  • Mavs Reportedly Seek Impact Perimeter Defender, Make Gafford Available

The Mavericks, who remain on the look for an impact perimeter defender, have dangled center Daniel Gafford in those talks, according to Christian Clark of The Athletic.

Clark first reported at the start of the month that Dallas was exploring the idea of pursuing a player who could upgrade the club’s perimeter defense. He mentioned Pelicans forward Herbert Jones at that time, but acknowledged that New Orleans was unlikely to move him.

Jones is now out indefinitely with a shoulder ailment, but prior to that injury, the Pelicans’ asking price for him was “extraordinarily high,” according to Clark, who doesn’t identify any other specific players the Mavs may be eyeing, noting that the options available on the trade market for a needle-moving impact defender may be limited.

Still, Clark’s suggestion that Dallas is open to making Gafford available is noteworthy. The Mavs gave up a late 2024 first-round pick for the veteran big man at last season’s deadline and he helped the team make a run to the NBA Finals, starting all 21 playoff games in the spring.

As effective as Gafford has been since arriving in Dallas, he’s essentially a backup center, averaging a modest 20.0 minutes per game this season as he has taken a back seat to rising second-year big man Dereck Lively. Gafford is contributing 11.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per night, with a .706 FG%. The Mavs have a -2.0 net rating in his minutes, compared to a +8.1 mark when Lively is on the floor.

It’s also worth mentioning that if Dallas needs to aggregate contracts to acquire a player earning $20MM or more, Gafford’s $13.4MM cap hit could be useful. Outside of Maxi Kleber ($11MM), every other Maverick earning above $4MM is a regular part of the rotation when healthy.

Gafford is under contract for one season beyond 2024/25, with a $14.4MM guaranteed salary for ’25/26. He’s currently back in the Mavs’ starting lineup while Lively recovers a right ankle sprain, which will sideline him again on Friday vs. Oklahoma City.

According to recent reports, the Dallas Mavericks are actively seeking an impact perimeter defender to bolster their defense for the upcoming season. The team is reportedly looking to improve on the defensive end, particularly on the perimeter, where they struggled at times last season.

In order to acquire a top-tier defender, the Mavericks are said to be making center Daniel Gafford available in trade talks. Gafford, who was acquired by the Mavericks in a trade last season, has shown promise as a rim protector but may be expendable in order to address the team’s defensive needs on the perimeter.

With a talented core led by Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, the Mavericks are looking to build a stronger defensive identity to complement their potent offense. By targeting an impact perimeter defender, the team hopes to improve their chances of making a deep playoff run in the highly competitive Western Conference.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Mavericks’ pursuit of a defensive upgrade as the NBA offseason progresses.

  • Cavaliers interested in Nets’ Cam Johnson to address perimeter struggles: Sources

OKLAHOMA CITY — When the Cleveland Cavaliers lose this season like they have in blowouts Sunday to the Indiana Pacers and Thursday night’s debacle to the Thunder, the opponent wields distinct advantages in size and physicality on the perimeter.

The Cavs are still tied for the best record in the NBA, but are, nonetheless, trying to fix this recurring problem.

Executives from three franchises told The Athletic that Cleveland has expressed interest in acquiring 6-foot-8 forward Cam Johnson from the Brooklyn Nets — one of the most coveted players league-wide in the trade market — with the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline fast approaching.

League sources with knowledge of Cleveland’s internal discussions say Johnson has been discussed as a potential target and say the franchise has done its due diligence in inquiring about the availability of Johnson. Rival team officials, however, believe the Cavs’ interest to be more serious than that.

Johnson, 28, is averaging a career-high 19.6 points and shooting 43 percent from 3-point range. His combination of size, athleticism and shooting ability would seem to fit well in the Cavs’ otherwise potent offensive attack and mitigate some of the size disadvantages of starting two shorter (but All-Star caliber) guards in Darius Garland (6-2, 195 pounds) and Donovan Mitchell (6-3, 215).

Johnson is under contract for two more seasons after this and is earning $22.5 million for the 2024-25 season. Cleveland has no interest in trading any member of its core but could get to the money needed to match Johnson’s salary without disrupting its top eight players. The Cavs have a trove of second-round picks to offer but can’t trade a first-round pick until 2031.

The Cavs’ 134-114 loss to the Thunder was only the latest, but perhaps starkest, example of how teams built with length on the perimeter tend to smother them.

Luguentz Dort, a tenacious defender who is 6-4 and 220 pounds, frustrated Mitchell for the second consecutive game. Mitchell shot just 3 of 15 Thursday and was 6 of 31 in the two games between Cleveland and OKC in the last eight days. Dort also bombed his way to 22 points on six 3s.

Jalen Williams, who is 6-6 and 220 pounds, produced three steals and two blocks in addition to his 19 points. Alex Caruso, who is 6-5, added three steals off the bench, and of course, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, an MVP candidate, is a 6-6 point guard who glided his way to 40 points with two steals. The Cavs were forced into a season-worst 21 turnovers and shot 13 of 42 from 3-point range, well below their usual success rate.

“They’re long, kind of to your point,” Garland said, acknowledging the issue. “They’re always in the gaps defensively. … We have to bring the force.”

The Cavs started Dean Wade on the wing against the Thunder, who is 6-9 and is shooting 36 percent from 3-point range, but he is perhaps more suited coming off the bench as a stretch four. Isaac Okoro is 6-5 and has been in and out as a starter on the wing for the last few seasons. Wade contributed six points Thursday and Okoro shot 2 of 9 for seven points off the bench.

On Sunday in a 15-point loss to the Pacers, Andrew Nembhard and Bennedict Mathurin (who are 6-5 and 6-6, respectively) suffocated the Cavs in the second half. Cleveland lost twice to the Hawks in November, struggling mightily against Dyson Daniels (6-8) and Jalen Johnson (6-9). The Cavs’ first loss, after 15 consecutive wins to start the season, was against two wings you may have heard of — Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

And in a December loss to the Heat, Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler, Haywood Highsmith and Duncan Robinson are all taller than Cleveland’s guards. But it’s not just the height — it’s the opponent’s physicality on the perimeter that has, in these instances, bothered the Cavs.

“That’s totally fair,” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said. “They can pressure our guards, they can take us out and take us off our spots, push us out and you know our penetration with their length. It’s kind of like the formula for great defenses in this league, but I agree with you, that’s been kind of the formula so far, and we’ve got to figure it out.”

Not only are the Cavs (34-6) still tied with the Thunder for the league’s best record, but they have been a dominant offensive team all season. They entered Thursday’s game with the top-rated offense in the NBA and the second-highest-rated offense in league history. They led the league in shooting and 3-point shooting, and have two bigs in Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley who are excellent at rolling to the rim.

So this isn’t a situation of trying to repair a broken offense or even to try and fill a gaping hole by acquiring a more athletic better-shooting wing to complement Mitchell and Garland. It would be more like trying to bolster an otherwise deep, complementary roster for the playoffs when the games slow and physicality increases — if the Cavs decide they want to break up the chemistry in their locker room at all. Their 15-0 start was one of the greatest in NBA history and as of last week, they were 32-4.

There is the matter of putting together an offer that is better than anything else the Nets receive. Or the players could try to solve the equation themselves.

“We’ve done it,” Mitchell said. “This isn’t a loss where we hang our heads or tuck our tail between our legs. We just have to continue to do it against constant pressure. We’ve done it. We just have to look at the film and be better.”

According to sources close to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team is showing interest in acquiring Brooklyn Nets’ sharpshooter Cam Johnson to help address their perimeter struggles. Johnson, known for his three-point shooting ability and versatility on the wing, could provide a much-needed boost to the Cavaliers’ offense.

The Cavaliers have been struggling to find consistent scoring from beyond the arc this season, ranking near the bottom of the league in three-point percentage. Adding someone like Johnson, who is shooting over 40% from three-point range this season, could help open up the floor for their other offensive weapons.

While the Nets may be hesitant to part ways with Johnson, who has been a valuable contributor off the bench for them, the Cavaliers are reportedly willing to offer a package of draft picks and young players to make a deal happen.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Cavaliers’ pursuit of Cam Johnson and how it could impact their perimeter game moving forward.

  • Lakers once again bested by Pistons, underscoring urgent perimeter needs

Lakers once again bested by Pistons, underscoring urgent perimeter needs

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers’ road loss to the Detroit Pistons in early November served as a cautionary tale of how wrong things could go if they didn’t have the right mentality.

The Lakers felt like they were unprepared for the Pistons’ force, speed and athleticism and let Detroit push them around before Los Angeles’ eventual late-game rally attempt came up short. It was the first time this season that the Lakers felt outplayed and outmuscled by a supposedly inferior opponent.

On Monday, the Lakers had their much-anticipated rematch with the Pistons nearly two months later. They were prepared — or so they said. But their 117-114 loss, which dropped them to 16-13 and seventh in the Western Conference, highlighted many of the same problems from the prior matchup. They were too slow, too small and too passive.

Los Angeles struggled to handle Detroit’s ball pressure and aggression and activity in passing lanes, leading to 20 Lakers turnovers. The Pistons capitalized on many of the mistakes, scoring 28 points off those miscues, and attempting 18 more shots.

It’s very hard to win in this league if you give the other team (18) more scoring opportunities than you did,” coach JJ Redick said. “That’s it. It’s hard to win.”

Austin Reaves, who led the team with six turnovers (double the amount of Anthony Davis, who was in second place with three) and was pickpocketed in the backcourt, took ownership of his miscues.

“They’re a really aggressive defensive team, and myself personally, I didn’t handle it well,” Reaves said.

Turnovers haven’t often been an issue for the Lakers this season. They rank eighth in turnovers per game and eighth in turnover percentage. The offense has generally been more organized under Redick, even though it has slipped over the past few weeks.

But there is a clear throughline in the Lakers’ five 20-plus turnover games this season, three of which have come over the past five games: They’ve been against athletic, physical opponents, including the Minnesota Timberwolves (twice), Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies.

The Lakers do not handle ball pressure, length and athleticism on the perimeter well, which brings up two of the needs the group has identified internally (as The Athletic reported last week): a big 3-and-D wing and a quick, athletic guard. Either one of those player archetypes would’ve helped against Detroit, which posed matchup issues with its backcourt of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey.

    GO DEEPER

Cade Cunningham impresses LeBron James in Pistons’ win: ‘They got a great one’

Cunningham was too big for the likes of Max Christie, Reaves and Cam Reddish, bumping them with his shoulder to create space for jumpers or en route to finishing in the paint. He had 20 points (albeit on 25 shots) and 10 assists. Ivey was a blur in transition and off the dribble within halfcourt actions, easily blasting past Reaves, Christie and Gabe Vincent. He added 18 points.

There was also an element of unseriousness to the Lakers’ performance, which can be a bad habit when they’re getting scored on or shots aren’t falling.

They didn’t just get the ball poked away or intercepted. Davis dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds. Reddish threw an outlet pass that went right to Malik Beasley at the 3-point line, giving the sharpshooter a wide-open 3-pointer.

The Pistons scored 24 more paint points and attempted 24 more shots in the paint, both figures that reflect how frequently they both got out in transition (in part due to Los Angeles’ turnovers) and were able to break down the Lakers’ defense in the halfcourt.

The turnovers and missed free throws (five overall, four by Davis) undermined what had been a bounce-back performance by the Lakers. They shot over 54 percent from the floor and made 14 3-pointers (at nearly 47 percent). They got to the free-throw line 25 times, both a reflection of their downhill proclivities and the Pistons’ physical defensive scheme.

James had his eighth triple-double of the season (28 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists) in one of his most efficient performances (10-of-16 shooting, 6-of-7 free-throw shooting and only two turnovers).

The next game the Lakers play will be their 30th of the season — the mark that vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka said he wanted to wait until before evaluating the team. The Pistons loss was a reminder that they need more athletic and physical players who can hang in these types of matchups. And James hinted that physicality isn’t something the Lakers can simply change on their own.

“We gotta be stronger. That’s all,” James said. “…We gotta do it as a team. We gotta help guys get open. When guys are pressuring the ball, you gotta help guys screen better. You gotta screen better. … You gotta use your triple-threat (position). When you have a live dribble, get guys up off you.

“It’s not something you can learn, though. You don’t learn to be more physical. It’s either in you or it’s not.”

The Los Angeles Lakers suffered another disappointing loss at the hands of the Detroit Pistons, further highlighting their urgent need for improved perimeter play. Despite having a talented roster led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers have struggled to defend against outside shooters and create scoring opportunities from beyond the arc.

The Pistons capitalized on the Lakers’ defensive weaknesses, knocking down key three-pointers and exploiting mismatches on the perimeter. This loss serves as a wake-up call for the Lakers organization, emphasizing the importance of addressing their perimeter needs before it’s too late.

Whether it’s through trades, free agency signings, or player development, the Lakers must prioritize improving their perimeter defense and outside shooting if they hope to compete for a championship this season. With the trade deadline approaching, time is running out for the Lakers to make the necessary adjustments and solidify their position as a top contender in the Western Conference.

As the Lakers once again fall short against the Pistons, it’s clear that changes need to be made in order to address their urgent perimeter needs and elevate their level of play. Only time will tell if the Lakers can make the necessary adjustments and bounce back from this setback.
