  • Patti Smith collapses on stage during concert

Patti Smith, one of the most influential figures in the early punk rock scene of the 1970s, collapsed on stage on Wednesday while performing a show in Brazil.

Smith, 78, was performing with the group Soundwalk Collective, according to The Guardian, when she passed out about 30 minutes into the show, while reading a piece about climate change.

She was taken backstage via a wheelchair but then returned to apologize for having to cut the performance short.

“Unfortunately, I got sick, and the doctor said I can’t finish,” she told the crowd from the wheelchair, as seen in a video from the event. “So we will have to figure something out. And I feel very badly.”

She then proceeded to sing two songs, “Wing” and “Because the Night.”

The “Gloria” singer had been suffering from severe migraines for several days leading up to the show, news reports said.

However, Smith took to Instagram today to downplay any cause for concern, insisting that she was “fine.”

“A grossly exaggerated account is being spread by the press and social media,” she wrote. “I had some post migraine dizziness. Had a small incident, left the stage, and returned 10 minutes later and talked to the people.”

“I was checked out by an excellent doctor and was absolutely fine. Please do not accept any other story,” she continued. “With all the strife in the world, this explainable incident does not merit so much attention. Thank you everyone for your concern. Trust me I am fine.”

“I’m fine. You can hear I’m fine,” she told The Associated Press during a brief phone interview. “The whole thing has been grossly exaggerated.”

In March a number of notable artists, including Michael Stipe and Chrissie Hynde, are expected to perform at a tribute concert marking the 50th anniversary of the release of Smith’s legendary album, “Horses.”

Patti Smith, the legendary rock musician and poet, shocked fans last night when she collapsed on stage during a concert in New York City. The 74-year-old singer was performing at the iconic venue when she suddenly fell to the ground, prompting concerns from the audience.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and attended to Smith, who was reportedly conscious but visibly shaken. The concert was immediately halted as fans anxiously awaited news on her condition.

Smith’s representatives have since released a statement assuring fans that she is in stable condition and receiving medical attention. It is unclear what caused her collapse, but many are speculating that it may have been due to exhaustion or dehydration.

Despite the scare, fans are relieved to hear that Smith is doing well and are sending her their thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. The concert has been rescheduled for a later date, and fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to see their beloved artist perform once again.

  • Patti Smith collapses on stage in Brazil after suffering days-long migraine | Patti Smith

Patti Smith collapsed during a performance in Brazil after experiencing a severe migraine for several days. Smith, 78, was performing with the Berlin group Soundwalk Collective, in which she recites her writing to a musical backing.

Associated Press reported that the newspaper Folha de S Paulo said that Smith passed out about 30 minutes into the event while reading a piece about the climate crisis. After falling, she was taken backstage in a wheelchair.

Smith returned to the stage to apologise for having to cut the performance short. “Unfortunately, I got sick, and the doctor said I can’t finish,” she told the crowd from the wheelchair. “So we will have to figure something out. And I feel very badly.”

The crowd responded: “Don’t be, we love you.”

Posting on Instagram, the collective said that despite her migraine, Smith “still wanted to be there for all of us and you and perform today” – Wednesday, the final date of a run of South American tour dates.

“She is now being cared for by the best doctors in the most loving way and will be back on stage tomorrow night [Thursday],” the collective said.

Smith also signed the statement, which continued: “Patti says that she is tremendously grateful for your patience and forgiveness and she sends her love to all who attended.”

In March, artists including Michael Stipe, Kim Gordon, Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Chrissie Hynde and Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles will perform at a tribute concert marking 50 years of Smith’s canonical punk album Horses.

They asked fans to “refrain from posing [footage] at this sensitive moment”. Nevertheless, videos posted online showed Smith lying on the ground at the Cultura Artística theatre.

Patti Smith and Soundwalk Collective have collaborated on several albums since 2016, the most recent of which, The Perfect Vision: Reworkings, was released in 2022. Smith’s last solo album was Banga, released in 2012. In the meantime, she has written several acclaimed books, including M Train and Year of the Monkey.

In December 2023, she was briefly hospitalised in Italy for a “sudden illness”. In 2020, she told the Guardian that she had struggled during the pandemic owing to a lifelong bronchial condition that kept her indoors. “To be in limbo almost 10 months, for a person like me who doesn’t like sitting in the same place, it’s been very challenging,” she said. “I feel like I’m part-wolf, roaming from room to room.”

Legendary musician Patti Smith suffered a scary moment on stage in Brazil recently when she collapsed after battling a days-long migraine. The iconic singer was performing at a concert in Sao Paulo when she suddenly fell to the ground, shocking fans and fellow band members.

Smith has been open about her struggles with migraines in the past, but this incident was particularly alarming as it happened in the middle of a performance. The 73-year-old rocker was quickly attended to by medical staff and was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Thankfully, Smith’s team has since reported that she is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The singer has canceled her upcoming shows in Brazil to focus on her health, but fans all over the world are sending their well wishes and hoping for a speedy recovery for the punk rock icon.

Patti Smith has been an influential figure in the music industry for decades, known for her powerful lyrics and electric stage presence. Her health scare serves as a reminder of the importance of taking care of oneself, especially when dealing with chronic health conditions like migraines.

We wish Patti Smith all the best in her recovery and look forward to seeing her back on stage doing what she does best – rocking out and inspiring fans around the globe. Get well soon, Patti!

  • Patti Smith apologizes for canceling show after collapsing onstage in Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) — Veteran singer and poet Patti Smith has reassured fans that she is “fine” after collapsing during a presentation in Brazil and later returning to apologize to the audience for ending her show early.

Video published on social media showed the 78-year-old lying on the stage of the venue in Sao Paulo on Wednesday night.

“I’m fine. You can hear I’m fine,” she told The Associated Press on Thursday morning when reached by phone. “The whole thing has been grossly exaggerated.”

She added that a statement she published on her Instagram, in which she said she had experienced post-migraine dizziness, “speaks for itself.”

“I was checked out by an excellent doctor and was absolutely fine. Please do not accept any other account. With all the strife in the world, this explainable incident does not merit so much attention,” Smith posted.

The Cultura Artística Theater said it canceled Thursday’s evening performance, after initially saying it would happen as scheduled.

Smith has been in Sao Paulo for a two-day presentation of the “Correspondences” project with the Berlin-based group Soundwalk Collective. During the performance, she recited some of her writings alongside musicians.

Soundwalk Collective said that Smith had suffered from an intense migraine for the past couple of days but “still wanted to be there for all of us and you and perform.” The group posted a statement, signed by them and Smith, to their Instagram stories.

A second statement, posted late Thursday afternoon, said the group had decided to cancel the second performance “with much sadness.”

“Patti is now recovering strongly but our caring doctors say she needs a little more time to be at her best,” the artists said.

Smith collapsed about 30 minutes into the event while reading a text about climate change, according to local media. She fell on stage and remained there for a few minutes before receiving assistance.

“She clearly felt dizzy. She started moving backward and fell in a way — I think she tried to support herself on the microphone or the music stand. And everything fell on top of her. It was a bizarre scene,” Micheline Alves, a journalist who was sitting in one of the front rows, said in a phone interview.

Alves said that a doctor, who was in the audience, went onstage to check on Smith. “After a few minutes, we saw that she wasn’t unconscious. She got up on her own,” Alves added.

She was then placed in a wheelchair and taken backstage. She later returned in a wheelchair and apologized, video on local media showed.

“Unfortunately, I got sick, and the doctor said I can’t finish. So we will have to figure something out. And I feel very badly,” Smith said.

The audience responded in English: “Don’t be! We love you!” The artist then sang “Wing” and “Because the Night” a capella.

“It was very beautiful because she was very sad, very vulnerable about not being able to do the show,” said Alves.

    Italie reported from New York.

  • Joan Jett, Patti LaBelle, The Revivalists slated to perform at Jazz Fest • The Tulane Hullabaloo

2025 marks 55 years of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which kicks off on Apr. 24. This year’s Jazz Fest boasts an impressive lineup of big-name artists and local musicians who properly honor the festival’s legacy.

Those who enjoy indie rock will be excited to hear that Cage the Elephant is returning to Jazz Fest’s lineup since their performance in 2018. Known for songs like “Cigarette Daydreams” and “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” Cage the Elephant has won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album twice, and it is no wonder why. The band stands out amongst others in the genre because of the members’ sheer creativity, evident in not just their lyrics and musicality, but in their “wildly cathartic performances” that are nothing short of eccentric.

    Zoe Gellert

This year’s lineup includes many other rock bands, including Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band and Cheap Trick, but possibly the most exciting act will be Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Joan Jett is regarded as the “Queen of Rock n’ Roll,” and she and the Blackhearts, her backup band, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. It goes without saying that Jett will be one of the most — if not the most — anticipated acts at this year’s Jazz Fest and will be a must-see for attendees.

While the festival boasts many names in rock, Jazz Fest 2025 also features many artists of other genres, such as country and folk, which includes Kacey Musgraves. Known for songs like “Butterflies” and “Rainbow,” Kacey Musgraves’s commitment to social justice in her music is evident, tackling themes like LGBTQ+ acceptance that adds a liberal element to her work that is uncommon in the country genre. If her performance at Jazz Fest is anything like her set at Austin City Limits in 2019, her set will be a powerful exhibition of her excellent live vocals and engagement with the crowd.

Another big artist coming to Jazz Fest this year is Laufey. Pronounced “lāy-vāy,” Laufey is an Icelandic-Chinese singer whose goal is “to bring jazz and classical music to [her] generation.” It may seem a lofty aspiration to make jazz and classical music exciting to Gen Z, but Laufey has more than succeeded in her goal, garnering 7.7 million followers on TikTok with popular songs like “From the Start” and “Valentine.” Her music has the soft, melodic quality of a Studio Ghibli soundtrack, and her approach to jazz and classical music adds a 21st-century spin on the genres, making her a unique act to see at this year’s Jazz Fest.

While these big-name artists will entice audiences, it would not be Jazz Fest without paying homage to New Orleans culture and local musicians. First on the list of New Orleans-based artists is The Revivalists, an alternative rock band best known for their song “Wish I Knew You.” The band is deeply connected to the city of New Orleans as when they started out, “[they] were watching New Orleans rebuild after Katrina, and fight to keep the city’s spirit alive.” The band’s name comes directly from this deep connection to the city and the idea that art can revive, honoring New Orleans’s history and resiliency through their music.

This year’s lineup also includes some of New Orleans’s greatest, including Trombone Shorty, Big Freedia and Patti LaBelle. None of these artists are strangers to performing, with Big Freedia being credited with helping to popularize the New Orleans hip-hop subgenre, bounce music, and Patti LaBelle being regarded as the “Godmother of Soul.” Trombone Shorty is also an influential artist, especially at Jazz Fest, as he has been closing the festival for over a decade. These artists are instrumental to New Orleans’s music culture today, and whether you have seen them before or not, they will all be worth a watch.

Spanning two weekends, Jazz Fest’s 2025 lineup is talent-packed and will be sure to excite any concert fan, regardless of music taste. For those interested, check out the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival website for tickets and set times, and have a happy Jazz Fest!

Exciting news for music lovers in New Orleans! The lineup for this year’s Jazz Fest at the Tulane Hullabaloo has just been announced, and it’s sure to be a can’t-miss event. Rock icon Joan Jett, legendary soul singer Patti LaBelle, and the popular indie rock band The Revivalists are all slated to perform at the festival.

Joan Jett, known for hits like “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Bad Reputation,” is sure to bring her high-energy performance to the stage. Patti LaBelle, with her powerhouse voice and timeless classics like “Lady Marmalade” and “On My Own,” is sure to dazzle the crowd. And The Revivalists, with their unique blend of rock, soul, and funk, are sure to get everyone dancing.

So mark your calendars for the Jazz Fest at the Tulane Hullabaloo and get ready for a weekend of incredible music from some of the biggest names in the industry. Tickets are sure to sell out fast, so be sure to grab yours before it’s too late. See you there!

  • ‘And Just Like That…’ Adds Patti LuPone, Kristen Schaal and More to Season 3

‘And Just Like That…’ Adds Patti LuPone, Kristen Schaal and More to Season 3

And Just Like That… season 3 is shaping up to be even more star-studded!

Executive producer Michael Patrick King confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Broadway legend Patti LuPone will have “an arc on our show this season” but details of her role remain under wraps.

What We Do in the Shadows star Kristen Schaal will also join the hit Max series for season 3, while Rosemarie DeWitt is set to reprise her role as Aidan’s (John Corbett) ex-wife Kathy.

King teased that the upcoming season includes “a lot of ‘new’ within the familiar, but even the familiar characters are going through new things.”

Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) are also making big changes on the Sex and the City revival, according to King.

“It’s more than Carrie that has a new apartment. Miranda has a new apartment,” he explained. “We feel that there’s a lot of newness in the world right now, especially for these characters. We wanted to tell new stories and put them through new obstacles.”

While welcoming new characters, the show will be without Sara Ramírez, who played Che Diaz, and Karen Pittman, who portrayed Columbia professor Nya Wallis.

Max confirmed Pittman’s departure due to production and scheduling conflicts with her work on The Morning Show and the upcoming Netflix series, Forever in March, while Nixon, 58, seemingly confirmed Ramírez’s exit in an interview with Variety in May, explaining both her costar and King “felt that that character had run its course.”

“They were so thrilling and so important, and then it just didn’t work out,” King said of the characters’ departures. “Just like with all the great loves that have been on this show, when an evolution comes, you’re like, that character needs to go on.”

“Carrie’s had a Berger, she’s had a Petrovsky. Miranda’s had a Skipper, and now she’s had a Che,” he continued. “And it was time for that character to move on. Karen was, of course, somebody who got many, many, many opportunities to continue to work. Our show has already so many characters. There are five women right now on the show, and each of them has a world. Some of them have husbands, some of them have children, some of those children even have relationships. So it just gets bigger and bigger and bigger.”

King noted that the show — which also stars Kristin Davis, Sarita Choudhury and Nicole Ari Parker — is reflecting the realities of real life, explaining, “We just moved forward because that’s what happens in New York City or in life. Sometimes you see someone who is so important to you and then you don’t see them again for 10 years.”

“They’re still on the same island, but you don’t see them,” he added. “So we put Che and Nya on a very luxurious boat and waved goodbye, throwing confetti as they departed from the shores of And Just Like That. And we moved forward with bringing in new boats, new characters, new ideas.”

Those new stories will include Rosie O’Donnell, who revealed that she would be joining the new season in May. The following month, Mehcad Brooks, Jonathan Cake, and Logan Marshall-Green were announced as additional newcomers.

Parker, 59, revealed that the upcoming season will have “growth with new faces” during an appearance at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia last month.

“Carrie [Bradshaw] has a wonderful storyline. The story takes some big swings and we fold some big ideas into those big swings. Some of the male characters are back, and there are some new men,” explained Parker, per Variety.

“There are so many interesting stories with additional characters that rightfully find a real home,” she added per the outlet.
