Ohio State offers Jim Knowles contract extension amid Oklahoma, Penn State interest, per report

Ohio State and Ryan Day extended a contract extension offer to Jim Knowles, making him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Knowles, who helped the Buckeyes to a national championship earlier, is linked to defensive coordinator openings at both Oklahoma and Penn State. Knowles was the third-highest paid coordinator in all of college football this past season, earning $2.2 million in a base salary as part of a three-year extension signed last January. That contract expires on Jan. 31, 2027.

LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker ($2.5 million) and Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale ($2.3 million) were the only two assistant coaches with higher 2024 salaries than Knowles. Martindale earns $2.75 million next season with the Wolverines.

Ohio State led the FBS in scoring defense during their national championship run this season, holding opponents to just 12.9 points per game. The Buckeyes ranked first nationally in total yards allowed per play (4.19), second in yards per rush attempt allowed (2.65) and tied for sixth in yards per pass attempt allowed (6.0).

Oklahoma has yet to hire a new defensive coordinator since Zac Alley left for the same position at West Virginia in late December. The Sooners are expected to put together an aggressive offer to try to lure Knowles away from Ohio State, according to Sooners Illustrated.

Knowles has also been mentioned in connection to the Penn State defensive coordinator vacancy after Tom Allen left for the same position at Clemson shortly after the Nittany Lions were eliminated from the College Football Playoff.

Knowles was asked about the reported interest from Oklahoma last Saturday prior to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, but offered little comment.

“Beat Notre Dame; that’s all I’m focused on,” Knowles said. “These things happen, I guess, when you have success, players are making plays. My job is to put them in the best position. These things come up when you do well.”

Knowles finished his third season at Ohio State. He has nearly 40 years of coaching experience at the college level having recently served as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State (2018-21) and Duke (2010-17). Knowles was the head coach at Cornell (2004-09) before returning to the FBS level.

Knowles improved the Oklahoma State defense in each of his three seasons with the program, becoming a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to honor the best assistant coach in college football, after the 2021 campaign.

Day announced the hiring of Knowles on Dec. 7, 2021. The Buckeyes made a significant jump defensively after his first season, ranking top three nationally in points allowed per game (11.2), passing yards allowed per game (145.9) and total yards allowed per game (265.4).

In a surprising turn of events, Ohio State has reportedly offered defensive coordinator Jim Knowles a contract extension amid interest from both Oklahoma and Penn State.

Knowles, who joined the Buckeyes just this past season, has quickly made an impact on the team’s defense, helping lead them to a Big Ten Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff. His innovative schemes and aggressive play-calling have earned him praise from players, coaches, and fans alike.

With both Oklahoma and Penn State expressing interest in Knowles, Ohio State has moved quickly to secure his services for the foreseeable future. Penn State campuses celebrate, commemorate Black History Month 2025
Musician Lakecia Benjamin — 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, Eisenhower Auditorium. Charismatic and dynamic saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin fuses traditional conceptions of jazz, hip-hop and soul with her roots in Latin dance music. Benjamin adds to her three 2023 Grammy Award nominations with two more for Best Jazz Instrumental and Best Jazz Performance, for “Phoenix Reimagined (Live).”

Curator-led, behind-the-scenes exhibition tour, “Defining the New Negro: Voices of the Harlem Renaissance a Century Later” — 11 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, meet at the exhibition, located outside the Paterno Family Humanities Reading Room, second floor central Pattee Library. Throughout the month, students, faculty, and staff participated in panel discussions, film screenings, art exhibits, and cultural performances that explored the themes of resilience, unity, and empowerment within the Black community. The events aimed to educate and raise awareness about the importance of Black history and the ongoing fight for racial justice and equality.

One of the highlights of the month was a keynote address by a prominent Black activist and scholar, who spoke about the legacy of Black leaders and the importance of continuing the fight for racial equality in the present day. The speech was followed by a lively Q&A session that engaged the audience in a meaningful dialogue about the challenges and opportunities facing the Black community.

In addition to educational events, Penn State campuses also hosted social gatherings and networking opportunities for Black students and allies to come together, celebrate their shared heritage, and build connections within the community.

Overall, the celebration of Black History Month at Penn State campuses in 2025 was a powerful and inspiring reminder of the resilience, strength, and diversity of the Black community, and a call to action to continue the fight for justice and equality for all.

Penn State is 3-1 in league home games, including an 81-70 victory over Purdue in early December, but 0-4 in games played away from Happy Valley (including a 77-71 loss to Indiana at the Palestra in Philadelphia).

That said, two of PSU’s three road losses were against Michigan State (currently leading the league at 7-0) and Illinois (currently sixth in the league at 5-4, but 4-1 in league before some recent hiccups). Penn State also gave Michigan State a battle in East Lansing a week ago, losing just 90-85. In other words, the Hawkeyes are going to need to play much better than they’ve been playing for the last two weeks to get a win tonight.

This game pits two of the league’s top offenses against one another — at least on paper. Iowa has been the highest-scoring team in the league this year (87.3 ppg), while Penn State ranks fourth in the conference in scoring (84.2 ppg). Neither team has been quite as prolific in league play, with Iowa slipping to fourth in the league (82.0 ppg) and Penn State dropping to ninth (76.2 ppg).

This still projects to be a shootout between two good offenses that prefer to play at a fast tempo, though; Penn State ranks 41st in offensive efficiency (Iowa: 19th) and 30th in adjusted tempo (Iowa: 22nd). There’s a reason the gambling sites set such a high total (166.5 points) for this game, after all.

Penn State has been good at most things on offense, but their biggest strengths have been getting to the free throw line (57th in free throw rate) and converting shots (47th in effective FG% at 54.8%). The Nittany Lions have been especially deadly inside the arc and near the rim; they’ve made 56.2% (38th) of their 2-point attempts this year (alongside 34.8% shooting from long range, 112th). That’s a concerning number for an Iowa defense that is currently 328th in the country in defending 2-point shots (55.8%).

Unlike Iowa, which pairs a (usually) high-powered offense with a (usually) poor defense, Penn State has been generally decent on the defensive end. PSU ranks 71st in defensive efficiency, though that does put them just 13th in the Big Ten. (For comparison, Iowa is a very distant 18th in the league in defensive efficiency; Penn State is closer to Wisconsin, the fifth-ranked team in defensive efficiency than it is to Iowa in 18th.)

Penn State has been bad at preventing opponents at getting offensive rebounds (18th in the league, allowing teams to get 35.6% of their misses) and bad at contesting shots (13th in effective FG%, allowing opponents to post an effective FG% of 54.4%, including 56.9% on 2-point shots). PSU’s biggest strength on defense has been forcing turnovers — the Nittany Lions are second in the league in that department and have forced giveaways on 20.7% of opponent possessions, including steals on 11.9% of opponent possessions. Turnover prevention is one thing Iowa remains excellent at on offense; the Hawkeyes have given the ball up on just 14.1% of possessions, best in the Big Ten.

Penn State’s offense has been potent this year because of its balance. Six PSU players are averaging 20+ minutes this season — and all are scoring in double figures.

“I think they’re balanced offensively because they have a lot of really good players,” said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery earlier this week. “They play a style that’s conducive to the specific skill sets that those guys have. They play fast, they go with it, but they’re also an unselfish group. They’re gonna press and run and move it. It starts with Ace [Baldwin, Jr.], but there’s a lot of guys that can make plays off the bounce.”

Indeed, Baldwin is leading the team in scoring (14.7 ppg) and assists (8.1 apg). His eye-catching assist number ranks second in the Big Ten this year as well; Baldwin has been elite at distributing the ball in PSU’s offense and finding open players for easy buckets. Wing Nick Kern has been Penn State’s second leading scorer, at 12.6 ppg, though that’s just percentage points ahead of big man Yanic Kronan Niderhauser (12. 4 ppg) and forward Zach Hicks (12.1 ppg).

Hicks has been PSU’s most reliable threat from outside, making 42.9% of his three-point attempts on a team-high 112 attempts. Baldwin (29.7%, 22-of-74) and Freddie Dilione V (33.3%, 21-of-63) have been the next-most frequent shooters from deep for Penn State, though they haven’t been particularly accurate. That said, Iowa’s defense has proven to be very good for what ails three-point shooters this season.

The scoring strength of Penn State is in the paint; the Nittany Lions have four players shooting over 62% on 2-point attempts, including Hicks (62.5%), Kronan Niderhauser (65.5%), Kern (62.9%), and rotation player Puff Johnson (68.5%). That ability to score near the rim should be significant concern for an Iowa defense that’s resembled a layup line at its worst moments over the last two weeks. The interior defense is going to need to be much more stout in this game or the Hawkeyes are liable to get pummeled in the paint.

Iowa MBB will face off against Penn State in an exciting matchup this weekend. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to secure a crucial win in conference play.

Iowa has been led by standout guard Jordan Bohannon, who is averaging over 17 points per game. They have also received strong contributions from forward Keegan Murray, who leads the team in rebounds and blocks.

Penn State, on the other hand, has been paced by guard Seth Lundy, who is averaging over 16 points per game. The Nittany Lions have also seen strong play from forward John Harrar, who leads the team in rebounds.

This game promises to be a high-scoring affair, as both teams have potent offenses. Iowa will look to push the pace and score in transition, while Penn State will aim to slow the game down and execute their half-court offense.

The Nittany Lions are coming off a dominating 31-7 win at Nebraska last Friday night. The Nittany Lions rolled up eight wins, including three tech falls and a major, in front of a Nebraska wrestling record crowd of over 6,600 in the Devaney Center. Penn State improved to 8-0 overall with the win, 2-0 in Big Ten action.

The Penn State Nittany Lions opened up Big Ten dual action on Friday, Jan. 10, by shutting out visiting Michigan State 55-0 in Rec Hall. Penn State tied its all-time record for margin of victory with the effort (Buffalo, 55-0, Feb. 18, 2018). The Nittany Lions had six pins (Greg Kerkvliet, Shayne Van Ness, Tyler Kasak, Levi Haines, Carter Starocci, Josh Barr), three technical falls (Luke Lilledahl, Braeden Davis, Mitchell Mesenbrink) and a major (Beau Bartlett).

BECKETT RUNNER-UP AT F&M, 5 LIONS COMPETE
Senior Sam Beckett went 4-1 with three majors to take second place at 174 in the Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday, Jan. 10. Four other Lions competed as well: Cael Nasdeo picked up two wins at 141, Brock Weiss grabbed two wins at 149 and Ty Watson won twice at 157. Tim Levine picked up a victory at 141.

ZACK RYDER NAMED B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK (1/8)
Freshman Zack Ryder was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5, 2025. Ryder was one of nine Penn State Nittany Lion wrestlers to head to the 2025 Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Jan. 4-5. He rolled through a strong field at 184 to claim the 184-pound title as a true freshman. Ryder went 5-0 overall with a pin and a tech fall. He posted a dominant 9-2 win over No. 22 DJ Parker of Oklahoma in the quarterfinals and then pinned No. 25 TJ Stewart of Virginia Tech in the semifinals. He downed Northern Colorado’s Al Heeg 6-1 (sv) in the finals.

THREE LIONS WIN SCUFFLE TITLES, FIVE PLACE AT UTC
Penn State sent nine individuals to Chattanooga for the 2025 Southern Scuffle on Jan. 4-5 and three true freshmen won titles. Five Penn Staters placed overall. Zack Ryder went 5-0 with a pin and a tech to win the crown at 184. He beat #22 DJ Parker of Oklahoma 9-2 in the quarters and pinned #25 TJ Stewart of Virginia Tech in the semis on his way to the championship. Connor Mirasola went 5-0 with a pin, two techs and a major to win at 197, downing #30 Patrick Brophy of The Citadel 7-3 in the finals. Cole Mirasola went 4-0 with two techs and a major to win at 285. He downed #29 Connor Barkett of Duke in the quarters and majored #25 Lucas Stoddard of Army in the finals. Sophomore Connor Pierce went 4-1 to place second at 149 and senior+ Kurt McHenry went 6-2 to take fifth at 125.

NASDEO WINS EDINBORO OPEN CROWN; BECKETT SECOND
True freshman Cael Nasdeo went 3-0 with a tech and a major (plus a non-collegiate win) to claim the 141 pound title at the Edinboro Open on Jan. 4. Redshirt freshman Sam Beckett went 2-1 at 174 and took second place.

PENN STATE NEARLY PERFECT IN NASHVILLE
The Penn State Nittany Lions went 3-0 at the 2024 Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, in dominant fashion. The Nittany Lions notched two shutout wins and went 29-1 overall in their three duals. Penn State shutout Binghamton 52-0 and #15 Little Rock 44-0 and downed #8 Missouri 41-3. The Nittany Lions had 29 wins, 22 for bonus (four majors, eight technical falls, eight pins and two forfeits) and outscored its three opponents 135-3.

Penn State roared to a 41-3 win over #8 Missouri on Sunday, Dec. 22, to close out the 2024 Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville. Beau Bartlett posted a 4-1 win over #16 Josh Edmond at 141 and Carter Starocci majored #10 Colton Hawks 10-1 at 184 to lead Penn State. Levi Haines, ranked #2 at 174, lost a thrilling 4-1 sudden victory decision to #1 Keegan O’Toole in the dual’s marquee match up.

Josh Barr posted a 4-1 (sv) win over #5 Stephen Little at 197 and Braeden Davis downed #5 Nassir Bailey 1-0 at 133 to spark Penn State to a 44-0 shutout win over #15 Little Rock in its second dual at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals on Dec. 22. The shutout was Penn State’s third straight. The Lions also got ranked wins from Shayne Van Ness, who pinned #16 Jordan Williams at 149; Tyler Kasak, a 4-2 winner over #20 Matty Bianchi at 157; and Mitchell Mesenbrink, who roared to a 17-1 tech over #21 Joey Bianchi at 165.

The Nittany Lions opened up the 2024 Journeymen Collegiate Duals with a 52-0 shutout win over Binghamton. Luke Lilledahl posted a 19-4 tech over #33 Carson Wagner and Carter Starocci pinned #23 Will Ebert to spark Penn State.

Redshirt freshman Josh Barr was named Big Ten Freshman of the week for the week ending Dec. 22, 2024, his second honor of the season. Barr went 3-0 at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville on Sunday, Dec. 22. He had a tech fall in PSU’s win over Binghamton and a pin in the Lion win over Missouri. Barr also used a takedown in extra time to post a thrilling 4-1 (sv) win over #5 Stephen Little in the Nittany Lions’ victory over Little Rock.

The Penn State Nittany Lions rolled to a 54-0 shut out win over visiting Wyoming on Sunday, Dec. 15. The dual, moved to the Bryce Jordan Center earlier in the week due to scheduling conflicts with the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament in Rec Hall, was wrestled in front of over 7,300 fans, turning a Rec Hall sellout into an even bigger crowd for the Cowboy dual. Penn State had five pins, four technical falls and a major in posting its second most lopsided win ever (55-0 over Buffalo on Feb. 18, 2018).

Red shirt freshman Josh Barr tallied three takedowns (one in the second and two in a dominant third) to roll to an 11-3 major decision over #6 Michael Beard at 197, leading Penn State to a 36-3 win over the Mountain Hawks. The dual was wrestled in Allentown’s PPL Center in front of a sold out crowd of nearly 10,000 fans. Penn State won nine of ten bouts, also picking up a win from true freshman Luke Lilledahl over #15 Sheldon Seymour at 125. Barr was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week (12/12) for his efforts.

KELLY WINS MAT-TOWN I TITLE, LEVINE RUNNER-UP
Jack Kelly went 3-0 with two pins (in 0:13 and 0:46 seconds) to win the 174 pound title at the Mat-Town Invitational on Dec. 1 in Lock Haven, Pa. Tim Levine went 1-1 plus a non-collegiate victory to earn a runner-up finish at 133 while Sam Beckett went 2-1 to place third at 174.

MITCHELL MESENBRINK EARNS B1G W.O.W. HONORS (11/27)
Sophomore Mitchell Mesenbrink went 4-0 with four technical falls at the Black Knight Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 24, to earn the 165 pound title at West Point, N.Y., earning tournament Outstanding Wrestler honors. He was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for the week ending Nov. 24, 2024, for his efforts.

NITTANY LIONS DOMINATE BLACK KNIGHT INVITATIONAL
The Penn State Nittany Lions dominated the 2024 Black Knight Invitational at Army West Point on Nov. 24. The Nittany Lions won nine of the 10 individual titles, 18 of their 22 competitors placed in the top six and every Penn Stater garnered at least one win. With results against teammates not counting as official NCAA bouts, three of Penn State’s titles included shared crowns with teammates not wrestling each other in the title bouts. Luke Lilledahl (125), Beau Bartlett (141), Shayne Van Ness (149), Tyler Kasak (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink 165), Levi Haines/Matt Lee (174), Carter Starocci/Zack Ryder (184), Lucas Cochran (197) and Greg Kerkvliet/Cole Mirasola (285) were champs. Alex Facundo (157) and Lucas Cochran (197) were runners-up. Kurt McHenry (125) and Connor Mirasola (197) placed third. Penn State rolled up a 55-9 overall record at the event, including seven majors, 24 tech falls and 15 pins (46 of its 55 wins were for bonus). Various matches that pitted Nittany Lions against each other are not included in those totals.

NITTANY LIONS ROLL OVER DREXEL
41-3 IN SEASON OPENER
The Penn State Nittany Lions opened up the regular season with a 41-3 victory over visiting Drexel on Sunday, Nov. 17, in Rec Hall. True freshman Luke Lilledahl received a forfeit win at 125 in his collegiate debut and Greg Kerkvliet closed out the dual with a pin at 285. In between, the Nittany Lions picked up three decisions and four straight tech falls in the second half to roll to the win. Levis Haines (174) and Carter Starocci (184) competed the night before in the NWCA All-Star Classic Exhibition and posted tech falls the next day in the win over the Dragons. Also grabbing victories were Braeden Davis (133), Connor Pierce (149), Alex Facundo (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) and Lucas Cochran (197).

PSU SHINES AT ALL-STAR CLASSIC EXHIBITION
While Penn State’s official season began on Sunday, Nov. 17, in Rec Hall when the Nittany Lions beat Drexel, five Nittany Lions took part in the NWCA All-Star Classic exhibition the night before. The exhibition, not an official NCAA event and does not count towards wins, losses or RPI, featured Beau Bartlett (141), Shayne Van Ness (149), Tyler Kasak (157), Levi Haines (174) and Carter Starocci (184). Bartlett dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision to No. 2 Jesse Mendez of Ohio State, Van Ness rolled to a 16-4 major over No. 3 Ty Watters of West Virginia, Kasak posted a 4-2 win over No. 3 Peyten Keller of Ohio, Haines notched a 7-0 win over No. 3 Cade DeVos of South Dakota State and Starocci grabbed a hard-fought 4-1 (sv) win over No. 2 Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa.

The undefeated #1 ranked Nittany Lions of Penn State are in Jersey to wrestle the #14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Penn State will be very large favorites, as they will be all year in all their dual meets and in the NCAA Championships in the team title race.

But there will be some great matchups in Jersey Mike’s Arena on Rutgers’ Livingston campus in Piscataway, NJ. Plus any opportunity to witness a historically great team like the 2024-25 Nittany Lions is one worth taking advantage of!

As it’s a home dual for Rutgers, they’ll have a few more options at several weights, whereas Penn State as the away squad with limited backups. There’s a potential for nine ranked matchups tonight (and Conner Harer is right on the bubble at 157) and I think we’ll see most, if not all, of them!

We’re getting started shortly, or maybe have already started, we’re just waiting for BTN to flip over the dual once the Michigan vs Nebraska dual is over.

Nebraska finished their route of the Wolverines with a pinfall at 125 so we should be good to go very soon!

1st period: And away we go! Lilledahl continues his true freshman campaign with another tough test. No scores nor many attacks half way through the first. Down to short time and still nothing much going on. And the period ends no scores, and no stalls, as tied as you can possibly be.

2nd period: Peterson goes underneath first. He sits out and is free in seconds. Barely seconds, literally :02 on the RT clock for Lilledahl. Then more handfighting. Circling and probing but not many level changes. And we’ll got to the third, Peterson with a 1-0 lead.

3rd period: Peterson with an opportunity to ride out for the win. He stops Lilledahl’s first escape attempt but Lilledahl resets and stands to escape on his next opportunity. All tied up 1-1. Lilledahl taking a little bit more ground. Sweep single attempt, and another, both by Luke, but Dean evades. 30 seconds left in regulation. Shot by Peterson, he’s got a leg, Lilledahl rolls through, Peterson says on a leg, grabs the other, and there’s the three! Huge takedown for Dean Pete. 17 seconds left and they’ll get a restart. Lilledahl stands, he can’t shake Peterson, and Peterson hands Lilledahl the first loss of his collegiate career!

133: #7 Braeden Davis, Penn State vs #9 Dylan Shawver, Rutgers

1st period: Another great matchup, this time between two top 10 wrestlers. Shawver trying to hand Davis the second consecutive loss as he dropped a bout to Van Dee of Nebraska yesterday. Shawver is on a three dual win streak. This bout goes a lot like the one before it. No actions or flurries after two minutes. Shawver strikes in short time. He’s in deep but Davis defends and there’s the buzzer. 0-0, no stalls after 3 minutes.

2nd period: Shawver takes bottom. Shawver up to his feet, Davis struggling to bring him to the mat. Crowd and RU coaches want a stall call but they go out of bounds, no call. A few attempts by Shawver that Davis follows. He’s got over a minute of riding. Shawver stands, and now Davis hit with a stall. They go out of bounds in rear standing. Back to referee’s position. Roll attempt by Shawver is followed by Davis. Shawver to his feet. Davis can’t bring him down and another stall call. He maintains control though and he gets the ride out. 1-0 for Shawver though Davis has 2 minutes of riding time.

2nd period: Davis gets a tun underneath. Davis stands. Davis turns into Shawver, close to a reversal, but Shawver gets free and Davis picks up the escape. Riding time will likely get locked up soon. Shawver effectively losing. Davis on a shot, he’s got Shawver’s leg. No takedown yet but it’s chewing up a ton of clock. Shawver scrambling, and potentially dangerous is called with 3 seconds left. Davis will defend as the clock ticks away and he will win 2-1!

1st period: We got the Rizzler in the house and ‘BOOM’ t-shirts in the crowd. I’ll learn what all that means later. Now we’ve got Beau and Joey! Bartlett with a leg attack early and the first points are scored, the first of the first period so far in the dual! Quick escape from Olivieri makes it 3-1 in favor of Bartlett. The period ends with no more scores.

2nd period: Olivieri back underneath. He’s out quickly and it’s 3-2 still for Bartlett. About a minute into the period Bartlett strikes again, in on a single, and Olivieri makes him work for it but Beau finishes for three more and it’s 6-2. Bartlett trying to ride tough but a great hip heist as they go out of bounds and Olivieri makes it 6-3 before the period ends. On to the third.

3rd period: Bartlett tries out bottom. And he stands and escapes quickly to run the score up to 7-3. One minute left in regulation, can Olivieri find a way through Bartlett’s defenses? Beau continuing with his ‘one shoe blue, one shoe white’ look this season. Olivieri in deep but Bartlett parries him away, then goes in on a shot and has Olivieri in the air but time runs out before anyone can score. Bartlett with another win!

1st period: Rutgers calls an audible and puts true freshman Alex Nini out to face Van Ness, who is looking to bounce back after getting majored by Lovett last week. About a minute in Van Ness finds his way to Nini’s legs and there’s the first points. Nini escapes but Van Ness is back on the attack before Nini can ready himself and it’s 6-1 in a hurry. And Van Ness puts on a punishing ride for the next two minutes. No turns but 1:56 of RT and a 6-1 lead for SVN.

2nd period: Van Ness takes bottom, and he’s out quickly to make it 7-1. Nini on the attack now and he’s in deep on Van Ness’ legs. Great scramble, Nini making Van Ness work but never really had him in danger. Stalemated. Under a minute to go in the second. Now Van Ness back on the attack and he’ll get the takedown. Transition right into a leg turk and chancellor grip and there’s four nearfall for SVN before time runs out. 14-1 Shayne Van Ness and a bonus points are all but assured.

3rd period: Nini takes down and Van Ness cuts him immediately. Shot from Nini, down block go behind for Van Ness and it’s a tech-fall for Van Ness 17-2!

Zach Martini in stride as Penn State looms
On Thursday afternoon, just a few hours before Rutgers basketball took the court at Nebraska, Zach Martini’s phone started blowing up with bad news.

Filmmaker David Lynch, who was the subject of Martini’s senior thesis at Princeton University last year, had died.

“One of my inspirations in life,” Martini said of Lynch, whose movies “Twin Peaks” and “Mulholland Drive” are surrealist classics. “My thesis was 80 pages about him. I was listening to the music in his movies before the game.”

Sufficiently motivated, Martini turned in his best performance since arriving at Rutgers, scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting as the Scarlet Knights upset Nebraska on the road.

It seems like a Hollywood turn of events, but the truth behind Martini’s emergence, as Rutgers takes a two-game winning streak to a crucial showdown at Penn State Monday (6:30 p.m., Peacock), is more straightforward.

“I know I have less than two months of college basketball left,” he said. “I’m going to go down fighting.”

The version of Martini that contributed to the past week’s wins over UCLA and Nebraska is what Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell envisioned while recruiting him as a postgrad – a 6-foot-8 catch-and-shoot threat who makes the right pass and can hold his own defensively.

Prior to UCLA, however, Martini’s shot had gone cold. He’d made just 2-of-11 3-pointers since Rutgers began facing high-major competition. And he sat for the entirety of the Scarlet Knights’ 18-point butt-kicking at home by Purdue, their third straight loss and a low point for a season that teetered on the brink.

The next day, Pikiell gathered his despondent players for a chat. The coach’s message: If they started playing together, instead of individually, they could realize their enormous potential during the second half of the season.

“We’re not dead yet,” Martini said, providing the CliffsNotes version. “We had to commit to a ‘we over me’ agenda.”

Martini responded with a spirited practice, and Pikiell told him: Be ready, we might need you against UCLA.

“He was proud of the way I practiced coming off the Purdue game, how I didn’t throw in the towel after not checking in,” Martini said.

How could he pout when fellow forward Dylan Grant, a freshman, had continued to grind it out even though he barely saw the court?

“He didn’t say a thing,” Martini said. “And he got his opportunity.”

Pikiell finally called Grant’s number two weeks ago, and Grant took it and ran. Given another chance, Martini followed suit. In addition to posting the team’s highest plus/minus against UCLA and second-highest against Nebraska, the Warren native and Gill St. Bernard’s alum was a valued voice in the huddle. No one in a Rutgers uniform has won more college basketball games – Princeton went 70-21 during his three seasons there, including NCAA Tournament triumphs over Arizona and Missouri.

The way Rutgers dissected Nebraska felt awfully familiar to him.

“A lot of the (offensive) actions are not that different between Princeton and Rutgers, but at Princeton we had one guy transfer out in my four years there,” Martini explained. “At Rutgers we have nine new guys on this team this year. It’s still a work in progress, but the off-ball spacing is finally clicking. Setting screens for each other, knowing where to pass out of the double-team – we’re finally getting the hang of it.”

As much as Martini would love to binge-watch David Lynch’s catalogue right now, his focus is on game film – and he’s noticed a difference in the film room as Rutgers (10-8 overall, 3-4 Big Ten) is figuring things out.

“When you watch film of these games and you start celebrating someone making the extra pass or celebrating someone passing out of a double team,” he said, “everyone starts to realize how important those things are and how they translate to winning.”

While every night is tough in the Big Ten, and no one should be alarmed that they dropped games to Michigan State, Oregon, and Illinois, they have struggled mightily in the process, especially on defense. I think Rutgers can once again post 80 points, and it is hard to imagine that Penn State can cover this spread if their defense allows that kind of outing from the Scarlet Knights. Give me the road team and the points in this spot.
