  • PETA proposes cake for Groundhog Day, instead of Punxsutawney Phil

PETA is proposing a “weather reveal” cake in place of groundhog Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day this year.

The organization, known for its animal advocacy, believes that Phil is being exploited on the annual winter holiday. In response, they sent a letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to let Phil retire ahead of this year’s celebration on February 2.

Instead of Phil, PETA has offered to send a vegan “weather reveal” cake, similar to a gender reveal cake, each Groundhog Day. The proposed cake when cut would show one of two colors: blue, signifying six more weeks of winter, or pink, indicating an early spring.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk explained her offer in the letter: “Retire Phil to a reputable sanctuary with his family, and every year we’ll provide a giant vegan ‘Weather Reveal’ cake (it would be the first in the world this year) to share with revelers at Gobbler’s Knob.”

“If the inside of the cake is blue, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it’s pink, there will be an early spring,” she added. “This would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency. It would be as least as accurate as asking a groundhog what to expect in a way that doesn’t even reflect his nature.”

She reiterated that they “batter believe” that Groundhog Day is no piece of cake for Phil.

“Groundhogs are shy prey animals who, when allowed, actively avoid humans,” she said. “Yet, year after year, Phil is transported to Gobbler’s Knob, whisked on stage, and subjected to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights against all his natural instincts.”

“If approached in his natural habitat, he would run away in fear, not volunteer to live year-round in captivity, unable to do anything that’s natural and important to him like hibernate or burrow—just to be a town’s once-a-year fake meteorologist,” she added.

This isn’t the first time PETA has tried to remove Phil from the festivities. In 2023, the group offered to replace him with an enormous, golden, weather-predicting coin.

“We’d be happy to send you a large thermometer for Gobbler’s Knob instead that reads, ‘If it’s still cold, it’s still winter,’ which would aptly represent the absurdity of the current form of this tired old spectacle. We look forward to hearing from you, as always,” Newkirk concluded in this year’s letter.

PETA’s Sweet Solution for Groundhog Day: Cake instead of Punxsutawney Phil

As Groundhog Day approaches, animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is proposing a new tradition to replace the age-old tradition of relying on Punxsutawney Phil to predict the arrival of spring. Instead of the groundhog seeing its shadow, PETA suggests celebrating with a delicious cake.

The idea behind this proposal is to shift the focus away from using animals for entertainment and instead promote a more compassionate and cruelty-free alternative. By enjoying a slice of cake on Groundhog Day, individuals can still partake in the festivities without exploiting an animal for our own amusement.

Not only is cake a tasty treat that can be enjoyed by all, but it also aligns with PETA’s mission of advocating for the ethical treatment of animals. Plus, who wouldn’t want to celebrate with a sweet treat?

So this Groundhog Day, consider swapping out Punxsutawney Phil for a scrumptious cake and join PETA in promoting kindness and compassion towards all living beings. Let’s make a new tradition that is both delicious and ethical.

  • PETA suggests ‘weather reveal’ cake for Groundhog Day to retire Punxsutawney Phil

PETA suggested that Groundhog Day be celebrated with a “weather reveal” cake instead of pulling Punxsutawney Phil out of his whole to determine six more weeks of winter or if spring will arrive early.

The organization, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, shared their idea in a news release on Jan. 21 saying they would deliver a vegan cake each Groundhog Day if club president Tom Dunkel agreed to let Phil retire to a sanctuary.

“If the inside of the cake is blue, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it’s pink, there will be an early spring,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in her letter to Dunkel. “This would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency. It would be as least as accurate as asking a groundhog what to expect in a way that doesn’t even reflect his nature.”

Newkirk went on to point out that groundhogs are shy prey animals who actively avoid humans when allowed and called out the Groundhog Club for subjecting Phil “to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights against all his natural instincts.”

It isn’t the first year PETA has attempted to retire Punxsutawney Phil.

In 2024, the group offered to replace the groundhog with a giant gold coin, while in 2022 they suggested officials predict the weather with persimmon seeds.

The annual Groundhog Day celebration is scheduled to take place in Pennsylvania on Feb. 2.

Phil predicted an early spring in 2024 after not seeing his shadow.

PETA Suggests ‘Weather Reveal’ Cake for Groundhog Day to Retire Punxsutawney Phil

As Groundhog Day approaches, animal rights organization PETA has come up with a unique suggestion to retire Punxsutawney Phil and put an end to the tradition of predicting the weather based on a groundhog’s shadow.

Instead of relying on a frightened rodent to determine whether we will have an early spring or six more weeks of winter, PETA is proposing the use of a “weather reveal” cake. The cake would be designed to look like a groundhog emerging from its burrow, with the color of the cake inside revealing the weather forecast for the upcoming weeks.

Not only would this alternative method be more humane and ethical, but it would also add a fun and delicious twist to the Groundhog Day festivities. Plus, who wouldn’t want to celebrate with a slice of cake regardless of the weather forecast?

So, let’s retire Punxsutawney Phil and embrace a new tradition with a ‘weather reveal’ cake on Groundhog Day. Let’s make this holiday both enjoyable and respectful to animals.

  • PETA Wants to Replace Punxsutawney Phil with ‘Weather Reveal’ Cake on Groundhog Day

PETA is calling for a change to Groundhog Day.

The organization — which stands for “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” — shared a news release on Jan. 21, in which they suggested that Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who predicts whether winter will go on for six more weeks or spring will arrive early, should be replaced with a “weather reveal” cake.

The vegan treat, PETA said, would mimic that of a sex reveal for a baby. Once cut, the cake would show one of two colors: blue, meaning six more weeks of winter, or pink, indicating an early spring.

The animal rights advocates added that Punxsutawney Phil and his family should “retire to a reputable sanctuary” instead of taking part in the annual tradition, which takes place on Feb. 2.

In a letter to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s president, Tom Dunkel, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk used puns to convey the organization’s plea, writing that letting Punxsutawney Phil retire and be replaced by the cake “would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency.”

Continuing the play on words, Newkirk said, “Groundhog Day is no piece of cake” for Punxsutawney Phil, detailing that “groundhogs are shy prey animals who, when allowed, actively avoid humans.”

“Yet, year after year, Phil is transported to Gobler’s Knob, whisked on stage, and subjected to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights against all his natural instincts,” she continued.

Added Newkirk: “If approached in his natural habitat, he would run away in fear, not volunteer to live year-round in captivity, unable to do anything that’s natural and important to him like hibernate or burrow — just to be a town’s once-a-year fake meteorologist.”

PETA has made similar offers to replace Punxsutawney Phil in years past.

In 2024, the group asked The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to retire the rodent in favor of a giant coin, while they suggested in 2022 that officials instead use a persimmon tree to predict the weather.

Two years earlier, in 2020, PETA argued that the animal should be swapped out for an animatronic version that would be equipped with artificial intelligence capable of more accurately predicting the weather.

Last year, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring over more weeks of winter.

Every year on February 2nd, people eagerly await the prediction of Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog who determines whether we will have six more weeks of winter or an early spring. However, animal rights organization PETA is proposing a new and more animal-friendly tradition for Groundhog Day.

PETA is suggesting that instead of relying on Punxsutawney Phil, we should turn to a “Weather Reveal” cake. This cake would be made with ingredients that are not harmful to animals and would be decorated with symbols representing different weather patterns. At the stroke of midnight on Groundhog Day, the cake would be cut open to reveal a prediction for the upcoming season.

PETA believes that this new tradition would be a more ethical and humane way to celebrate Groundhog Day, without putting pressure on a captive animal like Punxsutawney Phil. They argue that using a cake for weather prediction is just as fun and exciting, while also promoting animal welfare.

While the idea of replacing Punxsutawney Phil with a “Weather Reveal” cake may seem unconventional, it is a creative and compassionate alternative that aligns with PETA’s mission to protect animals. Perhaps it’s time for a change in how we celebrate Groundhog Day, and this cake could be just the thing to bring a new twist to this age-old tradition.

  • PETA calls to end Groundhog Day tradition, retire Punxsutawney Phil with cake alternative

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is calling to ax a beloved American tradition – and to replace it with what it calls a “delicious” vegan substitution.

The animal rights nonprofit organization is seeking to replace the Groundhog Day tradition with a vegan “weather reveal” cake. PETA announced the proposal in a news release on Jan. 20.

“PETA will deliver a delicious ‘Weather Reveal’ vegan cake each Groundhog Day in perpetuity if [the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club] agrees to let Punxsutawney Phil and his family retire to a reputable sanctuary, a move that will earn the outfit kudos from wildlife fans,” the press release stated.

PETA also published pun-filled letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, arguing that the groundhog’s annual duties were “no piece of cake” for him.

“Groundhogs are shy prey animals who, when allowed, actively avoid humans,” the letter detailed. “Yet, year after year, Phil is transported to Gobler’s Knob, whisked on stage, and subjected to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights against all his natural instincts.”

“If approached in his natural habitat, he would run away in fear, not volunteer to live year-round in captivity, unable to do anything that’s natural and important to him like hibernate or burrow – just to be a town’s once-a-year fake meteorologist.”

In a statement, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk also called for Groundhog Day officials to “sprinkle some happiness” into Phil’s life by letting him retire.

“When allowed to be themselves, groundhogs avoid humans, create intricate networks of underground burrows, communicate with one another, and even climb trees, but poor Phil is denied all of that for a tired old gimmick,” Newkirk argued.

PETA told Fox News Digital that it has not received a response from the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, and called for the organization to develop “kinder, innovative” traditions that make animals happy.

PETA SUGGESTS REPLACING PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL GROUNDHOG WITH GIANT GOLD COIN: ‘CRUEL ANNUAL GIMMICK IS ABUSIVE’

“Our letter suggests the groundhog club demonstrate true respect for Phil and set a wonderful example for how everyone can move beyond ‘Groundhog’ Day by replacing him with a delicious vegan ‘Weather Reveal’ cake that revelers can enjoy as an alternative to exploiting wild animals,” a spokesperson explained. “The time is long overdue.”

PETA has called for Groundhog Day alternatives in the past, including offering to send a giant gold coin to replace the animal in 2024.

Groundhog Day has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1887. Thousands of observers flock to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, every year on Feb. 2 to see Phil predict the weather.

Tradition dictates that if Phil sees his shadow at daybreak and runs away, six more weeks of winter will follow. However, if he has no shadow, spring will arrive sooner.

In 2024, Phil announced that he did not see his shadow, marking a rare prediction for an early spring.

Fox News Digital reached out to PETA and the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club for comment.

Fox News Digital’s Ashlyn Messier contributed to this report.

PETA, the animal rights organization, is calling for an end to the Groundhog Day tradition and for Punxsutawney Phil to be retired in favor of a cake alternative.

The organization argues that the annual tradition of pulling a groundhog out of its burrow to predict the weather is stressful and harmful to the animal. Instead, they suggest celebrating Groundhog Day with a cake that resembles Punxsutawney Phil, allowing people to enjoy the festivities without causing harm to wildlife.

PETA hopes that by retiring Punxsutawney Phil and replacing him with a cake alternative, the Groundhog Day tradition can continue in a more humane and compassionate way. Let’s hope that this proposal gains traction and that we can celebrate this holiday without causing harm to animals.
