  • Philadelphia weather forecast cold after snow

Some Alaskans evidently left their freezer doors open.

Whatever the explanation, Philadelphians and much of the nation are experiencing one pervasive and impressive cold spell.

One measure of the power and coverage of the Arctic air mass that could drive temperatures to near zero in the Philly region this week, is the fact that a winter storm warning was in effect Tuesday and Wednesday for New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

“It may end up being a historic winter storm for some of those areas,” said Marc Chenard, senior forecaster at NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Anchorage, Alaska, were averaging almost 11 degrees above normal in January through Sunday, when it got all the way to 35 degrees.

Philadelphia is unlikely to see 35 until the weekend, and on Monday, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware were among more than 35 states from the Rockies to the Atlantic Coast that were under a weather service “cold weather advisory.”

Lows even in the city are forecast to fall into the single digits the next three mornings, with below-zero wind chills Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service says. Highs might not reach 20 on those days. The Philadelphia School District will operate on a two-hour delay Tuesday, as will Archdiocesan elementary schools in the city.

» READ MORE: Philly schools will have a delayed opening on Tuesday

Expect several days of so-called black ice, as the daytime melt refreezes on paved surfaces, something that was evident late Monday afternoon. Melting occurs at temperatures well below freezing: The late-January sun is more powerful than probably most people realize.

What are the chances that Philly hits zero for the first time since 1994?

It’s not “impossible” that temperatures at Philadelphia International Airport make a run at hitting zero for the first time in 31 years, said Alex Staarmann, meteorologist at the weather service Mount Holly office. However, that is a long shot.

The likelihood of that happening would have been higher had five or six inches of refrigerating snow landed Sunday, he said, but the official total was two inches, and that was all but certain to flatten to an inch or less rather quickly with winds eroding the snow cover.

That said, snow is generously layered across much of the region. The weather service reported totals of three to six inches in the city’s neighboring counties to the north and west; two to three inches in the city, northern Delaware, and nearby South Jersey; and less to the south and east.

Especially at night, the snow is going to have a chilling effect on what already is an air mass plenty cold in its own right. With clear skies and light winds, any daytime warmth captured by snow escapes rapidly into space after sunset.

Staarmann said the best chance for a goose-egg at PHL would be early Thursday, when conditions may be ideal. Winds will be frisky Tuesday morning, and cloud cover is expected early Wednesday as the Gulf storm slides off the Atlantic coast.

What are the chances of more snow in the Philly region?

    Nothing is imminent.

That Gulf Coast storm may stay so far south that it spares even Atlanta, said Dave Dombek, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather Inc., as the cold, dry air suppresses the storm track.

Temperatures are due to moderate on the weekend, climbing well into the 30s by Saturday and perhaps reaching 40 on Sunday, close to normal. However another system may affect the region with rain or snow late in the weekend, Dombek said.

Then, computer models favor another cold shot at the end of the month, he said.

In the short term, expect temperatures the next three days to average 15 to 20 degrees below normals with icing increasing on area streams.

Does the ice on Philly-area waterways pose any threat?

“It’s been awhile since we’ve seen so much ice on the area’s waterways,” said Sarah Johnson, the weather service warning coordination meteorologist in Mount Holly, adding that the Rancocas Creek in South Jersey was ice-covered. Ice also has developed on the Schuylkill.

Ice-jamming can create natural dams and exacerbate flooding during rainstorms when the weather has turned milder.

Although icing isn’t an immediate threat, it is possible that the cold spell this week could increase ice buildup, said Elena MacFarlande, hydrologist with the weather service’s Middle Atlantic Forecast Center, in State College, and bears watching.

Fortunately, said Dombek, no dramatic thawing is expected within the next 10 days, although the European forecast model was “hinting” at a significant warmup in early February, circa Groundhog Day.

One historical note regarding Anchorage and Philadelphia

Sunday’s high up that way wasn’t close to a daily record. That distinction belongs to Jan. 20, 1961, when it reached 50 degrees.

As so often happens when the cold empties out of Alaska, it slides this way. On that date, Philadelphians awoke to more than a foot of snow in the heart of one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record.

Philadelphia Weather Forecast: Cold After Snow

The recent snowfall in Philadelphia has left the city covered in a blanket of white, but now residents are bracing for the cold temperatures that are expected to follow. The National Weather Service is predicting below freezing temperatures for the next few days, with overnight lows dropping into the single digits.

As the snow begins to melt, icy conditions are likely to form on the roads and sidewalks, making travel hazardous for pedestrians and drivers alike. Residents are advised to use caution when venturing outside and to dress warmly in layers to protect against the frigid temperatures.

With the potential for more snow in the forecast, it looks like Philadelphia is in for a chilly start to the new year. Stay safe and stay warm, everyone!

Bradley Cooper’s love of the Philadelphia Eagles seems to have rubbed off on girlfriend Gigi Hadid as they were both spotted at the team’s most recent game.

The couple attended the Eagles’ NFL playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams in Philadelphia on Sunday, January 19. Both Cooper, 50, and Hadid, 29, were seen screaming in excitement during the outing, cheering for the home team, according to a fan video shared via TikTok.

Cooper wore an Eagles bomber jacket and grey pants while rooting for his favorite franchise from box seats. (The team won 28-22 in a snow-filled battle to remain in the hunt for Super Bowl LIX.)

Hadid opted for a chicer ensemble, sporting a letterman-style green and blue jacket — the team colors are traditionally green, black, silver and white, but they’ve also worn Kelly green, blue and yellow — a matching green scarf, black jeans, a gold belt and black gloves.

  • Dangerously cold temperatures in Philly, Pa. suburbs this week – NBC10 Philadelphia

As the snow moves out of the Philadelphia region, frigid conditions are settling in.

The drop in temperatures began Sunday night with highs in the low 20s leading to icy overnight road conditions.

The bitter cold will continue in the Philadelphia area Monday morning and last through Thursday. Monday’s high will only be in the mid-20s and wind chills will remain near zero to only five above throughout the day.

The cold will only get worse on Tuesday with wind chills of -15 degrees possible in the morning. Exposed skin under those temperatures can freeze in 20 minutes so be sure to wear plenty of layers if you have to be outside at any time. There won’t be much of a warmup during the day on Tuesday with highs in the upper teens as well as the chance for snow flurries later in the day.

Wednesday will be just as cold with highs in the upper teens during the day. On Thursday, temperatures will be in the single digits in the Philadelphia area in the morning before rising to the upper 20s in the afternoon.

Friday we’ll finally see some relief from the dangerously cold conditions with highs in the low 30s. The “warmup” continues into the weekend with a high of 35 on Saturday and a high of 40 degrees on Sunday.

    Preparing for the cold

The last time it got this cold was Christmas Eve 2022. This kind of cold can freeze pipes, so it’s wise to prepare now if that’s been an issue for you before.

With this wave of dangerously cold weather coming next week, now is a good time to make sure your pipes are protected from freezing.

To protect your home, some tips to avoid pipes freezing include:

    • Insulating unheated areas
    • Covering pipes that are exposed
    • Opening bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors to let warm air flow in

Officials released a list of warming centers in Philadelphia to provide relief to the city’s homeless during the bitter cold.

  • What is record for most AFC or NFC championship games in a row? – NBC10 Philadelphia

If the Kansas City Chiefs making the AFC Championship Game feels familiar, that’s because it is.

Patrick Mahomes’ team is headed to the title game for the seventh consecutive season after defeating the Houston Texans in the divisional round on Saturday.

While the Chiefs’ consistency has been impressive, they are still short of the all-time record. That belongs to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, whose run ended as the Chiefs’ began in the 2018 season.

Those two franchises stand above the rest in terms of longevity. There have only been seven instances where a team made at least four straight AFC or NFC title games. Here’s a full breakdown of those squads:

    Patriots: 8 (2011-2018)

    AFC Championship Game record: 5-3

    Super Bowl record: 3-2

After winning three Super Bowls early in his career, the second half of Brady’s Patriots career was just as impressive. He added three more rings and the record eight straight title game appearances, culminating in a road victory over Mahomes before winning his sixth of seven Super Bowls — and his last in New England.

    Chiefs: 7 (2018-2024)

AFC Championship Game record: 4-2 (seventh game set for Sunday)

    Super Bowl record: 3-1

Mahomes is keeping pace with Brady despite losing an AFC title game and Super Bowl to his teams during this run. Kansas City will host the title game next weekend for the sixth time in seven years, while the Patriots were only at home five times in their eight-year run. The Chiefs could be the first NFL team to ever win three straight Super Bowls.

After defeating the Houston Texans in a divisional round on Saturday. The Chiefs are headed to the AFC Championship game for the 7th straight year.

    Raiders: 5 (1973-1977)

    AFC Championship Game record: 1-4

    Super Bowl record: 1-0

Head coach John Madden turned the Raiders into a perennial contender, making the AFC title game seven times in his 10 years as coach. This was their best stretch, despite the fact that they came up short four out of five times. Their one victory came in 1976, when Oakland went 13-1 and rolled to a Super Bowl win with quarterback Ken Stabler.

    Eagles: 4 (2001-2004)

    NFC Championship Game record: 1-3

    Super Bowl record: 0-1

Before Andy Reid led the Chiefs to seven straight AFC title games, he had a run of four straight NFC title games with the Philadelphia Eagles. The head coach relied on quarterback Donovan McNabb and a dominant defense, but it took three straight losses before finally breaking through in 2004 — only to lose the Super Bowl to Brady’s Patriots.

    Cowboys: 4 (1992-1995)

    NFC Championship Game record: 3-1

    Super Bowl record: 3-0

The Dallas Cowboys‘ run of the 1990s was one of the best in NFL history. Head coach Jimmy Johnson led them to back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993 before Barry Switzer took over and won another ring in 1995. The trio of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin helped create an unstoppable offense.

    Bills: 4 (1990-1993)

    AFC Championship Game record: 4-0

    Super Bowl record: 0-4

This one still has to hurt — a perfect 4-0 record in AFC title games, only to lose the big game every single time. The Bills were loaded with talent during this era (Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith), but they ran into some stiff competition from the NFC.

    Cowboys: 4 (1967-1970)

    NFC Championship Game record: 2-2

    Super Bowl record: 1-1

The Cowboys were the first team to make four straight title games during this run by head coach Tom Landry. It began with a Super Bowl loss in 1967, followed by the franchise’s first Super Bowl win in 1968 before consecutive NFC title game losses to close out the stretch.

  • How the Eagles found their identity – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Throughout the season, head coach Nick Sirianni has been taking the opportunity during team meetings to show video clips of plays that embody the Eagles’ physicality.

All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun has a favorite.

“The Cooper DeJean on Derrick Henry, for sure,” Baun said. “That’s the epitome of who we’re trying to be and what we’re trying to do.”

Back in Week 13, the Eagles’ rookie nickel cornerback forcefully slammed the 250-pound running back into the turf in Baltimore. It didn’t matter that Henry out-weighed DeJean by 50 pounds, it didn’t matter that DeJean was a rookie, it didn’t matter that he’s a corner.

DeJean still delivered a highlight-worthy hit.

“When you talk about physicality, you think about defensive line and offensive line and running backs and linebackers,” Baun explained. “But when you got DBs doing stuff like that, it sends a message to the team. You see (Darius) Slay getting in there, you see Quinyon (Mitchell) up at the line of scrimmage, Reed (Blankenship is) coming and flying downhill. It’s awesome to see.”

The Eagles’ physicality this season stands out. Early in the year, the team was looking for an identity and they found it. On offense and defense, these Eagles are going to hit you in the mouth. When you play them, you’re going to feel it on the field and the next day.

    This team is a bully.

“We are a physical, nasty group of motherf—ers,” Sirianni said to his team in the locker room after their 22-10 win over the Packers in the wild-card round.

Obviously, being a tough and physical team starts with having tough and physical players. For that, general manager Howie Roseman and his staff deserve credit. The Eagles have been looking for a type and Roseman has delivered.

But the Eagles’ insistence on physicality goes beyond the player acquisition phase. There has been a preoccupation with physicality and the added emphasis from the coaching staff hammers home the mission. There’s a reason why Sirianni wants the entire team to sit down and watch these types of physical plays on tape.

“Yeah, we talk about a tough football team,” Sirianni said this week. “What we talk about with tough is the physical part of the game, the blocking, the block destruction, the tackling within the fundamentals. We talk about relentless effort to the football, because that’s a form of toughness. And we talk about mental toughness of being able to play the next play.

“Obviously, my best experience with being good at those things is because of, exactly what you said, the guys that are in this building. But any time as a coach that you’re trying to reinforce things that you really admire and want for the program and for the culture, you enforce those things on tape. So in our tape today and in our tape every day, to be quite frank – we talk about this every day and every time we have a team meeting, we talk about it.

“We will put our physical plays up there. We will put our relentless effort plays up there. We will put our mental toughness plays up there to reinforce it, good, bad. Just so it’s always on our mind. So, yeah, can’t say enough of how tough our team is, in all three of those phases: physical, mental and effort.”

You can argue the Eagles’ transformation to being this physically-imposing team happened as they came back from the early Week 5 bye. That’s at least when the offense really began to step on the necks of defenses.

After a 2-2 start, a few offensive linemen went to Sirianni and asked for the offense to lean on them, Saquon Barkley and the run game. Since then, the Eagles have had one of the best rushing attacks in football and Barkley went over the 2,000-yard mark. They get to impose their will every game and it obviously takes physicality to do that.

“When you’re able to do that, yeah, you can wear down defenders,” Lane Johnson said. “Sometimes it doesn’t work immediately but as the game goes on, you can see some huge chunks, some huge games in the run game from guys getting tired, worn down or missing assignments. It basically wears them down.”

Dallas Goedert, when asked about the physicality of the team, immediately pointed at the O-line and said pretty much all five of those guys have ended up making a play that gets shown to the entire team. Jordan Mailata made a block on the front of an inside zone run last week that stood out to him. And then there’s big Mekhi Becton punishing linebackers a the second level. And Johnson, Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens have all made those types of plays in their Pro Bowl seasons.

The Eagles’ physicality doesn’t end with their linemen.

“I think it starts there,” said Goedert, who had a beastly play last week with a few stiff-arms on his way into the end zone. “And I think the offensive line also loves when somebody else is doing it. Smitty (DeVonta Smith), he’s excellent at finishing on the sidelines. Saquon with his powerful runs. I think that’s really contagious when people play physical.”

The cool thing is that there are a bunch of those types of plays this season and everyone seems to have a favorite.

While DeJean’s hit on Henry from the Ravens game might top the list, DeJean said his favorite actually came against the Packers last week when Nolan Smith took on pulling tackle Elgton Jenkins and Nakobe Dean played the insert block to stop the Packers for a short gain.

DeJean liked that one so much because it wasn’t just one guy being physical. It was a group effort.

As long as the Eagles make these types of plays, Sirianni is going to show them in front of the entire team. And as long as Sirianni shows them in front of the entire team, players are going to keep trying to make them.

“Everybody gets pretty excited when we see those plays,” DeJean said. “You can really see with the guys we have in the building that that’s how everybody wants to play the game. To be the most physical team on the field. That’s something that’s been talked about since training camp.”
