Jeanne Manford is often referred to as the “Mother of a Movement” for her groundbreaking work as an ally and activist in the LGBTQ+ community. In 1973, Manford marched alongside her son in New York City’s Pride Parade, carrying a sign that read “Parents of Gays Unite in Support for Our Children.” This powerful display of parental love and acceptance inspired others to do the same, leading to the creation of PFLAG as a support network for parents and allies of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Throughout her life, Manford continued to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, speaking out against discrimination and working to educate others about the importance of acceptance and equality. Her tireless efforts helped to shift public attitudes and policies, paving the way for progress in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

Today, PFLAG has grown into a national organization with chapters across the country, providing support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.
