  • Jennifer Lopez and Producers Ben Affleck, Matt Damon ‘Cared About Us as People,’ Says “Unstoppable”’s Anthony Robles (Exclusive)

Anthony Robles worked with a group of Hollywood’s starriest filmmakers to turn his life story into the new movie Unstoppable.

Born with one leg and a 2011 NCAA championship winner, Robles, 36, is played by Jharrel Jerome in the biopic based on his 2013 memoir, while Jennifer Lopez plays his mother Judy. Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña and Don Cheadle also star. As Robles tells PEOPLE, “It’s a star-studded cast.”

The same can be said for the behind-the-camera crew. Along with William Goldenberg, whom Robles calls “an amazing director,” Unstoppable came to life thanks to producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon through their production company Artists Equity.

“Ben and Matt, they made it a point to include my family through everything,” says the former wrestler, who launched his wrestling career from humble beginnings in his hometown of Mesa, Arizona. Depicted in the movie are the highs and lows of Robles’ years at Arizona State University as he and his four half-siblings endured a difficult relationship with their mother’s husband.

“I stand by what we showed in that film,” says Robles, who prioritized “accuracy” as producer, consultant and Jerome’s stunt double in wrestling scenes.

It was the filmmakers determined to tell his story authentically who helped him achieve that goal. “It was cool just to see how fired up [Affleck] was about the whole process,” he recalls.

Robles’ family members, he says, “were just grateful for how much care and attention that everyone showed, beginning with Billy, all the way to Jharell and Jennifer. They cared about our input, our insight, and just our concerns.”

He adds, “It’s one thing for them to be excited about telling our story, but they really just cared about us as people.”

During filming, the cast and crew spent time with the Robles family in Arizona. “To see Jennifer and my mom just spending hours talking, and Jennifer really opening up to her and sharing things about her life — they bonded,” he says. “Same thing with Jharrel and I. It was really more of an organic friendship that we were just able to build together, separately, to trust and to open up about those things.”

With Unstoppable on the page, big screen and now streaming, Robles hopes his tale of overcoming the odds inspires others. “The story itself is something I’m proud of and that’s special to me,” he says.

“I want everyone to relate to the fact that we all wrestle with a challenge. It can be a physical challenge, it could be mental, it can be relationships. There’s always going to be an opponent in your life that you face. It doesn’t matter what background you have, everyone understands that.”

Unstoppable is now streaming on Prime Video.

In a recent interview, Anthony Robles, the star of the upcoming film “Unstoppable,” praised Jennifer Lopez and producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for their genuine care and support for the cast and crew.

Robles, who plays a key role in the inspirational sports drama, shared that working with Lopez, Affleck, and Damon was a truly rewarding experience. He emphasized that they went above and beyond to ensure the well-being of everyone involved in the production.

“They truly cared about us as people, not just as actors on set,” Robles said. “Their kindness, generosity, and compassion made the filming process so much more enjoyable and meaningful.”

“Unstoppable” tells the story of Robles, a wrestler who overcame incredible odds to become a champion despite being born with only one leg. The film highlights his resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in himself.

  • Biden pardons five people including late civil rights leader Marcus Garvey

    Generate Key Takeaways

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden pardoned five people on Sunday, including the late civil rights leader Marcus Garvey, and commuted the sentences of two, the White House said in a statement.

Garvey, who died in 1940, was a civil rights leader who was convicted of mail fraud in 1923 and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, a sentence that was commuted by President Calvin Coolidge in 1927.

Human rights organizations credit Garvey as the first man to organize a mass movement among African-Americans. The White House said he created Black Star Line shipping company and founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, which celebrated African history and culture.

The other people pardoned include Darryl Chambers, a gun violence prevention advocate who was convicted of a non-violent drug offense, immigration advocate Ravidath “Ravi” Ragbir, who was convicted of a non-violent offense in 2001, the White House said in a statement.

Biden also pardoned Don Leonard Scott, who was convicted of a non-violent drug offense in 1994 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Scott was elected to the Virginia state legislature in 2019 and became its first Black speaker last year, the White House said.

Kemba Smith Pradia, a criminal justice advocate who was previously convicted of a non-violent drug offense in 1994, also was pardoned.

Biden commuted the sentences of two others who were sentenced in the 1990s and whom he credited with remarkable rehabilitation: Robin Peoples and Michelle West.

In a historic move, President Joe Biden has granted pardons to five individuals, including the late civil rights leader Marcus Garvey. Garvey, a Jamaican-born activist and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, was convicted of mail fraud in 1923 and deported from the United States.

This pardon comes as a symbolic gesture to acknowledge Garvey’s contributions to the civil rights movement and his efforts to uplift and empower Black communities. Biden’s decision to pardon Garvey is seen as a step towards rectifying past injustices and honoring the legacy of a visionary leader.

In addition to Garvey, the four other individuals who received pardons from President Biden have not been publicly named. The White House has stated that these pardons are part of a broader effort to address systemic injustices and promote equality and justice for all Americans.

This historic gesture has been met with praise from civil rights activists and advocates, who see it as a meaningful step towards recognizing and honoring the contributions of those who have fought for justice and equality. As we continue to strive towards a more just and equitable society, gestures like these serve as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and learning from our past.

Good morning! A high of 36 today with a chance of snow showers after 10 AM, and a low of 26 overnight. The Caps will try to make it three in a row in Ottawa at 7 PM, and the Wizards play Phoenix at home. I am disappointed that the Lewis Hamilton x Sofia Vergara rumors are already fizzling out, you can find me on Bluesky, and there’s a link to my email address at the bottom of this post.

    I can’t stop listening to:

Lucy Dacus‘s new single, “Ankles.” The line “Pull me by my ankles to the edge of the bed” is certainly memorable, but the references to crossword puzzles and tea land harder for me, as does the très chic video.

Here’s some Trump news you might have blocked out:

    • Via an email from the TrumpVance inaugural committee, the following musicians will perform at inaugural events: Carrie Underwood, Christopher Maccio, and Lee Greenwood at the swearing-in; Kid Rock, the Village People, Billy Ray Cyrus, Greenwood, and Liberty University’s Praise Choir at Sunday’s rally at Capital One Arena; Jason Aldean, the Village People, and a “Surprise musical guest” at the Liberty Ball; Rascal Flatts and Parker McCollum at the Commander-in-Chief Ball; and Gavin DeGraw at The Starlight Ball.

The couple next to me bailed at intermission, which gives you a good sense of the power of this squirm-in-your-seat work of thoughtful provocation from playwright Bruce Norris—and the toughest stuff doesn’t even arrive until the second act. The setting is a group home for sex offenders; obviously your reaction to the funny, sad, deeply unsettling events that unfold there will depend on your tolerance for discomfort. But as disturbing as it is, Downstate isn’t any kind of chore to sit through: I found it surprising and start-to-finish riveting.

  • Mark Cuban’s top career advice for young people: ‘Get paid to learn’

Mark Cuban advises young people to approach their careers the same way that many professional athletes do: like they’re free agents.

The self-made billionaire entrepreneur and minority owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks recently took to social media platform BlueSky to share his top piece of career advice for young professionals, responding to a post about college graduates feeling “locked into” a specific career path for the rest of their lives.

“I tell every kid that asks, that you paid money to learn. Now it’s time to get paid to learn,” wrote Cuban, 65. “You need to be the best as you can at your job … But you are always a free agent. You can always be looking and learn more in a new job.”

Cuban followed that advice to build his own career. In his 20s, he landed a job at a computer software sales company despite having only one computer science class under his belt — so he studied computer manuals to teach himself how the technology worked.

The self-education helped Cuban launch his first startup, a software company called MicroSolutions, about a year later. In 1990, he sold MicroSolutions to CompuServe for $6 million.

DON’T MISS: How to use AI to be more productive and successful at work

Highly successful people often share soft skills like curiosity and an eagerness to learn, according to CEOs from Amazon’s Andy Jassy to Kickstarter’s Everette Taylor. Just be careful thinking of yourself as a constant free agent in the job market, says Patrice Williams Lindo, CEO of career consulting firm Career Nomad.

If you interpret “free agent” as constantly having one foot out the door, always looking for your next opportunity, you’ll struggle to perform well at your current job and foster workplace relationships that could pay dividends later in your career, Lindo says.

“Relationships matter. While staying open to opportunities is smart, being a ‘free agent’ doesn’t mean neglecting the importance of building trust, collaboration and loyalty within your current role,” says Lindo. “These relationships are often the gateway to future opportunities.”

Plus, constant job-hunting can “lead to burnout, or prevent individuals from fully immersing themselves in their current work,” she adds.

Instead of always looking for a new, better opportunity, try to focus on “staying relevant in a rapidly changing job market,” Lindo says. “Professionals should prioritize continuous learning and growth. Cuban’s focus on ‘getting paid to learn’ is especially valuable — every role should offer opportunities to build skills, expand your expertise, and increase your market value.”

Mark Cuban’s Top Career Advice for Young People: ‘Get Paid to Learn’

Mark Cuban, billionaire entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, is known for his straightforward and practical advice when it comes to success in business. One of his key pieces of advice for young people starting their careers is to “get paid to learn.”

Cuban believes that the best way to advance in your career and gain valuable experience is to seek out opportunities where you can learn on the job and get paid for it. Whether it’s through internships, entry-level positions, or apprenticeships, Cuban encourages young people to prioritize learning and growth in their careers.

By taking on roles that challenge you, push you out of your comfort zone, and allow you to develop new skills, you not only increase your value as an employee but also set yourself up for long-term success. Cuban emphasizes the importance of being proactive and seeking out opportunities to learn and grow, rather than waiting for them to come to you.

So, if you’re a young person starting out in your career, take Mark Cuban’s advice to heart and focus on getting paid to learn. Seek out roles that will challenge and stretch you, and don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things. By prioritizing learning and growth early on, you’ll set yourself up for a successful and fulfilling career in the long run.

  • Steve Spurrier rips people who criticized Kirby Smart during 2024 season

Georgia finished the 2024 season 11-3 overall as the SEC champions despite falling short of their national championship goals.

It’s the first three-loss season since 2018, and are now two seasons removed from their consecutive national championships. When the Bulldogs’ lost 23-10 to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, it led to some criticism on social media directed toward head coach Kirby Smart, which Steve Spurrier believes is unfair.

“He won the SEC this year,” Spurrier, who has six SEC championship under his belts along with a national championship in 1996, said on Monday during Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “There are two goals when you’re in the SEC — you want to win your conference, and then if you’re fortunate, then you want to win the national [championship].

“Kirby [Smart] won the SEC. I remember Kirby saying that it may be harder to win the SEC than it is the national, because you’ve got to go through the SEC.”

Spurrier noted that it’s not uncommon to have the SEC Championship feature a rematch between two teams who met in the regular season. This year, it happened to be Georgia and Texas.

He also touched on the arguement that was made during the season about whether teams would even want to compete in the SEC Championship game given the new format for the College Football Playoff. A loss would add an extra game to the loses their schedule with a first-round playoff game while the other enjoys a first-round bye. Some believe this way of thinking diminishes winning a conference title.

Spurrier pushed back against this notion, praising Smart and Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian for their attitude toward the game in December.

“Winning the SEC is quite an accomplishment,” Spurrier continued. “… I mean, look around. Since 1990 Ole Miss has never won one. Lane Kiffin was worried about his guys getting hurt if they played in the SEC Championship. It doesn’t make sense, but Kirby [Smart] looked forward to it, and so did Texas. [Steve Sarkisian], he looked forward to winning the SEC.

“It’s amazing that all the other coaches would not have that attitude. … But conference championships are really, really important, in my opinion.”

Whether the perception of conference championships in relation to the CFP shifts in the future remains to be seen, but Spurrier remains firm in his belief that the SEC title specifically is one of the most coveted trophys a team can win during the football season.

Former University of Florida and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier did not hold back when addressing those who criticized Georgia head coach Kirby Smart during the 2024 college football season.

In a recent interview, Spurrier expressed his frustration with the backlash Smart received from fans and media members, despite leading the Bulldogs to another successful season. Spurrier defended Smart’s coaching abilities and praised his leadership on and off the field.

“Kirby Smart is one of the best coaches in the country, and it’s ridiculous to see people questioning his abilities,” Spurrier said. “He has consistently produced winning teams and has earned the respect of his players and colleagues. Those who criticize him don’t understand the game of football.”

Spurrier went on to say that Smart’s track record speaks for itself, with multiple SEC championships and playoff appearances under his belt. He also commended Smart for his dedication to developing young talent and creating a winning culture at Georgia.

“Kirby Smart is a true leader and a mastermind when it comes to coaching football,” Spurrier added. “Anyone who doubts his abilities clearly doesn’t know what they’re talking about. I have no doubt that he will continue to lead Georgia to success in the years to come.”

Spurrier’s passionate defense of Kirby Smart serves as a reminder that even the most successful coaches can face criticism, but it takes a true football mind to recognize and appreciate their accomplishments.

  • People are getting texts about unpaid Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls again. Here’s how to tell it’s a scam.

A text message scam that first appeared in April has resurfaced claiming drivers owe money for unpaid tolls.

Adding to the confusion, it comes just weeks after the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s switch to open road tolling. But turnpike officials say customers will never get texts from the agency about payments.

The text typically includes a balance amount and a link to click on to pay it. Officials for toll agencies in PennsylvaniaNew Jersey, Delaware and across the country warn these texts are from scammers.

RELATED: Pennsylvania Turnpike officials warn about text message scam targeting financial information

This type of scam is known as “smishing” – SMS phishing – where fraudsters target your personal and banking information through phony texts.

Reports of bogus text messages have increased this week, officials with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and Delaware Department of Transportation said. The agencies warned you should not click any link if you receive a text or email message like that saying it’s from E-ZPass or another toll agency.

The phony unpaid toll texts first started circulating last spring. The agency said the texts are not the result of a data breach of turnpike data and customer information has been and remains safe.

“These are just bad actors who are getting a bunch of random numbers and are sending the messages out hoping to try to lure someone and to get their data directly,” Crispin Havener, a turnpike spokesperson, said.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) also issued warnings after drivers reported receiving texts purporting to be from DriveEZMD and EZDriveMA.

E-ZPass and Toll By Plate customers can use approved safe methods to check their accounts, including the official PennsylvaniaNew Jersey, or Delaware E-ZPass websites or the Toll Pay apps available from the Apple App Store or Google Play store

Red flags to spot the scam

Typically these scam texts have several red flags indicating they’re not legit. One text shared with CBS News Philadelphia includes a scam link impersonating EZDriveMA, but the message was sent from a phone number starting with a +63, which is the country code for the Philippines.

Scam texts may also have misspellings or awkward grammar. If the message includes alarming, threatening, or urgent language, the PA Turnpike says it’s also likely a scam.

“Resist the pressure to act immediately. Honest businesses will give you time to make decisions when it comes to financial matters,” the agency said on its website. “Anyone who pressures you to pay or give them your personal information immediately is most likely a scammer.”

It remains unclear how and why certain people are being contacted, but “targeted phone numbers seem to be chosen at random and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads,” North Carolina’s Department of Transportation previously warned.

How to know an unpaid toll text is real

If you do ever have an outstanding toll balance you will get multiple letters in the mail first.

The PA Turnpike said it will never text E-ZPass or Toll By Plate customers about unpaid tolls, but that it does work with two debt collection agencies that will text customers who have “significant overdue balances.”

These legitimate texts will come from either Harris and Harris or TSI and will include the driver’s name, company information, and details relating to your account.

Customers who get a fraudulent message can report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov/.

Have you recently received a text message claiming you have unpaid tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike? If so, you’re not alone. Scammers are once again targeting unsuspecting individuals with this common tactic. But don’t be fooled – here’s how to tell if it’s a scam:

    1. Check the sender: Legitimate communications from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will come from a verified source, such as E-ZPass or the PA Turnpike. If the sender looks suspicious or unfamiliar, it’s likely a scam.

    2. Look for spelling and grammar errors: Scammers often make mistakes in their messages, including spelling and grammar errors. If the text contains these errors, proceed with caution.

    3. Don’t click on any links: Scammers will often include links in their messages that, when clicked, can lead to malware or phishing sites. Avoid clicking on any links in the text message.

    4. Contact the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission directly: If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of the text message, contact the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission directly to verify if you have any unpaid tolls.

Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to potential scams. Stay vigilant and protect yourself from falling victim to fraudsters.
