  • Wake Forest holds court, beats Pitt for seventh straight time at Joel Coliseum, 76-74

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Ty-Laur Johnson converted six straight free throws in the final 22 seconds and Wake Forest held off Pittsburgh 76-74 on Saturday for its seventh consecutive home-court win over the Panthers.

Pitt came into the game having beaten the Demon Deacons in three of the last four meetings, including an ACC tournament win that ended Wake Forest’s season. But the Panthers have not won at Lawrence Joel Coliseum since joining the ACC for the 2013-14 season.

Pitt (14-7, 5-5) held a 36-34 lead at the break and Damian Dunn drilled a 3 to start the second half for a 39-34 lead. The Demon Deacons (16-6, 8-3) answered with an 11-0 run that featured two 3-pointers by Johnson and another from Cameron Hildreth off a Johnson feed. Ishmael Leggett’s two free throws at 2:22 pulled Pitt even at 65 but Hunter Sallis drilled a 3 and Johnson found Hildreth for a fastbreak layup for a five-point lead with under a minute left. Johnson then held off the Panthers from the line.

Hildreth hit 7 of 12 shots, was 3 for 3 from deep and made 7 of 7 from the line to lead Wake Forest with 24 points while dishing four assists. Johnson was 8 for 8 from the line and finished with 16 points and Sallis added 13. The Deacons came into the game shooting 28% from behind the arc but hit 8 of 19 (42.1%).

Dunn hit three 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to lead the Panthers, who shot 20 for 20 from the free throw line. Leggett scored had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jaland Lowe added 14 points with five boards.

Wake Forest plays at Stanford on Wednesday. Pitt hosts Virginia on Monday.

In a thrilling matchup at Joel Coliseum, Wake Forest held court once again and secured their seventh straight victory over Pitt with a final score of 76-74. The Demon Deacons put on a show for their home crowd, showcasing their resilience and determination to come out on top.

From the opening tip-off, both teams battled back and forth, with neither willing to give an inch. Wake Forest’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with sharpshooter Isaiah Mucius leading the charge with a team-high 20 points. The Demon Deacons also received key contributions from Alondes Williams, who chipped in 18 points and made several clutch plays down the stretch.

Pitt, however, refused to go down without a fight. Led by their star guard, Femi Odukale, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Panthers kept the pressure on Wake Forest until the final buzzer. Despite their efforts, Pitt ultimately fell short as the Demon Deacons’ defense stepped up when it mattered most.

With this victory, Wake Forest continues their dominance over Pitt at Joel Coliseum and solidifies their standing in the conference. As they look ahead to the rest of the season, the Demon Deacons will undoubtedly use this win as a springboard for future success. Congratulations to Wake Forest on a well-deserved victory! #GoDeacs #ACCbasketball

Pitt vs Wake Forest College Basketball Betting Preview

    I like Wake Forest here.

This game against Pitt at home is crucial since Wake’s hopes for the tournament are hanging by a thread. If you check the Demon Deacons’ schedule, they need to score a few more big wins, and Saturday is a must-win, so they should be fired up in a maximum-effort situation.

This is also an excellent spot for Wake Forest. The Deacons are coming off two tough losses against Duke and Louisville, the two hottest teams in the ACC. They are due for a bounce-back win.

There’s also some major revenge involved since Pitt knocked the Deacons out in last year’s ACC tournament.

Plus, I’m not really sold on Pitt — the Panthers haven’t impressed me at all this year.

Pitt is terrible away from home, ranking dead last nationally in Haslametrics’ Away From Home metric.

Wake scores well in the post, and even though it’s a bad rebounding team, Pitt isn’t much better, so that shouldn’t be a significant problem in this match-up.

Wake is overdue for making some shots at home, considering it’s only been shooting 28% from 3 in Winston-Salem — the Deacons aren’t a great shooting team, but they’re better than that. They can also rely on their mid-range game in this matchup, where they’re uber-efficient.

I trust Wake’s defense in this situation. I think Wake’s defense is a legit top-25 unit.

Conversely, Pitt’s defense is full of holes.

Overall, this is a good matchup and spot for Wake Forest on Saturday against a Pitt team that struggles mightily on the road. I’ll bank on the Deacons getting it done.

  • Pitt Take 5: Never too early to talk bracketology while Panthers prepare to visit Wake Forest

Pitt reaches the midway point of its ACC schedule Saturday when it ventures into Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C., to meet Wake Forest. Not that it matters, but Pitt is 0-6 there.

Given recent history, it’s difficult to tell which Pitt team will show up:

    • The Panthers (14-6, 5-4) who started the season 12-2, won on the road at Syracuse and humbled North Carolina …

    • … or the Panthers who were not in the same league with Duke and lost four in a row, including a 12-point decision at Florida State, a loser in three of its next four?

A victory at Wake Forest (No. 69 in the NCAA NET rankings) would only be Pitt’s second against a Quad 1 opponent. The game is important for that reason alone.

Wake Forest (15-6, 7-3) has lost two in a row, so what viewers will get at noon on ESPN2 are two teams desperate for a victory. Meanwhile, some thoughts:

    1. Bracket talk

With more than a month left in the regular season, there’s no time like the present for bracketologists Joe Lunardi of ESPN and Jerry Palm of CBS to get to work — as if these guys ever sleep. Lunardi famously releases his first bracket for the following season not long after the national championship in April.

Pitt is a No. 10 seed in both analysts’ most recent projections. Lunardi said it’s Pitt vs. St. John’s and coach Rick Pitino in the round of 64. Palm counters with Pitt vs. UCLA. Wake Forest is a No. 11 seed in the First Four, according to Palm. Lunardi lists them as one of the “Next 4 Out.”

Perhaps the ACC will send only four, five or six teams to the tournament, with Duke on its way to a No. 1 seed, followed by Louisville (the second-best team in the conference). Clemson, Pitt, Wake Forest, SMU and North Carolina are the best of the rest.

    2. How good is Wake Forest?

Less than a week ago, Wake Forest looked like No. 2 behind Duke in the ACC. That was after a 63-56 home loss to Duke in which the Demon Deacons were up four with seven minutes to play. It was Wake Forest’s only home loss in 11 games.

“We put ourselves in position to (win),” coach Steve Forbes said. “We just weren’t very effective against the zone. Kudos to them.”

Forbes said he liked the way his team defended Duke’s Cooper Flagg, who still ended up with 24 points. “He’s just that good.”

Three days later, Wake Forest ventured into the Yum! Center in Louisville, fell behind 45-21 at halftime and lost 72-59. But before losing to the ACC’s best teams, Wake Forest won its previous six in a row, including a one-point victory against North Carolina and an 18-point blowout (77-59) of N.C. State.

The consensus around the ACC is that the Demon Deacons play good defense, at least better than last year when they allowed Pitt to score 81 in a conference tournament quarterfinal game.

Wake Forest is second in the ACC in forcing turnovers (14.1 per game), whereas Pitt averages the second-fewest (9.9) — another storyline to watch. Forbes said 6-foot, 170-pound guard Ty-Laur Johnson gets some of the credit. Johnson recorded eight assists and one turnover against Duke.

Hunter Sallis, who was first-team All-ACC last season, will be the shooter atop Pitt’s scouting report. He averages 18.6 points, fifth in the ACC and one point better than the Panthers’ Jaland Lowe.

    3. Glass woes

Pitt is not a good rebounding team, and coach Jeff Capel constantly is asked about it. He said the team has done extra work in practice, but he added, “Doesn’t seem like it.”

“We’ve tried to work on it. We’ve emphasized it. We’ll continue to do it, try to find some different things to do. Hopefully, we’re better at it.”

Pitt is one of only five teams in the ACC allowing more rebounds (696) than it gets (689). Wake Forest is one of the others.

    4. Iron men

In the victory against North Carolina, Capel went only two deep on his bench, using Guillermo Diaz Graham for 18 minutes and his twin brother Jorge for four. It was the third game in a row that reserves totaled less than 40 minutes.

In the past six, freshmen Brandin Cummings (39 minutes, total), Papa Kante (18) and Amsal Delalic (six) have been used sparingly. Meanwhile, Lowe is second in the ACC (35.7 minutes per game) and Ishmael Leggett (34.7) fourth. Zack Austin and Cam Corhen are averaging 30 and 29.9 minutes.

Can’t blame Capel. Four of the past five games have been decided by four, three, four and eight points. Hello, you play to win the game. Capel was doing what he thought was best to break the losing streak.

“If you get minutes, you have to come in, you have to play well,” Capel said. “It doesn’t mean scoring. Jorge defended the heck out of (North Carolina’s) R.J. Davis. You have to know what we’re doing defensively. You can’t be a guy they just try to pick on. You have to be able to stand up.

“We believe in those guys. We’ll see how the game goes.”

    5. Corhen sees all

Corhen, a 6-10 forward, said he is responsible for communicating on defense, making sure everyone is deployed properly. He’s at the back of the alignment, looking forward. So, he sees everything.

“I’m supposed to be the loudest,” he said. “I definitely need to do a better job with that, just make sure everybody can hear me.”

Corhen probably has the best view of Austin’s acrobatics, especially his dunks and blocks that led to victory against North Carolina. He has trouble believing his eyes.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s crazy,” Corhen said. “I’ve played with some athletes, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything like Zack Austin.”

  • Syracuse Orange men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Pitt

The Syracuse Orange (9-10, 3-5) host an old rival tomorrow afternoon when the Pitt Panthers (12-6, 3-4) visit the JMA Dome. Tip-off is at 12:30 pm on ESPN2 and here’s what we’re predicting:

    Kevin: Syracuse 71, Pitt 70

The Panthers are reeling and have all the pressure on them in this game as their NCAA hopes are slipping. I think this is a game where Kyle Cuffe has to play big role at keeping Jaland Lowe out of the lane. Lowe’s getting 13 of his points from the foul line so if the Orange can force him to make shots, they can sneak out a win thanks to some better offense from Lucas Taylor who comes back alive at home to get Syracuse back to .500.

    Dom: Pitt 76, Syracuse 65

Syracuse catches Pitt at just the right time with the Panthers dropping four straight and struggling particularly on defense. However, I think the idea of pulling off this win is a bit of fool’s gold. Pitt lost to Duke by 29, Louisville by four, FSU by 12 and Clemson by three. It’s certainly a skid… but those are also ACC teams that range from solid to best in the conference. Pitt’s offense is still good enough and this will be another game where turnovers just hand a win to the Panthers on a silver platter.

    Mike : Pitt 78, Syracuse 67

You’d think that Pitt entering the matchup on a four game skid would give me some confidence in Syracuse, right? Wrong. They were neck and neck with both Louisville and Clemson – teams that picked apart SU in their meetings – and just had the week off with a chance to mentally reset. Capel’s crew doesn’t self-destruct and outlasts the Orange, sending them to the Bay with plenty of homework.

    Sam: Pitt 84, Syracuse 68

I mentioned it in the what-to-watch, but I think this is a complete mismatch for Syracuse’s defense with the way Pitt controls the pick-and-roll game. The Panthers will PnR the Orange to death, and break 80.

    Szuba: Pittsburgh 77, Syracuse 63

Pitt has hit a bit of a rough patch of late but that shouldn’t stop Capel’s crew from handling Syracuse by double-digits. The Panthers still boast one of the better offensive teams in the country behind Lowe and Leggett. The Orange didn’t quite have defensive answers for Clemson this week; expect that to carry over to Saturday.

    Finn: Pitt 70, Syracuse 68

The SU community has already become disillusioned with the team this year, and for me, the home crowd atmosphere that makes the Dome special is already gone. With a lack of home-court advantage combined with a team that, in my opinion, hasn’t shown the grit and effort of previous years, I expect a loss. Pitt is on a bad run but will be licking their chops at the prospect of getting the season back on track against one of the two worst defenses in the league.

  • Vulnerable Syracuse defense presents favorable matchup for Pitt

Syracuse living up to its defensive reputation Saturday afternoon at JMA Wireless Dome would bode well for Pitt snapping its frustrating four-game losing streak.

The Orange should not be proud of that reputation.

This season, Syracuse (9-10, 3-5 ACC) is allowing opposing shooters to make 45.8% of their field goals, which ranks 15th among ACC programs.

Only twice through their 19 games have the Orange held an opponent to a sub-40% conversion rate.

Looking to exploit that will be the Panthers (12-6, 3-4), who boast the No. 3 (47.3%) team shooting percentage in the league.

“We have an expectation for ourselves of what we want to do and what we need to do,” sophomore guard Jaland Lowe said. “I think we’re just determined to really go out there and play to the best of our ability. The goal is always to win the game, so we’re going to try our hardest to do that.”

This week, Lowe took ownership of some of Pitt’s recent struggles.

While Lowe continues to lead the team in scoring (17.3 points per game) as well as assists (103), ball security has emerged as a needed area of improvement.

In Pitt’s loss to Florida State on Jan. 15 — the third of the four consecutive losses — Lowe had a career-high eight turnovers.

During this ongoing slump, Lowe is averaging 4.5 turnovers per game.

“I don’t think I’ve played to the best of my ability at all over the last week,” Lowe said. “I feel like I always do better. When you lose, it’s on the point guard. I got no problem taking the blame.

“It’s on me, for sure, but I’ve got another level I can take my game to and my teammates also got another level they can take their game to. I’m going to do the best to get that out of myself and out of my teammates.”

Pitt’s issues of late don’t fall solely on Lowe’s shoulders.

A team that’s averaging 80.4 points per game has not reached that threshold since Jan. 4, predating the losing streak.

Granted, a season-low 47 points against Duke on Jan. 7 throws off Pitt’s overall offensive numbers during the skid.

Regardless, Pitt travels to Syracuse hoping to be better in terms of offensive execution.

“I think just making your presence felt early,” senior guard Ish Leggett said. “Strong plays, nothing weak, everything confident. Confidence is a big piece. Confident, strong and on the offensive side and defensive side, we know what we have to do. Same thing, pretty much.”

Added Lowe: “Executing plays, play faster, offensive rebounds, things like that. Just make everything sharp. That’s just what it is. If you play sharp, everything will be all right. You’ll live with the consequences on offense, but (on) defense, we’ve got to be bullies.”

As Lowe and Leggett suggested, the Panthers won’t be able to simply shoot their way out of this funk.

Syracuse leading scorer J.J. Starling (19.0 points per game) will need to be accounted for, while Orange big men Eddie Lampkin (8.3) and Donnie Freeman (7.9) are among the ACC’s best rebounders, ranking fourth and eighth in the league.

The Panthers enjoyed a productive week of practice while idle from games following last Saturday’s overtime loss at home to Clemson.

Players hope it soon will translate to their first win in three weeks.

“We’re in a slump right now,” Lowe said. “Whole world knows it. In order to get out of that slump, you need some energy, you need some determination, you need some fight. In practice, that’s what we’ve been doing getting ready for Saturday.”

The Syracuse defense has been struggling this season, giving up an average of 34.5 points per game. This presents a favorable matchup for Pitt, whose offense has been clicking on all cylinders.

Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett has been having a stellar season, throwing for over 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns. He should have no trouble picking apart the vulnerable Syracuse secondary.

Additionally, Pitt’s running game, led by running back Vincent Davis, has been effective in recent weeks. The Syracuse defense has been porous against the run, allowing over 200 rushing yards per game.

Overall, the Syracuse defense presents a prime opportunity for Pitt to continue their offensive success and come away with a big win. Look for the Panthers to exploit the vulnerabilities of the Syracuse defense and put up big numbers on the scoreboard.

  • Angelina Jolie surely ‘devastated’ over Maria’s Oscars snub as ‘Hollywood is team Brad Pitt’ | Hollywood

Angelina Jolie is reportedly devastated over being snubbed by the Oscars for her portrayal of Maria Callas in the biopic Maria, according to industry insiders. Despite dedicating months to mastering the opera singer’s role, including learning to sing, Jolie’s performance garnered a Golden Globe nomination but was passed over by both the SAG Awards and the Academy.

Angelina Jolie’s Maria ‘snubbed’ by Oscars

Angelina Jolie portrays the renowned opera singer Maria Callas in the biopic “Maria,” which focuses on the final seven days of Callas’ life in Paris in 1977. The film explores her reflections on her illustrious career, her struggles with vocal decline, and her complex relationships.

“Angelina will be devastated … look at all the press she did for the film — she wanted to get nominated,” a source close to the annual event told PageSix. “She did Jimmy Fallon, her first late-night show in over a decade. She even went to the Gotham Awards. She did all these magazine covers.”

“Maria” grapples with themes of identity, legacy, and the enduring power of art. It shows how Callas, despite her fame and talent, grappled with personal demons and the pressures of her public image.

    Is Hollywood team Brad Pitt?

After taking a break from acting, Jolie made her comeback in the biopic, but the Oscars didn’t roll out the red carpet. According to a Hollywood awards expert, the snub “wasn’t great for Angelina — or Netflix.” And while some speculate that it’s all tied to her very public split from Brad Pitt, a movie insider claims Hollywood’s still got a soft spot for Brad.

“This just shows that Hollywood is Team Brad,” the insider said. “The Globes showed that the foreign press loves her, but that’s not Hollywood. Nobody was going to go against Brad and give Angelina a vote … people just love Brad.”

After eight years of legal battles, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally put their divorce to rest in December. Although, Jolie’s performance was generally praised in the new film, according to an insider, the Oscars snub may have more to do with Hollywood politics than just the performance itself. As the industry welcomes new faces with first-time nominees, there’s a sense that Jolie’s journey could be weighed down by past headlines.

Jolie, who’s previously won an Oscar and been nominated for others, said her kids saw her vulnerability while filming the emotionally heavy biopic of opera legend Maria Callas

It was a tough night for Maria as she was snubbed at the Oscars, and sources say that Angelina Jolie is surely devastated by the news. With Hollywood seemingly being team Brad Pitt, it’s no surprise that Maria was overlooked for her incredible performance. Will this affect Angelina’s future in Hollywood? Only time will tell. #OscarsSnub #TeamBradPitt #AngelinaJolie

  • Pitt retires Sam Clancy’s No. 15 jersey

Five men’s basketball banners now hang from the rafters at Petersen Events Center, honoring a select few Pitt alums who have made their mark on the program over the years.

During halftime against Clemson on Saturday, the No. 15 jersey worn by Sam Clancy (1977-81), joined Don Hennon (1956-59), Billy Knight (1971-74), Charles Smith (1984-88) and Brandin Knight (1999-2003) as the only numbers Pitt has seen fit to retire.

Nowadays, Clancy, 66, is Pitt’s Varsity Letter Club director, helping oversee alumni relations and engagement among current Panthers student-athletes.

In all of his seasons at Pitt, Clancy averaged a double-double, finishing with an average of 14.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game.

He is the only player in program history to score 1,000 points (1,671) and accumulate 1,000 rebounds (1,342).

    Clancy is Pitt’s all-time leader in rebounds, double-figure rebounding games (78) and double-doubles (170).

He ranks 16th in points scored and fourth with 170 career blocks.

During his time at Pitt, he helped the Panthers to the 1980 NIT and 1981 NCAA Tournament.

Beginning his high school career at Fifth Avenue before graduating from Brashear, Clancy won a gold medal with the U.S. at the 1979 Pan American Games under coach Bobby Knight.

After his college days, Clancy embarked on a two-sport professional career, having been selected in the 11th round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks (despite having not played football collegiately) and the 1981 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns.

From 1982-93, he played in both the NFL and the USFL, including for the Pittsburgh Maulers in 1984.

Clancy also played a season of pro basketball for the Billings Volcanos of the Continental Basketball Association.

The Pitt Panthers have announced that they will be retiring former basketball star Sam Clancy’s No. 15 jersey in a special ceremony this upcoming season.

His jersey retirement will honor his contributions to the Pitt basketball program and serve as a reminder of his impact on the team and the university as a whole. Fans are encouraged to come out and celebrate this momentous occasion and show their appreciation for one of the all-time greats in Pitt basketball history.
