  • LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman sees bright AI future and hopes his tech peers are right about Trump

LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman has been immersed in Silicon Valley since his August 1967 birth in Palo Alto, California, in the shadow of Stanford University, where he and fellow technology luminary Peter Thiel became friends as college students during the 1980s.

They went on to start PayPal during the late 1990s while working alongside a coterie of other bright-eyed entrepreneurs who went on to even bigger things, just as Hoffman did. That group — dubbed the “PayPal Mafia” — included Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, and YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

Now worth an estimated $2.6 billion, Hoffman has been at the forefront of the artificial intelligence craze while investing in trailblazing startups such as ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Inflection. Unlike other prominent technologists who are worried about AI destroying humanity, Hoffman has co-written a new book called “Superagency” that makes an optimistic case for AI. He recently talked with The Associated Press.

Q: Are humans creating something smarter than themselves with AI?

A: You already have some version of superintelligence right now. Obviously, we will be increasing that superintelligence, so we need to be thinking about which ways it’s going to be making great additions and which ways it’s going to make things more challenging.

Humans are generally bad at transitions, and that is part of the reason for writing books like “Superagency,” to try to say there are some positive design principles, some positive outcomes that we should be trying to work our way toward.

Q: Do you think there is a chance that these superintelligent AI agents eventually may seem omniscient?

A: AI agents are pretty useful for coaching and advising. Like if you were to say, “Hey, how should I approach this thorny problem?” An AI agent can be a pretty good advice-giving coach. And so you can imagine it being a useful tutor across a wide variety of subjects, including even spiritual or counseling or mental ones. And I think that could be positive for the evolution of humanity, having something talking to us that is infinitely patient and is trying to help us get to our better selves. So, yes, you could have a “Consult the Oracle” situation with AI agents.

Q: What’s the risk of some people embracing AI as a bosom buddy and becoming more socially isolated?

A: Some of that will happen for sure, the same way some people isolated themselves with TV or the internet. Part of this will be about the design focus. If you go to Inflection’s AI agent, Pi, and say, “Hey you’re my best friend,” Pi, will say, “No, I am your AI companion, let’s talk about your friendships. Have you seen any of your friends recently or want to see them?” We want AI agents being softly and gently encouraging, to be tied into the human circumstance, which I think is what most people really want.

Q: On the flip side, as these AI agents become more human-like, could that get people more in touch with their own humanity?

A: Our humanity is expressed in how we incorporate technology in our lives, just as we are communicating through Zoom for this interview. I think that is part of our humanity.

Q: Switching topics, are you worried about President Trump retaliating against you for being one of Kamala Harris’ biggest supporters in Silicon Valley leading up to last year’s election?

2024 obviously was a very intense year and what I am trying not to do is speculate too much about that because in 2025 I am going to really focus on how I build and fund really interesting AI companies and other areas that help build industries that make a difference. My obvious hope is that the incoming administration will turn to a positive agenda. I kind of feel at this point that speculation is not really helpful. We will see in a couple of months how it’s all going to play out.

Q: Were you surprised by how much support President Trump got from other technology billionaires like Elon Musk and Marc Andreessen?

A: It wasn’t surprising that the people who were very intensely pro-cryptocurrency were pro-Trump because the Biden administration was so negative on crypto. Also the fact that the Biden administration — unlike the Obama administration — was not putting in a lot of energy into saying, “Hey we think that new technology and new technology companies of the future are really important.” And I think a bunch of the Biden administration staff was somewhat negative on large, tech companies.

What did surprise me — and now I am very much hoping they are right — is that they thought the Trump administration would be very strongly and thoughtfully pro business across the arena. Let’s see what happens with tariffs, let’s hope that it doesn’t play out in a particularly challenging way.

A: Do you think your old PayPal colleagues Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are playing a form of political chess?

The thing that is so important about Silicon Valley is the broadly held belief — even if it’s manifested differently in Peter versus me or other people, — is that the creation of new technology companies is how progress is made. And I think it’s an important mission for the country and the world as well as Silicon Valley. The degree to which they are playing chess around that, I don’t know. But I think they are driven on that mission and part of what they are doing is trying to make sure that mission is fully realized in the Trump administration.

Q: Do you agree with Trump’s supporters in Silicon Valley that it’s time to ease up on the rigorous regulation of tech that we had during President Biden’s administration?

A: I do. I hope there will be much more enablement of technology innovation.

Q: Going back to your book, what do you say about AI pioneers like Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton who now see the technology as a threat to humanity?

A: I tend to rate a lot of risks based on how does it compare to my risk to driving to the airport because every time you get in a car and drive to the airport, the highest risk of the journey is on the drive and not on the plane. If the risk is in the automobile-level of percentage, then I don’t worry about it that much. And, if you say, “Well this is much bigger, this could be an existential human risk.” Then I say, “Well, yeah, that’s part of the reason you put more energy into being protective in navigating and steering it.”

LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman recently shared his optimistic views on the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and expressed hope that his fellow tech industry leaders are right about President Donald Trump.

In a recent interview, Hoffman discussed the potential of AI to revolutionize industries and improve efficiency in various sectors. He emphasized the importance of ethical AI development and the need for responsible implementation of this technology.

Additionally, Hoffman expressed hope that his tech peers are correct in their assessment of President Trump and his administration. Many tech leaders have been critical of Trump’s policies and rhetoric, particularly on issues such as immigration and climate change. However, some have also expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration with the government on areas of mutual interest, such as infrastructure and job creation.

Hoffman’s positive outlook on both AI and the potential for cooperation with the Trump administration reflects his belief in the power of technology to drive positive change. As a prominent figure in the tech industry, his perspectives carry weight and influence, and his optimism is a hopeful sign for the future of innovation and progress.

  • Matt Pinfield Recovering After Stroke, Peers Send Well Wishes

Legendary rock personality Matt Pinfield is recovering after suffering a stroke earlier this month.

There are few music journalists or personalities as beloved and celebrated as Pinfield.

Most well-known for hosting 120 Minutes on MTV, Pinfield has covered a lot of ground throughout his career, from serving as an executive for Columbia Records to helping break bands such as Coheed and Cambria, Crossfade and countless others.

Most recently, Pinfield has taken the helm as co-host of AXS TV’s The Power Hour, serves as the afternoon DJ on KCSN-FM, hosts KLOS-FM’s KLOS New & Approved and is the mastermind of Flashback, a national radio show that celebrates the history of rock ‘n’ roll.

Pinfield has become a friend to the Loudwire staff over the years as well, from writing about the longtime debate about bands using computers onstage to joining his Power Hour co-hosts on Loudwire Nights to help pick some of his favorite songs of the year.

In conversation with Lauryn Schaffner for Grunge: A Verbal History of the Music + Subculture, Pinfield attributed his success with MTV to the bands he worked with. “I was very blessed that the people from the grunge scene, who didn’t trust a lot of people in media, liked and trusted me,” he shared. “They knew that I really loved the music and that I cared about it.”

Unfortunately, on Jan. 6, Pinfield suffered a stroke in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles.

Over the last few weeks, he has been surrounded by family and loved ones and continues to receive care. The good news is that Pinfield is stabilized and resting.

As the news broke in early January, several of his friends, peers and musicians that he’s championed have shared their well wishes to Pinfield on social media. On Jan. 27, TMZ published a story with more details on the situation, which has led to even more positivity being sent to Pinfield during this time.

As of right now, the best thing for the world to do is to continue to offer up thoughts, prayers and good vibes to Pinfield while he recovers.

Below are some friends and musicians who are doing just that, sending well wishes on social media.

All of us at Loudwire wish Matt and his family well as he continues his recovery.

This is my pal Matt Pinfield.

Matt is a legend in the music business, he can school ANYONE in rock n roll trivia, and he is a helluva wonderful human.

Matt suffered a severe stroke recently and has been in the hospital for weeks now.

I’m not asking you for anything. I’m just asking you to keep him in your thoughts.

This dude was a huge believer in me from the get go (Marvelous 3 days in the late 90’s) and before we met on the set at MTV for the show he hosted (120 Minutes), i would watch it religiously. He was like listening to a rock n roll almanac speak when he would talk in between videos.

Most importantly, he LOVES music like no other. It’s in his veins. It’s in his body language when he talks about it. The smile on his face and fire in his eyes when talking about any record you can rattle off to him is so magnetic and beautiful.

I just love him and he is one of the beacons in the music industry that doesn’t give a fuck about making it a business transaction. I can’t say that for most. He just wants MUSIC.

    Keep him in your thoughts.

I love you, Matt. We are gonna get through this and you’re gonna bounce back. I feel it.

  • A Well-Deserved Honor: Sterling Sharpe’s Hall of Fame Induction Celebrated by Fans and Peers

A Well-Deserved Honor: Sterling Sharpe’s Hall of Fame Induction Celebrated by Fans and Peers

The football world was abuzz with excitement as former NFL wide receiver Sterling Sharpe was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, celebrating a long-overdue honor for one of the game’s greatest players.

Sharpe, who played for the Green Bay Packers from 1988 to 1994, was known for his exceptional talent and unmatched skill on the field. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time First-Team All-Pro, and led the league in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns during his career.

Despite his impressive stats and undeniable talent, Sharpe had long been overlooked for Hall of Fame induction, much to the dismay of fans and fellow players alike. But on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Canton, Ohio, all of that changed as Sharpe finally took his rightful place among the game’s greatest legends.

The induction ceremony was a star-studded event, with current and former players, coaches, and fans coming together to celebrate Sharpe’s incredible career. Tears were shed, speeches were given, and memories were shared as Sharpe’s impact on the game was honored and remembered.

One of the most moving moments of the ceremony came when Sharpe’s former quarterback, Brett Favre, took the stage to share his thoughts on his former teammate. Favre spoke of Sharpe’s work ethic, his dedication to the game, and his ability to elevate those around him to greatness. It was clear that Sharpe had made a lasting impression on Favre, as well as on the countless fans who had watched him play over the years.

But perhaps the most touching tribute of all came from Sharpe himself, who used his speech to thank those who had supported him throughout his career. He spoke of the sacrifices his family had made, the coaches who had believed in him, and the fans who had cheered him on through thick and thin. It was a moment of gratitude and humility that resonated with everyone in attendance, reminding us all of the power of hard work, perseverance, and the support of others.

As the ceremony came to a close, Sharpe stood on stage, his Hall of Fame bust gleaming in the sunlight, a symbol of his incredible talent and dedication to the game. The crowd erupted in applause, cheering for a player who had finally received the recognition he so rightly deserved.

In the end, Sterling Sharpe’s Hall of Fame induction was not just a celebration of one man’s accomplishments, but a reminder of the impact that a truly great player can have on the game of football. His legacy will live on for years to come, inspiring future generations of players to strive for greatness and never give up on their dreams. Congratulations, Sterling Sharpe – you have earned this honor, and we are all so proud to celebrate it with you.

  • Coaching peers understand Pelicans, Willie Green’s plight | Pelicans

Coaching peers understand Pelicans, Willie Green’s plight | Pelicans

Ime Udoka’s Houston Rockets beat Willie Green’s team so bad Thursday night that Green called his New Orleans Pelicans’ effort “soft” afterward.

It was a 128-111 beatdown, one of 17 double-digit losses the Pelicans have suffered in what has been a hard season to watch.

One night later, the Pelicans lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, pushing the losing streak to nine games in a row and the record to 5-27.

Only the 2004-05 New Orleans Hornets have started a season worse than this, winning just three of their first 32 games.

As the losses have mounted, so has the frustration among a fan base that has suggested everything from trades to a coaching change.

It goes to show just how quickly things can change in the NBA.

Just eight months ago, Green led the Pelicans to a 49-win season, tied for the second most in franchise history. The Pelicans made the playoffs twice in three seasons, something that hadn’t been done since the then-Hornets made the playoffs in 2009 and 2011.

Udoka, whose Rockets recorded two blowout victories over the Pelicans in a seven-day span, had this to say about the job Green is doing.

“You see great coaches struggle at times throughout their career when injuries hit seasons,” Udoka said. “It’s not that they’re a worse coach all of a sudden. I feel for that situation. I know he is a good coach and put in a tough situation. And I know he’s just trying to stay afloat until guys come back.”

The Rockets have been just the opposite of the Pelicans this season. Udoka’s lineup Thursday was just the fourth different one he has used. That’s the second fewest in the NBA. Green, meanwhile, has used 17 different lineups, which equates to a different lineup almost every other game.

“You’re only as good as the players out there,” Udoka said. “Consistency comes with those guys being available. I feel for that situation with all the guys in and out. Luck in the NBA is a big thing with your record and having consistent lineups out there.”

Let’s be clear. Even without the injured Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans should be much better than what they’ve shown.

The starting lineup Green has played the last eight games (CJ McCollum, Dejounte Murray, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy and Yves Missi) should be good enough to win some games. And even when they don’t win, they should at least be competitive. They should more often than not look like they did against the Grizzlies on Friday than they did the night before when they showed little resistance vs. the Rockets.

Getting Williamson and Ingram back sure would help. Williamson has played in just six games. Ingram has played in 18. The Pelicans are 3-23 without Williamson and 0-14 without Ingram. Williamson, who has battled a hamstring injury, is expected to return to practice this week. So is Jose Alvarado, who has played in just 11 games.

“Durability is important,” Green said. “I don’t think I’m saying anything differently than anyone else on anybody else’s team. The availability of our players is extremely important. The continuity and that togetherness allows you to step on the floor and be your best. Without it, it’s an uphill battle.”

Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins knows all about it. This time a year ago, it was Jenkins juggling all the starting lineups. His Grizzlies used 51 different lineups last season, finishing 27-55. This year Memphis is healthy and in second place in the Western Conference standings.

“It was more about finding development opportunities,” Jenkins said about last season. “It’s definitely a challenge. Every day (for Green) is an opportunity to continue teaching his group. That’s what we focused on.

“Obviously we took our lumps last year. But hopefully that gave us some momentum in the offseason from a player-development standpoint. Obviously getting a healthy group back and you know what you’re capable of with that development on top of the guys that were at the top of the lineup.”

Green has seen that. Murphy, injected into the starting lineup in Ingram’s absence, has proven he can be a star in the NBA. He’s averaging 26.2 points per game. Missi, just two months into his rookie season, has gone from being a project to being in the Rookie of the Year conversation.

So there are some good pieces. It’s up to Green to try to make those pieces fit.

“It’s hard for everybody, especially the head coach,” McCollum said. “… As the season has progressed, we haven’t done the little things as well as we would like. He’s done the best that he can do considering the circumstances of staying even keel and challenging us and holding us to a higher standard.”

David Griffin, the Pelicans executive vice president, hasn’t spoken to the media since the season began. But Green, when asked Friday about Griffin’s message to him during these tough times, had this to say:

“He’s been great,” Green said of Griffin. “Just staying consistent with hoping our guys continue to get better. We understand the uphill battle that we face as a group with the amount of injuries that we’ve faced this season. Trying to have different lineups, shuffling guys in and out of the lineup. That’s what we are facing this year. Griff’s been great and been supportive. We’ll continue on that path as we progress.”

As the New Orleans Pelicans continue to navigate a tumultuous season, new head coach Willie Green finds himself facing a unique set of challenges. In the wake of injuries, roster turnover, and a demanding schedule, Green is tasked with leading a young and inexperienced team to success.

One of the key factors in Green’s success will be his ability to effectively communicate and connect with his players. As a former player himself, Green understands the rigors and pressures of the NBA, and he is well-equipped to relate to his team on a personal level.

However, coaching his peers presents its own set of challenges. Green must strike a delicate balance between being a leader and a friend, guiding his players while also earning their trust and respect. This dynamic requires a high level of emotional intelligence and communication skills, traits that Green has shown in abundance throughout his career.

As the Pelicans look to turn their season around and make a push for the playoffs, it will be crucial for Green to continue building strong relationships with his players and coaching staff. By understanding the unique challenges and opportunities that come with coaching his peers, Green can help lead the Pelicans to success on and off the court.
