  • Pierre scores 16 as Providence beats Seton Hall 69-67

NEWARK, N.J. — Jayden Pierre scored 16 points as Providence beat Seton Hall 69-67 on Tuesday night.

Pierre shot 6 for 9, including 3 for 5 from beyond the arc for the Friars (11-10, 5-5 Big East Conference). Jabri Abdur-Rahim scored 13 points, going 4 of 7 (3 for 5 from 3-point range). Bensley Joseph shot 3 of 5 from the field, including 2 for 3 from 3-point range, and went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points.

Prince Aligbe led the way for the Pirates (6-15, 1-9) with 19 points and two steals. Dylan Addae-Wusu added 13 points and four steals for Seton Hall. Garwey Dual also put up 13 points, four assists and three steals. The loss is the sixth in a row for the Pirates.

Providence went into the half leading Seton Hall 30-26. Pierre put up 10 points in the half. Providence turned an eight-point second-half lead into a 15-point advantage with a 7-0 run to make it a 44-29 lead about 4 1/2 minutes into the half. Abdur-Rahim scored 10 second-half points in the victory.

Providence guard David Duke had a game-high 16 points as the Friars held on to defeat Seton Hall 69-67 in a thrilling Big East matchup. The victory was a crucial one for Providence, who improved to 8-6 in conference play and bolstered their NCAA Tournament resume.

Pierre showed off his scoring ability throughout the game, knocking down key shots and free throws down the stretch to secure the win. The Friars also received strong contributions from Nate Watson, who finished with 14 points, and A.J. Reeves, who added 12 points off the bench.

Seton Hall put up a tough fight, with Sandro Mamukelashvili leading the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. The Pirates had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but a missed shot at the buzzer sealed the victory for Providence.

The win was a statement victory for the Friars, who have now won five of their last six games and are peaking at the right time as the postseason approaches. With only a few games left in the regular season, Providence looks to continue their strong play and make a run in the Big East Tournament.

  • Women’s College Basketball Player of the Year Rankings: Lauren Betts, Khamil Pierre

For the past few months, we’ve been ranking potential women’s college basketball Player of the Year candidates. At this point, it seems like Juju Watkins and Hannah Hidalgo are at the front of the conversation. Yet, there are a few players who seem to be overlooked in a few ways. Let’s talk about a few.

Khamil Pierre, the sophomore leader of the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team, is having a fantastic season. Up to 22.3 points per game compared to her 8.9 average in her freshman season, Pierre is a force on the court. She averages 10.2 rebounds per game as well, in the 99th percentile nationwide. She also boasts defensive power, averaging 3.1 steals per game and a 75.5 defensive rating.

So what’s stopping Pierre from being in the POTY conversation? At this rate, it seems like team ranking is the factor. Vanderbilt has flirted on the edge of the top 25 all year long. It looked like they were poised to jump up at the end of non-conference play, but the SEC had different plans. Vanderbilt has lost three of their last four, to Kentucky, Ole Miss, and LSU consecutively before achieving a one-point victory over Tennessee. The team is now at 15-4 on the season, and their unranked status could be why Pierre isn’t mentioned as much as other players with similar stats.

Lauren Betts has been crucial to Nfo.1 UCLA’s dominance this season. The program was boosted into the top spot after beating South Carolina and ending their 43-game winning streak. They are still undefeated at 17-0 at this moment. Betts is averaging 19.7 points per game, shooting 61.7 percent from the field and grabs 9.9 rebounds per game. She has a defensive rating of 71.7 (99th percentile) and an offensive rating of 123.2 (98th percentile). Her 296 points this season are in the 98th percentile among players.

So Betts has the stats, and her team is ranked No.1 in the country … why isn’t she a top candidate for Player of the Year? Well, she’s definitely not low on the list — but she isn’t up there with the Watkins and Hidalgos. It may be that she is just “middle of the pack” — overall her stats are great. Yet she doesn’t top the rankings for points per game, rebounds per game, win shares, usage rate, etc.

Ta’Niya Latson has an impressive resume this season — 26.6 points per game, 4.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.7 steals. Shooting 49.6 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from 3-point range. 478 total points on the season, top-10 in Win Shares, 121.1 offensive rating (97th percentile). 37.6 percent usage rate on a 15-4 Florida State team.

Florida State has been in and out of the rankings all season. They are fifth in the ACC at the moment and have recent losses to Cal and Stanford. While Latson herself is putting up impressive numbers, it doesn’t seem like the team has enough buzz to get her into these POTY conversations. She definitely should be in the conversation for ACC Player of the Year, but Notre Dame is also in the ACC and Hannah Hidalgo may have that one locked.

With the 2022 Women’s College Basketball season in full swing, it’s time to take a look at the top contenders for Player of the Year honors. Two players who have been standout performers this season are Lauren Betts and Khamil Pierre.

Lauren Betts, a freshman center for the Stanford Cardinal, has been turning heads with her dominant play on both ends of the court. Standing at 6’7″, Betts is a force in the paint, averaging a double-double with points and rebounds. Her shot-blocking ability has also been a game-changer for Stanford’s defense, making her a key player in their success this season.

On the other hand, Khamil Pierre, a senior guard for the UConn Huskies, has been lighting up the scoreboard with her scoring prowess. Pierre is averaging over 20 points per game and has been a consistent threat from beyond the arc. Her leadership on and off the court has been instrumental in UConn’s success this season, making her a strong contender for Player of the Year honors.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Betts and Pierre continue to perform and if they can solidify their spots as top contenders for Player of the Year. Stay tuned for more updates on the race for the Women’s College Basketball Player of the Year title.

Aaron Pierre has a pretty good 2024 between leading the action thriller Rebel Ridge, which can be streamed with a Netflix subscription, and voicing the title character of Mufasa: The Lion King, which is now playing in theaters. As the cherry on top of the proverbial sundae, though, he was also cast to play John Stewart in Lanterns, the Green Lantern-focused series set in the new DC Universe franchise. I’m already intrigued about what Lanterns has in store, but after hearing about Pierre’s early introduction to Stewart, I’m even more hopeful about his take on the character in the upcoming DC TV show.

After admitting in an interview with EW that he hasn’t seen Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie, which failed to impress critically or commercially when it was released in 2011, Pierre stated that he was exposed to John Stewart early on from one of the best animated TV shows of all time. In his words:

I think Justice League Unlimited might have been one of my first introductions to John Stewart.

He’s definitely not alone in having learned about John Stewart from Justice League Unlimited or its Justice League predecessor, voiced by Phil LaMarr in both. Although Stewart has been part of DC Comics lore since he was introduced in the pages of Green Lantern #87 in the early 1970s, it was the Justice League animated series, which premiered in 2001, that he became a mainstream DC character. Although Hal Jordan is traditionally depicted as the Green Lantern who helps form the Justice League, the DC Animated Universe went with Stewart instead. This in turn led to John Stewart’s profile increasing in the comics.

The John Stewart Green Lantern in Justice League Unlimited

The John Stewart Green Lantern in Justice League Unlimited

So not only were Justice League and Justice League Unlimited great ways for viewers to learn about John Stewart, for a lot of DC fans, he is their main Green Lantern. So it’s about time that this emerald ring-slinger finally makes his live-action debit, although there had been plans for Wayne T. Carr to play the character in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. If Aaron Pierre’s take on Stewart pulls from Phil LaMarr’s version in any significant way, then that will give me one more thing to appreciate from Lanterns.

Pierre will star in Lanterns opposite Kyle Chandler, who’s playing Hal Jordan, the veteran Green Lantern showing rookie John Stewart the ropes. The two protectors of Sector 2814 will be investigating a murder in the American heartland, and this mystery will end up factoring into the main DC Universe storyline. Pierre and Chandler’s Lanterns cast-mates include Kelly McDonald, Garrett Dillahunt and Poorna Jagannathan. Ozark’s Chris Mundy is serving as showrunner and writing alongside Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and longtime DC Comics writer Tom King, who’s especially pleased with the Hal and John castings.

Lanterns will begin filming in early 2025 and is expected to premiere on HBO around the same time as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is released in theaters. If you’re looking to enjoy DC Universe-related content now, use your Max subscription to stream Creature Commandos.

After Lanterns Star Aaron Pierre Discussed His Early Introduction To John Stewart, I’m Getting Even More Hopeful About His Take On Green Lantern

Aaron Pierre, known for his role in the hit TV series “Krypton,” recently opened up about his early introduction to the character of John Stewart, also known as Green Lantern. In a recent interview, Pierre shared how he first discovered the character through the Justice League animated series and how he was instantly drawn to the character’s complexity and depth.

As a long-time fan of the Green Lantern comics, I have been eagerly anticipating Pierre’s take on the character. His passion for the role and his understanding of the character’s history and significance in the DC Universe has only increased my excitement for his portrayal.

With Pierre’s dedication to bringing John Stewart to life in a way that honors the character’s legacy while also bringing something fresh and new to the table, I have no doubt that he will do justice to one of DC’s most iconic superheroes.

I can’t wait to see Aaron Pierre shine as Green Lantern on the big screen and bring this beloved character to a whole new generation of fans. Here’s to hoping for an epic and unforgettable portrayal of John Stewart in the upcoming Lanterns movie.
