The Kansas City Royals were hoping that a former All-Star could recapture some magic in 2024, and it unfortunately didn’t pan out.
Adam Frazier, a utility man whose primary position has typically been second base, signed a one-year deal with the Royals last winter that included an $8.5 million mutual option for 2025. Frazier was so bad, though, that the Royals exercised a $2.5 million buyout to get him off the roster.
With a .202/.282/.294 slash line in 104 games this season, Frazier was one of the worst hitters not only on the Royals, but in Major League Baseball. Entering his age-33 season, the nine-year veteran is now hoping to cling on long enough to earn his full pension at 10 years of service time.
Fortunately, one of Frazier’s former teams is hoping he can rekindle that old magic in the same uniform he once starred in.
On Tuesday, Frazier reportedly agreed to a one-year, major league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team he made an All-Star appearance for in 2021. The deal virtually guarantees him a spot on the Pirates’ Opening Day roster.

Frazier spent the first five-and-a-half seasons of his career in Pittsburgh, racking up 10.5 bWAR in 608 games. 2021 was by far his best year, especially in the first half, before he was traded to the San Diego Padres. He slashed .324/.388/.448 in 98 games with the Pirates that year.
Since the start of 2022, though, Frazier has played 401 games with a .632 OPS. At his best, he’s a serviceable bench/utility player, like he was for the 2023 Baltimore Orioles, but at his worst, he’s borderline unplayable.
The Royals, for their part, simply have to hope they have more success with this year’s crop of utility signings (looking at you, Cavan Biggio) than Frazier had in Kansas City.

If the oddsmakers’ predictions hold true, the near future looks bright for Creighton. They and the Seton Hall Pirates will face off in a Big East battle at 1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at CHI Health Center Omaha. The timing is sure in the Bluejays’ favor as the squad sits on five straight wins at home while the Pirates have been banged up by seven consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.
Last Tuesday, Creighton got the win against DePaul by a conclusive 73-49.
Creighton’s success was spearheaded by the efforts of Ryan Kalkbrenner, who posted 13 points plus eight rebounds and four blocks, and Jamiya Neal, who earned 14 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Kalkbrenner has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last four times he’s played.
Creighton was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as DePaul only racked up ten.
Meanwhile, Seton Hall ended up a good deal behind Marquette on Tuesday and lost 76-59.
Seton Hall’s defeat came about despite a quality game from Isaiah Coleman, who almost dropped a double-double on 27 points and nine rebounds. What’s more, Coleman also posted a 64.3% field goal percentage, which is the highest he’s posted since back in February of 2024.
Creighton has been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. As for Seton Hall, their loss dropped their record down to 6-13.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Creighton has been crazy accurate this season, having made 47.2% of their field goals per game. It’s a different story for Seton Hall, though, as they’ve only made 40.8% of their field goals this season. Given Creighton’s sizable advantage in that area, Seton Hall will need to find a way to close that gap.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a film that, by rights, shouldn’t have succeeded. The swashbuckling pirate movie was bereft of life at the time, with the infamous debacle that is 1995’s Cutthroat Island delivering the final blow. There was little in the way of buzz, only doomsayers preemptively throwing the film onto the burning heap of fire that was their failed attempts at turning their famed theme park attractions into live-action features (The Country Bears, we hardly knew ye). It was also the first Walt Disney Studios movie to be rated PG-13, a bold move, no matter how ridiculous it may sound (and it does), for a studio that prides itself on entertainment for the whole family.
Yet the film defied the naysayers’ gloomy predictions to emerge as a huge hit, landing in the top 5 of the worldwide box office earnings for 2003 and launching Depp into the stratosphere with his iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. The film was a savvy mix of excellent casting, fun, bold set pieces, a winning (and original) screenplay, and a straightforward, easily understandable narrative. More importantly, it had a healthy balance of screen time for the characters. But with each sequential film in the franchise, the narrative grew increasingly convoluted, and while Jack Sparrow was a huge part of the first film’s success, Disney made the mistake of attributing a larger portion of that success to the character as opposed to those other key elements, and increased Sparrow’s presence in its sequels. Soon, songs were being sung, hearts were in boxes, ships were in a mirror world, or something, and Sparrow’s antics became tiresome.
‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ Can Succeed Without Sparrow
Long story short, Disney took what was a secondary character, a spectacular one at that, and ruined him with a promotion. There’s little doubt that announcing the return of Depp to the franchise would initially be met with roaring approval, but little doubt again that moviegoers would remember how tired they were of the same shtick over and over again. But is there a Pirates of the Caribbean without the one character who has been present throughout? You bet. It goes back to those lessons that should have been learned from the first film. Jack Sparrow may have drawn the moviegoers in, but they stayed because the story and its execution was perfect.
The franchise didn’t fall apart when the likes of Geoffrey Rush‘s Barbossa, Orlando Bloom‘s Will Turner, or Keira Knightley‘s Elizabeth Swann weren’t on-screen, so the franchise has already proven it doesn’t need its main players to succeed. In fact, it could be argued that their absence for a time made their return to the franchise later on that much better. Absence, as they say, makes the heart grow fonder, and in the case of Sparrow, his absence in a sixth film would give the franchise the opportunity to right the ship with a new cast and a new, unrelated story, one that brings back the fun, simplicity, and excitement of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It would also lend itself to a “new” Captain Jack Sparrow, if you will, a supporting character that complements the story with his antics, maybe an Aliens‘ William Hudson (Bill Paxton) type, a mouthy, but funny, hothead adept at drawing trouble. Disney should remember the gamble they took with the first film and how it paid off, and approach a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film with that same moxie instead of playing it safe. Set sail for new horizons, ye scurvy dogs of Disney. There could be buried treasure waiting.

The Pirates had put together a package that included 30 years’ worth of season tickets behind home plate at PNC Park and the chance to play a softball game on the field in exchange for the card.
Skenes’ girlfriend, LSU gymnast and influencer Livvy Dunne, also offered the card’s owner the opportunity to take in a game with her in a luxury suite at the ballpark during one of Skenes’ starts.
While the collector wrote in a journal entry shared by Topps that nabbing the card was a “ dream come true,” that dream apparently did not include spending the next three decades attending games at PNC Park.
The team posted on X after the decision that it was “bummed” but offered to have the fan at a game sometime during the 2025 season.
Fanatics Collect, which will handle the auctioning of the card in March, said it will donate its proceeds from the sale to fire relief funds in the Los Angeles area.
The card could hold pretty high value considering the potentially bright future ahead for the 22-year-old Skenes, who finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting following a outstanding rookie season.
Skenes said over the weekend he hasn’t thought about the potential of signing a long-term contract to remain in Pittsburgh, saying instead that his focus is on helping the Pirates take a step toward contending in 2025. He is eligible for free agency after the 2029 season.
