Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker called the death of 18-year-old Temple University student Tyler Sabapathy a “terrible, terrible tragedy” and cautioned fans against climbing poles during future celebrations.
Parker also sent her condolences to the family during an unrelated press conference inside City Hall Wednesday.
“I want to continue to reaffirm and echo the same sentiments that I said before that game, asking the public to refrain from climbing poles,” the mayor said.
Sabapathy died after he climbed a light pole and fell near City Hall during the Eagles NFC championship celebrations Sunday night.
The Toronto native was a student at Temple who studied exercise and sports science. He was also on the university’s men’s gymnastics team.
The team remembered him in an Instagram post, saying he was “an exceptional athlete” and “outstanding person.” The gymnastics team also said “he represented his family and our university with the utmost class.”
Students at Temple University said the news came as a shock. They found out in an email late Tuesday night.
“Just feel so sorry for his parents, his friends, his loved ones. It’s sad,” one student said.
Philadelphia Police said the department has launched an investigation into Sabapathy’s death.
The department also said safety plans for potential Super Bowl celebrations will be released at a later time.
“[Police] are going to continue doing what they’ve been doing, and that is to make the public’s health and safety of Philadelphia our No. 1 priority,” she said.
In a recent tragic incident, a Temple University student lost his life during the Eagles celebration in Philadelphia. The student, who fell from a pole while celebrating the team’s victory, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Philadelphia Mayor, Jim Kenney, has expressed his sorrow and condolences to the family and friends of the young student. In a statement, Mayor Kenney called the incident a “terrible tragedy” and emphasized the importance of celebrating responsibly.
The Mayor urged all fans to be cautious and exercise caution during celebrations, especially when climbing on structures or poles. He also emphasized the need for everyone to look out for each other and prioritize safety above all else.
As the city mourns the loss of a young life, Mayor Kenney has promised to work with authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that necessary measures are taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the Temple University student during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.

While it’s easy to argue that should have been the least of their worries considering they finished the regular season tied for the seventh-best ERA (3.81) in Major League Baseball, one could only wonder what that number would have been if they had a competent fifth starter.
Taijuan Walker was a disaster last year, and the options they brought in to try and replace him proved they weren’t ready to be handed the ball every fifth day.
So, the Phillies acquired Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins, buying low on the left-hander coming off an injury-riddled campaign last year even though he showed he’s one of the top arms in the sport when he was healthy in 2023.
On paper, the rotation looks set.
Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola will lead the unit with Ranger Suarez, Cristopher Sanchez and Luzardo slotted somewhere in the mix wherever it makes sense to deploy the three lefties.
When he arrives, that will give the Phillies six starting pitchers, and since they are unlikely to utilize a six-man rotation considering Wheeler’s dislike of it, that means someone is going to see their role get changed.
“… if anything, I could see them moving Suárez (or a different starter) to the bullpen. But my guess is not everyone stays healthy,” he wrote when asked if the lefty could be moved at the deadline.
The health aspect is crucial here.
Philadelphia has enjoyed a good string of positive variance when it comes to their pitchers avoiding injuries, and for the cynics out there, they might say it’s only a matter of time until that changes.
If everyone does stay off the injured list, though, it’s interesting to see the prediction that Suarez would be the one who gets his role reduced to reliever, but when diving in, it does make sense.
While he’s become a fan favorite for what he’s done as a starting pitching in the playoffs, he began his career in the bullpen and is still working on building up his arm for the workload that’s necessary to pitch at a high level every fifth day 30 times per year.
Suarez was a full-time starter in 2022, making 29 starts and throwing his career-high in innings with 155.1.
The following season, he began the year on the injured list with an elbow strain, not making his first appearance until May before he found himself on the IL again with a hamstring strain.
That resulted in just 22 starts and 125 innings pitched.
This past campaign, Suarez was in the NL Cy Young mix early on, carrying a sizzling 2.27 ERA through the month of June that earned him his first All-Star nod. But in the eight starts after the Midsummer Classic, his ERA was 5.65, which also saw him miss time on the injured list with a lower back issue.
All of that is to say, using the lefty out of the bullpen for the second half of the year might actually allow him to be more effective for this Phillies team.
And with more gas left in the tank, he could still provide those incredible playoff moments, just this time around, he can go deeper into games and not turn things over to the bullpen unit early in the contest.

Philadelphia leaders are gathering at City Hall on Friday to respond to recent federal immigration enforcement actions and remind residents of their rights and protections under the law.
Officials from City Council, the Pennsylvania General Assembly, and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office will speak in a news conference at 10 a.m. You can watch live in the player above or wherever CBS News Philadelphia is streaming.
Leaders have spoken out about residents’ rights since President Trump undertook several executive orders and actions on immigration in the first days of his second term.
In a recent “Trump preparedness hearing,” Philadelphia officials said the city has not changed its commitment to Executive Order No. 5-16, enacted during Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration. The order says the city will not honor ICE detainer requests unless supported by a judicial warrant and pertain to a person convicted of a felony involving violence.
Joe Brandt has been a digital content producer for CBS News Philadelphia since 2022. He is a Temple University graduate and was born and raised in Pitman, NJ.
In light of recent federal immigration actions, Philadelphia leaders are reminding residents of their rights and standing up for the city’s immigrant community.
Mayor Jim Kenney, along with other local officials, has voiced opposition to the recent crackdown on undocumented immigrants by the Trump administration. In a statement, Kenney emphasized that Philadelphia is a welcoming city that values diversity and inclusion.
“We will not allow fear and intimidation to divide our community,” said Kenney. “We will continue to stand up for the rights of all our residents, regardless of their immigration status.”
City Council President Darrell Clarke echoed Kenney’s sentiments, stating that Philadelphia will not cooperate with federal immigration authorities in targeting immigrant communities.
“We will not turn our backs on our neighbors and friends who have come here seeking a better life,” said Clarke. “We will continue to protect and support our immigrant residents.”
Philadelphia leaders have also been working to educate residents about their rights in the face of increased immigration enforcement. The city has provided resources and information on what to do if approached by immigration authorities, as well as legal assistance for those facing deportation.
“We want all our residents to know that they have rights and protections under the law,” said City Solicitor Marcel Pratt. “We are here to support and defend our immigrant community in any way we can.”
As the federal government continues to ramp up immigration enforcement, Philadelphia leaders are committed to standing up for the rights of all residents and ensuring that the city remains a safe and welcoming place for immigrants.

A potential miracle Brandon Graham return is one step closer.
The Eagles on Thursday opened up Graham’s practice window, which means there’s still a chance he could play a week from Sunday against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
B.G. has been on Injured Reserve since Nov. 26, two days after he tore his triceps in the Eagles’ win over the Rams in Inglewood, Calif.
The Eagles were scheduled to practice Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week before traveling to New Orleans on Sunday. Graham won’t count against the 53-man roster unless the Eagles activate him from Injured Reserve.
After the Eagles beat the Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, Graham told NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro he had an exam scheduled for the next day to determine if a return after just 11 weeks was possible.
“I’ve been working, man, but we’re going to see,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m just happy we got there. Them boys scored 55 today. That’s what’s up. That might be telling me something.”
That, of course, was a reference to B.G.’s jersey number since 2013.
Graham of course was one of the heroes in the Eagles’ win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. His strip sack of Tom Brady with 2:16 left and the Eagles up 38-33 is one of the most iconic plays in franchise history. The Eagles went on to win 41-33.
Graham and Lane Johnson are the only position players left on the roster from the Eagles’ only Super Bowl championship.
Graham, 36, was playing at a very high level in his 15th season when he got hurt. He had 3 ½ sacks, a forced fumble, six tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits and two pass knockdowns in 11 games while averaging 28 snaps per game.
In his last game, Graham increased his career sack total to 76 ½, moving past Clyde Simmons (76) and into third in Eagles history, behind Reggie White (124) and former teammate Trent Cole (85 ½).
Graham is the franchise record holder with 5 ½ career postseason sacks, although Nolan Smith is only one behind him.
With Graham out, Vic Fangio has gone with a three-man edge rush rotation with Smith, Josh Sweat and rookie Jalyx Hunt. Smith has 10 ½ sacks, including four in the postseason, Sweat has 8.0 but none in his last five games, and Hunt has 2 ½, including one in the playoff win over the Rams. Big-money free agent Bryce Huff has played only 13 snaps during the postseason, 12 of them in mop-up time Sunday.
B.G. said Sunday whether or not he plays, he’ll be a big part of things as the Eagles play in their third Super Bowl in eight years.
“I’m with it regardless,” he said. “Yes or no, it don’t matter. I’m just happy these guys is just working their butt off and now we got to the Super Bowl. Now we gotta go finish.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that defensive end Brandon Graham has been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and will begin practicing with the team. This is a significant step forward for Graham as he continues his recovery from a knee injury that sidelined him for the start of training camp.
Graham, who is entering his 12th season with the Eagles, is a key player on the team’s defense and his return to practice is a positive development for the team. Head coach Nick Sirianni expressed his excitement about having Graham back on the field, stating, “Brandon is a leader on this team and his presence on the field will be a boost for our defense.”
Graham’s return to practice comes at a crucial time for the Eagles as they prepare for the upcoming season. His veteran presence and playmaking ability will be invaluable as the team looks to improve on their performance from last season.
Fans and teammates alike are thrilled to see Graham back in action and are hopeful that he will be ready to make a significant impact once the regular season begins. Stay tuned for updates on Graham’s progress as he continues to ramp up his practice participation with the team.

Just like two years ago, there are split loyalties in Super Bowl LIX for Jason Kelce.
The NFL’s season finale on February 9 in New Orleans will see his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, face off against the Kansas City Chiefs, including his brother Travis.
The two teams faced off in Super Bowl LVII, the first championship game ever to feature two brothers playing on opposing squads, with Travis and the Chiefs ending up victorious in Arizona that time.
Jason has since retired but, having spent his whole 13-year playing career with the Eagles, has split allegiances between the two franchises.
And speaking on Wednesday’s episode of the “New Heights” podcast which he co-hosts with Travis, Jason revealed where his loyalties stand a little over a week and a half away from Super Bowl LIX.
“Here’s the biggest thing. Obviously, you’re my brother. I’ll always root for my brother. That’s the reality of it,” Jason, wearing an Eagles hat and jacket, explained. “Even though I’m decked out in Eagles gear, I’m always rooting for Travis.
“But, there’s a lot of people in the Philadelphia organization – whether it’s players, coaches, people in the building – that feel like extended family to me, especially my former offensive linemen. Like (right tackle) Lane Johnson feels like a brother in a lot of ways. I’m rooting for those guys too. I’m rooting for Philadelphia and I’m rooting for Travis Kelce. That’s the reality of it. Not matter what on game day, I’m going to be happy for one of those sides and I’m going to be sad for the other side.”
He also went on to acknowledge the similarities between the last time the two teams played in the Super Bowl, recognizing that it will probably be a “little bit less intense” as he won’t be on the field this time.
“I think it’s going to be very similar, I really do. I live in Philadelphia, I still go to the facilities on a very regular basis,” he said. “I still feel like I am a Philadelphia Eagle and that I’m a part of all these people who root and cheer our team.
“So I would be lying if I said I don’t want the Eagles to win, but I also want Travis Kelce to win. That’s a long-winded way of saying I just want to see a good football game, whoever wins.”
Travis suggested Jason needed a half-and-half jumper similar to the one their mother Donna wore to Super Bowl LVII – with one half the green Eagles and the other the red Chiefs – but Jason quickly shut down the idea, saying he cannot wear red.
When asked about how he’s feeling in the build-up to his fifth Super Bowl, Travis said he was “feeling great.”
“Life is amazing. It’s a crazy feeling to be this fortunate in a game that you’ve been playing your entire life, man,” the 35-year-old Chiefs tight end said.
“I’ve had a lot of heartbreak, I’ve had a lot of times where it hasn’t been this sweet and right now, I’m just riding the high of living this dream out with my brothers and everybody in Kansas City.”
In a recent interview, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce revealed his pick for Super Bowl LIX between his brother Travis Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, and his former team, the Eagles.
When asked who he would be rooting for in the big game, Jason Kelce said, “I’ll always have love for the Eagles and the city of Philadelphia, but blood is thicker than water. I’ll be supporting my brother and the Chiefs all the way in Super Bowl LIX.”
It’s sure to be a bittersweet moment for Kelce as he watches his brother compete against his former team, but family ties run deep. Fans can expect to see Kelce cheering on the Chiefs as they battle it out on the gridiron for the championship title.
