Pitt first announced that it would retire Clancy’s number at a Pitt football game this past season.
Clancy grew up in the Hill District in Pittsburgh and starred at Fifth Avenue High School in the area, leading the team to a state championship in 1976. When Fifth Avenue closed that year, Clancy played for the newly opened Brashear High School as a senior and joined their first ever graduating class.
He would then go on to play for Pitt from 1977-81. Clancy starred at the collegiate level, averaging 14.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, an impressive double-double. He is still the only Pitt player to score more than 1,000 points (1,671) and grab more than 1,000 rebounds in a career and his 66 career double-doubles are also the most in Pitt history. Clancy leads the program all-time with 1,362 rebounds and his 170 blocks are fourth most in Pitt history.
Clancy earned three-time All-Eastern 8 selections and also played for the U.S. team in the 1979 Pan American Games, winning a gold medal.
The Panthers succeeded as a team during Clancy’s time with the program. This includes four winning seasons, the 1981 Eastern 8 Tournament Championship and appearances in the 1980 NIT Tournament as a junior and the 1981 NCAA Tournament as a senior.
Clancy then saw himself earn two draft selections from two different sport leagues. The Phoenix Suns of the NBA drafted him in with the 16th pick in the Third Round of the 1981 Draft and Seattle Seahawks of the NFL drafted him No. 284 overall in the 11th round of the 1982 Draft, despite him never playing collegiate football.
He played one season for the Billings Volcanos in the Continental Basketball Association, where he averaged 11.5 points and 8.3 rebounds before choosing football for the rest of his career.
Clancy started on defensive end for the Seahawks from 1982-83, before joining the Pittsburgh Maulers in the new USFL in 1984. He then played one season for the Memphis Showboats before returning to the NFL with the Cleveland Browns from 1985-88 and the Indianapolis Colts from 1989-93.
Clancy finished his time in the NFL with 227 tackles, 30 sacks and seven fumble recoveries. He would serve as defensive line coach for the Barcelona Dragons in NFL Europe, winning the 1997 World Bowl. He also coached defense in different capacities for the Oakland Raiders and the New Orleans Saints.
He returned back to Pitt in 2005 and earned a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. Clancy worked as a football strength and conditioning assistant for three seasons before he chose to transition to the administrative side at the university. He is in his 15th year as Director of the Varsity Letter Club, where he works with alumni and connecting them with current student-athletes at Pitt.
The University of Pittsburgh announced today that they will be retiring former basketball star Sam Clancy’s number 15 jersey. Clancy, who played for the Panthers from 1979 to 1982, was a dominant force on the court and is considered one of the greatest players in Pitt history.During his time at Pitt, Clancy was a two-time All-American and led the team to multiple NCAA tournament appearances. He still holds the record for most rebounds in a single game with an impressive 27.
Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke stated, “Sam Clancy’s impact on our program and the university as a whole is undeniable. He was a true leader both on and off the court, and we are honored to retire his number 15 jersey as a tribute to his incredible legacy.”
The retirement ceremony will take place during halftime of an upcoming Pitt basketball game, where Clancy will be honored in front of fans, alumni, and former teammates. This is a well-deserved recognition for a player who gave his all for the Panthers and left a lasting impact on the program. Congratulations, Sam Clancy!

Sam Clancy’s impact on Pitt basketball
PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Surprised during the Pitt-Cal football game as Pitt head coach Jeff Capel announced the program would retire his number, Sam Clancy said he’s been riding that wave. Now Saturday as the Panthers host Clemson at noon, Clancy’s number 15 will be part of a distinct group that made a profound impact on the university.
“It’s been amazing,” Clancy said during the Jeff Capel Show. “I’m so grateful and humble to what the university has done for me and what I have tried to accomplish for the university. I tried to be the best person I could be.”
“I owe the university everything. It’s who I am. I feel fortunate because I’m from Pittsburgh.”
The numbers are amazing 1,671 points, 1,342 rebounds (program leader), 186 assists, 170 blocks, 161 steals. But it’s more than just the numbers with Clancy.
“The year before Sam got there, I think their record is 6-21,” said Sporting News writer and Pittsburgh native Mike DeCourcy on Capel’s show. “Sam got there and they didn’t lose. It’s not that they didn’t lose games, but they never had a losing season with Sam and continued to ascend. I think that really sets Pitt forward in the 80s.”
“If Sam goes somewhere else, I don’t know if Pitt has the success they had in the 80s. A lot of things that happened great for Pitt basketball in the 70s and 80s were the direct result of Sam Clancy.”
He made that impact as a Pittsburgh kid, growing up winning a state championship at Fifth Avenue High School and then graduated from Brashear HS after Fifth Avenue closed. That Fifth Avenue team was ranked second-best in the nation. He also led the Pennsylvania Team in the Roundball Classic that beat a team of United States all-stars.

Clancy then had a decision to make. He was recruited heavily by NC State and Ohio State, saying Buckeyes football coach Woody Hayes wanted him to play both, which ironically ruled them out because he wasn’t ready for what would end up being his professional career.
Football did play a part in his decision, as the 6’7” power forward was weighing a basketball career with the Wolfpack or Pitt, he went to a game at Pitt Stadium. He said he couldn’t remember if it was against Penn State or West Virginia, but it was Hopewell High School graduate, All-American Tony Dorsett that sealed him becoming a Panther.
“Right on the sideline he came over and said ‘Sam, I’m telling you, you got to stay home for the City of Pittsburgh,” Clancy recalled. “They will love you forever and they will never, ever forget you. Do it for your parents.”
That stuck with him as he said he knew his mom and dad wouldn’t be able to travel to see him play. And his mom was his biggest fan, and if you went to games, you likely heard her. She also was one to keep him in line. Clancy told Capel if he has a regret Saturday afternoon, it’s that his parents aren’t there to see it.
How proud they must be that their son’s legacy will be on display for every home basketball game. He’s only the fifth player to be so honored-Don Hennon and Billy Knight will be at the game. Charles Smith and Brandin Knight are unable, but called to congratulate Clancy.
“For somebody local to stay home and make that kind of impact, not only on the program, but college basketball on the local scene,” Voice of the Panthers Bill Hillgrove said on the Jeff Capel Show. “It was quite delicious.”
“You were a delight to watch and to cover. That smile it’s indelible. You put Pitt basketball on the map.”
“Very, very special, for a special guy,” Capel said. “We are just really excited to honor Sam and what he means to this university, to the city, to our program and to the University of Pittsburgh.”
But there is one other question, number 15 is being retired, but currently guard Jaland Lowe wears 15.
“Jaland and I were together one day and I said ‘hey, man, what are you going to do with that 15 now?’,” Clancy said as that smile came across his face. Clancy is no stranger to the team, Capel welcomes him being around the program and Clancy loves that the players call him ‘OG’, slang for an original, someone that is highly respected. It goes both ways.
“He represents what Pitt is about,” Clancy said about Lowe, who will continue to wear 15 for the rest of his career with Sam’s blessing. “He represents what winning is about. He represents what being a young man and being a leader is about.”
“I’m thrilled that 15 will be represented the way it should be. The way I tried to play is the way he’s playing-tried to work hard, play defense, be a leader.”
“I’m so honored that Jaland would be the last guy to wear that number.”
Sam Clancy’s impact on Pitt basketballSam Clancy is a name that is synonymous with Pitt basketball. The former standout player had a tremendous impact on the program during his time on the court, leaving a lasting legacy that is still felt to this day.
Clancy, a Pittsburgh native, played for the Panthers from 1979 to 1982 and was known for his dominant presence in the paint. Standing at 6’7″ and weighing 230 pounds, he was a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the court. Clancy was a prolific scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker, earning the nickname “Sam the Man” for his impressive performances.
During his time at Pitt, Clancy led the team to several successful seasons, including an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1981. He was a two-time All-Big East selection and was named an honorable mention All-American in 1982. Clancy’s impact on the program was undeniable, as he helped elevate Pitt to national prominence and set a high standard for future players to follow.
Off the court, Clancy was also known for his leadership and work ethic. He was a mentor to younger players and a role model for his teammates, displaying a level of professionalism and dedication that inspired those around him.
Overall, Sam Clancy’s impact on Pitt basketball cannot be overstated. His contributions to the program both on and off the court helped shape the team’s identity and set the stage for future success. Clancy will always be remembered as one of the all-time greats in Pitt basketball history.

Pitt Take 5: Panthers aim to end current 3-game skid as well as 12-game streak vs. Clemson
Pitt’s current three-game slump could be seen as a harbinger of a season on the verge of running off the rails, with margin for error having decreased significantly.
After all, the Panthers have not lost this many ACC games in a row since 2021-22, en route to an 11-21 overall finish in coach Jeff Capel’s fourth year at the helm.
There are 14 conference games remaining for the Panthers (12-5, 3-3).
Further putting Pitt’s skid into perspective is a 9-5 finish to league play would have the Panthers at 21-10 (12-8) heading into the ACC Tournament.
Last season, Pitt was excluded from the NCAA Tournament despite going 22-11, with its fate being partly determined by a league tournament semifinals loss to North Carolina that neutralized a potential late-season push into the March Madness field.
Needing to get back in the win column, Pitt returns home to Petersen Events Center on Saturday for a showdown with Clemson (14-4, 6-1), third in the conference.
Here are five storylines ahead of that matchup:
1. Solving the Tigers
If historical precedent counts for anything, Clemson is among the worst opponents Pitt could have drawn for an important midseason game.
Heading into tipoff at noon Saturday, the Panthers ride a 12-game losing streak against the Tigers that dates to January 2015.
Not since March 8, 2014, has Pitt beaten Clemson.
Granted, since 2022-23, when Capel turned around the Panthers program and led it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016, Pitt has played Clemson more competitively.
But the overall effort hasn’t been sufficient to end a losing streak that long predates Capel’s arrival in Oakland.
2. Beware of the 3
If Saturday’s game comes down to one battle, it may be Pitt’s perimeter defense vs. Clemson’s 3-point shooters.
The Tigers feature the best 3-point-shooting offense in the ACC, with a 38.1% conversion rate.
In terms of neutralizing opponents from beyond the arc, Pitt ranks seventh leaguewide with a 32.0% team defense.
Sixth-year senior guard Chase Hunter leads Clemson with 17.4 points per game.
His 3-point percentage of 44.6% (107 of 216) also paces the Tigers and ranks first in the ACC.
Part of limiting Clemson’s 3-point attack will come down low in preventing second-chance opportunities.
In that department, Pitt could use a reset, as the Panthers are two games removed from allowing a season-high 17 offensive boards to Louisville on Jan 11.
Eager to snag missed shots off the glass will be Clemson’s Ian Schieffelin; the 6-foot-8 senior forward ranks second in the ACC with 10.0 boards per game.
3. Success at the line
Pitt leads the ACC in free-throw percentage at 79.0%.
Clemson is second at 78.4%.
Hunter has been the Tigers’ sharpest shooter at the charity stripe, as he’s hitting 90.2% (55 of 61) of his tries.
The Panthers’ Jaland Lowe (86 of 95) has made 90.5% of his free throws, and big man Zack Austin is at 89.5% (34 of 38).
While it wasn’t enough to lift them to wins over Florida State and Louisville recently, the Panthers posted identical 90.9% make rates (20 of 22) from the free-throw line in their last two contests.
4. Limiting turnovers
So far, Lowe has enjoyed a solid sophomore campaign, stepping into the starting point guard’s shoes and shouldering a large load.
No Pitt player averages more minutes (35.1), and Lowe also leads the team in points (17.5).
Against Florida State, Lowe shot 50% from the floor and scored 22 points. But he also committed a career-high eight turnovers.
Lowe’s ball-security woes were emblematic of the team’s, evidenced by a season-high 17 turnovers against the Seminoles.
Pitt is averaging 10.6 turnovers on the season.
5. Eyes on the NET
Clemson arrives in Oakland in a slightly inferior position to Pitt looking at the NET rankings.
The Tigers are ranked 36th, with Pitt coming in 31st.
Thus, for Clemson, Saturday represents a chance at a Quad 1 victory. If Pitt manages to snap its 12-game, decade-long losing streak vs. the Tigers, a Quad 2 win would be part of the reward.
Heading into this weekend, Pitt’s NET ranking is third among all ACC programs, behind only Duke (No. 2) and Louisville (No. 28).

The Pitt Panthers are gearing up to face off against the Clemson Tigers in a crucial ACC showdown. As the Panthers look to put an end to their current three-game losing streak, they also have their sights set on snapping a 12-game losing streak against Clemson.Pitt has had a tough stretch of games recently, but they are determined to turn things around and get back in the win column. With a strong team and a resilient mindset, the Panthers are ready to take on the challenge of facing off against Clemson.
The Tigers, on the other hand, are coming off a big win and will be looking to continue their dominance over Pitt. However, the Panthers are not backing down and are prepared to give it their all in order to secure a much-needed victory.
Fans can expect an intense and competitive game as Pitt looks to break their losing streak and finally come out on top against Clemson. Stay tuned as the Panthers take the court and aim to make a statement in this highly anticipated matchup. #H2P #PantherPride #BeatClemson

A spokesperson for Brad Pitt has addressed the viral story about a French woman who believed she was in a long-term relationship with the actor and was scammed out of €830,000 ($855,000, £700,000) by someone posing as him.
“It’s awful that scammers take advantage of the strong bond between fans and celebrities,” the spokesperson said in a statement obtained by E! News. “But this is an important reminder not to respond to unsolicited online outreach, especially from actors who have no social media presence.”
The story first emerged on Sunday on the French news program Seven to Eight on the TF1 channel.
The woman, a 53-year-old interior designer who identified herself as Anne, appeared on the show, and shared that she had believed that she was in an online relationship with Pitt for more than a year, and even expressed that she thought they were in love.
The relationship reportedly began in February 2023 when Anne, who was married to a wealthy entrepreneur, received a message from someone posing as Pitt’s mother, which later led to another account contacting Anne, this time claiming to be the actor himself.
They communicated for over a year and a half, Anne said.
The impersonator used fake social media profiles and WhatsApp accounts, and used AI-generated images to produce pictures that looked like selfies of Pitt and even an apparent copy of Pitt’s passport.
At one point, Anne said the person told her that he needed financial assistance for cancer treatment because his accounts had been frozen due to his divorce proceedings with Angelina Jolie.
She said she received AI-generated pictures of the actor appearing in a hospital.
Anne transferred hundreds of thousands of euros to the person for medical expenses, only to realize she was scammed when she saw a photograph this summer of Pitt with his partner, Inés de Ramón.
The program said that Anne filed a police complaint over the scam.
After the show aired over the weekend, it quickly went viral online, sparking a wave of online jokes about gullibility.
As a result, on Tuesday, the channel decided to remove the episode from its replay services on its websites.
At the time of the broadcast, TF1 reported that Anne had been experiencing mental health issues, including severe depression, and had been hospitalized for treatment.
Brad Pitt Reacts to ‘Awful’ Scammers Who Fooled French Woman Using His PicturesIn a recent incident, scammers used Brad Pitt’s pictures to deceive a French woman, leading her to believe she was in a romantic relationship with the Hollywood actor. Upon discovering the deception, Brad Pitt expressed his dismay and disappointment at the situation.
“It’s truly awful that these scammers would take advantage of someone in this way,” Pitt said in a statement. “I feel for the woman who was misled and manipulated by their deceitful actions. It’s important for people to be vigilant and cautious when interacting with strangers online.”
Pitt also urged his fans to be wary of fraudulent schemes and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities. “I want to remind everyone to be cautious and to protect themselves from these kinds of scams,” he added.
The actor’s response highlights the prevalence of online scams and the need for greater awareness and vigilance in the digital age. It serves as a reminder that not everything online is as it seems, and that individuals should exercise caution when engaging with unknown individuals on the internet.

Brad Pitt Reacts After Woman Is Conned Out of $850K by Alleged Catfish
Pitt’s the one who lost his head for Paltrow on the set of 1995’s Se7en. They were the mid-90s couple, from the top of her slip dress to the ends of his frosted tips. Accepting the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for 12 Monkeys in 1996, Brad thanked Gwyneth, his “angel, the love of my life,” and he proposed that December. They even had matching haircuts at one point.
“I take the institution extremely seriously. There are no divorces in my family either—and in his either, so this is not something—we’ve been together for quite some time, so this is not a rash decision,” Gwyneth convincingly told Entertainment Tonight about their engagement. But in June 1997, they broke up.
“When two people aren’t supposed to be together, they’re not supposed to be together,” a defiant Paltrow said in 1998. Fast-forward to 2015, when she told Howard Stern, “I was such a kid, I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old… I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.”
Moreover, her dad, Bruce Paltrow, was “devastated” when they broke up. “My father loved him like a son.” Ultimately, Paltrow said, “I definitely fell in love with him. He was so gorgeous and sweet. I mean, he was Brad Pitt!”
In a recent shocking turn of events, a woman was conned out of a staggering $850,000 by an alleged catfish. The victim, who remains unidentified, fell victim to a sophisticated online scam that left her financially devastated. As news of the scam spread, many have been left wondering how such a large sum of money could be taken from someone without their knowledge. The alleged catfish reportedly gained the woman’s trust over time, leading her to believe that they were in a romantic relationship. However, it was later revealed that the person behind the facade was not who they claimed to be.
Upon hearing about the devastating ordeal, Hollywood actor Brad Pitt was reportedly shocked and saddened by the news. Pitt, known for his philanthropic efforts and advocacy for justice, expressed his sympathy for the victim and denounced the actions of the alleged catfish.
In a statement released by Pitt’s representatives, the actor condemned the deceptive tactics used by the catfish and urged others to remain vigilant when forming relationships online. He also expressed hope that the victim would be able to recover from this traumatic experience and receive the support she needs.
As the investigation into the scam continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online relationships and the importance of staying cautious when interacting with strangers on the internet. Let this be a cautionary tale to all, and may justice be served for the victim who was cruelly taken advantage of.

#Brad #Pitt #Reacts #Woman #Conned #850K #Alleged #CatfishPitt Take 5: Pitt plays host to Stanford, seeking 1st 12-2 start in 9 years
When Pitt plays Stanford on Saturday at Petersen Events Center, the Panthers (11-2, 2-0 ACC) have a chance for the program’s best start after 14 games since 2015-2016, when the Panthers opened 14-1 in Jamie Dixon’s last season as coach.
The formula for success includes Pitt’s ability to score (84.2 points per game, third in the conference) with a four-pack of guards good enough to create hyperbole trying to describe them.
For now, let’s stick to the facts:
Ishmael Leggett is averaging 17.50 points, a hair ahead of his running mate, Jaland Lowe (17.46). Damian Dunn was at 11.1 after seven games before his hand injury, and freshman Brandin Cummings sits at 8.2 for the season, 13.8 in the past five games.
Leggett missed the California game Wednesday with a foot injury that is not considered serious. Coach Jeff Capel was noncommital when asked about Leggett’s availability Saturday.
Dunn’s return has been anticipated for early- to mid-January, which is about now. So, it could be Saturday, Tuesday at Duke or Jan. 11 at home against Louisville.
Capel revealed Thursday on his radio show on 93.7 FM that Lowe played the first 12 games with a minor injury after dislocating the ring finger on his shooting hand in a preseason scrimmage against Cincinnati. Lowe’s fingers had been wrapped, but the wrap came off before the Cal game and he responded with 27 points.
There is a feeling among the team that with the wrap off, Lowe’s shooting percentages (38.7 overall, 27.1 from 3-point range) will improve.
Meanwhile, here are five thoughts after the first few ACC games:
1. One after another
The rapid-fire nature of the games to start the month — only two days between tipoffs — means there’s no rest for Capel and his staff after games. He said Wednesday that he planned to spend that evening studying Stanford video.
The Cardinal (9-4, 1-1) look like a better team than Cal, having defeated the Golden Bears, 89-81, on the road. Stanford is in the midst of a two-game East Coast swing after losing at Clemson on Wednesday, 85-71.
“I know a little bit (about Stanford) because I watched them play Cal,” Capel said before he immersed himself in serious video study. “That big kid (7-foot-1, 245-pound Parisian Maxime Raynaud) is really, really freaking good. I was really impressed with him in that Cal game. I heard a lot about him, but that was my first time seeing him play. He’s as good a player as I’ve seen this year.”
Raynaud leads the ACC and is 10th in the nation in scoring (20.8 points per game). He also tops the conference with 11.9 rebounds and is shooting 50% from the field and has made 21 3-pointers. With his scoring and rebounding skills, it’s no surprise he is No. 1 in the nation with 11 double-doubles.
He is supported by Duke transfer Jaylen Blakes (15.2 points) and USC transfer Oziyah Sellers (14.2).
2. The confusing NET
If the Panthers defeat Stanford, they should be ranked in the Associated Press poll before they visit No. 4 Duke on Tuesday. But after Pitt’s rousing comeback from a 16-point deficit against California, the Panthers dropped from No. 10 to No. 13 in the NCAA NET rankings.
Explanation: Defeating Cal at the Pete is only a Quad 3 victory because the Golden Bears are ranked 122nd. Stanford is 85th, another Quad 3 opponent.
Duke (No. 3 in the NET), Louisville (No. 50) and Clemson (No. 32) in the next two weeks will provide stiffer tests and a more accurate gauge. The football team’s journey from 7-0 to 7-6 should have taught everyone to wait before making any definitive statements.
3. Next men up
Pitt dominated Cal so thoroughly in the second half Wednesday that it was difficult to believe they trailed by 11 in the final 100 seconds before halftime. Yet the Panthers went into the locker room at the break down only four.
Big props to backups Papa Kante and Amsel Delalic, who were on the floor at that time.
Kante registered a block, rebound and assist on Zack Austin’s 3-pointer. Delalic snatched two key rebounds and assisted on Guillermo Diaz Graham’s breakaway dunk.
Pitt’s bench may be stronger than expected, and Capel will need it with the ACC grind just beginning.
4. See the USA
Some may consider coast-to-coast travel for regular-season games strange, but nothing is out of bounds anymore in college athletics.
Pitt is in the midst of its initial connection with the ACC’s California teams after Cal and Stanford joined the league last year.
From Pitt’s point of view, there is little history with those schools. The Panthers’ 86-74 victory against Cal was the teams’ fourth all-time meeting and only the second since 1950. The series stands 2-2, with Pitt defeating the Golden Bears in the 2002 NCAA Tournament at the Civic Arena, 63-50.
The first scheduled game was canceled Dec. 28, 1932, because of a snowstorm. And there is a bit of a story that goes with it.
Pitt had lost at Northwestern, 31-22, on Dec. 18, and doubled back to Butler in Indianapolis — the next day — to win, 38-30. Then, the team got back on the train for an intended trip to the West Coast but traveled only as far as Colorado before weather conditions intervened and the train turned back to Pittsburgh.
Those types of excursions were not unusual for the Panthers of Dr. H.C. “Doc” Carlson, the most successful Pitt coach of all-time (367 victories and two national championships from 1922-1953).
“Doc Carlson wanted the team to see the country,” Pitt historian and author Sam Sciullo Jr. said, “let them be exposed to different cultures and places.”
Sciullo said Carlson used to walk up and down the train’s aisle, and if any player was asleep, resting his head on a window, he woke him and demanded he use that window to see the countryside.
5. Stanford/Pitt history
The game with Stanford likewise will only be the fourth in the teams’ series.
Carlson dragged his team to the West Coast in 1931 (a 22-11 victory) and 1949 (a 55-37 loss in San Francisco). Dixon’s Panthers defeated Stanford, 88-67, on a neutral court in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2013.
Sidebar: Dixon coached Pitt for 13 seasons and is the second-winningest coach in the school’s hoops history (328 victories), but he would have needed to stick around at least another two years beyond 2016 to catch Carlson.
Jerry DiPaola is a TribLive reporter covering Pitt athletics since 2011. A Pittsburgh native, he joined the Trib in 1993, first as a copy editor and page designer in the sports department and later as the Pittsburgh Steelers reporter from 1994-2004. He can be reached at jdipaola@triblive.com.
The University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team is set to take on Stanford at the Petersen Events Center in a highly anticipated matchup. The Panthers are looking to secure their first 12-2 start to a season in nine years, a feat that would solidify their status as a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball world.Led by head coach Jeff Capel, Pitt has been on a hot streak this season, with impressive wins against top-ranked teams and a strong showing in conference play. The team’s chemistry and talent have been on full display, and fans are eager to see if they can keep up their winning ways against Stanford.
The game promises to be a thrilling showdown between two powerhouse programs, with both teams hungry for a victory. Pitt will need to bring their A-game and continue to execute on both ends of the court to come out on top and make history with a 12-2 start.
Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting and intense matchup as the Panthers look to make a statement and continue their journey towards a successful season. Let’s go Pitt! #H2P

Jets Interview Former Pitt Panthers Player for GM Job
PITTSBURGH — The New York Jets are looking for a new general manager and they have looked at a former Pitt Panthers player as one of their candidates.
The Jets announced that they interviewed former Pitt safety Louis Riddick for their vacant general manager position.
We have completed an interview with Louis Riddick for our General Manager vacancy.

The New York Jets fired general manager Joe Douglas on Nov. 19 after a 3-8 start to the season and not playoff appearances under his reign, which started in 2019.
Along with Riddick, they have also interviewed former Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson and former Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff for the position.
Jets chairman Woody Johnson is currently leading the search for the new general manager and for their new head coach, as they fired Robert Saleh on Oct. 8, after a 2-3 start to 2024 and 20-36 in his four seasons with the franchise.
The Jets currently have Phil Savage as their interim general manager and Jeff Ulbrich as their interim head coach.
This is the fourth general manager position that Riddick has interviewed for, along with the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans in 2020 and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022.
Riddick came out of Perkasie Pennridge in Perkasie, Pa. in the eastern part of the state. He joined Pitt in the Class of 1987.
He played as a running back as a freshman, with 37 carries for 174 yards, 4.7 yards per carry, and nine receptions for 35 yards.
Riddick then transitioned to safety and played there for 31 games his junior and senior seasons in 1989 and 1990, respectively. He made four interceptions during that time.
He would enter the 1991 NFL Draft and the San Francisco 49ers selected him with No. 248 overall pick in the ninth round.
Riddick spent the next 10 years playing professional football with NFL stops with the Atlanta Falcons in 1992 and 1996, Cleveland Browns from 1993-95, Oakland Raiders in 1998 and Seattle Seahawks in 1999.
He then transitioned to working in NFL front offices, starting out as a pro scout for the Washington Redskins for four years, 2001-04. He then earned a promotion to Director of Pro Personnel for three seasons from 2005-07 with the franchise.
Riddick then joined the Philadelphia Eagles front office, working as a pro scout in 2008, Assistant Director of Pro Personnel in 2009 and then Director of Pro Personnel from 2010-13.
He would eventually join ESPN as an NFL Front Office Insider in 2013, but would eventually work more on Monday Night Football starting in 2019. He also helps with ESPN’s coverage of the NFL Draft and college football too.
Riddick returns to Pitt quite often, speaking on their NIL situation, unveiling a new Pitt clothing line and also promoting that clothing line on ESPN.

The New York Jets are looking to shake things up and have reportedly interviewed former Pitt Panthers player, Larry Fitzgerald, for their general manager position. Fitzgerald, who had a successful NFL career as a wide receiver, has expressed interest in transitioning into a front office role. The Jets are in need of a strong leader to help turn the franchise around after a disappointing season. Fitzgerald’s experience as a player and his knowledge of the game could make him a valuable asset in making crucial decisions for the team.
It will be interesting to see if Fitzgerald lands the GM job with the Jets and how his leadership and football acumen could potentially impact the team’s future. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Pitt Panthers G Out With Injury vs. Cal
PITTSBURGH — The Pitt Panthers will not have one of their top players, as they start 2025 and the rest of their ACC schedule against Cal on New Year’s Day at the Petersen Events Center.
The Panthers announced that senior guard Ishmael Leggett is out with injury vs. the Golden Bears with a lower body injury.
Senior guard Ishmael Leggett will miss today’s ACC home opener vs. Cal due to a lower body injury.
Leggett is one of four players in the NCAA averaging at least 17 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.5 apg, & 1.5 spg this season. pic.twitter.com/sb2Js9rtn9

Leggett played his first three seasons of college basketball with Rhode Island, with 71 starts in 88 contests. He averaged 27.3 minutes, 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game, while also shooting 39.3% from the field, 33.2% from 3-point range and 78.1% from the foul line.
His best season with the Rams came in 2021-22, when he averaged 34.6 minutes, 16.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.3 assists per game. He also shot 38.7% from the field, 31.8% from behind the arc and 84.2% from the free throw line.
Leggett had a fantastic junior year with the Panthers, winning the 2023-24 ACC Sixth Man of the Year Award. He played in all 32 games, but started just 14, coming off the bench for the final two months of the season, allowing him to earn that honor.
He averaged 12.3 points and 1.9 assists per game led the Panthers with 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, while also shooting 42.7% from the field, 34.9% from 3-point range and 85.9% from the foul line last season.
Leggett earned preseason All-ACC Second Team honors heading into this season and has had another great campaign for the program.
He leads the team with 17.5 points per game and ranks second with 33.5 minutes played, 6.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He is also shooting 51.3% from the field, 32.7% from 3-point range and 74.5% from the foul line.
This will serve as the first game that Leggett has missed this season and just the second he’s missed the Panthers in his two seasons with the program.
Pitt will now have two of their guards out vs. Cal, as graduate student guard Damian Dunn has missed the last five games after undergoing surgery on his right thumb, after injuring it against Wisconsin in the Greenbrier Tip-Off back on Nov. 24.
Both Dunn and Leggett were on the bench dressed in street clothes during warm-ups ahead of the Cal matchup.

#Pitt #Panthers #Injury #CalPitt guard Ishmael Leggett out with lower body injury for game against California
Pitt’s depth at guard will get another serious test Wednesday after coach Jeff Capel ruled senior guard Ishmael Leggett unavailable with a lower body injury for the game against California.
Senior guard Ishmael Leggett will miss today’s ACC home opener vs. Cal due to a lower body injury.
Leggett is one of four players in the NCAA averaging at least 17 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.5 apg, & 1.5 spg this season. pic.twitter.com/sb2Js9rtn9

Leggett will join Damian Dunn (hand injury) on the sideline for Pitt’s second ACC game of the season. The loss is significant for the short term — it is not considered serious — but the Panthers (10-2, 1-0) must look elsewhere for Leggett’s scoring punch and overall solid floor play. He is one of four players in the nation averaging at least 17 points (17.5), six rebounds (6.1), 2.5 assists (2.7) and 1.5 steals (1.7) per game.
Capel will turn to freshmen Brandin Cummings and Amsal Delalic against the Golden Bears (7-5, 0-1) to compensate for the loss of one his best players in Pitt’s first ACC game at Petersen Events Center.
Cummings (Lincoln Park) is averaging 7.7 points and 16.3 minutes per game after scoring 30 points against Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 11. He has scored at least 10 points in four games while shooting 41.7% (15 of 36) from beyond the 3-point arc.
Delalic is averaging 4.2 and 16.2, with an overall 53.6 percentage (15 of 28) beyond the arc.

The University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team will be missing key guard Ishmael Leggett for their upcoming game against California due to a lower body injury. Leggett, a sophomore guard, has been a key player for the Panthers this season, averaging 10.5 points per game and providing strong defense on the perimeter. His absence will be a big blow for Pitt, as they look to bounce back from a tough loss in their last game. The team will need to rally together and find a way to compensate for Leggett’s production on both ends of the court.
We wish Ishmael a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Panthers will need to step up and fill the void left by his absence in order to secure a much-needed victory against California.
