  • New Orleans Pelicans at Memphis Grizzlies odds, picks and predictions

The New Orleans Pelicans (12-32) and Memphis Grizzlies (29-15) meet Friday. Tip-off from FedExForum is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (NBA TV). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NBA odds around the Pelicans vs. Grizzlies odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.

    Season series: Grizzlies lead 2-0

The Pelicans’ Wednesday home game vs. the Milwaukee Bucks was postponed due to a winter storm in the New Orleans area.

They’re coming off back-to-back home victories over the Utah Jazz last Friday (Jan. 17) and Monday with the Over hitting in both games. New Orleans covered as a 12-point favorite in the first game with a 136-123 win (the Over was 232.5) but failed to cover as an 11-point favorite without F Zion Williamson (illness) in a 123-119 victory Monday (the Over was 231).

The Grizzlies beat the Charlotte Hornets 132-120 Wednesday, covering as 11.5-point home favorites with the Over (241.5) cashing. G Desmond Bane had a team-high 24 points, and G Luke Kennard scored 23, converting on a season-high seven 3-pointers (7-for-11).

The road team covered each meeting this season with the Over/Under (O/U) going 1-1. In their last meeting (Dec. 27), Memphis covered as a 7-point favorite with a 132-124 win in New Orleans as the Over (238.5) hit. F Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 33 points, while G Trey Murphy III scored 35 for the Pelicans.

Pelicans at Grizzlies picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Pelicans 124, Grizzlies 122

    Moneyline

This line feels like an overreaction to the Grizzlies (-600) winning 4 straight and Williamson (reconditioning) sitting for the Pelicans.

The Grizzlies have already won the first 2 meetings this season and may come in a little fat and happy on a 4-game win streak. New Orleans’ odds of upsetting the Grizzlies — in a potential let-down spot for Memphis — are better than the +425 ML suggests.

    Bet a half-unit on PELICANS (+425).

    Against the spread

Placing a larger bet taking the points is also recommended, as a Pelicans straight-up (SU) win probably won’t happen.

New Orleans has covered 5 of its last 6 games, and Monday’s non-cover vs. the Jazz was expected as the Pelicans had already covered as favorites in last Friday’s opener of the 2-game set.

The Pelicans are 7-3 SU and ATS in their last 10 games. The season-long stats (12-32 SU, 19-25 ATS) hide the fact that this is a team trending upward.

    BET 1½ units on PELICANS +11.5 (-118).

    Over/Under

For the Over to hit, the Pelicans will likely need to score 117 or more points. New Orleans has scored 119 or more points in 6 straight games, while the Grizzlies have allowed 119 or more in 9 of their last 14.

This total opened at 240.5 Thursday night, though, so it potentially has already moved too much to make this a profitable bet long term.

    LEAN OVER 243.5 (-110).

The New Orleans Pelicans are set to take on the Memphis Grizzlies in what promises to be an exciting NBA matchup. Both teams have had their ups and downs this season, but they will be looking to secure a crucial win in this game.

The odds for this game are relatively close, with the Grizzlies being slight favorites at -110, while the Pelicans are at +100. The over/under for total points scored in the game is set at 225.5.

In terms of picks and predictions, this game could go either way. The Pelicans have a talented roster led by Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, who have been putting up impressive numbers this season. On the other hand, the Grizzlies have been playing solid basketball behind the leadership of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.

Ultimately, I believe that the Grizzlies will come out on top in this game. They have been playing well as of late and have a strong home-court advantage. I predict that they will cover the spread and win by a narrow margin.

Overall, this game has the potential to be a close and high-scoring affair. Both teams will be looking to make a statement and secure a much-needed victory. It will certainly be a game worth watching.

  • Pelicans’ game vs. Bucks has been postponed, NBA announces | Pelicans

The league has recently postponed Lakers and Clippers games due to the Los Angeles fires, and an Atlanta Hawks game due to icy roads.

The Pelicans are on a four-game winning streak, and most recently completed its largest comeback in franchise history against the Utah Jazz on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The roster is slowly piecing itself back together, as Zion Williamson has returned from his hamstring injury as well as scorers Trey Murphy, Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum and Jordan Hawkins also returning to the lineup after suffering early-season injuries. Star wing Brandon Ingram has been out of the lineup since Dec. 7 with an ankle injury.

The LSU women’s basketball team also had its next game on Thursday night at South Carolina postponed to Friday because of the weather conditions, as well.

The NBA has announced that the New Orleans Pelicans’ game against the Milwaukee Bucks has been postponed. This decision comes after multiple players on the Pelicans have tested positive for COVID-19. The league is taking necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of all players, staff, and fans. Stay tuned for updates on when the game will be rescheduled. #Pelicans #Bucks #NBA #PostponedGame #COVID19Safety

New Orleans Pelicans game against Milwaukee Bucks postponed due to icy conditions

THE NBA IS A LONG SEASON THAT DOESN’T END UNTIL THE SECOND WEEK OF APRIL, SO PLENTY OF TIME TO MAKE THAT GAME UP. AS YOU ALL SAID, THIS WAS THE SMART DECISION. IT’S NOT ABOUT PLAYER SAFETY. THERE’S HUNDREDS OF SUPPORT PERSONNEL THAT MAKE THESE GAMES HAPPEN. FANS GETTING HERE AGAIN, THIS ISN’T WHAT WE DEAL WITH HERE. SO PEOPLE ON THE STREETS TODAY, IT’S A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE. SO IT WAS THE RIGHT DECISION BY THE LEAGUE. LET ME JUST LAY GIVE YOU A LAY OF THE LAND. SET THE SCENE FOR YOU. WE’RE GOING TO PAN TO OUR RIGHT. THIS IS CHAMPION SQUARE RIGHT WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. AND YOU CAN SEE THERE’S ACTUALLY WORKERS WORKING IN CHAMPION SQUARE BECAUSE THE SUPER BOWL WORK IS ONGOING. • Jazz vs Pelicans Prediction, Picks, and Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

Walker Kessler doesn’t have much help around him in New Orleans tonight, so look for the Utah Jazz big to grab a good chunk of the available rebounds tonight, per our NBA betting picks.

Zak Hanshew - Betting Analyst at Covers.com

    Jan 20, 2025 • 11:16 ET

    • 4 min read

Photo By – Imagn Images. Pictured: Walker Kessler.

The Pelicans defeated the Jazz 136-123 on Friday, and shorthanded Utah will be back at Smoothie King Center on Monday for a rematch.

My Jazz vs. Pelicans predictions expect Walker Kessler to take advantage of an increased opportunity and crash the glass tonight. Read my NBA picks to see why you should take the Over on Kessler’s rebound line.

    Jazz vs Pelicans prediction

    My best bet
Walker Kessler Over 11.5 rebounds (-115 at bet365)

    My analysis

Walker Kessler is averaging a career-best 11.3 rebounds per game this season, so he’ll need to be just above average in this one to cash this prop. I think he’ll be exceptional on the glass tonight and cruise past this line.

Kessler has been far better as a rebounder on the road than at home, pulling down just 10.3 boards at Delta Center and 12.2 in all other venues. He’s hit the Over on this line in 10 of 17 on the road, making this a favorable matchup in the Big Easy.

The Utah Jazz big man has a stellar matchup with a New Orleans Pelicans team that has allowed the fourth-most rebounds (46) to opponents this season. That includes the seventh-most defensive rebounds (34.1) and the fifth-most offensive rebounds (11.9). Kessler leads the Association in offensive boards this season at 4.3.

John Collins is out tonight, and Kessler has thrived with him on the sidelines this season. In 21 games with Collins, Kessler has averaged 10.6 total rebounds and 3.9 offensive rebounds across 28.7 minutes. In 11 games without Collins, Kessler has averaged 12.6 total rebounds and 5.1 offensive rebounds across 31.3 minutes.

Kessler gets a perfect convergence of elite matchup and increased opportunity tonight, making this an easy Over selection.

    Jazz vs Pelicans same-game parlay

    Walker Kessler Over 11.5 rebounds

    Trey Murphy Over 19.5 points

    Keyonte George Over 22.5 points

Trey Murphy has been a tremendous offensive force for New Orleans this season, averaging a career-high 21.5 points per game. He’s hit the Over in 15 of 27 overall, including seven of 14 at home. He finished with 19 points in Friday’s tilt with Utah after going for at least 20 in four straight.

Over his last 13, Murphy has averaged 25.2 points and gone Over 10 times. His points line is set at 22.5, but I’m more comfortable taking shorter odds at 19.5 and adding this to our three-legger.

Four of Utah’s Top 5 scorers are out tonight, and the absences of Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, John Collins, and Jordan Clarkson leave 72.4 points up for grabs. Keyonte George is Utah’s lone healthy offensive force remaining, and he should cruise past this line.

George missed five straight with a heel injury but has returned without any rust, posting back-to-back 26-point efforts. Expect him to receive the green light to fire away.

In tonight’s NBA matchup, the Jazz will take on the Pelicans in what is sure to be an exciting game. Both teams have been playing well as of late, with the Jazz currently sitting at the top of the Western Conference and the Pelicans fighting for a playoff spot in the loaded Western Conference.

The Jazz come into this game as the favorites, with odds of -150 to win. They have been dominant on both ends of the court this season, boasting the best defense in the league and a high-powered offense led by Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. The Jazz are currently on a six-game winning streak and will look to extend that streak against the Pelicans.

The Pelicans, on the other hand, have been playing well recently, winning four of their last five games. Led by Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans have a potent offense that can keep up with the best in the league. They will look to pull off the upset against the Jazz and improve their playoff positioning.

In terms of prediction, I believe the Jazz will come out on top in this game. Their defense should be able to contain the Pelicans’ offense, while their own offense should be able to put up enough points to secure the win. My pick is for the Jazz to win and cover the spread.

    Prediction: Jazz win

    Picks: Jazz -150

    Odds: Jazz -150, Pelicans +130

It should be a great game between two talented teams, so make sure to tune in tonight to see who comes out on top!

  • What Are CJ McCollum’s Ethnicity and Religion? Exploring Pelicans Guard’s Family Roots and Belief

CJ McCollum might be well-known for his skills on the court but there’s more to the New Orleans Pelicans star’s story than just basketball. When a rookie enters the NBA, he’s often told about the money, the hard work, and the fun and enjoyment that comes with this life. But something many people overlook is that suddenly they will have a lot of free time on their hands.

However, that has not been a problem for McCollum who has a journalism degree from the University of Lehigh. Furthermore, he also has a range of other hobbies from media as the Pelicans veteran hosts a podcast, to real estate to financial investments to wine as he purchased a vineyard back in 2021.

I’ve always had other interests and hobbies I was passionate about,” McCollum told NBA. “It’s allowed me to grow (as a person). When I got (to the NBA), I knew I was going to have a lot of free time. You have 24 hours in a day, but you can only work out so much.” Suggesting the Pelicans’ guard tries to make the most of his time outside of the Smoothie King Center.

However, his path to the NBA was anything but easy. Even during his time at Lehigh University McCollum always thought like a professional. He knew to be the first Mountain Hawk to make it to the NBA, he had to be the hardest-working player on the team and he did just that! Throughout his journey from Lehigh to the NBA, his family has always been there to support him. Let’s get to know more about the Pelicans star’s family roots and ethnicity.

Is CJ McCollum of mixed ethnicity? Where is the Pelicans star from?

Born in Canton, Ohio, to parents Erick and Kathy McCollum, CJ started his basketball journey pretty early. Additionally, both Erick and Kathy are American citizens of African-American descent making CJ McCollum of African-American descent as well. His family are tightly-knitted together and has been incredibly supportive along with his basketball-minded brother.

Furthermore, CJ’s dad has been instrumental in his development and has pushed his son to become the player he is today in the NBA. Also, basketball runs in the family as his brother Erick McCollum II has played professionally overseas since 2010 and has helped inspire CJ to follow in his footsteps and the two brothers share a special relationship.

What religion does CJ McCollum follow?

Although there is no accurate information on which religion Pelicans star CJ McCollum follows. Looking at a 2015 interview that he gave to OregonLive.com one might assume that the guard follows Christianity. In that interview, McCollum was asked about who he would like to interview past or present.

To which he replied, “Probably Jesus, then, right? If it’s an athlete, then probably Michael Jordan or Allen Iverson. Someone like that.” As he further stated it would be a lengthy interview given he has lots of questions for Jesus. Also, in an X post from 201,9 McCollum quoted a verse from the bible along with match-day pictures, “The Bible says “Faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain “ 1 down #ripcity

These are a few of several examples where McCollum has hinted toward following Christianity. However, we cannot fully assume anything unless he confirms it by himself. Nonetheless, the 33-year-old guard continues to remain one of the best players in the league as the hunt for his maiden championship goes on with the Pelicans.

  • Dejounte Murray’s night a reminder why Pelicans signed him | Pelicans

Dejounte Murray was finally able to let out some of the emotions he’s kept pent up inside him this season.

He pounded his chest Wednesday night as he made his way back up the Smoothie King Center floor.

He hopped around on one leg, right arm still hanging in the air after burying one of his four 3-pointers.

Murray had been waiting for a moment like this.

So had the New Orleans Pelicans.

This is why the Pelicans brought the veteran guard to New Orleans in the first place.

Closing out games has been a chink in the Pelicans’ armor for a while and Murray was supposed to be the guy to fix it.

Murray scored 13 points over the last six minutes and finished with a season-best 30 points in the 119-116 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Getting the win was the most important thing, Murray says.

But a close second had to be the joy he had in helping secure the Pelicans’ fifth win in their last eight games. Murray put that joy on display on Wednesday, especially after hitting the 3-pointer.

“I think at those times, I just felt something and it felt good,” Murray said. “It wasn’t even about the shot going in. It was just a moment I let out emotions.”

And for Murray, there have been plenty of emotions to sift through in the first 2½ months of the season.

There was the broken left hand he suffered in the season opening win against the Chicago Bulls on a night he almost recorded a triple double in his Pelicans’ debut. It’s a game he probably shouldn’t have even been playing in. Just days before that, his mom had suffered a stroke. He could’ve chosen to miss the start of the season, but she insisted he didn’t. Then he broke his hand and ended up missing time anyway. Seventeen games.

“I’m trying to get my fun back,” Murray said. “It’s nothing with the team. Just dealing with a lot. It’s been tough for me. I’m a strong person, but at the same time I’m human. I think sometimes I can forget that.”

Murray’s been back for 24 games now. Slowly but surely he’s finding his way on his new team, where the guys in the starting lineup seem to change almost every night.

“New teammates, new environment, new community,” said Pelicans’ head coach Willie Green. “It just took time to be able to get to this point where he feels comfortable and confident. And his teammates have been doing a great job of rallying behind him.”

Murray has strung together three of his best games as a Pelican during this recent stretch. He’s averaging 23.6 points, 7.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds over the past three games. He’s made at least four 3-pointers in each of those games, including a season-best six in the close loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday. Even more importantly, he’s been better at taking care of the basketball. There was a rough stretch in November when he had back-to-back games with 8 turnovers. He hasn’t had more than two turnovers in any of the past three games.

Green hasn’t been surprised to get this version of Murray. It’s why they traded  Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., E.J. Liddell, Cody Zeller, and two future first-round draft picks  to get him.

“That’s just who he is, who he’s been over the course of the last five to seven seasons,” Green said. “It’s good to see him push through. He’s had the hand injury, came back knocking off rust. He’s mentally tough. He’s a leader. It was great to see him put together a game like he did (Wednesday) just to remind everybody of what he’s capable of doing on the basketball court.”

Murray will look to continue that Friday when the Pelicans (10-32) host the Utah Jazz (10-29) in a game between the two teams at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. You can pretty much guarantee Murray will be ready to go. He’s been listed as “questionable” or “probable” on every injury report lately as he deals with right elbow soreness. It’s the same right elbow he left in the air after one of his 3-pointers Wednesday night, soaking in the moment of his best game as a Pelican yet.

“Basketball is my peace,” Murray said. “It’s joy with it. At the end of the day, I’ll continue to push and do my part. … I want the fans to say I work hard. I play hard. And I want the organization to think and feel the same way.”

Just a few weeks into the new season, Dejounte Murray’s performance on the court last night served as a powerful reminder of why the New Orleans Pelicans were so eager to sign him in the offseason. The young point guard showcased his incredible talent and potential, leading the team to a dominating victory.

Murray’s stat line was impressive, with a double-double of 23 points and 12 assists, along with several steals and rebounds. His court vision and playmaking ability were on full display, as he orchestrated the offense with precision and found his teammates in all the right spots.

But it wasn’t just Murray’s individual stats that stood out – it was his impact on the entire team. His leadership on the court was evident, as he motivated his teammates and set the tone for the game. His defensive prowess also shone through, as he disrupted the opposing team’s offense and forced turnovers.

Overall, Murray’s night was a perfect example of why the Pelicans were so thrilled to add him to their roster. His combination of skill, athleticism, and basketball IQ make him a valuable asset to the team, and his performance last night only solidified that fact.

As the season progresses, fans can expect to see more standout performances from Dejounte Murray, as he continues to prove himself as a key player for the Pelicans. With him leading the way, the team is poised for success in the upcoming games and beyond.

  • Mavericks’ Jason Kidd says referees were ‘scared to death’ to call goaltending on Pelicans’ game-winning block

The Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans were in the midst of an entertaining matchup Wednesday night, but instead of the story being about the standout performances of Trey Murphy III, Dejounte Murray, Daniel Gafford and Jaden Hardy, the game is gaining attention because of a blatant missed call by officials which significantly impacted the outcome of the game.

I’m typically not of the belief that one play dictates the outcome of a whole game, especially when the Mavericks fumbled multiple opportunities to win this game against a team that had nine wins coming into this contest. But this was one of those eyebrow-raising moments that gives even more credence to the belief that referees should be fined for missed calls or poor judgment.

New Orleans had the ball with around 15 seconds on the clock and a one-point lead. In every scenario like this, the team defending will try and go for a steal first, and if that doesn’t work, they’ll foul, giving the team with the lead even more chance to win the game. All New Orleans had to do was take care of the ball and hold for a foul. But the Mavericks pulled off the rare steal, allowing them to take the lead and potentially win. Here’s what happened next:

Did you catch it? No? Here’s a slower replay of it:

Yep, that’s a blatant goaltend by Murphy on Spencer Dinwiddie’s layup that the referees completely missed. What’s worse is crew chief Gediminas Petraitis was standing at the baseline underneath the basket with a clear view of the goaltend and didn’t call it. Dinwiddie immediately signaled that it was a goaltend, but to no avail, and because it was a no-call, it was not reviewable. Jason Kidd was seen walking the sideline mouthing, “I don’t have a timeout to challenge it,” but even if he did, per the NBA rulebook, that’s not something a coach’s challenge can be used on as there was no call on the floor.

After the game, when asked if he got any explanation from the officials about the blatant missed call, Kidd, in his typical stonewalled demeanor, said, “Yeah, they didn’t see it. That’s the explanation.”

Kidd then went further to criticize the officials for not seeing the goaltending on that last play.

“It’s tough, I get it, that’s their job, they didn’t do their job tonight,” Kidd said. “…The referees have a tough job, they clearly did not get that one right. It cost us maybe the game. We can learn from that, and hopefully, the referees can be better in close games.”

While the play happened in the last two minutes of the game, and because there was no call on the floor, it wasn’t reviewable by the officials. But had a goaltend been called, the officials would’ve been able to review it to confirm, something Kidd thinks they should’ve done.

“I think the review is to protect the officials, the review is to try to get it right,” Kidd said. “That’s what the review or challenge is for. In the last two minutes, if they thought something [happened], they should’ve blown the whistle to get it right. I think they all three were scared to death to do anything, so they did nothing and they let it go.”

Dinwiddie, whose shot was at the center of the controversial no-call, gave a detailed explanation of how he set it up for a goaltend to be called.

“Naji [Marshall]’s already throwing me the ball, there’s no room for me to go up and dunk it,” Dinwiddie said. “I see them coming, and it’s just like a scoop layup, I tell you all the time. If you watch throughout my career, if I beat the big or whatever, and I hold it out right here, I put it directly on the glass for two reasons: 1. I’m tall and long and extended so they would have to jump over me to block it. If you do happen to block it, it’s already hit the glass. I’m scoring because either it’s a layup or you’re goaltending. I’ve made a bunch of money doing the same type of move…You saw me do it to [Yves] Missi three, four times in the game.”

PJ Washington echoed the same sentiment after the game: “It was definitely a goaltend.” Even the official NBA account on X (formerly known as Twitter) first tweeted out the highlight of Murphy’s game-winning block, only to delete it after a community note was added to correct the post to say it was a goaltend per the league’s rulebook.

The Last Two Minute report has since confirmed what the Mavericks and many fans watching the game already knew: “Murphy blocks the shot attempt after the ball makes contact with the backboard and has a chance to score.” Had that been called a goaltend, it would have given Dallas a one-point lead with about five seconds left in the game.

Dallas isn’t expected to file a formal protest about the game’s outcome, per Marc Stein, which was to be expected because it’s rare for any team to go that route. While the L2M report vindicated them, at the end of the day, the Mavericks will have to eat this loss and, perhaps next time, not put themselves in a position for the last play of the game to matter that much. There were several instances where Dallas could’ve pulled away with a win, especially after building up a seven-point lead with six minutes left, and at every turn, they squandered it.

Despite being without Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and Dereck Lively II, there was no reason for the game to be that close against a New Orleans team that sits last in the Western Conference. The officiating was bad on that last play, but it never should’ve come to that.

In a recent post-game interview, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd expressed frustration with the referees for not calling a goaltending violation on the game-winning block by the New Orleans Pelicans. Kidd claimed that the referees were “scared to death” to make the call, despite the obvious interference with the ball on its way down.

The controversial play occurred in the final seconds of the game, with the Mavericks trailing by one point. As Luka Doncic attempted a game-winning layup, Pelicans’ center Jaxson Hayes swatted the ball away just before it reached the basket. Replays showed that Hayes’ hand made contact with the ball while it was still on its way up, a clear violation of the rules.

Kidd’s comments have sparked debate among basketball fans, with some agreeing that the referees missed a crucial call, while others argue that it was a judgment call in a high-pressure situation. Regardless of the outcome, the Mavericks will have to regroup and focus on their next game, as they continue to chase a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference.
