3 observations after Sixers fall just short in high-scoring battle vs. Nuggets – NBC Sports Philadelphia
The Sixers fell a hair shy of pulling off a fifth consecutive win Friday night.
They lost a high-scoring battle to the Nuggets, dropping a 137-134 game at Wells Fargo Center.
The Sixers are now 19-28 overall. Denver is 29-19.
Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with a 42-point, nine-assist performance.
Guerschon Yabusele scored an NBA career-high 28 points on 12-for-17 shooting and Kelly Oubre Jr. put up 27 points.
Nikola Jokic posted 28 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. Jamal Murray recorded 31 points and 11 assists.
The Sixers still had six players out, including Joel Embiid (left knee injury management) and Paul George (left pinkie finger extensor tendor injury).
Sixers head coach Nick Nurse said pregame that George is “day-to-day.” He said the Sixers plan for Embiid to practice Saturday and expect to have a better sense of his status after that.
The Sixers will play the Celtics on Sunday night in Philadelphia. Here are observations on their defeat to the Nuggets:
Jokic and Maxey feature in 1st quarter
Maxey committed three turnovers Friday in under two minutes. Jokic fed Aaron Gordon for a dunk and Nurse called timeout with his team trailing 14-6.
The Sixers faced the same size-related challenges present in their blowout loss last Tuesday to Denver. The Nuggets scored the night’s first 12 points in the paint.
As he routinely does, Yabusele sparked a Sixers run. He hit a wing three-pointer, stole the ball from Russell Westbrook and steamed forward for a coast-to-coast slam. The Sixers soon had their first lead.
Maxey shrugged off his shaky start and found his groove as an isolation scorer late in a 13-point, four-assist first quarter. He passed Kyle Korver for third place on the Sixers’ all-time made three-pointers list.
On the other end, Jokic appeared well on his way to a triple-double with nine points, six rebounds and six assists in the opening period. He casually diced up the Sixers’ defense and caused frequent problems with his transition ventures after defensive rebounds.
Script flips with second-unit scoring
After the Sixers amassed 40-15 bench scoring edge in their win Wednesday over the Kings, the second-unit story was quite different Friday night.
Christian Braun and Julian Strawther combined to make five three-point shots in the first half. Denver scored the game’s first 19 bench points.
The Sixers still managed to stay close in an offense-centric first half. Oubre led a bench-heavy lineup well. He drove and finished forcefully, drew free throws and barely sat. He wound up logging 22 minutes and 29 seconds before halftime.
Every Sixers starter made at least one three-pointer in the first half. Yabusele went 4 for 5 from long distance and Justin Edwards shot 3 for 4.
The points flowed freely on both sides. Unless they turned the ball over, the Nuggets appeared destined to create a high-quality shot. Denver held a 73-69 lead at intermission and shot an incredible 66.7 percent from the floor over the first two quarters.
Back-and-forth action late
Maxey capitalized on Denver’s lax transition defense in the third quarter, converting a layup and then a pull-up three just 18 seconds later.
Yabusele kept on scoring, too. Less than a minute after setting his new career high, Yabusele slammed in a big-time alley-oop dunk off an Edwards lob. On top of the Frenchman’s scoring variety, it was impressive to see Yabusele go at Jokic and grab his chances to either shoot comfortable jumpers or drive past the three-time MVP.
Again, neither defense had much success in the third quarter. A buzzer-beating Ricky Council IV three cut the Nuggets’ advantage to 103-100 going into the fourth period. Council made another corner triple early in the fourth quarter, then swiped a steal from Westbrook and dished to Oubre for a game-tying layup.
Adem Bona played a couple of excellent minutes after a Denver timeout — a dunk, a block, an offensive rebound and ample hustle. Ultimately, the Sixers were down 112-109 when Maxey checked back in with 8:25 left in the fourth quarter.
The Sixers substantially elevated their defensive level for a stretch in the fourth. Kyle Lowry did good work on several occasions against Gordon in the post. Maxey tightly contested jumpers that Murray and Braun air balled.
In the shotmaking department, the Sixers continued to receive plenty of contributions. Eric Gordon drilled back-to-back deep threes. Maxey sliced through the Nuggets’ defense for driving layups, Oubre nailed a corner three and the Sixers took a 128-125 lead.
Jokic and Maxey each starred in an entertaining, back-and-forth final few minutes. Jokic sunk multiple shots that the Nuggets needed, including a go-ahead three with 39.8 seconds remaining. His runner with 12.7 seconds to go gave Denver a 135-132 edge.
Out of the ensuing timeout, Oubre made a put-back layup off a Yabusele miss inside. The Sixers took up considerable time in the process, though.
After two Murray foul shots, Yabusele had to resort to a half-court heave before the final buzzer. It came up short and the Sixers’ 134 points were insufficient for a fifth straight win.
- Embiid’s dominance on full display: Despite the loss, Joel Embiid once again showed why he is one of the most dominant big men in the league. He put up an impressive stat line of 34 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists, showcasing his versatility and skill on both ends of the court.
- Lack of defensive intensity: The Sixers struggled to contain the Nuggets’ high-powered offense, allowing them to shoot over 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range. With key players like Ben Simmons and Matisse Thybulle out due to injury, the team’s defensive deficiencies were exposed, and they will need to address this moving forward.
- Offensive firepower not enough: Despite scoring 120 points, the Sixers couldn’t keep pace with the Nuggets’ explosive offense. Tobias Harris had a strong showing with 21 points, but the team as a whole lacked consistency and struggled to find their rhythm at key moments in the game. Moving forward, they will need to find ways to improve their offensive efficiency and execution in crunch time situations.

What we know about the Learjet 55 medical plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia
A Philadelphia community is still processing what happened Friday evening after a small medical jet transporting a newly-released Shriners Children’s Hospital patient, her mother and four crew members, crashed in Northeast Philadelphia. The jet was heading to Springfield, Missouri, from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport before it crashed.
The tragedy continued on Saturday when officials said that all six passengers aboard the plane had died, along with one person who was on the ground at the time of the crash.
Just moments after leaving the airstrip, the plane crashed into a residential neighborhood near the Roosevelt Mall at approximately 6:07 p.m., causing an explosion, setting many homes ablaze and sending debris flying blocks away.
What led up to Philly plane crash
The Federal Aviation Administration identified the small medical jet as a Learjet 55. The aircraft was operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, a Mexico-based company with divisions in Florida that specializes in flights to Mexico, South America and the Caribbean.
During a press conference on Saturday, National Transportation Safety Board officials gave insight into where the jet had been in the hours leading up to the “high-impact” crash.
According to the NTSB, the jet had departed from a base in Florida on Friday at around noon and arrived in Northeast Philadelphia around 2:15 p.m. The jet was on the ground for a few hours before departing the runway to Springfield, Missouri, at around 6:06 p.m.
A GPS collected data indicating that the jet climbed about 1,500 feet into the air before taking a slight right turn, followed by a slight left turn, and then a steep descent where the plane crashed, officials said.
The entire flight was less than one minute.
The chairman of the NTSB said Air Traffic Control tried communicating with the crew before the crash but never received a response.
Over the next several days, or possibly weeks, NTSB officials said they will collect debris from the crash, load it onto a truck, move it to a secure location, and evaluate it. Officials said the plane is “highly fragmented,” and the debris field extends over four to five blocks.
The mission of the NTSB’s investigation is to uncover how and why the crash happened and prevent it from happening again.
Two plane engines have been recovered; however, the cockpit voice recorder is still missing. The NTSB said on Saturday that the recorder could be intact but is likely damaged or fragmented.
Anyone who comes across debris is asked to not touch it. NTSB officials said it’s dangerous and vital to their investigation. They are also asking anyone who encounters debris to email witness@ntsb.gov.
The agency is identifying the crash as an accident.
Where did the plane crash in Philadelphia?
The medical jet crashed near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard near the Roosevelt Mall on Friday evening shortly after 6 p.m.
The crash caused an explosion and set several homes ablaze in the Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood in its wake. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said all six people on the plane were killed, along with one person in a car on the ground.
“This was a medical transport plane that took off from our nearby, Northeast Philadelphia Airport, and it was only afloat for a very short period of time before something went terribly wrong,” the mayor said during a press conference Saturday.
The plane crash also knocked out power to more than 200 people. Local hospitals told CBS News Philadelphia they’ve treated more than 20 victims injured in the crash.
“We have teams who are going literally house by house, door to door, and also our License and Inspections personnel are inspecting all of those dwellings,” said Adam Thiel, managing director of the City of Philadelphia.
“I want to offer my prayers to all of those who are impacted,” Shapiro said during a press conference.
Officials are urging people to stay away from this area, with road closures and SEPTA detours still in effect.
Shriners Children’s Hospital patient killed in Northeast Philly crash
The president of Mexico confirmed all six people on the plane were Mexican citizens. Of the six passengers, a pediatric patient who had just finished treatment at Shriners Children’s Hospital, along with her mother and four crew members, on their way back to Mexico.
“It’s extremely hard and extremely difficult, those that were involved directly in her care were very aware that she was going to be traveling home and there had actually been a sendoff for her today,” Mel Bower, a spokesperson for the hospital, said Friday evening.
When asked if she enjoyed the end-of-treatment celebration earlier Friday, Bower said, “I’m certain that she did. Our staff — they work so hard at bringing joy and laughter and excitement into all parts of the clinical aspect. Our patients don’t look at it as going to the hospital. They go to a place where they have fun and have enjoyment.”
Bower continued by saying the hospital community at Shriners was impacted very deeply by the crash and that their patients are their family. He added that the care the hospital provides is not just in the clinical sphere but goes beyond a personal level.
The recent Learjet 55 medical plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia has left many people shocked and saddened. Here is what we know so far about the tragic incident:1. The Learjet 55 was en route from Toledo Express Airport in Ohio to Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey when it crashed just before landing at Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
2. The plane was reportedly carrying medical personnel and a patient who was being transported for treatment.
3. The crash resulted in a large fireball and thick plumes of smoke, causing significant damage to the aircraft and surrounding area.
4. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire and search for survivors. Unfortunately, all seven individuals on board the plane were pronounced dead at the scene.

#Learjet #medical #plane #crash #Northeast #PhiladelphiaNTSB: Cockpit voice recorder still sought in Northeast Philadelphia plane crash that left 7 dead, 19 injured
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The medical transport jet carrying a patient and her mother back to Mexico was in the air less than a minute before it plunged to the ground in a busy corridor of Northeast Philadelphia, the National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday evening.
“This was a high-impact crash and the plane is highly fragmented. There is substantial impact on the entire community,” said NTSB Chairman Jennifer Homendy.
The crash claimed at least seven lives and injured another 19 people following an explosion that sent debris flying down the block.
Officials identified the mother and daughter as Lizeth Murillo Osuna and Valentina Guzman Murillo.
“The debris is scattered. It is very dangerous, and so I encourage everyone to stay out of the accident site. It’s very dangerous,” Homendy noted.
Officials did not specify the extent of those injured but did say the injury and death toll could change, adding that it could be days or more before we know the totals for sure.
A fireball that erupted into the sky after a plane crash on Friday night in Northeast Philadelphia was caught on video.
Jefferson Health told Action News that they provided care for 15 individuals, and 12 have since been discharged. Two people have been admitted for further care and one patient was transferred to another hospital.
Temple University Hospital said Saturday morning that six patients were treated and released from the Jeanes Campus. One person is hospitalized at Main Campus and is listed in fair condition.
One pediatric patient is being treated at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
The cockpit voice recorder, which will aid investigators in learning what happened, is still being sought.
“It could be intact but likely it is damaged. It may be fragmented,” said Homendy, adding that the device, known as a black box, is orange in color.
Homendy stressed that it could be in pieces or a different color due to the blast.
Citizens or business owners who spot debris or the cockpit voice recorder are urged to email the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.

The jet left the runway at 6:06 p.m. and climbed to 1,500 feet, officials said. It took a slight right turn followed by a slight left turn before it plummeted to the ground, the NTSB said.
While the investigation is still in its early stages, officials said the crash is being classified as an accident and it doesn’t appear there were any issues communicated to air traffic control.
“In fact, the recording that we have, there is an attempt by air traffic controllers to get a response from the flight crew, that they didn’t receive,” Homendy explained.
A large fire burned in the wake of the crash, prompting a significant response. Vehicles, homes and even people in the area could be seen on fire.
Officials said five structures were ablaze after the crash, which have all been extinguished.

Investigators are still assessing damage in a four to six-block area, where they are continuing a grid search of the scene to ensure they have accounted for everyone and found all evidence, as well as checking for any structural damage.
Along with the debris field in the area of the impact site, Philadelphia Managing Director Adam Thiel said they are also investigating debris in a “remote area” where “something happened with the aircraft.” He said, “That’s something we’ll leave the NTSB to talk about.”
During Saturday’s briefing, Homendy said she couldn’t comment but investigators would evaluate those claims.
Thiel emphasized that the work to count the number of victims of this crash is still underway. He urged the public to call 911 if they’re worried someone is missing.
“If you haven’t seen somebody, you think somebody might have been in this area, you have a relative in this area and you haven’t seen or heard from them, and you’re concerned, call 911 and we will take it from there,” he said.

All 6 on medical plane that crashed in Philadelphia were killed
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A person in a car was the seventh fatal victim of the fiery crash of an air ambulance onto a busy Philadelphia street, authorities said Saturday, as investigators sifted through burned cars, damaged homes and charred debris for clues to determine why the aircraft plummeted shortly after takeoff.
Carrying six people from Mexico, including a child who spent months in treatment at a hospital, the Learjet 55 went down just after departing from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport, creating what witnesses described as a massive fireball, shaking houses and leaving a chaotic street scene.
Authorities couldn’t yet say why the jet crashed, and Adam Thiel, the city’s managing director, said it could be days — or longer — until officials are able to fully count the number of dead and injured across a sprawling impact area in a densely populated residential area.
The plane took off, reached about 1,500 feet of altitude and then plummeted in a steep descent, crashing less than a minute after takeoff in what National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy called a “high-impact crash” that left the plane “highly fragmented.”
Seven dead and 19 hurt, although the toll could go higher
AP correspondent Julie Walker reports on another deadly plane crash, this one a small medical transport that crashed Friday night in Philadelphia.
As of Saturday morning, officials said, there were seven dead — six on the jet and the person in the car — and 19 injured. Most of the injured had been treated and released, hospitals said.
There are “a lot of unknowns about who was where on the streets” when the plane crashed, and it is possible that the casualty figures will grow, Thiel said.
The crash scene was at least four to six blocks, and authorities were working to assess the damage, including going house to house to inspect the dwellings, Thiel said.
Homendy said her agency’s staff was working to collect debris from the plane, which could take days or weeks, and haul it away to a secure location to begin evaluating it.
Air traffic controllers didn’t hear anything concerning before the crash, and her agency was still looking for the cockpit voice recorder, a helpful piece of evidence in the investigation, Homendy said.
It is likely damaged and possibly fragmented because of the impact, although her agency’s researchers and engineers have significant expertise in repairing them, she said.
The plane hit the ground just after 6 p.m., during a busy Friday evening dinner hour less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the airport.
“All of sudden I heard like a ‘boom,’ and I thought it was a thunderstorm,” said Selkuc Koc, a waiter at the Four Seasons Diner on Cottman Avenue. “And I get up and look at the smoke and the fire, it was like a balloon. I thought it was a gas station that blew up.”
One diner patron was hit and injured by a small but heavy metal object that flew through the window, Koc said.
Child patient had just finished treatment for life-threatening condition
Of the six people on board the medical transport jet, one was a child who had just completed treatment at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia hospital, one was her mother and four were crew members, officials said.
A hospital spokesperson said the girl spent four months there receiving life-saving treatment for a condition not easily treated in Mexico. Shriners officials said they couldn’t give details about the girl or her family because of patient privacy rules.
“Her journey was one of hope and of aspiration,” spokesperson Mel Bower told The Philadelphia Inquirer. The relationships that the girl formed with staff “were true and were dear,” and she’ll be missed greatly by them, he said.
All the victims on the jet were from Mexico
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said all six victims on the plane were from her country. In a statement on the social media platform X, she mourned their deaths.
“Consular authorities are in constant contact with the families; I have asked the Foreign Affairs Secretary to support whatever is needed. My solidarity with their loved ones and friends,” she said in Spanish.
Tijuana, Mexico, across the border from San Diego, was to have been the flight’s final destination after a stop in Missouri.
Neither Philadelphia officials nor plane owner Jet Rescue Air Ambulance disclosed the identities of the dead.
But XE Médica Ambulancias, a Mexican emergency service, identified one of its doctors, Raúl Meza, as a victim. In a post on X, it said he was the service’s chief of neonatology and assigned to a the ISEM Atizapán hospital, which is in the State of Mexico near Mexico City.
In Veracruz, a city on the Gulf of Mexico, relatives of Josué Juárez said he was the aircraft’s co-pilot. They were preparing to hold a family ceremony and staying away from TV and social media to avoid seeing images of the crash.
They hadn’t seen videos, but they were told that there was a horrible explosion, that the plane broke apart and that the crash scene covered several blocks, brother Édgar Juárez told The Associated Press by phone.
Josué Juárez, 43, lived in central Mexico, loved salsa dancing and video games and had been a pilot for more than a decade, his brother said. He loved to fly and worked for the air ambulance service for more than a year, flying mostly from Mexico’s Caribbean coast to the United States.
“He was always aware that he had his risks, but the truth is that more accidents happen on the road,” Édgar Juárez said.
Crash comes on the heels of devastating D.C. midair collision
The crash came just two days after the deadliest U.S. air disaster in a generation. On Wednesday night, an American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided in midair in Washington, D.C., with an Army helicopter carrying three soldiers. There were no survivors.
Homendy said the NTSB is a highly skilled agency, and that it is not unusual for it to investigate two major accidents at the same time.
Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, which operated the Mexico-registered Learjet 55, is based in that country and has operations both there and in Miami. A company spokesperson said a seasoned crew operated the plane, and all flight crews undergo rigorous training.
The Philadelphia crash was the second fatal incident in 15 months for Jet Rescue. In 2023 five crew members were killed when their plane overran a runway in the central Mexican state of Morelos and crashed into a hillside.
Air traffic controller lost contact with Learjet
The Learjet took off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, which primarily serves business jets and charter flights.
Audio recorded by LiveATC captured an air traffic controller telling “Medevac Medservice 056” to turn right when departing. About 30 seconds later, the controller repeats the request before asking, “You on frequency?” Minutes later the controller says, “We have a lost aircraft. We’re not exactly sure what happened, so we’re trying to figure it out. For now the field is going to be closed.”
Michael Schiavone was sitting at his home nearby when he heard a loud bang and the house shook.
“There was a large explosion, so I thought we were under attack for a second,” he said.
A doorbell camera captured video of the plane plunging in a streak of white and exploding as it hit the ground.
“All we heard was a loud roar and didn’t know where it was coming from,” said Jim Quinn, the doorbell’s owner. “We just turned around and saw the big plume.”

Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost played their last game with the Flyers on Thursday night.
The team sent both forwards to Calgary in a trade with the Flames. In return, the Flyers received Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, a 2025 second-round pick and 2028 seventh-round pick.
Reports of a trade being in the works surfaced late in the second period of the Flyers’ 3-0 loss to the Islanders.
Farabee and Frost were both first-round picks of the Flyers. For a while, they were viewed as potential foundation pieces. But over this season and last, they became change-of-scenery candidates on a rebuilding team.
Despite having a career year last season, Farabee was challenged by the Flyers in the summer to take the next step. His production tapered off in the second half, which made this season an important one for his future.
The winger was recently a healthy scratch for three straight games as his scoring and overall effectiveness just hadn’t been there. Farabee, who turns 25 years old next month, was in the third year of a six-year, $30 million contract.
Frost, 25, was a pending restricted free agent in the final year of his two-year, $4.2 million contract. The playmaking center had gone through his struggles with trying to appease head coach John Tortorella. Over time, it seemed to take a toll on Frost mentally.
Moving on from Farabee and Frost could not have been an easy call for Danny Briere and company. Both players are still relatively young with some upside still there.
But the Flyers have taken a step back this season, giving the general manager more incentive to make changes and start planning for the offseason. The Flyers have a chance to be creative this summer with more cap space and assets. With the acquisition of the second-round pick, the Flyers have seven selections in the first two rounds of the 2025 draft (three first-rounders, four second-rounders).
And there are still five weeks before the March 7 trade deadline.

Kuzmenko is a Russian winger who turns 29 next week. He’s on an expiring contract with a $5.5 million cap hit, making him an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. Kuzmenko put up 39 goals and 74 points as a rookie in 2022-23 with the Canucks. With the Flames this season, he had four goals and 11 assists in 37 games.
Pelletier, 23, also comes to the Flyers on an expiring contract. He’s a pending restricted free agent who was a first-round pick of Calgary in 2019. He had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and a plus-10 mark in 24 games this season.

Philadelphia Eagles Gift Super Bowl Tickets to Survivor of New Orleans Attack
The Philadelphia Eagles are taking a very special guest with them to the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
On Jan, 30, the Eagles shared a video of the moment that defensive end Brandon Graham told Ryan Quigley, a longtime super fan of the team who was injured in the New Year’s Attack in New Orleans, that he was going to the big game on Feb. 9.
Quigley was injured in the attack and tragically, his best friend Tiger Bech was one of the 14 people killed on Bourbon Street that day.
The Eagles invited Quigley to their facility to give him the big news, where he told Graham that he had promised Bech, who he would attend games with, that he would take him to the Super Bowl if the Eagles returned.
“He would love nothing more than to be there,” an emotional Quigley said of his late friend.
“And I’m going to make sure he’s there with us, you know? I’m sharing his story,” Quigley added. “That’s my calling.”
Bech’s sister, Ginnie, was also invited to join Quigley at the Eagles facility, where she shed tears and said that “such a negative memory” has turned into a “really beautiful and cool” way to honor her brother’s life. “It’s really meant so much,” she added.

“We’re going to go back to New Orleans and leave on a positive note from that city, given that Tiger’s from there and that I promised him I was going bring him down to the Super Bowl,” Quigley told College Sports Only after the visit to the Eagles facility.
According to CBS, Graham said it “means a lot” that Quigley will return to New Orleans to support the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
“I know he said in his mind he didn’t want to go back to New Orleans because of what happened … And I know for me, I wanted to change that for him to conquer his fears.”
The Eagles will face the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2025 Super Bowl on Feb. 9, in a rematch of the 2023 game.
Quigley and Bech were on Bourbon Street on Jan. 1 when a pickup truck plowed through the streets, killing 14 people and injuring many more.
The Philadelphia Eagles have made a heartwarming gesture by gifting Super Bowl tickets to a survivor of a recent attack in New Orleans. The recipient, who wishes to remain anonymous, was a victim of a violent assault that left them hospitalized and facing a long road to recovery. In a statement released by the Eagles organization, they expressed their sympathy for the survivor and their family, and their desire to bring some joy and positivity into their lives during this difficult time. The team hopes that attending the Super Bowl will provide a much-needed distraction and opportunity for the survivor to create new, positive memories.
This act of kindness and generosity is a reminder of the power of sports to bring people together and uplift those in need. The Eagles’ gesture is a shining example of compassion and support, and we applaud them for their thoughtfulness. Let’s hope that this gift brings some comfort and joy to the survivor as they continue on their journey to recovery.

Tyrese Maxey did not make the cut for the NBA’s Eastern Conference All-Star reserves.
After being named to his first All-Star Game last year, Maxey was not among the seven East reserves selected by the NBA’s head coaches. Those players were announced Thursday night as:
- Jaylen Brown
- Cade Cunningham
- Darius Garland
- Tyler Herro
- Damian Lillard
- Evan Mobley
- Pascal Siakam
Maxey’s averaged 27.1 points, 6.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds. He’s often been the primary star and one of the few reliably available players for the 19-27 Sixers, who have dealt with a deluge of injuries. Nine-time All-Star Paul George has missed 16 games and seven-time All-Star Joel Embiid has missed 33.
“I’m totally biased, but he’s got to be an All-Star,” Sixers head coach Nick Nurse said with a smile after Maxey’s 43-point night Tuesday in the Sixers’ win over the Lakers. “He’s got to be. What is that, 11 straight games with 28 (points) or more? That’s pretty good. If they voted, I say we vote again — if he didn’t make it. Hopefully, he’ll make it. He deserves to make it.”
The scoring streak Nurse mentioned is now at 12 consecutive games following Maxey’s 30-point, eight-assist performance Wednesday in the Sixers’ victory vs. the Kings.
While his shooting percentages have declined from last year, Maxey’s near the top of the NBA in several key categories. He’s officially second in minutes per game (37.9), third in steals per game (1.9) and sixth in scoring average.
After winning the league’s Most Improved Player Award last season, he’s made the progress Nurse hoped to see defensively.
“My defense has been a lot better,” Maxey said Tuesday. “I just needed time to get adjusted to the NBA game, get a little bit stronger. I’m not going to lie, when I was in college and high school, I was a good defender. But when I first came into the league, I had to learn how to play pick-and-roll defense. I had to learn how to play team defense. It’s way different. And then I missed my whole training camp my rookie year, basically (after testing positive for COVID-19).
“So all the principles and all that stuff, I didn’t get it. I had to kind of learn it on the fly, learn it throughout the year. Now, having multiple training camps, being in multiple playoff games, big-time games, I kind of just know the game and know everybody’s tendencies. I sit on the couch every single day starting at 7 (p.m.) and I watch all the basketball games, so I know everybody’s tendencies and that’s helped me.”
Maxey’s stepped into a larger leadership role this season, too.
“From last year to this year, he obviously has a new contract and all that stuff,” KJ Martin said on Dec. 18. “I was happy for him, but he’s stayed the same person inside. That was probably the biggest thing, just him as a person and him using his voice. He’s been using it way more. Everyone sees kind of the nice side of him, but he can turn it on and get on guys.”
This year’s All-Star Game will be on Sunday, Feb. 16 at Chase Center in San Francisco.
Sixers rookie Jared McCain has been named a 2025 Rising Star, though he won’t compete in the event itself because he’s out following season-ending left lateral meniscus surgery.
The Philadelphia 76ers’ rookie guard Tyrese Maxey narrowly missed out on a spot in the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star reserves. Despite a strong start to his NBA career, Maxey fell just short of making the cut for the prestigious honor.Maxey, the 21-year-old Kentucky product, has been a key contributor for the Sixers this season, averaging 10.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. His impressive play has helped Philadelphia maintain their position near the top of the Eastern Conference standings.
While Maxey’s omission from the All-Star reserves is disappointing, it is a testament to the depth of talent in the Eastern Conference. With established stars like Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and Zach LaVine securing spots on the roster, Maxey faced stiff competition for a spot in the game.
Despite this setback, Maxey’s future in the NBA looks bright, and he will undoubtedly have many more opportunities to showcase his skills on the grand stage in the years to come. In the meantime, Sixers fans can continue to enjoy watching the talented young guard develop and contribute to the team’s success.
