Why the Celtics can cover
The Celtics will head into Wednesday’s matchup on the come-up: they were handed a two-point loss on Jan. 27, but they sure didn’t let that happen against the Bulls on Wednesday. The Celtics blew past the Bulls 122-100. Kristaps Porzingis had an outstanding game, shooting 8-for-14 from long range en route to dropping a double-double on 34 points and 11 rebounds. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in threes (eight).
Jaylen Brown was another key player, going 10 for 18 en route to 28 points plus six assists and six rebounds. Jayson Tatum continues to play at an extremely high level on both ends for the Celtics. The six-time NBA All-Star enters Friday’s game averaging 26.7 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. See which team to back here.
Why the Pelicans can cover
Meanwhile, the Pelicans’ recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their fourth straight defeat. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 137-136 to the Mavericks. Despite their loss, the Pelicans saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays.
Trey Murphy III went 13 for 17 en route to 32 points plus six rebounds. Murphy III is now averaging 21.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. See which team to back here.

Trade Rumors: Butler, Pelicans, Fox, Spurs, Yabusele, Wolves, Bogdanovic
Addressing a Friday report that stated the Pelicans have contacted Miami about Jimmy Butler, John Gambadoro of Arizona 98.7 tweets that New Orleans has “no interest” in trading for the Heat forward.
Butler doesn’t want to go to New Orleans and the Pelicans would be hard-pressed to add him in a swap involving Brandon Ingram without increasing their team salary, which they don’t want to do, Gambadoro notes (via Twitter), adding that he believes the Heat or Butler’s agent are using the Pelicans for leverage.
For what it’s worth, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line – who initially co-reported the Pelicans/Heat discussions along with Marc Stein – said in a Bleacher Report stream on Friday (video link) that while the two teams have talked, he doesn’t think Butler ending up in New Orleans “sounds likely at all.”
Here are a few more trade rumors from around the NBA:
- Despite some chatter from local media in San Antonio about the Spurs potentially gaining momentum toward a De’Aaron Fox trade, Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee (Twitter link) hears from a source with knowledge of the situation that “all is quiet as of now” and that no deal involving the Kings star appears imminent. If the Spurs do make a deal for Fox, it’s unlikely to include Stephon Castle, according to plugged-in Sacramento reporter Damien Barling of ESPN 1320 (Twitter link), who says indications are that San Antonio won’t be willing to give up the rookie guard.
- In another story for The Stein Line (Substack link), Fischer adds the Timberwolves to the list of teams that have inquired on Sixers big man Guerschon Yabusele. Philadelphia has received offers that include multiple second-round picks for Yabusele, according to Fischer.
- After Stein reported on Thursday that the Hawks are actively exploring potential Bogdan Bogdanovic trades, Fischer follows up (Substack link) by citing momentum toward a deal, with confidence rising in Atlanta that a deal will get down. However, both Stein and Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports (Twitter link) dispute that a deal with the Suns involving Jusuf Nurkic is among the options currently under consideration.
With the NBA trade deadline quickly approaching, there are plenty of rumors swirling around some big names in the league. Here are the latest trade rumors involving Jimmy Butler, the New Orleans Pelicans, De’Aaron Fox, the San Antonio Spurs, Guerschon Yabusele, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Bogdan Bogdanovic.1. Jimmy Butler: There have been reports that the Miami Heat are interested in acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Philadelphia 76ers. The Heat are looking to add another star player to their roster and Butler could be the perfect fit.
2. New Orleans Pelicans: The Pelicans are reportedly open to trading some of their key players, including Jrue Holiday and JJ Redick. With the team struggling this season, they may be looking to shake up their roster and acquire some assets for the future.
3. De’Aaron Fox: The Sacramento Kings have received inquiries about point guard De’Aaron Fox, but it is unlikely that they will trade him. Fox is a key piece of their young core and the Kings are committed to building around him.
4. San Antonio Spurs: The Spurs are open to trading some of their veterans, including LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan. Both players have been mentioned in trade rumors, but it remains to be seen if the Spurs will pull the trigger on any deals.
5. Guerschon Yabusele: The Boston Celtics are reportedly looking to trade Guerschon Yabusele to clear up some cap space. Yabusele has struggled to find consistent playing time with the Celtics and a change of scenery could benefit both parties.
6. Minnesota Timberwolves: The Timberwolves are exploring trade options for Robert Covington and Jeff Teague. Both players have drawn interest from other teams and the Timberwolves could look to make a move before the deadline.
7. Bogdan Bogdanovic: The Sacramento Kings are fielding offers for Bogdan Bogdanovic, who is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. Several teams are reportedly interested in acquiring the sharpshooting guard, who could provide a boost to a contender’s bench.
As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see which of these rumors come to fruition and how they will impact the league’s landscape. Stay tuned for more updates on potential trades in the NBA.

#Trade #Rumors #Butler #Pelicans #Fox #Spurs #Yabusele #Wolves #BogdanovicNBA trade rumors: Pelicans interested in Jimmy Butler-Brandon Ingram swap; Marcus Smart on the move again?
A new development on the Jimmy Butler front: The New Orleans Pelicans approached the Miami Heat this week about a potential trade involving Butler and forward Brandon Ingram, The Stein Line’s Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported Friday.
Ingram, 27, is on a $36 million expiring contract. He became eligible for a contract extension worth up to $208 million over four years last summer, but the Pelicans have not been willing to max him out, nor have they been able to find him a suitable trade. Initially, according to The Stein Line, other teams proposed frameworks for Butler deals that also involved Ingram. Then New Orleans decided to reach out to Miami directly about a Butler-Ingram swap.
For the Heat, who would like to move on from the Butler era, make the playoffs this season and not take on money past 2025-26, a trade built around Butler and Ingram would make a lot of sense. Ingram has been out since Dec. 7 with a high-grade ankle sprain, but, assuming he can get back on the court for the stretch run, he’d give them another talented creator. If he fits well, they’d have the option of re-signing him with Bird rights in the offseason. They could also sign-and-trade him at that point.
A Jimmy Butler-free trade deadline preview: Six questions about the other storylines ahead of Feb. 6
James Herbert
For the Pelicans, the motivation here is less clear. They need to shed $1.4 million to get under the luxury tax, and, given that they never pay the tax and have a 12-36 record, they’re not going to add to their payroll between now and the Feb. 6 deadline. Butler is making $48.8 million this season, so, presumably, New Orleans would be giving up more than just Ingram. Could CJ McCollum ($33.3 million this season, $30.7 million next) be moved to Miami (or elsewhere)? Does the front office envision Butler helping a healthier version of the team make a playoff run next season, or is this just a creative way to create financial flexibility?
The new CBA means that almost any trade involving Butler and Ingram would have to be complex and involve at least one other team. The Heat are close to the second apron, and, if they aggregate multiple contracts, they can’t finish the trade above it. As they are over the first apron, they cannot take back more salary than they receive.
According to The Stein Line, the Pelicans have also had recent discussions about Ingram with the Toronto Raptors and that “preliminary conversations” with the Atlanta Hawks have “not gained significant traction.”
Does Fox want out or did Sacramento decide to shop him? Yes
Let’s talk about semantics! When ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news that De’Aaron Fox of the Sacramento Kings was on the block, he did not report that Fox had demanded (or politely requested) a trade. He did, however, report that Fox had a “target destination in mind ahead of 2026 free agency.”
So does Fox want out? Well, The Stein Line reported Thursday that the Kings recently approached Fox about trading him before the deadline, not the other way around. They reportedly told some teams that they were open to discussing Fox last week.
Rich Paul wants De’Aaron Fox rumors out now and timing shows how players have lost leverage with NBA’s new CBA
Bill Reiter
But they didn’t do those things in a vacuum. In the same story, The Stein Line reported that, regardless of how this season played out, Fox had “no intention of extending in Sacramento.” Is communicating this to the Kings the same as publicly demanding to be traded immediately? No, and definitely not in this case — according to The Stein Line, Fox would actually prefer to leave Sacramento this coming offseason — but it’s not all that different from a private trade request. If the team knows you don’t want to stay, you don’t have to ask for a trade.
To be clear, I’m not saying Fox has wronged the Kings or vice versa. He has the right to leave in free agency, and, if that’s the plan, then being upfront about it helps Sacramento, as it has an opportunity to get something back in return. The Kings, meanwhile, have the right to take the best offer they can get, and to do the deal when it makes the most sense for them, not him.
As a reminder: Donovan Mitchell never officially asked the Utah Jazz for a trade.
Has Bogdanovic played his last game for Atlanta?
On Monday, Bogdan Bogdanovic was on the Hawks’ active roster for their game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He didn’t log a single minute, though, and officially got a DNP-CD. He was then listed as out due to personal reasons for their games against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday. Bogdanovic is expected to miss Saturday’s game against the Indiana Pacers, too.
On Thursday, four separate outlets — HoopsHype, The Arizona Republic, SNY and The Stein Line — either directly reported or implied that Bogdanovic is likely to be traded before the deadline. The Phoenix Suns have reportedly talked to Atlanta about swapping Jusuf Nurkic for Bogdanovic (and presumably incentivizing the Hawks with draft capital). Miami has also “expressed interest” in him, per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
Bogdanovic is 32 years old and is making $17.3 million this season. That would be a big-time bargain if he were playing at the level he did last season, but he has shot 37.1% from the field and 30.1% from deep in 24 games this season after missing the first few weeks with a hamstring injury. He’s also owed $16 million next season, and he has a team option worth $16 million in 2026-27.
If Bogdanovic’s down year is strictly health-related, not evidence of decline, then, whether it’s the Suns or another win-now team, this could be a great opportunity to buy low. If Bogdanovic can get healthy relatively quickly, that is.
What’s the Pacers’ plan?
Tyrese Haliburton’s five-year extension kicked in this season, and Indiana’s newly named All-Star reserve, Pascal Siakam, is in Year 1 of a four-year deal. Both contracts started at $42.2 million, or 30% of the salary cap. As thrilled as the Pacers must be to have both stars on the roster — after a slow start, they’ve won 16 of their last 21 games — they knew when they traded for Siakam that, with that kind of money on the books, they’d have to make hard decisions about the rest of the roster.
One decision: How much can they afford to offer Myles Turner in free agency? The big man, who turns 29 in March, is on a $19.9 million expiring contract. That is an artificially low number; two years ago, Indiana used cap space to renegotiate and extend his contract, so he got a $17.1 million raise as soon as he signed it and the team has paid Turner a below-market-value salary in the two seasons since. The Pacers do not have that option now, and, if they simply add a new contract for Turner to the 10 salaries they already have on next year’s books, they will be in the luxury tax. (Turner will be looking for a starting salary of more than $30 million, per The Athletic’s Jovan Buha.)
Another decision: How much can they afford to offer Bennedict Mathurin when he’s up for an extension this summer? The 22-year-old is a gifted scorer with considerable upside, but you can’t pay everybody. Indiana has already signed wing Aaron Nesmith through the 2026-27 season, and it has signed guard Aaron Nembhard through the 2027-28 season. Ben Sheppard will be up for an extension the year after Mathurin, too.
The Pacers don’t exactly have to make those right decisions right now, but they need to at least have an idea of where they stand, as it will inform how they approach this trade deadline. The rest of the league knows the position Indiana is in, so other teams have been reportedly monitoring both Turner and Mathurin.
On Friday, The Athletic’s Fred Katz reported that the Pacers are “not trying to get worse,” so they are unlikely to trade Turner. They have also reportedly rejected other teams’ overtures about Nembhard, who has been instrumental to their turnaround. And while the franchise has not paid the luxury tax in two decades, that streak could potentially end next season, depending on how the rest of this one goes.
According to The Athletic, Indiana’s conversations about Obi Toppin (who re-signed with the team last summer on a four-year, $58 million deal) haven’t really gone anywhere. Mathurin is not mentioned in the story.
Smart move?
Could Marcus Smart’s tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies end before he even plays his 40th game for the team? According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, there has been “plenty of discussion” about this possibility recently.
The 30-year-old guard joined the Grizzlies in the same June 2023 deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics. To acquire Smart, Memphis gave up Tyus Jones, the 2023 first-round pick that became Marcus Sasser and the 2024 first-round pick that became Bub Carrington. Smart has dealt with a series of injuries since then, though, and appeared in only 20 games in 2023-24.
This season, Smart has appeared in 18 games, and he has been sidelined since he suffered a finger injury (a “partial tear of the proximal extensor hood of his right index finger,” per the team) on Dec. 21. While practicing with the the Grizzlies’ G League team, the Memphis Hustle, on Jan. 9, Smart fractured his left thumb, which required surgery. On Wednesday, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins told reporters that Smart was still “week-to-week” and limited to individual work, per Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
These hand injuries are strange, and, if Memphis doesn’t end up trading Smart, the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year could still play a significant role as it battles for playoff positioning. As ESPN pointed out, though, the Grizzlies have to think about the money they’re likely to spend this offseason when Santi Aldama will be a restricted free agent and Jaren Jackson Jr. could be eligible for a supermax extension (if he makes an All-NBA team). Given how backup point guard Scotty Pippen Jr. has emerged this season and how well rookie Jaylen Wells has fared with the starting five, it is understandable that Memphis — perhaps the league’s deepest team — might want to shed Smart’s $21.6 million 2025-26 salary.
The NBA trade rumors are heating up once again, with the New Orleans Pelicans reportedly interested in a potential swap involving Jimmy Butler and Brandon Ingram. Butler, who currently plays for the Miami Heat, has been a target for the Pelicans as they look to bolster their roster for a playoff push.Ingram, on the other hand, has been a key player for the Pelicans since being acquired in the Anthony Davis trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. The 24-year-old forward is averaging 23.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game this season.
Meanwhile, there are also rumors swirling around Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart, who could be on the move once again. Smart has been a valuable defensive player for the Celtics, but with the team looking to make changes, he could be a potential trade piece.
It remains to be seen if these rumored trades will come to fruition, but it’s clear that teams are looking to shake things up as the NBA trade deadline approaches. Stay tuned for more updates on these and other potential deals.

Celtics vs Pelicans Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game
The Boston Celtics are ready to put a shaky January behind them as they end the month against the New Orleans Pelicans to set a better tone for the remainder of the season. With Jaylen Brown being the point of focus in his recent resurgence, count on him to help them get their edge back.
Photo By – Imagn Images. Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown (7) celebrates during the second half.
Whether it’s boredom or fatigue or just a dip in form, the Boston Celtics have lost a little of their edge, but they can finish an erratic January on a high note tonight against Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans.
Though Boston is 5-4 in its last nine games, my Celtics vs. Pelicans predictions expect the visitors to show up here, led by two of their key difference-makers.
My NBA picks cast an eye over the top betting angles for this January 31 battle.
Celtics vs Pelicans prediction
My best bet
Jaylen Brown Over 21.5 points (-115 at bet365)My analysis
Even after being named Eastern Conference Finals MVP and Finals MVP last season, Jaylen Brown can get a little lost in the shuffle when it comes to the NBA’s top-tier talent. But he’s been on a tear lately, and the Boston Celtics will be looking for a repeat performance tonight.Brown, named an All-Star reserve this week, arrives in New Orleans on the heels of back-to-back 28-point games this week, including 10-for-18 shooting against the Houston Rockets on Monday, and he’s gone past this 21.5 O/U number in four of his past five contests.
It’s all the more impressive given Brown’s slump from downtown. He’s shot 27% from 3-point range this month, but he’s making up for it with his work in the paint. His free-throws are up from December as well, and he got to the line for 11 attempts in midweek against the Chicago Bulls.
He may not run into much resistance here. The New Orleans Pelicans’ defensive issues were glaring in a 137-136 loss to the Luka Doncic-less Dallas Mavericks this week, and Brown should be able to get whatever he wants on that end of the floor. This is the same New Orleans defense that also gave up 139 points to the Memphis Grizzlies last week.
Even with so many mouths to feed in this potent Boston offense, I expect Brown to have ample volume. He’s taken 18 or more shots in each of his last four games, while stepping up to paper over little slumps for Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday.
In what should be a high-scoring showdown, the Over on the Brown points prop has real value.
Celtics vs Pelicans same-game parlay
Kristaps Porzingis should be riding high after a monster effort against Chicago last time out. Though his 34-point explosion was flashy, his work on the glass was just as impressive on the way to 11 boards – and I’m targeting his rebounds prop for my SGP.
He’s had eight or more rebounds in seven of his past 11 games, and he ended up with 11 boards in his last outing against New Orleans. With Daniel Theis doubtful, the Pelicans’ frontcourt depth takes a hit, and Porzingis has a path to another double-digit tally.
Despite Boston’s talent edge, a 10.5-point line overlooks New Orleans’ gritty effort at TD Garden earlier this month in a 120-119 loss. With the quartet of Zion Williamson, Dejounte Murray, C.J. McCollum and Trey Murphy III, the hosts have enough firepower to keep this close.
The Celtics have a healthy 17-6 road record, but three of those losses have come in January – and they’re 4-6 ATS in their last 10 contests.

Celtics vs Pelicans Prediction, Odds and Picks
The Boston Celtics have recently regained their footing, but they are still working to establish consistency. Just last week, they hit one of their lowest points of the season with a brutal loss to the Lakers. However, they bounced back with an impressive win over Dallas, a narrow 2-point loss to Houston (in which head coach Joe Mazzulla admitted to mismanaging the final plays) and a dominant blowout against Chicago. While the momentum is trending upward, the question remain: can they string together quality wins as the all-star break approaches? Derrick White and Jaylen Brown, both emerging from career-worst shooting slumps, have started to find their rhythm. Brown has posted 28 points in back-to-back games and White has delivered 2 20+ point performances, himself. Kristaps Porzingis continues to look better each game, coming off a 34-point night with 8 made 3-pointers. Still, the Celtics have struggled with consistency following big wins; that makes for a risky bet versus a Pelicans team that — while struggling — has shown flashes of competitiveness.
New Orleans enters this matchup on a 4-game skid, sitting near the bottom of the league. While the numbers speak for themselves, the Pelicans did push the Celtics in their last meeting — losing by just 1 point. They controlled much of that game, making Boston’s 11-point spread a tough number to play. Given the Celtics’ 16-7 record to the under on the road, this game could favor a lower-scoring outcome — especially if Boston controls the pace.

The Boston Celtics are set to take on the New Orleans Pelicans in what promises to be an exciting matchup. Both teams are looking to secure a win and improve their standings in their respective conferences. The Celtics are coming off a strong performance against the Miami Heat and will be looking to carry that momentum into this game. With Jayson Tatum leading the charge, the Celtics have a strong offense that can put up points in a hurry. However, their defense has been a bit shaky at times, and they will need to tighten up on that end of the floor to secure a win.
On the other hand, the Pelicans have been struggling as of late, losing their last few games. However, with Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram leading the way, they have the firepower to compete with any team in the league. The Pelicans will need to step up their defense and limit the Celtics’ scoring opportunities if they want to come out on top in this game.
In terms of odds, the Celtics are currently favored to win this matchup. However, the Pelicans have shown that they can compete with top teams in the league and should not be counted out.
Our prediction for this game is a close one, with the Celtics ultimately coming out on top. However, the Pelicans will put up a strong fight and keep it competitive until the final buzzer.

Pelicans rookie Yves Missi selected for Rising Stars Game | Pelicans
New Orleans Pelicans general manager Bryson Graham saw something special in Yves Missi the moment he laid eyes on him back in October 2023 at Baylor.
So Graham told Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operation David Griffin that they should put him on their radar.
They did, drafting him with the No. 21 overall pick eight months later.
Now, Missi — who many thought would be a project — is on everyone’s radar.
He’s been one of the best players in the rookie class, which is why he earned a roster spot for the Rising Stars Game during next month’s NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco. The rosters were announced Tuesday.
It’s the sixth straight year the Pelicans have had at least one player in the Rising Stars Game, which consists of rookies and second-year players.
Of the 10 players selected for the rookie team this year, only Jaylen Wells of the Memphis Grizzlies was drafted after Missi.
Miissi is averaging 9 points, 8 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots for the Pelicans, who play the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at Smoothie King Center.
“He’s just scratching the surface of where we think he can end up,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said in January. “I try not to put a ceiling on these young guys when they come in.”
Missi has started 36 of 44 games, the most of any Pelicans player. He’s also recorded eight double-doubles.
His best game was a 23-point, 12-rebound effort against the Atlanta Hawks. He blocked five shots, a season-high, against the Los Angeles Clippers in late December.
Missi was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December. It was a month in which he faced some of the best big men in the league, including Nikola Jokic (Nuggets), Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Alperen Sengun (Rockets), Pascal Siakam (Pacers), Damontas Sabonis (Kings) and Victor Wembanyama (Spurs).
“It’s like a dream coming true, to be honest,” Missi said in January about facing that gauntlet of centers. “It’s always good just having to go coast to coast against them and see what I saw on TV when I was younger.”
NBA All-Star Weekend is set for Feb. 14-16. The Rising Stars Game will be played Feb. 14.
Schedule changes
The now have a make-up date for the game against the Milwaukee Bucks that was postponed last Wednesday because of snow in New Orleans.
The Pelicans now will host the Bucks at the Smoothie King Center on April 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Pelicans originally were scheduled to host the Orlando Magic that day, but that game has been rescheduled to March 13 at 7 p.m.
The Pelicans’ road game at the Milwaukee Bucks originally was scheduled for April 9 but has been moved to April 10.
Also, the Pelicans’ road game Feb. 5 against the Denver Nuggets now will start at 8 p.m. and will no longer be televised by ESPN. It’ll be shown locally on the Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network.
The New Orleans Pelicans’ rookie sensation Yves Missi has been selected to participate in the Rising Stars Game during NBA All-Star Weekend. The 21-year-old forward has been making waves in his first season in the league, showcasing his impressive skills and athleticism on the court.Missi, who was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has quickly established himself as a key player for the Pelicans, averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per game. His ability to score from all areas of the court, as well as his defensive prowess, has caught the attention of fans and analysts alike.
The Rising Stars Game, which features the top first and second-year players in the league, will give Missi the opportunity to showcase his talents on a bigger stage and compete against some of the best young talent in the NBA. Pelicans fans should be excited to see their promising rookie represent the team in this exciting event.
Congratulations to Yves Missi on this well-deserved honor, and we can’t wait to see him shine in the Rising Stars Game! #Pelicans #YvesMissi #NBAAllStar

A return to the Smoothie King Center wasn’t enough to get the New Orleans Pelicans back on the winning track.
Big games from Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy weren’t enough, either.
A night CJ McCollum entered the franchise record book wasn’t enough, either.
McCollum’s 3-pointer in the final seconds made him the Pels’ all-time leader from deep, but it was too little too late.
After a rough road trip, the Pelicans’ losing ways continued with a 137-136 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.
Williamson finished with 29 points, proving Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd right in what he said before the game started.
“That one guy can’t be guarded by one person,” Kidd said. “It’ll be a real test for our group.”
Williamson shot 11 of 17 from the floor and got help from Trey Murphy, who knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 32 points.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Pelicans (12-36), an about-face from where the team was last week when it won four straight for the first time this season. The Pelicans dropped to 1-2 this season against the Mavs (26-22).
Dallas handed New Orleans its worst loss of the season in November, a 41-point thumping at American Airlines Center. The Pelicans avenged that loss two weeks ago in a game that was sealed by a Murphy blocked shot in the final seconds.
This one also came down to the end. Dejounte Murray’s 3-pointer with 15.9 seconds left closed the gap to 136-133. Dallas’ Spencer Dinwiddie, who had his shot blocked by Murphy in the last game, split a pair of free throws. McCollum’s late trey was the final basket.
McCollum entered the record books, hitting a 3-pointer at the final buzzer to break the franchise record for 3-pointers made. It was the 627th 3-pointer since McCollum arrived in New Orleans three years ago. He passed Jrue Holiday, who made 626 in his seven seasons in New Orleans.
“CJ’s a professional on all levels of what a professional should look like,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said before the game. “Off the floor, he’s incredible. In the community, he’s incredible. With his teammates and with his staff on the floor, he’s very consistent with what he puts in from the time he walks in the building. … All the credit goes to him and all the work that he puts in.”
The Pelicans will try to end their skid Friday at home against the Boston Celtics.
The New Orleans Pelicans suffered a tough loss to the Dallas Mavericks, marking their fourth consecutive defeat. Despite a strong effort from star player Zion Williamson, the Pelicans were unable to overcome the Mavericks’ offense. The Pelicans struggled to contain Mavericks’ leading scorer Luka Doncic, who put up a dominant performance with 30 points. The Pelicans’ defense also faltered in the second half, allowing the Mavericks to pull ahead and secure the victory.
With this loss, the Pelicans’ playoff hopes are looking bleak as they continue to slide down the standings. The team will need to regroup and find a way to turn things around if they want to salvage the season.
Fans are hoping for a quick turnaround as the Pelicans look to bounce back from this disappointing loss and get back on track. Stay tuned for more updates on the Pelicans’ season as they strive to make a push for the playoffs.

#Pelicans #fall #Mavericks #fourth #straight #loss #PelicansWhy Pelicans need big strides in ‘mature’ Trey Murphy III’s ballhandling skills
Willie Green and the New Orleans Pelicans have no excuses for some recent losses. Collectively, fans can be forgiven for tuning out given the circumstances. The team cannot though and individual player development is the best place to look for silver linings amid an otherwise lost season. Rookie big man Yves Missi’s defense and breakout wingman Trey Murphy III‘s on-ball creation top those charts.
Missi is worth mentioning in this year’s NBA All-Rookie voting. Murphy III is laying the foundation and making a case for future NBA All-Star Game considerations. With the NBA Playoffs all but out of reach, Green spent some time talking with ClutchPoints about Murphy III’s maturity and much-improved ball-handling skills.
“It’s rewarding to see one of our younger players just continue to mature in his basketball career and the credit goes to Trey,” Green said. “(Murphy III) puts the work in. He is watching film, getting in the gym, and getting extra work in at night. Really good to see and he will be very, very, good as his career progresses.”
This evolution isn’t just about one aspect of Murphy III’s game and Green’s optimism moving forward is both undeniable and understandable. The 24-year-old averaging 21.2 points is equipped with a handful of lethal offensive options. However, crafty ballhandling is a crucial building block, a stepping stone to an NBA All-Star level skillset.
“I think it is something that (Trey Murphy III) is adding to what he can do. He came in as a shooter and added being able to get to the basket at an elite level,” Green noted. “He is getting to the free-throw line, rebounding is going up. We are starting to see Trey handle the ball a bit more in our offensive possessions and attack guys off the dribble. As long as he continues to work on it and do it with confidence like he has been doing, the sky is really the limit for him.”

Scott Kinser-Imagn Images The sharpshooter has now evolved into a multi-dimensional player on the court. Now the Pelicans need to see just how much Trey Murphy III can handle before next season. The synergy between a stable lineup and individual development is pivotal for a young team like the Pelicans. Willie Green, having been denied that luxury since taking the job, admitted that would be easier with a fully healthy roster.
“It’s really more about having healthy guys and then having consistency with that group,” Green explained. “That is what we are starting to see now. We’ve had very similar lineups and very similar lineup changes in terms of going to the second unit. Guys know this is when I’m going to play, this is when I’ll come out. We’re hoping to have more consistency with (the rotations).”
The Pelicans want to save money in any NBA Trade Deadline deal. However, Willie Green and the front office should be on the same page when it comes to spending time letting Trey Murphy III run the offense. Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, and Zion Williamson are known commodities. Let the 6-foot-9 wingman work out some issues when the stakes are lowest. There is not much to lose at this point of the season. Getting a better handle on next season’s needs is more important, especially with Murphy III inked to a new multi-year deal. It seems he can handle the responsibilities.
Pelicans fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming NBA season, and one player they have their eyes on is Trey Murphy III. The young forward showed great promise in his rookie year, but there is one area of his game that needs significant improvement – his ballhandling skills.Murphy, known for his sharpshooting and defensive prowess, has the potential to be a versatile player for the Pelicans. However, in order to reach his full potential, he must become more comfortable handling the ball and creating his own shot.
Improving his ballhandling skills will not only make Murphy a more well-rounded player, but it will also make him a more valuable asset to the Pelicans. With the departure of Lonzo Ball and the uncertainty surrounding Zion Williamson’s future, the team will need players who can create their own shot and take pressure off of their star players.
If Murphy can make big strides in his ballhandling skills this offseason, he could become a key contributor for the Pelicans and help them make a push for the playoffs. Fans are hopeful that the young forward will put in the work and come back next season ready to take his game to the next level.
