NPR sports correspondent Becky Sullivan has some tips for what to watch for in this year’s game:

A close, back-and-forth game: All signs point to a close game. The Eagles defense aims to limit big gains and force teams to beat them with small plays. But that’s exactly how the Chiefs like to win: Kansas City is 12-0 in one-score games this season. The Kansas City defense is no slouch either, and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has struggled at times when pressured.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes: The key to the Chiefs’ three-peat hopes is their 29-year-old quarterback who is great all the time but somehow even better in high-stakes moments: in the playoffs, on 3rd and 4th downs and on game-ending drives.

The tush push: The Eagles have become known for their unusually successful take on the quarterback sneak. Here are the physics behind the play.

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley: After Philadelphia signed him last spring, Barkley has blossomed into the game-changer he always had the potential to be. He became only the ninth player ever to rush for more than 2,000 yards in the regular season, and he has more 60-plus-yard touchdown runs in one season than any player ever.

And some pre-game bonuses: Keep an eye out for Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ arrival outfit, and whether this Chiefs player tears up during the National Anthem.

    Record-setting legal betting

A record $1.39 billion is expected to be spent on betting legally on Sunday’s Super Bowl — up from $1.25 billion in 2024, according to the American Gaming Association (AGA). It also coincides with warnings from officials to beware of scammers looking to take advantage of the intense interest in the game. Here are two reasons why this year could set a new record.

With the surge in sports betting, the risk of gambling addiction rises too. Here’s what can be done.

    “Choose Love”

The NFL has announced it will remove the end zone message “End Racism” for this year’s Super Bowl, replacing it with “Choose Love.”

Code Switch’s Gene Demby writes about how the change fits into broader discussion happening around DEI.

Despite last month’s terrorist attack, Tourism in New Orleans remains strong

Today’s New Orleans is built on — and would suffer greatly without — tourism. About 17 million people visited New Orleans in 2022, spending more than $9 billion. Much of that happened during Mardi Gras, which made the New Year’s Day attack especially concerning since it happened right before the start of the tourism season. But so far, a little more than a month removed from the incident, the tourists are still coming.

  • Suicide or homicide? Ellen Greenberg case getting new look by ME – NBC10 Philadelphia

Before a civil case could get underway Monday, the family of Ellen Greenberg and Philadelphia officials reached an agreement to reopen the teacher’s death investigation more than 14 years after she was found stabbed to death in her Manayunk apartment.

The settlement reached on Feb. 3, 2025, means that the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office will reopen and reinvestigate Greenberg’s manner of death.

The medical examiner who ruled Greenberg’s 2011 death a homicide, then later suicide, in recent days released a new legal verification stating that he now believes the case should be ruled as “something other than suicide.”

On Jan. 26, 2011, Ellen Greenberg was found dead by her fiancé in the kitchen of her apartment on Flat Rock Road in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood. The 27-year-old first-grade teacher had suffered 20 stab wounds.

Philadelphia Police and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office both investigated her death.

Philadelphia Medical Examiner Marlon Osbourne initially ruled her death a homicide, noting the large number of stab wounds, including 10 to the back of her neck. After police publicly challenged the findings, Osbourne switched the ruling to suicide without explanation.

In a statement filed on Friday, Jan. 31, Dr. Osbourne explained that he decided to make this change after reviewing additional information in her case file that he obtained from the Philadelphia Police Department as well as a consult from Dr. Lucy Rorke-Adams, who is a pediatric neuropathologist and who had worked at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Osbourne went on to write in his verification that he is now unsure of the series of events that happened that day. He wrote he didn’t know “whether the door was forced open as reported; whether Ellen’s body was moved by someone else inside the apartment with her at or near the time of her death; and the findings of Lindsey Emery, M.D., from her neuropathological evaluation of Ellen’s cervical segment sample.”

The statement came on the same day that a judge ruled that Dr. Osbourne must testify at the dismissed civil trial along with another medical examiner Sam Gulino and homicide detective John McNamee.

Over the past several years, Greenberg’s parents – Josh and Sandee Greenberg – have sought to have the ruling changed back to homicide and filed a lawsuit against Philadelphia. The city has objected, arguing that state law “makes clear that a medical examiner can be wrong as to the manner of death yet cannot be compelled to change it.”

“I’m hoping we’re going to prove that Ellen did not commit suicide,” Ellen’s father, Josh Greenberg, told NBC10 late last year. “That’s what this is all about. Justice for Ellen.”

In 2018, the investigation was turned over to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office for review. The investigation was then turned over to Chester County detectives in August 2022 in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Chester County detectives first conducted a review of the Philadelphia police and attorney general’s office investigations. They also conducted new interviews and consulted with an independent forensic expert.

Then in November 2024,  the Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced that they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed and the investigation was placed as inactive. Despite this, Greenberg’s parents – who currently live in Florida – have continued to fight to change the ruling of their daughter’s death while insisting she was murdered.

After Monday’s settlement, attorneys representing the city declined to comment. However, attorneys representing the Greenbergs said they were told the new review would be done expeditiously.

The mysterious death of Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old woman found dead in her Philadelphia apartment in 2011, is receiving a fresh examination by the Medical Examiner’s Office. Originally ruled a suicide by multiple stab wounds, the case has raised questions and suspicions among Greenberg’s family and friends, who believe foul play may have been involved.

The decision to reevaluate the cause of Greenberg’s death comes after years of public outcry and pressure from advocacy groups. The new investigation will include a review of forensic evidence, witness statements, and a deeper analysis of the crime scene.

Many are hopeful that a new perspective on the case will shed light on what truly happened to Ellen Greenberg on that fateful day. As the investigation unfolds, the question remains: Was it suicide or homicide?

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as NBC10 Philadelphia continues to cover the latest developments in the Ellen Greenberg case.

  • Black box found from medical jet that crashed in Northeast Philadelphia, NTSB says

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The cockpit voice recorder, commonly known as a ‘black box,’ has been recovered from the medical jet that crashed in Northeast Philadelphia.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Sunday evening that the box was found eight feet underground at the site of the impact.

The crash left a crater in the street, but sources tell Action News the black box was in “decent shape.”

Black boxes are key pieces of evidence after a plane crash, since they can potentially hold crucial data to help investigators from the NTSB understand what went wrong.

A small medical transport jet carrying a child and her mother along with four other people was in the air for less than a minute before coming down in a fiery crash.

The NTSB also said it has recovered the plane’s enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS), which could also contain flight data.

The components will be sent to the NTSB Vehicle Recorders Laboratory in Washington, D.C. for evaluation, officials said.

NTSB investigators have also recovered both engines. Wreckage recovery will continue on Monday, and all of the wreckage will be sent to a secure location in Delaware for further examination.

Investigators also continue to ask that videos or photos of Friday’s crash be sent to witness@ntsb.gov to help in the investigation.

Also on Sunday, the NTSB released new video of the scene where the jet hit the ground.

It shows the scale of the crater left behind by the impact. It also shows the scene around the crash, including several burned-out cars.

RAW VIDEO: The NTSB released video on Sunday that shows the site of the plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia from the ground and air.

We’ve also now learned the names of all six people
aboard the medical jet who perished when the plane crashed on Friday evening.

All of the victims on board the plane were from Mexico. The NTSB says Learjet 55 was traveling to Missouri before headed to Mexico when it crashed less than a minute after take-off, causing a massive explosion.

Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales and Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez have been identified as the pilot and co-pilot of the flight.

Paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla and Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo were also aboard the plane.

Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla and Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo have been identified as those on board the medical jet.

They were traveling with the pediatric patient, 11-year-old Valentina Guzman Murillo, and her mother, 31-year-old Lizaeth Murillo Osuna.

Valentina Guzman Murillo was in Philadelphia to receive care fromShriners Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

A person inside a car was also killed. That person has not yet been identified.

“Our city continues to mourn their loss and they are in our thoughts and prayers,” said Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker.

The city said Sunday the number of people injured rose to 22. Five of those people are still hospitalized, with another three in critical condition.

But local leaders say there could be more victims, so they’re urging residents to check on their neighbors.

“If there is somebody who you think may have been in this area, and they’re missing and they haven’t checked in, and you can’t reach them or they live there, call 911,” said the city’s managing director, Adam Thiel.

He said he joint investigation team consisting of local, state and federal partners remain on the ground to assist people and assess the damage.

A fireball that erupted into the sky after a plane crash on Friday night in Northeast Philadelphia was caught on video.

At least 11 residential properties are impacted.

“They have a lot of processing yet to do of the scene. We have not yet recovered everything we need to recover from the scene,” Thiel said.

Some lanes of the Roosevelt Boulevard have reopened in the area of the crash, with the roadway expected to be fully reopened by the morning rush on Monday.

Mayor Cherelle Parker said there will be a town hall meeting on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. where residents can get more information. However, the location for that town hall has not yet been determined.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has announced that a black box has been found from the medical jet that crashed in Northeast Philadelphia. The black box, also known as the flight data recorder, is a crucial piece of evidence that will help investigators determine what caused the tragic crash.

The medical jet was carrying a patient and three crew members when it went down in a field near Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The crash resulted in the deaths of all four individuals on board.

The NTSB is conducting a thorough investigation into the crash, looking at factors such as weather conditions, pilot experience, and mechanical issues. The discovery of the black box will provide valuable data that will help shed light on the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident. We hope that the findings from the investigation will bring some closure and answers to those affected by this devastating event.

  • Tyrese Maxey Makes Philadelphia 76ers History vs Nuggets

As the Philadelphia 76ers battled it out against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night, their star guard Tyrese Maxey moved up the team’s leaderboard in shooting from beyond the arc.

With six three-pointers made against the Nuggets, Maxey surpassed Kyle Korver.

He’s now chasing Robert Covington and Allen Iverson in most three-pointers made in team history.

Maxey accomplished that feat in a little over 300 games. Although he entered the NBA with a question mark surrounding his three-point shooting, Maxey erased all doubt by his sophomore season.

In year two, Maxey averaged 43 percent from three on four attempts per game. During his third season, he knocked down 43 percent of his shots from deep on six shots per game.

Last season, Maxey upped his attempts to eight per game. While his efficiency took a slight dip, he still managed to be 37 percent from three while averaging 26 points per game.

The 2024-2025 NBA season has seen another slight climb in attempts from deep for Maxey. However, a slow start to the year caused his percentage to take a notable drop.

Through 40 games, Maxey is averaging 34 percent from three. However, he’s been scoring at a career-high clip, averaging 28 points per game.

Maxey is now 58 threes away from surpassing Covington. The former Sixers forward achieved 724 threes made in 323 games with the 76ers.

The leader of the franchise, Allen Iverson, has nearly 220 more threes made than Maxey right now. Iverson accomplished that in over 700 games with the 76ers.

In a historic game against the Denver Nuggets, Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers put on a show that will be remembered for years to come. Maxey scored a career-high 39 points, becoming the youngest player in 76ers history to score that many points in a game.

Not only did Maxey light up the scoreboard, but he also displayed his all-around skills by adding seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals to his impressive stat line. His performance helped lead the 76ers to a dominant 123-104 victory over the Nuggets.

In addition to his scoring outburst, Maxey’s energy and hustle on both ends of the court were instrumental in the team’s success. He was relentless in attacking the basket, drawing fouls, and creating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.

With this historic performance, Tyrese Maxey has solidified himself as a rising star in the NBA and a key player for the Philadelphia 76ers. Fans can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next as he continues to make his mark on the league.

  • Avalanche Game 54 vs Philadelphia Flyers, Looking For Two Straight Wins, Lines, Notes & How to Watch

The Colorado Avalanche (30-21-2) play their last home game before the 4 Nations Faceoff against the Philadelphia Flyers (23-24-6) in a matinee matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:08 p.m. MT.

READ MORE: Rantanen Deal Signals Change: Why MacFarland Should Be Rewarded With Patience (+)

The Avs wanted to treat their last stretch of games before the break like it were the playoffs. Mission accomplished against the Blues on Friday. They shut them out 5-0 and imposed their will right from the opening draw.

They hope to continue that against the Flyers in their last game at Ball Arena until late February.  Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 19 saves against St. Louis, is back between the pipes looking to win two straight for the first time in a few weeks. He’ll likely be backed up by Trent Miner following Scott Wedgewood’s absence from Saturday’s practice.

Blackwood and the Avs haven’t strung together two consecutive victories since Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. They’ll get a big opportunity to do that against a team riding a two-game losing streak.

Martin Necas has been excellent in his first four games and scored against the Blues — his first goal with Colorado. The forward is riding a three-game point streak and has helped revive a struggling power play.

But he’s not the only new forward making his mark. Jack Drury, playing on a line with Ross Colton and Miles Wood, has been a pleasant surprise. He fits what the team does and gives them added depth in the bottom six. Drury has two goals in four games.

Not only have they lost two straight, but the Flyers enter this matchup without a goal in consecutive games. They lost 5-0 and 3-0 to the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders.

This will also be their first game since trading Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee to the Calgary Flames for Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier. Kuzmenko is a former KHL teammate of young forward Matvei Michkov. The two will be reunited, albeit in a John Tortorella system.

This will also be the second time that Erik Johnson returns to Ball Arena since leaving as a free agent in 2023. EJ has dressed in just 18 games this season but likely will play against the Avs.

  • Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs Philadelphia Flyers (1:00 p.m. MST)

The Avs come into this contest coming off of a dominating performance against the Blues, scoring four goals in the first period, including the first goal in an Avs sweater for Martin Necas in his home debut. The speed Necas plays with has meshed seamlessly in the Avs system so far, and a rapport with Nathan MacKinnon is quickly forming.

As for today, the recipe for success should look the same as it did on Friday night. The Avs weren’t afraid to shoot the puck, and were rewarded early and often on the scoresheet. The Blues simply could not keep up. With this being the final time the Avs will play on front of the Avs faithful until February 26th, the Avs should be ready to come out flying and put on another show for the fans.

Cale Makar and Scott Wedgewood were absent from practice on Saturday. Makar, who blocked a shot with his foot against the Dallas Stars on January 18th, has seemingly been managing that issue ever since, so this should be nothing more than maintenance for the Avs star defenseman.

Conversely, Wedgewood’s situation is a mystery. He has not appeared in game action in 8 days, last playing in Boston against the Bruins to open the Avs recent road trip. Additionally, Trent Miner was recalled from the Colorado Eagles yesterday, so the signs point towards Wedgewood being a scratch today.

As is the case with matinee affairs, the Avs won’t have a morning skate prior to the start of the game, so lineups will be confirmed in warmups.

    Projected Lineup

    Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Martin Necas (88)

    Jonathan Drouin (27) — Casey Mittelstadt (37) — Juuso Parssinen (16)

    Miles Wood (28) — Jack Drury (18) — Ross Colton (20)

    Joel Kiviranta (94) — Parker Kelly (17) — Logan O’Connor (25)

    Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)

    Samuel Girard (49) — Josh Manson (42)

  • 5 Things: Flyers @ Avalanche | Philadelphia Flyers

John Tortorella’s Philadelphia Flyers (23-24-6) are in Denver on Sunday afternoon to take on Jared Bednar’s Colorado Avalanche (30-21-2). Game time at Ball Arena is 3:00 p.m. EST.

The game will be televised on NBCSP+. The radio broadcast is on 93.3 WMMR with an online simulcast on Flyers Radio 24/7.

This is the second and final meeting of the season series between the inter-conference teams. At Wells Fargo Center on Nov, 18, the Avalanche prevailed by a 3-2 score.

Two goals in the second period by superstar defenseman Cale Makar put Colorado in the driver’s seat after the first 28 minutes of the game were scoreless. After Casey Mittelstadt opened a 3-0 lead in the middle stages of the third period, the Flyers made a comeback push but fell one goal short. Owen Tippett and Tyson Foerster scored in a losing cause.

Here are five things to watch in Sunday’s match.

    1. Get to the net

Over the last six games, the Flyers have been in a collective offensive drought. In five of the games, the team has scored either a single regulation goal or has been shut out. After a 4-2 home win against the Devils this past Monday, the Flyers were shut out byJersey (5-0) and the New York Islanders (3-0) in each of the past two games.

In the Islanders game, a would-be first period power play tally by Matvei Michkov was erased by a coach’s challenge for goaltender interference. Flyers assistant captain Scott Laughton said after the game that, beyond the disallowed goal, he thought New York goaltender Ilya Sorokin saw too many clear-sighted shots among his 24 saves.

When a team is struggling for goals, it helps to get back to the basics: get pucks and traffic to the net, don’t try to make the “perfect” play, and double down on puck support to minimize turnovers. Given how shorthanded the Flyers are in their available personnel for this game — especially against a top-flight opponent like the Avalanche — grinding out a couple ugly-but-good goals and prevailing in a low-scoring game is a near-must if the Flyers are to upset Colorado when all is said and done.

    2. All hands on deck

No two ways about it: The Flyers have a shorthanded lineup for this game. New acquisitions Jakob Pelletier and Andrei Kuzmenko — acquired in Thursday’s trade that sent Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost to the Calgary Flames — are not yet with the team. Owen Tippett (upper body injury) is on the road trip and possibly could play in Utah but remains unavailable for this game. Ryan Poehling (upper body) remains on injured reserve.

Rugged veteran Nicolas Deslauriers is ready to exit Injured Reserve and, once activated, will be available to play if Tortorella chooses to deploy him. Meanwhile, big framed 23-year-old center Jacob Gaucher is poised to make his NHL debut for the Flyers. At Saturday’s practice at the FTC in Voorhees, Gaucher centered a line with Deslauriers and Garnet Hathaway.

Prior to the last six games — over a period of 26 games between Nov. 25 and Jan. 28 — the Flyers scored at a 3.31 goals per game clip (4th leaguewide in that span). They did so through balanced offense across the lineup. Right now, with the time collectively struggling to score, Philly would welcome any line or individual forward or defenseman to step up offensively.

    3. Konecny with Cates

Saturday’s practice in Voorhees featured leading scorer Travis Konecny (21 goals, 37 assists, 58 points) on right wing with Noah Cates and Tyson Foerster. If there is one line for Philadelphia that is capable of delivering a big day in Denver, this line is the primary candidate to step up and deliver. Cates and Foerster have continued to take care of the little details on both sides of the puck that go into productive shifts.

However, the rewards haven’t been there lately. Cates has not recorded a point over the last six games. Foerster has one point (a goal against the New York Islanders) in his last six games. Frequent linemate Bobby Brink also posted one point (1g, 0a). It should be noted that Tortorella has juggled line combinations the last few games both due to injuries and a search for equilibrium.

Konecny has continued to compile assists in recent weeks. However, goals have notably been tough to come by since he careened into the end boards

in the Jan. 16 game against the Islanders. In the eight games since then, Konecny has scored once (an empty net goal against the Devils, assisted by Cates and Foerster). Over the last six games, Konecny has four points (0g, 4a).

Against Colorado on Sunday, it is very likely that Cates and Konecny will be asked to shoulder more than 20 minutes of ice time apiece. Foerster could play 18-plus minutes depending on how much special teams play there is.

    4. Michkov watch

Michkov lost his first-period power play goal in the Islanders game due to the goaltender interference ruling on the coach’s challenge. However, a more notable happening in Thursday’s game was the benching of the player from the mid-second period to the end of the game. Michkov got far too high in the defensive zone with a New York defenseman pinching and the puck in too dangerous of an area to gamble on receiving a home run pass.

In previous situations, the rookie has responded with a strong performance the next time he plays. The Flyers need another such bounceback from the 20-year-old Russian rookie.

From an offensive standpoint, Michkov has found less time and space to make plays over the last seven weeks or so. Nevertheless, he’s still third in rookie scoring leaguewide (34 points), second on the rookie goal scoring leaderboard (14, two behind Macklin Celebrini) and second on the Flyers in points (four ahead of Tippett in one fewer game played). It’s not Michkov’s scoring pace that is of concern to Tortorella, although chances and production have been more sporadic since mid-December. It’s been more about going to the right spots, avoiding repeat errors that have been addressed through video and dialogue and balancing the rookie’s high competitive drive with the need to understand when to try to make a play and when to live to fight the next battle.

This is not an overnight or a linear process, and the process can often be tougher when a young player is as exceptionally skilled and creative as Michkov. The rewards are also higher on the other side of going through the growing pains. That’s why it was notable that Michkov was in reasonably good spirits at Saturday’s practice despite being benched in the previous game. He wants as much ice time as he can possibly get, of course, but also understands there is give-and-take in the process (especially with a coach who is as demanding as Tortorella about his non-negotiables).

    5. The altitude factor

Games in the Mile High City, even apart from the hockey-related challenges of facing a team with as much high-end talent as Nathan MacKinnon, Makar and company can throw at you, are a challenge for visiting teams because of the altitude. Even the best conditioned athletes can struggle with their stamina and experience longer-than-usual recovery times between shifts.

For the Flyers on Sunday, it is an absolute must to keep their shifts as short as possible and to execute smart line changes. It’s true in every period but especially the second (longer change) and third (wear-down risk). The Flyers cannot afford to get caught out on prolonged shifts in the defensive zone, but there’s sometimes no other choice. Philly will need to take away the middle of the ice and push play to the perimeter as much as possible. When the Flyers have the puck, even when pressing the attack, they have to be mindful of when it’s time to change. Otherwise they risk running out gas and giving up an odd-man rush or breakaway.

Last but certainly not least given all the factors in play for this game, the Flyers will probably need a “A” game in goal from projected starter Samuel Ersson. If he can see it, he needs to stop it. If there’s a preventable rebound, he needs to reel it in. If and when there are protracted spells with the Avalanche holding the puck in the Flyers zone, Ersson will need to get stoppages for his team as well as initial saves. It’s a very tall order.

    1. Flyers looking to bounce back: After a tough loss to the Stars, the Flyers are hoping to regroup and come out strong against the Avalanche.
    2. Avalanche on a hot streak: The Avalanche have been on a roll lately, winning their last three games. Can the Flyers put a stop to their winning streak?
    3. Rivalry renewed: The Flyers and Avalanche have a history of intense matchups, and fans can expect another exciting game when these two teams face off.
    4. Key players to watch: Keep an eye on Claude Giroux and Nathan MacKinnon, two of the top scorers for their respective teams who could make a big impact in this game.
    5. Playoff implications: With both teams fighting for a playoff spot, every game is crucial. A win for either team could be a significant step towards securing a spot in the postseason.

  • Philadelphia plane crash today updates: Crew members, passengers killed in medical jet crash identified

PHILADELPHIA — We have now learned the names of all six people aboard a medical jet who perished when the plane crashed into a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood on Friday evening.

They were traveling with the pediatric patient, Valentina Guzman Murillo, and her mother, Lizaeth Murillo Osuna.

Valentina Guzman Murillo was in Philadelphia to receive care from Shriners Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

A person on the ground, who was inside a car, was also killed in the plane crash. That person’s name has not been released.

In an update Sunday, Mayor Cherelle Parker said that 22 people were injured. Of those, five people remain hospitalized, with three of them in critical condition.

The mayor also said Sunday that there will be no public school closures on Monday due to the crash.

The jet took off at 6:06 p.m. Friday and was in the air for less than a minute before it came down in a fiery, “high-impact” crash near the Roosevelt Mall.

A fireball that erupted into the sky after a plane crash on Friday night in Northeast Philadelphia was caught on video.

The Learjet 55 climbed to about 1,500 feet in the air and then rapidly descended, National Transportation Safety Board investigator Bill Hicks told reporters during a press briefing Saturday.

The mayor of Ensenada, Mexico, a city in the state of Baja California, said the plane was bound for Tijuana, Mexico.

There was no indication of a problem radioed from the flight deck of the jet back to Air Traffic Control before the crash, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told reporters. “In fact, in the recording that we have, there is an attempt by air traffic controllers to get a response from the flight crew that they didn’t receive,” she said.

The NTSB has classified the crash as an accident.

The “high-impact” crash left debris scattered across four to five city blocks, Homendy said. Investigators have yet to recover the jet’s black box, which she said may have been damaged or destroyed.

“It could be intact,” she said. “But likely it is damaged. It may be fragmented.”

Video from inside a diner show people ducking for cover as debris flies from the plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia.

Philadelphia residents or business owners who find debris should email the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov, Homendy said.

Earlier, the mayor said residents could also call 911 if they come across airplane debris.

Investigators will spend several days and, possibly, weeks collecting debris from the scene, the NTSB chair said.

At least five homes caught fire in the aftermath of the crash, Philadelphia officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

The crash of the medical jet came just two days after an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with a regional American Airlines jet near Reagan National Airport just outside Washington, D.C., killing 67 people.

Homendy said her agency is able to carry out both investigations simultaneously.

“We are a highly skilled agency,” she said, adding that it’s not unusual for the board to investigate two incidents.

In a message posted on social media platform X, U.S. Transportation Sean Duffy called the back-to-back disasters a “heart-wrenching week.”

Regarding the Philadelphia crash, Duffy said, “We’re not going to have answers right away. It’s going to take time. But as I get those answers, I’m going to share it with all of you.”
