  • Panthers part ways with Nate Carroll as passing game coordinator

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers are parting ways with passing game coordinator Nate Carroll, a league source told The Athletic on Friday.

The son of former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll spent a year on the inaugural staff of Panthers coach Dave Canales, who knew the younger Carroll from their time together in Seattle.

Canales has now moved on from four assistants since the end of the Panthers’ 5-12 season. Outside linebackers coach Tem Lukabu, safeties coach Bert Watts and defensive quality control coach Bobby Maffei were let go last week. Rumblings about Carroll’s future also surfaced recently while his father was drawing interest in head coaching vacancies in Chicago and Las Vegas.

Carroll came to Charlotte after 14 years on his father’s staff in Seattle, where he held a variety of roles, mostly on the offensive side. He was one of several ex-Seahawks assistants who joined Canales when he was hired by Carolina after one year as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator.

Bryce Young enjoyed a late-season resurgence under Canales, who successfully helped turn around the careers of Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith in Tampa and Seattle, respectively. In addition to Canales, the Panthers’ staff features several other assistants with experience coaching QBs: Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik, QB coach Will Harriger and senior assistant Jim Caldwell.

The Carolina Panthers have announced that they are parting ways with Nate Carroll, who has served as the passing game coordinator for the team. This decision comes after a disappointing season for the Panthers, who finished with a record of 5-12 and missed the playoffs.

Carroll joined the Panthers coaching staff in 2018 and was tasked with overseeing the team’s passing game. However, the offense struggled to find consistency throughout the season, ranking near the bottom of the league in passing yards per game.

Head coach Matt Rhule expressed his gratitude for Carroll’s contributions to the team but stated that he felt it was time to make a change in order to improve the team’s performance on offense. The Panthers will begin the search for a new passing game coordinator immediately.

Fans of the Panthers are eager to see what changes will be made to the coaching staff in the offseason and are hopeful that these moves will lead to a more successful season in the future.

  • Washington Huskies WR Giles Jackson’s presence should help passing attack in Sun Bowl

Washington Huskies WR Giles Jackson’s presence should help passing attack in Sun Bowl

As one of the most productive wide receivers in the Big Ten this season and one of the most reliable and consistent contributors on Washington’s offense, Giles Jackson plays a pretty important role for the Washington Huskies as they get prepped to face off against the Louisville Cardinals in the 2024 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

Jackson, a seasoned wide receiver, has proven to be one of Washington’s most reliable pass catchers and he actually leads the team with a grand total of 74 receptions. He’s turned those 74 catches into 732 yards and three touchdowns.

And as the Huskies get set to face the Cardinals, Jackson is preparing to catch passes from a true freshman quarterback. In the final game of the 2024 Washington Husky football season, UW is turning to Demond Williams Jr. to lead the offense as Will Rogers wasn’t producing at a high level down the stretch of the season.

So, even though the bulk of Jackson’s receiving yards came via a connection with the aforementioned Rogers, the senior wide receiver will be hauling in passes from a much younger passer who will be making just his second collegiate start.

Washington Huskies WR Giles Jackson plays pivotal role for UW in Sun Bowl

The versatility, athleticism, reliability, and experience that Jackson brings to the table are all pretty dang important and should help the Huskies develop a passing attack as they face the Cardinals with such a young quarterback.

That’s not meant to take away from what Williams brings to the table. Fisch clearly believes he’s the best option for UW at quarterback (and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Rogers was no longer going to be effective in UW’s offense as it currently operates).

But there’s plenty of reason to believe that having a solid, seasoned receiver ready to catch passes in tight windows of coverage should help whoever it is that’s throwing the ball. Having a good receiver can only serve to make Williams better. And that matters. And it’s why Jackson plays a pretty important role in this offense in this game.

The Washington Huskies are gearing up to face off against the Miami Hurricanes in the Sun Bowl, and one player who could make a big impact on the passing attack is wide receiver Giles Jackson.

Jackson, a transfer from Michigan, has been a dynamic playmaker for the Huskies this season. He has shown the ability to stretch the field with his speed and has been a reliable target for quarterback Dylan Morris.

With Jackson in the lineup, the Huskies passing attack has the potential to be even more explosive in the Sun Bowl. His presence on the field forces defenses to account for his speed, opening up opportunities for other receivers and creating mismatches in the secondary.

In a game that could come down to big plays in the passing game, having a weapon like Giles Jackson could prove to be a difference-maker for the Huskies. Look for him to make a big impact and help lead Washington to victory in the Sun Bowl.

  • Bengals Remember One of Their Greats With Passing Of Bill Bergey

Bengals Remember One of Their Greats With Passing Of Bill Bergey

As Bengals president Mike Brown watched his team practice Thursday, it was as if he could see No. 66 out there the day after Bill Bergey passed.

“He was as fine a linebacker as we ever had here,” Brown said. “I was really saddened to hear of it. It has an impact on me.”

Bergey, 79, voted by the fans as one of the top 50 Bengals of all-time, died of cancer Christmas Day.

A second-round pick of the Bengals in 1969 out Arkansas State, Bergey went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie in the last season of the AFL. When Bergey signed with the upstart World Football League before the 1974 season, the Bengals traded him to the Eagles for a price that showed just how much the pro game thought of him.

    A first-round draft pick in 1977. A first-rounder and second-rounder in 1978.

“It was a good price and he deserved a good price. He played very well and had a number of good years with the Eagles,” Brown said. “He had the size and he could run. He was a bona fide linebacker. Back when middle linebacker was probably considered the most important position on the defense. He could impact the run game and participate in the passing game.”

Bergey went on to become an icon in Philadelphia, where he went to four Pro Bowls and helped lead the Eagles to their first Super Bowl during what turned out to be his last season in 1980. He then became a popular radio announcer for the club, as well as a frequent alumni speaker and member of the Eagles Hall of Fame.

Bergey also left quite a legacy in Cincinnati, as well as some of his fondest memories.

With the first pick in that ’69 draft, the Bengals selected University of Cincinnati quarterback Greg Cook and he went on to become the AFL Rookie of the Year and passing champion despite suffering a career-ending shoulder injury that season.

“Greg was our best player on offense and Bill was our best player on defense,” Brown said.

Cook, who died in 2012, also served as the best man at Bergey’s Arkansas wedding. Bergey is survived by the wife he took that day, Mickey, his three sons, Jake, Jason, and Josh, 10 grandchildren,

“I really enjoyed my five years in Cincinnati. I played (seven) years with the Eagles and I really remember more about my Bengals days,” Bergey told Bengals.com in 2017. “I had just got married. I had my first kid. Had my first paycheck. The team was close. We were young and hungry.”

The Cincinnati Bengals are mourning the loss of one of their beloved former players, Bill Bergey. Bergey, who passed away at the age of 71, was a standout linebacker for the Bengals from 1974 to 1980.

During his time with the Bengals, Bergey was known for his tenacity, leadership, and hard-hitting style of play. He was a key part of the team’s defense and helped lead the Bengals to their first-ever playoff appearance in 1975.

After his playing career, Bergey went on to have a successful coaching career and remained involved in the football community. He will be remembered not only for his on-field accomplishments but also for his passion for the game and his dedication to his teammates.

The Bengals organization and fans are mourning the loss of a true great and are grateful for the impact that Bill Bergey had on the team and the community. Rest in peace, Bill. You will always be remembered as a Bengals legend.

  • ‘It would be dope’ to catch QB Aaron Rodgers’ 500th career passing touchdown

‘It would be dope’ to catch QB Aaron Rodgers’ 500th career passing touchdown

According to NFL Research, Rodgers and Adams have scored 82 touchdowns and are tied with Dan Marino and Mark Clayton for the third-most TD connections by a QB-WR duo in NFL history, including playoffs. Only Manning and Marvin Harrison (114) and Steve Young and Jerry Rice (92) have connected for more touchdowns.

Adams, who was acquired via trade midseason from the Las Vegas Raiders, became the 12th player to reach 100 career TD catches in a Week 15 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Adams recorded nine catches for 198 receiving yards and two scores to snap New York’s four-game losing streak.

From their eight seasons together in Green Bay and now in New York, Adams is appreciative of Rodgers’ career and praised the 41-year-old along the QB’s 20th season.

“We’ve had some special connections in the past, so it’d be great,” Adams said. “And, obviously, it would be a big, big thing for him. Not that he needs more accolades and more milestones, but you might as well keep racking them up while you can.”

The duo will look to rack up some more touchdowns on Sunday and in the regular season-finale against the Miami Dolphins.

I’m not even a Green Bay Packers fan, but it would be dope to catch QB Aaron Rodgers’ 500th career passing touchdown. The man is a legend on the field and watching him reach this incredible milestone would be a moment to remember. Whether you’re a Packers fan or not, you have to appreciate the talent and skill that Rodgers brings to the game. So here’s to hoping that lucky fan who catches that historic touchdown pass knows just how special of a moment they were a part of. Go Pack go! #AaronRodgers #500thTouchdown #NFLLegends

Miami’s Cam Ward sets Division I career passing TD record in Pop-Tarts Bowl

Cam Ward now has the most passing TDs of any quarterback at the top two levels of college football.

Ward’s TD pass to Jacolby George in the first quarter of Saturday’s Pop-Tarts Bowl was the 156th TD of his career. He entered the game tied with former Houston QB Case Keenum for the most touchdowns of any player in Division I history.

Not long after finding George in the end zone, Ward got TD No. 157 with a 22-yard TD pass to Joshisa Trader early in the second quarter.

Keenum played in four-plus seasons for the Cougars and threw his TDs across 57 games from 2007 through 2011. He led college football with 44 TD passes in 2009 and then threw 48 TD passes in 2011.

Ward’s pass to George was his 37th TD of the season. He has the most passing TDs of any player in college football this season and the only player with a realistic shot at passing him by the end of the season is Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Sanders enters the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night with 35 passing TDs.

This was Ward’s only season at Miami as he heads to the NFL in 2025. Ward flirted with going to the NFL after the 2024 season, but decided to transfer to Miami for his final season of eligibility instead of going pro.

That turned into the right decision. Ward was a Heisman Trophy finalist this season and boosted his NFL Draft stock. He’s likely to be a top-10 pick in this spring’s draft because of his performance in 2024.

Before coming to Miami, Ward spent two seasons at Washington State and was at Incarnate Word for two seasons. At Washington State, Ward threw for 48 touchdown passes across 25 games with nearly 7,000 yards. He threw for 47 TDs in 2021 at Incarnate Word and had 4,648 passing yards while averaging 4.9 yards an attempt.

Miami’s Cam Ward made history in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, setting the Division I career passing touchdown record with a stellar performance. Ward’s record-breaking touchdown pass came in the second quarter of the game, solidifying his place in college football history.

Ward’s accomplishment is a testament to his talent and hard work throughout his collegiate career. The Miami quarterback has been a standout player for the team, consistently leading them to victory with his impressive passing skills.

Fans and analysts alike have been singing Ward’s praises, recognizing him as one of the top quarterbacks in college football. His record-breaking performance in the Pop-Tarts Bowl only solidifies his place as a true standout on the field.

Congratulations to Cam Ward on this incredible achievement! Here’s to many more touchdowns and victories in his future.
