Mavericks hold off pesky Pelicans, 137-136
NEW ORLEANS – After months of hearing about “next man up,” the Mavericks are now living proof that the concept works.
Especially for Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington, who were already strong players but have leveled up with so many injuries opening up opportunities for them.
Both players came through with big games and clutch fourth quarters as the Mavericks were able to grind out a 137-136 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans Wednesday night at Smoothie King Center, starting the longest trip of the season with a well-rounded performance.
A city bracing for the hysteria that comes with next week’s Super Bowl extravaganza hasn’t exactly fallen in love with these Pelicans. The crowd was small and cozy. But it didn’t show with the teams, who put on an entertaining show.
The Mavericks avenged the 119-116 loss the Pelicans handed them two weeks ago. They are now 2-1 this season against New Orleans with a final meeting on Feb. 21, the first game after the All-Star break.
The Mavericks were down 101-100 early in the fourth quarter, but then started scoring in threes. Klay Thompson and P.J. Washington both dropped in two three-pointers and Daniel Gafford had a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays as the Mavericks went on a 20-10 tear to open up a 120-111 advantage.
When the Pelicans got within 122-118, Washington drilled another triple with 2:48 to go to send the Mavericks on their way. At least until Dejounte Murray’s three-pointer with 15 seconds got the Mavericks’ attention and the Pelicans within 136-133. But Spencer Dinwiddie canned the second of two free throws with 11.4 to go to make it a two-score game. A three-pointer by C.J. McCollum with 0.2 seconds left did not matter as the Mavericks improved to 26-22. The Pelicans did not play like a team that fell to 12-36.
Washington, who has been a rebounding demon for the last two weeks, had 25 points and 14 rebounds. He didn’t miss a triple-double by much as he also had eight assists.
Gafford had 22 points and 12 rebounds as he continued to pick up the slack left by Dereck Lively II’s ankle injury.
Kyrie Irving wasn’t bad either with 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
The Mavericks couldn’t shake the Pelicans through the first half when neither team led by more than seven points and the Mavericks actually trailed at the break 63-57 when they gave up the final six points, including a couple of dunks by Trey Murphy that brought a little life to a crowd that could only be described as tiny at cavernous Smoothie King Center.
Good sections were available in the upper deck.
With the Super Bowl coming on Feb. 9 to the Superdome next door, many streets are closed off around the Pelicans’ arena, making it a challenge for fans logistically.
The ones that stayed away missed an entertaining night that featured strong play from Zion Williamson and a big night from P.J. Washington, who was a point and a rebound away from a double-double in the first half, which he collected quickly when the third quarter started.
The Mavericks knew they had let the first half get away from them and came out in the third quarter with a better aggression. But that push came to a halt midway into the period when the Mavericks couldn’t score. The Pelicans pulled ahead 86-79 with a 13-3 surge.
And they still were up 101-100 with 10:28 to go after a Jose Alvarado three-pointer that juiced up the crowd.
But the Mavericks were loading up a big finish.

The Dallas Mavericks managed to narrowly defeat the New Orleans Pelicans in a nail-biting 137-136 victory. Despite a valiant effort from the Pelicans, the Mavericks were able to hold them off and secure the win.Luka Dončić led the way for the Mavericks with an impressive performance, finishing the game with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 15 assists. Kristaps Porzingis also had a strong showing, contributing 25 points and 8 rebounds.
The Pelicans put up a tough fight, with Zion Williamson leading the charge with 35 points and 14 rebounds. Brandon Ingram also had a standout performance, scoring 30 points and dishing out 7 assists.
In the end, it was the Mavericks’ clutch plays down the stretch that made the difference, securing them the narrow victory. With this win, the Mavericks continue to solidify their playoff position in the competitive Western Conference.
Fans can expect more exciting matchups between these two teams in the future, as both the Mavericks and Pelicans showcase their talent and determination on the court.

Mavericks vs Pelicans Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game
Our NBA picks expect a road win for the Mavericks and a big game from Kyrie Irving.

The New Orleans Pelicans will hope that a return home will be enough to snap a three-game losing streak as they host the Dallas Mavericks at the Smoothie King Center on Wednesday night.
Dallas has proven it can beat even some of the league’s top teams despite losing superstar Luca Doncic, and I’m predicting another win for it in my Mavericks vs. Pelicans predictions.
Learn why I like the Mavs tonight and see my full analysis in my free NBA picks for Wednesday, January 29 below.
Mavericks vs Pelicans prediction
My best bet
Mavericks moneyline (-110 at bet365)My analysis
The Dallas Mavericks haven’t lived up to their expectations this season, and that includes the recent run in which they’ve lost six of their last nine games. Obviously, much of the decline in Dallas’ fortunes has been tied to the loss of Luka Doncic (28.1 ppg), who strained his left calf on Christmas and hasn’t played since. The Mavericks are just 6-11 in their 17 games since that injury, but there have been signs that this team can compete at a high level even without Doncic. In the past two weeks, Dallas beat the Thunder twice, dealing a stunning blow to the team with the best record in the NBA.
Kyrie Irving (24.1 ppg) is now the focal point of the offense, but Dallas has a total of seven players who are scoring in double figures, and players like Daniel Gafford (12.4 ppg) and Spencer Dinwiddie (10.3 ppg) have been among those to step up when needed to score points.
The New Orleans Pelicans briefly looked like they were turning their season around when they won five of six games between Jan. 10 and Jan. 20. Since then, however, the Pelicans have lost three games, failing to cover in any of those contests.
The Pelicans have benefitted from having a healthy Zion Williamson in the lineup for the last two games, an increasingly rare situation for New Orleans, but even as Williamson scored 28 and 31 points on Saturday and Monday, respectively, it didn’t spark a turnaround for the Pelicans offense, which averaged only 98 points in those two games.
Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to struggle on defense, which has been a problem for the team all season long. The Pelicans rank 28th in defensive rating (117.5) and are dead last in defensive rebounding percentage. New Orleans is allowing opponents to score 117.7 ppg on the year and has allowed 10 straight opponents to score 110+ points.
With Doncic pacing the Dallas offense, that’s a total the Mavericks should easily surpass against a hapless Pelicans defense. I can’t see New Orleans keeping up with the Mavs in a shootout, so I’m taking Dallas to win outright on the road.
Mavericks vs Pelicans same-game parlay
Even with Doncic out of the lineup tonight, both teams have plenty of scoring potential in this matchup. Dallas has hit the Over in four straight games, while New Orleans has gone Over the total in six of its last nine games overall. With both teams having been playing to totals of 135+ in many of their recent games, I like the Over here.
Taking a scorer here makes sense, as it correlates well with our expectations for a high-scoring game. I’m going with Kyrie Irving, who’s taken on an even bigger role in the Dallas offense with Doncic’s injury. Irving is scoring 24.1 ppg on the year, and we can expect him to outpace that total against a poor New Orleans defense. I think the safest play is on Irving to score 25+ points tonight.

In tonight’s NBA matchup, the Dallas Mavericks will face off against the New Orleans Pelicans. Both teams are coming off of strong performances in their last games, with the Mavericks defeating the Thunder and the Pelicans taking down the Kings. The Mavericks are currently sitting in the 7th spot in the Western Conference, while the Pelicans are in the 11th spot. Both teams will be looking to secure a win tonight to improve their playoff positioning.
In terms of predictions, the Mavericks are favored to win this game with odds of -150. The Pelicans, on the other hand, have odds of +130. This game is expected to be a close one, with both teams having talented rosters and strong offensive capabilities.
As for picks, I believe the Mavericks will come out on top in this matchup. They have been playing well as of late and have a solid team led by Luka Doncic. The Pelicans have been inconsistent this season and may struggle to keep up with the Mavericks’ scoring.
Overall, I predict the Mavericks will win this game by a narrow margin. It should be an exciting matchup between two talented teams vying for a crucial win in the playoff race.

The Mavericks came into the matchup with some extra motivation after the defeat they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

What to Know
The Pelicans will be in front of their home fans on Wednesday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-court advantage. They will challenge the Dallas Mavericks at 8:00 p.m. ET at Smoothie King Center. The Pelicans are limping into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
The experts predicted the Pelicans would be headed in after a victory, but the Raptors made sure that didn’t happen. The Pelicans fell 113-104 to the Raptors on Monday.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Zion Williamson, who went 13 for 18 en route to 31 points plus seven rebounds and three blocks. He is trending in the right direction considering he’s improved his point production for four straight games.
The Pelicans struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only six offensive rebounds. They are 1-5 when they can’t control their own glass like that.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks posted their biggest win since December 23, 2024 on Monday. Everything went their way against the Wizards as the Mavericks made off with a 130-108 victory. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 73-43.
The Mavericks got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Daniel Gafford out in front who went 8 for 13 en route to 18 points plus eight rebounds and five blocks.
New Orleans’ defeat dropped their record down to 12-35. As for Dallas, their victory bumped their record up to 25-22.
While only the Pelicans took care of their fans the last time they played, neither team managed to cover. Looking ahead, the Mavericks are the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 1.5 points. This contest might not be the best time to bet New Orleans against the spread since they’ve let bettors down the last four times they’ve played.
The Pelicans came out on top in a nail-biter against the Mavericks when the teams last played two weeks ago, sneaking past 119-116. Will the Pelicans repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.
Odds
Dallas is a slight 1.5-point favorite against New Orleans, according to the latest NBA odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Mavericks as a 2.5-point favorite.
The over/under is 232.5 points.

GettyJalen Duren goes up for a rebound against Pacers’ center Myles Turner.
Wednesday night’s basketball action features 11 enthralling matchups and plenty of NBA player props to bet on, including players on the Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks.
So, why are we targeting Jalen Duren and Daniel Gafford out of all of the players available on this massive slate?
Keep reading below for a breakdown of our DFS picks of the day!
NBA Player Props for January 29
Jalen Duren To Record Double-Double (-145) – DraftKings
Duren has historically performed at a high level against the Pacers, averaging 13.4 points and 12.4 rebounds per game over his past nine outings.
In that stretch, Duren has recorded a double-double in every game, giving this a hit rate of 100% over a nine-game stretch, which is much higher than the implied probability of his odds (59.18%).
And there is nothing to suggest that Duren won’t record at least 10 points and 10 rebounds once again.
In fact, Duren logged 17 points and 17 rebounds against the Pacers in their sole matchup two weeks ago.
As for recent trends, Duren has logged double-doubles in five of his past six games overall.
This matchup is beneficial for Duren for several reasons.
First, the Pacers are one of the fastest teams in the NBA, ranking sixth in pace thus far in the 2024-25 season.
What that means for Duren is that he can use his straight-line speed to get end-to-end quickly, giving him more opportunities to score.
He will also get more opportunities due to the fact that there are more possessions in games that feature the fast-paced Pacers.
Additionally, Myles Turner, the Pacers’ center, is more of a finesse big man, relying on his athleticism to defend shots and grab rebounds.
On the other hand, Duren perfectly blends his athletic ability with exceptional strength, which can be used to move Turner around in the paint, giving him a better opportunity for rebounds and putbacks.
Daniel Gafford Over 2.5 Blocks (-107) – BetRivers
With Dereck Lively II sidelined for at least the next month, Daniel Gafford has seen a substantial uptick in his minutes per game for the Dallas Mavericks.
In his past five games, Gafford has averaged 3.8 blocks per game in just under 30 minutes per game; he has hit the over on this line in four of his past five games.
Gafford’s biggest issue since getting extended minutes has been getting in foul trouble, but he has managed to record only six fouls in his past two games, so he is making progress in that department.
This is also an advantageous matchup for Gafford, as the Pelicans shoot the sixth-most 2-point field goals in the NBA, meaning he will have more opportunities to block shots since he is an interior defender and rim protector.
NBA Player Props: One Last Thought
Tim Hardaway Jr had a monstrous game against the Pacers the last time these two teams (Detroit and Indiana) faced off, pouring in 25 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field.
The current line on his points prop hovers around 11.5 points, which is solid value despite the fact he has only hit the over on it in two of his past five games.
Some players perform better against certain teams. And, in this case, Hardaway has performed well against the Pacers, regardless of what team he is playing for at the time.
Hardaway has scored 12 or more points in 16 of his past 19 games against Indiana and has seen plenty of minutes for the Pistons recently, eclipsing 30 minutes per game in eight consecutive games.
Give Hardaway’s NBA player props a look on Wednesday night.

After an impressive performance in the last game, Daniel Gafford is set to have a big day against the New Orleans Pelicans. With his athleticism and shot-blocking ability, Gafford has become a key player for the Washington Wizards. In the last game, Gafford recorded a double-double and made several crucial defensive plays. His presence in the paint has been a game-changer for the Wizards, and he is expected to have a significant impact against the Pelicans.
Gafford’s ability to finish around the rim and protect the basket will be crucial against the Pelicans’ talented frontcourt. With his high-flying dunks and energy on both ends of the floor, Gafford is poised to have a standout performance in this upcoming game.
Fans can expect to see Gafford making big plays and dominating the paint against the Pelicans. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be an exciting game for this rising star. #Gafford #Wizards #Pelicans #NBA

The New Orleans Pelicans and Charlotte Hornets battle Saturday evening at the Spectrum Center. Both teams lost on Friday night and look to return to the win column. New Orleans lost to Memphis, breaking their four-game winning streak. Now, they face the struggling Hornets, who are near the bottom of the Eastern Conference Standings.
The Pelicans have defeated the Hornets four straight times since the 2022 season. New Orleans played Friday night without Zion Williamson, who was recovering from a non-COVID-related illness. The former No. 1 overall pick has not played since January 17th against the Utah Jazz. Both teams released their injury report for Saturday night’s game.

Williamson is not listed on the report, meaning he will play against the Hornets. Brandon Ingram (ankle) and Herb Jones (shoulder) are listed out against Charlotte. Keion Brooks, Jr. is also out after being on a G League assignment.

Meanwhile, Trey Mann (disc), Cody Martin (core), Brandon Miller (wrist), and Grant Williams (knee) are out.

Grizzlies vs. Pelicans odds, score prediction, time: 2025 NBA picks, January 24 best bets from proven model
We’ve got another exciting Western Conference contest on Friday’s NBA schedule as the Memphis Grizzlies will host the New Orleans Pelicans. Memphis is 29-15 overall and 17-5 at home, while New Orleans is 12-32 overall and 4-16 on the road. The Grizzlies have won each of their first two matchups this season, most recently defeating New Orleans, 132-124, on the road on Dec. 27.
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn. The Grizzlies are favored by 11 points in the latest Grizzlies vs. Pelicans odds, according to the SportsLine consensus. The over/under is 243.5 points. Before entering any Pelicans vs. Grizzlies picks, you’ll want to see the NBA predictions from the model at SportsLine.
The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every NBA game 10,000 times and has returned well over $10,000 in betting profit for $100 players on its top-rated NBA picks over the past six-plus seasons. The model enters Week 14 of the 2024-25 NBA season on a sizzling 136-99 roll on all top-rated NBA picks dating back to last season, returning well over $3,000. Anyone following at sportsbooks and on betting apps could have seen huge returns.
The model has set its sights on Memphis vs. New Orleans. You can head to SportsLine to see its picks. Here are several NBA betting lines for Pelicans vs. Grizzlies:
- Grizzlies vs. Pelicans spread: Grizzlies -11
- Grizzlies vs. Pelicans over/under: 243.5 points
- Grizzlies vs. Pelicans money line: Grizzlies: -585, Pelicans: +429
- NO: The Pelicans are 5-1 against the spread (ATS) over their last six games
- MEM: The Grizzlies are 5-1 ATS over their last six games

Why the Pelicans can cover
You may not have guessed it, but the Pelicans are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. New Orleans enters Friday on a four-game winning streak, with only the Bucks (five games) on a longer active winning streak. The Pelicans also enter with additional rest after their Wednesday matchup against the Bucks was postponed due to snow. The rest should be welcomed coming off an overtime victory where New Orleans defeated the Jazz, 123-119, on Monday.
Zion Williamson (reconditioning) is out for Friday but the Pelicans have won two of their four games during this winning streak without Williamson. CJ McCollum had a huge performance with 45 points, eight rebounds and four assists on Monday with Williamson out. McCollum is averaging 22.4 points per game this season. Dejounte Murray had 26 and 30 points in the winning streak in games Williamson missed, so New Orleans can still score even without Williamson and could keep pace with Memphis to cover the large spread on Friday. See which team to pick here.
Why the Grizzlies can cover
The Grizzlies also enter on a four-game winning streak, most recently defeating the Hornets, 132-120, on Wednesday. Desmond Bane had 24 points in the win as he’s scored at least 21 points in 10 of his last 11 games to raise his average to 17.7 ppg this season. The fifth-year guard averaged a career-high 23.7 ppg last season with Ja Morant missing nearly the entire season and the Grizzlies could be without Morant again on Friday. The two-time All-Star missed Friday’s shootaround with an illness and is questionable, so that’s an injury to monitor.
Morant had 16 points and 13 assists against the Hornets on Wednesday, and he’s played in three of the Grizzlies’ four games during their current winning streak. The Grizzlies have become more than just Morant though as they’ve had four different leading scorers over the last four games. Jaren Jackson Jr. is the team’s top scorer at 22.6 ppg and Santi Aldama (questionable, illness) is adding 12.7 ppg. The Grizzlies have the No. 1 scoring offense in the league at 123.3 ppg and the Pelicans are 25th in scoring defense (117.2 ppg), so it may be a challenge for New Orleans to contain the Grizzlies. See which team to pick here.
How to make Pelicans vs. Grizzlies picks
The model has simulated Grizzlies vs. Pelicans 10,000 times and the results are in. We can tell you that the model is leaning Under, and it’s also generated a point-spread pick that is hitting almost 60% of simulations. You can only see the pick at SportsLine.
So who wins Pelicans vs. Grizzlies, and which side of the spread hits almost 60% of the time? Visit SportsLine now to see which side of the Grizzlies vs. Pelicans spread you need to jump on, all from the model that is on a 136-99 roll on top-rated NBA picks since last season, and find out.
The highly anticipated matchup between the Memphis Grizzlies and the New Orleans Pelicans is set to take place on January 24, 2025. As both teams gear up to face off on the court, fans and bettors alike are eager to see how the game will unfold. The Grizzlies, led by their young and talented roster, will be looking to secure a win against the Pelicans. With players like Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. leading the charge, Memphis is sure to put up a strong fight.
On the other hand, the Pelicans, with their star player Zion Williamson and rising talent in Brandon Ingram, will be aiming to come out on top in this matchup. New Orleans will be looking to make a statement and secure a win against their division rival.
As for the odds and score prediction for this game, it’s sure to be a close matchup. Both teams have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season, making it difficult to predict the outcome. However, based on the latest NBA picks and analysis from proven models, the Grizzlies may have a slight edge in this game.
For bettors looking to make the most out of this matchup, the best bets for this game may include taking the Grizzlies to cover the spread or betting on the total points to go over. With both teams possessing high-scoring offenses, this game has the potential to be a high-scoring affair.
Overall, the Grizzlies vs. Pelicans game on January 24 is shaping up to be an exciting matchup with plenty of betting opportunities. Stay tuned for the latest updates and analysis as game day approaches.

Riding a four-game win streak, the Memphis Grizzlies head into a matchup on Friday against the New Orleans Pelicans, who have also won four straight. Even with their active win streak, the Pelicans are just 12-32 on the season, mainly due to getting hit with a massive injury bug.
Pelicans star forward Zion Williamson has played just 10 games this season, averaging 21.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.4 assists. The two-time All-Star has shown the potential to be one of the most dominant players in the league, but numerous injuries throughout his short career have limited him completely.
Williamson was drafted first overall in 2019, letting star point guard Ja Morant fall to second for the Grizzlies to select.

Mandatory Credit: Petre Thomas-Imagn Images / Petre Thomas-Imagn Images Williamson and Morant have not faced off in over a year, as the top two picks from a talented 2019 draft class have played each other just eight times in their six-year careers.
Unfortunately for fans who patiently wait to see these two electric stars go at it, Friday’s matchup will not be the reunion that many hoped for. The Pelicans have ruled Williamson out of Friday’s game in Memphis.
“Forward Zion Williamson will be listed out for the contest due to return to play reconditioning from illness,” the Pelicans announced.

The Pelicans are slightly better when Williamson is on the court, as they are 4-6 when he plays compared to 8-26 when he does not. With the star forward sidelined, the Grizzlies should have a much easier time getting the job done at home on Friday.
NBA Fans React to Yuki Kawamura’s Performance vs. Trail Blazers
The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that star player Zion Williamson will be out for the upcoming game against the Memphis Grizzlies due to a lingering foot injury. Williamson, who has been dealing with discomfort in his foot for several weeks, will undergo further evaluation and treatment to ensure his full recovery. This news comes as a blow to the Pelicans, who have been relying heavily on Williamson’s scoring and playmaking abilities this season. Despite his absence, the team remains focused on continuing to compete and push for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference.
Fans and teammates alike are sending their well wishes to Williamson for a speedy and complete recovery. In the meantime, the Pelicans will need to rally together and step up in his absence to secure a win against the Grizzlies. Stay tuned for updates on Williamson’s condition and return to the court. #Pelicans #ZionWilliamson #InjuryUpdate #GrizzliesGame

Pelicans rule out Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram vs. Grizzlies
NEW ORLEANS — Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has been ruled out for Friday night’s game at the Memphis Grizzlies.
Williamson sat out Monday night’s victory over Utah with a non-COVID illness and New Orleans announced Thursday that he would remain out Friday “due to return to play reconditioning from illness.”
Williamson will miss his 35th game this season. He previously missed 27 games because of an early-November left hamstring strain.
He has played in just 10 games, most recently in the Pelicans’ victory over the Jazz on Friday, scoring 24 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in less than 24 minutes.
Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram (left ankle sprain) also won’t play at Memphis, missing his 21st straight game.
The New Orleans Pelicans have announced that both Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram will be ruled out for their upcoming game against the Memphis Grizzlies. This news comes as a blow to the Pelicans, as both players have been key contributors to the team this season.Williamson, who is currently dealing with a foot injury, will miss his second consecutive game. The young superstar has been averaging 27.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this season.
Ingram, on the other hand, is sidelined with a hamstring injury. The forward has been averaging 23.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game this season.
Without two of their top players, the Pelicans will need to rely on their depth to step up and fill the void left by Williamson and Ingram. It will be a tough challenge for New Orleans as they look to secure a victory against the Grizzlies.
Fans will be eagerly awaiting the return of Williamson and Ingram as they continue to recover from their respective injuries. In the meantime, the Pelicans will need to rally together and put forth a strong effort in their upcoming matchup against Memphis.

Pelicans vs Grizzlies Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game
A fast-paced matchup does no good for Zach Edey’s production, and we also expect the lack of playing time to factor into the rookie big man failing to eclipse tonight’s points total.
Photo By – Imagn Images. Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey adjusts his face mask.
As a basketball-loving society, we have not spent enough time discussing the New Orleans Pelicans’ tailspin this season. Once an expected playoff team with a shiny new piece in Dejounte Murray, New Orleans is now in contention to have the highest odds at the No. 1 draft pick, despite its current four-game winning streak.
That winning streak should end tonight, and it should end decisively. However, not even a Memphis Grizzlies blowout usually gets Zach Edey enough production to warrant the faith sportsbooks put in his points prop.
My Pelicans vs. Grizzlies predictions may not be glamorous, but it is strong in their conviction of fading Edey putting the ball in the basket. Find out more in my NBA picks for Friday, January 24.
Pelicans vs Grizzlies prediction
My best bet
Zach Edey Under 6.5 points (+110 at bet365)My analysis
Some folks considered Zach Edey to be a trendy preseason bet to win Rookie of the Year. Even as he averages just 9.2 points and 7.2 rebounds, let’s not be too dismissive of those bets. They were not entirely misguided, just mostly misguided.Edey was never going to be a driving piece for the Memphis Grizzlies this season. He is, at least to some extent, an innings eater that allows Jaren Jackson Jr. to minimize his wear-and-tear during the regular season. But even in that regard, Edey does only so much, averaging 20.5 minutes this season.
With tonight’s spread of -11, surely we can trust Edey to play more minutes against the New Orleans Pelicans… right? Not so much. Memphis has won four games this month by double digits, and Edey did not crack 19 minutes in any of those four games.
He simply does not play as much as those preseason bettors expected. And in the long run, that will be okay. Edey will adjust to the NBA game, he will get into a bit better cardio shape, and he will have a quality career. But right now, he does not play enough to threaten his points prop most nights.
A points prop of merely 6.5 tonight does not change that logic. In 10 games this month — not solely an arbitrary range, but one also influenced by his return from a two-game absence before New Year’s — Edey has scored seven or more points in just three of them.
While there is a possibility this matchup features a bounty of points and some decent tempo, that should not buoy Edey’s production, as a faster pace will veer the game only further from him.
Pelicans vs Grizzlies same-game parlay
Please know this is not outright Edey doubt, and certainly not long-term shade.
This is, however, recognizing two offensive-driven teams with below-average defenses should push tonight’s scoring. Memphis ranks No. 1 in pace in the NBA in the last month, while New Orleans is No. 10. That kind of combination can provide exponential results.
And that kind of combination should limit Edey’s effectiveness. He simply is not someone first into the paint on most possessions. Furthermore, Edey has fallen short of this rebounding prop in nine of his 10 games this month.
