  • Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart setting high defensive bar for Jalen Duren

Isaiah Stewart, the young center for the Detroit Pistons, has been making waves with his stellar defensive play this season. His shot-blocking ability, rebounding prowess, and overall defensive intensity have set a high bar for rookie Jalen Duren, who was recently drafted by the Pistons.

Stewart’s tenacity on the defensive end has been a key factor in the Pistons’ improved performance this season. He has shown an ability to protect the rim, defend the pick-and-roll, and switch onto smaller players with ease. His energy and effort on defense have been infectious, inspiring his teammates to raise their own defensive intensity.

Jalen Duren, the highly-touted rookie out of Memphis, has big shoes to fill in terms of defensive impact. However, with Stewart as a mentor and role model, there is no doubt that Duren has the potential to become a defensive force in the NBA.

As the Pistons continue to develop their young core, Stewart’s defensive prowess will be a cornerstone of their success. And with Duren looking up to him and learning from him, the future looks bright for Detroit’s defense.

  • Pistons vs Hawks Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

With the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks being neighbors in the Eastern Conference standings, there’s much to pay attention to in this matchup and with Onyeka Okongwu taking a spot in the starting lineup; it’s time to see how it all plays out for the home team.

Photo By – Imagn Images. Pictured: Atlanta Hawks forward Onyeka Okongwu (17) against the Phoenix Suns at Footprint Center.

Just a half-game separates the Atlanta Hawks and Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference standings, and that sets the stage for tonight’s clash, which could have playoff tiebreaker implications down the road.

The backcourt battle between Trae Young and Cade Cunningham is the headline act here, but my Pistons vs. Hawks predictions point to Atlanta’s recent line-up switch being another decisive factor.

Take a closer look at this January 22 matchup with my NBA picks and betting angles.

    Pistons vs Hawks prediction

    My best bet
Onyeka Okongwu Over 22.5 points + rebounds (-110 at bet365)

    My analysis

It feels long overdue, but the Atlanta Hawks have finally made the line-up adjustment that’s felt inevitable for the past few years – with Quin Snyder moving solid veteran Clint Capela to the bench in favor of livewire Onyeka Okongwu.

Okongwu has been a steady bench contributor throughout his four-and-a-half seasons in Atlanta, but his athleticism is a better fit with the Hawks’ starting group and he seized his chance against the New York Knicks on Monday with 14 points and nine rebounds.

I expect more of the same tonight against the Detroit Pistons. Okongwu has gone past this points + rebounds combo line in four straight games and, as a starter, his minutes should stay closer to 30 than 20, giving him ample opportunities to pump up his stats.

Detroit presents challenges on the boards, largely with Jalen Duren’s relentless energy, but that should keep Okongwu around the rim rather than roaming the perimeter, so double-digit rebounds are in play.

The Atlanta power forward also brings far more offensive upside than Capela. He’s an efficient finisher around the rim, including as a lob target for Trae Young, and he’s even made three of his last five 3-pointers as he expands his range.

Next to Jalen Johnson (questionable) and Dyson Daniels, Okongwu can also give the Hawks’ defense a boost, and he’s well placed to hit this Over in his new starting role.

    Pistons vs Hawks same-game parlay

Onyeka Okongwu Over 22.5 points + rebounds

    Hawks moneyline

    Cade Cunningham Over 2.5 3-pointers

There’s not much to choose between two teams on the rise, but I’m taking the Atlanta moneyline for my SGP and trusting in a fast-paced Hawks offense that’s sixth in the NBA in points per game and third in both field-goal attempts and free-throw attempts.

The hosts have won seven of the last eight matchups against the Pistons, and they’re 11-7 at State Farm Arena this season. Atlanta is also coming off impressive wins over the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics last week.

Jalen Johnson’s availability is the biggest question mark for me, so soon after returning from a shoulder issue, but I expect the Hawks to find enough points either way.

I’m also riding the hot hand with a Cade Cunningham prop. He’s playing at an All-Star level as the engine for this Detroit offense, and that includes a 40% mark from downtown so far in January (up from 34% in December).

Cade has knocked down two or more 3-pointers in seven of his 11 contests this month, and he should be able to shoot over Young and Daniels in tonight’s showdown. Sign me up for the Over on 2.5 made triples here.

  • Pistons vs. Hawks preview: Battle for the 6th seed in Atlanta

Who would have thought that the Pistons would be playing meaningful games in late-January and talking about whether they should be buyers at the trade deadline? After an impressive win over the Rockets on Monday, the Pistons have a chance to take down another playoff team on the road in Atlanta.

Although we are still a couple months away from the playoffs, this game can put the Pistons up 2-0 on the season series against the Hawks and move them into the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference playoff standings. The seeding obviously doesn’t matter at this point in the season, but the head-to-head standings could come into play as both teams are looking to be heading to a similar record on the season.

In the last matchup with the Hawks, the Pistons narrowly came out victorious after blowing a huge lead. Let’s not have that happen again.

    Game Vitals

Where: State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA
When: Wednesday, January 22 at 7:30 pm EST
Watch: Fan Duel Sports Network Detroit
    Odds: Hawks (-2.5)

    Analysis

After earning the number 1 overall pick, many people expected the Hawks to enter a full-on rebuild. Instead, they reworked the roster around Trae Young and breakout star, Jalen Johnson, and find themselves fighting for a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. You can look at the Hawks record and say that they are basically the same as last year’s team, but this team is much better equipped for the future with young players with upside and solid veterans around them.

The Pistons are in the same boat, although they went through the absolute lowest point you can go to get here. This should be a fun game between two up-and-coming Eastern Conference teams.

The Hawks will be without number one overall pick, Zaccharie Risacher due to injury and could also be without Jalen Johnson due to a shoulder injury. He is currently listed as a questionable, but I am going to assume that he will end up playing as it will make this a far more interesting game.

Trae Young is having an All Star caliber season just like Cade Cunningham is as he leads the league in Assists and is averaging 23.3 points per game, albeit on lower shooting percentages than Cade. Funnily enough, both players average 4.5 turnover per game.

Cade Cunningham and Trae Young are both the engine of the offense of their respective teams, but Young does have a little bit better of a supporting cast with Jalen Johnson being better than anybody else on the Pistons’ roster.

If Johnson does play, I would expect Ausar Thompson to get the chance to guard him as slowing him down has been a challenge for a lot of teams this season. He is currently sporting averages of 19.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists while also being a high-end defender.

The Hawks also have another high-end defender in Dyson Daniels, who leads the league in steals. Given how turnover prone Cade Cunningham is and the lack of defense that Trae Young provides, I would expect Daniels to spend most of his night trying to slow down Cade. In the last matchup, Cade only had 22 points and Dyson Daniels had 7 steals and played a huge role in the Hawks’ near comeback.

Jalen Duren is coming off arguably his best game of the season against the Rockets where he outplayed Alperen Sengun. When the opposing team’s center is not a high volume 3-point shooter, Jalen Duren does much better on defense, so hopefully he can keep his strong play going against Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu. He won’t have the athletic advantage against those two like he did against Sengun, but neither player are taking a ton of 3s, so he won’t have to play out on the perimeter as much.

The Pistons just came out victorious against one of the best defensive teams in the league in the Houston Rockets, and although the Hawks have some solid defensive players, they are not anywhere near the level defensively as the Rockets. This game very much could come down to which of the All Star hopefuls steps up more. If Jalen Johnson does not play, that would help the Pistons a ton in trying to get another impressive win on the road.

    Lineups

Atlanta Hawks (22-20): Trae Young, Dyson Daniels, Vit Krejci, Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu

Detroit Pistons (22-21): Cade Cunningham, Tim Hardaway Jr, Ausar Thompson, Tobias Harris, Jalen Duren

    Question of the Day

Who has the better All Star case between Trae Young and Cade Cunningham?

The Detroit Pistons will travel to Atlanta to take on the Hawks in a crucial matchup for playoff positioning. Both teams are currently fighting for the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference, making this game a must-win for both sides.

The Pistons are coming off a tough loss to the Brooklyn Nets, but have been playing well lately with key contributions from Jerami Grant and rookie sensation Cade Cunningham. They will need their top players to step up and lead the charge against the high-flying Hawks.

Meanwhile, the Hawks have been up and down this season but have shown flashes of their potential with Trae Young leading the way. They will look to secure a win at home and gain some ground in the playoff race.

This game will likely come down to which team can execute their game plan better and make key plays down the stretch. Both teams will be hungry for a win as they battle for playoff positioning, so expect a competitive and intense matchup.

Tune in to see the Pistons take on the Hawks in what promises to be a thrilling showdown for the 6th seed in Atlanta.

  • Houston Rockets Could Be Short a Starter vs Detroit Pistons

With a Monday afternoon matchup between the Houston Rockets and the Detroit Pistons approaching, the home team could be down a starter.

According to the official NBA injury report, the veteran wing Amen Thompson is dealing with calf tightness.

As of Monday morning, the Rockets consider Thompson questionable to play against Detroit.

Recently, Thompson missed his first action in weeks. When the Rockets paid a visit to the Portland Trail Blazers to close out their road trip, Thompson was not on the court.

His absence came after he was tasked with checking in for over 40 minutes in a matchup on the road against the Sacramento Kings. The Rockets lost that matchup by five points.

When the Pistons and the Rockets met earlier this season, Thompson was playing a slightly different role. The sophomore wing was coming off the bench and checked in for 23 minutes.

During that matchup, Thompson shot 2-5 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. He scored eight points while coming down with five rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Since late December, Thompson started transitioning to a starting role on the Rockets, seeing his playing time increase.

Since January 5, Thompson has appeared in six games. He started in all of those matchups and averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.

Sitting second in the Western Conference, the Rockets are looking to improve to 29-13 against the Pistons on Monday. They have a comfortable 2.5 lead over the Memphis Grizzlies in the West.

Meanwhile, the Pistons slid to No. 9 in the Eastern Conference standings on Sunday night. With a 21-21 record, they hope to jump out of a two-game losing streak.

The Houston Rockets Could Be Short a Starter vs Detroit Pistons

The Houston Rockets may be facing a tough challenge in their upcoming game against the Detroit Pistons as they could potentially be without one of their key starters. Reports have surfaced that a crucial player for the Rockets may be sidelined due to injury or personal reasons.

The absence of this starter could have a significant impact on the team’s performance, as they rely heavily on their starting lineup to secure victories. Without this crucial player, the Rockets may struggle to keep up with the Pistons and could face a tough battle on the court.

Fans of the Houston Rockets will be anxiously waiting for updates on the status of this starter and hoping for a speedy recovery or return to the lineup. In the meantime, the team will need to come up with a game plan to overcome this potential setback and secure a win against the Detroit Pistons.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Houston Rockets and their upcoming game against the Detroit Pistons.

The Detroit Pistons will visit the Houston Rockets in a cross-conference NBA MLK Day game on Monday’s NBA schedule. Houston is 28-13 overall and 14-6 at home, while Detroit is 21-21 overall and 11-10 on the road. These franchises have split 150 all-time meetings, with each winning 75 times, and Houston prevailed in their last matchup, 101-99, on Nov. 10. Why the Rockets can cover

The Rockets were the clear victor by a 125-103 margin over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday. Houston got its win on the backs of several key players, but it was Alperen Sengun out in front who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 15 rebounds. Jalen Green led the team in scoring with 26 points, while veteran Dillon Brooks chipped in with 22 points.

Having three players with at least 22 points, as part of six overall in double-figures, depth is a strength of Houston. Its biggest strength, however, is its lockdown defense, which ranks in the top five in a number of categories including points allowed, defensive rating, field goal percentage allowed and 3-pointers made per game. On the other hand, the Rockets get to face a Detroit team which struggles defending the perimeter, as the Pistons allow the third-highest 3-point percentage in the NBA. See which team to back at SportsLine.

    Why the Pistons can cover

Meanwhile, the Pistons were within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap on Saturday as they fell 125-121 to the Phoenix Suns. Despite the loss, Tobias Harris poured in 21 points, with Cade Cunningham dropping a double-double with 20 points and 11 assists. Jalen Duren had another complete stat line for the second game in a row with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as he’ll aim for a double-double for a season-high third straight game tonight versus Houston.

The Pistons have made great strides on both ends of the court, compared to last year, when they ranked in the bottom five in both scoring offense and scoring defense. This season, Detroit is middle-of-the-pack, 15th on offense and 16th on defense, which has enabled the team to already rack up 21 victories after going 14-68 a year ago. Additionally, the Pistons will feel comfortable in opponent territory as their 14-6-1 ATS record on the road is the second-best in the league this season. See which team to back at SportsLine.

How to make Rockets vs. Pistons picks

  • Pistons vs. Rockets preview: MLK Day matinee game

Everybody loves a matchup between the number one and number two picks from the same draft class, but as you move further from the year of that draft, the individual matchup doesn’t mean as much as it did.

When both of these teams were not any good, I think the Jalen Green-Cade Cunningham matchup meant more to both fanbases since there wasn’t much else to root for. Now that Houston is 2nd in the Western Conference and the Pistons are in the playoff race in the East, the Cade Cunningham-Jalen Green showdown isn’t the must-see TV like it once was, it is just a matchup between two good players looking to win a game.

For the Rockets, this is a game against an inferior team with the opportunity to inch closer to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the West, for the Pistons, it is a chance to get back on track after losing their last two games.

    Game Vitals

Where: Toyota Center in Houston, TX
When: Monday, Jan. 20 at 2 pm EST
Watch: Fan Duel Sports Network Detroit
    Odds: Houston (-8.5)

    Analysis

The Rockets are one of the best defensive teams in the league, and that is a huge problem for the turnover-prone Pistons. The Pistons have been better about turning the ball over during their hot stretch to close out 2024 and into 2025, but in their last two games against the Pacers and Suns, the turnover bug has struck back and the Pistons lost both matchups.

It is the case for pretty much any team, but especially so for a team like the Pistons, but it is difficult to win many games when you turn over the ball a lot.

If they want any hope at winning this game, they will have to get the turnovers in check, but they will also have to figure out how to slow down Jalen Green, who is in the midst of one of his best stretches of basketball of his career. Green has had plenty of stretches during his career where he would have a few games where his shots are falling and he looks like the best player from his class, but he would revert to being inefficient for even longer. After a cold start to the season, he appears to finally be putting together the scoring potential that made him the Number 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft.

Another player for the Rockets putting together a breakout stretch of games is Amen Thompson. It could be argued that he is the Rockets’ best player with his ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, but he also doesn’t have to take on as much of an offensive load as somebody like Green or Alperen Sengun.

The last time these two teams faced off it was a low-scoring offensive struggle with a final score of 101-99. At this point in the season, both teams are better offensively, so I would anticipate a bit of a higher scoring game than that, unless the Rockets are able to keep the Pistons’ current turnover struggles going.

This should be a fun game between two up-and-coming young teams. The Rockets are the better team on the surface, but the Pistons have been just as good in January with a 7-3 record compared to the 7-2 record for the Rockets.

The current Pistons are similar to the Rockets last season where they have a team of young players with solid vets playing competitive games every night and fighting for a playoff spot. Hopefully, the Pistons are able to make the leap like the Rockets have next season.

    Lineups

Detroit Pistons (21-21): Cade Cunningham, Tim Hardaway Jr, Ausar Thompson, Tobias Harris, Jalen Duren

Houston Rockets (28-13): Fred VanVleet, Jalen Green, Amen Thompson, Dillon Brooks, Alperen Sengun

    Question of the Day

What has been your biggest takeaway from the first half of the season?

The Detroit Pistons will face off against the Houston Rockets in an exciting matinee game on MLK Day. Both teams will be looking to secure a victory and improve their standing in the league.

The Pistons have been struggling this season, currently sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. They will be looking to turn things around and build some momentum with a win against the Rockets. Key players such as Jerami Grant and Saddiq Bey will need to step up and lead the team to victory.

On the other hand, the Rockets have also had a tough season so far, but they have shown flashes of potential with young players like Jalen Green and Christian Wood. They will be looking to showcase their talent and come out on top against the Pistons.

This MLK Day matchup promises to be an exciting and competitive game, as both teams will be hungry for a win. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Pistons take on the Rockets in this matinee showdown.

  • Detroit Pistons unable to overcome Kevin Durant’s second-half eruption, lose second straight

Detroit — On Saturday, the Detroit Lions had the city in the palm of their hands. Nearly everyone at Little Caesars Arena wore Honolulu blue in preparation for the Lions’ divisional playoff contest against the Washington Commanders. Even All-Star guard Devin Booker had his mind on the Lions’ postseason run, confirming to The Detroit News that he planned to attend the game at Ford Field for the 8 p.m. kickoff.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff wasn’t oblivious to the excitement surrounding the Pistons as the opening act for the highly anticipated game, but his message was simple.

Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham (2) goes to the basket against Phoenix Suns forward Ryan Dunn (0) and center Mason Plumlee, right, during the first half.

“We need to do our job; we understand the juice, the vibe, and the feeling in the city,” Bickerstaff said. “I think our guys are really connected to the city and the fan base, and they understand how energetic the day is with what the Lions are facing and the opportunity they have in front of them. …

The Detroit Pistons fell short once again as they were unable to overcome Kevin Durant’s second-half eruption, ultimately losing their second straight game. Despite a strong start and a close first half, Durant proved to be too much for the Pistons to handle in the second half, leading the Brooklyn Nets to a decisive victory.

Durant, who finished with a game-high 35 points, showcased his scoring prowess and proved why he is considered one of the best players in the league. The Pistons struggled to contain him on the defensive end and were unable to keep up with his offensive firepower.

Despite the loss, the Pistons showed flashes of potential and fought hard until the final buzzer. However, they will need to regroup and make adjustments if they hope to bounce back in their next game.

With this defeat, the Pistons will need to address their defensive shortcomings and find a way to contain elite scorers like Durant if they want to turn their season around. It’s clear that they have work to do, but with a resilient attitude and a commitment to improvement, the Pistons can still salvage their season and compete at a high level in the competitive Eastern Conference.

  • Suns Reveal Bradley Beal’s Final Playing Status vs Detroit Pistons

A Saturday evening matchup between the Phoenix Suns and the Detroit Pistons won’t include Bradley Beal.

According to the official NBA injury report, the Suns have ruled out Beal for the afternoon. Lately, the veteran guard has been dealing with a left ankle sprain.

Beal’s absence doesn’t come as a surprise. When the Suns submitted their injury report on Friday night, Beal was already downgraded to doubtful for the matchup.

The Pistons game will mark the second game in a row Beal will miss action. When the Suns paid a visit to the Washington Wizards two nights ago, Beal was ruled out for the first time since 2025 arrived.

Lately, Beal has taken on a bench role for Phoenix. As the Suns hit a skid to close out 2024, the organization figured a big lineup change could be beneficial. Beal joined the center Jusuf Nurkic in getting moved to the bench.

Just because Beal started coming off of the bench didn’t mean his minutes were going to fade. Through his first six games in that new role, Beal averaged 31 minutes of playing time.

The veteran guard posted an average of 16 points, four assists, and three rebounds. He shot 35 percent from three and 51 percent from the field over that span.

With Beal coming off of the bench, the Suns climbed out of their rut. In that six-game stretch, the Suns won all but two of their games. When they faced the Wizards without Beal against Washington earlier this week, the Suns collected a seven-point win.

The Pistons are looking to get back in the winner’s column against Phoenix on Saturday. After coming up short against the Indiana Pacers, the Pistons are looking to avoid falling back to .500. The two teams will tip-off at 4 PM ET.
