  • Timberwolves preaching patience with rookie guard Rob Dillingham

Rudy Gobert remembers spending time in the G League during his rookie season in 2013-14.

Well, back then it was called the D League.

“My ego was hurt, but it felt good to go out there and just play,” Gobert said. “… And also took that frustration and that hunger to be on the floor and to help the team, put that into working harder than anybody else.”

That’s been Gobert’s message to Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Rob Dillingham, who hasn’t spent any time in the G League aside from a two-game stint on a rehab assignment but also hasn’t seen many minutes for the Timberwolves to this point in his young NBA career. That’s not for lack of desire as Dillingham has been itching for more time on the court.

“We have a lot of conversations about that. I tell him it’s a good sign that he’s frustrated,” Gobert said. “If you don’t care, you’re not ambitious enough. So I love that, and the only thing I tell him is to keep doing the work. When you’re frustrated, put that frustration into working more, working harder, learning, taking care of yourself, getting stronger.”

Dillingham has played just 17 games this season, averaging 9.4 minutes per game. Some of that absence has been due to injury — he missed time with a right ankle sprain — but there have also been games where there simply hasn’t been room for him. It’s not because the Wolves have changed their tune on him since moving up to get him No. 8 overall in this year’s NBA draft, it’s because finding minutes for a rookie can be challenging on a team that already boasts a lot of guard depth.

“It’s important to kind of set it all in context. It’s hard for rookies to play meaningful minutes for teams that are trying to win at the top of the table. It just is,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said. “You have to wait, be patient, like (Dillingham) is gonna be an extremely good player in this league for a long time to come. We’re all confident of that, and he just has to keep staying ready, and obviously the ankle injury kind of derailed any little momentum we had, but he played extremely well.

“And just yeah, gotta have patience. I think it’s important to realize, these guys, sometimes it’s the first time in their life they’ve never played. It’s mentally really challenging for those guys. Have to see light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s a long season and all the cliches, but they all are true.”

The good news is Dillingham has found more opportunities for minutes since returning from injury (of course, the bad news is they’ve come because Donte DiVincenzo has been sidelined the last two games with a toe injury). Regardless of the circumstance, Dillingham is making the most of his opportunity. After all, nothing is guaranteed for the rookie.

On Friday, Dillingham had nine points and three assists in 13 minutes in a win over the New York Knicks, and on Saturday, he had 12 points and two assists in 18 minutes of action in a loss to the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers.

On Saturday, Finch elected to play Dillingham with the starters down the stretch in the fourth quarter, hoping his speed could help spark a run facing a 20-point deficit. Despite struggling to shoot during his first stint in the first half, Dillingham came alive in the fourth quarter and helped the Wolves close the gap to as few as five points with 12 seconds remaining.

The game was a learning experience for Dillingham. For one, he was often switched defensively onto the likes of Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, a crash course in trying to stick with the NBA’s best guards as an undersized player.

“I feel like before it was like alright, when I get a switch, I got to get off of him. Now it’s like, I just got to guard. So that’s how I look at it and I try to take on everyone, and even if I get a foul, you got to foul them (rather) than let them score,” he said.

It also came against his friend in Garland, who, at 6-foot-1, 192 pounds, could perhaps provide a blueprint for the 6-foot-3, 175-pound Dillingham as a player who’s shown what it takes to thrive as an undersized guard in the league.

“He definitely has a lot of things I could take after. Learning to draw fouls, getting all his players involved, also scoring the ball, so definitely can learn a bunch from him,” Dillingham said of Garland.

Minutes won’t be guaranteed for Dillingham. There will likely be more games this season where he doesn’t see minutes once DiVincenzo returns. But he’s still just a 20-year-old rookie. The key will be patience, maintaining the drive to improve that he already possesses, and just like Gobert said, turning that frustration of sparing minutes into something positive.

If it hasn’t already, Dillingham’s time will come. The Timberwolves have no doubts about that.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are preaching patience with their rookie guard Rob Dillingham, and for good reason. The young player, known for his flashy playmaking and scoring ability, has shown flashes of potential in his first few games in the NBA.

Despite his impressive skill set, the Timberwolves are taking a cautious approach with Dillingham, understanding that the transition to the NBA can be challenging for even the most talented rookies. Head coach Chris Finch has emphasized the importance of allowing Dillingham to develop at his own pace and not putting too much pressure on him too soon.

Dillingham himself has expressed his gratitude for the team’s patient approach, acknowledging that he still has a lot to learn and improve upon in his game. With the support of his coaches and teammates, he is confident that he will continue to grow and make a positive impact on the team.

While fans may be eager to see Dillingham reach his full potential, the Timberwolves are focused on nurturing his talent and ensuring that he has a successful and sustainable career in the NBA. By preaching patience with their rookie guard, they are setting him up for long-term success and helping him realize his full potential.

Candidates emerge in SDSU football coaching search as alumni & players encourage patience

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – 48 hours after Jimmy Rogers stepped down as head football coach at South Dakota State to accept the same position at Washington State it appears as though SDSU is moving quickly and possibly closing in on his successor.

Sources have indicated to Dakota News Now Sports that two names have emerged as front-runners, each with ties to the program. Former Jackrabbit linebacker Dan Jackson, who spent eight seasons in Brookings in a variety of assistant coaching roles and also served as recruiting coordinator, has interviewed.

He left in 2020 to coach defensive backs and special teams at FBS Northern Illinois and then spent two more years at Vanderbilt in the SEC as defensive coordinator. Following the dismissal of that staff Jackson joined former SDSU offensive coordinator Jason Eck at Idaho as defensive coordinator and had followed him to the University of New Mexico where he was hired several weeks ago in his current role of defensive coordinator.

One of Jackson’s fellow former SDSU assistants, Christian Smith, is also in the mix.

After a four year career at Toledo and three years as a graduate assistant at his alma mater and Iowa State, Smith became the Jackrabbits defensive line coach in 2017 and stayed with the school for six years, helping State win their first FCS National Title in 2022 before leaving for his current role as defensive line coach at Northwestern.

As the wait for a head coach continues the question of how many players may depart lingers. Sources also tell Dakota News Now that alumni and several current players have been contacting teammates encouraging them to wait and make any decision to stay or transfer until a new coach is named and introduced.

Late this afternoon about 20 current players committed to returning next season including starting offensive lineman Quentin Christensen and the projected starting quarterback for next season Chase Mason.

As the search for a new head coach for San Diego State University’s football team continues, several potential candidates have started to emerge. Alumni and current players have been vocal in encouraging patience as the university looks to make the best hiring decision for the program’s future.

Among the names being mentioned as potential candidates are former NFL coach Herm Edwards, current Arizona State defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce, and former SDSU player and current Fresno State coach Kalen DeBoer. Each of these candidates brings a unique set of skills and experiences that could benefit the Aztecs football program.

While fans and supporters of the team are eager to see a new coach in place, many are echoing the sentiment of alumni and players in urging patience. It’s important for the university to take the time necessary to thoroughly vet each candidate and make a decision that will set the program up for success in the long run.

As the search continues, the SDSU community remains hopeful and excited for the future of Aztecs football. With a strong pool of candidates to choose from, there is confidence that the university will find the right person to lead the team to continued success on and off the field. Stay tuned for updates on the coaching search and Go Aztecs!

  • Faith, patience and support fuel running back’s return to Lions’ active roster

Faith, patience and support fuel running back’s return to Lions’ active roster

ALLEN PARK — From the way the coaching staff speaks about his work ethic to how his teammates engage with him in the locker room, it’s evident that Jermar Jefferson is highly regarded within the Detroit Lions organization.

A seventh-round pick by the Lions in 2021, Jefferson has remained with the organization since then — albeit mainly on the practice squad — despite changes to the Lions’ running back room over the past few seasons.

His inactivity changed last Sunday against the Chicago Bears. With David Montgomery sidelined by an MCL injury, the fourth-year back was promoted to the active roster for backfield depth, seeing his first regular-season action since his rookie year.

“It felt great. It’s been a while,” Jefferson told MLive. “I remember coming out there telling ‘em like, ‘Man, I’m back!’ My energy, and I was just full of excitement just to be back on the field.

“I’ve been excited. I was excited for the (Bears) game before I stepped on the field … hopefully I put on some good film.”

Against the Bears, Jefferson had a solid performance in limited play, showcasing his versatility. Jefferson saw 19 snaps between offense and special teams. He ended the day with three carries for 13 yards and one catch for 10 yards.

While he hasn’t been in Detroit with Jefferson the entire time, Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery compared Jefferson to a heavyweight boxer waiting on his opportunity when discussing the team’s depth at the position. Montgomery praised Jefferson’s work ethic earlier in the week and shared with MLive that he was pleased with what he saw from him once he got his chance to play.

“The things that we’ve seen to this point, I mean, we’re really pleased. We think that he’s an all-purpose guy,” Montgomery said. “We can run him, of course, we can throw the ball to him out of the backfield, but the biggest thing is he hasn’t had a lot of reps with our starting unit. But when he gets in there, and he doesn’t miss a beat, man.

“So that’s a big deal when a guy can not have a lot of reps, come in, understand protection, understand the run game. But he’s been doing this thing for a long time, so we weren’t surprised at all.”

The words Montgomery uttered about Jefferson are all the 24-year-old Los Angeles native wanted. He didn’t care where the Lions placed him or how he was used. For him, he just knew in his heart that he belonged on the field.

And his faith never wavered that he’d one day get to showcase his skill set again in a Lions uniform.

“I just had to stay patient. I prayed,” Jefferson said. “I’m very close with God, so I just kept coming in here, kept coming to work, putting my head down, and getting to work, just waiting patiently. That’s what I learned throughout this whole process these past three years — patience is key.”

Carrying that mindset presented some challenges that Jefferson had to deal with, as not seeing the field wasn’t easy. Along with having a strong and devout faith in a higher power, Jefferson leaned on a solid support system.

For starters, his family was in his corner, sharing, “They’re the ones keeping me sane.” He spoke with his mother, Tracy Green, regularly and his father, Herb Jefferson — who played football at Sonoma State — daily.

But another tool at Jefferson’s disposal, one that some players aren’t customarily forthcoming about, was therapy. He shared that during his first two years with the Lions, he’d meet with the team psychologist, Dr. Michelle Garvin, at least twice a week.

“I was real close with Dr. Garvin. I used to meet with her a lot and just talk about on-the-field and off-the-field stuff,” Jefferson said. “I feel like she helped me mentally throughout that whole process.

“And just past coaches that used to be here like Duce (Staley)— and Scottie too — helped a lot. I still talk to my college coach (Michael Pitre) right now, the running backs coach on the (Atlanta) Falcons. So I talk to him a lot, and he just says, ‘Stay patient and be ready whenever that opportunity comes.’”

While preparing for the opportunity, Jefferson buckled down on learning all the intricacies of the Lions’ offense, from the passing game to pass protection, not just running the way Staley or Montgomery desired from him. Knowing that the Lions coaching staff preaches a “next man up” mentality, Jefferson took his practice reps seriously.

The work that he’s put in over the four years will have another chance to be on display when the Lions face the 49ers in a rematch of last season’s NFC title game. With Montgomery still out of action, it’s expected that Jefferson will see snaps — along with Craig Reynolds — to ease the burden on starter Jahmyr Gibbs.

“I’m very amped for that game,” Jefferson said. “Monday night, my first time playing in a prime-time game, so that’s (gonna) be exciting. Just know I’m going to have the most positive energy on Monday night.”

Throughout his recovery process, Williams leaned on his faith to stay positive and motivated. He trusted that everything happened for a reason and that he would come back stronger than ever. His patience was tested as he worked tirelessly to rehabilitate his injury and regain his strength and agility. But with each setback, Williams remained resilient and focused on his ultimate goal of returning to the game he loves.

‘Rohit Sharma is finished’: India captain told to ‘retire’, hand over leadership to Bumrah as fans lose patience

Rohit Sharma‘s return as an opener did not bear the desired result at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as the right-handed batter once again registered a single-digit score in the series. Rohit, 37, lasted just five balls in the first innings of the fourth Test against Australia and departed after scoring just 3 runs.

India’s Rohit Sharma prepares to bat on the second day of the fourth cricket Test match between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)(AFP)

The Indian captain has come under severe scrutiny and criticism for his below-par returns in Tests. As expected, netizens are not pleased with Rohit’s performance, and his latest dismissal has sparked a plethora of reactions on social media.

In his last 14 innings, Rohit Sharma has managed just 152 runs. After missing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth, Rohit has registered scores of 3,6,10 and 3. In the absence of Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah led India in the first Test, which the visitors won by 295 runs.

Rohit Sharma’s lack of runs and his captaincy are both being questioned. In the Melbourne Test, the management went in with three all-rounders (Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy).

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote, “Out of form is one thing, but Rohit Sharma is giving Negative Energy now. That Negative energy is reflecting not just on his batting performance but also showing on team. Never thought player like him will be washed like this even in sunset phase of career. But that’s what Test cricket does. Take Retirement and Leave.”

Here are some of the other reactions:

    Rohit Sharma’s form under scanner

Even in the pink-ball practice game against Australia Prime Minister’s XI, Rohit disappointed, scoring just three runs. In the prior series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, the India captain registered one score of more than 50.

After Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting called out the Indian captain for playing a lazy shot. “That’s just a lazy, not-switched-on, not-up-for-the-moment type of shot,” Ricky Ponting said on 7 Cricket.

Earlier, former India captain and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar had said that Rohit might retire if he fails to score runs in Melbourne and Sydney. Gavaskar made the comment during the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Gabba, Brisbane.

“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” he had said while doing commentary for ABC Sport.

“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down,” he added.

Rohit Sharma is finished: India captain told to ‘retire’, hand over leadership to Bumrah as fans lose patience

After a disappointing performance by the Indian cricket team, fans have begun calling for captain Rohit Sharma to step down and retire from the game. The team’s recent series loss has left supporters frustrated and impatient, with many believing that it is time for a change in leadership.

Rohit Sharma, who took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli earlier this year, has failed to deliver the results that fans had hoped for. Despite his success as a player, many believe that he is not the right man to lead the team and that it is time for a new captain to take charge.

Some fans have even gone as far as to suggest that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah should be handed the captaincy, citing his leadership qualities and impressive performances on the field. They believe that Bumrah has the potential to lead the team to success and that it is time for a fresh start.

As the calls for Rohit Sharma to step down grow louder, it remains to be seen how the Indian cricket board will respond. Will Rohit Sharma choose to retire from the game and hand over the reins to Bumrah, or will he fight to prove his critics wrong? Only time will tell.

  • Nottingham Forest vs. Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Preview: The gift of patience

Nottingham Forest vs. Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Preview: The gift of patience

Christmas has passed, and Tottenham Hotspur finds itself in the bottom half of the Premier League table. While three matches in the next 10 days present an opportunity for quick movement — especially with just six points separating fifth and 13th — it feels like Spurs’ chances to salvage this domestic campaign are reaching the danger zone. Boxing Day’s visit to a top-four Nottingham Forest side is just one match in isolation, but given the current state of affairs, every single fixture feels massive.

Forest has enjoyed a remarkable start to the season, though analytics and betting markets are slow to believe. Spurs are still given comparable odds to secure a top-four finish, despite the current eight-point gap. These projections may be valid once key absentees are back to full health, but for now these sides look nothing alike. A win on Thursday could fuel optimism for a resurgence, but a loss would validate Tottenham’s place in the table.

    Nottingham Forest (4th, 31pts) vs. Tottenham Hotspur (t-11th, 23pts)

    Date: Thursday, December 26
Time: 10:00 am ET, 3:00 pm UK
    Location: The City Ground, Nottingham
TV: Peacock (US), Amazon Prime Video (UK)

How does a team ranked 13th in goals scored sit in fourth place? The answer lies in Forest’s stingy defense, which has conceded just 19 goals in 17 matches. Despite a nearly even goal difference, Forest has mastered the art of efficient scoring — winners of four of its last five, three came by a single goal. It has been quite the season for Nuno Espirito Santo after just barely escaping relegation following his appointment last winter.

Tottenham played a pivotal role in that managerial shake-up, defeating Steve Cooper’s side 2-0 at the City Ground, a result that ultimately led to Nuno’s appointment. Spurs completed the league double with a 3-1 victory at the new Lane, thanks to goals from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro. Since Forest’s promotion in 2022/23, Spurs have taken all 12 points, though Forest did manage a win in the League Cup that season.

    All or Nothing

While Forest has thrived on narrow victories, Tottenham has been the opposite: the last five league wins have all been by at least three goals. Spurs’ attack has been inconsistent this season, but they have scored 16 goals in their past five matches across all competitions. Unfortunately, defensive frailties have been equally prominent, making Tottenham one of the league’s most high-event teams. This clash of styles — Forest’s defensive discipline against Spurs’ attacking firepower — sets the stage for an interesting affair.

Despite Forest’s defensive solidity, Tottenham’s red-hot attack gives it reasons for optimism. Newcastle, Arsenal, and City each put three past Forest in (somewhat) recent victories, exposing its potential vulnerabilities. Ange Postecoglou’s side has shown its attacking prowess lately, as the key injuries at the club are more detrimental to the defense. If Spurs are to leave the City Ground with three points, they will need to rely on their attackers to compensate for a shaky back line yet again.

    The strongest wills

Postecoglou remains steadfast in his philosophy and approach. Critics frustrated with his commitment to an attacking style that leaves the defense exposed will not find solace anytime soon. However, a loss to the league’s best team does not really teach us anything new. Even a more conservative style would not suddenly make this group of defenders world-class, and any such shift would inevitably come at the expense of the team’s attacking prowess.

I agree with Postecoglou’s belief that the only viable path is to press forward, regardless of who is available. While this may lead to continued frustrations, it is essential to view this as a long-term project rather than a quick fix. Watching teams like Forest climb the table on the back of strong defending can be disheartening, but that is not the direction this club has chosen. A win Thursday would go a long way to justify this path that has been established.

As Nottingham Forest prepares to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, the stage is set for an exciting showdown between two talented teams. Both sides have had their ups and downs this season, but one thing is clear – patience will be key in this match.

Nottingham Forest, currently sitting mid-table in the Premier League, have shown glimpses of their potential throughout the season. With a solid defense and a dynamic attacking lineup, they have the ability to compete with the top teams in the league. However, consistency has been an issue for Forest, and they will need to remain patient and focused in order to secure a positive result against Tottenham.

On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur have had a challenging season so far, with a string of disappointing results and injuries plaguing the team. However, under the guidance of new manager Antonio Conte, Spurs have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks. With key players returning to fitness and a renewed sense of confidence, Tottenham will be looking to build on their recent success and continue their climb up the Premier League table.

In this matchup, the gift of patience will be crucial for both teams. Nottingham Forest will need to stay disciplined in defense and capitalize on their opportunities in attack, while Tottenham will need to trust in their game plan and not get frustrated if things don’t go their way early on.

As the two teams prepare to face off, fans can expect an intense and competitive match. Both sides have the talent and determination to come out on top, but it will ultimately come down to which team can show the most patience and composure on the day.

So, as Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur prepare to do battle, remember the gift of patience – it may just be the key to success in this Premier League showdown.
