The horror scene in 2024 was dominated by Longlegs. Osgood Perkins’ occultist shocker became an instant genre classic – not just for its ‘Silence Of The Lambs goes to hell’ vibe, or that Nicolas Cage performance. It was also full of surprises, narrative and tonally, taking audiences on a wild ride. And with his imminent new film, Perkins is ready to take fans by surprise all over again. The Monkey – a loose Stephen King adaptation – is an absurdist tale of death-by-toy-ape, one that aims to take the undercurrent of dark humour in Longlegs and bring it to the fore. Oh, and it’s going to be seriously gory.
“If you’re going for comedy then you’re going for extremes. Not subtlety,” Perkins tells Empire of where he’s landed with The Monkey. “We are guilty of putting far more blood in our human bodies than is really in a human body. When someone explodes in this movie — and a couple of people do — there’s a lot of mess.” Ah yes, the mess. Because The Monkey – like all good comedies – is all about the absurdity, the pointlessness, the randomness of death, the film looking to deal out the darkest fates with an almost cartoonish abandon. “All the death set-pieces were hard to do,” Perkins says. “They all have a Rube Goldbergian connectivity — this happens, then this happens, then this happens…”
The result might not be exactly what audiences are expecting after Longlegs. But that’s exactly what Perkins was aiming for. “I honestly feel fucking great about [how different The Monkey is from Longlegs],” he explains. “I can’t think of another morbidly surreal horror comedy that’s also heartwarming and redemptive and stars a bona-fide movie hunk. That’s the best news I can offer to people who liked Longlegs — we make all kinds. Why would anyone want to be fed the same meal every day?” Dinner’s up, gore-heads.
Read Empire’s full feature on The Monkey – getting the full story on Osgood Perkins’ wild follow-up to Longlegs – in the 28 Years Later issue, on sale Thursday 16 January. Pre-order a copy online here. The Monkey comes to UK cinemas from 21 February.

Theo James is making his horror debut — and he’s already dripping with blood.
The “White Lotus” and “Time Traveler’s Wife” teams up with his fellow Warner Bros. staple James Wan, who produces Osgood Perkins’ “The Monkey.”
More from IndieWire
James plays twins Bill and Hal, who discover their dad’s old monkey toy in the attic. The official logline simply reads: “When twin brothers find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tear their family apart. Twenty-five years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree forcing the estranged brothers to confront the cursed toy.”
The full synopsis is still elusive, but a clip was shared to tease the haunting horror feature.
“The Monkey” is based on Stephen King‘s 1980 short story of the same name. Perkins wrote and directed the adaptation, which also stars Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy.
“The Monkey” is Perkins’ latest Neon film after making history at the company with the highest-grossing film released by the distributor with “Longlegs.” The feature even surpassed Neon’s Best Picture winner “Parasite” at the box office. Perkins already has a third film set at Neon, but details remain under wraps. “Longlegs” was Perkins’ first feature with the distributor.
Perkins told The Hollywood Reporter that “The Monkey” is his most comedic feature yet.
“It’s feeling more like an old John Landis movie or a Joe Dante movie or a Robert Zemeckis movie,” Perkin said. “I saw an opportunity to make a wry, absurdist comedy about death. It’s about the very basic fact that we all die — and how f*cking funny and weird and impossible and surreal is that shit? And to come at it from a tragicomedy kind of voice felt like it fit.”
He added, “At the end of the day, if you want to reduce it, it’s the haunted toy or evil toy subgenre, and I couldn’t imagine doing a serious one of those. To me, it rang utterly false to approach it that way, so I just went in the other direction.”
“The Monkey” is produced by James Wan, Dave Caplan, Michael Clear, Chris Ferguson, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones. The film is Perkins’ first feature since “Longlegs” became Neon’s highest-grossing movie ever and one of the top-grossing horror movies of 2024.
“The Monkey” premieres February 21 in theaters from Neon.

HOUSTON — After LSU linebacker Harold Perkins announced last week he would return for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft, coach Brian Kelly said they are in the “early stages” of deciding what his role will be next year.
“Harold has a really good sense and feel for where he wants to be,” Kelly said. “I think we’re in alignment with that, but I think we’re going to kind of let that play out after we finish off the roster. And then I think it’ll be a lot clearer as to where that fits. It’s going to enhance who he is as a player.”
Perkins’ position has been a point of discussion throughout his career. He thrived as a freshman edge rusher, but LSU tried to develop him as an inside linebacker going into the past two seasons. Perkins was not as disruptive, and he moved around multiple times.
Kelly declined to discuss specifics of what Perkins would play next season in an interview Saturday night. But now that Perkins has decided to return, that will be an offseason focus while he recovers from a season-ending ACL injury suffered Sept. 21 in a win over UCLA.
“I feel like Perkins’ athletic ability, he can do whatever he wants on the field,” senior running back Josh Williams said. “It’s just more so what position he wants to play.”
Perkins would have been drafted if he left for the NFL, but his stock had dropped out of the first round. Coming back gives him the chance to establish himself as an early pick, and Kelly implied that LSU made it comparable financially with schools preparing to share revenue with players for the first time next year.
“Each player that makes decisions relative to whether they stay in college or go to the NFL has now other things that they can consider,” Kelly said. “I’m going to the NFL because financially it’s the best situation for me is no longer the only reason. Revenue sharing is right around the corner. It now becomes finishing off what you started, and I think Harold has a feeling as though he wants to finish the right way.
“He got his season cut short with an injury, and now he gets to have one more shot at it. In years past, you didn’t have that. You had to go where the finances led you. Now, he’s got revenue sharing and an opportunity to write the story that he wants to write.”
After Perkins broke out as a freshman with a team-high 13 tackles for loss and 7½ sacks, the past two years became about where he should play without the size of a prototypical NFL defensive end. He ended up at strongside linebacker most of his sophomore year, and he recorded 13 tackles for loss and 5½ sacks despite playing more snaps than he had the year before.
LSU spent the offseason working with Perkins as an inside linebacker going into the first year under defensive coordinator Blake Baker, but he moved to strongside linebacker again after a couple of weeks, replacing the Star position in Baker’s scheme. Perkins notched 17 tackles, 1½ tackles for loss and no sacks through four games before the injury.
Williams can relate to what Perkins has gone through the past three months. Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury during his freshman year in 2019. Having gotten to the other side of the recovery himself, he said Perkins “can come back even stronger than he was” next year.
“It gives you a lot of time to focus on that area, get stronger in the weight room, focus on the film study sessions,” Williams said. “Him and Whit (Weeks) and that linebacker position room, they’re going to take over the defense and be some dominant leaders.”
Since Perkins went down, senior linebacker Greg Penn said he has been around the facility “a lot” to rehab in the athletic training area. Perkins attended a couple of home games, and he met up with his teammates when they arrived at their hotel Friday for the Texas Bowl.
“The best is yet to come for him because he plays with aggression,” senior offensive lineman Miles Frazier said. “He plays with passion. He wants to take somebody’s head off, and I feel like now he’s got a chip on his shoulder with being hurt and coming through adversity. I feel like that’s going to make him more of a monster than he already was.”
LSU could have a productive linebacker corps next season. Although it will lose Penn, a three-year starter, Weeks emerged as a star with 119 tackles, the third-most in the SEC. Freshman Davhon Keys recorded 25 tackles while starting the last three games, and senior West Weeks will return after taking a redshirt. LSU also signed 4 four-star linebackers.
The rest of the defense will go through significant changes. LSU has to replace eight players who started more than half the games, including all four defensive linemen and three defensive backs. It has filled most of those holes with transfers, and now one of the most athletic defenders in the country will return.
“You add another player like Harold to that defense,” Kelly said, “and it gives Blake another weapon to do some things defensively that I think will only enhance who we are as a football team.”
LSU head coach Brian Kelly recently spoke about star linebacker Harold Perkins’ role on the team and the reasons behind his decision to return to LSU for another season. Perkins, a highly-touted recruit and standout player, had the option to enter the NFL Draft but ultimately chose to come back to the Tigers. In his comments, Kelly praised Perkins for his leadership on and off the field, as well as his exceptional talent as a linebacker. Kelly emphasized Perkins’ importance to the team’s defense and his ability to make game-changing plays.
When discussing Perkins’ decision to return to LSU, Kelly highlighted the strong bond that Perkins has with his teammates and the desire to compete for a national championship. Kelly also mentioned the opportunity for Perkins to continue to develop and improve his skills at the college level before making the leap to the NFL.
Overall, Brian Kelly’s comments on Harold Perkins shed light on the linebacker’s crucial role on the LSU team and the reasons behind his choice to return for another season. LSU fans can look forward to seeing Perkins make a significant impact on the field in the upcoming season.

Kendrick Perkins calls KAT-Julius Randle trade one of the worst in NBA history
Before Timberwolves snuck past the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day, the cast from the NBA on ESPN spent some time reviewing the early returns of the trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks and brought Julius Randle to Minnesota — and Kendrick Perkins had quite the take.
“Real talk. This trade by Minnesota could arguably go down as the worst trade in NBA history,” Perkins said.
Stephen A. Smith reacted with “come on, man, that’s a bit hyperbolic.” Perkins wasn’t backing down.
“You trade away a guy, one of the most skilled bigs, one of the best shooting bigs to ever play the game in Karl-Anthony Towns, that you just went to the Western Conference Finals with. Not only did you trade him away, you trade him away when he was in his prime. And you get back a guy in Julius Randle, who could go out there and get you 20 and 10, but he doesn’t complement Anthony Edwards well,” Perkins said.
“And so when you think about Anthony Edwards this season, he also attacked and went publicly for their offense. And everybody is wondering why is he shooting so many 3-point shots? Why is he not attacking the paint? How? When you have Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert on the floor at the same time, teams are going to play boxes and elbows, they’re going to load up on Anthony Edwards, they’re going to go under screens. Julius Randle does not fit with Anthony Edwards.”
While Randle’s fit can be debated all day long, there’s no denying that part of the reason Towns was traded was to help Minnesota get below the second apron of the NBA’s luxury tax, which comes with huge tax penalties and roster restrictions.
As for it being one of the worst trades in NBA history, that’s just bollocks.
One of the worst trades in NBA history was when the Clippers gave the Thunder Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Galinari and seven first-round picks for Paul George.
What about on draft night in 1998 when the Bucks selected Dirk Nowitzki only to ship him to Dallas for Robert Traylor? Ouch. And who could forget 1996 when the Hornets drafted Kobe Bryant before trading him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac.
The KAT trade hasn’t worked out yet for the Timberwolves and Towns is have a career-year in New York, but it’s way too early to put the blockbuster deal anywhere near the category of worst trades in NBA history.
In a recent interview, former NBA player Kendrick Perkins did not hold back when discussing the trade between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the New York Knicks that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle.Perkins called the trade “one of the worst in NBA history” and criticized both teams for their decision-making. He argued that Towns, a former All-Star and one of the best big men in the league, should not have been traded for Randle, who has had a mixed career and has not reached the same level of success as Towns.
Many fans and analysts have also expressed their disbelief at the trade, with some labeling it as a major mistake for both teams. Only time will tell if this trade will go down as one of the worst in NBA history, but for now, it has certainly sparked a heated debate among basketball fans.
