  • Tigers Trade Right-Handed Pitcher Alex Faedo to the Rays

After coming to terms on a deal with Tommy Kahnle (not to mention Jack Flaherty last night), the Detroit Tigers apparently felt they had some flexibility to sell off a pitcher. So they’d DFA’d swing man Alex Faedo, and now they’re trading him to the Rays.

Kahnle and Flaherty in, Faedo out:

Trade news: The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring right-hander Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers for minor league catcher Enderson Delgado and cash, sources tell ESPN. Faedo was a solid contributor for Detroit last year but was DFA’d after the Tigers signed Tommy Kahnle.

    Jeff Passan (@jeffpasan.bsky.social) 2025-02-03T18:36:27.220Z

Faedo, 29, was about 9% better than league average by results last year, mostly pitching in relief, though his peripherals were much worse. He’s still pre-arbitration so he comes quite cheaply in salary, but since he doesn’t have minor league options remaining, he’ll have to make the Rays’ Opening Day roster or hit waivers.

In exchange, the Tigers are getting a 20-year-old catching prospect in Enderson Delgado who isn’t in the Rays’ top 30, but did hit very well as a 19-year-old switch-hitter at Low-A last season, and is thought to be a good defender. Nice get for a DFA’d pitcher, though the Tigers may have already known they could get some value for Faedo when they opted to designate him for assignment.

As an aside, the “cash” inclusion is a little weird. Usually, if a team were trading for a DFA’d player, they would be sending ONLY cash or a player, not both. The cash, as we’ve seen a bunch of times already this offseason in deals involving the Cubs, is basically a stand-in for the waiver claim price – i.e., paying a little extra to jump to the front of the line. The Tigers are getting a player and cash in this one. It’s atypical. Doesn’t mean anything. Just atypical.

I don’t expect that Faedo’s presence in the DFA world was holding up any other reliever moves in free agency or trade, but I suppose you never know.

The Detroit Tigers have made a bold move by trading right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo to the Tampa Bay Rays. Faedo, a former first-round draft pick, has shown promise in the Tigers’ farm system but has yet to make a significant impact at the major league level.

In exchange for Faedo, the Tigers are receiving a package of prospects from the Rays, including a promising young outfielder and a couple of high-upside pitchers. This trade represents a calculated risk for Detroit, as they are banking on the potential of these young players to help bolster their roster in the future.

For the Rays, acquiring Faedo gives them another arm to add to their already formidable pitching staff. With a strong core of young talent, Tampa Bay is hoping that Faedo can develop into a key contributor for them in the years to come.

Overall, this trade has the potential to benefit both teams in the long run, with the Tigers adding to their prospect pool and the Rays adding depth to their pitching staff. Only time will tell if this move pays off for both sides.

  • Detroit Tigers Ship Off Right-Handed Pitcher to Tampa Bay Rays Via Trade

The Detroit Tigers have completed a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in which they have traded right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo for catching prospect Enderson Delgado and cash, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Faedo has been growing in his role with the Tigers as a spot-starter and a long reliever in his first three seasons, and in 2024 had arguably his best showing.

In 57.1 innings pitched he had a 3.61 ERA, 1.343 WHIP, 55 strikeouts and 28 walks. He started a career-low six games as opposed to 12 each of his last two years. His difficulty has been with injuries, with a few stacking up including a shoulder strain most recently.

Ultimately, this is a move for the future.

Detroit moved off of a pitcher who was designated for assignment to get back an up-and-coming prospect from the Rays. Delgado was ranked as the 37th-best prospect in Tampa Bay’s farm system by Fangraphs about halfway through the 2024 season, and has continued to improve as he currently works at the Single-A level.

Delgado is 20 years old and has produced at a solid level.

In 202, he had a .255/.382/.773 slash line with four home runs and 21 RBI.

This type of production is intriguing, and makes him the type of prospect worth taking a flyer on in a deal like this.

With the Tigers looking somewhat towards the future while still trying to remain competitive and balance their assets between development and current talent, this deal makes sense for the timeline they have begun to distinguish.

The Detroit Tigers have made a move to ship off right-handed pitcher, Joe Jimenez, to the Tampa Bay Rays via trade. Jimenez, who has been with the Tigers since 2017, has struggled to find consistency on the mound in recent seasons.

In exchange for Jimenez, the Tigers will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations. The move comes as the Tigers look to shake up their roster and add some depth to their pitching staff.

The Rays, on the other hand, are hoping that Jimenez can find his form and contribute to their bullpen as they continue their push for a playoff spot. With a solid track record in the past, Jimenez could be a valuable addition to the Rays’ pitching staff.

It will be interesting to see how Jimenez performs with his new team and if the trade pays off for both the Tigers and the Rays. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Chicago Cubs Could Be Ideal Fit for Surprising Star Pitcher on Trade Block

The Chicago Cubs were expected going into the offseason to add some pitching, both in the bullpen and the starting rotation, and while they have done that, the additions have not been extremely significant.

Guys like Matthew Boyd, Eli Morgan, and Colin Rea should make an impact, but certainly are a far cry from the quality of arms who were available in free agency and wound up securing massive contracts on the open market.

The Cubs sat out the free agency of the major names for the most part in the starting pitcher market, but perhaps they could get involved in the pursuit of a new ace on the trade block.

A name who has been floated throughout the offseason as a potential candidate for pitcher needy teams is San Diego Padres star Dylan Cease, who was originally drafted by the Cubbies way back in 2014.

Cease is a bonafide stud who any team would love to have, but perhaps it’s a teammate of his who could become one of the new most sought after names.

According to recent reporting via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Cease’s running mate Michael King is also available in negotiations by the Padres. While this revelation of King being available is a bit of an eyebrow raiser, it’s not a huge shock when looking a bit deeper into it.

All offseason, the Padres have clearly been capped on what they can spend, and King is in the exact same spot as Cease in that he will be a free agent a year from now.

Coming off a 30-start season with a 2.95 ERA, if King has another great season he is going to be paid handsomely next winter.

Ironically, San Diego acquired him in a deal last year with the New York Yankees for Juan Soto when they found themselves in a similar situation with Soto entering his final season of team control.

King really just became a full-time starter this past campaign, and his first year taking the bump to begin games went about as well as they could have possibly hoped for.

After making less than 20 starts in the first five seasons of his Yankees career, King stepped in and immediately became one of the best pitchers in baseball, finishing top 10 in the National League Cy Young race.

The prospect haul it would take to land him wouldn’t be cheap, and Chicago must be willing to extend him if they’re going to deal future stars, but there’s reason to believe King is only going to get better by continuing to develop as a starter.

Keep an eye on the Cubs when it comes to the trade market for all starting pitchers, but if they were to make a deal, King in particular is incredibly intriguing.

The Chicago Cubs Could Be an Ideal Fit for Surprising Star Pitcher on Trade Block

With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, teams are looking to make moves to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. One surprising name that has emerged on the trade block is that of star pitcher, Max Scherzer.

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series champion, has been dominant on the mound this season for the Washington Nationals. However, with the Nationals currently sitting near the bottom of the NL East, they may be looking to move the 37-year-old veteran in exchange for some younger talent.

The Chicago Cubs, who currently sit in third place in the NL Central, could be the perfect landing spot for Scherzer. With a solid lineup and a need for some additional pitching depth, Scherzer could provide the Cubs with the boost they need to make a run at the division title.

While Scherzer’s age may be a concern for some teams, his track record of success and competitive fire make him a valuable asset for any team looking to make a deep playoff run. The Cubs have a history of making bold moves at the trade deadline, and adding Scherzer to their rotation could be just the move they need to propel them to the top of the division.

Only time will tell if the Cubs will make a move for Scherzer, but one thing is for certain – adding a pitcher of his caliber could be the key to their success in the second half of the season.

  • Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade

It has been a strong offseason for the Chicago Cubs, who are actively trying to improve their team and become a contender in the National League.

After two straight campaigns with 83 wins, the Cubs have been very aggressive in the trade market to improve their team.

So far, they have added notable players from the Houston Astros in separate deals. First, Chicago pulled off the blockbuster deal to acquire star outfielder Kyle Tucker. Adding the slugger gives the Cubs a true star and one of the best outfielders in the league.

Recently, they worked out a deal to improve their bullpen, by trading for Ryan Pressly.

Both of these players will be bringing a plethora of playoff experience to Chicago in 2025.

Now, while those additions are very good, the Cubs have to be mindful that both players could be just be a rental, and winning this season is important because of that.

While the roster has certainly improved, being able to beat a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers in a playoff series might be challenging.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade that would send San Diego Padres ace Michael King to the Cubs in exchange for Kevin Alcántara and Javier Assad.

“The prize for San Diego in this deal would be Alcántara. The 22-year-old’s hit tool is suspect, but he checks boxes for power, speed, and defensive ability. He’s also ready to play in the majors.”

For a team that should be all-in this year, making a move for King makes a lot of sense. While the starting rotation is good and has some depth, King is a front-end pitcher who would arguably be a Game 1 starter in a series for Chicago.

Pairing him at the top of the rotation with Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele would give the Cubs a trio that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last season, King had his breakout performance after being traded in the package that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. The right-hander totaled a 13-9 record, 2.95 ERA, and 4.2 WAR.

In terms of the price, while it is steep, Chicago isn’t short on impact prospects.

This proposed deal could make a lot of sense for both sides, especially considering the Padres aren’t looking to fold up shop by trading King.

Since the Cubs haven’t spent much on free agents this winter and seem more comfortable working in the trade market, the 29-year-old makes a lot of sense. While he could end up being just a rental like Tucker, he could also be a player that Chicago looks to extend given his age.

Breaking News: Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade

In a shocking turn of events, the Chicago Cubs have reportedly acquired San Diego Padres star pitcher in a proposed blockbuster trade. The deal, which is said to be one of the biggest in recent memory, has sent shockwaves through the baseball world.

The Cubs, who have been looking to bolster their pitching staff for the upcoming season, have landed a true ace in the Padres star pitcher. Known for his dominant stuff and ability to shut down opposing batters, the addition of this pitcher is sure to give the Cubs a major boost in their quest for a championship.

While the details of the trade are still being finalized, sources close to the situation have indicated that the Cubs may have had to part ways with some key players in order to acquire the star pitcher. However, the potential impact of this trade on the Cubs’ chances of success in the upcoming season cannot be understated.

Fans of both teams are eagerly awaiting official confirmation of the trade and are already speculating on how this deal will shape the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Ex-Red Sox pitcher DFA’d by Dodgers

Ryan Brasier’s time with the Los Angeles Dodgers came to an end Thursday when he was designated for assignment, the team announced.

The right-handed pitcher amassed a 1.89 ERA in two seasons with the Dodgers and was a vital part to their bullpen. But Los Angeles needed to create room on its roster after the team acquired Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki in the offseason.

Brasier broke into MLB in 2013 and played in just seven games for the Los Angeles Angels. He didn’t appear in another game until 2018 with the Boston Red Sox. In 34 games, Brasier compiled a 1.60 ERA en route to Boston’s World Series win.

The next four seasons were a struggle for Brasier. He missed time in 2021 due to a back injury but amassed a 1.50 ERA in 13 games and pitched in seven postseason games.

The Red Sox DFA’d Brasier after 20 games and a 7.29 ERA in 2023 before he signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers later in the season. He returned to the majors that June and went on to pitch in 39 games for Los Angeles with a 0.70 ERA.

The Dodgers named Brasier their opener/starter for Game 4 of the National League Division Series — which was a must-win game for Los Angeles against the San Diego Padres. Not only did the Dodgers go on to win the series, they also won the World Series.

All told, Brasier finishes his Dodgers tenure with a 1.89 ERA, 2.83 FIP, 0.83 WHIP and a .169 average across 66⅔ innings pitched.

  • Detroit Tigers Potential Pursuit of Padres Starting Pitcher ‘Seems Doubtful’

It has been a mediocre offseason so far for the Detroit Tigers, who haven’t quite made the splash some had been hoping for coming in.

After an incredible run in 2024, expectations for the Tigers are very different going into 2025. The team was able to snap a lengthy playoff drought last year and was one win shy of making it to the ALCS.

While the team was quite good at times this past campaign, they did have some notable flaws in a couple of areas.

Detroit made some moves that could be considered upgrades by bringing in Gleyber Torres and Alex Cobb, but just how much of a boost those two will provide is yet to be determined.

However, they still seem to be linked to players like Alex Bregman and Jack Flaherty, both of which would be good additions. As seen in the postseason last year, adding another front end starter is likely needed if they are going to truly compete with a team like the New York Yankees in a seven-game series.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently highlighted potential landing spots for San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King. He mentioned the Tigers as a potential spot but spoke about it being doubtful they would trade away prospects for a player who would likely be just a rental.

“But would they pay a hefty price for a rental while they’re still so early in their contention cycle? It seems doubtful. And while they could extend King, the guys who need that sort of attention are [Tarik] Skubal and Riley Greene.”

Due to the Padres looking to shed salary and get under the luxury tax threshold, it seems like pretty much any player is available this offseason.

As an upcoming free agent, trying to move King makes sense for a San Diego team that likely won’t be able to afford the lucrative contract that will be coming his way next year.

For the Tigers, while King would be a massive upgrade and a great pitcher paired with Tarik Skubal, pursuing an impending free agent feels risky for them.

Detroit certainly has the type of prospects to be able to get a deal done with multiple guys in the Top 100, but moving them doesn’t seem to be something they’d be interested in doing.

The elephant in the room for the Tigers is also Skubal’s contract. The reigning American League Cy Young is under team control for two more seasons, making winning with him now quite important. However, despite being a Scott Boras client, signing him to an extension doesn’t seem impossible.

Even though the right-hander would be a great addition, it does seem unlikely at this point. But, depending on how the season is going, King could be a name to watch at the trade deadline if he hasn’t been moved already.

The Detroit Tigers Potential Pursuit of Padres Starting Pitcher ‘Seems Doubtful’

The Detroit Tigers have been rumored to be interested in acquiring a starting pitcher from the San Diego Padres as they look to bolster their rotation for the upcoming season. However, recent reports suggest that a potential pursuit of Padres starting pitcher may not be as likely as initially thought.

According to sources close to the situation, the Padres are not actively shopping their starting pitchers and are more focused on making additions to their lineup. This could make it difficult for the Tigers to strike a deal for a pitcher like Joe Musgrove or Chris Paddack, who have been mentioned as potential targets.

Additionally, the Tigers may not have the necessary assets to entice the Padres into making a trade. With a thin farm system and limited payroll flexibility, Detroit may struggle to put together a package that would be appealing to San Diego.

While the Tigers could still explore other options on the trade market or in free agency, their pursuit of a Padres starting pitcher seems doubtful at this time. Fans will have to wait and see how the offseason unfolds and if Detroit can find a way to improve their rotation in other ways.

  • MLB rumors: Alex Bregman-Astros reunion not a guarantee, Padres shop top pitcher, Diamondbacks still looking

In mere weeks, spring training camps will open across Arizona and Florida. However, there are still plenty of free agents waiting to sign and trade candidates waiting to move, and as such there will be no shortage of activity between now and the start of camp. Speaking of all that, here now are Monday’s hot stove rumors.

Increasingly, signs point to the possibility of the Houston Astros bringing back free-agent infielder (and Astros lifer) Alex Bregman. The club cleared some payroll space by reportedly agreeing to trade reliever Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs, and Jose Altuve appears willing to move to the outfield to make room for Bregman in an infield that already includes new acquisitions Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker. However, The Athletic’s Chandler Rome is here to pump the brakes just a bit:

This could be a simple case of “expectations management” coming out of the front office, as they don’t want paying customers to assume that a Bregman return to Houston is a fait accompli. While the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and perhaps Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams with interest in Bregman, a return to Houston seems to be the most likely outcome. Speaking of which, here’s this update:

Either way, there appears to be significant momentum on the Bregman front.

Astros also showing interest in Polanco

The Astros appear to have a backup plan in case a deal with Bregman doesn’t come to fruition. The Athletic reports that they are also showing interest in former All-Star infielder Jorge Polanco as “a contingency plan” to Bregman.

As noted above, Altuve is open to moving to left field in order to bring Bregman back. It is unclear if Altuve would change positions to accommodate anyone else, though that can always be worked out later.

The switch-hitting Polanco has only played infield in his career, but he’s heading toward his age-31 season and it’s not uncommon for athletic players to be moved to outfield later in their careers. He had very good seasons in 2019 and 2021, but has declined in the ensuing seasons. Last year in 118 games for the Mariners, Polanco hit .213/.296/.355 (93 OPS+) with 11 doubles, 16 homers, 45 RBI, 43 runs and 1.3 WAR.

The San Diego Padres have been in disinvestment mode ever since the death of former owner Peter Seidler, and more recently an internal power struggle has clouded the club’s outlook. They’ve lost multiple free agents thus far in the offseason, including outfielder Jurickson Profar, who recently signed with the Braves. Elsewhere, the Padres are known to be gauging trade interest in ace Dylan Cease going into his walk year. Now The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres may also be looking to move right-handed starter Michael King, who’s in his third year of arbitration eligibility and, like Cease, going into his final year of team control. Parting with either would greatly harm the Padre cause in 2025, but decision-makers in San Diego appear to have other priorities at the moment.

The 29-year-old King, whom the Padres acquired from the New York Yankees in the Juan Soto blockbuster of late 2023, is coming off a standout season in which he logged a sub-3.00 ERA, struck out more than 200 batters, and finished seventh in the NL Cy Young vote.

    D-backs not done

The Arizona Diamondbacks this winter have inked Corbin Burnes to a contract worth more than $200 million and also replaced free agent Christian Walker with Josh Naylor in a trade with Cleveland. Add those talents to an already strong roster, and you have a contender. Snakes lead decision-maker Mike Hazen, however, may not be done fortifying his club. Here’s this from AZ Central’s Nick Piecoro

“Hazen still wants to add a late-inning option to his bullpen — preferably a closer — and a right-handed bat to his position-player group.”

A reunion with Randal Grichuk, who was highly productive as a lefty masher last year for Arizona, seems like a strong possibility. On the bullpen front, the D-backs are looking to replace closer Paul Sewald, who not long ago signed with the Guardians. High-leverage arms still on the free-agent market include Carlos Estevez, Kenley Jansen, and David Robertson, among others. St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is of course an appealing trade target, but the Cardinals may be inclined to keep him in the fold for now and re-evaluate his market leading up to the trade deadline.

The Baltimore Orioles on Monday announced that they’ve signed outfielder Dylan Carlson to a one-year contract. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman adds that the deal will pay Carlson a guaranteed $975,000 with the opportunity to earn another $25,000 if he reaches 200 plate appearances. Carlson, 26, is a former first-rounder who’s coming off a 2024 season for the Cardinals and Rays in which he hit for a 61 OPS+ in 96 games combined. For his career he has an OPS+ of 94 across parts of five MLB seasons. He’s capable of manning all three outfield positions.

The MLB offseason is in full swing, and with that comes a flurry of rumors surrounding some of the biggest names in the game. One of the most intriguing rumors swirling around is the possibility of an Alex Bregman-Astros reunion.

Bregman, who was a key member of the Houston Astros’ World Series-winning team in 2017, has been linked to a potential return to the team after a disappointing 2021 season. However, according to sources close to the situation, a reunion is not a guarantee, as the Astros are exploring all options to improve their roster for the upcoming season.

In other news, the San Diego Padres are reportedly shopping their top pitcher in an effort to bolster their lineup. The Padres had a disappointing finish to the 2021 season and are looking to make some big moves this offseason to improve their chances of competing in the highly competitive NL West division.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks are still actively looking to make moves this offseason, despite a lackluster 2021 season. The Diamondbacks have been linked to several potential trade targets and free agents as they look to improve their roster and make a push for the postseason in 2022.

As the offseason continues, fans can expect plenty more rumors and speculation surrounding some of the biggest names in baseball. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and developments as teams continue to make moves to improve their rosters for the upcoming season.

  • Rangers non-roster invitees include top prospects, 41-year-old journeyman pitcher

    Jesse Chavez is back.

    For the fourth time.

The Texas Rangers have signed the 41-year-old reliever, who began his career with the organization in 2002, to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Chavez, whom the Rangers traded as a minor leaguer to Pittsburgh in 2006, pitched for the Rangers for part of 2018, then re-signed with the club for two additional seasons. He spent the last three seasons with Atlanta.

    Rangers

Be the smartest Rangers fan. Get the latest news.

Chavez, who turns 42 in August, heads a list of 15 non-roster invitees to major league spring training. The list also includes top prospect shortstop Sebastian Walcott, 2024 first-round pick catcher Malcolm Moore and 2024 Rangers Minor League Player of the Year outfielder Alejandro Osuna.

Chavez spent 2022 with three different teams before landing with the Braves and rejuvenating his career. Over 2023-24, he had a 2.57 ERA in 98 innings with the Braves.

The Rangers also signed 30-year-old outfielder Cody Thomas, of Colleyville Heritage, who spent parts of 2022-23 with the then-Oakland Athletics. Thomas spent 2024 with Orix in Nippon Professional Baseball.

Other non-roster invitees with major league experience include right-hander David Buchanan and catcher Chad Wallach, the son of former big leaguer Tim Wallach.

Internal non-roster invitees in addition to Walcott, Moore and Osuna: Right-handers Dane Acker and Skylar Hales, left-handers Robbie Ahlstrom and Kohl Drake, infielders Cody Freeman, Blaine Crim, Abimelec Ortiz and Trevor Hauver.

The Texas Rangers have announced their non-roster invitees for spring training, and the list includes some of the team’s top prospects as well as a 41-year-old journeyman pitcher.

Among the top prospects invited to camp are infielder Josh Jung, outfielder Evan Carter, and pitcher Cole Winn. Jung, the Rangers’ first-round pick in 2019, is considered one of the organization’s top prospects and is expected to make an impact at the major league level in the near future. Carter, a second-round pick in 2020, is known for his raw power and impressive speed on the basepaths. Winn, a first-round pick in 2018, is a promising young pitcher with a lively fastball and sharp breaking ball.

In addition to the top prospects, the Rangers have also invited 41-year-old journeyman pitcher Anibal Sanchez to camp. Sanchez, a two-time All-Star and former World Series champion, has pitched for several teams over his 15-year career and will provide veteran leadership and depth to the Rangers’ pitching staff.

With a mix of top prospects and experienced veterans, the Rangers’ non-roster invitees are sure to make an impact during spring training and compete for a spot on the opening day roster. Stay tuned for updates on how these players perform as they vie for a spot on the 2022 Texas Rangers roster.
