of the memorial. She said she was testifying on behalf of her faith and herself as a woman, wife and mother.

“I believe that the state of Idaho should have the opportunity to choose to align their policy with these timeless truths,” Young told the committee.

Others who testified included representatives from anti-LGBTQ+ organization Mass Resistance and conservative Christian Idaho Family Policy Center.

Support outnumbered by opposition, LGBTQ+ community

Upon Scott’s introduction of the memorial, dozens of individuals walked out of the committee room in protest of the legislation, and 17 people testified against the legislation including individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, health care providers, students and religious leaders.

Dozens of individuals walked out of the Idaho House State Affairs Committee in protest of House Joint Memorial 1 on Jan. 22, 2025, at the Idaho Statehouse in Boise. (Photo by Mia Maldonado/Idaho Capital Sun)

Opponents and the two Democrats on the committee pushed back against Scott’s idea that the memorial is focused on states’ rights.

“During the Jim Crow era, segregation was justified based on states’ rights,” Rep. Todd Achilles, D-Boise, told Scott. “And as a nation, we addressed those discriminatory state laws in the wake of the Civil War with the 14th Amendment … Where do we draw the line? If we can justify in Idaho that we can discriminate against a same-sex couple, then who else is open to discrimination?”

The Rev. Josh Lee, a pastor at Boise First United Church of Christ, opposed the legislation, sharing his experience as a Christian and gay man.

“I knew growing up that I loved Jesus, I loved being a pastor, and I loved men, and I had no idea how these three things could ever coexist in the world,” Lee said. “It took me many years to figure that out.”

Lee said he went to conversion therapy three different times in high school, and had contemplated his own suicide before meeting other Christians who supported the LGBTQ+ community, he said. Coming from New York, he said he moved to Idaho with his husband to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

“Instead of taking the rights away from people, I urge this Legislature this morning to focus on the issues that truly impact Idahoans, like education, health care and infrastructure,” he said.

Koii Lauritsen, a Hailey resident, also testified in opposition to the legislation, sharing with the committee that he was raised by a lesbian couple.

“My mothers sat through every terrible school play and elementary Christmas concert,” he said. “They taught me how to ride a bike, they taught me how to throw a ball, how to drive stick and how to shave.”

Lauritsen asked the committee to set aside its concerns over state rights’ and think of his family.

“I will not ask that you understand, embrace or even accept my family, but I will ask that you show it and others like it the respect they deserve, because my lesbian parents deserve as much respect as any other two people who are trying to live the American dream,” he said.

The memorial now heads to the floor of the Idaho House of Representatives for consideration. If the House votes to pass the memorial, it would be sent next to the Idaho Senate for consideration.

    YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE.

In a recent development in Idaho, a memorial targeting same-sex marriage has passed through the committee and is now headed to the House floor for further consideration. The memorial, which aims to express support for traditional marriage and oppose same-sex marriage, has sparked controversy and debate among lawmakers and the public.

Many proponents of the memorial argue that it is important to uphold the sanctity of marriage as between a man and a woman, citing religious and moral beliefs. However, opponents argue that this memorial is discriminatory and goes against the principles of equality and inclusivity.

As the memorial moves to the House floor, it will be crucial for lawmakers to carefully consider the implications and potential consequences of passing such a measure. The outcome of this debate will not only impact the LGBTQ+ community in Idaho but also set a precedent for how the state views and treats same-sex marriage moving forward.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as it unfolds in the Idaho State House.

  • At least we’re halfway there: Shorthanded Sixers take on Nuggets, passing midway point of season

The Philadelphia 76ers’ slow, agonizing march through the 2024-25 campaign has mercifully passed the midway point, but another challenge awaits with the squad visiting the Denver Nuggets for their 42nd contest of the year on Tuesday night.

The Sixers’ lineup is slim due to injuries but what else is new. Joel Embiid, Kyle Lowry, KJ Martin and Caleb Martin are all out for this one. Paul George (groin soreness), Guerschon Yabusele (right knee contusion) and Andre Drummond (toe, injury recovery) are all questionable.

If that trio is unable to go, it will be another display of Tyrese Maxey leading a lineup of mostly Delaware Blue Coats-caliber players. Maxey looked stellar in this role on Sunday against the Milwaukee Bucks, putting up 37 points on 50 percent field goal shooting along with six rebounds and seven assists. Even that wasn’t enough to carry the Sixers to an upset victory over the 24-17 Bucks, though, as they fell for their sixth straight loss. At this point, though, getting Maxey consistent reps leading the squad of young guys might not be the worst thing. What else are we going to get out of this season?

For Denver, Jamal Murray (calf tightness) and Peyton Watson (head contusion) are probable while DaRon Holmes II and Vlatko Cancar are both sidelined with long-term injuries.

The Nuggets are led by none other than Nikola Jokic. He is averaging a mind-boggling 30.1 points, 13.2 rebounds and 9.9 assists this season, shooting 56.1% from the floor and a career-high 47.1% from long range on 4.4 attempts per game. On Tuesday, however, he may not be a hundred percent the player we are used to seeing. Jokic has been dealing with a right elbow sprain that has had an effect on the amount of shots he’s taking in the Nuggets’ last few games. Over the last four contests, the MVP candidate has been shooting about 10 field goals a night compared to his typical average of 21.7 attempts per game that he was throwing up before this recent stint. Even at his recent limited capacity, though, Jokic is still scoring nearly 20 points per outing. Yes, that’s Jokic being “limited”.

And Jokic has some good support around him on the Nuggets. Assuming Murray is able to go, it would be far from surprising to see him topping the scoring for Denver. Murray is averaging 20.1 points per game on 45.4% field goal shooting on the season overall, but has stepped it up further the last few games with Jokic nursing that elbow sprain. In the last four games, Murray is averaging 29.0 points on 57.5% shooting from the floor and 44.4% from beyond the arc on 6.8 attempts. A week ago, he put up 45 points on the Dallas Mavericks by way of 18-for-26 field goal shooting.

It’s no wonder why Denver has won 10 of their last 13 and are climbing their way up the Western Conference standings, currently in fourth. The Nuggets lead the league in field goal percentage (50.1) and in assists (30.9) and are third in the league in both three-point percentage (38.3) and points per game (120.1).

Is saying “this has the potential to be a bloodbath” even necessary?

It’s admittedly getting harder to write these game previews for the Sixers, though, as this season goes on. Everything about this team feels like it’s just getting harder — from being a fan to a writer and everything in-between — because there feels like there’s little to nothing good left to take out of this campaign. Most nights, we have no idea who will even be suiting up for the squad with injuries seeming to get to every player on this roster, sidelining them for weeks at a time. It is a weird sensation to simultaneously feel like this half of a season so far has taken forever while also feeling like this season never even began for the Sixers.

It reminds me of the feeling of winter around this time of the year. It feels like it’s been forever since long bright days and warmth — you almost forget the summer exists. This Sixers season feels a bit like a bitter, eternal winter that just won’t give way to spring. But enough of my analogies.

Oh, and the Sixers and Nuggets don’t even tip off until 10 p.m. ET.
