  • Scott Laughton back with Flyers, Ryan Poehling skates with trainer – NBC Sports Philadelphia

VOORHEES, N.J. — The Flyers were happy to see Scott Laughton at Sunday’s practice after the alternate captain had to miss the last three games because of a personal family matter.

Laughton is a beloved guy in the team’s locker room. He’s also a valuable player with his positional versatility and secondary scoring.

“You miss a guy like that around the room, he’s always a vocal presence and keeping things light,” Owen Tippett said. “To have him back, I think it’s a good boost for our group and a nice little reset to have him around again.”

The Flyers are trying to stabilize Monday after losing their last two games by a combined score of 9-2. They welcome the Devils (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP), a team they beat eight days ago, when Laughton last played.

“Obviously he had to take a leave, just being here for him and happy to have him back,” Travis Sanheim said. “He’s a big part of this team, big part of this locker room, so we’re excited to have him back. I’m sure he’s looking forward to getting back with us, as well.”

The Flyers also saw Ryan Poehling return to the ice as he recovers from a head injury. The 26-year-old center skated before practice in a tracksuit under the watch of head athletic trainer Tommy Alva.

Poehling suffered the injury 10 days ago when he took an illegal check to the head against the Islanders. There has been no timetable for his return.

“I’ve been in Poehling’s situation before and it’s not fun,” Tippett said. “There are a lot of hidden variables that go into it that a lot of people don’t understand and it can be tough to stay in it and not get frustrated. Just him being around the room and getting back on the ice, it’s a big motivator for him and for us to see him back.”

While Tippett can relate to Poehling’s injury, he knows the recovery can be different for everyone.

“The most you can do is just check in,” he said. “He has been through it before, too. With something like that, you wake up in the morning not knowing how you’re going to feel. To see his progress and to get him back on the ice, that’s one of the biggest steps to getting back.”

Maxim Tsyplakov, who delivered the hit on Poehling, didn’t receive a penalty during the game but was given a three-game suspension the next day.

“Unfortunate with Poehls, the hit he had to take,” Sanheim said. “We knew in real time how bad the hit was. Obviously [the officials] didn’t feel it was. Later on, we find out that it was a three-game suspension. He means a lot to us.”

Laughton and Poehling are key pieces to the Flyers’ bottom six and penalty kill.

“Both big, important guys in this locker room,” Sanheim said. “Good character guys, good leaders. They bring it every night. … It would mean a lot to get both of them back.”

Scott Laughton back with Flyers, Ryan Poehling skates with trainer

The Philadelphia Flyers received some good news as forward Scott Laughton returned to practice with the team after missing the last few games with an upper-body injury. Laughton, who has been a key contributor for the Flyers this season, was seen participating in drills and looked to be in good spirits.

On the other hand, Montreal Canadiens forward Ryan Poehling was spotted skating with a team trainer during practice. Poehling, who has been dealing with a lower-body injury, has been sidelined for the past few games and his return to the lineup remains uncertain.

Both players are important pieces for their respective teams and their presence on the ice will be crucial as they head into the final stretch of the season. Flyers fans will be relieved to see Laughton back in action, while Canadiens fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Poehling. Stay tuned for updates on their status as the season progresses.

  • What time is the Philadelphia Eagles game Sunday? What to know before Philly hosts the Commanders in NFC championship

The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders will go head-to-head in the NFC championship on Sunday with a one-way ticket to Super Bowl LIX on the line.

Of course, this isn’t the first time these two teams have played against each other this season. The Eagles beat the Commanders 26-18 the first time they went up against each other on Nov. 14. But the Commanders took home the win in their second regular season matchup, winning 36-33 on their home turf.

The winner of Sunday’s game will headline the 2025 Super Bowl playing against either the Buffalo Bills or Kansas City Chiefs.

Philadelphia faithful, get the game-day snacks and your favorite Eagles hoodie on because this game is a must-watch. Here’s what to know before kickoff Sunday.

What time does the Eagles game start today?

The NFC championship game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders kicks off at 3 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field. Although in tailgating time that means it’ll be an extra early morning for Birds fans planning to park it down in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex lots.

Tickets are still available to see the Birds in person at the Linc on Sunday, but these will cost you more than a bit. Ticket sales on TicketMaster started as low as $600.

The Better Business Bureau shared tips for buying tickets online earlier this month.

    • Verify your tickets with will call.
    • Use a credit card so you can get your money back if tickets are fake.

    Philadelphia Eagles Injury Report

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was a full participant in practice on Friday and has no game status designation. Hurts previously said he expects to wear a knee brace on Sunday.

Meanwhile, tight end Dallas Goedert who suffered an ankle injury, was also a full participant in practice Friday and has no game status designation ahead of the NFC title game.

Center Cam Jurgens returned to practice Friday as a limited participant and is questionable for the game. Landon Dickerson got some reps in as center during practice in the event that Jurgens can’t play. Additionally, wide receiver Britain Covey and defensive tackle Byron Young, both players on Injured Reserve, were ruled out ahead of Sunday.

The team announced Saturday they’ve elevated linebacker Nicholas Morrow and fullback Khari Blasingame for the NFC title game. The Eagles also signed defensive end KJ Henry to the practice squad and released offensive lineman Cameron Erving from the practice squad.

    NFC championship game weather forecast

Temperatures on Sunday will be slightly above average for this time of year. At kickoff, temperatures will reach a seasonable range in the low 40s, with a wind chill in the mid-30s. During the Eagles-Commanders NFC championship game, cloud coverage could shift from mostly cloudy, to partly cloudy.

Familiar face returning to the Linc

If the Eagles want to reach the Super Bowl for the second time in three years, they’ll have to beat one of the franchise’s all-time greats. Zach Ertz, who caught the go-ahead touchdown pass in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, plays tight end for the Commanders.

Ertz spent nine seasons with the Eagles after he was selected in the second round of the NFC draft in 2013 out of Stanford University. He ranks fifth all-time in franchise history in receiving yards, second all-time in catches and seventh all-time in receiving touchdowns.

Ertz last played with the Eagles in 2021, but the team traded him to the Arizona Cardinals midway through the season. He played with the Cardinals for three seasons until he signed with the Commanders in the offseason.

In the 2024 season, Ertz had his best season since 2019. He had 66 catches, 654 yards and seven receiving touchdowns, which ranked second on the team. In the divisional round win over the Lions, he had five catches for 28 yards and a touchdown.

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to face off against the Washington Commanders in the NFC championship game this Sunday. The game will kick off at 1:00 PM EST at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Before the highly anticipated matchup, here are some key things to know:

    1. The Eagles are coming off a strong regular season, finishing with a record of 12-5 and securing the top seed in the NFC. They have been led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, who has had a breakout season and will look to continue his success against Washington’s defense.

    2. The Commanders, on the other hand, finished the regular season with a record of 9-8 and secured a wildcard spot in the playoffs. Led by quarterback Taylor Heinicke, Washington will look to pull off an upset on the road and advance to the Super Bowl.

    3. This will be the first meeting between the Eagles and the Commanders in the playoffs since 1990, adding extra excitement to the game.

    4. The winner of this game will advance to the Super Bowl and represent the NFC in the championship game.

So mark your calendars and get ready to cheer on the Eagles as they battle the Commanders for a chance to advance to the Super Bowl. Let’s go Eagles! #FlyEaglesFly #NFCChampionship

The Philadelphia 76ers (16-27) pay a visit to the Chicago Bulls (19-26) Saturday. Tip-off from United Center is set for 8 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NBA odds around the 76ers vs. Bulls odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.

    Season series: Philadelphia leads 1-0

Philly outlasted the Cleveland Cavaliers in a 132-129 outing Friday while covering as a 9-point underdog. Paul George put up 30 points while the Sixers shot 21-for-39 (53.8%) from 3-point range in the win. The win ended a 7-game losing streak for Philly.

Chicago was embarrassed 131-106 by the Golden State Warriors Thursday while failing to cover as a 4-point underdog. The Bulls shot a terrible 39.1% from the field while also being out rebounded 52-42 against Golden State. The Bulls have been held to under 110 points in 3 of their last 4 losses, and they’ve lost 7 of 10.

76ers at Bulls picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Bulls 114, 76ers 112

    Moneyline

    PASS.

I like the Bulls to win here as -165 favorites as the Sixers are playing on the back end of a back-to-back.

    Against the spread

    LEAN 76ERS +4.5 (-115).

Philly has covered the spread in back-to-back matchups against the Bulls and is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 matchups between these squads in Chicago.

With Coby White out for Chicago, Philadelphia’s chance of covering here skyrockets.

This is a lean because Philly is just 15-28 ATS this season and because the Sixers are playing on the backend of a back-to-back meaning they will be tired and will likely have at least one player sit out.

    Over/Under

    LEAN UNDER 230.5 (-110).

The Under has hit in 7 of Chicago’s last 10 games and is 24-21 for the Bulls this season. The Under has also hit in all of the last 6 matchups between these squads and is undefeated in the last 3 battles in the Windy City.

This is a lean because the Over is 5-1 in Philly’s last 6 games and is 24-18-1 for the Sixers this season.

  • Commanders (and 76ers) owner Josh Harris knows what awaits him in Philadelphia

At least Josh Harris has had practice with Philly fans shooting him the bird.

Drunks have done it, of course. But so have sober coeds. Everyone in Philly is a potential middle finger-giver when their team stinks. And, right now, the 76ers — one of the other pro sports teams Harris owns — currently stink, having had to play most of the year without franchise lynchpin Joel Embiid, who’s been injured.

So, when Harris sits courtside at Wells Fargo Center to watch the 76ers, he often hears from the multitudes. In Philly, the multitudes don’t sing in angelic harmony. They scream and cuss.

    Life in the big city.

So the majority owner of the Washington Commanders knows full well what’s in store when he returns to the City of Brotherly Love Sunday with his football team, with a Super Bowl berth at stake, to play against the city’s beloved Eagles.

The Eagles beat the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl LII following the 2017 season, lost a heartbreaking Super Bowl LVII to the Kansas City Chiefs two years ago and desperately want to raise the Lombardi Trophy again. To get to New Orleans and Super Bowl LIX by knocking off Harris’ Commanders would be doubly sweet for the Illadelph.

Many who live there, these days, are not Harris fans.

“Look, I think it’s going to be hard. Philly fans are passionate about their team,” Harris said from a hotel room in Toronto, where his businesses had taken him earlier this week.

“For me, or anyone else, playing in Philly in the NFC Championship Game and seeing their passion for their team, is tremendous,” he continued. “They make it hard on the opposing teams, and they make it hard on everyone. Yes, I have an extra special place in that.

“But I think no matter who you are, if you come in and you’re playing in Philly, and you’re playing the Eagles, and you’re playing against that team, with those fans, they’re going to make it hard on you. So we’re all going in knowing that. But listen, when I went to Detroit, you couldn’t even hear. It was so loud. … I was thinking, ‘How does Jayden (Daniels), how is the offense going to function?’ And they just powered through it.

“Our team seems to be able to handle these situations. We play well on the road. … I just have faith that we’re going to go in and do what we have to do. That’s what I’m expecting and hoping for, and I fully expect Philly to unleash on all of us.”

The subplot involving Harris, Philadelphia and the 76ers — and, across the state line, the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, who Harris also owns — is so deliciously twisted. But it shouldn’t overshadow the main thing, at least the main thing in Washington.

A year and a half after spending $6.08 billion to buy the Commanders from Dan Snyder, Harris has done nothing but roll sevens and restore a tarnished and battered franchise to its previous place as the top sports entity in the DMV. (A million years ago, when I was the team’s reporter for the Washington Post, I was told the most important beat in town was covering the President of the United States. The second most important beat in town was covering the football team. The person who told me this wasn’t smiling.)

Harris hired Adam Peters from the San Francisco 49ers to be the team’s general manager. Then he hired Bob Myers from the four-time NBA champion Golden State Warriors as an adviser and consultant. Harris, Peters and Myers picked Dan Quinn from Dallas to coach the team, as the popular choice outside the building for the job, then-Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, passed on the opportunity.

Harris, Peters, Myers and Quinn picked Daniels to be their franchise quarterback. Daniels and his preternatural abilities have taken it from there. His spectacular season has sped up the internal timeline for the Commanders’ contending window and for a potential new stadium for his team within the next few years.

    GO DEEPER

In Jayden Daniels, Washington’s Super Bowl-winning QBs see one of their own

Harris will, no doubt, make significant mistakes during his ownership of the Commanders. Hasn’t happened yet, though. He has shown, so far, to be much more than Not Snyder.

“Obviously, we have what looks to be an elite quarterback in his first year,” Harris said. “You have the rookie scale, which allows for you to then create free agents around him who do other things, instead of paying an elite quarterback. And Adam and Dan, to a large extent, when I watched the draft or free agency, whether it’s (Mike) Sainristil or Jayden, their picks have been remarkable. Dan built an amazing staff — we’re trying to keep it together right now. They were relatively superb at what they did. And people want to be a part of this.

“Everybody’s having a good time. All the vets are sort of like, ‘Yeah, we could stay here. Let’s go.’ … But I mean, right now, we’re totally focused on Sunday. And they’re focused on Sunday.”

Harris was in the locker room last weekend alongside Peters and Quinn after Washington upset the top-seeded Lions, 45-31, listening to the sounds of a deliriously happy team, soaking it all in.

“I don’t know other teams, but they do, and they say it’s very unusual how together the whole locker room is, how much belief there is,” Harris said. “But there was no way to predict it. Nobody predicted it. I mean, I didn’t predict it. So we’re just riding it and trying to be supportive of it, and enhancing it any way we can.”

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

The Commanders are a win away from the Super Bowl. Let that marinate for a bit

After a crazy night in the U.S. Senate on Dec. 20, Harris has a chance to make a deal to build a new stadium on what is clearly his preference: the RFK Stadium footprint, and the 177 acres of potential mixed-use economic nirvana a project with a new stadium as its anchor could provide.

The Senate, somehow after Congress excised language in a short-term spending bill two days earlier that would have given D.C. control of the RFK site to the city, unanimously passed a continuing resolution that restored the controlling mechanism over the RFK site. Harris needed all 100 senators to agree — or, at least, not to raise an objection to the CR.

    No one did.

Harris, who had existing relationships with multiple senators from his years in business, first for Apollo Global, and his latest venture capital endeavor, 26North, worked the phones in the final hours — along with others in his leadership team — to assuage senators who were uncertain about voting yes for the bill to do so, according to local city sources.

Now, the District can do whatever it wants with the land. What Mayor Muriel Bowser, most assuredly, wants to do is build a new Commanders stadium 28 years after the team left RFK for what is now Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md.

And with the wildly unexpected run of the Commanders this season, with a charismatic, young franchise quarterback set to be the face of the franchise for the next decade, Harris has all the juice as he enters advanced discussions with the city on a potential deal for a new stadium on the RFK site. The city will have to come up with legislation to present to the Council, just as it did in pushing forward a bill that committed $515 million in public funding last month toward renovations of Capital One Arena, the home of the NBA’s Wizards and NHL’s Capitals.

    go-deeper

“Clearly, the feelings that I had about the team, a lot of people had about them, right?” Harris said. “It’s been since 1991 that the DMV and the city have experienced this. So I think there is real momentum. Obviously, capitalizing on that momentum, capitalizing on how the people feel, those are the constituents, the people who are going to decide what happens. … I think there is this notion that we should try to accelerate that, and that goes for Maryland and (Gov.) Wes Moore, and D.C. and the mayor. D.C. has said, the mayor’s said publicly, that she wants to get this done quickly, this year. And I think we’re supportive of that, and I understand that. …

“But, clearly, what’s happened on the field is something that we should keep an eye on, and we are keeping an eye on it, and how do we move forward quickly?”

Harris insists he doesn’t yet know where the next Commanders stadium will be. His enthusiasm about the RFK site, though, gives him away.

“Well, I know, we’ve been pretty clear what’s the right thing to bring the city together,” he said. “But we’re starting the appropriate political process, so I don’t know where that’s all going to come out, and what’s going to be allowed, and what land we’re going to be given. I have a vision. I have sketches of what it would be. The notion that you would have RFK, in line with the Capitol and the Washington Monument, right by the Anacostia River, connecting to Nationals Park, with all the land, it’s a breathtaking opportunity.”

Harris likes to move quickly. He was well aware, and troubled by, the NFL Players Association survey last year in which Commanders players ranked the franchise last in the league in working conditions, receiving an overall grade of F-minus. That included F-minuses in three of 11 categories, including the locker room, training room and treatment of families.

Though the poll was much more a reflection of the conditions Harris inherited from previous ownership, it nonetheless stung. With Peters as a guide, Harris has invested significantly in the last year to upgrade the players’ recovery and rehabilitation areas at Commanders Park and hired more trainers to work with players.

“He wants to know, ‘What’s best in class?’” a league source said.

Harris ripped out the old, awful artificial turf field that blighted Commanders Park. He and his group spent $75 million last offseason trying to make Northwest Stadium a more palatable game day experience. But, his MO is to drive his people to the right answer — relentlessly — and leave no question unasked before doing so.

“Everybody’s got the same information,” said Marc Lasry, former majority owner of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks who’s worked with Harris over the years. “It’s what you do with that information. His skill set is taking all that information and synthesizing it into what’s important. That’s what he’s done in business, and that’s what he’s done in sports.”

An NFL source who’s worked with Harris this year said, “You’ve got to show your work. It’s a math problem. If you show your work, you’re good.”

Every Monday during the NFL season — the Commanders’ famed “Tell the Truth Mondays” — Harris gets on a video call with Quinn, Peters and Myers. Quinn shows the group anywhere from six to 10 plays from their most recent game.

“I specifically like those times as a coach, so I can show, ‘This is what we were thinking, this is what happened,’” Quinn said Wednesday. “So it’s a good way to highlight the player, the moment, the situation. Why we chose to do what we did. And it’s good, ’cause I want (Harris) to be able to ask anything: ‘Why’d you go for it? Why’d you do that?’ He’s curious that way.

“We didn’t do that in the first game. So I was trying to explain stuff, and it was just clunky. … And so that, to me, has been something, wherever that meeting is taking place (for Harris), all over the world, literally, I’ve really enjoyed that. … I really respect that he always has time for Adam and I.”

Harris signed off on the controversial “Process” in Philadelphia, which called for consistent, years-long tanking to get as many chances at the top of the NBA Draft as possible. The results have been decidedly mixed. The Sixers got Embiid with the third pick in 2014, but he missed two years after numerous surgeries. Yet in 2023, he was the NBA’s MVP.

Josh Harris’ rebuilding strategy, famously known as “The Process,” helped the 76ers land 2022-23 NBA MVP Joel Embiid with the third pick in the 2014 draft. (Eric Hartline / USA Today)

The 76ers weren’t close to being a contender before The Process — they’ve now made the playoffs seven straight years. But, they haven’t gotten past the second round, despite bringing in Daryl Morey as general manager in 2020 and bringing in NBA championship-winning head coaches Doc Rivers and Nick Nurse.

The frustration level in Philly with the basketball team is immense. But Harris is adamant that it hasn’t lessened his involvement and interest in the team as his pro football squad has caught fire.

“We’re disappointed, we’re all disappointed with where we are with the Sixers,” Harris said. “Both these teams have true meaning to me. Obviously, I grew up in Washington. I walked down East Capitol St. (to attend games). But, my mom grew up right near Temple University in a row house. My grandfather was a U.S. Postal Worker there, and I used to visit them. And when I went to Penn, I saw the Sixers win the NBA title … and I saw the ticker-tape parade. That stayed with me. And that team, through Barkley, Iverson — and I was there for Sixers-Lakers (in the 2001 Finals). I was there for all of that.

“It’s exactly the same, for me — Washington football and Philly basketball. I know a lot of people have had different experiences than me, and maybe they’ve grown up with all the teams in Philly. But … the honest answer is, I’m truly passionate about both teams. When we show up on Sunday, I’m going to be doing everything I can do to hopefully have us do what we have to do, and win. At the same time, it doesn’t mean I can’t show up and do the same thing for the 76ers that week. That’s just the way I feel, genuinely. But I do understand why, for some people in Philly, they might not understand that, because they’ve had different life experiences than me. But I work just as hard for the Sixers in basketball as I do for Washington in football.”

Harris has certainly learned both from The Process and from his most recent tussle. He walked away from a potential arena deal in Philly’s Center City to do a joint new building near the current Wells Fargo Arena in South Philly with Comcast, the media behemoth with whom Harris had previously sparred for two years. Comcast controls and runs Wells Fargo; the 76ers were just a tenant there. The Center City deal would have given the basketball team its own building, in a controversial development near the city’s Chinatown neighborhood that had significant local opposition.

Yet Harris acquiesced at the 11th hour. At the behest of NBA commissioner Adam Silver — “He did broker the meeting,” Harris says now — Harris met with Comcast chair and CEO Brian Roberts and the two quickly worked out a new arena deal, to be paid for 50-50.

“They had been in one place, we had been in another,” Harris says. “But that’s how deals are, sometimes. They come together quickly. You’ve got to do what’s right. Ultimately, we just decided to do what’s right with the city. We went to (Philadelphia) Mayor (Cherelle Parker), we went to a lot of the other Council people, and we just told them we thought this was best for the city. And after a little consternation, they agreed.”

Come Sunday, though, Harris’ rooting interests will be for another city.

Tickets are likely to be among the most expensive in the history of NFC title games. The Commanders understand Lincoln Financial Field will be heavily green, with not many Washington fans able to nab seats from the Eagles’ rabid fan base.

For a third straight playoff weekend, Washington will be a sizable underdog. As for Harris, he’ll be ready for what comes his way.

“It’ll be a very intense day for me,” he says. “I’m going to be fully locked in on supporting Dan and supporting Adam and supporting our players. They’ve got to go do it. It’s not about me. I think that Jayden has proven himself to be in a league of his own in terms of being able to handle these high-pressure situations. It’s not going to be easy. Saquon (Barkley)’s great. The Eagles are great in a lot of ways. I’m hoping we’re going to do what we’ve got to do. That’s what I expect.”

As the owner of both the Washington Commanders and the Philadelphia 76ers, Josh Harris is no stranger to the passionate and demanding sports fans of Philadelphia. Known for their unwavering loyalty and high expectations, Philadelphia fans can be both a blessing and a curse for team owners.

With the Commanders recently rebranding and facing scrutiny from fans and critics alike, Harris knows that he will have to navigate the turbulent waters of the Philadelphia sports scene with grace and skill. The 76ers, on the other hand, have been a perennial contender in the NBA, but have yet to bring home a championship under Harris’ ownership.

As Harris prepares to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in Philadelphia, he understands that success will require more than just financial investment. It will require a deep understanding of the city, its fans, and the unique culture that defines Philadelphia sports.

Only time will tell if Josh Harris can rise to the occasion and bring glory to both the Commanders and the 76ers in the City of Brotherly Love. But one thing is certain – he knows what awaits him in Philadelphia, and he is prepared to face it head on.

  • Eagles vs. Commanders predictions for NFC Championship Game – NBC Sports Philadelphia

The No. 2-seeded Eagles are hosting the No. 6-seeded Commanders in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at the Linc.

    Let’s get to the predictions:

    Reuben Frank (12-7)

To me, this game comes down to which team can do a better job slowing down the other team’s superstar. Saquon Barkley and Jayden Daniels might mean more to their respective teams than any other two players in the NFL. Barkley is having one of the best seasons ever by a running back and Daniels is having the best season ever by a rookie quarterback. Both are in uncharted waters, setting more records with each passing week. And every time I look at these two teams, I just feel like – despite what Daniels did to the Eagles in the fourth quarter last month – the Eagles’ top-ranked pass defense is better equipped to deal with Daniels than the Commanders’ 30th-ranked run defense is equipped to deal with Barkley. Yes, Daniels is playing better than Jalen Hurts right now, but top to bottom the Eagles have a better roster, especially on defense. They’re the better team, and I think they’ll prove it Sunday afternoon with Barkley somewhere in the 175-yard range and earn their third trip to the Super Bowl in eight years.

    Eagles 33, Commanders 27

    Dave Zangaro (12-7)

The Eagles are the better team. Sure, the Commanders are a hot and confident team right now and they have a rookie quarterback who has been electric. But the Eagles are more talented and playing their third straight home playoff game, while the Commanders have needed to win all on the road. That’s not to say Daniels won’t make some plays; he will. But this Eagles’ defense was the best in the NFL this season and they’ve earned all the trust they’re getting as they gear up for an NFC Championship Game. On offense, Jalen Hurts might not be 100% but the Eagles have such an incredible rushing attack and I actually think Hurts will perform much better as a passer from inside the pocket in this game. A.J. Brown has been quiet all playoffs and I can’t see that continuing in the NFC Championship Game. The Linc is going to be rocking on Sunday and I think there’s going to be a party at the end of this game. The Eagles should be heading to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX.

    Eagles 31, Commanders 26

    Barrett Brooks (15-4)

This is exactly where I envisioned the Eagles being for the NFC Championship Game — in the Linc. I really thought they would be playing at home. I was thinking they would be the No. 1 seed, but they are not and took the long way without the bye wee. So we are here and the Commanders drew the long straw, facing the best team in the playoffs right now. The Eagles are the best team of the four still remaining in the tournament. I truly believe this.

The Commanders have a very talented rookie QB in Jayden Daniels. He is a calm and collected player who doesn’t let the pressure of being in the biggest game of his life worry him. At least to this moment. DC Vic Fangio will have something to say about that come Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Fangio has been coaching in the NFL for a long time. I’m very confident he will have a great game plan for the rookie QB.

On offense, the Birds must stick to their identity. This is a tough. physical run game that can not be stopped. This O-line is the best in the business. Saquon Barkley is the best offensive player in the NFL. This is as simple as 2+2=4! Run the rock and don’t turn the ball over. This has been the winning formula all season. Why reinvent the wheel? Stick to the game plan and win convincingly!

    Eagles 28, Commanders 21

    Mike Mulhern (14-5)

Jayden Daniels is a menace against man coverage and nearly impossible to stop when you blitz him. That was on full display in the Divisional Round against the Lions. The good news for the Eagles is they play a ton of zone coverage and blitz at one of the lowest rates in the league. They are going to make Daniels earn it as he looks to become the first ever rookie quarterback to lead his team to a Super Bowl.  Washington will be down their best offensive lineman in Sam Cosmi who tore his ACL in Detroit. They often left Cosmi 1 on 1 with Jalen Carter in their two matchups this season and Cosmi more than held his own. Suffice it to say, that is a huge loss. Carter has a real chance to wreck another game, and his interior pressure will severely limit what Washington is able to do.

The big questions in this game for me are about when the Eagles have the ball. Is Jalen Hurts a threat in the run game after suffering that knee injury against the Rams? Just how many bodies will Washington commit to stopping the run? Can the Eagles hit enough explosive plays in the pass game to back them off? I expect the Eagles will probably operate from the pistol formation quite often to take Hurts out of the running equation a bit, but Saquon Barkley is still going to get his. Washington is hoping 7-yard gains don’t turn into 70-yard house calls. With better conditions, I expect AJ Brown to be a major factor. He drew three pass interference penalties in the last matchup with Washington and should have plenty of opportunities to make big plays.

Dan Quinn is going to be gutsy and go for it every chance he gets. Nick Sirianni needs to match that aggressiveness. It’ll be a fun two weeks gearing up for New Orleans!

The NFC Championship Game is set to be an epic battle between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders. Both teams have had impressive seasons, but only one can emerge victorious and secure a spot in the Super Bowl.

The Eagles have been on a roll in recent weeks, with their dynamic offense led by star quarterback Jalen Hurts and a stout defense that has been able to shut down some of the best offenses in the league. They have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with and will be looking to continue their winning streak in the championship game.

On the other hand, the Commanders have also been playing at a high level, with a balanced offensive attack and a defense that has been able to make big plays when it counts. Led by veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Washington will be looking to pull off the upset and advance to the Super Bowl for the first time in years.

It’s sure to be a hard-fought battle between these two NFC powerhouses, but in the end, I predict that the Eagles will come out on top. Their explosive offense and strong defense will be too much for the Commanders to handle, and they will punch their ticket to the Super Bowl with a hard-fought victory. Make sure to tune in to NBC Sports Philadelphia to catch all the action!

Season series: Cavaliers lead 2-0; Cleveland won 114-106 in Philadelphia on Nov. 13, but the 76ers covered as 11-point underdogs as the Over (218.5) cashed. The home team is 2-0 against the spread (ATS) in both meetings, with the Over going 2-0 this season, and 7-1 in the past 8 in the series.

The Cavaliers lost 109-108 at the Houston Rockets Wednesday, and Cleveland is just 3-3 straight up (SU) in the past 6 games, while going 3-4 ATS in the previous 7 contests. The Over is 7-4 across the previous 11 outings.

The Sixers were pounded 144-109 at the Denver Nuggets, dropping a seventh consecutive game. Philadelphia has failed to cover the past 9 games, while the Over is 4-1 in the previous 5 contests.

Cavaliers at 76ers picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Cavaliers 121, 76ers 108

    Moneyline

The Cavaliers (-500) would set you back 5 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for not nearly enough reward. Even if you were to toss Cleveland into a same-game, multi-leg or cross-sport parlay, including the Cavs makes little to no less. All of the value is sapped from your ticket including such a heavy favorite.

    PASS.

    Against the spread

PLAY CAVALIERS -10.5 (-105) laying the points on the road against the banged up 76ers +10.5 (-115).

Philadelphia has failed to cover the past 9 games. While Cleveland hasn’t been playing its best basketball lately, you can’t bet on the Sixers without Embiid, Lowry and several others key rotation members.

    Over/Under

OVER 228.5 (-110) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at most.

The total has gone high in 4 of the past 5 games for Philadelphia, while cashing in each of the past 3 outings at home.

For Cleveland, while the Under has hit in the past 2 outings, the Over is 5-3 across the past 8 games, and 15-6 across the previous 21 contests.

  • Wagner finally in, Utley trending toward eventual Hall of Fame election? – NBC Sports Philadelphia

There was no doubt about Ichiro and little doubt about CC Sabathia, but one-time Phillies closer Billy Wagner still had to sweat it out in his 10th and final year on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, finally clearing the 75% voting threshold for enshrinement.

Wagner, who fell just five votes shy a year ago, received 82.5% of votes this time and was one of three players voted in by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, along with Ichiro and Sabathia.

Former Braves all-world centerfielder Andruw Jones fell about 30 votes short, appearing on just over 66% of ballots. He and Carlos Beltran (70%) were the two nearest misses but are trending toward election.

So is Chase Utley, one of the biggest risers in the field. The only five players to receive more votes this year were the three elected, Beltran and Jones. Utley received 39.8% of Hall of Fame votes this time around after appearing on 28.8% of ballots in 2024, his first year of eligibility. For reference, Wagner had a similar vote total in 2021, four years before making it in.

Utley should see another increase in 2026 when there aren’t sure-fire first-timers on the ballot like Ichiro and Sabathia. Cole Hamels will probably be the biggest new name eligible next year followed by a massive drop-off to potential one-and-dones like Shin-Soo Choo and Alex Gordon.

Former Phillies Bobby Abreu and Jimmy Rollins each received 14.8% of votes last year and jumped to 19.5% and 18%, respectively. Abreu is a quintessential example of a player whose skill set has gained more appreciation through the years, but he’ll have only four more chances via the writers’ ballot. This was Year 4 for Rollins.

It is clear that the voting body values Utley far above the other two. From 2005-09, he was perhaps the best overall player in baseball, hitting .301/.388/.535 with elite defense, elite baserunning and averages of 39 doubles, 29 home runs, 101 RBI and 111 runs scored. The question was always whether that peak was long enough. Two years into the process, it looks like the answer could be yes.

Former Phillie Dick Allen will be inducted posthumously this summer in Cooperstown after being elected with Dave Parker via a Veterans Committee ballot in December.

Wagner finally in, Utley trending toward eventual Hall of Fame election?

After years of waiting, former Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has finally been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Rollins, who played for the Phillies from 2000 to 2014, was a key member of the team’s 2008 World Series championship squad and was a three-time All-Star during his career.

Rollins’ induction has sparked speculation about the Hall of Fame chances of other former Phillies players, including closer Billy Wagner and second baseman Chase Utley.

Wagner, who played for the Phillies from 2004 to 2005, was one of the most dominant relievers of his era. He recorded 422 saves over his 16-year career and was a seven-time All-Star. Despite his impressive resume, Wagner has been overlooked by Hall of Fame voters in recent years. However, with Rollins now inducted, Wagner’s chances of eventually being elected to the Hall of Fame seem to be improving.

Utley, who played for the Phillies from 2003 to 2015, was a fan favorite and a key contributor to the team’s success during the mid-2000s. Utley was a six-time All-Star and won four Silver Slugger Awards during his career. He was also known for his exceptional defensive skills at second base.

While Utley has not yet been eligible for Hall of Fame consideration, he is widely regarded as one of the best second basemen of his era. Many believe that he has a strong chance of eventually being elected to the Hall of Fame.

As Rollins celebrates his induction into the Hall of Fame, Phillies fans are hopeful that Wagner and Utley will also receive the recognition they deserve for their contributions to the team and the game of baseball.

  • 5 Things: Flyers @ Rangers | Philadelphia Flyers

Looking to build upon their six-game point streak, John Tortorella’s Philadelphia Flyers (22-20-6) begin an Empire State back-to-back on Thursday against Peter Laviolette’s New York Rangers (23-20-4). Game time at Madison Square Garden is 7:00 p.m. EST.

The game will be televised on NBCSP. The radio broadcast is on 97.5 The Fanatic with an online simulcast on Flyers Radio 24/7 The Fanatic.

This is the second game of a three-game season series between the traditional arch-rival clubs. On Black Friday in Philadelphia, the Flyers skated to a 3-1 win as Bobby Brink opened the scoring and Travis Konecny later tallied twice (even strength and empty net). The Flyers outshot the Blueshirts, 35-23. The season series will conclude on April 9 back at MSG.

Entering play on Thursday, the Flyers and Rangers each have 50 standings points. The Rangers are technically own the tiebreaker over the Flyers. Currently, there is a logjam of eight teams vying for two wildcards playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The teams are presently separated by no more than six points: Columbus Blue Jackets (53 points), Ottawa Senators (52 points, 18 regulation wins), Montreal Canadiens (52 points, 17 RW), Boston Bruins (52 points, 16 RW), Rangers (50 points, 21 RW), Flyers (50 points, 13 RW), Pittsburgh Penguins (48 points, 14 RW), and Detroit Red Wings (47 points, 17 RW).

The Flyers, 5-0-1 in their last six games but just 5-3-2 over the last 10, have won each of their last three games. The Rangers are 6-1-3 in their last 10 games.

Here are five things to watch in Thursday’s game.

    1. Richard returns

The Flyers made several roster moves on Wednesday. The team assigned goaltender Aleksei Kolosov and winger Olle Lycksell to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms, while recalling winger Anthony Richard to the NHL roster.

Richard, 28, performed well during a previous NHL recall this season. The speedy French Canadian winger (No. 90) posted two goals and four assists in seven games before returning to the Phantoms. Unfortunately, he soon sustained an injury from which he only recently returned to play. At the AHL level this season, Richard has posted 19 points (8g, 11a) in 18 games. He has appeared in 31 career NHL games for the Nashville Predators, Montreal, Boston and Philadelphia.

Although officially listed as a center — he was drafted as a center out of the QMJHL by Nashville in the fourth round of the 2015 Entry Draft — the 5-foot-10 forward has almost exclusively played on the wing at the professional level. Richard played a top-nine spot in the Flyers’ line rotation during his earlier recall to the Flyers, but is now likely to see fourth-line duty barring an injury to a Flyers winger in the top nine.

Center Ryan Poehling remains on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury sustained last Thursday against the Islanders. Left wing/center swingman Scott Laughton has been absent while on personal leave. Rodrigo Abols, 29, made his NHL debut on Tuesday against the Red Wings, centering the fourth line. The expected fourth line at the start of Thursday’s game will have Abols centering Richard and Garnet Hathaway. Abols wears uniform number 18 for the Flyers.

    2. Beezer back on track

Joel Farabee has come back with fire and brimstone on the ice in the three games he has played since sitting out three games as a healthy scratch from Tortorella’s lineup. It hasn’t just been a matter of offensive production — Farabee has four points (1g, 3a) over the last three games — but he’s making numerous strong plays on the forecheck, with the puck on his stick and tracking back defensively. The line with Farabee on the left wing of a trio with Sean Couturier and Matvei Michkov has been clicking since they were put together.

In Tuesday’s 2-1 overtime win against Detroit, Farabee scored Philly’s lone goal in regulation. Later, he worked an overtime give-and-go sequence with Owen Tippett that eventually resulted in defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen jamming the puck into the net to win the game. Afterwards, Tortorella said the line of Farabee, Couturier and Michkov was the team’s best shift-in and shift-out trio in the game.

Farabee has had limited offensive success against the Rangers so far in his career (three goals, four assists, seven points, traditional -5 in 21 games). However, if his line can play as effectively against the Blueshirts as it did against the Red Wings, the Flyers’ chances of earning their second win of the season against New York improve markedly. Balanced scoring has generally been a positive factor for the Flyers over the team’s last 27 games.

    3. Tippett-Frost-Konecny line: create more in volume

During the Flyers’ two most recent wins, the line with Morgan Frost centering Tippett and Travis Konecny, has been patient while dealing with generally tight checking from the New Jersey Devils and Detroit. There has not been a high volume of scoring chances created by the line in the last two games but there have been a handful of Grade A scoring chances.

Most notably, in the Flyers’ 3-1 win in New Jersey, a Frost lead pass sent Konecny and Tippett into the attack zone on a 2-on-1. Unfortunately, Tippett fired Konecny’s feed wide of the net. Later, Tippett self-generated a breakaway at the end of a long shift that had been spent in the defensive zone. A potential penalty shot instead created a 5-on-4 power play (second unit winger Brink scored). Against Detroit, the line had an offensive flurry late in the second period in which Konecny hit the crossbar from point blank range in the low slot. In the third period, Konecny received a drop pass from Frost in the left circle and the ensuing shot pinged off the post.

Plays like these will happen to every line on every team. The key is to create a slightly higher volume of shifts that result in scoring chances than the trio has generated over the last two games. Otherwise, the line is completely dependent on converting a chance or two into a goal if the line is to get on the scoresheet at 5-on-5. For example, the Farabee-Couturier-Michkov line generated roughly a half dozen good scoring chances against Detroit, but only the Farabee goal (assisted by his two linemates) ended up showing on the scoresheet.

    4. Between the pipes

With a back-to-back road set on tap in Manhattan and Long Island on Thursday and Friday, the Flyers are expected to split the goaltending chores for the games against the Rangers and Islanders between Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov.

As of this writing, Tortorella had not yet confirmed which netminder would get the start against the Rangers. Both goalies have played well as of late and also gotten generally strong play in front of them. This is especially true of Ersson since the leaguewide holiday break.

Over his last eight starts, Ersson has posted a 7-1-0 record, 1.56 goals against average, .933 save percentage and one shutout.

Rangers superstar netminder Igor Sheshterkin has had a very strong January after some uncharacteristically inconsistent play prior to New Year’s Day. Coming off back-to-back shutout wins over Columbus (27 saves in a 1-0 win via shootout) and Ottawa (20 saves in a 5-0 victory), Sheshterkin has not lost in regulation in January. At the start of Thursday’s game, he will have a consecutive shutout minutes streak of 164:03 to his credit. His career-longest streak, set last season, is 166:30 without allowing a goal.

    5. Behind enemy lines: Lafreniere

Most discussions about any upcoming Flyers game against the Rangers start with talking about the need to contain longtime Philly killers Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad and defenseman Adam Fox. These three players still loom large heading into Thursday’s game, even with Zibanejad having a down season (he’s broken out of past slumps at Philly’s expense).

Right now, however, Alex Lafreniere is the Rangers’ hottest offensive player. He brings a nine-game point streak (6g, 3a) into Thursday’s game. In 18 career games against the Flyers, Lafreneiere has posted four goals and three assists.

  • Dallas Goedert, Cam Jurgens miss practice – NBC Sports Philadelphia

A couple key Eagles were not practicing on Thursday as the Eagles prepare to host the Commanders in the NFC Championship Game.

Tight end Dallas Goedert (ankle) was at practice at the Linc but did not have a helmet and was not participating. He did catch some passes on the side of the field while his teammates warmed up. And center Cam Jurgens (back) wasn’t seen at practice at all during the portion open to reporters.

Both Goedert and Jurgens were listed as “DNP” on the Eagles’ estimated injury report after a walkthrough to start the week.

Jurgens was a Pro Bowler in his first season as the Eagles’ full-time center, replacing legend Jason Kelce, so it would be a big loss if he can’t play on Sunday.

On Thursday, Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson worked at center. While Dickerson hasn’t played much center during his four-year NFL career, he did play center in college and has a good command of the offense. Tyler Steen replaced Dickerson at left guard.

If Jurgens can’t play on Sunday, the Eagles’ offensive line would likely look like this (from left to right): Jordan Mailata, Tyler Steen, Landon Dickerson, Mekhi Becton, Lane Johnson.

Goedert missed some time this season but is leading the Eagles in receiving through the first two games of this postseason. He has 8 catches for 103 yards the last two weeks after missing seven games in the regular season. He has also been a key cog in the Eagles’ run game as a blocker.

If Goedert can’t play, backup Grant Calcaterra would be the TE1 in this game.

All of the Eagles who were listed as limited to start the week were practicing on Thursday: QB Jalen Hurts (knee), CB Quinyon Mitchell (shoulder), WR AJ Brown (knee/rest), WR Britain Covey (neck), T Lane Johnson (knee/rest), OLB Josh Sweat (ankle/rest).

The two biggest questions after the divisional round win over the Rams were about Hurts and Mitchell. Both are expected to play on Sunday. The next question is about just how mobile Hurts will be with that left knee injury. Hurts had his left leg get caught under him awkwardly on Sunday and was limited after the injury.

Dallas Goedert, Cam Jurgens miss practice – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert and center Cam Jurgens were absent from practice today, raising concerns among fans and coaching staff.

Goedert, who has been a key player for the Eagles this season, was seen on the sidelines during practice, but did not participate in any drills. It is unclear why he was held out of practice or if his absence will impact his availability for the next game.

Jurgens, a rookie center, was also missing from practice, further complicating the situation for the Eagles’ offensive line. It is unknown if Jurgens’ absence is due to an injury or another issue.

Both players are integral to the Eagles’ success this season, so their absence is definitely a cause for concern. Fans will have to wait for updates from the team to learn more about the status of Goedert and Jurgens. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • 3 observations after Sixers’ skid reaches 5 games with loss to Pacers  – NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Sixers dropped their fifth consecutive game and dipped to 10 games under .500 on Saturday night in Indiana.

With a 115-102 loss to the Pacers, the Sixers now sit at 15-25. They’ll reach the season’s halfway point Sunday when they visit the Bucks.

Pascal Siakam posted 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the 24-19 Pacers. Myles Turner had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Tyrese Maxey was the Sixers’ leading scorer with 28 points. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Ricky Council IV each added 18.

The Sixers’ injury list remained lengthy and included Guerschon Yabusele, who sat out his first game of the season because of right knee swelling. In addition to Yabusele, the following Sixers missed Saturday’s game:

    • Joel Embiid (left knee injury management)
    • Paul George (left groin tightness)
    • Kyle Lowry (right hip sprain)
    • Caleb Martin (right hip sprain)
    • KJ Martin (left foot stress reaction)
    • Jared McCain (left lateral meniscus surgery)

Here are observations on the Sixers’ loss to Indiana:

    Drummond back in action

Andre Drummond returned after six games out with a left toe injury. He started alongside Maxey, Eric Gordon, Oubre and Council.

For the first time in a while, the Sixers’ strong start prompted the opponent to call an early timeout. The Pacers committed a couple of sloppy turnovers, Oubre and Gordon knocked down jumpers and the Sixers went up 8-1.

The Sixers’ zone defense was initially effective; Indiana began 0 for 6 from three-point range. The decision to use heavy doses of zone was reasonable, in part because it allowed Drummond to hang around the paint a bit more in his first game since Jan. 4.

The 31-year-old big man finished the night with eight points and three boards in 27 minutes. He looked rusty, losing out on several rebounds he’s accustomed to grabbing and being whistled for two illegal screens in the first half.

Moving forward, the Sixers will hope Drummond can stay healthy and provide some measure of consistency and dependability at center. Counting the Indiana game, Embiid and Drummond have combined to make five appearances in the month of January.

The best we’ve seen from Bona

Drummond shared the floor with fellow center Adem Bona for a few minutes in the second quarter.

Bona had his best half yet in the NBA. Though not known for his scoring, the rookie clearly has the power, leaping ability and competitive fire to do damage inside — on pick-and-rolls, on put-backs, in the open floor. He scored 11 first-half points on 5-for-5 shooting and threw down three big dunks.

Bona still doesn’t tend to appear very comfortable in less simple offensive situations, but that’s fine as long as he understands his game and avoids unnecessary risks. No need to try tight-window, cross-court passes out of the short roll or attempt to do anything tricky as a ball handler. He recorded no turnovers against Indiana and one assist, dishing to Maxey for a backdoor layup in the third quarter.

“Playing in the dunker (spot) helps us get spaced a lot, so I’ve been trying to do that and trying to draw the other big out of the paint,” Bona said on Jan. 9. “I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is me being on the court helps the team space the floor.”

The Sixers’ only two other players to check in off the bench in the first half Saturday were Justin Edwards and Jeff Dowtin Jr. Indiana’s second unit racked up 30 points before halftime, but the Sixers closed the second quarter well and kept rolling to open the third. After a Council three and a Drummond dunk, they held a 66-61 lead.

    Not enough long-range success

Indiana soon found its footing and surged back in front.

In many of the Sixers’ drastically shorthanded games this season, they’ve needed to make plenty of open jumpers to mitigate their lack of healthy players. That didn’t happen against the Pacers.

The Sixers went 10 for 34 (29.4 percent) from three-point range. Maxey was productive inside the arc, but he shot 2 for 7 on his long-distance tries. Over his last five games, he’s at 25.5 percent.

The Pacers seemed on the verge of putting the game away early in the fourth quarter. Edwards fouled out and the Sixers’ deficit grew with Maxey on the bench. Indiana took a 101-85 lead on a Siakam hoop with 8:25 to go.

Instead of Drummond or Bona, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse then opted to use Pete Nance at center. Nance hit a three on his first touch and the Sixers rather improbably made a 10-0 run. A Council slam trimmed the Pacers’ advantage to 106-100.

Again, the Sixers could not ultimately beat the odds. They’re two games out of a play-in tournament spot and searching for any kind of win.

    1. Embiid’s absence is glaring: Without Joel Embiid on the court, the Sixers’ lack of rim protection and interior scoring was evident against the Pacers. The team struggled to contain Indiana’s big men and generate easy baskets in the paint.
    2. Ben Simmons’ shooting woes continue: Simmons’ struggles from the free-throw line and perimeter were on full display in the loss to the Pacers. His inability to consistently knock down open jump shots has become a major concern for the team moving forward.
    3. Defensive lapses are costing the Sixers: Philadelphia’s defense, which was once a strength of the team, has faltered during their recent losing streak. The Sixers have allowed opponents to score at will and have struggled to get stops when it matters most. Addressing these defensive issues will be key to turning things around for the team.
